Welcome

Hello From Main Street Hello, and welcome to the 2013 Belfast The Bay And Beyond magazine! I recently had a chat with Bre Bebb, executive director of Our Town Belfast, and asked her why she chose to live in Belfast. She said she was hooked from the moment she encountered our legendary New Year’s By the Bay celebration. “This is such a culturally vibrant community,” she said. “That was immediately clear to me.” You just may get that impression, too. Come check out any one of our celebrations, from Bre’s beloved New Year’s By the Bay to some of the many competitions and contests highlighted in On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! (page 8), like the inspiring National Boatbuilding Challenge, the oh-so-yummy Waldo County Pie & Story Festival, the New World Cheese Rolling Championship— yes, you read that right—or the delightful Maine Wienerfest. We sure know how to have a good time! … And we sure know how to eat well. Delectable dishes from an abundance of restaurants, farmers’ markets, and roadside stands await you. What’s for Dinner? A Journey From Farm to Table (page 18) takes you from one Maine family’s table to the farms and farmers’ markets where the quality of fresh food is sky high and there’s no need to wait to be seated. Plenty of dining options around the area celebrate the work of our local farmers and their robust farms. From the daily specials at the Belfast Co-op and Chase’s Daily to a hearty grass-fed sirloin at Rollie’s Bar & Grill and Mexican- and Middle Easterninspired fare from the Good ‘n’ You food truck, there’s something for everyone. Take a look at a couple mouth-watering

choices in Eat Local (page 26) and head over to the Food & Dining directory (page 28) to consider the options for your next satisfying feast. Lest you think it’s all just outrageous fun and fantastic food in Waldo County, we’ve featured the fruits of our creative labors in This Creative, Collaborative Community (page 34). If you thought we had a lot of amazing farms in the area, just wait until you see how many creative people and businesses are here. View an exhibition at Waterfall Arts. Stroll by contemporary dancers and historic architecture during one of our Friday Night Art Walks and pop into a gallery to gaze at local art (see Calendar, page 12). Take up knitting, printmaking, or quilting with materials from one of our art supplies shops. Visit a museum, library or historical society. Try contra dancing. Immerse yourself in a Belfast Maskers theater show. Catch a Thursday evening concert by the bay. Tour an art studio. Dance in the street. Live it up! Whether you feel like a dip in the lake (Lakes & Ponds, page 32), shopping (Business and Member directories, pages 44-58), or a road trip (The Route to Brooks, page 64), this magazine has you covered. And when you’re in town, please stop by our Visitor Information Center and tell us all about the fun you’ve had. This area offers a lot to enjoy, but what we enjoy most is community. Waldo County is where people love to live, work, and play. We welcome you.

Windsor Chairmakers

L

ocated just six miles north of Camden on U.S. Route 1, Windsor Chairmakers has been a must-see destination for a quarter of a century. The owners, Jim and Nance Brown, have created the quintessential Yankee workshop on a historic 5-acre farmstead. The old barn now serves as the workshop, where you are invited to wander through and see one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture being made. While Windsor Chairmakers is famous for the craftsmanship and comfort of their Windsor chairs, you will also see the crew at work hand-crafting dining tables, beds, buffets, stools, benches, and custom pieces. The circa 1800 farmhouse welcomes guests to explore over 14 rooms, all decorated to showcase the furniture made on site. As you walk from room to room, you’ll enjoy the traditional furniture designs and the beauty of the time-honored finishes, an experience designed to inspire you when choosing your own custom furniture. The Shaker Gallery, an addition to the farmhouse in 2002, displays the Shaker-inspired furniture also made here. The beauty of this museum-like space and the simple and elegant lines of Shaker chairs, tables, and benches take you back to a less complicated time. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Windsor Chairmakers invites you to come explore this special place. You can choose to purchase the perfect piece from the showroom, arrange to have a custom piece built for you, or come by just to visit. You’ll find that this business reflects Jim Brown’s philosophy about making furniture here in Maine: “Things are best kept simple.” U.S. Route 1, 2596 Atlantic Highway Lincolnville, Maine 04849 207-789-5188 www.windsorchair.com

For the Dogs

What’s your favorite place in the Belfast area? ANNA LYNN Malamute/Lab mix, Searsport “Foster’s! The people who work there are so nice and I always get special attention and a free treat or two when I visit. I stay on my best behavior so Mama doesn’t make me wear my leash when we go inside the store. I even get to do my own shopping!”

LEXINGTON (Lexy), Saint Bernard, Waldo “It’s a toss-up between the salami counter at Eat More Cheese in Belfast and the sausage counter at the Co-op.”

EMILY Boxer, Belmont

“The Stover Preserve trail in Belfast.”

MERLIN Retriever/Spaniel mix, Northport “The Little River Belfast Bay Watershed trail: There are miles of paths to smell animal scents on, board walks for agility testing, streams to wallow in, and other dogs—wink, wink, Paddington— to prance with while hiking.”

MOXIE AND CLOVER Dachshunds, Belfast “I vote for the fields outside Belfast Cohousing, but Clover says it’s the Belfast Dog Park, paws down.”

GIBSON (Gibby), Pug, Augusta

COMPETITIONS & CONTESTS

AROUND BELFAST

THINK OF THE SPORTING LIFE IN MAINE AND SOME DELIGHTFUL SENSORY IMAGES COME TO MIND: THE LEATHER BINDINGS AND WOVEN WOOD OF SNOWSHOES SLAPPING ON FRESHLY FALLEN WHITE STUFF. A BRITTLE WICKER PACK BASKET FULL OF FISHING GEAR IN A CANOE.

A LOT OF MAINE’S APPEAL—not only to Vacationland and “rusticator” tourists but also to the robust Yankee stock who live here year-round—comes from the kind of Man (and Woman) in Nature experiences its rugged terrain provides. Waldo County and the vicinity are no exception: This area offers year-round opportunities for kids, teens, adults—even dachshunds!—of all shapes and sizes to motivate ourselves to be our best and do our best, both in the kind of traditional fields described above as well as in modern, unusual, and even downright goofy games, contests, and sports.

SPORTY SPICE Let’s go right to the truly tough stuff. In every season, there are competitions in which you can get your serious sport on, and these events take training, skill and endurance. Not for the faint of heart—literally!—the Waldo County YMCA 2013 Family Triathlon Festival puts locals to the test with a 525-yard pool swim/13-mile bike/3.5mile run for adults, plus races for juniors and kids. This year’s tri happens on May 18; make sure to register early for this popular event. Want to tour this beautiful state, get in shape, and fight lung cancer all at the same time? Strap on your helmet, join or create a team, or go it alone in the crowd for the annual Trek Across Maine, which sends bikers from the mountainous and gorgeous western border in Bethel horizontally across the state, ending at the picturesque Belfast harbor. The threeday, 180-mile fundraiser over Father’s Day weekend—June 14—16—supports the American Lung Association. Break a sweat and help those in need at the same time: The Belfast Area Rotary Club hosts two 5K road races every year to raise funds for its many community projects, including scholarships and hats and coats for children. The Bug Run 5K, on August 17, is part of the Belfast Harbor Fest. Runners enjoy a terrific route through shaded neighborhoods and along the waterfront, with free blueberry pancakes for all finishers and a grand prize of 20 lbs. of lobster (Maine “bugs”) for the top male and female winners. Or wait till the weather cools a bit and run the Pancake 5K, named for the flat course, always the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend, which ends with a free breakfast as well. Like your sweat with a bit more sass, and maybe even some sequins? Join the ladies of Rock Coast Rollers-—Ivana Causepain, Roll Doll, Chain Lynx, the Vengeful

Vegan and others—for some fast-moving, booty-bruising flat-track roller derby action: The fun Midcoast bouts of sirens on skates happen throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

ICE PICKS For those of you who would rather enjoy Maine’s legendary winters out-doors in the elements, there are a number of events that will help you put the win in winter. The New England Runner Sled Association hosts the Race Day for the Fastest Runner Sledder in all the land every February on Hogback Mountain in Montville. Timed trials are held in the morning; the fastest advance to the championship rounds in the afternoon. Bring your own sled and just show up to vie for the coveted title—no pre-registration is needed at this homegrown event.

Come winter, head over to Maine’s only curling club in Belfast for indoor fun on three sheets of meticulously maintained ice. Don’t know what those people are doing, sliding around on their knees or sweeping at the ice with brooms? The friendly folks at the Belfast Curling Club would welcome the opportunity to explain it all at one of their bonspiels (a tournament hosting other curlers from New England, Canada, and across the U.S.). Or join them for an open house: their website’s calendar lists the dates.

A slightly more formalized, but no less festive, sled race can be found at the US National Toboggan Championships, held this year from February 8—10 at the Snow Bowl in Camden. The races—traditional wooden toboggans are judged separately from experimental ones—result in awards given for the fastest, oldest, first all-female, and other categories of teams (some of whom compete in costume, many of whom enter with pun-laden team monikers). While the fearless competitors careen down the 400-foot iced chute, more than five thousand spectators hang out to sip cocoa and cheer on the fun. And what would a rural winter be without ice fishing? The Men’s Auxiliary VFW Photo above: Light in the Forest Photography, Belfast Curling Club; Photo below: Courtesy Rock Coast Rollers

hosts ice fishing derbies on “all legal waters” in Waldo County, including lakes and ponds in Swanville, Belmont, and elsewhere. Weigh-ins are held at the VFW Hall in Belfast, with cash prizes for the biggest hauls.

SAILOR’S DELIGHT Would you rather test your mettle on the waves than cut a hole in the ice? Take advantage of life on the coast by competing on area rivers or out on the open seas in one of these exciting races. In spring, just as the snowmelt starts to get the rivers rushing, the Waldo County YMCA plans a series of kayak and canoe races. Check their website for details, and then wait and see how hard Mother Nature will turn on the rapids. Hot dog lunches, T-shirts, trophies, and medals have all been part of previous years’ events.

If the kind of thrill you seek involves risking a plunge into the chilly depths in front of thousands of strangers, you may want to sign up for the Great International Lobster Crate Race, part of Rockland’s Maine Lobster Festival the weekend of July 31, in which you run along a pathway of tied-up crates in the harbor. Anyone can enter, and there are categories for all ages and sizes, but show up early, as this event fills up fast.

Not weird enough for your kooky kids? At this festival, children can also compete in a Cod Fish Carry. Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like. Bring the Handi Wipes. Belfast’s Rotary Club puts on the Harbor Fest from August 16—18, 2013, which includes not one but two boat-building contests. First, there is the National Boatbuilding Challenge, in which teams of two vie to complete a 12-foot wooden skiff, from plans and provided materials, in less than four hours, and then race it on the ocean. Teams are judged on construction, craftsmanship, and speed. This year will also include a Cardboard Boat Challenge, with fun as the number-one goal, and a regatta with Come Boating!, Belfast’s all-volunteer community rowing club.

chini, and hugest cuke. There is even— ewww!—a category for the largest and/ or most unusual byproduct of a compost bin, but mostly the food is judged just as agriculture fairs have been judged for decades: on the beauty of heirloom varieties, perfection of a certain type, and overall excellence for use. Ready your forks on Sunday, October 6, for the 11th annual pie bake-off, part of the beloved Waldo County Pie & Story Festival at the Belfast Boathouse. Admission is free; slices of homemade pie are

CHAMPIONS OF CHEWING Not all of us can be swift of foot or good with an oar. For those of us who enjoy consuming calories more than burning them, the Belfast region hosts some downright yummy food competitions as well. The Maine Celtic Celebration gives a new meaning to the compliment “big cheese” with its New World Cheese Rolling Championship, in which a three-pound wheel of creamy cheddar is rolled down a hill toward the bay, and hundreds of dairycrazed locals chase it in hot pursuit. Held this year on July 20, this is a not-to-miss event of pure silliness...and pure cheesiness. An array of mouth-watering veggies and goods awaits you in the Exhibition Hall at the Common Ground Country Fair from September 20—22, 2013, on the grounds of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association in Unity. Maine residents can enter their garden and farm-grown produce in contests including biggest squash, greatest zuc-

only $1 each; and prizes are given out for messiest, most beautiful, most locally grown, and best overall pies. Anyone can enter, and pies are devoured alongside entertainment from area storytellers and musicians. Finally, while you can’t eat these hot dogs, the Maine Wienerfest, held in early autumn at Steamboat Landing and benefiting the Belfast Dog Park, includes plenty of delights, including a costumed parade, derby races, and tunnel-burrowing demonstrations for local dachshunds and their doting humans. (And not to worry: gourmet wieners—the edible kind—and other snacks are also available.) So whether your goal is to stretch your muscles, your mind, or your waistband, join the other hardy souls of the Midcoast and strive to set a new personal record this year. Whether you hope to be the fastest, the first, or the messiest, we hope to see you here.

What’s for Dinner? BY ARIELLE GREENBERG BYWATER

A Journey From Farm to Table

18 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2013

IT’S A SCENE THAT IS PLAYING ITSELF OUT ALL OVER THE REGION THIS EVENING: SOMEONE IS GETTING SUPPER ON THE TABLE FOR THE FAMILY. From the picture windows in the kitchen of her house on top of Jackson Hill in Northport, Beth can look out over the slope rolling down Penobscot Bay and see that the color on the trees is peaking. It’s a gorgeous, crisp October day. But Beth doesn’t have time to stop and take it all in: It’s five o’clock, and like many other parents in the region, she’s busy getting a delicious, simple, healthy dinner of local food together. “I probably spend 95 percent of my day at this kitchen island,” she says with a smile. She has just arranged some soft cheese and savory crackers on a piece of flat slate. “Even when it’s just weeknight dinner for the family, I like to make it look nice,” she says. “It helps impart the feel-goodness of the food.” Soon, her three children will troop upstairs from the playroom, move the vase of fresh flowers on the table aside to make room for Monopoly, grab the pre-dinner snack, and unceremoniously devour it all while their mom makes soup and a salad.

Although farm-to-table food is all the rage these days, Mainers have been eating this way forever. And we continue to eat this way, for a variety of reasons. First, it’s inexpensive: Locally grown food, free of packaging and the middleman, is affordable, and, especially in a rural area like this, it puts vital dollars right back into the local system, which keeps the whole region and its agriculturally-driven economy afloat. Second, it’s seasonal, and keeps us in harmony with the rhythms of the beautiful, natural world around us. Third, it’s environmentally sustainable: Organic and small-farming practices preserve the quality of the clean air, water, and land for which Maine is known and cherished. Fourth, it’s delicious:

Nothing tastes as bright or intense as food gathered just hours before being served.

apprentices from all over the country flock here every year to learn traditional growing and harvesting techniques.

Finally, Mainers eat this way because we can: the Midcoast is a cornucopia of fresh food ready to be brought in from the fields and waves, carted home, cooked up, and chowed down, just as is happening tonight at Beth’s house.

At Beth’s house, tonight’s greens, potatoes, and radishes were all started as seeds, watered and grown, and pulled from the soil by hand at three different farms—Peacemeal in Dixmont, Chase’s in Freedom, and New Beat in Knox. Each vegetable began its life within a thirty-mile radius of the kitchen table in Northport where they will be eaten tonight, and their existence was made possible by the sweat, muscle, and traditional skills of dozens of the farmers who live and work alongside Beth in this rural region.

Like many of his neighbors, Beth’s dad had a garden when she was a girl; her mother kept thirty lobster traps in the bay. Midcoast Mainers take great pride In growing and gathering their own food: in addition to the raised beds and potted herbs in most of the yards in downtown Belfast, Waldo County is on the forefront of organic and small farming, and young

FARM A farm worker harvests vegetables for the CSA shares at Village Farm in Freedom

In addition to the produce available at farm stands that dot the country roads, the Belfast area abounds with innovative farmers selling shares in their community -supported agriculture (CSA) programs. “Know Your Farmer” is not just a bumper sticker slogan around here: according to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), nearly 7,000 Maine families invest in the livelihood and health of more than 180 Maine farms in this way, while putting delicious food on their own tables.

Another way folks in the Belfast area like to buy food straight from the source is at the farmers’ market (Waldo County alone has eight different markets to hit, including two that keep going through the winter months; many more markets anchor the towns in the surrounding counties). “There’s a sense of adventure and exploration at the market,” Beth says, “since you never know ahead of time exactly what will be there this week, and you can talk to the farmer about what it all is and what to do with it. I’ve gotten some great recipes there.”

Belfast’s Farmers’ Market, which Beth frequents, provided tonight’s cheese, from the goats at Appleton Creamery, as well as the artisan bread, from Billi Barker’s bakery at Fire Fly Farm in St. Albans. Lobster pounds, like fourthgeneration owned and operated Young’s just up the road in East Belfast, and the newly started Port Clyde Fresh Catch seafood CSF (like a CSA, only fish instead of agriculture), offer delectables from the bay visible from Beth’s windows. Luckily, for the times when jobs, chauffeuring children to swim practice, or dashing around to town meetings keep busy Mainers from getting to the market, shops like the Belfast Co-op provide year-round, daily access to more than 2,000 locally grown and produced items, including vegetables, cheese, bread, and fish as well, not to mention fruit, meat, beans, grains, sweets, syrup, honey, herbs, eggs, and more, all grown, made, and processed by our neighbors. Member-owned by more than 3,000 locals, it’s Maine’s largest and oldest food cooperative.

“THERE’S A SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND EXPLORATION AT THE FARMERS’ MARKET,” BETH SAYS, “SINCE YOU NEVER KNOW AHEAD OF TIME EXACTLY WHAT WILL BE THERE THIS WEEK, AND YOU CAN TALK TO THE FARMER ABOUT WHAT IT ALL IS AND WHAT TO DO WITH IT.

LOBSTER STEW

Tonight, Beth, her husband Joe, and their three kids sit down to a supper of simple lobster stew from an easy but treasured recipe from Beth’s late mother, whose photograph on the bulletin board keeps her spirit alive in the kitchen. The soup is served alongside greens, bread, and an autumnal apple tart for dessert. “We strive to eat very nutritiously. If I serve something rich, I try to pair it with something light,” Beth, a triathlete, says. “But you know, it’s fall, and that brings forth the hearty dishes.” Although it’s rare for Beth to make the

same thing twice—she’s always on the lookout for something new to make, so her dad still brings over his copies of Bon Appetit to share with her—she sometimes relies on standards like the simple vinaigrette she is mixing now by vigorously shaking a small mason jar full of olive oil, lemon juice, and vinegar. Beth’s roots in this region are as long as those on the radishes she’s slicing up for salad tonight, but she and her family chose to remain here when they could have gone elsewhere in large part for the same reason so many Midcoast Mainers make this place their home:

the plethora of sustainable, seasonal, easy and affordable high-quality food. This food is the fuel needed to keep busy families—and the local economy —going. “We’re definitely foodies, so when Joe and I travel to New York City, we like to try and get to some of the coolest new restaurants. Lately, those are all farmto-table restaurants that are trying to copy the way we eat at home in Maine,” Beth laughs. “There, it’s a trend. Here, it’s just smart, healthy, neighborly, and the way it’s been done for generations.” (see recipes on the next page) Photos: Joseph A. Corrado

LOBSTER STEW (Beth’s mom’s recipe) 1 stick of butter 1 quart whole milk 1 cup cream (or to taste) 4 fresh lobsters (1.5 lbs. each) 1 bag of potatoes, cubed and steamed Steam the lobsters in about an inch or two of water (approx. 8 - 10 min). Let lobsters cool and then pick the meat. Reserve accumulated lobster juice. Melt butter in a large saucepan and add meat. Gently simmer for 10 min. Add lobster juice, milk, and cream and bring the temperature up without letting it boil. Add steamed potato cubes. Add salt and pepper to taste. It is best to eat it the next day so the flavors can meld. Serve with some chopped chives as a garnish.

this creative, collaborative community by Karen Moser

ow does a coastal town of less than 7,000 people with an elephant atop an Art Deco movie house, weekly Friday Art Walks, an annual New World Cheese Rolling Championship race, four performing arts groups, and dozens of art galleries come to be? In the late 1960s and ‘70s, countercultural people in the back-to-the-land movement sought out inexpensive, fertile land. Meanwhile, the wonderful quality of light, access to a working waterfront, concentration of free thinkers, and, again, the relatively cheap land, attracted artists to settle in Waldo

County. These back-to-the-landers formed farms and food-buying clubs, including one from Liberty and Montville that grew to become the iconic Belfast Co-op, while these artists formed galleries, such as the Artfellows Cooperative Gallery that rented space in the second floor of the Odd Fellows building for $25 a month in 1980. In the decades since, the Belfast area has had its ups and downs, but the core of creativity and entrepreneurship has held strong. With the City of Belfast’s business-friendly approach, in the past five years, Belfast has morphed from empty storefronts to a place where it’s hard to find parking.

According to economic development director Thomas Kittredge, the creative economy—businesses and processes that rely on creativity as an economic tool—is now the third largest sector in Waldo County.

their goals. The BCC’s focus is the creative economy. Most recently, the organization has created a Farm and Art Studio Tour along the Waldo County trail system showcasing local farmers and artists all driven by handmade aesthetics.

Recognizing the economic weight of our creative economy are four key agencies: the City of Belfast, Our Town Belfast, the Chamber of Commerce, and the newly created Belfast Creative Coalition (BCC). Working together and communicating often, including serving on each other’s boards and committees, these agencies support the “massive number of creatives here,” as BCC coordinator Kimberly Callas puts it. Each agency has a particular focus or constituency—for example, as a Main Street community, Our Town Belfast focuses on urban renewal through historic preservation and a walkable, thriving downtown—and all four collaborate to achieve

“Creative economy describes more than business types,” BCC’s Callas notes. “It describes a process. We have to collaborate and innovate. If you have a lot of creative individuals, you have a lot of innovative businesses.” So what about the elephant atop the Art Deco movie house? Is it part of the end result from this original and continuing influx of enterprising individuals and their spirit of cooperation? Here are some perspectives and profiles of people and businesses contributing to this creative, cooperative, resilient community.

By collaborating and overlapping geographic areas—from the widest coverage by the Belfast Creative Coalition to the specific downtown focus of Our Town Belfast—the four key agencies in Belfast have optimal impact and reach.

WORKING TOGETHER 36 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2013

With 17 guarantors on its commercial loan and great support from the City of Belfast, Waterfall Arts, a nonprofit contemporary arts community center aka creativity incubator, opened its Belfast center in 2006 offering classes, exhibits, music performances, and public arts programs. One such exhibit was Caoimhghin Ó Fraithile’s floating structures, which people visited in a canoe and then set afire. Another program Waterfall Arts introduced to the community was Please Be Seated, fun and sometimes funky benches and seats scattered throughout the downtown area and made by local artists and craftspeople. In fact, Waterfall Arts, along with the City of Belfast and Our Town Belfast, applied for and received a Creative

Communities=Economic Development grant from the Maine Arts Commission to form the Belfast Creative Coalition (BCC). The BCC is dedicated to cultivating the creative economy, including economic and community planning and development in a comprehensive revitalization effort.

“When people bring in or talk about their art or sewing projects, it inspires us.” —Abby Gilchrist, Fiddlehead Artisan Supply Supporting the local creatives is part and parcel for shops like Fiddlehead Artisan Supply on High Street, which offers everything from needlefelting classes and quilting fabrics to calligraphy inks, dollmaking supplies, and origami paper. “Our customers come in with some great craft projects,” owner Abby Gilchrist said. “It’s nice to be around creativity every day in the shop … Opening the business [in May 2011] was a creative process itself.”

“It’s not so much about the latest trends or fashions as it is what local people are asking for.” —Brian Horne, Colburn Shoe Store

“I’ve even had produce from my CSA share in the store.” —Dee Bielenberg, City Drawers Meet Dee Bielenberg. She had an empty storefront in a building she owned. She heard people say “But where would I get underwear?” when confronted with the realities of big-box stores. She had a background in fashion. Combining all these factors—a “perfect storm,” she calls it—she dreamed up City Drawers and now her shop displays are some of the town’s most amusing. Lacy panties on a pumpkin for Halloween? Why not? And when Maine Fare, a celebration of local food and farms, came to town in September 2012, Bielenberg’s displays included a couple doing a spin on the classic American Gothic painting. “I like to look at what the town is doing and see how we can join in on the fun,” she explained.

“We listen to what people need and figure out how to evolve and respond to those needs while keeping our mission intact.” —Paula Johnson, Cornerspring Montessori School Not only does starting up a new business take creative gumption, but staying in business over the hurdles requires creative thinking as well. Cornerspring Montessori School became a nonprofit organization—and thus started to qualify for grants—just when a lot of nonprofits were closing, due to the recession and

a lack of available grant funding. “We didn’t rely on grants before,” school director Paula Johnson explained. “We creatively budgeted, so when the funds decreased, we were able to continue.” The school, which follows the Montessori educational philosophy, has survived economic setbacks in part because it has remained flexible and evolved to respond to people’s needs while remaining true to its mission. For example, when the recession began, “we put all our energy into financial assistance programs so children could remain in school” and continue there after the economy recovered. The school has endured and now, parents tell the school that they move to the area because of Cornerspring’s presence.

“We can implement ideas across the board that stick and have value.” —Matthew O’Malia, GO Logic

Photo: Trent Bell

38 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2013

“This community has a passionate belief in keeping it local.” —Brian Horne, Colburn Shoe Store Some area businesses have seen more than one recession and are still in business today. Colburn Shoe Store, the nation’s oldest shoe store, celebrated its 180th anniversary in 2012. Owner Brian Horne attributes local loyalty as a big contributing factor to the store’s longevity. “We also listen to our customers and respond. It’s not so much about the latest trends or fashions as it is what local people are asking for.”

We’re seeking to expand in order to produce “groundbreaking window technology that will change the look and feel of windows and doors.” —Scott Hawthorne, Mathews Brothers Founded in 1854, Mathews Brothers is the oldest window manufacturer in the country, so it’s safe to say they are a longtime fixture in Belfast. While the company competes on a global level with window technologies and innovations, they stay strongly connected to the community, including donating money to light the town’s Christmas tree in 2012.

“Our goal is local sustainability. We want to connect local farmers to the community and give the community healthy options.” —Mylisa Vowles, Belfast Co-op From its humble beginnings as a foodbuying club, the Belfast Co-op opened as a storefront business committed to local sustainability in 1976. By connecting local farmers to the community, developing a compost recovery system, promoting healthy lifestyles to schools,

and collaborating with other organizations to put on film screenings and public events, the Co-op has remained true to its mission. “We have to change with the times and hold on to the quality of life our community offers,” general manager Mylisa Vowles explained. The Co-op has found amazing community support in championing a local food economy. Last year, 10% of overall sales at the Co-op were from local items, including more than 10,000 dozen of eggs, 3,000 pounds of maple syrup, and 8,000 pounds of potatoes. Oh, and the lettuce: 4,000 pounds of it!

“There are a lot of people in Belfast who are looking outside the box for solutions. It’s fertile ground for new ideas.” —Matthew O’Malia, GO Logic The Belfast-based company GO Logic uses a cross-disciplinary approach to get super-efficient, high-performance homes built. A design/build company that gives equal footing to both sides of the business, principal Matthew O’Malia has found the collaboration “has allowed us to push the envelope of sustainable design because we have this synergy, this true integration between construction and design. We can implement ideas across the board that stick and have value. With this structure, we get direct feedback from the construction site and it allows us to innovate and improve. The level of responsibility and the integration into the full process changes the dynamic in a positive way.” One of the company’s current projects, Belfast Cohousing & Ecovillage, is another example of the local community embracing a lifestyle choice that values collaboration, community, and creativity, notes principal Alan Gibson.

“Collaboration is key.” —JB Turner, Front Street Shipyard Likewise, Front Street Shipyard, a full-service marina and yacht facility, was founded by six owners (three of whom are partners at nearby shipyards)

who believed that by collaborating, they could make business more efficient and have more capacity. “This is unique in the boat world,” explains co-owner JB Turner. “It’s a relatively competitive environment but here we are: both competitors and partners. Our whole business is about collaboration.” And indeed, it’s working: Front Street Shipyard has become one of the largest yacht yards in the Northeast after being in business for just a year, employs nearly 100 people, and is planning to add a new 300-ton travel lift to its operations. Speaking of collaboration, the City of Belfast has supported this new business, from fast-tracking it through the development process to helping acquire a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant, and Front Street Shipyard clients benefit from being able to hop off the boat and enjoy a variety of places to eat, shop, and be entertained.

“I believe in farmers and a collaborative approach.” —Jan Anderson, Coastal Farms & Foods Belfast being Belfast, the creative input of a farmer doesn’t get past anyone—and that’s not counting his or her fiddling talents. “A piece of the creative economy,” says Jan Anderson, president and CEO of Coastal Farms & Foods, “is the food entrepreneur, the farmer: putting together a business to satisfy a community need.” With 4,000 square feet, an already established berry processing and storing operation handling 5,000 pounds of blueberries every hour, and the ability to expand, Anderson opened her business as an incubator. “We have a collaborative approach. We don’t want it any other way.” Businesses like Cheryl Wixson’s Kitchen, Julie Ann’s Outrageous! Foods, and Heiwa Tofu use the processing and storing facility to efficiently increase production on many Maine-grown and often organic products. “Belfast is a vibrant community that supported this idea well before I thought about it,” said Anderson. Her creative vision of collaboration has benefited local farmers and eaters alike.
