news News From Kidsout

On the 23rd of April, KidsOut organised for 27 children from refuge and their mums to attend an Eastleigh football match versus the Tranmere Rovers as VIP guests. Treated to lunch at the club house, face painting, their own football kit and special meet sessions with the Eastleigh players, the children came primarily from refuges in the Southampton and Hampshire area. was tasked with escorting a player onto the pitch, and then returned to special seats to watch the game. “The children have all stated that they really enjoyed meeting the players and being able to walk out with them wearing their very own kit,” said Jane, a local refuge worker. “They loved the stadium and food, and described the day in one word: AMAZING!!!!!” The day was part of KidsOut’s Fun Days service, which works to give children living in refuge, who have escaped domestic violence, or those with other disadvantages the opportunity to have fun and remember what it’s like to be children. “My experience with KidsOut is one of great gratitude and positivity,” said Patricia, a refuge worker. “It has been lovely to watch so many of Leighton Buzzard Garden Centre. WI member, Laura Wheeler, was chosen for a ‘make over’. Well done Laura!

In May Leighton Buzzard Riverside WI enjoyed a fascinating make-up demonstration by Jenny and Ruth from Eden Beauty,

the families having fun family time together as l know for many that has been their first time and this was only made possible by Fun Days. The mothers told me they could not believe how fantastic the day was and it was amazing to see their children look so happy; they would never have been able to afford a day like this for their children and are so appreciative.” Based in Leighton Buzzard, KidsOut charity brings fun and happiness to over 50,000 disadvantaged and vulnerable children across the UK each year, and this is largely due to the fantastic support received in the local area. If you are interested in joining the KidsOut Leighton Buzzard Community Committee to help plan events and raise the charity’s profile locally, please contact the Fundraising Team on 01525 243215. Visitors are always very welcome at our Thursday evening meetings. Info from Vivien Tel: 01525 790194.

On one amazing day this July, Milton Keynes will be the setting for a very unique event. In a celebration of Milton Keynes’ people and places, what could be the longest line of super-sized dominoes ever seen will weave across the city taking in in shopping areas, leisure facilities, residential areas, restaurants, bars and boulevards. Dominoes is a one-off event for Milton Keynes, bought to the city by IF: Milton Keynes International Festival (15 - 24 July) and created by international company, Station House Opera. It will take place on Saturday 16 July. Thousands of special blocks will be used to create a moving domino line that runs across 2 kilometres of the city, unfolding over the course of the day. Along the route there will be sculptural features, highlight ‘performances’ or gravity-defying ‘tricks’. This extraordinary event definitely has a unique wow-factor! An international phenomenon, Dominoes has featured in cities across the world including Hel-

sinki, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Rotterdam and Melbourne. How to be part of Dominoes… The Festival is inviting groups, companies and individuals to take part in this unique event and help build the domino line. Participants receive a Dominoes T-shirt and backpack, a packed lunch, drinks and other useful items for the day. There will also be a party at the end of the event day to say thank you and celebrate what has been achieved. www.ifmiltonkeynes.org

partnership with her sister Jo Carter, who owns a successful recruitment company specialising in staff for the advertising, marketing and digital industry. Sarah, a mum of two who lives in Leighton Buzzard, said: “I’ve known the pub for many years, and had both my daughters’ christening parties there, so it was sad to see it fall on hard times. “I drive past it every day and it has always been my dream to bring the place back to life so when the opportunity presented itself I leapt at it, although there was a great deal of work to do to retain its original features as well as bring the facilities up to date.”

Sarah Restores Landmark Several thousand pounds have been spent on the pub’s facelift, Pub To Former Glory A landmark pub in the centre of Heath and Reach has been restored to its former glory, thanks to the vision of a local resident and hospitality entrepreneur. The former Dukes Head, an 18th century, Grade II listed pub opposite The Green, has gone through extensive refurbishment and opened a few weeks ago as The Dukes gastro pub offering freshly-cooked food, real ale and bed and breakfast accommodation. The move is the brainchild of Sarah Smith, who has a 14-year background in hospitality, including a spell as restaurant manager at the Michelinstarred Stonor Arms Hotel near Henley on Thames. The new venture has seen Sarah go into

which includes restoring the open fire, re-equipping the bar and restaurant areas, and refurbishing the six bed and breakfast rooms.

“We set up a Facebook page to ask people what they wanted to see at The Dukes, and as well as some great ideas such as making the pub dog-friendly to accommodate local walkers, people came forward with their photos and memories of the place in its heyday.”

It’s the Law

COPinG ThiS FaTheR’S Day With Father’s Day just round the corner, we have put together some ideas for families who are separated or divorced, which we hope will help to make it a positive experience.

Talk to the other parent If Father’s Day does not fall on your scheduled weekend, see if it is possible to change weekends or swap part or all of Sunday. Try to give plenty of notice so other plans are not made.

Plan ahead Do not leave it until the last minute to decide what you are going to do. Having a plan will help to reduce uncertainty and stress. If you cannot see your children on Father’s Day then try to arrange to phone or Skype them on the day. Then celebrate it when you next see them, perhaps having a special meal.

Talk to the children Once you have agreed on the arrangements for the day, talk to the children about what the plans are. Maybe there

20

are traditions you would like to uphold, such as breakfast pancakes or a game of football at the park and perhaps introduce some new traditions too. Think about what you really enjoy doing with the kids and plan something around that.

Plan something for yourself If you are not able to see your children on the day it is possible that your mind will start thinking about Father’s Days in previous years or imagining what they are up to now. Try to have plans for the day to stop you from dwelling on that. Even just meeting up with a friend for a drink or going to watch a film can give you a lift.

Support for fathers Relate is one of the UK’s largest providers of relationship support. It has a campaign called Being Parents Apart which offers a variety of support for parents

and families at all stages of separation Gingerbread is a longestablished organisation that provides advice and practical help for single parents, with a dedicated dads section on its website. Only Dads is specifically for divorcing or separating fathers. Separateddads has a blog with an ‘Ask the expert’ section and an online directory to help fathers to find further advice and support. Whatever your current circumstances, we hope that you have a Happy Father’s Day.

In the Garden

June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an extra burst of growth. It can be a variable month, with chill nights and rain, but the chances of frost are slim and the garden may never look better; regular upkeep will ensure a long summer of interest.

Your Garden in June

Jobs for the garden

• Hoe borders regularly to keep down the weeds • Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside. Make sure they are well watered preferably using collected rainwater, or recycled grey water whenever possible. • Mow the lawn weekly and apply a selective weed-killer which kill weeds but not the lawn. Be careful if you have wild flowers growing in it as it may mistake them for weeds. • Plant out summer bedding and fill gaps in borders with annuals • Stake tall or floppy plants. Sweet peas can be trained onto their support to create a good display • Prune spring-flowering shrubs and cut back/ clean and divide spring flowering perennials • Check roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other insect or disease problems and if they appear, take steps to control them straight away • Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early

potatoes. Earth up the rest and promptly plant any potatoes still remaining. • Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes and tie in as required • Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

Plant of the Month – Lavender

An easy to grow, evergreen shrub that produces masses of beautifully scented flowers above green or silvery-grey foliage. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens. On heavier soils, like clay, lavender can be fairly short-lived, becoming woody at the base. To prolong its life, add organic matter and gravel to improve the drainage and plant on a mound. If growing as a hedge, plant on a ridge to keep the base of the plants out of wet soil. There are a number of different types of lavender with English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia the hardiest. Its flowers range from white to deep violet. L. Hidcote has a beautiful deep violet-purple flowers growing to about 60cm high, L Munstead, another favourite has highly-fragrant, blue-purple flowers and is only 45cm high. French lavender, Lavandula stoechas and hybrid lavenders are not as hardy and may suffer in severe winters. They are easily recognised by the colourful ear-like tufts topping the flowerheads. They have a long summer flowering period are ideal for containers. All lavenders benefit from annual pruning and you can, of course dry the flower heads and use as a pot pourii.

Midsummer's Day The longest day of the year comes all too soon in my opinion. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again.

Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun - celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the rising of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge.

It's all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August.

Midsummer's Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves.

This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer's Day has become. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs.

Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer's Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING 3D printers are a new generation of machines that can turn a computer design into a real object on your desk. They can make almost everything from plastic toys to metal components , they can also produce clothing, shoes, dental implants and one day soon, body parts. 3D printers are remarkable because they can produce a myriad of things from different materials, all from the same machine. They work by taking a 3D computer image and slicing it into thousands of tiny slices thinner than a human hair. It then extrudes (melts) the raw material and lays these slices down from the bottom up and as the slices stick together they form a 3D object. Why is it important? It quite simply is changing almost every aspect of design prototyping and manufacturing. It is no exaggeration to call it the New Industrial Revolution This all means that probably the most important place for 3D printers is in our schools. Tomorrows employers in any industry to do with design and/or manufacturing inc aerospace, automotive,

34

architects, medicine and even fashion will need students with this experience . 3D PRINT WORLD AYLESBURY run a schools challenge called FORMULA 3D where 12 schools design and 3D print a slot car (think Scalextric) They then race these against 12 schools on a huge 18m digital track. 4 lanes wide with 12 cars, (yes you can now overtake), the prizes include 3D printers. We then encourage local businesses to sponsor their local school and have their logos on the car, track side and on YouTube and all sponsorship goes towards printers for that school. These events can also be put on for PTA groups with money raised supplying Printers for the school. It’s great fun (better than a quiz night). We also, through the charity E-nable, are printing prosthetic limbs for children and helping schools get involved with this. A prosthetic hand for a child can be printed for around £10, that’s life changing.

So is it the next big thing? If you are a designer, engineer or student then yes but for most people maybe not yet. It’s an emerging technology which means, like home computers and mobile phones most people will remain sceptical about needing one until everyone has one and then we’ll all wonder how we ever managed without one. Come and see it in action at our Aylesbury Showroom: 3D Print World Aylesbury 32 Parton Rd, HP20 1NG

If you are a teacher or PTA member and would like to know more about running a FORMULA 3D EVENT for your school contact me: David Dilworth dil@3dprint-world.co.uk 01296 434666 www.3dprintworld-aylesbury. co.uk

BEER AND A BBQ FOR FATHER’S DAY Sunday 19th June Spend time with your dad in a historic wartime setting This year there will be a special Fathers’ Day barbecue at Bletchley Park, complete with the visitor attraction’s very own beer. Created by The Concrete Cow Brewery in Milton Keynes, the beer has been named Station X; one of the terms used to describe Bletchley Park during World War Two. Dads and their families can enjoy the traditional barbecue with burgers and hot dogs plus a vegetarian option whilst listen to the vintage sound of The Bevin Boys. The swing band plays vocal led jazz standards and other hits from the 1940s. Anyone wishing to enjoy the Father’s Day barbecue should enter through admissions as usual then head to one of the food outlets on site to buy a barbecue voucher.

The barbecue will be on the main lawn where the Codebreakers spent their free moments during the war so families can relax in these historic and picturesque surroundings. Food will be served between midday and 2pm. Station X beer will also be sold in the Hut 4 Restaurant and the shop. 11-19 June is National Picnic Week By Susan Brookes-Morris

The weather’s warming up, so why not get outside and go for a picnic? 11-19 June is National Picnic Week a celebration of picnicking that’s been happening in the UK for over a decade. Some see picnics as a romantic affair to be shared with a loved one, fine foods and a bottle of champagne. For others it’s an inexpensive family day out and often a reminder of childhood days. Or it could be a chance to spend time with friends, choosing to meet at a given location and each bringing along their favourite food and drinks to share. The Oxford Dictionary describes a picnic as ‘an occasion when a packed meal is eaten outdoors, especially during an outing to the countryside.’

42

Whilst many do choose a countryside spot for their picnic there are many other options including local parks, the grounds of stately homes, the seaside and riverside settings. You can find recommendations for places to enjoy your picnic on the National Picnic Week website: www.nationalpicnicweek.co.uk For many people a picnic consists of traditional items such as sandwiches, crisps, boiled eggs and cakes or fruit. Research shows however that Mediterranean options such as deli-style meats, olives, humus and crackers are also now commonly included and some choose to create items from special picnic recipe books. One of the tricks of picnicking successfully is packaging items correctly to ensure food is not squashed beyond recognition

and drinks don’t leak. Carrying your picnic on a bike ride can create extra difficulties but add to the fun. Utilise specialist plastic containers, cling film, foil and sandwich bags, or buy items pre-packed. You could even splash out on a traditional picnic hamper. You can now buy a wide range of stylish brightly coloured plastic plates, cutlery and cups to enhance your experience. It’s a good idea to remember to take napkins or kitchen roll and some wet wipes, as eating a picnic can get a little messy, particularly if you are sat on a picnic rug rather than at a table. Do take some bags for your rubbish too; never leave litter behind. It’s not just about the food and drink. Most picnics include some form of group exercise such as a walk, cycle, swim or game of rounders, in addition to a good laugh and a chat. This makes picnics a stressbusting, healthy activity. And if the weather isn’t kind you can still create a picnic atmosphere indoors. You could even try a ‘carpet picnic’ at home. Kids love them!
