9 > @ 7 8AJ : G J I 8JA Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Robyn, Mark Ronson, Roisin Murphy, Ke$ha, Alexandra Burke, Beth Ditto, M.I.A, Paloma Faith, La Roux. That’s quite a list of the pop stars who currently make up the European music scene, isn’t it? They have in common a love, reference and use of London’s club-scene creatives. Yet these people are lesser known: Scottee, Daniel Lismore, Jodie Harsh, Andre J, Mika Doll - and the exquisite Lady Lloyd. They are the ‘creative engine’ of this and yet are too often hidden behind the stars they inspire. The club-nights too: Circus, Shabba-Dabba-Da, Tranny Shack, Nancy, Wearable Art for Durable People, The Face—these often achieve cult status among generations throughout eras. Yet the people that make the nights are seldom talked about as much as the ‘stars’ for which they create a vital platform. 14

The Lady Lloyd 16

With the punks of the 80s and the ‘indie kids’ of the 90s, it had for a long time been assumed that the music youngsters listened to, was the heaviest influence on their fashion decisions. “I think the opposite is true”, says style-artist, Daniel Lismore, “I think fashion inspires music. The London fashion scene brings these people together and then seemingly out of nowhere this new music scene is created. Because people can’t directly hear the fashion, they don’t see at all”, he says, in a matter-of-fact kind of way. The London club-scene certainly does inspire fashion. Lloyd Dixon, alias "The Lady Lloyd" has a one-off look and has modeled for Vivienne Westwood. Vivienne even mentioned recently, “I don’t know about styles and trends. Much more to me is Lady Lloyd. He is fantastic”. The high-fashion streets are also laden with club-scene based artistes. Mika Doll, a leader of her own genre of style is the face of soon-to-go-huge makeup brand, Illamasqua, who have boutiques in all major Selfridges stores throughout England. The latest big names to watch out for are wonderfully exotic: Oozing Gloop, Sorapol Chawaphatnakul, Medusa, Uma Gawd, Pandemonia - The world awaits these impatiently for musical direction and fashion tips.

SORAPOL CHAWAPHATNAKUL Photographer Anthony Lycett ; http://www.anthonylycett.com

Describe what you do and who your are in three sentences. It’s rather difficult to define myself but I would say that I ‘m governed by my passions. I also know every step of what I am doing with my life. I live and breathe fashion. How long have you been in London and why did you choose to study there? I’ve always been quite familiar with English culture because my mother lived there for more than 30 years, so she instilled a positive attitude towards the UK in me. Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve always thought that London was the coolest place on the planet and now it’s where I call home. 18

We heard you’ve been doing designs for Lady Gaga. What’s happening with that? I’m not allowed to talk about it. It’s still top secret. What inspires you? Personally, I believe that inspiration is present all around us. My inspiration comes from what I like and what I am into. But it’s so hard to make people share my taste. So I often tone down my imagination to make it seem more ordinary. Who’s your favourite designer and why? I can’t focus on any one style so I‘ve got loads of favourite designers. So usually when people ask who my favourite designer is, I say that I don’t have one but I do like Viktor and Rolf and also Jean Paul Gaultier. If you could go out for a night with any club kid (past or present) who would it be and why? Definitely Daniel Lismore, because he’s my best friend and when I spend time with him I feel at ease and he makes nights out much more fun plus he knows everything about me.

Sorapol and Danial at Bed Supperclub

Who would you most like to see wearing your designs? Camilla Parker-Bowles. If she wants to be the next queen of England, she needs more style.

How’s the restaurant? There are eight different restaurants and bars. The main dining venue is ‘Oceans’, which boasts a beach bar and oceanside dining. Do check out the homemade bakery which has scrumptious treats on offer. 22

Come for: This unique and exciting Lost World-themed hotel is a true destination in its own right. As well as the beach-front water park, guests can also enjoy direct access to the beach. Kids can let off steam in the camp safari and games room, while mum enjoys a relaxing aromatherapy massage and dad goes So tell me again, why should I stay here? The hotel’s amenities and facilities are designed looking for Indiana Jones in the ‘Lost World’. to serve every requirement. There’s a state-ofthe-art business centre, a kid’s club, infinity pools, If I want to book now where do I go ? water parks and even a special pool for seniors. rsvnmgrcmbr@chr.co.th Tel: +663 830 1234 Not suitable for: Anyone expecting a crystal clear ocean will be very disappointed because no matter how much the government has tried to solve the problem of Pattaya’s murky waters, its efforts have proved unsuccessful. What’s in the neighbourhood? The nearby attractions have something for everyone from bungee jumping to deep sea diving, Big Buddha Hill or if you’re really brave you could explore the sinful neon nightlife. Our preferred pastime was the go-kart track.

MUSIC ..........................................................................................................................................

You’ve played all over the world from Japan to Germany; does any show stand out from the rest? We’ve performed in many different places, we’ve played everywhere from big stages to small stages, concert halls, conference rooms, clubs, bars, hotels, art galleries, parks, shopping malls, even on the street at a busy junction. All of them were exhilarating in their own way. We have a very diverse collection of songs, so we play different sets and often rework songs to create a suitable mood, that’s why Redtwenty performances are never repetitive. We do love shows abroad because quite often the audience doesn’t know who we are so it’s like starting out from scratch again. But if I were forced to pick one place it would have to be Bangkok. It just feels so good when you walk out on a stage and fans start screaming. 24

How different is Redtwenty now to the Redtwenty that first started 10 years ago? For us it’s the same really. I don’t really know what other people think, but that doesn’t matter to us anyway. We just do what we do regardless. Who’s left from the original line up? The band still has the original line up: Bank, Bengz, Chim, Oaks. During our 10 years together, we’ve occasionally brought in additional musicians for live shows. We’ve also teamed up with other artists at times to make special songs. Tell us about your new album. The new album, is called ‘TwentyTen’, to celebrate Redtwenty’s 10 year anniversary. Plus all the songs were written in 2010. www.myspace.com/redtwentyfanclub 25

KISS AND TELL

..........................................................................................................................................

BUTTON UP REVEALS GENTLEMEN’S SECRETS THROUGH KISS’N TELL COLLECTION With the belief that even the most refined gentleman can reveal mysterious hints of “love secrets” at the right place and the right time, fashion house Button Up teases everyone with a mischievous collection just in time for the season of love. Launched this February, warm-blooded males (and their partners!) will surely take pleasure in this latest line throughout the year. The “Kiss’n Tell” collection is inspired by a philosophy that love is the seventh sense of humanity, ultimately expressed through passion. Button Up espouses this not only through classic, slim-fit, and casual-cut shirts in a variety of charming yet expressive pinkish tones, but also through a choice of sensual kiss-marks at intimate “hot spots” on a man. Each “kiss”, depending on where it marks a shirt, gives a hint of a tale or “secret” of the man who bears it. Of course, every secret is best complemented by little details which give clues to a gentleman’s playful personality . For this, Button Up features a special edition Kiss’n Tell range of neckties, bowties, cufflinks, boxers and the like. The right time to reveal sensuous secrets is coming soon. Button Up’s Kiss’n Tell collection will be available at their flagship Thonglor store as well as at Central Chidlom, Central Ladphrao, Central Pinklao and Siam Paragon. 30

Film Facts Many of the costumes used in the movie were originals culled from the Club Kids themselves, which gives an authentic feel to the overall design and look of the film. Marilyn Manson showed up with his own prosthetic boobs, butt and blonde wig. Macaulay Culkin visited the real Michael Alig in prison to prepare for his role. Insiders say the drug use in the movie was toned down from Michael Alig and James St. James's actual habits for fear it would seem unbelievable. The exteriors of Michael's apartment building were shots of where the real Michael Alig actually used to live. The actresses who play Nid and Noi are real sisters. KALA MARE PATCHARASRI BENJAMAS Words by Parkorn Tiyajai & Thanarut (Bank) Benjabhokee Photo by Sanya Souvanna Phouma

34

Hi Kalamare! How are you and what are you working on right now? I’m great thanks. I’m very busy at the moment hosting a few TV shows for Channel 3 and writing columns for 'Matichon', 'Cleo' magazine and Chic Mistery.com. I also do the occasional mc job and radio work. You’ve notched up over 100,000 Twitter followers. How did you get the Twitter-bug? My close friend, Woody (Milintachinda), turned me onto to it just over a year ago, while we were having somtam in Siam. Now I’m an addict! I’m a real Twitter-chitter-chatter. I love the instant feedback on comments I make. Although I must admit, I never expected to get as many followers. I usually tweet about fun stuff, news updates, gossip and also to make merit. 35

“Woody (Milintachinda), turned me onto Twitter, while we were having somtam in Siam.

36

What about clubbing? Are you a party girl? Weekdays I have to wake up very early, usually around 7am to prepare for my TV show. By Friday, the week’s caught up with me and I’m usually feeling pretty tired. So I don’t really go out that much on Saturday nights but when I do, I go full-throttle and party hard. I even have my own dance which I call ‘topping’, it's basically throwing caution to the wind and just spinning around on the spot. Is there anything that you can’t eat? Nothing ! I eat everything ! Kalamare’s best seller ‘Men are like Dogs That Don’t Come from Mars’, implies that she really knows how to handle the opposite sex. So we decided to put it to the test and ask her best friend Woody Milintachinda what she would do if confronted with the following. A guy she’s dating turns up at a restaurant with his t-shirt tucked into his jeans and sporting the biggest, ugliest trainers that she’s ever seen. What would Kalamare do? A) Fake illness and rush out of the restaurant spluttering that she will call him later, which of course she won’t. B) Decide to ignore the fact that he's dressed like a twerp because it’s the man inside that she’s interested in. C Carry on with the meal but make him promise her that she can take him shopping to sort out his wardrobe. She’s in a club and notices that her girlfriend's boyfriend is dancing arm in arm with another guy. What would Kalamare do? A) Walk straight up to them and demand to know what he hell is going on, adding that if she doesn’t get a reasonable explanation it’s going to be the subject of her next tweet. B Call her friend immediately and tell her that she now knows why her boyfriend loves watching ‘Sex and The City’ and always picks out her new dresses. C) Wrap her arms around them both, start dancing and ask if they fancy going out to a gay club afterwards. She goes out on a blind date with a gorgeous guy and really seems to hit it off. However, its two days later and he still hasn’t called her. What would Kalamare do? A) Forget him and stay young free and single. B) Get his number and give him a call suggesting that they meet up again. C This could never happen because she wouldn’t be seen dead on a blind date. Which one would Kalamare go for? A He's no looker, in fact he could be a stand in for a young Woody Allen but he's just as funny and tells her fascinating facts. B) His IQ is only slightly higher than an illiterate but he’s so handsome even straight guys give him a second glance. C) He’s just an average Joe but loves her madly and always knows what she’s thinking. 37

HOLLY GOLIGHTLY Victoria Kirkwood - London 2011. 38

This blend is named after an early ‘Café Society’ fashion icon, a vintage version of a Club Kid, from the Truman Capote novel Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It smells like a cocktail but is designed to help you unwind and detox from the social whirl. Juniper has been used ceremonially since antiquity and burnt to ward off contagious diseases. You may recognise the aroma as is its flavours include gin and other spirits. Add mandarin and lavender for a light and sophisticated scent which will get you back on your feet after a night of partying or lift and inspire you before an evening out.

Juniper supports the body’s yang energy to flush out dampness and cold. Psychically it wards off bad spirits increasing confidence and drive.

Mandarin

Mandarin is a lovely light and gentle essence. It will banish negativity and transform irritation to joy.

Lavender

Lavender is well known for its calming effect on the nerves. Soothing and smoothing, it will counter both physical and mental tension.

Meanwhile I have found a very nice supplier of quality Aromatherapy products in Chiang Mai where you can order online. As they focus on local products not all of the essential oils are available so sadly no Juniper. Have a look though at http://www.herbbasicschiangmai.com/.

WRITE ON ..........................................................................................................................................

TISHA 'MISTY' CHAIWORASILP Paul Hampshire

Tisha 'Misty' Chaiworasilp …. the driving force behind the magazine that set the tone for a whole new wave of cutting edge ‘youth’ publications. Your ‘POP’ magazine is still talked about years after it stopped being published. Why do you think that is? I’m still pretty shocked and surprised when strangers come up to me and say how much they admired ‘POP’ magazine and how it inspired them. I think it was probably because we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, our aim was to incorporate fun, humour and eccentricity.

Which film was better than the book? ‘Dolores Clairborne’ is one of my all time favourite films. It’s the quintessential bad book that became a marvellous movie.

What are you working on at the moment? Currently, I am an editor/director/writer of a website called www.poppaganda.net. It is a reincarnation of ‘POP’ magazine. I am also poised to publish my third book, which is a collection of my articles that appeared in the 'Post Today' newspaper.

The theme for this issue is Club Kids. Who’s Bangkok’s most famous club kid? My close friend Aey Bandit. He goes to every party that’s worth going to.

Which book do you wish you had written? Definitely ‘Metamorphosis’ by Franz Kafka. His curious concepts intrigue me, as does his writing style, plots and overall vibe.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve worn to a party? I had this crazy outfit which I rented from a costume shop. It was a Marie Antoinette style What was the first book you read? It was probably the Grimm Fairy Tales. I read dress complete with big crinoline, feather it so many times that the spine split and the headpiece and full-on jewellery. I wore it to a costume party. Can you imagine the looks I pages started falling out. got in that dress walking down RCA What’s the most overrated book? A lot of Stephen King’s books. I read some of his novels just because I wanted to know what the deal was and why he was so famous. Eventually I came to the conclusion that his books actually suck.

FOOD

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner so here are five foods to give you a head start when eating your way to a healthier heart. Blueberries are packed with fibre, vitamin C and the powerful heart-friendly antioxidant that’s responsible for their dark blue colour, anthocyanin.

Salmon is a great source of protein and is also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Experts advise eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week for benefits that go beyond heart health.

Soy Protein - readily available in Thailand, this inexpensive, high-quality protein contains fibre, vitamins, and minerals; all the ingredients for a heart-healthy meal.

Oatmeal - a diet high in oats can reduce the risk of heart disease. R esearch shows oats lower cholesterol levels, keep you regular, and may help prevent certain cancers.

Spinach - Hands down, spinach is the lion of the vegetable kingdom. Its rich, dark colour comes from the multiple vitamins, phytochemicals, and minerals that also combat disease and prevent heart disease.

HANGOVER MYTHS DEBUNKED The Hair of the Dog: Drink More! You may feel better temporarily but all your’re doing is dulling your senses and delaying the inevitable. Pop aspirin or ibuprofen while you drink . Wrong ! Aspirin increases acid secretion in the stomach and does nothing to help eliminate alcohol from the body. Drink lots of water the morning after a night out on the tiles. While it’s true that drinking water the next day will help, it's more important to drink water while you are drinking and before your hangover sets in. The headache that you’re feeling is caused by your body losing water that’s needed by vital organs such as the brain. So try to match a glass of water for every couple of alcoholic drinks. Eat before you sleep. Actually, it’s better to eat before you drink rather than before going to sleep because after a meal the food in your stomach slows the absorption of alcohol in the bloodstream. If you are busy digesting pad thai then your body has time to process the alcohol and that helps prevent a hangover.

DO YOU REALLY NEED A PERSONAL TRAINER? Even the Material Girl needs a trainer to stay in shape. Yes there’s a good reason why celebs like Madonna, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have personal trainers. It’s true that your trainer knows a lot about helping you get in shape and lose weight to be a healthier and more beautiful you. A good fitness trainer will be able to analyze your needs and create a fitness programme that is right for you. They will calculate the appropriateness of a certain program with regards to your fitness level, create the programme according to your specific needs plus keep you stimulated and inspired by giving you activities that don’t bore the socks off you. 55

ONE MAN'S FOOD

HEALTH FREAKS & HEDONISTS

Or How BlackBerry Messenger turned me into a weight-loss coach Photo and Words by Sanya Souvanna Phouma (not a Ph.D.)

It all started with a routine "Hello" after New Year's Eve. I was looking through my contacts on the new Blackberry that I had got for Christmas when I randomly decided to say 'Hi' to a friend, living in Paris He later went on to complain about his weight. He is 39 year-old, happily married with three kids and runs a hedge-fund that has offices in London, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong. "How much do you weigh?" I asked. "88 Kg" he answered. "Well, I've lost 15kg in four months following a blood-type diet" I told him, on the chat screen of the BBM and then went to ask "What's your blood type?". He informed that it was 'A', which happens to be the same as mine. Since then, we have been chatting constantly throughout the day. Me, randomly checking what he's eating and what kind of exercise he's been doing. Him, well, trying to be as sincere as possible in his reports. Our deal: a certain amount of thousands of Euros for me if he reaches a certain weight by Valentine 's Day, by combining a proper diet with regular exercise. What makes the deal even more alluring for me is that come February 14, I get 1000 Euros for every kilo he loses above the target weight. 56

My two conditions were that he consults his physician about our proposed plan and that he took vitamin supplements every morning. So he's been keeping up with the daily regime of lemon in warm water upon rising, oatmeal and low-fat yogurt with blueberries or some other healthy fruit for breakfast. He's managed to cut out the sodas (especially Diet Coke). I also pay special attention to helping him manage his snacks as Paris can be a terrible city for snacking. Just last week he asked me "How can I make you motivated to coach me in the long run?", implying that he wanted to continue beyond Valentines day. We finally agreed on a deal of a monthly allowance (less than what he pays his maid). He went on to say, "I can get you other clients, I know lots of guys under stress and who do not have time to look after what they eat" "Sure" I replied . "but let's get you in shape first".

BlackBerry Torch with touch screen available in Central Chidlom. Blueberries and starfruits can be pruchased fresh daily in Villa supermarkets.

ALL ABOUT BED

Frequently Asked Questions by Bed GM, Justin Dunne

.......................................................................................................................................... I didn’t know that you guys had a restaurant – I thought that you were only a club. Yup, nine years later and this is still the biggest misconception about us. Since we opened in 2002, we’ve always had the restaurant but, it often unfortunately, stands in the shadow of the bar/club. In an on-going effort to push the restaurant’s visibility, we are offering more special dinners (wine dinners, tequila weekend dinners, etc). What time do you close? On most nights, we are open until 2:00 am. However, with local approval, our busier nights usually remain open until 3 am (at least at the time of this printing).

My taxi driver took us to Soi 26 rather than here to Soi 11. What’s up with that? Because our address is actually “26, Soi Sukhumvit 11,” many drivers / concierges incorrectly read the address and believe that we are on Soi 26 rather than Soi 11 – a difference of about one hour in traffic. Frustrating indeed. We always make sure that the concierges around town have the Bed Supperclub map. Why are your wines so damn expensive? Yes, this is very unfortunate. Due to the 400% tax on both foreign and local wines (geared in part to protect the consumption of local Thai beverages), our prices are forced to reflect this tragedy. How’s business? Good. Very good. We’ve been very blessed. Yes, Thailand has had some rough challenges in the past few years, but we have been very fortunate to miss the most brutal parts of these challenges. We chalk this up to a great loyalty base of guests and our own willingness to invest in creativity and changing the themes often. On the eve of local elections, why are you not allowed to sell alcohol? As part of a police-enforced request, “Sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks is prohibited in the constituency from 6 pm on Saturday to midnight of Sunday, and police will strictly enforce the law.” This ban is to ensure sobriety (in the public). Why do I need an ID? Why are you so strict? From the Foreign and Commonwealth website here in Thailand: "By law, you must carry your passport with you at all times in Thailand. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport." Although this is rare, because we are a very high profile venue, the local authorities do keep a very close eye on us. Thus, we ask all guests to carry an official, government issued ID – a good copy of your passport is fine. How do I receive a Bed World Card? Our Bed World Card is given to guests strictly through word of mouth. It's given to guest who have shown incredible loyalty over the years. Justin Dunne 94
