Bee Local Magazine was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the star studded inaugural awards night of the Milton Keynes Women Leaders Award at the Double Tree Hilton, Stadium MK on the 20th November. The awards were founded by Jan Flawn CBE of PJ Care to celebrate and recognise the achievements and excellence of the women living and working in Milton Keynes. Winners from the award are put forward to the national CBI First Women Awards early next year. Jan, herself a winner of the First Women awards expressed “...the wonderful feeling of having my business skills acknowledged and celebrated... “ It was truly an inspiring evening, speaking first was Nicky Moffatt CBE, Brigadier General, British Army (retired) who spoke of the turning point in her career when she put aside her selfdoubt by equipping herself with the knowledge she needed to excel in her job. Standing before us, confidentally, she also explained how she had overcome her fear of public speaking. If Nicky wasn’t enough inspiration we were also treated to a talk by Dany Cotton Assistant Commissioner, London Fire
Brigade who told us, amusingly and shockingly of her first years with the fire service and how she was told that she wasn’t wanted by her fellow members of her watch but also by her superior officer. She does point out that things have changed and that she still takes great pride in protecting the safety of people in London. The Night Sky December 2015 and January 2016
See The ISS Sail Overhead…or is it Santa?
Mid-December this year sees the International Space Station light up Bedfordshire’s early evening sky. Look for a bright white light moving roughly west to east at a steady pace. It won’t flash or make a noise, and it’ll be very bright – much brighter than the background stars in the sky. Best evenings to view are Friday 11 December to Wednesday 23 December between 4pm and 6pm. On Christmas Eve you’ll find the ISS moving just 20-degrees above your south-west horizon at about 5pm.
Enjoy The Maximum Of The Geminids Meteor Shower: The night of 13 December to 14
December ushers in the maximum of the Geminids Meteor Shower. If it’s a clear night stand outside in your garden and look high up towards your east and south-east from 9pm onwards. If you’re lucky you might catch one of hundreds of shooting stars set to streak across Bedfordshire’s night sky that evening.
Find A New Year Comet From Bedfordshire: Getting a telescope for Christmas? Why not use it to look for Comet Catalina. In January 2016 this bright telescopic comet can be found close to the constellation of Ursa Major, which is also known as the Plough, the Saucepan or the Big Dipper. Best nights to look for the comet are 14 and 15 January when you’ll find it close to the bright star Alkaid at the end of the Plough’s handle. Image: Comet ISON by Mount Lemmon Sky Center

garden Plant of the Month This time of year it has to be the Christmas tree. The most popular is the Nordman Fir, a dark green glossy tree with silvery underside. Excellent needle retention gives it its nickname the Non-drop Christmas tree. Norway Spruce is our traditional tree, beautiful and bushy with a strong fragrance but the needles are slightly spiky and tend to drop. Scots Pine is a very bushy tree. It has extra long blue green needles and good needle retention. For a small location the Serbian Spruce works well, a slender blue/green tree, with delicate foliage. Like the Blue Spruce, with its silvery blue tinged foliage the needles are quite spiky. Others to look out for are the Fraser Fir, another excellent needle retaining tree and the

SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE Unravelling the Mystery
New Extended Hours Appointments OMM are pleased to announce that we are now able to offer prearranged out of hours appointments for clients who may find it difficult to attend during normal working hours. To learn more about this service or to book an appointment please call us on 01525 378177
People often talk about the importance of obtaining a “Clean Break” from their spouse in divorce proceedings, in other words a complete financial cut from each other. Sometimes however, a Clean Break is not appropriate particularly where one of the parties has on-going income needs that they cannot meet on their own. Where this situation arises, consideration should be given as to whether or not that spouse has a claim for Spousal Maintenance, i.e. monthly maintenance paid from one spouse to the other following divorce. There are however many factors to be considered in calculating whether or not there is a claim. The length of the marriage is relevant; where the marriage has been short it is more difficult. The age and working capacity of each party is important, for example where one party is aged 60 and is a low earner they may have more of a need to claim maintenance as opposed to a spouse who is aged 30 and a high earner. After the right to a claim has been
18
established, the spouse with the claim must be able to properly quantify their income needs. This will mean looking at exactly what his or her monthly expenses are and ensuring that in particular housing needs, such as mortgage or rental payments are included. These monthly income needs are then compared to their monthly income received in order to assess the deficit. If however, the other spouse does not have the means to meet the deficit the matter may end there. At this point a similar exercise is carried out so that a proper assessment of the other party’s income can be made. If there is a “surplus” to their needs, the client has proper grounds for a claim. A Spousal Maintenance Order if made, can be limited in time e.g. payable for 2 years or can be for life and in some cases can be a critical factor. WHO KILLED THE BLETCHLEY PARK SPY? Cluedo: Bletchley Park The body of intelligence officer, John Blackcross, has been discovered on the muddy banks of Bletchley Park’s lake. The murderer has been narrowed down to six suspects, all of whom had the means and the motive to commit this foul deed. This is the premise behind Cluedo: Bletchley Park, released in perfect time for Christmas shopping. Players must use their detective skills to work out which suspect took the murder weapon in their hand and cut short the spy’s life. Each suspect is fictitious but the names are based on people who really worked at Bletchley Park during World War Two, including Gordon Welchman, focus of the new exhibition, Gordon Welchman: Bletchley Park's Architect of Ultra Intelligence, who features as Gordon Green. Also under suspicion is Dilly Plum (Codebreaker Dilly Knox) and other individuals who helped the Allies to shorten the war by cracking the enemy’s secret messages. Following the classic Cluedo formula, players must work out where the horrendous crime happened. Did Blackcross lose his life in Block C or the Mansion Ballroom, or perhaps it was in Hut 11, home of the Bombe machines? Several different weapons were on hand to the person with these dark intentions; an Enigma machine, a motorbike and a typewriter are just some of the items that would have been more than enough to stop the spy for all time. Anyone with an interest in Bletchley Park will love this new take on the much-loved family board game. It will be on sale in the gift shop and in the online shop www. bletchleypark.org.uk/shop. Costing £29.99, the game will make the perfect Christmas present.

Switch wine, beer, cocktails and liquers for spirits with a diet mixer - you could save over 100 cals per drink, ask for a long drink to make it last the same. Pick mini items when

shopping such as mince pies and sausage rolls. Think of tasting rather than stuffing. Open top mince pies have less pastry so fewer cals.

Say no thank you to second helpings. You wouldn’t normally eat two meals and two desserts in a restaurant so why make yourself uncomfortable on Christmas Day? At a party pick the chicken kebab sticks, vegetable crudite, lean sliced meat and avoid the brown foods (pastry) to fill you up then pick one thing you simply can’t resist.

Don’t buy just in case! Stock piling nuts, nibbles & chocolates for surprise guests costs a fortune and ends up in you.
Christmas is only one day but if you set out to make it a month of over-indulgence you may have regrets in January. Focus on the social side - friends, family, fun, the food will still be there next year - if you want it!

How To Be A Careful Consumer Online This Christmas
The internet has been with us since the mid 90s. Whilst it has of course brought some fantastic benefits to our lives, it has also created some absolute headaches as well. The fact the entire world is accessible in our homes is a wonderful thing, but it is worth noting that there are lots of internet companies out there, particularly those in other countries that can provide a less than desirable service. So how can you protect yourself against these companies, particularly when making purchases for Christmas? The most important thing
you can do, is to of course avoid buying items from dodgy internet companies in the first place. It sounds simple, but you’d be amazed how many people still find some weird company online that nobody’s ever heard of and hand over hundreds of pounds. They are then amazed when they find themselves out of pocket without the goods they’ve ordered. Therefore, always make sure you research the internet company you are planning to buy from. Find out where they’re based, look for a UK telephone number, check reviews and complaints about them so you know exactly who you’re dealing with. Ensure that their delivery timeframe will ensure your gifts will arrive in plenty of time for Christmas. Make sure you’re paying a sensible price. If a company is selling an item at a ridiculously low price compared to all other companies, there’s usually a reason why. Often the items are fake. Over the years I’d dealt with my fair share of customers who thought they were getting a great deal with ‘Ugg boots’ or ‘GHD hair straighteners’, only to find they’ve bought fakes from a company abroad. You should always pay for goods by credit card but particularly when buying over the internet. It is worth noting that you are not protected by the consumer credit act unless you’re paying over £100, but you’re still more likely to get
www.beelocalmagazine.co.uk
your money back than debit card, cheque or bank transfer. I would go as far as to say you should NEVER buy goods from a company that asks you to transfer money directly into their account. If you decide you’re going to buy Christmas presents from an online auction site like ebay, it is worth familiarising yourself with their safety advice. You generally have fewer rights when buying goods in this way, particularly if they are second hand. Paying by paypal and ensuring that you NEVER collect items in person will go some way to protecting yourself. Only buy from highly rated sellers, based in the UK. It is worth remembering that when you buy brand new items over the internet, you are protected by the distance selling regulations. Because you haven’t had the chance to see the item in the flesh, you have 7 days from delivery to change your mind and send it back for a full refund. Unless the company specifies their returns postage policy, then they are liable for the postage too. Make sure you order things online in plenty of time to allow for this, after all, you don’t want unhappy friends and relatives whose presents are NOT under the tree. by Jonathan Vernon-Smith

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS TO SEE JOE BROWN J
oe Brown MBE hits the road again this Autumn on his first UK outing this year. It’s a major tour that takes him up to Christmas and then on into 2016 for another two months. It’s a long tour, and a tough one, but it could so easily never have happened. And not just this set of dates. Way back in 1960 Joe was on the road as lead guitarist with Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. Joe already had solo hits with People Gotta Talk and Darktown Strutters Ball so Larry Parnes, his then manager, pulled him off the tour to do
his own headline shows. A stroke of luck? Fate? Who knows. One thing’s for sure, it certainly could have saved his life. If Joe’d stuck with the original plan he’d have been in the car crash that tragically cost Eddie his - and the last five and a half decades of JB music would never have happened. Since that very first hit Joe has toured, performed and entertained like the master he is – a man with a musical skill set to be envied and totally at home with the quickfire gag and the effortless repartee that’s now part and parcel of the cheeky chappie.

Letters from Father Christmas J R R Tolkien
The author of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit may seem an unlikely Christmas read but as a father of four every December he wrote illustrated, character filled letters from Father Christmas to his children revealing a softer side. Whilst the writing is of its time, more formal than now, his affection for his children shines through with the cast of elves, goblins and the clumsy polar bear ...It all happened like this: one very
windy day last November my hood blew off and went and stuck on the top of the North Pole ...

You want to question your decisions! Marble Collector by Cecilia Ahern I may be a little biased because I love Cecilia Ahern’s writing but here is another hit by the author of P.S. I Love You. When Sabrina Boggs stumbles upon a mysterious collection of her father’s possessions, she discovers a truth where she never knew there was a lie. The familiar man she grew up with is suddenly a stranger to her. An unexpected break in her monotonous daily routine leaves her just one day to unlock the secrets of the man she thought she knew. A day that unearths memories, stories and people she never knew existed. A day that changes her and those around her forever. The Marble Collector is a thought-provoking novel about how the most ordinary decisions we make can have the most extraordinary consequences for how we live our lives. And how sometimes it’s only by shining on a light on someone else, that you can truly understand yourself. Available: everywhere. £12.99 HarperCollins
