eye When we were making this ‘Distance’ issue of Bed Sheets, we didn’t realise how far we had travelled until we put all the features together. We spoke to our cover star Boy George in London about his upcoming Bed Supperclub appearance, hooked up with a young krew in L.A that are leading the new ‘jerkin’ dance trend, got the word from the street in South Africa courtesy of the zef rap-rave crew from Cape Town, Die Antwoord, then it was back to the UK to hook up with the Child Of The Jago people who are making a big noise in fashion and Tingle in the Netherlands who are making cutting edge electro in Manchester. We even sent our roving reporter Sabina to break the waves in the Maldives for our ‘bed hopping’ feature.

A CHILD OF THE JAGO by Miss Rose
'A Child Of The Jago is a child of the street. The destitute and illegitimate progeny of a hopelessly rundown environment.' A Child Of The Jago was the talk of last year’s London Fashion Week. The menswear clothing company is the creation of brilliantly brash designer Barnzley and Agent Provocateur co-founder Joe Corre (son of the Sex Pistols' manager the late Malcolm McLaren and designer Vivienne Westwood).
Barnzley first turned heads then sent them spinning during London’s late 80s acid-house boom. He was the first to print smiley faces on a range of T-shirts, he also co-created the club-wear brand Acupuncture (famous for its platform trainers) and later the agitprop street-wear label "new" Zoltar the Magnificent. 10

Tell us about your Brand A Child Of The Jago. Well, both Joe and I were fed up with boring mass-produced clothes that fall to bits, so we decided to do something about it. How can we quality control our clothes if we get things made on the other side of the world? All the fabric we use is either end-of-line left over fabric or small runs of custom-made fabric produced as locally as possible. We currently have our own shop in Great Eastern Street in London’s East End. We have a corner in Selfridges on Oxford Street and a corner of Hervia Bazaar in Manchester. We are also available in Beams, Tokyo and Any Old Iron in New York. You seem to be sticking the scissors in the corporate clothing mass production process and taking tailoring back to the ateliers. How have people in the fashion world reacted to that? I’m a big music fan so that’s where I mostly get my inspiration from. I could say the same for Joe too. I’m sure that the ‘Top Man’ crowd will see how crap their clothes are soon and copy what we are doing but they can eat my dust!
Who would you most like to see wearing Child Of The Jago? Well I guess Little Richard, Geronimo the Apache , the caveman who first invented the wheel… I’m not sure of his name, maybe it's Ugghaggah Ugooogouu or something, Micheal Jackson, Link Wray, and maybe Paul, your editor ! When & how did you meet Joe your business partner? Well, when I first arrived in London in the early eighties I was always in his mum's shop (World’s End) so I met him there a few times. We started going out to clubs like the Mud Club together and then shared a flat together. When he started his ‘Agent Provocateur’ line he asked me to design the first logo. We also heard that you went to school with our editor. Was he a real swot? I’m not sure whether he was a real swot or not but he always looked great. I would steal my older brother’s Bowie records and swap them for his punk rock records he must have been bored of them already. A very nice chap indeed.

Words by Ashley Simcox
“If there’s one city that can’t afford to get any warmer…. it’s Bangkok.” Justin Dunne (Bed Supperclub’s General Manager) 10:10 is an environmental project that originated in the UK. The goal is simple; achieving it is the hard part. To cut 10% of the UK’s carbon emissions by 2010 by calling on people, businesses, organisations, and schools to work together through committed sustainability efforts. So far, 58,599 people, 1,550 Schools, 1,272 organizations, and 2,317 businesses have signed up. Bed Supperclub is now proudly one of those businesses. 1010’s main areas of reduction are electricity, gas, road transport and air travel. Bed is doing its bit wherever possible, efforts include encouraging employees to use public transportation to get to work and carpooling. “We also have low-pressure sinks, we switch on the air-con later, and use LED light bulbs instead of fluorescent ones, which makes for a nice dim ambiance.” - Justin For its Black Market Monday evenings, the club held ‘Earth-Hour’ - inspired candlelight events and now holds Green Envy Fridays, where once a month, Chef Cameron presents a “Locavore” menu cooked from food that’s sourced less than 100 miles away. Bed supports local farmers! And because not seeing immediate results can be quite discouraging, Bed Supperclub reinforces good behaviour with its employees as well as the local community. If you are spotted doing something pro-environment, you may receive coupons for free entry, free drinks, or even free dinner, all depending on the specific accomplishment. ‘People often appreciate efforts to help the environment, but many people will not go out of their way to support or visit a venue that is implementing many environmentally conscious endeavours.’ This Summer, Bed is undergoing major renovations, which will result in it being even more environmentally sound. Check back with us to find out the progress. And in the meantime, cut down your own carbon footprint! www.1010uk.org 18

BED HOPPING by Sabina Ahuja
ANGSANA MALDIVES On the shimmering sapphire waters of the Indian Ocean, time stands still at this tranquil tropical resort with its swaying palm trees, mesmerizing underwater coral gardens, pristine powdery beaches and luminous turquoise lagoons. 22
How’s the restaurant? There’s only one restaurant and bar on the InOcean Villas but it offers Indian, Mediterranean and international cusine. What’s in the neighbourhood? Angsana Velavaru is completely cut off from the nearest mainland; the only way to reach this heaven-on-water is by taking a 45-minute seaplane from the nearest city. That said, you can grab a snorkel, take a 30-second stroll and dive into a world of exotic marine life or skim the waves in a catamaran. So tell me again, why should I stay here? How often do you get to wake up in bed, look Angsana, South Nilandhe Atoll (Dhaalu Atoll), out the window, and see a baby manta ray and friend swimming by? The Maldives is one Republic of Maldives of the world's top sites for whale and dolphin watching, with a quarter of the world's species What’s the rate per night? USD2500 ++ and above per night including to be found here - this is the place for incredible experiences! breakfast
Where is it?
So tell us more about the rooms. Located on Velavaru, which means ‘Turtle Island’ in the indigenous Maldivian language, Angsana consists of 77 rooms on the island and 33 InOcean Water Villas. The 290 sq. m InOcean Sanctuary Villa is our favourite, it has two bedrooms and bathrooms, all furnished in striking orange decor, a daybed built over the ocean, an infinity pool with a 180 degree panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, and friendly manta rays that meet and mingle underneath the outdoor deck.
Not suitable for: Anyone that suffers from an abnormal fear of fish or the ocean, unfortunately the only way you can feel the sand in your shoes is if you get under the water. ‘Die Antwoord’ the self-appointed representatives of South African zef rap-rave culture. 25
‘Die Antwoord’ is Afrikaans for ‘The Answer.’ Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Tek created Die Antwoord in 2009, The video for their single 'Enter the Ninja' became a viral phenomenon on the internet, delivering millions of hits to their website and causing massive bandwidth headaches for their South African hosting provider. The music is fast, furious and full on. Ninja raps like a nail gun shooting rusty six inch nails which Yo-Landi diffuses with saccharine sweet melodies. Their debut album will be released online soon. If your name Die Antwoord means ‘The Answer’ then what’s the question? Wat Pomp? This is Zuid Afrikaanse slang meaning: What's pumping? You’ve been friends since you were young kids, did you have any aspirations back then to achieve the international attention that you’re getting now? We did not know something like this would happen. This is all quite a surprise to us, a secret wish come true. You often use the term ‘Zef’ , can you explain what it means? Zef means The Ultimate Style, or The Next Level. When you tap into your inner Zef, then you unleash your Full Flex How does it feel to have your music reach people in faraway places like Thailand? It feels very nice. What do people in your neighbourhood think of your success? They are all very proud of us.
You mentioned that you really want to do a video with District 9 director fellow South African Neill Blomkamp. Are you any closer to making this happen? Yes, Neill is making a music video with us now. Can we expect to see it in Asia? We want to come to Asia big time! Yo-landi is quite small, so she always has to buy children's clothes. So sometimes we shop in China town where the clothes fit her nicely. So she is very excited to get some next-level phunky Asian fashion when we come to your town. We have not travelled so much, so this is all going to be big time fun for us! Is there anything that you can’t eat? Meat.
Thank you antwoord !! We love you! Thanks also for such nice questions! We love There’s been a lot of discussion on whether people with love in their hearts!! Die Antwoord are too real to be true- what’s NINJA and YO-LANDI your comeback to the cynics? Jou ma se poes in a fish paster jar. This is Zuid http://www.dieantwoord.com/ Afrikaanse slang for: Your mummy's private http://www.myspace.com/dieantwoord parts in a fish paste jar.

FUN FACTS ABOUT DIE ANTWOORD • NINJA has a secret fairy forest tattoo on his left arm that he covers with make-up. • Just to clear up the rumours: NINJA and YO-LANDI are not in a relationship. They are just good friends. NINJA says: Relationships are fickle, like the relationship you are having with your body. • Yo-landi's mom cuts her hair, but she gets her hair dyed at SCAR HAIR. Yo-landi says: It's always important to remember your roots. • NINJA likes dolphins • YO-LANDI likes sexy boys with no front teeth. • DJ HI-TEK likes his PC computer. • Anyone who doesn't like DIE ANTWOORD is a poes. 27

Cover Story
BOY GEORGE by Paul Hampshire
Hi, how are you? I’m feeling great, thank you. I’ve been working to a tight schedule these past few weeks, flirting between many hours in the studio working on album ideas and collaborations with people like Mark Ronson and Mike Snow, to completing the first leg of my DJ world tour. There has also been a development with a BBC drama that deals with the period before Culture Club, something which I hope they capture the mood of that period because it was a time of great adventure and emotional growth. Tell us more about your new single- Amazing Grace. Do you have any other productions on the horizon? I have plans to release an album later this year but first I wanted to work on a single project. This led me to doing a duet with Portuguese Fado singer called Ana Lains, who has the most beautiful voice ever. So ‘Amazing Grace’ is the first of my studio releases this year. We loved your autobiographies 'Take it Like a Man' & 'Straight' Will there be a third? I’d like to think so although whilst a lot has been and gone in recent times, at present I feel there’s still so much more to come that it would be doing any immediate book’s ending an injustice. So for now no but who knows what the future will bring. 31
BOY GEORGE
WILL PLAY AT BED SUPPERCLUB ON MAY 27 32
Congratulations, you recently celebrated your two year anniversary of being clean and sober. How do you get your kicks these days? Love & friendship, family, good food, intelligent conversation and of course music, which is very important to me. The past few weeks have been an extremely fruitful period in the studio and definitely made me realise that I'm blessed to be able to do the things I love and make a good living out of it. You seem to be an avid Twitter fan – Who do you like to follow? Mostly friends, I’m fortunate to have lots of wonderful people in my life who mean so much and Twitter is a good way to keep in contact with them. As for the celebrity side of Twitter, who’s eating what, where, when, that just bores me! Do you ever feel the need to get some distance from your public persona? If yes, how do you do that? Anybody who says no is lying. Being in the media storm day-to-day is unhealthy for the mind and body. Being a Gemini I have many sides or moods so it’s vital for my own state of mind that I’m able to break away from this ‘public-persona’. Because of this, in recent years my appetite for drama has greatly diminished as I aim for a life of peace and joy. How I actually do this is something you’ll just have to guess...? If you could go back and spend a night in one of the many fabulous clubs that you've hung out in, which would it be? I prefer not to look back in my life but if I had to choose one then it would probably be 1979 to New Romantic club called Planets, which is actually where I jumped on the DJing bandwagon. Back in those days it was very primitive - vinyl, no mixing - it was pretty different to how it is today but there was a real energy to the club at that time. What can we expect to hear when you DJ at Bed Supperclub in Bangkok? Has your music style changed much in recent times? My sound has certainly evolved; expect a lot of uplifting house with a good mix of big room sounds and underground cuts. This date is definitely one of the highlights on my tour schedule!
TINGLE IN THE NETHERLANDS

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
‘ I Lost My Heart To A Starship Cleaner Drinking Flash in outer space’ Owen J and Helên T, a sound painter and a singing poet, unite to produce a wicked musical debut, the downright dirty slapper of a track ‘Prostitute’s Handbag’. Words by Ashley Simcox Despite the name, the duo hails from Manchester…
“I’ve always referred to the nether regions of the body as ‘The Netherlands’. When we were coming up with a name, we were shouting out strange combinations of words at random, I just shouted out TINGLE IN THE NETHERLANDS and we both fell about laughing, so that was it.” Helên
One should be careful not to dismiss the dark humour that’s omnipresent in their lyrics as being in any way flippant.
“The intention is that each phrase of lyrics evokes a mood or an image in much the same way as a haiku would, or maybe a few words will take the listener off on a flight of fancy or into a bizarre private reverie!” Helên
With their playfully provocative words and song titles like ‘Forest of Cocks’, I wondered if they were worried about negative feedback, but as Helên explains they refuse to compromise their art. 35
36
“We would never censor ourselves; selfcensorship seems to have become the norm these days. Artists and comedians are restricting themselves in anticipation of being gagged by the powers that be, and play into the hands of the forces of fear and ignorance. We would never be crassly offensive or vulgar, or try and shock in a cheap way, but if something needs to be said then we have the confidence to say it." Helên
So what’s the inspiration behind this passion and creativity?
“Apart from the person who invented the kazoo, Matt Johnson of The The would have to be my all-time favourite artist – the ‘Soul Mining’ album is the best album ever.” Helên
And what about outside the realm of music?
“Helên and I both remember this one disturbing Scottish children’s programme from the 70s and 80s called Kovy’s Bridge. I remember one where this guy was shot in the nipples in a hall of mirrors after this catfish creature jumped out from a bank of machinery - that was on at 6.00pm.” Owen
Despite the revelation that their dream stage would be on Margaret Thatcher’s grave, they expect their first appearance to be somewhere in Manchester. Follow them or worship them : Facebook : search for Tingle In The Netherlands www.myspace.com/tingleinthenetherlands | twitter.com/TingleIn 37
ART
THE INVADER by Ploycarat Nana
" I don't expect anything special from onlookers. I like the idea that there are as many reactions as onlookers." He’s covered the globe, invading street corners, targeting traffic signs and even made his mark on many local monuments. The mysterious French artist’s moniker ‘Invader’ gives a clue to the concept behind his art. Small coloured tiles that form a mosaic in the shape of the 80s retro arcade game Space Invaders’ characters. Although not much is known about him, we do know for certain that he attended Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Invader put up his first mosaic tiles in the early 1990s in Paris. He usually chooses populated locations or tourist attractions, but some of his works have also been found in more secluded areas. In Bangkok, one of the most prominent locations is on one of the pillars of the sky train opposite Siam Discovery Center. It’s a small yellow Space Invader. However, the most famous location of Invader’s mosaic tiles is on the letter ‘D’ of the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles. The characters are not put up randomly, they follow a specific pattern with clues to find the next characters, they also form a sort of urban treasure map for all to enjoy. Invader describes his art as an invasion of the classical art of mosaics as well as the modern digital art of video games. He held his first ever solo show in London last year on 'Rubik Cubism'. His latest works show a transition from video game characters to Rubik cubes that form different portraits of celebrities. The work is very reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s Pop Art movement. Invader is the ideal artist for this issue’s ‘distance’ theme because not only does he represent the physical distance he travels throughout the world to implement his artistic invasion, he also represents the technological distance the arts world has come, from classical art of mosaics to modern digital art.

DESIGN ICON by Ploycarat Nana
MILLAU VIADUCT BY NORMAN FOSTER
40
Hidden within the Tarn Valley of France stands the majestic Viaduc de Millau, the world’s tallest and longest cable-stayed bridge. The bridge, which opened on 14th December 2004, was built as an alternative to the crowded A75 motorway from Clermont-Ferraud to Beziers It is longer than the Champs Elysees and the highest of the bridge’s seven pillars stands 62 feet higher than the Eiffel Tower! This cable-stayed bridge has a steel deck rather than the usual concrete roadbed, which makes it able to last 120 years (if we still use cars by then!)The bridge is truly one of Norman Foster’s greatest masterpieces, the man behind some of the world’s most monumental buildings such as The Millennium Bridge in London and the Hearst Tower in New York City. Foster worked in collaboration with the giant construction firm Eiffage, which follows the structural tradition of Eiffel’s works. Foster’s personal interest in the works of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright is evident in the façade and functionality of the Millau Viaduct. What is amazing about its construction is that it took Foster 10 years to design and four years to build because the weather conditions within the valley are harsh and the valley is so deep it is difficult for crossing. Foster designed the bridge to be slightly curved to give drivers a better visibility of the beautiful view of the valley and township of Millau. The iconic bridge representing modern France perfectly contrasts with the surrounding medieval town of Millau and its many bell towers. As well as the region’s famous gorges and medieval villages, Millau Viaduct has become an important attraction not to be missed. There had been opposition to the construction of the Millau Viaduct. For some, the viaduct represented danger to Millau’s local economy as visitors would be bypassing the township, while for others the toll implemented for using the bridge would discourage people from using it and would not solve traffic problems after all. However, since its opening, it has proven to be effective in lowering traffic jams and boosting local tourism. In 2006, the bridge went on to win the IABSE Structure Award. With so much energy and cost put into the construction (£220m.), it is impossible not to appreciate its grandeur. The Millau Viaduct has really set the bar high and stretched the limit of transport architecture, which so often receives nothing more than mundane design. 41

We meet corporate downsizer Ryan Bingham just as he’s poised to make the 10 million frequent flyer mile mark and right after he's met the frequent-flyer woman of his dreams. He travels from state to state firing people, living out of a suitcase and loving every second of it. That is until his boss reveals plans to introduce a new method of terminating employees by video conferencing that would effectively see him grounded. There are no special privileges awarded by American Airlines for reaching 10 million miles as depicted in the movie. Vera Farmiga used a body double for her nude scene. In an interview she stated she has no problems being naked in a film but she had recently given birth and ‘the breast milk running down would have been inappropriate’. Emily Blunt and Ellen Page were initially considered to play Natalie. Nestle crunch. Writing big cheques for social media gurus to hook up your Twitter to your Facebook and your blogfeed to your RSS Reader might be both unnecessary and foolish, but equally, running headlong DIY into the online world can too be dangerous – that is particularly so if your brand is superunscrupulous and you lack basic manners, like Nestle. Having 92,242 fans on your Facebook Fan Page is not always a good thing. In short: epic social media fail. Via White and Wong.
The hurt locked in. Bomb diffusion may be the most perfectly desired metaphor for America's role in the continuing Middle East conflict, but The Hurt Locker uses this as a guise to lure one into a false sense of approval, cheating one into jingoistic pride so that by the time we see the protagonists shooting at some faceless Middle Eastern Bond baddies the whole cinema is cheering – an effect that is heightened by the sense of relief that our key trio’s initial encounter is with handsome, English Ralph Fiennes in disguise and not local Arab militia. There’s no such relief though when we realise this is pro-war patriotism dressed up as peace. One can understand the amount of hurt locked in after the 9/11 tragedy, but is this sort of ethnocentric group therapy the way forward? No. And so as a movie, this deserves to, er, bomb.

Whether it’s comic books or Kung fu Panda, pruned poodles, photostickers or Harry Potter, roti buns, AF, yellow, pink or red shirts, Korean boy bands, Twilight, anime eyes or BB messaging, the fickle Thai frenzy bandwagon continues to flitter from one fad to the next. And with a whole TV channel dedicated to Lin Ping the Panda, streaming live video 24 hours a day, monitoring the animal in exactly the same position in its cage, toys occasionally thrown in to add colour to the frame, one is left wonder. ing what will eventually be of the panda when the the press strip down his qualifications for stardom. Lin Ping, I suspect, will probably conveniently get sent back to China where he’ll be left to ponder his life. Art by Lora Zombie 47

JACK BEATS & BOY 8-BIT Jack Beats & Boy 8-bit on one night ?? Yup, it's true; two of the UK’s most essential acts touch down at Bed for a night that already has Bangkok's music nuts flipping out! Get down early to get a good spot... This one is gonna be big. JACK BEATS: DJs Plus One & Beni G have both won Technics DMC world / national championships. Huge in the UK, Europe & Japan - you can't go to a club or turn on the radio without hearing a Jack Beats track. Currently the UK's most sought after remix team; epic reworkings of the biggest tracks by the biggest UK artists of now (Florence & The Machine, La Roux, Passion Pit etc) are testament to this. BOY 8-BIT Pete Tong awarded 'Essential New Track' to Boy 8 Bit's 'Baltic Pine' last year. As well as Pete Tong, high profile fans include Armand Van Helden, Fake Blood, Annie Mac, M.A.N.D.Y... and Jack Beats! B8B's influences include 80's movie soundtracks by the likes of Van Gelis & Tangerine Dream, 90's rave / Jungle producers such as Shy FX & The Prodigy as well as prolific contemporary electronic artists such as Miss Kitten and Stuart Price aka Les Rhythms Digitales.

ALL ABOUT
BED
Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Bed GM, Justin Dunne
Are you really renovating? Yes, we are. After almost eight years, we feel that in order to preserve our coveted reputation of being on the leading edge of art, cuisine, sound, music, creativity, and décor, we will be closing our doors for these renovations sometime later this year. May we see images? We’re shy and don’t people watching us while we change, so all the design plans are being kept under wraps. Can you tell us what is being planned? Something is happening………see above. Who’ doing the renovation plans? Orbit Design (www.orbitdesignstudio.com), the brilliant design team that built Bed Supperclub in 2002, is handling the renovations. Are you saying that both rooms – the bar and the restaurant – will be closed during the entire period of renovation? The first stage of demolition will be to knock out many of the areas directly to the side and rear of Bed’s current structure, but these immediate changes will not affect Bed’s operations until later in the year. I though that you renovated the venue in 2009. Well, we added a new lobby, LED lights in the restaurant, and a new, kick-ass Nexo sound system in the bar (and made some serious upgrades in the restaurant), but the July, 2010 renovations will be much, much bigger. Will the renovations be “Green?” We are looking at all aspects of the renovation to establish where we can be environmentally conscious. What are we supposed to do when closes for the renovations? Well, we do have CDs for sale and Bed Sheets Magazine for you to read. We’re also looking at the possibility of hosting a couple of ‘Bed on Location’ parties while we’re closed. Will the exterior of Bed be visible during the time of renovation? At the moment, this also appears unlikely. 94
