Hello Well I have to admit I have had a real struggle to include everything I wanted into this edition. What with Halloween, Fireworks Night, Remembrance Day and so many local events it has been a bit of a squeeze even with more pages. With this in mind please accept my Bee Local Magazine is your apologies when I miss the occasional page number to squeeze in some local magazine for Leighton extra text or if I can’t include all the detail of events, I really am trying to fit in as much as possible particularly for the charities. I know this Buzzard and the sometimes causes frustration but I am always happy to receive a call to surrounding villages. provide more details if I can. Congratulations to Tracey who won the tickets to One Night of Rock in the Back to School edition. This edition we have not one, not two but three ticket competitions and you really do have much better odds of winning than the lottery! The competition has an email address on it but if you would like to send postal entries please post to Bee Local Magazine, 16 Slicketts Lane, Edlesborough, LU6 2JD making sure it arrives before the closing date. I have put together a page of Halloween events for the little ones (and not so little ones). It would be really lovely to see some costume and pumkin pictures so please tag in @BeeLocalMagazines on Facebook. If you like reading Bee Local I would really appreciate a review too. It seems too early to mention it but the Christmas countdown has begun and if your place of work is even talking about Secret Santa please consider the KidsOut Giving Tree instead. It is very simple to do and you can find details on page 47 (tell them Bee Local sent you). Next stop, the Christmas edition, wrap up warm until then and don’t forget the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 30th October. Andrena

NEWS FROM KIDSOUT Quiz Night Raises £600 for KidsOut and Breast Cancer Now.

Alison Johnson with quiz winners

A quiz night organized by a Leighton Buzzard mum raised more than £600 for KidsOut and Breast Cancer Now. More than 50 people took part in the fundraising event, which was planned by Alison Johnson and hosted at Leighton Buzzard Football Club on 2nd September 2016. The evening included a challenging quiz, raffle and reverse bingo, with competitors splashing their cash for the two causes. Leighton Buzzardbased KidsOut provides fun and positive experiences for disadvantaged children, while Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity. Alison, who is a Weight Watchers leader in the town, said: “I’ve been overwhelmed by the support we received. “I’m so thankful to the many

6

local business who provided prizes, including Room Number 9, To Have And To Hold, Poppy and Zach, Perfect Parties, Morrissons, Jules, Marisa Helene, Reasons To Be Cheerful, Harmars, Amy’s Nails and Metalyka. “Our quiz master, Jeff Hewitt, wrote the questions and gave his time free of charge, and everyone who came dug deep to ensure we raised an amazing total on the night – we beat our target by more than £100. Huge thanks also to Debbie Dunstan from the Football Club for hire of the venue.” KidsOut would like to thank Alison for all her hard work and congratulate her on a fantastic quiz night. Their share of the money will be spent on children in need of fun and happiness in the local area.

Mini ‘Question of Trivia’ Raises £1,000

KidsOut brought their Question of Trivia quiz to Leighton Buzzard for the third year in a row. Taking place on 16th September 2016, the scaled-down version of KidsOut’s larger corporate fundraising events was a success with over 80 people filling the town’s Rugby Football Club to take part. 15 teams took part in the general knowledge quiz, which tested subjects including geography, music, sport and history across 3 rounds, as well as a ‘fiendishly difficult’ round devised by the CEO. The evening included a main auction for a Drayton Manor Stay & Play pack and Monty Python signed print. The Rugby Club made a delicious lasagne supper which was

enjoyed by all. Local businesses kindly donated raffle prizes, including a meal for two at The Lancer, a Wildwood men’s clothing voucher, a ceramic pottery voucher at Reasons to be Cheerful, £25 One Delivery voucher, a photography session at SF Digital Studios and more. Local shops and business also advertised in the evening’s brochure. Overall, just over £1,000 was raised for disadvantaged children in the local area. KidsOut would like to especially thank Dave and Ruth at the Rugby Club for all their support and for helping to make the night the success it was. Special thanks also to Mary Hardy for being a fantastic quiz master, Alan Brandham for all his tireless hard work, and all who donated and/or attended.

Muddy Aubergine Toughed it Out

In March, local web and graphic design agency, Aubergine, committed to competing in the 12-mile, 28 obstacle Tough Mudder assault course to raise funds for our local kids’ charity, KidsOut. They’’ve trained hard every week, running miles, doing intensive CV exercises and preparing themselves for what is described as ‘The world’s most intense and insane physically challenging assault courses’.

On Sunday 25th September, Mark Tomkins, Steph Henman, Matthew Craft and James Thiel stood on the starting line, nervous, excited but keen to do their best and complete this feat - all in aid of raising funds for KidsOut who provide amazing support for those kids that have a tough break in life and just need a little normality of some toys or a day trip somewhere. Aubergine’s target was £500 but through the sheer generosity of friends, family and people they don’t even know have achieved a total of over £900 an incredible achievement and will go a long way to help some very disadvantaged kids. You will be able to see photos and video of them tackling this incredible feat on their website: www. aubergine262.com/blog, loving produced by their coach, Mark Nesbitt. Well done, Team Aubergine! #GoTeamAubergine

USE IT OR LOSE IT

s we age we can expect to experience changes in our bodies but just how much of this is inevitable? It turns out that it is not as much as we might think.

Some symptoms experienced in ageing may be loss of strength for instance, grip strength when opening a jar or not being able to lift as much as before. Other signs of ageing include becoming tired more easily with exertion, loss of balance or feeling stiff and inflexible. Many of us accept this as an inevitable part of getting old and many studies of of older people show signs of muscle loss and all of the symptoms above, but why? Muscle Bound or Chair Bound More and more research is showing that it is more a case of use or lose it than an inevitable deterioration. Many studies have shown that our muscles are capable of gaining strength, size and endurance at

14

any age even into our 80’s and 90’s and if we continue to use our muscles as we age the loss that we once taken forgranted is greatly preventable. Increasing or maintaining muscle strength means that simple things like getting up from a chair are easy and every day tasks are possible without help, like carrying shopping and opening lids! Maintaining muscle also has an impact on gaining weight as muscle is more metabolically active and thefore we burn more calories even when we are doing nothing.

Hop It Balance is something we learn when we are young, think hopping riding a bike or balancing along a wall, but as we age many of us do fewer and fewer activities to keep these skills practised. Activities like yoga or dancing, riding a bike, walking on uneven ground and even simply balancing on one leg reactivate these once

innate skills and are essentail as we age to prevent falls. Bend It, Stretch it Finally, although cartilage and ligaments do stiffen as we get older regular stretching helps to keep them lengthened and flexible. Sitting for long periods shortens the muscles at the front of the hips and thighs and this shortening can lead to poor posture and lower back pain. Taking a leaf out of Bruce Forsyth’s book and doing some gentle stretches every morning can prevent strains and pulls. If you are doing nothing and feeling a bit stiff and creaky at the moment we don’t recommend hopping around the room like a lunatic but if you would prefer to use it rather than lose it why not get in touch and get some advice about starting. It doesn’t just teach you how to overcome your smoking habit, it teaches you much, much more than that – it teaches you how to Thrive in all aspects of your life. Don’t waste another day, eliminate your smoking habit now and start living the life you want.

Now we are well into the colder months of the year it is important to look at how you are caring for your skin. Protecting the delicate skin of the face and body is key as the elements can cause immediate and long-term damage. Our skin is the biggest organ in our bodies yet can be the most neglected. It is also directly affected by how the other organs are working and nutrition therefore plays a big part in skin health too. During the autumn and winter months especially I personally feel that the most important product you can use for the face is a good moisturizer. Pick one for daytime with a built in SPF, as even during the colder months the skin needs some protection from the sun. Protect your little ones with a free flu vaccine There is good news for parents of young children – this year, the free flu vaccination will be available to more children as the age range is being extended to include seven year olds. This year, all two, three and four year-olds and children in school years one, two and three are being offered the free flu vaccination. Young children are especially vulnerable to getting flu and are also more likely to spread the virus because they generally don’t use tissues properly or wash their hands. Protecting your child can stop flu spreading to other children and others that are vulnerable to flu, such as babies, older

people, pregnant women and people with serious long-term illnesses. For young children, the flu vaccination comes in the form of a simple nasal spray. Not only is it needle-free, this quick and painless spray up each nostril, works even better than the injected flu vaccine. The vaccine is absorbed very quickly and will still work even if, after the vaccination, your child develops a runny nose, sneezes or blows their nose. Children aged two, three and four years can receive their free flu vaccine at their local GP surgery. Children in school years one, two and three will receive the flu vaccine at school.

As well as young children, the flu vaccine is available free of charge to pregnant women, carers, people in long term care facilities, anyone with a long term health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or neurological conditions, and people over 65. If you are in one of these eligible groups, you can receive your free flu vaccine from your GP or local pharmacy. If you aren’t eligible for a free flu jab, you can still receive the vaccination from your local pharmacy for a small fee. Find out more by visiting www. nhs.uk and search for ‘flu vaccine’.

Got a child aged 2, 3 or 4? Flu can be serious for young children. Help protect them from flu with one simple nasal spray. It’s free, fast and painless. Don’t put it off. Take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can.

In the Garden

Your October Garden

With Autumn now here, we have to put summer behind us and, if you haven’t already done so, pull up summer bedding. Although some may still be in flower, you need to get the autumn and spring plants in while the soil is moist, so that they can grow and establish before the soil gets too cold.

Jobs for the garden

• Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders. Leave seedheads for the birds and as much cover as you can for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter. • Leaves need to be cleared so brush or rake them off lawns and paths and put on a compost heap or place in a black bin bag, put a few holes in the bag, tie it up and leave it alone till next year. • Parts of plants that have died back in the borders can be removed, also any debris such as twigs & stones. • Plant foxgloves, hardy heathers, wallflowers, sweet william and polyanthus. Plant spring bedding plants such as winter pansies It’s also a good time to plant shrubs & trees. • Prepare your soil before planting by digging over the soil and removing all weeds, then add some well rotted compost . • Tall growing roses can be cut back to reduce wind-rock. Leave the main pruning until next March.

30

• Lift bulbs & tubers of Gladioli, dahlias & begonias from the ground, dry them and store in a cool, dry place • Prune out the big old shoots & leaves of Helleborus (Lenten Rose) to make room for new growth. • Greenhouse plants watering can now be reduced. Only open vents on warm days and making sure they are closed on nights. Clean & disinfect windows, floor area, benches & shelves.

Plant of the Month Parthenocissus Grown for their amazing coloured leaves, Parthenocissus, are vigorous deciduous climbers with either tendrils or suckers, and lobed or palmate leaves which turn brilliant shades of red in autumn. They will happily cover a north or east facing wall; in sun their colours are less dramatic. Parthenocissus henryana, Chinese Virginia creeper, is the least vigorous growing to 10m, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Virginia Creeper will get to 15m and Parthenocissus tricuspidata ‘Veitchii’, Boston Ivy is the most vigorous, growing to 20m.

It’s the Law

Why you Should WRite a Will While it can be an uncomfortable subject to address, not having a Will can cause many problems and may result in your family having to pay excess inheritance tax.

Reasons to Write a Will 1.

If you die without a Will, your estate will be shared out according to the law instead of your wishes.

2.

If you are separated but still legally married (or in a civil partnership) then your ex-partner can still inherit under the rules of intestacy.

3.

If you are unmarried and living with your partner, they are only entitled to anything you jointly own, such as savings.

4.

If there are children, grandchildren or greatgrandchildren and the estate is worth more than £250,000 then the spouse will receive all the personal possessions, the first £250,000 of the estate and half the remaining estate.

32

5.

Your children will not inherit anything if there’s a surviving partner and the estate is valued at under £250,000.

6.

If the estate is valued over £250,000, the children will inherit one half of the value above £250,000 in equal shares. This also applies where a parent has children from other relationships.

9.

7.

Anything jointly owned will pass to the surviving owner. This can cause issues when couples have purchased a house together and later separated without changing the names on the mortgage, especially if a new partner had subsequently moved in

8.

If both parents die without a Will, the courts

10. If you and your partner die at the same time, then the oldest is assumed to have died first. Legally this means if you are older than your spouse, and you die intestate, your assets pass to them and then immediately on to their family meaning that members of your family could lose out.

will decide who is to look after the children. A trust is set up for the children and the trustees will also be chosen by the courts. If you do not make a Will it could mean your family pay more inheritance tax than they need to. Inheritance Tax is charged at 40% of the value of the estate above the available allowances.

The Big Bang

picture from: 28dayslater.co.uk

With Bonfire Night just around the corner there will be plenty of pops, bangs and explosions to be heard but none so great as that in November 72 years ago at RAF Fauld in Staffordshire

Debris and damage occurred to all property within a circle extending for 1300m. A nearby reservoir containing 450,000 cubic metres of water was obliterated in the incident. Upper Castle Hayes Farm completely disappeared and Messrs Fordes’ lime and gypsum works to the north of the village and Purse cottages were completely demolished. The lime works was destroyed by the destruction of the reservoir dam and the subsequent release of water into the works. Hanbury Fields Farm, Hare Holes Farm and also Croft Farm with adjacent cottages were all extensively damaged. Debris also damaged Hanbury village. Approximately one third of the RAF dump exploded, an area of 65,000 square yards, Damage from earth shock extended as far as Burton upon Trent.

The RAF Fauld explosion was a military accident which occurred at 11:11am on Monday, 27th November 1944 at the RAF Fauld underground munitions storage depot. The RAF Fauld explosion was one of the largest non-nuclear At the time, there was no careful explosions in history and the tally of the number of workers largest to occur on UK soil. at the facility. killed by the explosion. A number of live cattle were removed from the vicinity but were dead the following morning. The cause of the disaster was not made clear at the time. However, there had been staff shortages, a management position that had remained empty for a year, and 189 inexperienced Italian POWs were working in the mines at the time of the accident. In 1974, it was announced that the cause of the explosion was probably a site worker removing a detonator from a live bomb using a brass chisel rather than a wooden batten. An eyewitness testified that he had seen a worker using brass chisels in defiance of the strict regulations in force. A memorial to the lives lost is at The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Lichfield, Staffordshire We are no stranger to explosions here either. Many of us remember the local explosion at Buncefield in Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 11th December 2005 which thankfully had no fatalities. It has been a big shock for him and we would love to see him settled with owners who can make him feel secure and loved again. He would benefit from continuing his training, which he enjoys. Dennis is house-trained, bright and lively and needs plenty of human companionship. He needs to be an only pet and cannot live in Luton.

Some such as, Isaac Rosenberg, Edward Thomas, Charles Sorley and Wilfred Owen died in action, whilst Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves survived but went on to express their emotional distress through poetry. Wilfred Owen is generally accepted as the greatest war poet to have written in the English Language. After being blown up, suffering concussion and being shell-shocked, Owen was sent to a psychiatric hospital in Edinburgh were he met Robert Graves and Siegfried Sassoon who inspired him to develop his poetry further.

By Susan Brookes-Morris As we head towards Armistice Day, it’s a pertinent time to reflect on the work of the ‘War Poets.’ The phrase is generally taken to refer to the 16 men who wrote about their first-hand experiences of the First World War and who are commemorated in a slate memorial at Poets Corner.

Owen was awarded a George Cross in October 1918 having seized a machine gun and shot and captured several Germans, but just a few weeks later, he was killed at Orps. His most famous poem is ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ meaning ‘it is sweet and right’ with the last line going on to mean ‘to die for your country.’ In his poem The Sentry he talks about how one of his sentries was blinded. He said ‘All a poet can do is warn. That is why the true poet must be truthful.’

The 16 are; Richard Aldington, Laurence Binyon, Edmund Blunden, Rupert Brooke, Wilfrid Gibson, Robert Graves, Julian Grenfell, Ivor Gurney, David Jones, Robert Nichols, Wilfred Owen, Herbert Read, Isaac Rosenberg, Siegfried Sassoon, Charles Sorley and Edward Thomas.

Anthologies celebrating the best of the genre often include: Charles Sorley’s ‘When you see millions of the mouthless dead’, Isaac Rosenberg’s ‘Break of Day in the Trenches’, ‘Lights Out’ by Edward Thomas, ‘To his love’ by Ivor Gurney and ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke.

Now often studied as part of the English curriculum, the work of these poets is particularly notable for being violent and realistic and challenging earlier poetry which had a pro-war message. Their work expresses extreme emotions of fear, anger and love.

Whilst not written by one of the commemorated 16, the most quoted poem of this era remains ‘In Flanders Fields’ which was written by former doctor John McCrae during the second battle of Ypres.

The War Poets Association says; ‘the young soldier poets of the First World War established war poetry as a literary genre. Their combined voice has become one of the defining texts of Twentieth Century Europe.’

Many widely renowned British poets also have war poems covering a wide range of conflicts within their collections, including Kipling, Tennyson, Hughes, Larkin and Hardy.
