Hello to Mrs Cook from Woburn who rang about the lemon tart recipe from the garden edition and sorry to anyone else who ended up with huge amounts of lemon filling.

A little self-indulgence ... This is my Grandmother Carrie who was 100 on 14th June an amazing lady who started the Arts & Crafts Shop in Edlesborough in 1965 and worked there until she was 92. She also co-wrote “The Romance of Edlesborough”, recorded an album and wrote many poetry books. Recently she proudly told me she still remembers her first telephone number, it was 5!

It is a longer break between editions so I will see you again in September, have a wonderful summer. Andrena

Ten Bands in Two Days

Swan Fest August 27th and 28th 2016

10 Bands in 2 days in aid of Alzheimer’s Research On the bank holiday weekend at the end of August, The Swan Stewkley are pleased to announce they will be hosting their annual summertime fundraiser event, Swan Fest 2016 in support of Alzheimer’s Research. After the success of last year’s Great Stewkley Bake Off which raised an amazing

£2400 for SSNAP (Support for the sick newborn and their parents), this year’s event takes up the mantra to bring together people from Stewkley and the surrounding region for fun and festivity in the award winning Swan pub garden. Swan Fest will feature 10 fabulous bands with music ranging from the awesome rock of Kings & Thieves, Isabelle and Vintage Black, to the authentic Red Hot Chili Pepper cover band Midnight Jungle, the eclectic Inlak’esh, and the charming sounds of Palmerston and GXDS. Playing atop a Strawberry Fieldz 10 by 6 metre raised festival style stage, local bands from Stewkley, Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard will be joined by acts from London and further afield to entertain the Swan Fest crowds from lunchtime through until late on both Saturday and Sunday night. Food will be plentiful throughout the day with Terry’s of Swanbourne providing Hog Roasts and The Swan Head Chef on hand to manage our barbeque and restaurant service. A summertime pub festival would not be complete without some great real ales and Swan Fest will host a real ale tent providing festival goers with the opportunity to taste a wide variety from the likes of Leighton Buzzard and Tring breweries.

TWG on the TOWN Leighton Linslade Town’s Womens Guild had an awayday recently, to Stratford upon Avon. Members enjoyed exploring the birthplace of poet and playwright, William Shakespeare. The sun shone all day. There was plenty to see, including Shakespeare’s cottage and Holy Trinity Church, where he was baptised and buried. A leisurely cruise on the canal and river was a must, as was a large ice cream, before boarding the coach for our journey home. A small group is pictured in front of Shakespeare s cottage. Our next meeting is on Monday 4th July, at Mentmore Road Park Pavilion. Sheila Foster is giving a talk on Bletchley Park. Meeting starts at 2.15 pm and visitors are most welcome.

Paul Bowen-James of Leighton Buzzard will receive a British Empire Medal for his work in setting up and running Kids in Action Charity which supports children and adults with special needs. Since its inception in 1996 Paul and his team have worked tirelessly to grow the charity from a community centre one night a week, to a 3000sq ft unit in Tavistock Street, Dunstable which hosts daily, weekly and school holiday clubs. Kids in Action also offers subsidised holidays for families at its 3 caravans in Caister, Norfolk. Paul told us “It is such a pleasure to run, I am a lucky man. This is a vision I had 20 years ago and it has now become my career, it is a real honour. To get this award is fabulous, I just cant express the words and it is brilliant for the team here because I cant do this job without the people behind me” If you would like any further information about the charity please visit www. kidsinaction.org.uk or call us on 01582 477762.

L.B. FIRST NEWS! As a local, voluntary, notfor-profit, community group we are established to help promote our town and encourage people to shop locally to help support the local economy to maintain a vibrant, sustainable and welcoming town centre for all. To support this aim we are asking people to write or email Central Beds Council objecting to the planning application CB/16/00814/ OUT for the proposed out of town retail park. If granted this poses a huge threat to our town centre as well as causes a traffic nightmare on the already busy Grovebury Road. This limited land should be kept to provide units for firms looking to move to the area due to the opening of the M1/A5 link road thus creating more jobs. Conversely we want people to contact their local councillors and ask for more of the land on Duncombe Drive (known as South Side of the High Street) to be developed for retail, in particular shops we are lacking such as mid range clothing for men, women and children rather than proposed by Central Beds Council which is more housing,a hotel and a commercial developments. NEWS FROM KIDSOUT Fundraising Madness A Record Breaking Day Out

Team Aubergine started the ‎ToughMudder training ahead of their entry on the 25th September Mark Tomkins of Aubergine, a media and marketing company based in Leighton Buzzard, said “we wanted to do the challenge in support of our lovely local charity friends KidsOut and the good work they do to help all those little ones locally and across the country who have a tough break in life. “ They didn’t pick an easy challenge; a 12 mile run, 28 obstacles that include ice, electricity to name a few. If you'd like to support this cause anything they raise will go directly to the kids. Over 29,000 disadvantaged children across the UK enjoyed a magical day out on 8th June 2016, organised by Rotary and Leighton Buzzard’s own KidsOut. Curry and Quiz night

Local businesses gathered at the Lime Tree restaurant in North Street on the 14th June for a quiz and curry night. Chairman of KidsOut, Gordon Mould acted as quizmaster whilst Cllr Alan Bradnam took charge of the raffle. In total £500 was raised for the charity on the night. In thanking everyone who came Gordon assured us that money raised locally will be used by KidsOut to help local disadvantaged children.

In Your Mind sponsored by Garry Higgins

Fly Happy!

With the summer holidays approaching many of us are thinking about getting away to an exotic holiday destination for some well earned rest and relaxation. The only problem is that we usually need to travel by plane to get there and if you have a fear of flying, relaxed is the last thing you will be feeling. Like many other phobia’s the stress and anxiety you feel is unintentionally created by you! That sounds a bit strange doesn’t it, but the good news is that when you understand how you think and what makes you tick you can train your mind to work for you and get rid of this fear as well as many other limiting beliefs that you might have.

How do we get a fear of flying? Maybe you had a bad time on a flight and processed the whole experience of flying as scary, but this is very rare,

most people have never had a traumatic flight and sometimes they have never been on a plane! So why do some people develop a fear and others don’t? It’s all to do with how you think and process experiences. We see the world from our own unique perspective and through our own belief systems. If you believe that flying is scary you will notice things that confirm this belief, but tend to ignore anything that doesn’t support this belief. People with a flying phobia feel powerless to control anything in this particular situation, but have a huge desire to be in control. They feel that an uncontrollable panic is happening to them and feel helpless about their ability to cope or tolerate those feelings. They then think and imagine things in a very negative, catastrophic way.

The Build up!

You start to imagine the worst about two weeks or a month before the flight. All sorts of horrible thoughts about turbulent flights, engine failure etc. seem to creep in to your head. You imagine the worst possible flight ever so no wonder you are a nervous wreck by the time you get on the plane! Stop! None of this is real it is just your imagination and once you learn how to control this you can start to get perspective on your problem and learn how to beat it.

Take Off!

Would you like to really look forward to your holidays this year without being terrified of getting on a plane? The Thrive Programme will help you get you over your fear of flying, so don’t wind yourself up in to a nervous wreck this year, contact me now and learn how to Fly Happy instead!

As your holiday gets closer you start to get really scared!

Make this Summer a real

W

ith summer holidays just around the corner, life can get pretty hectic. With bbq’s, summer parties, trips to the beach and various other holidays it is easy to see how exercise can be left on the back burner until September rolls around. So is it possible to blend all this in and still keep in shape? Welcome to the world of HIIT training! Before you point out the obvious spelling mistake, HIIT actually stands for High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT workouts involve alternating between very intense bouts of exercise and low intensity exercise. For example, sprinting for 30 seconds, and then walking for 60 seconds.

popularity of the Body Coach and his online coaching.

Why HIIT?

• Cardio based HIIT workouts really utilise bodyweight training to full effect, meaning no need to spend out on or lug around heavy equipment. • You can perform a full workout in as little as 20 minutes, meaning you can fit it into your busy holiday schedule. • You don’t need masses of space. HIIT workouts can be done in just a small room like a hotel room. • It increases your metabolism. A HIIT workout results in EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) also known as after-burn. This result means the body is actively trying to replace the oxygen needed to function your muscle, this can directly increase your metabolic rate meaning you’re burning fat for longer (sometimes up to a 48 hour period after training).

Why Not Try This Workout.

Here’s a basic starter HIIT workout to get you started. Perform the 4 exercises in intervals of 30 seconds work followed by 30 seconds rest. Repeat for 15 – 20 minutes. • Bodyweight Squats • High Knee Sprints • Knee Raises • Mountain Climbers Check out the videos on our FB page at www.facebook.com/ allaboutmefit for tutorials on how to do these exercises. Finally I’d like to congratulate Alex Turner on winning the Personal Training prize in the Easter issue of Bee Local. Alex Started her training plan in June and you can follow her story on our Facebook Page: Facebook/Allaboutmefit

It’s the Law

HelpInG YoU THroUGH DIvorCe While working through relationship issues can solve marital difficulties, in some cases the breakdown of the marriage is so irretrievable that divorce is the only option. You will need to prove that your marriage has broken down when starting to look at divorce proceedings. In this article we explore the five types of ‘facts’ that you can use for legal grounds for divorce.

When Can I Get Divorced? To file or petition for divorce, you and your husband or wife will need to: • have been married for at least a year (two years in Northern Ireland) • have a legally recognised marriage in the UK • show that your relationship has ‘irretrievably’ broken down • meet specific rules about your residency in the country.

22

The five types of ‘facts’ that you can use for divorce:

4. Two Years Separation (with Consent)

1. Adultery

You can get a divorce if you’ve lived separately for more than two years, and both agree (your spouse must agree in writing) to the divorce.

You can use adultery as a reason for divorce. If your spouse won’t admit to adultery, it can be advisable to use ‘unreasonable behaviour’ instead. This can help prevent delays later on.

2. Unreasonable Behaviour If your husband or wife behaves so badly that you can’t carry on living with them, then you can use ‘unreasonable behaviour’ as a reason for divorce.

3. Desertion You can use ‘desertion’ as a reason for divorce if you can prove that your spouse left you more than 2 years ago which ended your relationship without your agreement or without good reason to leave.

You can have lived together for a total of up to six months during this time, if you’ve been apart for two years or more altogether.

5. Five Years Separation (without Consent) If you’ve lived apart for more than five years you can use this as a reason for divorce, without the agreement of your spouse. This is usually enough to be granted a divorce, however your spouse can object if it will cause them ‘extreme’ difficulties (usually financial).

A SHORT STORY SHED The Men’s Dress LIFE Reform Party

Pre World War 1 shorts were seen as the preserve of young boys and indeed it was a rite of passage around the age of puberty to move into long trousers. Post war 1920’s and 30’s emancipated women began to shed their corsets in favour of less restrictive garments which reflected their views of a less restrictive society too, but what of men’s garments.

Led by the founder of the New Health Society, Alfred Charles Jordan The Men’s Dress Reform Party announced their new party at a public address in London: “Men and women, old and young, rich and poor… interested in healthier and better clothes for men and to reform their clothes with as much profit to health and appearance as women have recently achieved” The group wanted to emphasise the need for a better way of dressing, to promote a more free aesthetic where men could experiment with a more casual approach to dressing.

Doing away with stuffy suits, high collars and neck ties the MDRP promoted a way of dressing that On the 12th June 1929 a clothing would shape the future of the subcommittee of the New Health modern man’s wardrobe. Society split away from the group to form their own party, “brighter more hygienic and The Men’s Dress Reform Party picturesque attire” (MDRP). The New Health Society This statement, was advocated had been formed to promote through the MDRP by wearing the overall health of adults and more casual garments, and children. They pushed for more shorts were a major part of this exercise and fresh air, improved new way of dressing as well as diets, and improved conditions “freeing the neck” and preferring in homes and workplaces. received national attention for their recommendations. Members claimed branches were forming in all corners of the world including India, China, Australia, South Africa, the USA, New Zealand and Canada, as well as all over Europe and approximately 200 branches in the UK. These groups held social events, rallies, and debates, but these begin to occur less and less with the onset of World War II. The party was last heard of in 1940 after their office was bombed in London. The MDRP revolutionised the wearing of shorts as every day wear for men.

In the Garden

Your Summer Garden

Now is the time to sit back and enjoy your garden, hopefully in some warm sunshine. While there is still much to do, your main concern will be ensuring plenty of water for your plants. If you are going away over the summer consider some form of irrigation to keep your prized plants going.

Jobs for the garden

• Keep feeding containers and hanging baskets weekly with a liquid feed and dead-head regularly for continuous flowering • Water borders thoroughly and deeply each time to get to the roots - the opposite of little and often applies. • Continue to dead head your perennials and annuals to encourage continued blooming. • Some early-flowering perennials can be encouraged to produce a second, smaller, flush of flowers by cutting the stems right down and applying a liquid feed. • Prune shrubs that have flowered and feed them • Roses need to be sprayed and fertilized each month through the summer. • Continue to feed your lawn, and try to mow it twice a week if you can. If it is hot, don’t cut lawns too short or they may burn.

• Plant leeks and winter brassicas • Plant out successions of salad crops for continued harvesting throughout the summer. Sow seeds for cool-season crops directly into the garden by mid-July.

Plant of the Month – Hemerocallis Also known as the Day lily this plant produces elegant, usually trumpet-like blooms in summer and are easy to grow in many gardens. Individual flowers are short-lived, usually one day, which gives it its common name, but each plant produces many flowers, so displays can last for weeks. Daylilies thrive in well-drained, fertile soil, but tolerate poorer soils and heavy clay. There are thousands of different Hemerocallis varieties some evergreen, others deciduous, ranging in height from 12” to 40”, some scented, triangular, ruffled, flat, spiderlike, double, pinched or recurved – the list is endless. Different varieties bloom at different times during the growing season. The flowers also range in size from tiny 1” blossoms to 8” wide giants. Colours range from white to deep red/purple with masses of mixed colours so something for every garden.

There comes a time in every school holiday when those dreaded words are uttered, “I’m bored”. As parents and grandparents we would be bankrupt if we spend every day coming up with new places to go and new toys to play with so here is a little something to keep them occupied for a couple of minutes at least. If you have more than one child feel free to email me and I will send you printable copies. If your neighbours don’t have children they can cut out this one page and keep the rest of the magazine. CUTTING & STICKING Half the fun is in the cutting and sticking and little ones can manage the

RAINY DAY On a rainy day make a treasure hunt ask the children to draw pictures of lots of flowers, pots of honey or pictures of Herbee and then hide them all around the house. The busy bee needs to buzz around collecting them just like bees collect nectar to make honey. BACK TO THE HIVE For something a little more raucous and better for older children place cushions around the house that are the beehives. These are the safe places for bees to go. You pretend to be the bear trying to get the honey (or siblings can take it in turns) and the the bee has to collect the honey while the bear trys to catch them. This works equally well outside and is less likely to cause damage to the house!

happy buzzing around the garden especially if you can see how many flowers they can visit just like a real bee. PICNIC AND A STORY Why not add a bee theme to an indoor or outdoor picnic? Be sure to include honey sandwiches and this would be a perfect time for a Bee story, Winnie the Pooh is perfect but there are plenty of other great Bee stories out there too. MAKE A BEE Here is a great idea for a finger puppet bee from iheartcraftythings. com but there are plenty of other Bee things to make.

Just Julie home help

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Read this if:

You wonder about your soulmate . Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international best-seller. In 1991 20-year-old Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-year-old Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life; for Henry is not an ordinary man. He was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history. When he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. He begins to travel within her life and their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just 6 years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Written in the first person this novel alternates between Henry and Claire. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.

Strawberry Time

It’s July and that means the soft fruit season, starting, of course, with strawberries. Strawberries seem to be everyone’s favourite. So much so that supermarkets go to great lengths to keep them in stock all year round. That, to my mind, rather spoils things. Some things are meant to be seasonal and strawberries are one of those things. There is great excitement to be had when the first strawberries are ready to be picked.

When you buy a punnet of strawberries you spend a couple of pounds on 500g of large, perfectly shaped fruit that smell gorgeous but may or may not have a flavour to match. Apart from eating them straight from the punnet, perhaps the simplest way to serve these perfect specimens is with a sprinkling of sugar and/or cream. But when you grow your own, or visit a farm to pick your own, you are unlikely to get that many large, perfectly shaped fruit. Instead, you’ll find they’re a variety of different shapes and sizes. This may sound like a disadvantage in comparison to the supermarkets’ perfect

offerings but far from it. Having spent your money on your punnet of perfection, you feel almost obliged to eat them whole and unadulterated. But when faced with a crop of tasty but odd looking berries you won’t think twice about popping them in a blender and making a whole range of delicious strawberry desserts, with strawberry and marshmallow ice-cream being a firm favourite in our house.

to melt them. Stir the mixture, add the cream and whisk so that it thickens slightly. Combine with the strawberry puree, mixing until the mixture is evenly pink. Add the remaining marshmallows, pour into suitable containers and place in the freezer for 3 hours. Remove from the freezer and beat the ice cream to introduce air, to break any ice crystals and to distribute the marshmallows throughout the ice cream then return to the freezer. You can, of course, make strawberry lollies using this mixture too. Don’t bother adding the second half of the marshmallows, but instead pour the liquid into lolly moulds instead of an ice-cream container.

THE GREATEST Muhammad Ali was, for me, the greatest boxer ever, and top sportsman of the 20th C. For Brits, WG Grace, the phenomenal cricketer, could well of have been the 19th C’s greatest sports man. WGG tried all sports, but was a fanatical lawn green bowler. However, the greatest bowler ever has to be the Somerset lad, like me, David J Bryant CBE. You may be aware of DJB and his Flacon pipe (as used by Harold Wilson, Fred Trueman & Stephen Fry). DJB won the first outdoor (1966) and indoor world singles (1979) championships. He also won 5 Commonwealth gold medals, 26 national titles and much more. DJB took bowls to a new level. His contribution to the game of bowls is immeasurable. DJB deserves to be a ‘Sir’ DJB, who is still playing at aged 84, won the Somerset singles at 21, and world titles several times in his 30’s. DJB describes bowls as ‘a young mans game also played by older men (and ladies!)’. As with all sports the best bowlers start young. You will find a warm welcome at your local bowls club in Cheddington, whatever your age and whether you are a beginner or expert. Why not come along and have a go on a Tuesday at 2pm or a Friday at 6pm – its great fun. Or just come and watch on a sunny afternoon. Find our fixtures and location on Cheddingtonbowls.org.uk – take a look. Love Jack
