Hello What a time I have had since I last wrote! Finishing the last magazine, going on holiday and moving house all in the same month wasn’t my best decision and living out of my holiday suitcase when I got back was a little chilly. I am all settled now and the office phone is back in working Bee Local Magazine is your order for those of you who couldn’t reach me. I would love to hear local magazine for Leighton from my regular callers, particularly for a Christmas chat (you know who you are) and of course anyone else who has anything to tell me. Buzzard and the surrounding villages. Did you see the fantastic pumpkin picture of Isabella on the Facebook page? Unfortunately I have run out of space to print it here but I do like to receive your pictures and when I can, I will print them. We have a bumper what’s on section in this edition including, most importantly, where to see Santa! Also lots of events for charity and the town centre weekend too a few of the events are on different pages so please check through to avoid missing out. When choosing your makeup Christmas is the perfect opportunity to glam up! Time to Sparkle Christmas is full of sparkle and fun especially when it comes to beauty! The festive season is packed with parties and celebrations but at such a busy time of year beauty preparations can sometimes get forgotten with last minute panics the night before the office party! There is nothing quite like a professional gel manicure, giving you that wonderful polished feel. Lasting up to 3 weeks it sees you through a number of different parties. I use Gelish by Nail Harmony and after testing many brands this one came top! Use their Nourish oil morning and night to condition the nails and ensure your gels take you through Christmas & New Year! A touch of glitter on your nails can make you feel really Christmassy and if don’t fancy a full set of sparkly nails why not try a ‘colour pop’ with a festive champagne gold or twinkly silver on just a couple of nails. If you’re using a glitter polish at home try applying with a makeup applicator to give more coverage. Don’t forget your toenails if you are wearing open toe shoes!

You can reduce negative effects of alcohol by having the equivalent amount of water in between each drink. BE MERRY! news New Engineering Skills Centre in Leighon Buzzard
Central Bedfordshire College is delighted to be working in partnership with SEMLEP and Central Bedfordshire Council to bring an innovative new Engineering Skills Centre to Leighton Buzzard in 2017. The idea behind the project is to meet the skills gap in engineering and construction industries across the region. This new Centre will be based on Chartmoor Avenue in Leighton Buzzard and construction work started in early November with the first cohort of students due to begin their training in September 2017. The purpose built high end technology centre will be able to accommodate 350 students and it is hoped that it will become an integral part of the community as well as being a college building. Local businesses have been invited to get involved in the project with support from the LB Collective business group as well as Andrew Sealous MP. With the new M1 link road due to open in Spring 2017 this centre will also help to secure future investment in Leighton Buzzard by providing

local business with a pipeline of skilled workers. On the ground floor of the Centre there will be a dedicated welding workshop with a state of the art welding simulator which is being developed in conjunction with Weldability. With electronic engineering workshops specialising in robotics there will also be an impressive 100sqm double height demonstration space. On the second floor there will be two fully equipped science labs and classroom facilities. The foyer of the building will have a café open to the public. Central Bedfordshire College is the only college in the area to be awarded a Grade 2 by Ofsted twice in a row. The most recent inspection in March 2016 particularly highlighted the College’s strength of engagement with local employers and the important role it plays in meeting social and economic needs in the area, it also commented on the standard of practical skills gained by students improving their overall employability and the clear career pathways in place that results in 97% of students successfully progressing to university or straight into employment. Principal Mr Ali Hadawai CBE is delighted to see the Centre beginning construction this week saying “We are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to the community making Leighton Buzzard a destination for high end technology. The the skills and knowledge gained by students training at the Centre
will not only help the local economy but the wider Central Beds area thrive.” The College will keep the local community updated on the building progress with photography students documenting the process using time lapse techniques as well as new drone technology. www.centralbeds.ac.uk 01582 477776 FB & Twitter: @centralbeds
Use Your LOAF
Bedford based LOAF (which stands for Loads of Autistic Fun) allows children with autism to relax, have fun and ‘be themselves’ with people who understand their complex needs and anxieties. There are all kinds of play and leisure activities for the children including arts and crafts, toys, games, soft play, outside play and occasionally a bouncy castle. Parents are able to meet in the parents’ room to relax and feel supported without anyone judging them because of their child’s behaviour. Many share experiences with other parents, supporting each other when times are difficult. There are new voluntary roles available and this is an ideal opportunity for individuals to gain valuable experience in childcare, youth work and special educational needs, specifically autism and related conditions. Christmas Panic Ye Not! Holidays are coming, holidays are coming, holidays are... No, seriously, holidays are actually coming, and when we say coming we mean coming faster than you can say 'Haven't managed to pay back what I borrowed to make Greece happen this summer'. It's almost as if we've not all been here before, every year of our lives. Christmas- or the festive period at least- is just around the corner, with the shopping weeks starting to tick down. The problem being that when time flies like you're having fun, even if you're actually just spending most of your time at work/looking after the family/sleeping, it's easy to completely lose track of the days and suddenly realise you're fresh out of that most precious of commodities. Phew. Panic not we have put our heads together and come up with the following cheat sheet, ensuring you definitely won't (shouldn't?) miss the all-important points of no return and wind up having to make up some apologetic excuse about why so-and-so got no card, she didn't receive the whatever, and that guy was left wondering what happened to his thing too!

In the Garden
Plant of The Month The Christmas Cactus
Your December Garden
Another gardening year is nearly over but we still have pansies and cyclamen in flower, berries of skimmias, decorative seed heads and colourful barks to keep the garden looking good.
Jobs for the garden
• Keep lawns, borders and paths clear of fallen leaves. • Once deciduous plants and climbers have cleared, repair garden structures. • Dig on new borders. • Plant evergreen shrubs if conditions are dry. • Plant bare-root roses, trees and shrubs. • Net holly bunches to protect them from birds to ensure you have berries for Christmas decorations. • Net your pond to keep the water clear of leaves. • Prune bush roses down by half to avoid roots damage in winter winds. • Clear the remains of old crops in vegetable patches
Christmas Trees
Commonly known as the non-drop tree, the Nordmann Fir, is generally the most popular due to its excellent needle retention and good shape and colour. Norway Spruce is the traditional tree, beautiful and bushy with a strong fragrance but the needles are slightly spiky and tend to drop.
Christmas cacti are splendid plants. They pump out masses of delicate jungle flowers in rosy red, white, orange, pink, and pale yellow, depending on the variety, just in time for the festive season. And although they're a true cactus, their spines are so tiny and soft that you'll barely notice them - and never get pricked. Also as each outer leaf produces its own flower the display gets better year on year. They are available in shops and garden centres right now and are just perfect for those hard-to-buy-for souls.
Scots Pine is a very bushy tree. It has extra long blue green needles and good needle retention. Others to look out for are the Fraser Fir, another excellent needle retaining tree and the Noble Fir with wonderful fragrance and also good for a small location. With all cut or potted trees, ensure they are regularly watered – a tree can drink up to 2-3 pints of water a day. Enjoy a real tree this Christmas.
Wishing all our customers a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year Gardening Advice from Gill Potash Nursery www.potashplants.co.uk 30 Tell our advertisers youGallon, found them in Bee Local Magazine

An update on your Garden Waste
Kerbside collection of household garden waste will be suspended across Central Bedfordshire over the winter months. The collections will be suspended from Monday 5 December 2016 until Friday 24 February 2017. Residents are encouraged to check their last collection date for their area which will be either the week commencing Monday 21 or Monday 28 November. The decision to stop the kerbside collection service during the quietest time of the year for garden waste was made as part of the Councils’ financial planning process and comes as a result of Government funding cuts. Council Tax alone doesn’t raise enough to cover the services the Council provides and so it is focusing on tailoring services to meet periods of high demand, in this case during the growing season. During the suspension, green waste can be recycled at Household Waste Recycling Centres and where residents have enough space in their gardens, they are encouraged to compost at home. A council scheme to encourage composting offers all Central Bedford-

Just For Men sponsored by Rugged & Tough
Socks for Christmas
With Christmas upon us the standard jokes (or reality) about men receiving socks as presents are rife! Although joked about they can be a fantastic present particularly if you have been a victim of the curious but frequent case of the missing sock.. Before the Industrial Revolution, socks and stockings were knitted. The first knitted socks, from around 1500 BC, were found in Jutland, now part of Denmark. The first stockings were found in Egyptian graves in Antinoe, from circa 500 AD. For a long time, stockings were a privilege of the rich, as the manufacturing was a guild secret. In the Middle Ages, the pants and stocking together formed one piece of clothing. Later, the stockings on the pants were changed more frequently, since they became dirty much more quickly. Eventually, stockings became fully independent articles of clothing. At he beginning of the Modern Age the Reverend William Lee (born in 1550 in Nottingham) invented the knitting loom
36
in 1589, making knit fabrics far easier to produce. Queen Elizabeth I received a pair of black stockings from Lee, but declined to grant a patent for his invention, horrified by the socks’ crude form and afraid it would take away jobs from her people. But France’s King Henri IV offered Lee financial support, so the inventor moved to Rouen and built a stocking factory. Before long the Huguenots spread the knitting loom throughout Europe. After the Industrial Revolution the socks, mostly still made of wool, became easier and cheaper to produce, spreading their appeal across European society. In the Industrial Age socks become mass produced, Reverend William Lee’s original invention developed further. In the beginning of the 19th century, the first circular knitting frames were developed, which allowed a mostly mechanized process. As a consequence, many home workers lost their jobs and many manufacturers sacked sock makers. Eventually, as cheaper materials were used and factory production advanced, socks became mass-market goods. In modern times the sock has moved on and although the mass produced cheap sock is still available materials with wicking, heating and cooling qualities are now available but what else... Well back to the mysteries of the missing sock and through
the power of the internet you can get socks by subscription or sockscription! Not only that but you can now purchase “smart socks” that communicate with your iphone. Your phone knows which socks belong together, and could help sort them out, how often you have washed your socks, when your socks were produced. Your iPhone can also tell you if your black socks are no longer properly black and help you buy new socks. For more history of socks or to order smart socks visit www.blacksocks.com/ uk Not many of us need our socks to communicate with us so closer to home Rugged and Tough stock a full range of socks including • Blaklader workwear socks • Seeland wellington sock • Harika day hiker and expedition socks • Shooting and stalking socks We can also offer advice on the right sock for your needs. Add Rugged and Tough socks to your Christmas list. Rugged and Tough are stockists of the leading brands of Countrywear & Workwear. It’s the Law
wHat do tHe CHIldren reallY want tHIs CHrIstMas? Many separated families fall into a pattern of taking turns in having the children over Christmas. However, for those still in the early days of separation, making these arrangements can be fraught with emotion.
Ideas on How to arrange ContaCt over CHrIstMas Plan ahead A good idea would be to discuss both the Christmas and New Year periods well in advance to keep the festivities as stress-free as possible.
Children First Always put the children’s feelings first in all discussions. While you may want to split Christmas day think about whether this is fair on them, especially if long distances are involved. Children would rather be with family on Christmas day than being driven from house to house. A popular choice for separated families is to celebrate Christmas twice; this often means Christmas Day with one
40
parent and Boxing Day with the other, alternating each year. Inform your children so they feel reassured knowing they’ll be able to spend time with both parents. Be positive about the other parent as it is very difficult for a child to hear negative comments about their parents.
Contact When It Is Not Your turn If it is your turn to have the children a quick call, Skype or Facetime can be reassuring for both the children and the absent parent.
When You Cannot Agree The greatest gift you can give your child is to love them more than you hate your ex-spouse; this allows you to make decisions in the best interests of your child.
Family Mediation Trained mediators can help with discussing the situation, giving you both the opportunity to have your
opinion heard and providing you with the tools to come up with a workable solution for all involved.
Legal Advice If mediation fails then you can apply to court for a Child Arrangements Order. This sets out who has contact with the child, how often this will be and for how long, as well as the issue of who is the resident parent. Court proceedings should always be a last resort- it can be a stressful and expensive experience. Before making an application for an order it’s advisable to seek legal advice.

Check your body is winter ready with a free health ‘MOT’ Residents aged 40 to 74 are being encouraged to have a free ‘health MOT’ to check they are fit for the coming winter and beyond. Free NHS Health Checks are available to over 40s who aren’t currently diagnosed with a longterm condition like diabetes or high blood pressure.
your height, weight and cholesterol level and asking questions about your lifestyle and family medical history. Taking this information also means that you can be offered personalised advice on how to reduce your risk.
This 20 minute check assesses your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia – conditions that can often be prevented.
Cllr Maurice Jones, Executive Member for Health at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Many of us make the effort to make sure that our cars are winter-ready, but our busy lives often mean that our own health is at the bottom of our list of priorities.
Your risk of developing these health conditions is calculated by taking measurements such as
“An NHS Health Check is like an MOT for your body - it makes sure that some of your body’s
most important systems are all running smoothly and can help spot any potential problems before they cause real damage, helping you stay healthy for longer.” If you are eligible, your local GP surgery will invite you for an NHS Health Check once every five years, but you don’t have to wait for an invite – you can also contact your GP surgery to find out more about how to make an appointment. For more information, search online for ‘NHS Health Checks Central Bedfordshire’.
