LDN by TEE LAPAN

Time flies. I can hardly believe that we are almost halfway through 2010. So, this issue of Bed Sheets is all about London, the place I now call home. I love this city. So many new cool trends in music, fashion, food and art that take the world by storm start on London’s streets and that’s just one of the reasons that I love it here so much.

24

So my life still orbits around the world of Rihanna. Her UK tour has been a megasuccess; the London gigs totally sold out and looked totally fabulous. I snapped a few shots especially for you guys. I also got to work with this amazing designer who’s become a really dear friend. Fannie Schiavoni is Swedish but lives and works in London. She’s just received an award for ‘Best Young Designer’ here in the UK. Gaga wore her stuff for the cover of GQ magazine. Check out her designs here: http://www.fannieschiavoni.com We used her jewellery for Rihanna’s new video, ‘Rock Star’. Princess of pop, Kylie has a new single out. Joseph Kahn, one of our directors, did the video: super sexy, lots of half-naked men and women getting on top of each other, literally, so watch out for it.

The other exciting news is that Madonna’s film on Malawi - ‘I Am Because We Are’ - got nominated in the documentary category of the VH1 ‘Do something! Awards’. If you haven’t seen it, try to get hold of a copy but have the tissues ready, coz it gets the tear ducts going.

Finally, I came across this guy Nick Cave (not the Australian musician, songwriter, and author).

I am not sure if I’d call him a designer or not. He does these crazy costumes called ‘soundsuits’ that are colourful wearable fabric sculptures. He’s actually a teacher at SAIC in Chicago. I Speaking of Madonna, Joanna Newsom find his stuff very interesting and out-of-thisplayed a brilliant show at the Royal Festival world, although I am still trying to decide Hall. The RFH is part of the South Bank, a whether I actually like it or not. I’d love to put fifty-year old Brutalist urban architectural Gaga in them. monument: a concrete jungle of culture on the river right in the heart of London. Newsom had ridden into town amidst a small storm of controversy. Having derided Lady Gaga for making the same trite pop music as all her peer group… but with skimpier outfits, she revealed that whilst people were comparing Gaga with Madonna, she didn’t think that much of Madonna anyway. I wonder what Gaga’s monsters will make of these classical diva daggers?

Hatched in the virtual world of Myspace, The Opiates: Billie Ray Martin, melody/lyric writer, and Robert Solheim, co-writer and music producer, originate electro beats injected with soulful sound.

31

Solo artist, DJ, and collaborateur, Billie Ray Martin reveals what’s behind her latest project. Dubbed the “Carpenters of Electro”, the duo release their first album, 'Hollywood Under the Knife' later this year. "It was two people who did not have any expectations and who ended up with a surprising result. Lyrically, the misfits of society always inspire me. This is what 'Hollywood Under the Knife' is about. As far as the music goes, we just followed Robert’s inspiration for new tracks and sounds. As if it’s instinctual, he needs no direction; he is unique." The lyrics playfully mock our materialistic society, while half disguised in a ‘pop’ overcoat. "Lyrically it seems to be all about human beings who are in search of identity and go through physical processes of change to find it, like plastic surgery and sex changes. I, myself, come from the red-light district of Hamburg and grew up with people in search of some kind of identity. My muses tend to be freaks, superstars, nobodies who act like freaks, and nobodies who act like superstars.

‘Now she’s dropped the booze and drugs and discovered Haagen Dazs. Her lips are injected with half her ass. And she looks like the other Girls’

Constant musical exploration allows The Opiates to transcend both underground and commercial boundaries. -Oprah’s Book of the Month Club Part II "I t was supposed to be underground, ambient tracks that maybe three people would want to hear. When we wrote a song called 'Rainy Days and Saturdays' we realised that this was a lovely pop song. Too lovely we thought. With a punk-like attitude we finally said, 'Fuck it, we'll give it to them' - whoever 'them' is.'’ The Opiates aside, I wondered what the best morning wake-up album was… ‘’John Cale and Lou Reed’s 'Faces and Names' from 'Songs for Drella’ - actually the whole album really!’’ And what’s something that we would never catch Billie eating for breakfast…. ‘’I cannot eat anything with wheat or sugar- which isn’t an easy task.’’ To get your hands on a copy of ‘Hollywood Under the Knife’ visit: www.billieraymartin.com

Thaitanium were gunning for hip hop years before the trend took the world’s youth cultures by storm and went massive. The Thai trio proved their game when they opened shows in Bangkok for 50 Cent and Fort Minor. Their entertainment enterprise exploded and the band became a top Thai hip hop brand when they launched their own clothing line. They also have their own TV show and are currently making a feature length film. The sons of Siam spoke to Bed Sheets on the eve of their fifth album release. 37

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Ian Batten

by Julie Anderson Ian Batten is no new kid on the block but his new collection of shirts and jackets sell out in days in London’s groovy B store on Saville Row. This is because he’s always first off the block with inspired clothing and an exquisite sense of line and attention to detail and feel for fabric. Julie Anderson talks to him to find out why he is an outstanding yet relatively undiscovered yet highly original designer .

Ian has a studio and shop on the Archway Rd in Highgate N6 London. He also sells in the Livingstone Studio in Hampstead and mainly in B store on Saville Rd London.

I know you describe yourself as ‘someone who makes clothes’ but what is it that inspires you for a new design? I’m inspired by things that go wrong. I love that quote from Miles Davis ‘If you make a mistake you learn from it therefore there are no mistakes’. I love that shot in Yohji Yamamoto's fashion book of the 1960s factory workers where the workers' shirts are all buttoned up the wrong way... You taught fashion at London's prestigious Royal College of Art .. What did you try to communicate most to the students? I'd try to teach them not to draw so much and rather look at what cloth can do. Drawing is too 2D. For example I showed them a Comme des Garçons two piece suit and they all bowed as soon as they knew who the designer was but I said .. Look this is basically just a two piece suit.... I wanted them to think about cut and proportion more. I’m still learning myself all the time about altering proportions and how that can work.

42

What is the meaning of fashion? Fashion is something ephemeral I feel I have nothing to do with it. It’s more to do with trends. If you want to design fashion for young girls then you need to go to someone like my 14 year old grandchild who studies textile design and ask her what she thinks and take it from there. Fashion is buying into a lifestyle. People use it to give themselves an identity. You also design clothing for women which tends to have an androgynous feel. Why is that ? Is it to do with the current underground trend for androgyny in London? I used to design exclusively for women up until 1989 when my partner at the time and I decided to focus on menswear. Then in the last few years I started to design for my partner who is Japanese so I started to do it without realising it. But I have always loved the Japanese male and female look and possibly I’ve been unconsciously designing for them. What to you is a fashion faux pas? It’s when someone tries too hard. If someone comes into my shop and they try something on and ask me if I think it works I will tell them if it doesn’t, I don’t care if I lose a sale. www.bstorelondon.com BTW....

ART MALCOLM MCLAREN January 1946 – April 2010 by Ploycarat Nana

Behind every popstar/rockstar story there is usually a cunning and controversial manager plotting and planning in the wings. However, punk impresario and Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren preferred to do his scheming under the spotlight and courted the press like a Viagra fuelled Casanova in a convent. Together with his ex-wife Vivienne Westwood, he opened a fashion boutique on London’s trendy Kings Road called ‘Let It Rock’ and sold teddy boy clothes. They later changed the name to ‘Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die’ and eventually ‘Sex’. At the time they were selling Westwood's outré designs in rubber wear and bondage gear and T-shirts printed with McLaren's situationist slogans. The pair dressed London’s freaks and original punks and Malcolm became the pivotal driving force behind the punk explosion. The couple had a son, Joseph Corre, the co-founder of lingerie shop Agent Provocateur and part owner of the hippest menswear shop in London, ‘A Child of the Jago’ (see Bed Sheets issue 31). Inspired by the New York Dolls (who he managed for a brief moment), Malcolm formed the Sex Pistols and became the best-known manager in rock music since Brian Epstein and gained both admiration and infamy for the way he steered the Sex Pistols through their short and stormy career. There’s much debate on whether McLaren steered the punk revolution or merely stole the limelight. Malcolm was always public about his personality and even parodied himself as we see in Julien Temple’s punk movie ‘The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle’ which told the story of The Sex Pistols. Although the film was released in 1979 when the short-lived punk era was already over, it became a cult classic. McLaren was heavily criticised for ‘hogging the spotlight’ and presenting a narcissistic account of the band’s history. In the film, McLaren’s character was (ironically) called ‘The Embezzler’ and manipulated the Sex Pistols into his puppets for his own agenda of creating ‘cultured chaos’ through his creation of the punk movement. McLaren also managed a number of other bands, including Bow Wow Wow before producing his own records including the much-sampled track Double Dutch from the 1983 album 'Duck Rock.' He was an early pioneer of hip hop music and was responsible for introducing the catalyst that started the hip hop invasion in Britain. Perhaps the best phrase to describe McLaren’s success in a nutshell would be his own favourite saying; “Cash from chaos”. His departure from the world was larger than life to match his legacy, as the masses of punk followers gathered for his ostentatious funeral to pay tribute. 46

“THE POPULARITY OF PUNK ROCK WAS, IN EFFECT, DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT MADE UGLINESS BEAUTIFUL.” Malcolm McLaren

DESIGN ICON

THE DANDLELION by Ploycarat Nana

As the world struggles with countless economic crunches and financial meltdowns, the grandeur of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 has raised a few eyebrows. One of the highlights of the event is the ‘Dandelion’ pavilion, by Thomas Heatherwick. The London-based architect is also responsible for Britain's tallest sculpture, Manchester’s ‘B of the Bang’ and Littlehampton’s weather-beaten driftwood inspired East Beach Café. Thomas Heatherwick was born and bred in London. He studied 3D design at the Royal College of Art. Shortly after graduation his talent became apparent to the public eye when he was commissioned to design window displays for Harvey Nichols in London. His work won praise for its distinctive use of 3D laminated wood resembling tropical vines winding through the store’s windows. In 1994, he founded his own studio which has now expanded to a team of skilled architects and engineers. Heatherwick plays a very active role in the circle of people that are responsible for London’s new direction in design. He is a honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Art and was recently elected as Royal Designer for Industry. The uniqueness in Heatherwick’s style is his passion for fusing different conventional disciplines such as architecture, product design and sculpture and creating masterpieces that transcend the boundaries of art. He does not describe himself as an architect in the traditional sense, but rather a sculptor with an architectural perspective. Heatherwick’s latest creation is winning him much publicity and controversy. The ‘Dandelion’ pavilion caused a few stirs with some Brits complaining that too much of their tax money was spent on the project. The six-storey structure is made up of 60,000 transparent acrylic rods, each consisting of a plant seed taken from the Kew Garden Millennium Seed Bank. The pavilion resembles a giant dandelion which reflects the light during the day and shimmers when lit up at night. Heatherwick revealed that he wanted the Dandelion to appear in its most ‘organic’ form so it would sway in the breeze like the actual flower. After the exhibition the seeds will be distributed in schools throughout the U.K. and China. Heatherwick hopes to inspire Britain to move away from its current clichéd icons such as the Union Jack and Big Ben to more inspirational images that symbolize an eco-friendly and pioneering country. 48

TALKING PICTURES PERFORMANCE

London in the swinging sixties, the underground meets the underworld, identities and genders mutate like a volcanic lava lamp.

What’s the story? Macho mobster Chas, messes up a hit and needs to lie low. He stumbles on the ideal place in the form of a hippy house run by aging rock star Turner and his gorgeous partner Pherber. After unknowingly ingesting hallucinogenic drugs, Chas loses his inhibitions and gets drawn into the kinky shenanigans of the Bohemian household. As Chas loses his grip on reality, his sense of identity is completely undermined and his personality morphs into Turner. Tagline This film is about madness. And sanity. Fantasy. And reality. Death. And life. Vice. And versa. Film Fact Turner: Nothing is true, everything is permitted. Cast Mick Jagger ... Turner Anita Pallenberg ... Pherber James Fox ... Chas Michèle Breton ... Lucy

At a test screening in Santa Monica in March 1970, one Warner executive's wife vomited with shock in response to the film and paying customers had to be offered their money back.

'Performance' was the first feature film to employ the cutup technique (although the technique was employed in Released : 1970 experimental shorts in the 1960s and 1970s, most notably by Antony Balch). Directors Cammell and Roeg also went on to use this technique in their following movies, before it became commonplace in popular cinema. Quote Turner: The only performance that makes it, that makes it all the way, is the one that achieves madness. Am I right? Eh? Chas: [to Turner] You're a comical little geezer. You'll look funny when you're 50. Movie Goof if you look carefully when Chas is escorted out of Powis Square by thugs you’ll notice a boy walking backward and cars driving in reverse because the shot has been reversed. Movie Boiled Down To Three Lines Chas : “I’m a hitman and I’m mad I am!” Turner : “The only hits I have now are in the arm. Fancy some mushroom tea?” Chas & Turner : “Is that your hand or mine?”

Revisiting a London Classic; The Pimm’s Cup

A ‘Pimm’s Cup’ is one of two staple beverages at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta, and the Glyndebourne Opera Festival; the other staple is Champagne. Popular throughout the UK, but especially so in southern England, Pimm’s was first produced in 1851 and has seen a recent revival following Diageo’s advertising campaign featuring the phrase, “It’s Pimm’s O’clock!” Recipe: 1.5 oz Pimm’s No. 1 1 oz fresh lemonade 3.4 oz fresh cucumber water Top with Ginger Ale Garnish with orange, lemon, and cucumber The James Bond ‘Dr. No’ girl, ‘Honey Rider’ (Ursula Andress), is widely recognised as the first Bond Girl. This garnish is completely optional, but we highly recommend it. Justin Dunne 65

ALL ABOUT

BED

Frequently Asked Questions by Bed G.M, Justine Dunne

Have the recent protests in Bangkok affected business? Indeed they have. I’m safely guessing that there will be very, very few businesses here that have not been affected in various ways. Unlike the other recent incidents that have troubled Thailand: the riots in ’09, airport closure in ’08 and SARS in ‘03, these particular protests are being dubbed ‘life changing.’ Whether they will actually have such serious lasting implications remains to be seen but either way it will be interesting to watch and see how Bangkok responds. The severity of the protest results (other than the immediate effects of the curfew implemented the week of May 19-26th, 2010), will be uncertain for weeks and months to come. It was a tragic time. An unsettling time. An interesting time. And clearly a destructive time. What we do know is that Bangkok has always received great credit for its ability to rebound time and time again in the face of heavy challenges. We are once again, very hopeful that Bangkok is able to regroup and reclaim its position as one of the greatest cities in the world. OK, a lighter question: is it true that you now offer a Bed Supperclub iPhone application? How much does it cost? Yes, Bed Supperclub is proud to announce that we have our own iPhone, iPod, iPad application under the name “BSC Bangkok.” Download it from iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bscbangkok/id368677352?mt=8

Only the iPhone, iPod, or iPad? This application also works for the Android market as well. Please search “BSC Bangkok” and it can be linked with the QR code on this page and on our other promotional materials. Both apps are free ! With the current protests, are you still planning on renovating? If so, when? Yes, we are. After almost eight years in operation, we feel that in order maintain our iconic place on the leading edge of art, cuisine, sound, music, creativity, and décor, we will be closing our doors for what appears to be (at the time of printing), the month of September, 2010. I though that you had already renovated? Well, we have added a new lobby, LED lights in the restaurant, and a new, kick-ass Nexo sound system in the bar (with some serious upgrades in the restaurant), but the September, 2010 renovations will be much, much bigger. 94

Who’s doing the renovation design? Orbit Design www.orbitdesignstudio.com, the same design firm that built Bed Supperclub in 2002, is again on board and in charge of the renovations. What can you tell us about the renovations? May we see images? At this point, all we can say is “Something is happening…..” You usually hold your big, big Anniversary Party in September. If you are closed during September for renovations, when will the Anniversary Party be? At the moment, we are looking at hosting our eight year anniversary party in early November, 2010. What else is new? We’re currently implementing some big changes on Sunday nights. Earlier this month we began seeking the first ‘Bangkok DJ Idol’ and will soon start the ‘live auditions’ every Sunday. Keep an eye out for upcoming big changes on Mondays as well.
