Paul Steelman is an expert in entertainment architecture. His works include the Mirage, MGM, Harrah’s Caesars, Hard Rock as well as the newly opened Las Vegas Sands in Macau. With years of experience in conceptualizing and designing for casinos worldwide, Steelman has accumulated knowledge in combining the right ingredients to hit the jackpot for a successful casino. Here is Steelman’s recipe in making the must-see-must-come-back casino.

The Master Plan The new designs for the millennial group are designs like the Sands Macau. Unlike casinos in Vegas where massive land is taken up and architectural designs can extend horizontally, Sands Macau is limited in space. With this being the parameter, S t e e l m a n c re a t e d a ‘ s t a d i u m c a s i n o ’ b y s t a c k i n g u p t h e activities in vertical space. Steelman was able to create interior spaciousness, and this spatial consideration, he believes, will be the upcoming iconic architecture. ‘The casino floor has to be the centre of actions,’ says Steelman, but everything else around it is critical too, ‘we must cater for a range of functions, with proper number of seats and sizes. It is important to have a relationship with the back of the house as well. ‘The back of the house in Sands takes sufficient space and is even equipped with escalators for staff.’ According to Steelman, to make the employees enjoy working in such an environment means that there are smiles on their faces and that is crucial for fine service to customers. ‘On the other hand, we have to be smart entrepreneurs. Exterior architecture of casinos gets you in the door just once; it is the interior that lures retur n visits, so we have to temper that.’ Steelman remarks. The trick is to create an exterior interesting enough to invite the customers in, and yet not excessively astounding so that the interior suffers. This is why casinos are renovated every seven to ten years in order to give customers a refreshing and unique experience. Flexibility, then, is the key to casino design.

Rules of the Game: Successful Money Vacuums In the Making To conjure the magic inside the casino, it should be able to achieve these: an overwhelming ‘wow’ at the lobby; customers have feelings of empowerment and confidence to beat the casino; and a comfortable atmosphere to keep them as long as possible. To create these feelings, lighting plays a crucial role. ‘We do not want to build the casinos in blues or cool lights, we want people to feel warm,’ advises Steelman. Alternatively, golden, dramatic lights put a glow on patrons’ faces making them more attractive and creating a feeling of warmth. The designer of the lighting at Sands Macau, who is also responsible for the Cirque du Soleil lighting, was able to create a theatrical effect, ‘we want the customers to feel but not see ... like a magic trick’.

Nowadays computers do the magic. Digital enhancement is able t o re c re a t e a n y a t m o s p h e re , i m m e r s i n g t h e c u s t o m e r i n a specific surrounding to produce a mood, ‘We can make it more romantic, we can have a spring day in winter, we can have C h i n e s e N e w Ye a r. . . ’ t h e l i s t g o e s o n . T h e u s e o f d i g i t a l technology can also emphasize the jackpot, reminding customers that he can be the next winner. Digital technology will certainly be the up-and-coming trend in casino architecture. Feng Shui Manuals - An Architectural Bible The architectural design of the New Sands Macau Casino puts a lot of emphasis on feng shui. Steelman constructed fountains which means wealth in feng shui layout. He also applied black stones and gold on the exterior, and faced the building towards the northeast orientation. Asked if feng shui always constitute

He believes that good feng shui leads to good airflow, and of course, good fortune, ‘Believe it or not, casinos like winners’.

Remember - Casinos Are That Hot Date You Can’t Get Enough Of After all, casino architectures are ‘designed for profit’. Casinos are heavily dependent on design as an attraction tool. Needless to say, the success of a casino and its design is tightly intertwined. ‘The right mix of capital, design, and programming will bring about a successful project,’ Steelman suggested. A successful casino will make the customer long for his next visit. Steelman likens it to a date you remember and that you have a desire to repeat. Steelman jokingly said that his designs try to appeal to the woman customers, because in the end, they will convince their dates to visit the casino with them. ‘A lot of the curves and circular shapes I use are inspired by females. I spend a lot of time dreaming of those curves.’ Perhaps for Steelman, casinos are his hot dates.

In New York, the definition of a gym is increasingly delineated by its brand identity and the attendant buzz of same heard on the street. Only second now to L.A. in it’s obsession with re-inventing the gym as a life-style choice and prime accessory to one’s social calendar, the Manhattan gym has undergone a rapid transformation to serve the needs of a discriminating clientele with high expectations and a keen eye for aesthetics and design details. On the cusp of the west village in lower Manhattan, Robin Brown found a second floor space with 20,000 sq ft and the ultimate NY rarity - an open roof just above the second floor. Ms. Brown, a fitness and nutrition devotee with a holistic approach to wellness, decided to explore an alternative spa experience with the creation of her first gym, Clay. For designer Brent Capron, the name truly did say it all. “A lot of design was driven by understated detailing, natural greens and browns, no primary colours or loud music.” Materials with a wonderful, cool hand were sought out; the tactile experience and interplay of textures and scale were selected and specified. The motivation for the members would be: enjoy the space, but do not linger in pampering surroundings. The difficult achievement of luxury with minimal, nearly monastic interiors was achieved by the paring down of both the palette and the limited range of colour and pattern in the entire interior finishes. The result of the pared-down, yet luxe materials and finishes set the tone for a Zen-like experience throughout Clay.

Abundant sunshine, another Manhattan rarity, became a key element in exposing the space and creating a tranquil, yet enervating environment for building up a sweat. Skylights were cut into the second floor roof, creating pools of light that delineates the zones and draws one in to explore the far corners and exercise equipment options. Sensory delights abound in a very quiet way. A gas-lit fireplace, cut as a low horizontal band into synthetic grey stone, sits calmly within a recessed pit by the lobby. Echoing the 70’s, but beautifully updated for the 21st century; this generous shrine of grey-on-grey sets the tone for Clay and welcomes guests into an unusual, yet highly functional gym. The exposed roof deck allowed for the creation of an outdoor lounge, complete with a weatherproof pool table and chaise lounges for sunbathing. Cafe tables and chairs provide for alfresco dining, with snug little wooden structures, discreetly curtained off, acting as cabanas for the complete tar beach experience. pqraflp=^o`efqb`qrob

Located at the Three on the Bund, designer Alan Chan’s overall concept for Evian Spa is built on the personality and characteristics of Evian water - a symbol of purity and good health.

A simple and minimal colour scheme of pure white throughout the common area and corridors projects a feeling of purity and simplicity. With water channels built on both sides of the corridors, the rooms appear to be floating on water, echoing perfectly with the Latin word ‘spa’ which means ‘heaven on water’.

The moment you walk into the reception area, you are embraced by a pool of sunlight penetrated through the high atrium. Inspired by the Japanese Zen gardens in Kyoto, Japan, there are six pieces of natural rocks placed on a sand-garden-like carpet in the reception area. These rocks not only create a natural setting reflecting the philosophy of Evian Spa, they also symbolize another design concept of the spa based on the six senses in Buddhism: the eye, the nose, the ear, the tongue, the body and the mind. Evian Spa is a place where you will experience the process of purification, both mentally and physically.

bsf^k=pm^

The interior of the 15 private treatment rooms are made of various natural materials, such as bamboo, jade, stone, and abstract Chinese ink paintings, etc. Besides natural elements, circular forms are commonly found on carpets, doors, and walls as well as the Evian Spa logo which symbolize completeness and eternity in Chinese philosophy in line with the holistic value of Evian Spa.

Valmont Spa, combining historical therapies and modern technologies to implement its skincare services, opened its flagship shop in Hong Kong. Rooted from the serene environment of Verbier, Switzerland, Valmont emphasizes natural ingredients in its products. Interior designer, R a y m o n d S i n , re - c r e a t e d t h e t r a n q u i l atmosphere of Switzerland and at the same time, suggesting the historical background of Valmont in this two-storey spa facility. The choice of materials and colours reflect the theme. The limestone flooring and combed-like walls give a rough and rocky texture. Wood is one of the main materials used in the spa. It assimilates to the natural surroundings and provides a range of warm, earthy colours. Lighting in each individual room imitates natural light, thus producing an outdoors environment. The result is to offer a relaxing and comforting atmosphere for a time of revitalization. Raymond’s design emphasizes on linear flow and continuation. Many of his furniture and designs connect from all four corners of the wall, such as a solid ribbon that attaches from the ceiling to the floor and serves as a table. The effect is to create visual illusion and therefore a seemingly larger space. The use of mix and o^vp=abpfdk=iqa

match square and circular fixtures and furniture is another way of c re a t i n g d i ff e re n t i a t i o n a n d increasing space. He also manipulated the lighting to create a greater spatial depth. Raymond said that one of the challenges in designing the spa was to produce a continuation between the two levels and creating a bigger scale in the limited area. By leading guests through the staircase, the connectivity in his design is able to raise spatial efficiency. The zoning and positioning of the spa displays an unconventional and innovative approach. Unlike typical layout, the shower rooms and washrooms are located at the centre of the spa instead of the corners. This enhances accessibility. Furthermore, the circular shape of these rooms enhances the separation of circulation flow, which again, raises the practicality of the space.

The facility consists of two doublestorey buildings connected by a belt-like structure. One building comprises spa facilities for men, ladies and the physically handicapped, and the other consists of an office and other common space. ‘Rooftecture’ is a coined word that signifies the architectural style of creating an integrated building by a belt-like structure. This unique structure is not freestanding, it is combined with a steel skeleton. Rooftecture attaches necessary parts of the two blocks to form the integrated building provided with various external and internal spaces.

artificial foundation for the men’s bathroom on this protruded area. The roof and ceiling are designed for natural ventilation allowing fresh air to circulate. The common space, including the office and entrance, is placed on the north side of the building facing the road. Constructed with considerations of the topographical constraints of the site, the two blocks are joined together by a corridor, and the buildings intersect with each other on the extension of entrance and lounge area. Accordingly, the two buildings constitute the integrated combination structure by partial sharing of space which allows the creation of additional spaces.

O4 no.8 Salon is located at an elliptical business complex in Central. Occupying 3,000 sq ft, it offers two VIP rooms plus a seating capacity for 23 customers. Contrary to the popular minimal design, Henry Ng, project designer, has picked the elements of classic elegance into the design and has created a contemporary, yet refined environment for the Salon. Henry named it the ‘Modern Classics’. Stepping out of the elevator, customers are greeted by a 4-metre long reception counter made of green clear glass. The reception counter neatly displays attractive and colourful wigs created by the salon’s stylists. These displays not only reinforce the unique image of the salon, they also project a sense of belonging amongst employees. The lighting at the reception area is a unique feature of crystal chandeliers encircled by a metallic mesh. With the upper part of the wall decorated with pieces of Swarovski crystal and the eye-catching red sofa at the waiting area, the use of these bold colours - red, green and gold impresses every customer who enters the reception area with the lively heart-beat of the salon.

Henry has invited graphic designer Kelvin to put in special mosaic-like wallpaper in the hair styling area. Together with mono-colour rose patterns, the classical theme is reinforced. In addition, the glossy silver decorative lamps that shed light on the rectangular mirrors, the gold and silver strokes painted on the cement floor have created a unique flavour for the place. There are two major challenges for this project. Being located at an elliptical business complex with several big columns, and windows on almost every side, the requirement for privacy in the hair styling area conflicts with the desirable seating capacity. Besides, the complex is catered for regular offices which makes it a challenge to supply adequate water and air-conditioning for a busy salon. However, all these difficulties were successfully overcome; and the designers have re-arranged the water supply and airconditioning systems.

Red and white are the basic colours applied in the salon. Their unique contemporary characteristics stimulate sensitivities and have created atmospheres either active or peaceful, care free or elegant. There is no elaborated designs. The simple layout is coordinated with various colours and lightings to cultivate a completely new experience of hairstyling full of creativity and imaginations.

The translucency of glass windows and the open ceiling plan enhance the spatial quality. In the daytime, the huge windows permit natural sunlight to come indoors. At night, the light bands hidden on the ceiling and inner edges of mirrors light up the place through the walls, mirrors and red glass. These lights create different shades, concentrated and radiated in effect.

Reception area is connnected to the lounge by extending the structural wall painted in red to meet the white low partition, which encloses a place for rest. Hairstyling area is the most important section in the entire concept. It is comfortable, spacious, and clean, making it compatible to a business class air flight. Another highlight is the shampoo area where appropriate lighting and privacy are needed. The designer has used a curved partition to separate the colouring and shampoo areas. The seclusive environment and relaxing music has made shampooing an enjoyable time for customers.

Besides visual impact, Red Point also offers contemporary music and light aromas to its customers who can also surf the internet while having their hair dressed. Red Point has broken through the conventional business mode of a salon to move into a total concept of image design. Hairstyling is an ancient industry. It is part of personal taste and image building in the contemporary lifestyle. The design of Red Point is in line with this entirely new concept, detailed and upbeat, enabling the corporate to stand out amongst competitors as a cutting edge forerunner.

‘qv:qv’ is the abbreviation of two Latin words - quod vide and quantum vis. The first qv means can be referenced, the second means as much as you want. The use of ‘qv:qv’ as a shop name implies being ‘as pretty as you want to be’. QV also stands for quality and value. Hairdressing is an important part of life in today’s world. However, in the traditional Chinese society, it is a mere necessity. There are only few who would raise it to the level of contemporary culture. To make hairstyling part of the culture is the major challenge of the industry. The high-tech design of the ‘qv:qv Hair & Skin Care Centre’ has added modern charisma to this ancient industry. From the spotless mirrors to the frosted glass floor, colours used are light and simple, filling the hall with a touch of high-tech. Music played in the salon is modern Argentina Tango which intermingled with the strong

aroma of Italian coffee. To add more to a contemporary culture, state-ofthe-art hairstyling equipment is neatly placed. The equipment include hot scissors (its blades can reach 150 degrees to seal the hair that has been cut to avoid splitting), hair dryers monitored by micro-computers, and notebook computers for customers to send/receive emails or just read the internet news while having their hair dressed. The owner of ‘qv:qv Hair & Skin Care Centre’ believes that with China joining WTO and the gradual globalization, the future trend will call for an entirely different lifestyle. Hairdressing will play a vital role in the emergence of this brand new civilization. Therefore, it should not only be packaged in an international facet, the services should also be raised to reflect its identity. As a result, the salon has expressed its respect to human beings in every possible way. Its interior design matches the basic concept of the salon, that harmony between individuals and the environment overrides any desire for absurdity and over the wall designs. ‘qv:qv Hair & Skin Care Centre’ is not only a contemporary hairstyling salon, it is also a multi-function club and a place to enjoy leisure time. ^o`efjbaf^

Bruun’s Galleri is a shopping mall designed by Danish architects SHL (Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen) in collaboration with 3xNielsen, in which one can find a multiplex cinema with a fancy lounge created by CEBRA. The lounge is composed of two floors with a titled roof. This elongated foyer is dedicated to the flow of audiences who want to hang out before and after movies. In order to make room for hanging out, several light cylinders are placed to form ‘a forest of glowing tree trunks’. The ‘trunks’ can be seen on both the upper and lower level, and they seem to be penetrating through the floor slab. They are of different sizes, colours and light intensity to serve various purposes in these four zones: the colonnade for posters, the meeting point, the ‘forest’ with tables and the halos of VIP facilities.

On the lower floor adjacent to the main stairs that connect to the shopping mall, there are huge columns with posters displayed at eye level. They are light cylinders which also act as advertising tools so that everyone who goes to the cinema can see what will be coming up in the next change. The meeting point is the central spot with a large, modern chandelier where people gather. It changes `b_o^

colour all the time to match the blockbuster being shown. For example, when ‘Matrix’ was being played, it was green; and when it was running ‘Finding Nemo’, blue was applied. In the ‘forest’, one will feel being surrounded and embraced. The light cylinders appeared to be randomly placed - just like trees in the forests - but in fact, they were designed with care to meet the strict demands of fire regulations and other statutory requirements. People may stop to have a drink or chitchat with friends in this area. Supported by mobile furniture, the rear of the upper foyer is basically an empty space for a wide range of activities to take place. The lounge is dimly lit as in midnight - this is appropriate for movies. Its cozy ambience encourages people to meet and hang around. Mikkel Frost, one of the designers of this project, said: ‘the picture we had in mind during the designing stage was bonfire glowing in the dark. Denmark has long nights in the winter. It is a tradition for people to use candlelight. Here, the same kind of warm glow in the dark and cold night is created, a bit like Halloween pumpkin heads in the snow...’

[CINE]tecture is playful... When the first time Michael Tsang, director of AGC Design Ltd, visited the site, he was profoundly impressed by the distinctive form of the foyer: it is long and narrow, slightly curved with high headroom. This ‘tunnel-like’ space is so dramatically set out that it makes people associate it with scenes of many sci-fi movies like Batman’s cave and the secret station of Zion in ‘Matrix’. ‘How about designing a [CINE]tecture that is both mysterious and romantic for the digital generation?’ he asked himself. Consequently, an interior design packed with futuristic tone is displayed in the cinema. Most of the foyer space is defined by a series of specially designed vault-form aluminium strips, running longitudinally throughout the entire upper half of the foyer. Each strip is identified precisely with its own set of dimension and character for manufacturing purposes, which can only be generated from today’s advanced computer technology. The curvilinear ceiling rib structure is set off by programmed lighting which changes in colour and rotation to enhance the overall effect. At eye level, back-lit fixtures are installed behind both glazed panels (at the concession and concierge counter) and polycarbonate sheets which are

^o`efjbaf^

Karatheque Entertainment Club is located at Renaissance Harbour View Hotel with a history of 10 years’ karaoke business. The intent of the complete renovation is to upgrade its market position to a higher class entertainment resource for the affluent community. There were eleven VIP rooms of different sizes in the original layout. These rooms are now revamped and furnished with different themes by interior designer, Michael Chan. The most outstanding and attractive designs amongst those include the room with Chinese classical paintings on the wall, the other with pictures of strong colonial influence, last but not least, the one with wallpapers of the 60’s. Different though the themes are, each individual room carries the same designing concept - the mix and match of hard and soft materials. When the hard fuses with the soft, they bring out new dynamics. And with the use of different materials in each room, they present a combination of diverse styles and ambience so unique in character. Imagine the brass bead blinds matching with fair face concrete, the beige velvet curtains going with s y n t h e t i c l e a t h e re t t e , a n d t h e blending of mirrors and optical fibre. They are only some of the typical examples. Adjacent to the entrance hallway is Room 3. It is revamped with semi-translucent drapes and glass which both reflect and bring in lights badb=^o`efqb`qp=iqa

and activities. Guests in the room can see obscurely people coming in and out while guests at the lobby can feel the activities going on inside the room. It brings out life and motion to the entire place. The largest VIP room is Room 1 with a square footage of 400. The room, which is ideal for bigger parties of 20 to 30 people, has a DJ booth and a private bathroom. Besides movable furniture, the couch against the wall is carved in such a way that it looks as if it comes out from the wall. At the centre of the club connecting to the entrance hallway is the lobby. The designer centralized all the equipment which includes the projector and display unit on a curved feature wall to create an admirable environment. The lighting fixture made of soji paper project a warm and cozy ambience for the place.

Star Box KTV, originated from Taiwan, is a highly influential entertainment and leisure establishment. Its Beijing outlet allowed the designers to re-package the KTV in a soft and peaceful tone instead of its classic magnificence. The lobby occupies over 500 sq m, is a comfortable waiting area for customers. In order to avoid looseness and emptiness, the designers created an interactive curve line on both the floor and ceiling to tie up every corner of the lobby. The curve line, which dances with the music, is like the Milky Way that stretches into the sky, breaks through the silence to bring life and energy. The ‘milky way’ starts from the star spangled ‘round sky’ - the ceiling which is decorated with pieces of pq^o=_lu=hqsI

crystal and lit by optical fibre. With sparkling effects, it resembles the twinkling stars in the late evening. Following the ‘milky way’, the space opens up in front of you. At the end of the lobby is a clear, running water screen. The dripping water and music mix into a delightful harmony that refreshes and energizes every customer that comes through the door. The lobby allows people to experience the charisma of light, sound, and shade. The designers believe that ‘magnificent decoration can only bring a temporary visual impact, while something that can strike the hearts will leave a permanent impression’. In order to achieve this, light pastel is employed as background colour. An example is the dark brown draperies at the wall of the rest area. They not only bring out, but also blend in the elements of music and shade.

It is a completely different visual impact to open the door into the performance hall. The hot red background stimulates the passion inside people to perform in this dramatic ‘stage’. The metallic silver wall panel at the bar infuses the lights and colours while the silver windflowers on the bar counter sparkle with the beat. The soul of the design is at the stairwell that links up the four-storey complex. 400 pieces of crystal clear fibre light are dangled from the top. Resembling the ‘comet rain’, its ever-changing colours are reflected and echoed into the endless space through the mirrors. This silent rhythm, together with the background music, attracts the attention of customers that pass through the stairs; and embraces them in a delightful environment. A long and elegant hallway leads to each and every party room. The party rooms have ten distinct themes, some take customers into the

unlimited universe, some bring memories into the past and some are contemporary and upbeat. Star Box KTV’s design is detailed, but never loses its beauty. It represents a brand new entertainment complex. The designers hope to ‘bring depth into the design, give it life and passion, and provide customers with space for imagination and coziness.’

The program called for integrating a new 80,000 sq ft first-class gaming casino and a 572-guestroom hotel with an existing theatre, casino and banquet facilities. The client asked for an icon that could be seen from miles away. The design with giant moon suspended above the earth on the spiraling hotel creates a sense of mounting excitement as visitors approach. The hotel is a spiraling structure that starts lower at one end, winds around the casino area and gradually grows taller on the other end, peaking with an eighty-foot diameter brightly lit moon-like sphere that sits 310 feet above ground. The sphere contains a lounge, restaurant `el`q^t=dliabk=jllk=`^pfkl=C=obploq=elqbi

and an observation deck from which to view the surrounding landscape. The hotel building is in clay-coloured red to symbolize the earth, while cascading curtains of water surround the base of the building with an aquascape of five water features spraying water 75 feet in the air at the resort entrance. The pattern formed by the irregular window placement adds interest to the facade. The circle, important to the heritage of the tribe, became a crucial design element throughout. The circular gaming room is at the centre while a circular path around it contains elevator lobbies, a health spa, restaurants, bars and other entertainment options - all overlooking the main casino floor below. A 100-seat show bar is visible to the entire gaming floor, allowing patrons to have a sense of direction often difficult to determine in casinos of such large scale.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation retained Reich + Petch Architects Inc and Forrec Ltd to design the province’s newest charity casino - the Thousand Islands. As highway architecture, the Casino features bold, striking lines with motifs fashioned from the classic automobile designs of the 50’s. Interior design elements that represent in an abstract manner the landmarks, topography and materials from this unique region of Ontario, are used to establish the casino as a local landmark - a place that provides a familiar ambience for local patrons and a comfortable, fun and entertaining experience for tourists. obf`e=H=mbq`e=abpfdk=fkqbok^qflk^i

Thousand Islands Charity Casino is designed to attract both the tourist and local visitors while being sensitive to the local communities and the environmental conditions of the site. The character of the Thousand Islands Region is conveyed and reinforced through the maintaining of the existing wetland area, the use of indigenous plants and the incorporation of rock outcroppings into the site design. Attracting patrons from the rapid traffic of the highways surrounding the site required the development of a high profile building design that could capture and entice the imagination and interest of the public. Using the sleek design elements of classic vehicles powerboats and cars - the casino has a bold sweeping curve ‘ribbon’ extending continuously from the ‘tail fins’ to the distinctive hood or prow, complete with the ‘hood ornament’ that features the Casino sign. This element provides the porte-cochere for the Casino and becomes the main signage feature. The corner piers of the Casino reinforce the sleek and bold design while the silver quality of the main building walls, together

with their accent stripes, create a glistening presentation of the building. Set against this dynamic background, the Casino’s entrance pavilion provides a transparent lobby on a stone backdrop. The glow of the lobby and the bright lighting of the Casino make its night appearance as attractive as the daytime, without inappropriate glaring or flashing light to neighbours or highways. Through the glass of the lobby pavilion the patrons get their first glimpse of the Thousand Islands theme within the Casino and are drawn to the exciting and entertaining gaming atmosphere.

The second clearing is only accessible through the first. It is an informal cluster of 24 timber-clad single and double-storey bedroom pavilions situated around a communal court. Internally, the single-storey pavilions divide the bedroom and living areas by low screens. With the two-storey pavilions, bedrooms and living areas are divided more overtly. The bedroom is located on a mezzanine with views down to the lower level double-height living area with a galley kitchen, bathroom and entrance. There is a sliding glass door in the living room of each pavilion to provide immediate access onto a private external timber deck and into the forest.

The W Mexico City is the second W Hotel outside United States and the first in Latin America. The design embraces local materials and culture, and blends modern design to add drama to the city’s skyline. This new landmark is visible from virtually anywhere in the city. Within an existing structural foundation for a different building, the architect was able to accommodate a complex program for a business oriented brand new hotel. He incorporated local materials into the facade that included ‘recinto’ (a volcanic stone) and juxtaposed these finishes with those used in the rest of the upscale contemporary Polanco neighbourhood. The result is a contemporary design that pays homage to the contemporary sophistication of a vibrant Mexico City while suggesting the roots of the city’s pre-Hispanic past.

The hotel has two distinct parts as viewed from the street. The first is a five-level crystal multi-use area designed to be modularly flexible depending upon what’s needed. The lobby, bars and restaurant fit together by the skillful manipulation of height and penetration of spaces. The business centre, meeting rooms and the multi-function rooms are located on two levels. These spaces work well together sharing double height ceilings and a stairway. The effect creates spaces that can be combined as one large room or separated into two distinct spaces depending upon what is required. The W’s Spa located at the fifth level has a traditional brick-lined Aztec sauna called a temazcal. There is also a massage area and juice bar. On top of the crystal base sits the 20-level tower that holds 237 luxury rooms and suites that are available either as corner suites or lofts.

The hotel resembles the grandeur of a 17th century European palace; the ornate ceilings, decorative walls, colonnades, and the use of rich colours and fabrics are prominent features of the Baroque and Neoclassic era. Designed specifically to satisfy the needs of international business travelers, all 769 luxurious rooms of Raffles the Plaza embraces Singapore’s tropical climate, incorporating a light and airy feel. The interior renovation of this 26-story-five-star landmark hotel included the complete redesign of the porte-cochere, entry and main lobbies, as well as the guest rooms and suites in the North and South towers. The guestrooms feature elegant, contemporary design with Asian accents, tastefully reflecting the international flavour of Singapore. sliced in two by a laser bright beam of light - as if struck by cosmic lightning. The two glass towers that result are similar, but each has its own identity. The taller tower that faces west toward the Hudson River and New Jersey is a blue skyscraper, vertically striped and highlighted with violet, silver and aqua slivers. It hovers over its counterpart, which is bronze with horizontal stripes accented with brown, celadon and gold. The colous appear to be random brushstrokes adding a painterly quality to the towers, which in effect become gigantic canvases. The theme of the hotel interior is the exterior. Colous and shapes from the exterior are translated to a smaller scale and reintroduced on the interior both in the public spaces and in the individual rooms and suites.

The concept behind this project is to introduce a tropical atmosphere to the Long Island Golf Resort Complex. Throughout Southeast Asia, especially in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, spas symbolize tranquility and rejuvenation for the body and soul. Spas also provide a sense of utopia infused by its surroundings and aroma. In the Long Island Spa, pavilions are built in the midst of waters in order to reflect the natural environment of mountains and sky with supplemented melody of consistent flowing water. The choice of natural materials, such as wood and stone, accentuates the design with its natural surroundings enabling visitors to immerse in a natural atmosphere. The elongated layout of these pavilions let visitors imagine themselves walking above water before arriving at a private zone cocooned in the tropical garden for relaxation. In addition, the location of these pavilions and the Jacuzzi offer a panoramic view of the surrounding lake and mountains, and maintains a sense of continuity by submerging into an environment of natural beauty. ilkd=fpi^ka=dlic=C=`lrkqov=`ir_

The interior of each pavilion is designed to provide maximum privacy for the visitor. The use of natural stones and wood allow visitors to unify with nature. Even the Jacuzzi is illuminated by natural light injected from the narrow opening above to match the outdoor atmosphere. It is intended to project a tranquil and serene atmosphere so that visitors can be immersed both physically and spiritually.

The outdoor Jacuzzi is the central focus of the spa. By locating it at the beginning of the walkway prior to the pavilions, the elevated construction allows for the maximum panoramic views of the site while giving privacy for a complete personal relaxation during the spa. The sculpted walls in the area are references to the tropical setting with a lush garden in Thai style when visitors step into the spa.

Tian Ma is a 27-hole Golf and Country Club with high-end housing and is rated as one of the top three clubs in China by golf magazines. 18 of the 27 holes have significant water features adjoining the fairways with several larger expanses of water, making water one of the main themes of the club. There are two clubhouses: the Golf Clubhouse and the Recreation Club, both overlooking the golf course and a lake. The architect, Tim Ruder, applied the southern Californian contemporary mission style for the two Clubhouses. The interior designers Steven Leach & Associates of Taipei, were selected through a tough competition. They created a simple, understated and elegant style aligning with the owners’ wishes. The landscape architect, Robert Egan, used stone and water features extensively to unify the two buildings.

The 3,500-sq-m Golf Clubhouse has three floors featuring a pro shop, restaurant, and meeting spaces on the main floor. The upper level houses a guest suite and meeting rooms at a very residential scale. The men and women’s shower rooms provide a sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, and massage rooms. At the lower level below the main lobby are the locker rooms called locker pods. They are divided into smaller buildings to keep them at a small scale. An underground car park is located at the basement. Throughout the Clubhouse, wooden beams and timber ceilings are used resulting in an overall design theme that follows the mission style.

2

The adjacent Recreation Club of 4,000 sq m on two levels contains a restaurant with teppanyaki grill and features a fireplace in water. There is a pro shop, fitness centre, hair salon, function rooms, children’s baby sitting/playing room, locker rooms with sauna, an indoor 25 m pool with 3 qf^kj^=`lrkqov=`ir_

a separate Kurhaus water treatment area, indoor kids water pool, and a pool side snack bar. The Club offers a full service VIP spa with rest areas, juice bar, and massage and treatment rooms. A large terrace is located outdoors with water features and a design concept similar to the Golf Clubhouse but offers a more contemporary feeling. There are six tennis courts with two grass courts and the rest hard surfaces. The total sums up to about 8,000 sq m of indoor facilities. In addition, a large landscaped garden is sited behind the Recreation Club. The intended atmosphere is to create a second home for the members of the Club and to offer a place where the whole family will find entertainment, along with a sense of security and comfort. The design of the Club therefore refrains from being too elaborated and the scale is kept from being oversized. Yet the quality of the club meets inter national standards and will be the benchmark for future golf clubs in China.

Zhaoqing Golf Club is located in a remote rural valley. Without any residential housing in sight, the place is overwhelmed with serenity and exclusiveness. In order to capture the beauty of nature, the complex is designed to blend with the landscape and the interior interweaving with the outdoor environment. The site features three key architectural components: the main block, the restaurant building and the dormitory. As the lead architect, Ettore Scottsass has influenced the design with his well-known Memphis style, it can be seen in the use of a pair of big columns in the restaurant. Hand picked selections can be found in the choice of materials, building techniques, down to colour coordination with an aim to adhere to local context.

On the second floor of the main block is register and reception area. A Chinese restaurant is located on the first floor with an alfresco cafe overlooking the extensive golf course and storage, car park on ground level. This block resembles a traditional Chinese house with large pitched roofs in green-enameled terra-cotta tiles and supported by large columns covered in dark green ceramic. Space is defined in an ambiguous way fusing the interior and exterior while scenery is skillfully framed and highlighted. A single colonnaded plinth together with a colossal staircase has created a dramatic impression to visitors.

to bring in a bit Chinese aura. This building is linked to the main block by a series of patios and colonnades. Through the minimal use of glass, Chinese palettes of yellow, dark green and red are generously used. It is aimed at creating no monument, but blending the architecture and interior with the picturesque surroundings, and to merge European architecture with traditional Chinese accents.

The restaurant building is covered in yellow ceramic tiles housing showers, sauna, changing rooms, restaurants, gym and relaxation area. In contrast to the Chinese style in the main block, it has a clean Western appearance, simple treatment and bright colours. Antique style furniture of the Ming dynasty is employed in the restaurant and reception area
