NSPCC Luxury Gift Fair to be held at the Sculpture Gallery, Woburn Abbey on Tuesday, 13th October In Woburn Abbey’s Sculpture Gallery on Tuesday 13th October, Bedfordshire NSPCC is holding a Luxury Gift Fair. All profits will be donated to the NSPCC to support their work in Bedfordshire. There will be over 40 stalls, so whether you are shopping early for Christmas or just to treat yourself, we are sure you will find something to suit you. In addition to the stalls, there will be the gift tree , every ticket promising a gift worth over £10. Susan Lousada, a member of the organising committee said: “This fair has been organised by a group of NSPCC supporters and thanks to the wonderful support of The Duke and Duchess of Bedford, we hope to raise a significant amount of money to support the vital work of the NSPCC and change children’s lives in Bedfordshire”. The funds raised will support the NSPCC’s Schools

Service - a vital service that gives children the tools to protect themselves. Trained volunteers go into schools to talk to children about abuse in all its forms, to educate them in an age appropriate way, giving them the confidence to talk about abuse and how to seek help. We want children to know that if they are worried about themselves or their friends, there is something they can do and someone they can talk to, including contacting ChildLine. Doors open at 9.30am and close at 4.00pm; entry is £5 payable on the day. Light lunches, tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. For more information, please ring the NSPCC Regional office on 0203 763 2302 or email London&east@nspcc.org.uk

community The Bletchley Lions club provided a team of 10 volunteers to carry out garden maintenance at Orchard House, Wolverton. The Plants and Compost was supplied by Dobbies of Bletchley, Orchard House is a rehabilitation and respite care home for the elderly. Work involved clearing the foot paths, cutting back the foliage and generally tidying up. Left untended the paths and overhanging foliage would pose a serious risk to the residents, the garden has improved so residents can use it to recuperate from their stay in hospital . In addition, Trim A Tree pruned the trees and removed a lot of the branches of the trees to make the rooms in the centre and the garden lighter. The funds to enable the Lions to support these projects is donated by the people of Bletchley for which the club is very grateful, 100 % of donations go back to good causes ,we have no administration costs !!! The Lions are also look after a garden in MK Hospital as well.

Recipe

Pumpkin Soup Winter Warmer

Serves 6

Ingredients

Soup 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped 1kg / 2lb 3oz pumpkins or squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks ½ -1 tsp ground cumin 700ml / 24 fl oz vegetable stock or chicken stock 142ml / 5fl oz pot double cream Salt and pepper Garnish 75g / 3oz lardons Chopped chilli (optional) Tiny sage leaves (optional) Note:

Although this recipe will work with Halloween pumpkins they tend to be bred for size rather than flavour. If you want to use a Halloween pumpkin I’d recommend drizzling the pumpkin pieces with olive oil first, mixing them with the cumin and roasting them in the oven on Gas 6 / 200C for 20-30 minutes. Then follow the recipe as before. Roasting brings out the maximum flavour.

Method

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently fry the finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add the peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan with the ground cumin, then carry on cooking for 8-10 mins, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour the vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour the pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil,

then purée with a hand blender. For an extravelvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. While the soup is cooking heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the lardons until deep golden brown. Add some chopped chilli and a few small sage leaves to taste, then cook for a few mins more until they too are tinged with colour. Reheat the soup if needed, season to taste, then serve scattered with the lardon garnish. Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes (If roasting pumpkin add 20-30 minutes)

garden Plant of the Month

er

ctob O n i rden a G r You

Although we had some amazingly warm days this September, autumn is now definitely here, and the days are decidedly shorter. This is the time of change, from summer pinks and blues to the autumn oranges and reds. As the leaves fall, raking them will provide lots of lovely leaf mould for use next year.

GRASSES Maybe not one plant, the grasses really come into their own this time of year. Flower heads dance in the wind and as the weather gets colder provide food for insects. There are grasses for every location, short ones like Festuca glauca, the blue grass, for the front of the border, tall ones such as Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ that can get up to 8 foot tall, Cyperus eragrosis for the bog garden or pond and Stipa tenuissima that looks great in a pot with annuals. Either on their own in or mixed with perennials and shrubs, grasses will give an extra interest and a sense of movement that simply cannot be matched.

Jobs for the garden Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly, bag up or add to compost bins for beautiful leaf mould next year Keep dead- heading and cut back perennials that have died down but leave the more tender ones such as penstemon and salvia until spring. Plant all spring bulbs except tulips which need to wait until next month Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse For those of us with clay soil, now is the perfect time to improve it with

composts and mulch before it becomes too wet or frozen Harvest orchard fruit - store only those in perfect condition. Pick and ripen squash and pumpkin: stand them outdoors on a slatted surface and bring under cover if frosty. Lift remaining maincrop potatoes Prune climbing roses Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf but make sure the soil is well prepared first.

Clinical Negligence Claims: The Facts

What is Clinical Negligence? Clinical negligence is the breach of a medical professional’s duty of care to a patient. In order to succeed with a clinical negligence claim, you must establish that a medical practitioner’s duty of care towards you has been breached and that the breach has caused you an injury or loss. Breach of duty The first step in any clinical negligence claim is to prove that there has been a breach of duty. What this means is that the care provided fell below the standard of a reasonably competent doctor in that particular field of medicine at that particular time. The test of whether the healthcare professional breached the duty of care is whether he or she has failed to meet the standard of a reasonable body of other medical practitioners also skilled in that field. However, if the defendant can show that there is a respectable body of medical practitioners who would have acted in the same way, then the claim will fail.

obvious as it sounds and has to be supported by independent medical opinion. Compensation Once breach of duty and causation has been established and admitted by the Defendant, compensation will be recoverable. This will include ‘General Damages’ which compensate for the pain and suffering experienced and ‘Special Damages’ which compensate for specific past and future financial losses.

Time limits Clinical negligence claims are subject to what is known as a ‘limitation period’. Legal proceedings for adults have to be brought within three years of the date of the injury or the date that you first became aware that the negligent treatment had caused you further injury, known as ‘date of knowledge’. For children, the three year time limit starts to run from their eighteenth birthday, therefore legal proceedings have to be brought before the child reaches Causation age 21. For individuals that lack In addition to proving breach of duty, mental capacity, the time does you must also prove what is known not start ticking until they regain as causation. Could cosmetic dentistry help? As we head towards the festive season there’s a renewed emphasis on the dangers of drink driving. In England and Wales, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine. The punishment for being over the legal alcohol limit when driving is a ban for at least 12 months, and a fine of up to £5,000. Offenders may also be given between three and eleven penalty points. There is also a possibility of imprisonment for up to six months. Those caught drink driving more than once in a 10 year period; will get a driving ban of at least three years It’s not easy to ensure you remain under the limit if you drink alcohol as a variety of factors such as, weight and metabolism can influence results. Even small amounts of alcohol can influence driving, reactions may be slower, vision blurred and it can be more difficult to process information for example. All of these put you at risk.

WOMEN LEADERS AWARDS JUDINGING DAY

Judging day was a true inspiration to our judges. Although they had read the nominations for each of candidates actually meeting them and hearing in more detail their varied and interesting journeys on their career paths gave a whole new perspective. It had been a difficult task to reduce the numbers of original entries from over 110 down to a maximum of five for each category and it was obvious ly from the nominations received that Milton Keynes is host to a high number of Female Entrepreneurs and leaders as well as talented women working in the Community Impact area in either a professional (or) voluntary and (basis or) within a registered charity. iT was disappointing that no entries were received for the Engineering and Construction categories despite knowing that there are many talented women in Milton Keynes who work in that field. It was an international day as several of the finalists (nominees) were either working abroad or on holiday so we managed to touch places such as Crete, Tenerife and both coasts of the United States, technology was our friend and despite a couple of hiccups contact was successful. At the close of our judging day the various panels of judges were

happy with their chosen winners and we now look forward to them being announced at our Gala Dinner at the DoubleTree Hotel on 20th November and we have no doubt that this will be a truly inspiring evening.

welcome changes to health & safety legislation Self-employed - No More Health and Safety? From the 1st October 2015 an estimated 1.7 million selfemployed people will no longer have to comply with health and safety law. This is as a result of The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (General Duties of Self-Employed) (Prescribed Undertakings) Regulations 2015 coming into force. If you’re self-employed before jumping with joy make sure you are exempt as the change doesn’t apply to everyone.

Unsure if it applies to you? Seek professional help from a qualified health and safety consultant Hascat Safety www.hascatsafetyco.uk 01525 630676 we are registed on: The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (http://www.oshcr.org)

What is meant by ‘SelfEmployed’? The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) state “For health and safety purposes, self-employed’ means that you don’t work under a contract of employment and work only for yourself”. You may be self-employed for tax purposes, but this may not be so for health & safety. Please refer to the HMRC ‘Employment Status Guidance for assistance. (https:// www.gov.uk/working-for-yourself/ what-counts-as-self-employed) Am I Exempt? If you work in a ‘Prescribed

Undertaking’ health & safety law still applies. These are:-: Agriculture Asbestos Construction Gas GM Organisms Railway The requirements of Health and safety law will still apply to you if you are self-employed but employ others. There is also a catch-all that if your work poses a risk to the health & safety of others (e.g. members of the public, clients, contractors, etc.) the law still applies to you, The significant, and potentially problematic, consideration for the self-employed is that (if their business is not in one of the prescribed undertakings) they will have to conduct an assessment of whether their undertaking falls within the scope of the catch-all, in that it may pose a risk to others. The individual's liability to prosecution for breaches of health and safety legislation will turn on whether their undertaking falls within this provision or not, so it is imperative to get that assessment right.

Personal cause fundraising campaigns sought from across the UK for the launch of a brand new web platform. Anna Bradley, 13 of Milton Keynes decided to launch the UK’s first ‘personal cause’ crowd funded web platform after her mother was unexpectedly made redundant. Anna looked around online to see if there was any way she could help her mum that didn’t involve the family going any further into debt with a loan. She found there was nothing available, so Anna raided her savings account and the concept Goodwill Giving was born.

A half-day festival of business will be held at Center Parcs Woburn Forest in the autumn. The Beds SME Expo on Tuesday, October 20, will see a range of exhibitors and visitors from across the east of England take part in a range of events from breakfast until lunchtime. Ian Cording, chairman of Beds SME Expo sponsor the Bedfordshire Federation of Small Businesses, said: “Last year's event at Center Parcs was attended by more than 400 visitors from all corners of Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. “October's event will be a real festival of business, right from the B of the Banger over breakfast to the presentation of the East of England Business Champions Awards at lunchtime there will be a host of attractions to keep a steady flow of visitors.” The expo will see an array of exhibitors, including all kinds of businesses who are keen to make new contacts and expand their networks.

“The Beds SME Expo is the perfect opportunity for face to face networking with like minded business owners. Expos are targeted, relevant and are considered a key facet of SME marketing strategies.” Businesses requiring more information should call Natasha on 01908 542 720 or visit the website www. bedssmeexpo.co.uk and search for #BedsSMEExpo on Twitter.

Personal cause crowd funding is a new offering to the UK, but involves individuals utilising the upcoming web platform to set up personal fundraising campaigns. The platform will integrate with Facebook and Twitter to allow sharing of campaign information and a ‘Fund-o-Meter’ will keep visitors and fundraisers up to date on the progress of the campaign. Updates, videos and images can be loaded and a campaign can be nominated by friends and family or by the individual facing the challenge. The premise for a campaign can be as broad as the challenges of daily life can bring but some examples would be: • An elderly couple who need a heating system in their home before winter. • A child who hopes to buy text books or school uniform but can’t afford it. • A disabled person whose house desperately needs ramps and support rails. Anna is an energetic member of her community and school. She is a sports captain, anti-bullying ambassador and no stranger to enthusiastically bringing about change in her environments. She is now taking on the entire country. email: customerservice@goodwillgiving.co.uk Facebook page: goodwillgiving www.goodwillgiving.co.uk

Women’s fashion retailer Rosa Cristini of SoYou Boutique in Leighton Buzzard says ‘Women of a certain age get stuck in a rut when it comes to colour, but as we age we must update and try new things to suit our changing appearance. Bad habits, such as sticking to one colour, which in our late 20’s and early 30’s worked for us, can age us Helen Mirren in our forties and fifties.' Rocking Red 'Red is a colour women hesitate over wearing, often I hear ‘is it too much?’ ‘Time and time again clients come to me and rarely am I asked if I stock red dresses, yet when our ladies step out of their comfort zone and try on a red dress in the right hue for their skin tone they are amazed at how it makes them feel and equally how well it suits them, it bestows a radiance that knocks years of their appearance.’ Research shows that when worn by a woman, red stimulates interest and passion in men, furthermore, numerous studies have found that women wearing red in a series of photographs presented to participants are rated as more attractive. Indeed, women have been donning red lipstick as far back as 10,000 B.C, Cleopatra, the alpha female of her time, crushed beetles and ants to get just the right shade for her lips, clearly a woman way ahead of her times. Rosa said ‘Why shouldn’t women dress to impress, red is a colour that not only effects people around the wearer but perhaps most importantly the woman wearing the red. Wearing red makes a woman feel confident, sexy, powerful and vibrant.’ ‘With winter drawing near and Christmas just round the corner now is the perfect time to invest in red for your wardrobe.’ Rosa offers a free one to one personal shopping experience to all clients at her boutique in 28a Market Square, Leighton Buzzard. Dresses size 6 to 24, and to complete the look tights stockings, hold-ups, scarves, 25 handbags and jewellry.

time to talk about why you are growing a beard. Word soon gets round and not only does that mean more funds are raised but also important awareness of the disease, which can help to save lives.

community News from Appledown Did you know that the average man will spend 6 months of his life shaving?

This is Edmure Tully, a one year old crossbreed who is smaller than a Labrador. Edmure is a playful and affectionate young dog who needs an active home with owners willing to carry on with his training. He is good with other dogs and travels well. He cannot be rehomed in Dacorum. If you feel you could offer Edmure or any of our other dogs a loving and secure home please call in at the kennels any day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Our staff are happy to offer advice and information. Please note that we have restrictions on rehoming dogs to families with children under 7 years of age. Full details of the rehoming process can be found on our website or call the kennels. That’s a lot of time he could be putting towards doing something else productive such as not shaving for a month whilst raising money for charity. Since 2011, the charity Beating Bowel Cancer has been encouraging men to grow a beard throughout the month of December and to raise money so they can support the growing number of people affected by bowel cancer. In 2014 over 3,000 men ditched their morning shave and got involved with the campaign, but this year the charity says they want to be bigger and better. Beating Bowel Cancer is looking to hit the half a million pound mark, and they ask that each participant raises a minimum of £100. The money raised will help them fund a range of vital services that give people with bowel cancer help, hope and reassurance. Beards can be a bit itchy at the beginning and you might get a few crumbs taking permanent residence on your face, but the charity say that it’s all worth it in the end. Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer but it doesn’t have to be that way as it has a very high rate of survival if caught early. The charity says when people are curious and ask questions about your new facial fuzz, that’s your

Mark Flannagan, Chief Executive of Beating Bowel Cancer, said “Talking about bums and poo can be embarrassing for many people so the symptoms of bowel cancer are less well known than many other cancers. This means people are often diagnosed at a late stage when the disease is far more difficult to treat.” Scott Smith, from Essex was diagnosed with bowel cancer eight years ago. Scott’s cancer was caught early and because it hadn’t spread he didn’t need aggressive treatment like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Scott said he likes taking part in Decembeard because he feels that it’s a clever way of raising awareness and says “growing a beard is such a conversation starter when people are so used to seeing you clean shaven.” Scott states that he is living proof that early diagnosis saves lives and he wants to do everything he can to encourage others to be vigilant and spread the word. If, like Scott, you would like to get involved, check out the Decembeard website at www.decembeard.org. You can also follow the campaign on Twitter and Instagram @decembeard_uk. Gloriously Gluten Free by Susanna Booth “All the recipes are simple, familiar, traditional recipes we all know and love. It doesn’t use fancy ingredients; all of them are available in most supermarkets. It’s a perfect book for anyone new to gluten-free cooking but those with decades of experience will also find it incredibly useful.” Review by Diana Murphy, founder of The Gluten Free Centre

An inspiring story of family devotion and a personal search for proof of life after death. One moment creating tears of laughter and the next sadness. She, like many, has faced her mother’s battle with cancer, her father’s dementia, her son’s learning disabilities and her own ill health. Her mother, raised by Salvation Army parents, knew she would go to heaven and together they made a plan to prove that death was not the end and the spirit continued. The book takes us on a journey with Wendy as she seeks comfort, peace, strength and proof.

The Night Sky October & November 2015 Discover the Andromeda Galaxy Tonight:

Ever seen a distant galaxy beyond our own? Now’s your chance! The Andromeda Galaxy is so far away that light from the stars inside it takes 2.5 million years to cross the void of space to Earth. Yet even at this great distance Andromeda is easy to find with binoculars. Look up high to your south mid-evening for a giant square pattern of stars, and an arc of bright stars running out left. From the square move along this arc by one star and lift your binoculars slightly upwards until you see an oval patch of grey light. This is the glow from a trillion stars that make up the Andromeda Galaxy.

See the ISS from Bedfordshire: Mid-October sees the International Space Station (ISS) sail over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a con-

stant bright white light travelling west to east. It’ll be brighter than any other star in the sky, and won’t flash. View it from Thursday 8 October to Monday 19 October between 7pm – 8:30pm.

Watch the Orionids and Leonids Meteor Showers: This autumn sees a double peak in meteor

activity across Bedfordshire. The first peak is on the night of 21-22 October when up to 30 shooting stars per hour from the Orionids may be seen between midnight and dawn. The night of 17-18 November sees the return of the Leonids. Expect 20+ shooting stars per hour after dark. Image: The Andromeda Galaxy by Torben Bjorn Hansen
