I have been engaged in the design industry for years and still find myself full of enthusiasm. My motivation of creativity comes from foresight, perseverance, pursuit of perfection and quality enhancement. As I always emphasize, a sensible design should comprise of reasonable space utilization, smooth flow intercourse and integrated function and space. All these factors are closely tied and carried through from exterior to interior. They are the precondition of a successful design to make proper use of the entire space. Sensibility is also something unneglectable besides sense. Humanized manipulation is counted as a crucial consideration of great necessity. I pay much attention to factors such as proportional lines, bold match of colors, interesting and sensitive architectural structures. Incarnation of living is certainly something really important. Those elements often appear in my works are distinctive color mix, sound atmosphere and striking effects reacted by aesthetics and functionality which express different ideas and enable richness and context of the space. People asked about my design style, usually I am not able to give a good answer because I do not have a fixed style, and style is not what concerns me most in my works. Beauty and advantage exists in every form and style at all times. It is a designer’s responsibility to provide solutions for various ambiences and levels according to specific site features, architectural conditions and rationalized functionality per the clients’ requests. I always mention that I am a designer rather than an artist. My creation is not self-centered, instead, I would prefer probe and retrospect to the rationality of my design as well as users’ acceptability and people’s reactions from other angles with a goal of suiting both refined and popular tastes. Not being an artist but possessing all the necessary qualities, especially developing aesthetics knowledge and developing tastes to a higher level unceasingly.

PAL CONCEPT

Each project I designed is in pursuit of the same belief — harmony and comfort. The requirements of human living are aimed at continuously upgrading the living standard and leading a happy life. Comfort is the primary factor for working, entertainment, relaxation and environment, therefore comfort, durability and tranquility are the design mottos for luxury houses, showflats, shops, hotels and clubhouses in a diversity of styles such as modernism, classicalism, minimalism as well as luxuries. I have been so busy for years with all the upcoming projects and never had a chance to take a break. Yet many friends and clients are expecting my monograph all along, for which I finally made up my mind to create this book. It so happened that many projects committed in recent years are Clubhouses, which resulted in 16 clubhouses being collected in my first monograph. At the clients’ varying requests, each design has its own identity, individual character and function owing to respective architecture and positioning. It is my hope that my dear counterparts and readers can gain something useful from this book. My acknowledgement is to my family, friends, superiors and subordinates who have been working and growing with me all the way, this book can never be presented without your help. This book is dedicated to those who stand by me always. Patrick Leung

TEN DESIGN ELEMENTS

A great deal of details should be taken into consideration during the process of design to achieve a balance between functionality and aestheticism. From layout to mural, every step plays an important role and closely ties in with each other. How can all elements be coordinated to form a whole as well as bring forth a style or idea? This is what designers have been exploring. In short, there are ten elements that give interests and artistry to the space: Ceiling Treatment Sky Light Floor Pattern Architectural Feature Artistic Wall Screen / Divider Staircase Lighting Fixture Sculpture / Object Painting

230

231

Ceiling Treatment

A ceiling is to conceal awkward and untidy pipes, mechanical and electrical structures; it is an ornamental element creating pleasant and tidy effect. There are a diversity of shapes and materials for the ceiling, usually working with lighting element to produce a certain atmosphere.

232

233

Sky Light

Skylight is designed to introduce outdoor sunlight. In the daytime, the exterior is always brighter than the interior. Bridging the exterior with the interior, it functions with form and compartment on the ceiling. Viewing from the indoors and outdoors can have totally different atmospheres. At night, a skylight is so distinctive that lamps are counted on to create the desired ambience.

234

235

Floor Pattern

Floor is a vast space and an element of creative style. They are decorative layers in lobbies, corridors and passages. Pattern, texture, material and colour work together to visually influence the environment and ambience and attachs much importance to the holistic design.

236

237

Architectural Feature

The elements of building exterior always inspire interior designs, which include decorative wall beams, pillars and ceiling. The shape might vary greatly and mostly represents a strong character. Sometimes architectural structure is utilized as a significant symbol to create an unique approach. Geometrical elements and reasonable proportions are the main concerns.

238

239

Artistic Wall

Decoration of walls may achieve endless variations, while colour, texture, material and shape are all factors taken into account. Advanced technology nowadays provides numerous artificial cladding materials for selection; natural materials such as wood and stone are also of a wide variety. With a proper artistic taste, the effect of wall decoration is likely to go beyond all expectations.

240

241

Screen / Divider

Being a translucent partition, a screen subtly separates two spaces with many choices ranging from pattern, form, colour and material. Pattern brings out a certain style and influences the entire effect. The design of screen is highly attended to in the history of Oriental and Western architectures. A good screen is full of artistic colour and worthy of collection.

242

243

Staircase

Staircase which connects the upper and lower floors carries a great responsibility. Aesthetically, staircase is most fluid corresponding to the given condition of the architecture. Stairs in special shape is like a sculpture. It is crucial for the design to meet the requirements of safety, functionality and applicable regulations, representing a favourable combination of authenticity and functionality.

244

245

Lighting brightens the space and can easily attract people's attention. Lighting design is like an illuminated sculpture with clear and distinct lines and shapes. Being an effective element for atmosphere, its materials and shapes are mutable to suit different environments.

lighting fixture

246

247

Sculpture / Art Object

Art object highlights the interior and enhances vitality; it adds artistic touch and flavour. Sculpture in public space also reflects the taste of its owner and operator while enhancing the image. Sculptures designed by masters are both valuable and worth collecting.

248

249

Painting

Similar to a sculpture, painting is the soul of interior space supporting each other like flower and leaf. It infuses interest as well as character into the space. A good painting is undoubtedly worth investing, therefore, it has been a hobby for many to collect famous paintings. We always design a suitable background for paintings that leads to an obvious and satisfactory result.
