Know anyone who works from home? (This article might just save their sanity)

With over 4 million people in the UK now working from home, there’s a good chance that you, or someone you know, has joined the growing WFH population. Working from home is the dream, isn’t it? No commute, no traffic jams, no smelly armpits to contend with on the train. You work to your rules, your dress code (PJs, pants or onesie) and your schedule. The perfect work/life balance, right? Not always. Working from home can be difficult to get right. It can be plagued with heavy distraction, crippling procrastination and terrible isolation for many who allow themselves to fall into the wrong routines. It’s easily done. We’ve all been there when a pressing, overwhelming or boring job needs to be finished (or started) and we decide, in our wisdom, that we can’t possibly work on it right now because we desperately need to sort out that drawer in the kitchen, reorganise the living room, clear the garage or have a quick browse online for that essential ‘thing’…only to discover at 6pm that we’ve accomplished zilch. Sometimes too much flexibility can lead to bad habits, which can result in real feelings of guilt and depression, and a serious lack of motivation and confidence. Working without

structure and human contact (the pets and kids don’t count) can genuinely affect your health and enthusiasm for your work. So how do you make working from home, work better? Whether you work for yourself, remotely for someone else, or as a student, improve your home working set-up with these three tips:

Give your week some structure. You don’t need to conform to the 9-5 daily schedule but do set yourself times, or days, to get your head down. Work when you’re at your most productive – don’t force it when you’re not.

Allow yourself time not to work. Don’t check emails around the clock or you’ll never switch off. Build in time to do things that don’t involve work, at the times of the day you’re least productive. You’ll avoid the guilt then.

Get out of the house and reconnect. Coworking workspaces are designed to help you get your work done, on your terms, alongside like-minded people in an inspirational setting. They are great for productivity and combating feelings of isolation.

If you know any freelancers, professionals or PHD students who work from home, save their sanity and send them to: www.funkbunk.com

Are you suffering * from h.o.m.e. ? *Home Office Mental Exhaustion Those most at risk include people who work from home, especially freelancers, the self-employed, PHD students, and working parents of young children.

Recognise the symptoms Blurred Responsibilities Lack of work and family life separation can lead to repeated household chores, DIY, and favours for family and neighbours. Working in the presence of children may cause uncontrollable temper tantrums – some of which may be your own.

Decreased Privacy Lack of privacy surrounding the work area has been known to increase stress. It is not uncommon for sufferers to discover Lego, laundry and stray family members in the office.

Feelings of Isolation Realisation that the dog/cat/baby is not, in fact, laughing at your jokes or even listening can result in feelings of isolation. Occurs when sufferers fail to maintain adult human contact.

Loss of Identity Loss of professional image and credibility is common. Speaking to clients on the phone whilst wearing pyjamas can occur. Many don’t believe you have a real job, which can cause frustration and, in severe cases, hair loss.

Increased Procrastination Frequent periods of procrastination can occur causing severe lack of productivity, enthusiasm and motivation. In extreme cases, sufferers may experience Aussie-soap-itis or X-boxisms.

Inability to Gauge Time This advanced symptom normally presents itself between the hours of 5pm and 3am when sufferers realise nothing has been achieved all day. Can cause extreme anxiety.

ACT NOW! Sufferers are advised to begin a course of FunkBunk immediately. Recommended starting dose is 1 – 2 days per week, increasing as required. A repeat prescription of FunkBunk has been shown to permanently cure all symptoms of H.O.M.E.

FunkBunk is a fully furnished, inspirational, drop-in shared workspace for people who work from home.

Desks and sanity available from £12 per day.

Possible side effects of FunkBunk: Increase in productivity, creativity, revenue and wellbeing. People may also notice an enhanced perception of their professionalism, the ability to relax at home again and a wider circle of likeminded friends and contacts.

welcome changes to health & safety legislation Self-employed - No More Health and Safety? From the 1st October 2015 an estimated 1.7 million selfemployed people will no longer have to comply with health and safety law. This is as a result of The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (General Duties of Self-Employed) (Prescribed Undertakings) Regulations 2015 coming into force. If you’re self-employed before jumping with joy make sure you are exempt as the change doesn’t apply to everyone.

Unsure if it applies to you? Seek professional help from a qualified health and safety consultant Hascat Safety www.hascatsafetyco.uk 01525 630676 we are registed on: The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (http://www.oshcr.org)

What is meant by ‘SelfEmployed’? The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) state “For health and safety purposes, self-employed’ means that you don’t work under a contract of employment and work only for yourself”. You may be self-employed for tax purposes, but this may not be so for health & safety. Please refer to the HMRC ‘Employment Status Guidance for assistance. (https:// www.gov.uk/working-for-yourself/ what-counts-as-self-employed) Am I Exempt? If you work in a ‘Prescribed

Undertaking’ health & safety law still applies. These are:-: Agriculture Asbestos Construction Gas GM Organisms Railway The requirements of Health and safety law will still apply to you if you are self-employed but employ others. There is also a catch-all that if your work poses a risk to the health & safety of others (e.g. members of the public, clients, contractors, etc.) the law still applies to you, The significant, and potentially problematic, consideration for the self-employed is that (if their business is not in one of the prescribed undertakings) they will have to conduct an assessment of whether their undertaking falls within the scope of the catch-all, in that it may pose a risk to others. The individual's liability to prosecution for breaches of health and safety legislation will turn on whether their undertaking falls within this provision or not, so it is imperative to get that assessment right.

Could cosmetic dentistry help? As we head towards the festive season there’s a renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving. In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three and eleven penalty points. There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three years It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence results. Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving, reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be more difficult to process information for example. All of these put you at risk.

Celebrity Weight Loss Secret Revealed Earlier this year a curious story appeared in the press about Nigella Lawson, Britain’s voluptuous Domestic Goddess losing two stone and at least two dress sizes with the aid of hypnosis. Then came reports that singer Lily Allen had shed surplus pounds the same way and by summer, reality show TOWIE’s Gemma Collins was telling a woman’s magazine she’d dropped an incredible three stone thanks to an imaginary, hypnotic ‘gastric band’, alongside glorious pictures of her stunning new figure to prove it. You can see why hypnotherapy appeals to celebrities – no calorie counting, no forbidden foods, no surgery, no scars and no risk of complications. Perfect! The question is, what took them so long to discover it? Here in the three counties area, our women and a few brave men have been quietly liberating themselves from unwanted flab with the aid of the Virtual Gastric Band programme, for the past two years. ‘It’s wonderful,’ says Paula from Leighton Buzzard, who’s been struggling with increasing weight for nearly 50 years and ended up with serious health issues as a result.

’I’ve been trying to slim since I was 16 but nothing worked and I just got heavier and heavier. I was sceptical when I heard about the Virtual Gastric Band but there was nothing else left for me so I gave it a try. It’s been amazing. I’ve lost 4 stone in six months and I’m not stopping there. I feel like I’ve got my life back.’ ‘It’s surprisingly easy,’ says Louise from Watford, ‘I mean I knew where I was going wrong with my eating and what I should be doing but I just couldn’t seem to do it. Then several friends lost weight with the VGB. To be honest I suspected it was all mumbo jumbo but they’d done so well I went along too. To my amazement I’ve lost two stone, no problem. It’s like a switch has been turned on in my head.’ But hypnotherapy isn’t brain-washing. You have to be absolutely serious and committed about losing weight for it to work and it’s not for everyone, though we don’t fully understand why yet. But for the majority, the Virtual Gastric Band is an enjoyable, relaxing and highly effective weight loss method. And when you think about it, it makes sense doesn’t it? If you want to change your weight, you’ve first got to change your mind. (Linda Dearsley is a hypnotherapist. For more info contact her at ladears@gmail.com www.easy2slim.co.uk)

Clinical Negligence Claims: The Facts

What is Clinical Negligence? Clinical negligence is the breach of a medical professional’s duty of care to a patient. In order to succeed with a clinical negligence claim, you must establish that a medical practitioner’s duty of care towards you has been breached and that the breach has caused you an injury or loss. Breach of duty The first step in any clinical negligence claim is to prove that there has been a breach of duty. What this means is that the care provided fell below the standard of a reasonably competent doctor in that particular field of medicine at that particular time. The test of whether the healthcare professional breached the duty of care is whether he or she has failed to meet the standard of a reasonable body of other medical practitioners also skilled in that field. However, if the defendant can show that there is a respectable body of medical practitioners who would have acted in the same way, then the claim will fail.

obvious as it sounds and has to be supported by independent medical opinion. Compensation Once breach of duty and causation has been established and admitted by the Defendant, compensation will be recoverable. This will include ‘General Damages’ which compensate for the pain and suffering experienced and ‘Special Damages’ which compensate for specific past and future financial losses.

Legal proceedings for adults have to be brought within three years of the date of the injury or the date that you first became aware that the negligent treatment had caused you further injury, known as ‘date of knowledge’. For children, the three year time limit starts to run from their eighteenth birthday, therefore legal proceedings have to be brought before the child reaches Causation age 21. Leighton Buzzard based charity KidsOut is leading a researched backed call for joined-up thinking and policy, at both national and local government level in the children’s services sector and the charities sector.

1.6 million children live in severe poverty and in the UK, 63% of children living in poverty are in a family where someone works.

garden Plant of the Month

er

ctob O n i rden a G r You

Although we had some amazingly warm days this September, autumn is now definitely here, and the days are decidedly shorter. This is the time of change, from summer pinks and blues to the autumn oranges and reds. As the leaves fall, raking them will provide lots of lovely leaf mould for use next year.

GRASSES Maybe not one plant, the grasses really come into their own this time of year. Flower heads dance in the wind and as the weather gets colder provide food for insects. There are grasses for every location, short ones like Festuca glauca, the blue grass, for the front of the border, tall ones such as Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ that can get up to 8 foot tall, Cyperus eragrosis for the bog garden or pond and Stipa tenuissima that looks great in a pot with annuals. Either on their own in or mixed with perennials and shrubs, grasses will give an extra interest and a sense of movement that simply cannot be matched.

Jobs for the garden Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly, bag up or add to compost bins for beautiful leaf mould next year Keep dead- heading and cut back perennials that have died down but leave the more tender ones such as penstemon and salvia until spring. Plant all spring bulbs except tulips which need to wait until next month Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse For those of us with clay soil, now is the perfect time to improve it with

composts and mulch before it becomes too wet or frozen Harvest orchard fruit - store only those in perfect condition. Pick and ripen squash and pumpkin: stand them outdoors on a slatted surface and bring under cover if frosty. Lift remaining maincrop potatoes Prune climbing roses Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf but make sure the soil is well prepared first.

Help is only a telephone call or a visit away, should we need it. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Volunteers needed Relate is in urgent need of volunteers to act as Meet and Greeters in our counselling venue in Leighton Buzzard. At present we have two counsellors working in the Hockliffe Street area of Leighton Buzzard on a Monday 5.45 to 9.00 pm. They counsel families, young people and couples. Our Meet and Greeters volunteer on a rota basis and any help they can give, however small, is very much appreciated as without them we cannot counsel. The commitment in time does not need to be great as every little helps. If anyone is interested in helping out, please call Tina Miller on 01234 356350 or email tina.miller@ relatebedsandluton.org.uk ‘

Why Counselling Might Help

‘A problem shared is a problem halved’. The death of a loved one, depression, redundancy at work, unfulfilled life’s ambitions, anxiety, wanting to understand others better and wanting to feel more confident are personal challenges we all may face at some time. Sharing our concerns with qualified, trained professionals can help, and following are some of the talking therapies on offer. Counselling is available to all people and may be obtained on the NHS following a referral from your doctor. All sessions are conducted in complete confidence by counsellors who have undergone extensive study and training before being registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Counselling may also be provided by other professional bodies such as Relate and ChildLine and other voluntary organisations, Evidence shows that counselling is very effective, B Wickberg and C P Hwang found that 80% of women with major post-natal depression were fully recovered after treatment. Counselling can help a person be more positive, worry less and feel more confident. Additional types of counselling/ therapies include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is currently very popular and helps people to manage problems by changing the way they think and behave. This therapy is proven to help with

mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and phobias. . Couples Counselling (Marriage Guidance) involves a couple and a therapist. The main aim is to improve communication and resolve problems such as lack of trust, abuse, life changes and family contacts faced by intimate couples. Couples look at how factors such as lifestyle, religion and family values affect their relationship and are encouraged to resolve any conflicts they face together. Psychotherapy looks into a person’s past and how that affects the present. This is undertaken over a longer period of time than other forms of counselling and helps a person understand more about themselves, improve relations with others and enjoy life more. Different therapies suit different people and problems; sometimes you may need to speak to a few people before you find someone you feel comfortable with. Do some research yourself but if you are you at a time in your life when events are distressing? or if you overtaken by feelings that you can’t explain and which disturb you, and even overwhelm you, then don’t suffer alone, make a call.

Your Money matters

ARE YOU READY TO RETIRE AT 65? Retirement seems so far away for some of us but with the state pension age going up it is more important than ever to financially plan for life after work. Having a pension is just one way to help you be financially secure when you've stopped working, and mistakes can be costly. It's all about planning for the future.

SEEKING ADVICE The pensions landscape has changed drastically in recent years and it is always worth seeking advice about your personal circumstances, either through an IFA or the Pensions Advisory Service can also offer you basic information. An independent advisor can help with several issues relating to retirement; how to pay off debts; keep your money in the right places and make a will to ensure your family is catered for and any expensive legal fees are avoided. We can put you in touch with an independent financial advisor, so if you have any questions about planning for your retirement, get in touch with us at info@ clarkhowes.com or call your local office. Written by Isabel Macbeth

Retirement planning means you need to see your money in a different light. Instead of accumulating funds, the approach will shift to having a steady, reliable income. This means you shouldn't plan in the same way you would for general investments. You'll need to make sure you will have enough to live on when you're not working anymore. You will need to consider how your lifestyle and outgoings will change. For example, you may have healthcare costs but much lower travel expenses. If you have one, you should also check to see how much is left to pay on your mortgage this can equate to quite a large expense when you are no longer working. Many people choose to pay this off in a lump sum in the early years of retirement. PENSION PLANNING Typically when people think retirement they think 'pensions'. Which is correct — with autoenrolment rolling out in the forthcoming years, providing you are eligible your employer will need to offer you a pension

scheme and will need to pay into it as well. This may have already happened to you. Work-based pensions aren't the only option, you can open a private pension scheme and by paying National Insurance contributions through your income over the years you are entitled to a state pension as well. Be sure to check your National Insurance contributions as this may restrict the amount of state pension you receive. It is unsure what the future holds for the state pension and it is vital that you seek independent advice if you plan on starting a personal pension. But, why stop at a pension? There are so many other types of investments and ways to prepare, it’s important to be as tax efficient as possible. Depending on the size of the estate you have, it is best to build a portfolio of a balanced mixture of investments and see what works best for you. AVOID FUNDAMENTAL MISTAKES All investors make mistakes, however in times of retirement they can be costly as funds may not be as replaceable as someone working full-time. Be sure to take advantage of all tax efficiencies you can. You can get tax relief on pension contributions and use ISAs to store cash where you won’t pay tax on interest. Avoid investing aimlessly and be sure to take the right advice for you and your situation.

Recipe

Pumpkin Soup Winter Warmer

Serves 6

Ingredients

Soup 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped 1kg / 2lb 3oz pumpkins or squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks ½ -1 tsp ground cumin 700ml / 24 fl oz vegetable stock or chicken stock 142ml / 5fl oz pot double cream Salt and pepper Garnish 75g / 3oz lardons Chopped chilli (optional) Tiny sage leaves (optional) Note:

Although this recipe will work with Halloween pumpkins they tend to be bred for size rather than flavour. If you want to use a Halloween pumpkin I’d recommend drizzling the pumpkin pieces with olive oil first, mixing them with the cumin and roasting them in the oven on Gas 6 / 200C for 20-30 minutes. Then follow the recipe as before. Roasting brings out the maximum flavour.

Method

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently fry the finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan with the ground cumin, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour the vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour the pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil,

then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. While the soup is cooking heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the lardons until deep golden brown. Add some chopped chilli and a few small sage leaves to taste, then cook for a few mins more until they too are tinged with colour. Reheat the soup if needed, season to taste, then serve scattered with the lardon garnish. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes (If roasting pumpkin add 20-30 minutes)

The Night Sky October & November 2015 Discover the Andromeda Galaxy Tonight:

Ever seen a distant galaxy beyond our own? Now’s your chance! The Andromeda Galaxy is so far away that light from the stars inside it takes 2.5 million years to cross the void of space to Earth. Yet even at this great distance Andromeda is easy to find with binoculars. Look up high to your south mid-evening for a giant square pattern of stars, and an arc of bright stars running out left. From the square move along this arc by one star and lift your binoculars slightly upwards until you see an oval patch of grey light. This is the glow from a trillion stars that make up the Andromeda Galaxy.

See the ISS from Bedfordshire: Mid-October sees the International Space Station (ISS) sail over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a con-

Eco pile Autumn tidy up

Try building an ‘Eco pile’ this autumn, the perfect place for a Hedgehog and Ground Beetles to overwinter, then simply tidy away your eco-pile in late spring, once hibernation is over.

Convert to Organic Gardening There are many reasons to convert to organic gardening. It may be environmental concerns, or to grow fruit and vegetables naturally and free from chemical residues, or simply to encourage wildlife into the garden enjoying their interaction with the plants that we grow.

veg amongst your flowers, this helps attract beneficial pest eaters. Keep soil healthy by annually adding organic matter like composts, manures or mulching materials, this keeps plants growing strongly resisting pests and diseases.

The way we manage our gardens has a big impact on the need to use gardening chemicals and a few simple changes can make all the difference.

Consider plant positions; shadelovers struggle in hot sunshine, sun-lovers become weakened in shade. Plants on hot patios suffer if not watered regularly and as such become liable to pest and disease attack.

Lightly pruning fruit trees allows light and air into the branches, ripening fruit and reducing disease.

Mowing lawns irregularly and too short weakens the grass and encourages weeds and moss.

Regularly clear away fallen fruit, if left to rot it provides a source of re-infection next year. Remember to leave a few fruits behind for birds and other wildlife to enjoy an autumn fruit feast. Operate a vegetable rotation system, avoiding growing the same crop in the same place each year. If you’ve a small veg patch, then rotate by growing particular crops every other year or so, or try growing

A few simple changes help make a happier, healthier garden.

Women’s fashion retailer Rosa Cristini of SoYou Boutique in Leighton Buzzard says ‘Women of a certain age get stuck in a rut when it comes to colour, but as we age we must update and try new things to suit our changing appearance. Bad habits, such as sticking to one colour, which in our late 20’s and early 30’s worked for us, can age us Helen Mirren in our forties and fifties.' Rocking Red 'Red is a colour women hesitate over wearing, often I hear ‘is it too much?’ ‘Time and time again clients come to me and rarely am I asked if I stock red dresses, yet when our ladies step out of their comfort zone and try on a red dress in the right hue for their skin tone they are amazed at how it makes them feel and equally how well it suits them, it bestows a radiance that knocks years of their appearance.’ Research shows that when worn by a woman, red stimulates interest and passion in men, furthermore, numerous studies have found that women wearing red in a series of photographs presented to participants are rated as more attractive. Indeed, women have been donning red lipstick as far back as 10,000 B.C, Cleopatra, the alpha female of her time, crushed beetles and ants to get just the right shade for her lips, clearly a woman way ahead of her times. Rosa said ‘Why shouldn’t women dress to impress, red is a colour that not only effects people around the wearer but perhaps most importantly the woman wearing the red. Wearing red makes a woman feel confident, sexy, powerful and vibrant.’ ‘With winter drawing near and Christmas just round the corner now is the perfect time to invest in red for your wardrobe.’ Rosa offers a free one to one personal shopping experience to all clients at her boutique in 28a Market Square, Leighton Buzzard. Dresses size 6 to 24, and to complete the look tights stockings, hold-ups, scarves, handbags and jewellry.

Gloriously Gluten Free by Susanna Booth “All the recipes are simple, familiar, traditional recipes we all know and love. It doesn’t use fancy ingredients; all of them are available in most supermarkets. It’s a perfect book for anyone new to gluten-free cooking but those with decades of experience will also find it incredibly useful.” Review by Diana Murphy, founder of The Gluten Free Centre

An inspiring story of family devotion and a personal search for proof of life after death. One moment creating tears of laughter and the next sadness. She, like many, has faced her mother’s battle with cancer, her father’s dementia, her son’s learning disabilities and her own ill health. Her mother, raised by Salvation Army parents, knew she would go to heaven and together they made a plan to prove that death was not the end and the spirit continued. The book takes us on a journey with Wendy as she seeks comfort, peace, strength and proof.
