Bee Local Magazine is your local magazine for Leighton Buzzard and the surrounding villages.

Hello Again Is it a relief? Will you miss them or are you breathing a sigh of relief as you pack the little, or not so little ones off to school? The uniforms are bought, the names are all ironed in (or glued if you are my kind of domestic goddess) and perhaps you have a moment for you at last. Time to make a plan! Which brings me to one of my favourite things, new stationery! Who can make a plan without a lovely new organiser? If you are a woman (or man) after my own heart then page 27 is just for you. If packing them off to school is not such a happy time then read page 26 for some tips and help for school anxieties.

Valerie kindly pointed out my latest recipe faux pas. I hope none of you went out to pick-your-own fields with the intent of finding 300 strawberries! It should have read 300g of course! The recipe in this edition was taken from a 1959 cookery book and so I needed to translate Editor: the measurements into metric! Andrena Carden-White What can possibly go wrong with that! Do let me know how it turns out and if you have Advertising: buzz@beelocalmagazine.co.uk a spare jar you know where to find me, yum. Telephone: 01525 222473 Bee Local Magazine is delivered by

KidsOut’s inaugural Family Fun Day and Supermarket Football Match was a huge success, raising over £1,000 for local disadvantaged children. Taking place on 14th August at Leighton Town FC, the day centred around a ‘Battle of the Supermarkets’ football match, as Morrisons and Tesco’s Leighton Buzzard stores took each other on in a 90 minute football match. The day was all in aid of KidsOut – the national fun and happiness charity for disadvantaged children, whose head office is in Leighton Buzzard town centre. From 3-5pm KidsOut laid on family activities and games including a bouncy castle, tombola, Frisbee Golf, as well

nesses; a £60 Pizza Express voucher, a Marshall Amplification goodie bag, a fabulous Tesco v Morrisons cake made by LinziMarie’s Cake Supplies, £80 photography gift voucher for SF Digital Studios, a spray tan at Bare Essentials and many more – huge thanks to all generous donors. The football match kicked off at 5pm, but not before the players took part in a

Jazzercise warm up run by Keri Donnellan. With referee Chris O’Donnell overseeing proceedings with linesmen Dean Carney and Elliott Wright, the first goal was scored by Tesco at 30 minutes in. Morrisons fought back but

it was not enough, with Tesco triumphant in the end 3 – 1. Charlie Furlong, Tesco Grocery Manager who organised their team, said: “It was amazing to see so many different parts of the community come together for a great cause, not to mention both teams had great fun in the process.” Katharine Smith, Community Champion at Morrisons Leighton Buzzard agreed, saying: "It's been great fun helping to organise the charity football match. I would like to thank everyone for all their support leading up to the event and on the day. I was so pleased how well natured it was despite playing against our rival supermarket. Special thanks to the Morrisons footballers; we may have lost the match but we have helped raised over £1,000 for KidsOut" Local band Blues Before Midnight treated guests to a great performance after the match, with the final spectators leaving well after dark. Equally as important as fundraising, the event enabled KidsOut to reach a new audience of people in the local community. This event would not have been possible without the amazing support from all volunteers – special thanks in particular go to Katharine Smith from Morrisons and Charlie Furlong from Tesco. KidsOut would also like to thank all local businesses who donated prizes, Blues

More successful fundraising not to mention a lot of fun was to be had at the Leighton Buzzard canal festival in July as volunteers from LB Connect business networking group joined KidsOut on their tombola and hook a duck stall. The day raised in the region of £600 to help local disadvanted children. KidsOut’s next local fundraising event is a Question of Trivia Quiz Night on 16th September at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club. It costs just £15 per person, including games package and delicious supper. For more information on KidsOut or any of our events, please email info@kidsout.org.uk or call 01525 385252. See page 38 for details.

Anyone who has been to their local supermarket in the last couple of weeks will have noticed we are undergoing a huge refurbishment here in Leighton Buzzard. The chaos will be worth it with wider, brighter aisles, build your own pizza and a great selection of children’s clothes from Nutmeg not to mention our new look customer cafe.

July and August have been very busy for us. We are very proud of the Morrisons’ men who took part in August’s charity football match, they trained hard for the event and we are already planning the come-back! Best of all it raised over £1000 for KidsOut.

even more children and tackle illiteracy in a new area. Our volunteers are invaluable to our organisation and we’re hopeful that we will build a strong network in the area’. You can find out more about Beanstalk and how to get involved with their cause at www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk or call 01604 720969.

Rugby Heritage Children’s literacy charity Beanstalk, who has already been working in primary schools across Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes, will be moving into Leighton Buzzard in the next school year. Sadly nationally 11% of children are leaving primary school unable to read well. Beanstalk, which has been supporting children for over 40 years, aims to rewrite this story through providing dedicated one-to-one support to children in local primary schools. This is done through recruiting and training reading helpers, with each providing 2 sessions of support per week to the same children for a full year. This provides much needed consistency and support to those children who need it most. Charity Representative, Rebecca Carter, said: ‘This is a great opportunity for Beanstalk and we are really excited to be able to support

news Colour Rush Returns After Sell Out Year

Colourful fun for all the family

Following g a very successful event last year, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) is once more hosting the family favourite Colour Rush, a colourful 5km run, jog or walk – with a ‘MiniRush’ for kids – on Sunday 9th October, at ALF Green Park, Aston Clinton. This year’s runs are taking place at both 11am AND 2pm! Every kilometre there is a colour station where the runners get showered with multi-coloured powder so everyone becomes a rainbow by the finish! The event has proven to be a hit with families looking for a fun day out. “It is a brilliantly organised, family fun way to raise money for such a worthwhile cause,” said previous participant and mum of two, Caroline Gearing. “Colour in the sun, what an awesome day for children and adults alike!” Organisers highlight that the Colour Rush plays a vital role in supporting

10

Hospice services. Fundraising Manager Frankie Hockham comments, “Without events such as the Colour Rush and the wonderful support from our volunteers and participants, we would not be able to ensure the continued funding of in-patient and at-home palliative care services for patients battling life-limiting illness.” You can register to take part for £25 per adult, £12 per child over 5 years and £2.50 for children under 5. There is also a special group rate: register 10 people for £225, plus a family of four can register for £65. Each participant will receive a Runners Pack, which includes a white t-shirt, bag of coloured powder and neon sunglasses to wear on the day. Money raised from the event will support the funding of local palliative care services at Florence Nightingale Hospice.

In a Galaxy Far, Far Away... well Northampton!

In its second year, Northampton Comic-Con is an annual event which is

held at the Northants County Cricket Ground. A gathering of stars from TV and screen such as: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and

The Avengers just to name a few. There is also: comic book artists, memorabilia and an after show party promising mingling with actors and live bands. However, this year, instead of being just another face amongst the crowd, poet James McInerney will be meeting fans and signing his books all weekend. James says he is “both honoured and excited to be attending the event - It’s not every day you see a poet at ComicCon”

James who released his second book ‘Bloom’ in June this year, has already had an amazing career in poetry. His debut book, ‘In between the lines’, which came out in 2012 was an instant hit. Growing up in an area in Northampton aptly named ‘Poets Corner’, James’ works have been attracting a lot of attention If you want to meet James, he will be at Northampton Comic-Con on 24th –25th September from 9am-5pm. Tickets for the event can be purchased on Skiddle or on the door on the day. His official website is jamesmcinerney.wix.com/poetry.

Health & Fitness sponsered by All About Me Fitness

by Andy Plant

W

ith the kids heading back to school, your thoughts might turn to spending time for you and getting back on the fitness bandwagon. But you may have doubts, you may have tried and struggled to really get results before. So what could you do different this time that’ll really help push you over the top? Well here’s a little secret the NUMBER 1 tool to really get you results! It’s not your fitness program it’s not even your diet plan… It’s a little thing called adherence.

Adherence simply means STICKING TO IT! Your journey might not be easy, there are going to be times where you want to give up. You will more than likely have issues in the time it takes to notice the results you may crave those things that you know are bad for you. It is so easy to find an excuse not to diet, but if you really want those results and I mean REALLY want results then you will have to master the art of adherence. Sticking to it when the going gets tough.

14

So how do we improve your adherence? • The use of specific goals, having something to work to and achieve can massively improve your motivation. The more motivated you are, the more likely you are to succeed. • Dealing with perceived barriers before they become an issue. Before you start on your journey write down everything that could become a physical barrier such as time, work or kids. Try to action plan around these and they will be less of a problem in the long run. • • Have fun! Put yourself in an environment you enjoy, weight loss can a tough journey at times so you should train in a place you feel comfortable. Sometimes group fitness is a great way to achieve this as you work with like-minded people and a good trainer will encourage interaction and enjoyment.

• Get a coach. This is someone who can inspire you to stay on the straight and narrow, someone you feel comfortable enough to talk to and share your problems with as they arise. These tactics can really help when the going gets tough, try to also surround yourself with people who have a positive influence on your life. People’s negativity can really get to you and push you away from where you want to get. Just remember results might take a while to manifest themselves but if you really adhere to your program then you have every chance of success!!! A Two Day Kitchen Makeover

T

he kitchen is the heart of every home, from the chaos of getting the children off to school, the grabbed coffee before work, preparing the Sunday roast with family and friends gathered round or maybe a quiet moment to yourself with a cup of tea. Did you know the average UK household spend about 6 hours cooking a week? That doesn’t include eating, chats over coffee, using the kitchen table as an office and all of the other time we spend in the hub of our house. Is it any wonder that so many of us spend time dreaming of our perfect kitchen? A new kitchen is also said to add between 2-5% to the value of your home but with new kitchens costing between £5,000 and £8,000+ at the budget end and £10,000+ for a bespoke solution, you may

20

need to re-mortgage just to afford one. Not to mention living off take-aways for weeks, or every meal with your parents, the dust, noise and disruption of the builders. Fortunately a new and growing trend is to avoid the mess, disruption and huge costs by having a kitchen makeover and it is not hard to understand why. Most kitchens have already maximised the space available and all that is needed is a facelift. Replacement kitchen doors and perhaps a new sink and worktops can transform a kitchen in 1-2 days. Imagine staying away for a day and arriving back to a completely tranformed kitchen. The beauty of using a professional company such as Dream Doors is that everything will be properly fitted for you and tidied up

afterwards without a huge upheaval and overnight you have increased the value of your home and saved yourself £1000’s off the cost of a new kitchen, can’t be bad! Okay if you wanted the new sink and worktops it might be two nights. The other beauty of a makeover is that you can go a little wild knowing that when trends change you can change too. So if you fancied metallic blue doors or a vibrant orange release your inner desires knowing that in 5 years you can change again without the huge cost or ripping out the entire kitchen and starting again. If you are looking at a makeover purely to increase the value of your home for sale then pick a neutral colour and use less expensive accessories to bring the look together. The fashion is for high gloss finish and if you look around any show home at the moment there are reflective surfaces everywhere so steal their ideas and go light, bright and shiny to increase your chances of a quick sale. For ideas and inspiration why not speak to Mark Stephen at Dream Doors South Beds Tel: 01525 888026. See their advert on page 3 for more details and great before and after pictures.

In Your Mind sponsored by Garry Higgins

Emetophobia – is this the worst phobia to have? Emetophobia (fear of vomiting or sick) is probably the worst phobia to have. Why is that? Well, most other phobias can be avoided. If you are scared of flying you don’t have to fly, if you are scared of escalators or lifts you can take the stairs. Unfortunately if you have Emetophobia you never know when you might be exposed to someone being sick, hear someone vomiting, or be exposed to germs that could cause you to be ill and make you vomit. The scenarios are endless and it is exhausting to be constantly worrying about or trying to avoid these situations. Emetophobia is a severe condition that stops people living a normal life and massively affects the lives of people around them. Some sufferers have refused chemotherapy and even decided not to have children because the thought that they might be sick was too terrifying to contemplate.

Profile of an Emetophobia sufferer

Emetophobia often starts in childhood and sufferers are usually female, but men

22

can also be affected. They are usually intelligent, well presented, below average weight, they:• rarely eat out in restaurants and avoid chicken, spicy or unusual food, • don’t drink or they restrict alcohol intake, avoiding pubs & clubs where others may drink heavily, • dislike dinner parties, weddings, social events and crowded rooms which can lead to anxiety or panic attacks, • avoid flying or travelling by boat and public transport, preferring to travel by car and driving themselves. Sometimes as a parent the first clue you might get that your child has a problem is noticing that they don’t want to go to school or they are becoming more anxious and worried about things, focusing on hygiene and avoiding germs or possibly showing some OCD symptoms.

feel in control. As a result they will have high social anxiety and will often suffer from low self esteem. They tend to brood on things and have a negative view of their ability to overcome emetophobia, they will often have a black and white style of thinking, be very perfectionist and catastrophic in their thinking.

How can The Thrive Programme help?

Thrive is a scientific, researchbacked training programme that teaches you how to completely re-wire how you think, feel and behave. It doesn’t just teach you how to overcome your fear of being sick, it teaches you much, much more than that – it teaches you how to Thrive. Don’t waste another day, eliminate your emetophobia and start living the life you want now.

Back to School Fears by Kate Duggan

While many children run through the classroom door each day, with barely a backwards glance, others, sadly, do not find the school experience such a happy one. The occasional grumble is rarely anything to worry about, but if your child frequently seems unhappy, you may need to intervene. Early intervention can help to avoid long-term issues, and your child is more likely to develop a love of learning if they enjoy the whole school experience. There are a range of reasons your child may dread going to school, from bullying, to being shy or particularly sensitive to noisy situations. They may simply not like their teacher, or struggle with being separated from you. Try to figure out exactly what’s bothering your child, and if there’s anything you can easily do to fix it. Would arranging some play dates help them to make friends? Could changing to packed lunches ease their dread of dinner time? Do they need more quality one-on-one time with you, to help them feel more secure when you’re not together?

teacher, and, if needs be, the headteacher. They will be well used to dealing with a wide range of issues, from bullying to a lack of confidence, and should work with you to ease any problems. Do speak to your child about this first however, as you going into school could be exactly what they’re dreading and may make them clam up next time there’s a problem. The website www.bullying.co.uk has a wealth of advice for parents whose child is being bullied, and the charity, Family Lives offers a free, confidential helpline for parents on all aspects of raising a child, including issues with school. Call 0808 800 2222 or visit the website: www.familylives.org.uk for more information.

It isn’t always easy to get to the bottom of a child’s reluctance to walk through the school gates. Sometimes they can’t explain what it is that makes them scared. Raise the subject when they’re feeling relaxed and up for talking, ie not right after school, when they’re tired, or when they want to just go and play. If your child is older, they may find it easier to open up to another family member or family friend, who isn’t involved in making them go to the place they dread every day. Once you have a better idea of what the problem is, book a time to speak to your child’s

I love stationery

One of the best things about going back to school was the brand new stationery, maybe a new planner a new pencil case and pristine exercise books in which you were only going to do your best writing. For me nothing has changed I love new stationery.

Perhaps as your children head back to school you have promised to yourself to get more organised, make an exciting new plan or even start a course. What better excuse to buy a lovely new organiser than now, in fact, in my opinion, you can’t really start without one! There has been a resurgence of notebooks, planners and organisers that hasn’t been seen since the days of the filofax for those of you who remember them. Despite our online world it seems there is still a desire for sitting down with paper and pen. Here is my selection of great places to buy online but don’t forget our High Street, Room No 9 and Metalyka both have notebooks and many of our card and gift shops are worth a peek.

busyb.co.uk Is planning and organising heaven, from the Oh So Clever range, monthly organiser with pockets (pictured) to gardening planners, receipt organisers as well as the traditional organisers and notebooks. The also stock other fantastic accessories you didn’t even know you needed.

dodopad.co.uk I can’t do a piece on stationery without mentioning my beloved DoDo Diary. Not just a diary but a little bit of entertainment everyday. Cleverly organised with a page per day and columns that can be labelled with family members or projects, plus doodle space, silly facts and more. I have never found them particularly attractive but this is made up for by the range of leather slip covers and swarovski crystal pens, inserts and accessories.Visit DoDo Towers on their site and explore the maze - Madness!

stickerstack.co.uk In case you missed it there is a huge trend for Asian and Korean stationery and stickers. Stickers are no longer just for children and they can enhance your diary or, planner in their words “We also believe that it’s worth taking time to craft meaningful and enduring messages, and we provide you with the tools to do exactly that”. I liked this keyboard shaped weekly planner and of course the stickers to bring each entry to life!

DONT WAIT UNTIL WINTER FOR THE FLU JAB Local doctors are urging people in Bedfordshire to have the flu jab well before winter, and say it is especially important for those at risk of more serious health complications and even death from flu. DO YOU NEED FINANCIAL ADVICE?

The flu vaccine is available from the NHS free of charge to pregnant women, young children, carers, people in long term care facilities, anyone with a DO long term health condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or neurological conditions, and people over 65. DO The vaccine is safe and effective, and can reduce the chances of getting flu and its complications by 70 per cent and of death from flu by 80 per cent. Last winter in Bedfordshire over 1,000 people were admitted to hospital because of flu. Public Health teams are especially concerned that the number of pregnant women who had the flu jab last winter fell by 6.7 per cent compared with the previous year, and less than half of two year olds, and adults under 65 who have health conditions had the flu vaccine. Dr Dayo Kuku, Respiratory Clinical Lead for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, and a GP, said: “You can’t get flu from the jab. The vaccine stimulates your body’s immune system to make antibodies which attack the flu virus. The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu – so even if you had a jab last winter, you need another one this year to stay safe. If you are eligible for the free flu jab, you can get it from your GP or local pharmacy. If you aren’t eligible for a free flu jab, you can still receive the vaccination from your local pharmacy for a small fee.Find out more by visiting www.nhs.uk and search for ‘flu vaccine’.

In the Garden

Your September Garden

This is the time to enjoy the flowers from late perennials such as sedums, Japanese anemones and asters. You are hopefully busy reaping the rewards of your harvest from your fruit or vegetable patch. It’s also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!

Jobs for the garden

• Lift and divide congested clumps of herbaceous perennials. • Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and daffodils • Mow the lawn, rake and mow again. Aerate with a machine if you can. Mend broken edges and reseed bald patches. Dose with low-nitrogen feed, then top-dress. • Remove spent summer annuals and replace with spring bedding wallflowers and winter pansies. • Prune and remove the last of the rose flowers. Prune climbing roses when they’ve finished flowering, removing dead, damaged and diseased stems. • Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway. • Carry out autumn lawn maintenance, including aerating, scarifying, top dressing and feeding. Reseed bare patches, and create new

30

lawn from seed. • Harvest sweetcorn when the tassels turn brown. Dig up remaining maincrop potatoes. Store in a hessian sack with some slug pellets. Root vegetables are keep best in sharp sand. • Plant garlic, winter lettuce, turnips, spring cabbages and autumn onion sets in the vegetable garden. • Begin moving tender plants into sheltered positions or into the greenhouse or conservatory.

Plant of the Month Anemone Japonica Keep life and light in the garden for the darkening nights of autumn with the Japanese Anemone. As the summer garden plants wind down, the Japanese Anemone blooms reliably from August through October, in sun or shade. Stunning shades of pink and white flowers are produced en masse. Growing to around 90-120cm, this perennial is ideal for the middle or back of border show where it will serve as a long-lasting addition to the summer border plants. Favourite varieties include Queen Charlotte (pink), Honorine Jobert (white) and September Charm (rosy pink) and ‘Pamina’ (double pink pictured)

It’s the Law

ProTecT your comPensaTIon and beneFITs WITh a Personal Injury TrusT

What are the benefits of a PI Trust?

Many people assume that a personal injury claim ends when the compensation is awarded.

The main benefit is that the trust fund is ignored when calculating your entitlement to benefits.

However, deciding what to do with the pay-out is an important, and often daunting, decision.

When should I set up my Personal Injury Trust?

To protect your award and ensure your eligibility to both current and future state benefits and assistance is not affected, you may choose to set up a Personal Injury Trust (also called a PI Trust).

What is a Personal Injury Trust? A Personal Injury Trust is a trust fund for people who have received compensation following a personal injury. They are sometimes referred to as a special needs trust or compensation protection trust.

32

It is advisable to set up your trust as soon as possible, ideally before any personal injury compensation payment (either interim or final settlement) has been received. However, you usually have up to 52 weeks, from when you first receive either an interim or final settlement pay-out, to place the funds into a PI Trust before your benefits are affected.

What about trustees? You normally need to have two people acting as trustees, both

over the age of 18. Although it is possible for you to be one of them, it is not advisable. A member of our team can also be one of your trustees. You have the power to change your trustees at any time.

What can I do with my money in a PI Trust Fund? You can use the money how you wish. There used to be restrictions on what the funds could be used for, but this is no longer the case.

What about tax? There are no particular income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax advantages of personal injury trusts and any income generated by, or capital released from, the fund would be taxed in the normal way.

Studies on Langholm Moor showed that when gamekeepers started predator control and

diversionary feeding for birds of prey, the number of hen harriers rose from 2 pairs to 21 pairs. However when the management stopped, the hen harrier population plummeted to 2 pairs. Without gamekeepers, the number of foxes, carrion crows and other generalist predators increased significantly. To remain at high density the hen harriers needed the gamekeeper just as much as the grouse. The Angus Glens have their fair share of birds of prey. There are two sea eagle nests on this estate and all four chicks that hatched in the spring have survived this has been helped by the abundance of food for eagles on the moor particularly mountain hares which the League Against Cruel Sports oddly claims are at risk of extinction. Tomato & Apple Chutney

September is a lovely time of year and even the smallest garden apple tree seems to produce an abundant crop but what to do with all those apples! If you are not fortunate enough to have a greenhouse you may also find yourself with a crop of unripened tomatoes. Here is a perfect recipe to use both. This comes from a Good Housekeeping cookery book printed in 1959 and so the measurements are in “old money”. I have done my best to convert them all but for some readers I am sure the old ways are still the best. Ingredients 4lbs (1.8kg) unripened tomatoes 2lbs (907g) apples 1lb (453g) onions 0.5oz (14g) bruised root ginger 1.5lb sultanas or chopped figs 0.25lb (113g) sugar quarter tsp cayenne pepper 1oz (28g) salt 1oz (28g) garlic finely chopped 1 quart (2 pints or 1.186 litres) vinegar Method Slice and chop the tomatoes, peel and core the apples, and cut in thick slices; chop the onions. Tie the ginger in muslin. Put all the ingredients in a saucepan, bring to the boil, and simmer gently until the vegetables are tender and the chutney of the desired consistency. Remove the ginger. Pot and cover. Tips A good chutney should be smooth to the palate, with a mellow flavour. Two points to remember are 1. Slice or mince the ingredients finely and 2. Allow long, slow cooking. This softens the fruit and blends he flavours. Cooking should be continued until the chutney is of a jam-like consistency. Salt and seasoning can be adjusted for taste. Remember to start saving jars for storage.
