First things first though, I am so sorry for the missing down crossword clues in the last edition. I did enjoy reading them out to one lovely lady who rang up. I was a bit carried away with adding pretty spring flowers to the page and... well you saw the results. I did publish them on Facebook and the website too but for those of you who are not online I have printed them on the solutions page. Just make sure you have finished the crossword for this edition before you look. I don’t want to spoil your fun any further. Delivered free to 18,000 homes www.beeloca lmagazine.co. uk

We have so many great wedding businesses in the area, I think you will find lots for brides (and grooms) to read as well something for everyone else too. I had some lovely nominations coming in for our Easter competition and by the time this edition lands on your doorstep one special person will have had a delicious surprise. This month you can nominate someone at your workplace or business that deserves a cupcake treat. Enjoy and do keep in touch.

news Wedding Stories La Belle Cake Company’s Award winning cake

Congratulations from Bee Local Magazine to two Leighton Buzzard wedding businesses in town. La Belle Cake Company and Ann’s Bridal Room are both celebrating 10 years in business. Surviving a double dip recession and all the trials and tribulations of self-

employment, is not easy but these two wonderful businesses have not only survived but have earned themselves fantastic reputations. Ann says she she is particularly grateful for the support of her family that helped keep her going. She has marked the 10th year with a brand new website www.annsbridalroom.com and this testimonial says it all “AN AMAZING LADY who helped me find an AMAZING DRESS and gave us an AMAZING EXPERIENCE.”

Fund Raising for Leighton Linslade Cancer Support Leighton Linslade Cancer Support Group will be at Dobbies Garden Centre, Watling The personal thank you letter from Dwight D Eisenhower at the end of World War Two to Sir Stewart Menzies, wartime chief of the Secret Intelligence Service, spent several years hanging on the wall of the top secret office of the Chief of MI6.

EISENHOWER’S THANK YOU LETTER TO BLETCHLEY PARK From a secret spot at MI6 to Bletchley Park The secret letter which confirmed the importance of Bletchley Park’s World War Two intelligence operation has come out of the shadows to go on public display for the first time, at Bletchley Park.

In the letter, dated 12 July 1945, Eisenhower expressed his “heartfelt admiration and sincere thanks”, stating that the intelligence from Bletchley Park had been “of priceless value to me”, had “saved countless British and American lives” and had “contributed to the speed with which the enemy was routed and eventually forced to surrender.” The letter hung in the Chief’s office during the tenure of Sir John Scarlett. He says “I was

As last year was rained off, be optimistic and bring a picnic and the family. proud of this letter, but only came to appreciate the full significance of Eisenhower’s words after taking over as Chairman of the Bletchley Park Trust in 2012.” Today the letter takes pride of place at Bletchley Park, where it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Dr David A Hatch, NSA Historian, explains the letter’s historic significance “Within five years of this letter, Dwight Eisenhower became the first commanding General of NATO and within two years after that, he became the President of the United States. He used intelligence well (and) made improvements. It all traces back to the time of Bletchley Park that this letter represents.”

Other things that you can do to help is to practice - a lot! Write out and practice your speech by speaking it out loud, just as you will do on the day. Look Fit and Fab on your Daughter’s Big Day

Health & Fitness sponsered by All About Me Fitness

by Andy Plant

W

ith wedding season just around the corner, there are brides up and down the country trying to get themselves looking fabulous for the big day and the all-important wedding pictures. But let’s be fair it’s not just the bride that should look fantastic on such a big occasion but you too! So here are our top tips for you to get in shape for your daughter’s wedding day!

Get Active

By this I don’t mean going down the gym all day every day or even going out on long street pounding runs, just be more active in the day. Pick the stairs over the lift, walk to the shops instead of driving, find yourself sitting down too long at work? Stand up and take a walk around the office. Literally every little counts, the more active you are the more calories in a day you will burn.

Be Proactive not Re-active 14

Just ask my clients this has to be my quote of the month, but it is so true! Don’t wait to see how the days pans out to see if you can fit in a walk or a trip to the gym, actively plan it into your day and make sure you stick to it. Don’t think it stops with booking in workouts either, plan out your meal times. Plan what and when you are going to eat, having a structure will allow for fewer slip ups on the way.

Do Some Resistance Exercise

On average a female over 40 loses around half a pound of muscle a year, this in turn means you lose the ability to burn an additional 25 calories a day every year. We can slow this process right down by doing some resistance exercise. Jigging along in Zumba or going out for runs are great for raising heart rates and improving cardio fitness, but to maximise calorie burn you have got to be lifting some weights.

Eat Protein Every Meal

We already know how much muscle we can lose in a year, and protein is the building blocks of muscle! It also keeps you full and cravings down.

Be Consistent

If you make small and consistent changes not only will you start to look better but you will also feel fantastic and what is better on those all-important pictures than a happy smiling face.

Emily Haig ~ Soprano Originally from Whaddon, near Milton Keynes, Emily is a highly accomplished musician, dancer and actress. She began her performing arts studies at a very early age in ballet, tap, modern, piano, violin, speech and drama and singing and since then has performed extensively in concerts and festivals. No stranger to hard work, Emily toured the UK with theatre companies for several years and now lives in Northampton from where she greatly enjoys life as a concert soloist. Emily has performed at large, outdoor classical proms concerts as a soloist and was thrilled and honoured to perform the National Anthem on behalf of the Football Association on two occasions for the FA Cup Final. In addition she is in huge demand for weddings and all other special family occasions and is often asked to perform with choral societies and choirs all over the country. Emily says “I love to sing to tell the story and to be the character within the song, and to really engage with my audience and to put over the song’s emotions, and I hope people go away feeling that I have done that. And of course, I love the glamour of dressing up as every show is a special occasion and knowing that I have made an effort with my appearance gives me added confidence. It’s a real privilege for me to sing as the bride walks up the aisle or whilst the couple are signing the register and to be a part of their special day.” To check availability or for more information please contact Louise Harris on 07980 996318 or email louise@louiseharrispr.co.uk and there is lots of information, video and audio files on Emily’s website www.emilyhaigsoprano.com

The Poet Amongst Us James McInerney

J

ames grew up in an area in Northampton aptly named ‘Poets Corner’, unbeknownst that poetry was to become a huge part of his life. Having no prior interest in the subject matter in his younger years, James discovered the wonders of writing in his twenties. Mixing his own thoughts and emotions with classical and instrumental film scores, he realised for the first time in his life that there was more to writing than met the eye. With no real influences or coming from a writing background, James’ enthusiasm grew and grew and it was full steam ahead – with no turning back! Not content with writing words for his own amusement, he continued to test the

Of all the most beautiful places on earth, only Sandals Antigua has earned the title of "World's Most Romantic Resort." Filled with the authentic charm of the islands in its lush garden oasis known as The Caribbean Grove... and resplendent with European grandeur amidst its palatial retreat known as The Mediterranean Village, this spectacular resort offers the best of both worlds on one idyllic island. Where balmy breezes still whisper tales of yore when British Admiral Lord Nelson sailed these famous shores. We stayled at Sandals Grande Antigua in January and from the moment of our arrival with the champagne greeting, to staff singing to us as we left, it lived

26

up to its beautiful and romantic reputation. The temperature was perfect for us at around 28C, there was the daily spot of rain typical of the Carribean at that time of year, which all the guest, sat through by the pool until it passed. At Sandals Grande Antigua you'll enjoy some of the most exotic and romantic rooms and suites ever created. We stayed in the Mediterranean Village on the club package. Our room had an enormous four-poster bed it required a ladder to get into, particularly if you are little on the short side (like me). Our bathroom suite was equipped with double sink, a sunk in round spa bath, large enough for two, and also included a separate shower. Crisp white robes were hanging ready for us in the wardrobe and we enjoyed a balcony over looking the resort out to the bay. Our room was equipped with a bar and this included full sized bottles of good quality spirits, wine, champagne and beer, as well as soft drinks, all of which were topped up daily. The resort itself was paradise, the gardens were beautifully maintained and tiny humming birds with iridescent green crest on their heads darted amongst the hibiscus. Birds were everywhere and at night the distinctive call of tree frogs had us hunting high and low to find one.

Sandals Resort Dickenson Bay There was plenty of on site entertainment, equally there were quiet fire pits and hammocks dotted around the resort, private cabanas and plenty of seclusion for honeymoon couples. The resort boasts 11 places to eat, by far our favourite was Barefoot on the Beach but all the food was delicous. The outstanding experience was the friendly, helfpful and willing staff and the strict no tip policy was a real shame. The only downside was needing to be up early to secure a poolside sunbed, although there were beds elsewhere, including the beach if you didn’t make it. If you opt for butler service

then your have someone to save the beds for you, complete with flower arrangements and fresh towels. For a truly special experience, book one of the Rondovals (suites-in-the-round) freestanding, completely circular havens that open out either directly onto the beach or onto your own personal dipping pool. This resort lived up to its reputation in all ways. Dickenson Bay is as idyllic as the photographs if not more so and the people were fantastic. We booked through Virgin and had a seamless and enjoyable trip.

A REAL STAG DO

The last throws of singledom, the stories that “stay on tour”, the lost groom, the shots, the hangover, the hen party you met! That will be your average stag do then. Face it, unless you are getting married in your 20’s or maybe even up to your late 30’s the idea of downing shots in Peurto Banus or staggering off a ‘fun’ bus around Newcastle is not quite as appealing as it once might have been, if it ever was! Not only that but your brotherin-arms may well be more brothers-with-baby-in-arms these days, not to mention the ageing relatives that could be in tow.

together. There are many available but we looked at Glencarron Estate near Inverness with its aptly named Stag Lodge. This is a 12,000 acre estate and offers many activities but in particular Stag and Hind stalking which in the Scottish Highlands is a tradition and a link to the country’s culture and history. Not only is it a way to take part in a sport that has been carried out for years but it also allows you to see some of the incredible scenery of mountains and lochs as you search for your stag or hind. You will need to be fairly fit and in good health to take part in the stalking as the terrain covered can become rugged and includes steep hills, and when a deer is shot and killed the body will need to be dragged.

Deer stalking is not only a sport but a part of modern day land management. By taking part you are helping to protect the local native plants and wildlife, as well as maintain a healthy and strong deer population. If Fortunately the typical stag do is this is not to your taste there is not your only choice and if this a photo stalking alternative. has never been your scene then forcing yourself to down Jaeger For the more sedate, consider bombs is really not a great way clay pigeon shooting, or fishing, to celebrate. which depending on the season Taking a country lodge is an includes; salmon, sea trout inspiring alternative and has the and brown trout. There are advantage of bringing all ages also nearby attractions of golf,

boat trips and sailing plus rail enthusiastics can admire the Kyle Line. The Stag Lodge at Glencarron looks very comfortably equipped so bring food and ale and you should be all set although there is a pub nearby. You don’t have to travel all the way to Inverness, there are many similar experiences up and down the country but this estate is the real deal when it comes to a stag do! www.glencarronestate.co.uk Telephone 01271 377432

Walking and Stalking

For a weekend away you probably only need to have waterproofs although Rugged and Tough supply clothes for walking and stalking too. A good set of walking boots are essential. Look for boots that give plenty of ankle support with a hook and eye fastening; the hooks allow the boots to be fastened high if you are walking on rugged terrain. Look for a sole with good tread and a breathable lining such as Gortex to keep your feet comfortable and prevent blisters. Expert advice and help is at hand at Rugged & Tough in Hockliffe with boots for all budgets. www.ruggedtough.com

It’s the Law

MedICal NeglIgeNCe What is medical negligence? This is an area of law that enables you to claim compensation for injury or loss suffered as a result of poor medical treatment from a healthcare professional. This can include a mis-diagnosis, incorrect treatment/medicine or a mistake during surgery.

How long do I have to make a claim? You have three years from the negligent treatment or within 3 years of you knowing of potential negligent treatment. Exceptions apply for children or those with mental difficulties. We recommend that you contact our medical negligence specialists as soon as possible.

How much will it cost to make a claim? This is dependent on the nature and complexity of your claim. However, you would not usually have to pay anything at all if we do not win your claim.

How do I pay for these services? Legal Aid is now only available for a very small number of

32

medical negligence claims. If you have Legal Expense Insurance, this may cover some of your costs. We will check for you. In all other cases, we operate under a Conditional Fee Agreement, which is often known as “no win, no fee”.

When will the hospital or doctor know about my claim? When we first apply for a copy of your medical records, we’ll have to give them some brief information about your claim.

Will the claim affect my medical treatment?

Can I make a medical negligence claim on behalf of someone else? Yes - if for your child, you must be a parent or guardian. If on behalf of someone who has died, you must be the spouse or Executor of the estate.

Spring Cleaning Start from the top... Sweep the chimney & kick start your garden with a spring tidy up

Good Luck will rub off (but why?) The classic Mary Poppins, immortalised the lucky sweep through Dick Van Dykes film role lyrics ‘a sweep is as lucky, as lucky can be.’ however why we believe this is a little vague. A consistent belief is that a sweep grasped the reins of a panicking horse and saved its hapless rider from certain death. He then disappeared into the throng not realising he had saved the life of King George II. The King declared that all chimney sweeps were bearers of good luck and must be treated with respect. Over two hundred years later Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s marriage was also blessed, when on their wedding morning Prince Philip had a lucky send off’ from the palace sweep, a man named John Lewis. The film of the royal wedding can be viewed on the Pathe website with Prince Philip and Lord Milford passing the chimney sweep replete with brushes. http://www.britishpathe.com/video/stills/theprincesss-wedding-day-reel-1. Nowadays you can have a far more modern twist on your chimney sweep as many more of them are women including Leighton Buzzard’s own chimney sweep, Sue Stokes.

A free, local service to help resolve your customer service gripes, champion the good & expose the bad!

Championing the good

Whether it’s a complaint that has not been taken seriously, or you don’t know where else to turn, we will try to help you. You could be sick of chasing information, waiting for an order or refund long overdue, disappointed in a restaurant or haircut or aghast at how much you’ve been wrongly billed.

Who’s behind Soapbox?

How does Soapbox help resolve customer service issues? Once you’ve posted on our site at www. soapboxshout.com, our team escalates your complaint to get some action working with the regulators where necessary. We also promote your story on social media empowering each individual to get their voice heard and rights as a consumer respected. Our platform promotes transparency, keeping an audit trail so nothing is lost.

But what happens if the organisation doesn’t respond? We give the company time to respond, respecting their “response time”. But when we are merely fobbed off either with corporate jargon, or worse, blatant disregard, then the company is named and shamed with the appropriate “Fobbed Off” status. This means that at least others can be warned before spending their hard earned cash or precious time to end up

being let down.

Happily we’re able to resolve many issues quickly. We love to champion the companies that do care enough to put things right & change perceptions.

My name’s Clare Lonsdale. One night in the pub my friends & I realised we were doing a lot of moaning about the injustices and frustrations of unrepentant bad service (more apparent now than ever since I had a young child & less time to waste chasing down rabbit holes). So we set Soapbox up in 2014. We’ve been amazed at the response since then. Running this service in our free time is keeping us busy but it’s very rewarding. Who knows where it will lead but for now we’re just going with the flow. Being very local, we thought you’d want to know WE’RE HERE to help especially with anything that’s likely to be close to our hearts & location! :) Like us on Facebook & do follow us on Twitter & help spread the word! The Bride

Exochorda Macrantha

garden April is a busy time in the garden as plants are waking from their winter dormancy and there is a lot to be done in preparation for the months ahead. Seeds can be sown and lawns to mown, and a lot to enjoy as the spring flowering plants start to come into their own.

Jobs for the garden

Plant of the Month Exochorda x Macrantha , ‘The Bride’ There are several Exochorda species, all very beautiful Chinese shrubs when in flower, the best known being ‘The Bride’. When in flower, this deciduous shrub is just gorgeous. For about six weeks in April and May, its arching branches are wreathed in open white flowers that almost smother the soft, green foliage. In autumn the leaves turn delicate shades of yellow and orange. They need some shelter from late spring frosts, which can scorch the young foliage, and cannot tolerate a lot of lime in the soil. Although it will take some shade, it flourishes best in a sunny, open position. It can also be trained as a wall shrub and will grow to about 2 metres high. This shrub has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

38

• Get on top of weeds to prevent them seeding and becoming a problem. Hoe the border once a week. Perennial weeds, such as dandelions, need a weedkiller containing glyphosate to get rid of them permanently. • Start mowing the lawn once a week, beginning with the blades at the highest setting and gradually lowering them over the weeks. • Remove any faded flowers from early-flowering bulbs, especially daffodils. Leave the leaves to die down, remember don’t knot them even though they look untidy. • Sow carrots, peas, beetroot, broccoli, salad crops direct into the ground. Marrows, courgettes, squashes and tomatoes can all be sown in a heated greenhouse or propagator. • Climbers will grow quickly now, so ensure they have enough support, either against a wall or on a trellis or obelisk. • Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They love delicious young shoots, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, liquid slug killer or ‘slug shocka’ to keep them away from your precious plants.

to convince ourselves that life is good, and normal? Emma is living ‘the lie’, through her The Lie assumed identity of Jane. No by one would ever guess what had C L Taylor happened to her which means Read this if: the letter can only have come from one person. You are living a The Jungle Book lie!

Watch this if: The Lie by C L Taylor Jane Hughes is 30, lives in rural Wales with her boyfriend, and works for a local animal sanctuary. Reliable and dependable she seems to have a perfect life. Until one day a letter arrives at work and suddenly the secret she has been hiding for the last 5 years threatens everything. Jane Hughes does not exist. This is a gripping thriller. It’s a little slow to get going, but as it gathers pace it is almost guaranteed you will not want to put it down. Taylor manages to capture in great detail the excitement of a holiday with your friends to exotic places where time stands still and you have the freedom to relax: the novelty of travelling without your parents. In this case Emma and her friends travel to Nepal to a yoga and meditation retreat: a girlie trip to help one of them get over a break-up. But the idyll is soon revealed to be anything but, and before the end of the novel two of the party will be dead. Exactly how and why is ‘the lie’ of the title. Or is it? Is ‘the lie’ instead referring to the need

(voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smoothtalking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. Inspired by Disney’s 1967 animated classic, the film features state-of the-art technology that immerses audiences in the lush world like never before. More true to the disney film than the book as Mowgli remains a boy throughout the film. Release date: 15th April. PG Anthems for Doomed Youth The Libertines

Listen to this if: The Jungle Book Based on the 1894 book/collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling is an all-new epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of selfdiscovery, guided by pantherturned-stern mentor Bagheera

If you have forgotten Doherty was a songwriter

The Guardian wrote: “Anthems for Doomed Youth isn’t perfect, but it succeeds in redressing the balance, reminding you that before Doherty became an embarrassing red-top fixture, he and Barât were genuinely great songwriters with a uniquely skewed vision. It might represent a new start or a full stop: either way, it’s a huge improvement on the way the Libertines’ story seemed fated to end.”

Having enjoyed Indoor and Short Mat bowls through the winter, and been inspired by the World Bowls on BBC2 in January, our bowlers eagerly await a return to bowling in the sunshine on their beautiful green at Cheddington’s Recreation Ground on the High Street. The outdoor season starts on April 24th. The Green is open for new bowlers to Give Bowls A Go each Tuesday (2pm) and Friday (6pm) from May to September. Wayne Rooney may be on £350,000 a week, but it cost a new bowler less than a £1 a week to become a member of Cheddington Bowls Club. Where can you find a better combination of value and fun, for we provide an excellent all year bowling and social event calendar. With love from ‘Jack’: 01525 220644

Recipe from Nick Coffer BBC 3 Counties Radio Makes 4-6 tumblers (dependent on size) or one medium-sized trifle bowl These individual desserts would be perfect for a wedding dessert in coloured glass as pictured.

Pear and Ginger Tiramisu Trifle

Method

Ingredients: 3 large free-range eggs – yolks and whites separated 100g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or extract 250g tub Mascarpone 2 very ripe pears 250ml sherry ½ packet Ginger Snap Biscuits or Ginger Cake 100g grated dark or white chocolate for sprinkling on top A dusting of cocoa powder (optional)

Whisk the eggs yolks, caster sugar and vanilla together with an electric whisk for around 5 minutes until the mixture is pale and fluffy. Add in the tub of Mascarpone and mix until smooth.

The ingredients will combine better at room temperature

Pour the sherry into a small bowl, dip six ginger biscuits into the sherry and then place one in each glass, or lay them all flat across one bowl, working quickly so that the biscuits don’t get too soggy.

In a second, clean bowl, beat your egg whites until soft peaks form. With a metal spoon, fold the egg whites into your egg and Mascarpone mixture.

Add a few slices of pear on top of the ginger biscuits. Next, spoon some of your creamy mixture into the bottom of your tumblers/bowl. Repeat until all the mixture is used up. Cover with clingfilm and refrigerate, preferably overnight. Just before eating, sprinkle with grated dark or white chocolate, dust with a little cocoa powder if you wish and then serve.

Have a large trifle bowl or six small glasses/tumblers ready. Peel, core and finely slice the pears. Hear recipes on Nick Coffer’s Weekend Kitchen every Sunday morning on BBC Three Counties radio at 11am. You can also join Nick every weekday afternoon at midday
