really do have the best job. As the Chamber Director, I meet people every day who are excited to be visiting or even residents who are interested in discovering what’s happening in the area. We often hear, “I love Belfast and I want to move here!” One of the most frequently asked questions is what makes Belfast so special. It’s an easy answer and not the one you might think. We have great restaurants, an active arts scene, events galore, a great harbor walk and rail trail, etc., all the things you’d think the Chamber might offer as an answer. That question is best answered when I share that it’s the people of Belfast and Waldo County who make it such a great place to live, work, and play. For example, our visitor center greets thousands of people a year. And who welcomes the visitors? Chamber volunteers. Most businesses or agencies brag about how amazing their volunteers are, and we are no exception. For the past twentyfive years the volunteers have been led by Gil Leslie, of Belfast. He has greeted people with a captivating smile, a story, and shared his love of the area. Our 2

volunteers come for a two-hour shift, catch up on what’s happening, and share that information with visitors and locals alike. They express their genuine love of the area, and that is evident in the conversations I’m privileged to listen to. We couldn’t exist without their help, and we aren’t the only organization that is dependent on volunteers. While I have no official count there are many places for people to volunteer their time, talent, and enthusiasm. Thank goodness we have such a generous group of people willing to help. This is what makes Belfast so special — our community. Come see for yourself what makes Belfast such an amazing place to visit. The Chamber would be happy to help you plan your visit. You can have Belfast be your destination with a myriad of possible day trips or you can discover so much to do right here. ou may find yourself not wanting to leave. Historic architecture Maine has old buildings galore, but Belfast has an embarrassment of riches in the historic-architecture department, namely: one of Maine’s largest concentrations of pre–Civil War architecture, two historic districts on the National Register, plus Maine’s best extant (which means intact) brick commercial district. More than two dozen Museum in the Streets panels tell the story of the city’s 250-year evolution and describe major landmarks. Pick up maps at the ham e o fi e, o stop by the Belfast Historical Society and Museum, which is open May to October.

Public art aplenty Art literally spills into the streets in downtown Belfast, thanks to some creative efforts on the part of city leaders to showcase local talent. Movie stars adorn the crosswalk near the Colonial Theatre and chicken feet grace two crosswalks on Main Street. Thanks to an invitational organized by Our o n e ast ast ea , no fi e othe oss a s don the designs of local artists. Nearly two dozen storefronts also display local artists’ work in the form of dollhouse-size doors intended to evoke Stuart Little, the tiny talking mouse created by beloved Maine author E. B. White.

One million daffodils After a long winter, no sight is more welcome than frilly yellow daffodil blooms, and each spring Belfast s a o n the s nn o e , than s to the am t ons of Belfastian Elisabeth Wolfe, who in 2018 set out to plant one million daffodils over the next 20 years. Dozens of businesses and hundreds of volunteers have stepped up to assist the effort, and nearly 157,000 bulbs have been planted so far. “Belfast has been such a wonderful place to live and raise my family, I just wanted to do something to give back,” Wolfe says.

Passy Pete Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has its famous groundhog to forecast winter’s end, and Belfast has “Passy Pete,” the clairvoyant crustacean, who emerges each Labor Day weekend to predict how many more weeks of summer are in the cards. A group of local business owners organized the whimsical anti–Groundhog Day event in 2015, and each year they gather at Heritage Park to pull Passy Pete from a lobster trap, get his prediction, then set him free in the open ocean again.

Broke-Neck Santa Most cities have holiday light displays, but only Belfast has Broke-Neck Santa, a trio of vintage holiday lights that features Kris Kringle with his head at an angle, as if his neck is broken. Broke-Neck Santa has his own Facebook page, he’s had jingles written in his honor, and even ornaments hewn in his likeness. The famous Santas typically appear at various locations around High Street, between Macleod’s and the Belfast Free Library.

Rowers, rowers, rowing their boats In any given Maine harbor you’ll see yachts, day sailers, schooners, and even cruise ships. But in Belfast, you’ll see these 32-foot pilot gigs, six to a boat, paddling alongside them he s a e the eet o Come Boating!, a community rowing and sailing program based out of the boat shed by the Harbor Walk. he nonp ofit omm n t o n and sailing group, launched in 2000, gets thousands of people out on the water year-round, and welcomes kids and adults of all ages and abilities.

A working waterfront Like many Maine harbors, Belfast was a hive of manufacturing in the 19th and 20th centuries, and today it’s still abuzz with big working boats. Front Street Shipyard builds, repairs, and stores everything from yachts to lobsterboats in its six cavernous hangars on the waterfront, and employs a staff of more than 100.

An old-school shopping experience Seaside towns tend to be saturated with souvenir shops, but Belfast is one of the few where you can tackle everyday errands and get groceries, coffee, hardware, shoes, books, toys, clothes, knitting supplies, and even a bike tune-up on an easy stroll downtown. The shopping district includes Left Bank Books and two other independent bookstores, an underwear boutique where ladies can get tailored for just the right fit, and a men’s shop that even rents tuxedos.

A pair of year-round farmers’ markets

SHARPENING by

Most communities have one farmers’ market that appears during a blip of summer. But Belfast has two markets that run year-round, rain or shine. The Belfast Farmers’ Market pops up at Waterfall Arts on Friday mornings April to October, and at Aubuchon Hardware the rest of the year. United Farmers Market of Maine, which operates Saturday mornings out of a former window showroom on Spring Street, hosts 70 vendors that offer everything from produce and prepared foods to handmade furniture.

Knit-ins, pottery parties, co-weaving, and more For any creative type in search of community, Belfast is a bit of paradise found. The city has a myriad of co-working spaces where artists can hone their crafts year-round. Waterfall Arts has community photo, pottery, and glass-blowing studios. Belfast Fiberarts provides workspace for weavers, spinners, sewers, and others. Belfast Clay Studio invites potters in for classes and time at the wheel. Searsport Shores Ocean Campground welcomes creators of all kinds at its Fiber Arts College each September, as well as at workshops throughout the year.

t the dawn of the 20th century, Belfast was a bustling center of business enterprise. Downtown was filled with factories turning out clothes, axes, window sashes, and a panoply of other goods. Another industry was also burgeoning here: real photo postcards. t the time postcards were as prolific as the texts and tweets we fire off today. Most postcards were mass-produced by print houses in Europe, and “real photo” postcards were emerging as a premium item. At least three photographers were making real photo cards in Belfast, and in the offices of the Waldo ounty erald udolph erman assens launched the Eastern Illustrating and hotography ompany which would become the country’s largest maker of real photo postcards and produce an unrivaled visual archive of life in the early 20th century.

The photographers travelled the countryside in Model T’s and used 5-by7-inch box cameras with dry plate glass negatives to capture the scenes. They’d ship the negatives back to the Eastern llustrating offices which eventually moved to the building on hurch treet where the American Legion Hall sits today. There, a staff of 20 women and girls would print the negatives to paper and label them, writing backwards with white ink, so that when the images printed in reverse, the letters would read left to right. At its height, Eastern Illustrating was turning out 1 million real photo postcards a year, and by the time assens sold the business in it had produced 75,000 negatives. “Because of what he did, we have this amazing archive of life in early 20th entury New ngland says Kevin Johnson, photo archivist for 18

COURTESY OF THE PENOBSCOT MARINE MUSEUM

Each spring, as soon as the muddy roads were hardened enough to drive on, assens would dispatch photographers to capture people, landmarks, landscapes, parades, and scenes from everyday life throughout New England.

Maine Alpaca Experience and Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm began when a child fell in love with alpacas and as an adult, turned that passion into a successful alpaca farm and two retail shops. Robin Fowler Pratt and Corry Pratt are the proud owners of this wonderful operation. Robin met her first alpaca at a fair many years ago, but never forgot the feeling of being in their presence. In 2004 the dream began to evolve when they built a barn themselves and purchased their first three alpacas. Within months, the herd size increased with the birth of the first cria. The first year they sold about a thousand dollars’ worth of alpaca socks from their garage. Business grew quickly and the need for an on-farm store became evident. In 2009 they constructed a gift shop at the farm on Crosby Brook Road in Unity.

As the herd size increased, so did the fiber harvest. Working with fiber artisans, mills, and producers across the country and beyond, their inventory became more varied and accessible. They decided to expand again and purchased a large building on the coast on Route 1 in Northport. The new property included a generous yard, well-suited for alpacas to visit for day trips in the summer months. This allows customers that may not make it to the farm to still have an up close and personal look at the lovely creatures growing the fleece their purchases are made from. Two large rooms of apparel, from socks to yarn – sweaters to blankets – hats, mittens, plush toys, tech wear and outerwear for all ages, assures no one will go away empty handed. The farm in Unity is now home to 41 high quality, magnificent fiber producing alpacas and they have the two retail locations featuring apparel made from that very luxurious fiber. They provide free tours at the farm where spending time with the alpacas is a delight for any animal lover and a respite for a weary mind. In good weather, nothing is better than having a picnic onsite while enjoying the incredible surroundings and shopping at the gift shop. The impeccably clean facility complete with bio-security measures - demonstrates the wonderful care these spectacular creatures receive. One visit and you’ll want to come back again and again. The number of socks and other items sold per year has certainly increased and the business is a dream turned reality. Visit for yourself and see what the Maine Alpaca Experience is all about! Farm tours are free and take place Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM with no appointment needed. The shops are open during the same hours. For more information about alpacas, free farm visits, store hours or shopping online, please visit our website at MaineAlpacaExperience.com.

the Penobscot Marine Museum, in Searsport, which holds 50,000 negatives from the Eastern Illustrating collection. But it’s not just the volume of the photos that’s remarkable, Johnson adds, it’s their quality and resolution. Because the negatives were 5 by 7 inches, in contrast to a modern 35mm negative, which is about the size of a postage stamp, when you zoom in, the image remains sharp and clear, and one can decipher facial expressions, license plates, details of clothing and accessories, posters, and advertisements. “I think this clarity is a key to the power of these photos,” Johnson says. The effort to archive the Eastern Illustrating photos has been a 15-year odyssey for Johnson. Some 35,000 of the negatives were sold to a series of owners and ultimately donated to the institution that is now Maine Media Workshops. In 2007, after a pipe burst in the basement where they were being 20

stored, Johnson, a workshop employee at the time, worked alongside fellow students to dry them out. Ultimately, the negatives were donated to the Penobscot Marine Museum, where they remain today. Since that time, Johnson, along with an army of volunteers, has been working to archive, catalog, and digitize the collection, and he has led the effort to track down some 15,000 negatives that went missing from the collection over the years. Many of them have ended up in the hands of collectors and antique dealers. Selections are on view at the museum and also online. Along with the archives of National Fishermen and dozens of other collections, Penobscot Marine Museum has one of the state’s largest archives of historical photographs, with more than 300,000 negatives, prints, slides, postcards, and daguerreotypes, plus 140,000 online.

Johnson is driven by a passion to properly preserve and share the collection and complete this historical record, and also try to capture as many stories as possible that the photos depict from the people who were alive when they were taken. “Every place changes over time, but the rate of change is usually slow and gradual, and often slips under the radar of day-to-day life,” he says. “How a place changes and evolves is a fascinating study, and the photograph is the perfect medium to examine it. A photograph is much more accurate than our memories and one can fill books with the words it would take to describe the details and stories a single photo can hold.” •

aine’s third-longest footpath, a scenic 47-mile route from Unity to Belfast, has a simple and apt moniker: the Hills to Sea Trail. It’s a name that nods to the breathtaking topographical variety that attracts nature lovers and outdoor-rec buffs to Waldo County. From wooded peaks to placid trout ponds, from miles of forested trails to quiet beaches on tidal coves, the region has a little something for everyone. Here are the best opportunities to get outside and play.

TAKE A HIKE Three different trails reach the exposed 1,060-foot summit of Frankfort’s Mount Waldo, from which hikers get a bird’s-eye view of the midcoast and can even glimpse distant Katahdin on a very clear day. Take the Old Quarry Trail (from the end of Mt. Waldo Road, off Route 1A in Frankfort), which winds past a gravel pit turned swimming hole that’s a welcome detour on hot summer days (just don’t jump or dive in from the cliffs). Watch for a 3.5mile round trip through mixed woods and across dramatic exposed ledges.

NORTH STAR ADVENTURES

022-025_4Seasons_Belfast2022.indd 23

The Belfast section of the Hills to Sea Trail is a mellower jaunt through stands of old oaks and pale birches, across boardwalks through some wildlife-rich boggy patches, and past some gnarly outcrops and boulders. Watch for deer along the trail, which runs 2.8 miles from Belfast’s City Point Central Railroad (13 Oak Hill Rd.) to the next road crossing on Route 7. The nearby Stover Preserve offers a shorter walk through a similar landscape, a mile-long loop trail that briefly follows a waterfowl-rich meander in the Passagassawakeag River. Find the

trailhead on Doak Road, some two miles north of downtown Belfast. The preserve is protected by the Coastal Mountains Land Trust, which manages more than a dozen other hiker-friendly preserves in the neighborhood find maps and guides at coastalmountains. org. For an easy in-town stroll, Belfast’s Harbor Walk hugs the city’s shoreline for less than a mile, taking walkers and joggers past the shipyard, docks full of pleasure boats, and riverfront parks. The view of the harbor from the Armistice Footbridge, at the north end of the paved walk, is classic midcoast Maine. The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition offers guides and a map to dozens more Waldo County hikes at belfastbaywatershed.org.

GO FOR A RIDE Bikeable Belfast is a cycling town par excellence, as the folks at CG Bikes (39 Main St.; 207-218-1206; cgbikesmaine. com) can tell you. The shop rents mountain bikes and hybrids by the day or week, and the staff can point would-be riders to popular road routes with minimal car traffic like the 7-mile loop around Cape Jellison Road, in nearby Stockton Springs, which includes a short detour to the Fort Point lighthouse. Cyclists looking to avoid cars altogether take to the crushed-stone Belfast Rail Trail, a 2.3-mile former railroad bed that runs alongside the west bank of the Passagassawakeag, connecting the city’s Harbor Walk to the Hills to Sea Trail. There’s a shady picnic area 1.5 miles from town with a lovely view of the tidal river, and the trestle bridge, 1.8 miles from town, is a great spot to pull over and watch egrets preening in the shallows. Mountain bikers head to the new El Depot Mountain Bike Park, a little over a mile of beginner-friendly, benchcut trails on the site of a former ski hill. The banks and switchbacks are flowy and fun with a couple small bridges crossing whispering streams and none too much climbing. Find the parking lot on City Point Road, a mile north of Route 1. In Monroe, off Route 139, several miles of singletrack 24

at the Basin Pond Recreation Area crisscross hills and eskers that overlook the namesake pool.

GET ON THE WATER Belfast Harbor just might be the rowing epicenter of the Maine coast, thanks largely to Come Boating!, a volunteerrun nonprofit that organi es daily community rows all summer on the harbor and in the Passagassawakeag River. Would-be rowers from beginners to experts sign up at comeboating. org, then join a crew in one of several Cornish pilot gigs, guided by coxswain commands and cutting through the water as fish ump and surfacing seals cast curious glances. Throughout the year, Come Boating! alum and Registered Maine Guide Nicolle Littrell offers rowing lessons, guided trips, and special-event rows (including romantic moonlit excursions) for singles, pairs, and trios through her DoryWoman Rowing. Find details and sign up at dorywomanrowing.com. Paddlers looking to take to coastal or inland waters can arrange rentals, lessons and tours with outfitters that include Ducktrap Kayak & SUP (2175 Rte. 1, Lincolnville; 207-2368608; ducktrapkayak.com) and Water Walker Kayak (730 West Main St., Monroe; 207-525-3065; touringkayaks. com). Tours in the area range from leisurely half-day paddles around Belfast Harbor or Monroe’s Basin Pond to full-day excursions on Penobscot Bay. Waldo County is speckled with lakes and ponds that call out to anglers during fishing season from larger bodies, like Swanville’s 1,400-acre Swan Lake, with its healthy populations of brook trout and landlocked salmon, to tiny, little-visited bass ponds, like Lincolnville’s 34-acre evenseller ond. ly fishermen love the Ducktrap River for its small, wily wild brookies and sea-run salmon.

EMBRACE WINTER Snowshoers and cross-country skiers await a good base at nature preserves like the Coastal Mountain Land Trust’s Head of Tide Preserve, where Nordic

nuts make tracks on two miles of gently rolling trails through woods and fields following crumbing stone fences weaving through long-abandoned orchards and overlooking riffles in the Passagassawakeag. Sledders have their share of trails too, with snowmobile clubs Belfast Area Snow Packers (facebook.com/belfastareasnowpackers) and Tri Town Snow Riders (of Belmont, Morrill, and Searsmont; facebook.com/tritownsnowridersclub) maintaining and grooming dozens of miles of local trails that connect in Waldo County’s western reaches to the state’s massive Interconnected Trail System. Contact the clubs for maps and details on group rides. •

bright and beachy too. The vibrant mai tai is a nice match for the orangey complexion of the sky as the sun sets across the harbor. In Searsport, yet another space has found new life as a restaurant. It took new owner Russell Manton two years to rehab a former auto garage as Rio’s Spiked Café (357 West Main St., Searsport; 207-548-4016; riosspikedcafe. com). The dining room’s unusual rounded shape creates a cozy yurt-like flow with a central stone chimney as the visual focal point. And Rio’s has filled a new niche in the area specializing in stylishly plated tapas, like roasted dates that are wrapped with serrano ham and stuffed with gorgonzola and spiced pork belly with pan-fried polenta and marinara. Samplers of Maine cheeses come with local honey and a house-made celery mostarda. And the entrée portions are thoughtfully and elaborately composed dry-rubbed flat-iron steak from a nearby farm, with herb-roasted potatoes, grilled cipollini onions, and balsamic butter, for instance. Not far down the road in Searsport, Anglers Restaurant has been satisfying local appetites with favorites like fried clams and fish and chips 2 ast Main St., Searsport; 207-548-2405; anglersseafoodrestaurant.com) for more than two decades. Owner Bud Hall, who opened the restaurant in 2000, then went on to open locations in Newport and Hampden, has enjoyed watching the region evolve, for both seasoned longtimers like himself, as well as newcomers. “This area has a little something for everybody,” Hall says. “It’s not just one special thing, it’s got arts, excellent restaurants, the waterfront, the boatyard, all within a five-minute drive. ou can be in the woods within five minutes. t’s the best of all worlds together. We’re very blessed.” In downtown Belfast, the diversity of the restaurant lineup only ever seems to grow. In late 2019, the 32-seat Satori opened in a 19th-century bank building, making sushi that’s as much a visual as a culinary art. Other spots, like Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House (52 28

HELPING HANDS With a lift from The Lost Kitchen, Waldo County Bounty works to get locally grown produce to local families. Just weeks after the pandemic forced the economy to shut down in 2020, a coalition of Waldo County individuals, organizations, and farms sprang into action to get fresh produce to families facing food insecurity. Led by groups like the Daybreak Growers Alliance, Unity Barn Raisers, and a phalanx of volunteers, Waldo County Bounty developed a countywide network to buy food from local farmers and distribute it to food pantries, and glean and share surplus crops. The coalition acted fast. By the end of 2020, Waldo County Bounty had purchased $20,000 of produce from 13 local farms, distributed it to 16 food pantries, gleaned nearly 25,000 pounds of excess crops, established 10 free-produce tables, and raised $100,000 to continue its work. More than 80 volunteers, and more than a dozen local organizations and businesses have contributed to the effort, and among them was The Lost Kitchen, the renowned restaurant in Freedom launched by native Erin French, the James Beard-nominated chef, author of two books, and the subject of a TV series on the Discovery+ Network. The eatery, which is as famous for its hard-to-come-by seats as its Maine-raised fare, offered hopeful customers early access to reservations in exchange for a donation to Waldo County Bounty. The drive yielded $325,000. The initiative, along with grants and other donations, have allowed Waldo County Bounty to continue its work to get fresh local produce to hungry residents and support local farms. “The rapid impact of COVID on families and businesses, and particularly the immediate increase in food insecurity, prompted action across so many parts of the community — farms, volunteers, churches, towns, and the food pantries and soup kitchens that became even more essential services,” Waldo County Bounty treasurer Lissa Widoff says. “The way everyone pulled together shows us what’s possible in small rural towns where the ethos is to look after one another. We were glad to catalyze that.” The Belfast Soup Kitchen, which works county-wide, was one of the myriad of organizations that was supported by Waldo County Bounty’s efforts. Through donations from the Farm to Pantry and Veggies for All programs, the organization was able to distribute fresh local produce to those in need — in the hot meals it serves to guests Monday to Friday at the soup kitchen, delivered to veterans and the home-bound elderly, and distributed to them in weekly farm boxes and through open community produce distributions on weekends and throughout the harvest season. “Over the course of the pandemic, we’ve seen a surge in demand for all our services,” executive director Cherie Merrill says. “Waldo County Bounty’s tremendous efforts helped us meet that demand.” Learn more at waldocountybounty.org

Main St., Belfast; 207-338-4565; delvinos. com), have established themselves as long-running standbys. For more than a decade now, Delvino’s has plated up deeply satisfying heaps of Italianinspired pasta primo steaks and fine seafood. The mushroom sacchetti — little pasta pockets stuffed with porcini, portabella, and cheese, then drizzled with a peppery mushroom cream sauce— is a particular highlight, but it’s a menu with no wrong choices. Darby’s Restaurant (155 High St., Belfast; 207-338-2339; darbys-restaurant.com), meanwhile, knows no geographical bounds. Its mash-up menu of international comfort foods, from pad Thai to enchiladas to mac and cheese, is as inviting as the brick-walled dining room and well-worn wooden booths. Down the street, Rollie’s (37 Main St., Belfast; 207-338-4502; rolliesmaine.com) has been a beloved downtown staple for 50 years, for everything from its signature cheese steaks, burgers, and pizzas, to its views of the harbor from the tables on its outside deck. Down by the harbor, Marshall Wharf Brewing Company (36 Marshall Wharf, Belfast; 207-338-2700; marshallwharfbrewing. com) focuses on liquid nourishment. The 15-year-old brewery, recently rebooted by new owners, pours eclectic, consistently spot-on suds, from hazy IPAs to German-style smoked beers to oyster stouts, that pair perfectly with a charcuterie plate or hot pretzels in the covered waterfront beer garden. And of the area’s many restaurants, perhaps none is so closely tied to the land as Chase’s Daily (96 Main St., Belfast; 207-338-0555; chasesdaily.me). The second generation of the back-tothe-lander Chase family, whose farm is in Freedom, opened the hybrid bakery, farm market, and restaurant in Belfast’s former Odd Fellows Hall in 2000. They’ve rejiggered the precise balance over the years — lately, it’s been breakfast and lunch, plus weekly pizza dinners — but Chase’s has always been a place for fresh-off-the-farm produce, whether buttercup squash baked into an empanada or heirloom tomatoes plump and ripe for taking home. It doesn’t get much more Waldo County than that. •

uring the two decades that Laura Brown spent summers in Northport, Arts in the Park in Belfast was a favorite annual tradition. “I couldn’t believe the skill and the quality of the handmade work being done by artists from all over Maine,” she says. “And I knew that this was the tip of the iceberg.” rown moved to elfast for good five years ago, and after buying a historic 1867 brick building in downtown Searsport last year, she opened Trove, a shop to showcase local artisans’ work. “There’s so much local talent here, I just wanted to create a venue that really celebrates their work,” says Brown. Brown opened Trove housewares last summer, and the exposed-brick interior offers a perfect rustic backdrop for her wide array of goods, which range from ceramics made in Portland, to bee balm and organic nettles tea and body scrubs made from ingredients grown nearby in Waldo County. he loves helping customers find ust the right item, and even offers Facetime shopping sessions for those who need or want to shop from home.

With an eye for the one-of-a-kind, and a customer-first ethos rown fits right into Waldo County’s eclectic retail scene, which includes a fresh mix of newcomers as well as long-timers who have thrived here for decades serving locals’ needs for special occasions as well as everyday essentials. The Lupine Cottage (7 Old Searsport Ave., Belfast; 207-338-4300; lupinecottage.net), established in 2004, carries the unique handiwork of more than 50 Maine-based makers, which have been hand-picked through a highly selective vetting process. The two-story cottage is open yearround, and offers classes in knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Yo Mamma’s (96 Main St., Belfast; 207-338-4884; yomammas.com), which features everything from throw rugs to artisan stationery to baby clothes, also opened in 2004. The Purple Baboon (31 Front St., Belfast; 207-338-6505), a clothing and souvenir shop, has been in operation for 21 years. Coyote Moon (54 Main St., Belfast; 207-338-5659; coyotemoonmaine.com) has been a local destination since 1990. Longtime customer Lisa Fagin bought the shop from founder Michelle Walker last year.

“Each business here is unique and has found its own niche, and residents and visitors have come to appreciate that very much,” Fagin says. COLONIAL THEATRE

rom the 1868 Opera House to the art deco marquee of the 1912 Colonial Theatre, relics of Belfast’s long tradition of performing arts are everywhere. As the county seat, Belfast was a destination for national acts like circuses, and vaudeville shows, and it has always been a place where home-grown theater, music, dance, and performance groups have flourished.

Ando Anderson, who launched the Belfast Summer Nights effort in conjunction with a team of fellow musicians, with support from the city, credits the city’s wealth of talented musicians of all genres and instruments, the critical mass of audiences who want to see live performances, and city leaders who had the vision and the courage to let the event go on.

A bevy of dancers, musicians, actors, and performers from a wide array of traditions thrives in Waldo County today. Five theater groups, including the Belfast Maskers, Everyman Repertory Theatre, Midcoast Theater Company, Marsh River Theater, and The Playhouse, perform in the area throughout the year. The Colonial Theatre shows art-house films and blockbusters. The Belfast Flying Shoes offers a variety of participatory music and dance events building on traditions from around the world. Come July, Belfast Summer Nights concerts fill city streets with music and merriment.

“Belfast is just special in that way,” he says.

“Belfast is just this inclusive type of place where the arts have always thrived,” says Meg Nickerson, artistic director for the Belfast Maskers, the community theater group that started in 1987.

Continuously adapting and improvising has been the key to sustainability, particularly in the last two years, as the pandemic forced all the performing arts groups to rethink how to connect with audiences in safe, fun ways. The Maskers, for instance, brought their shows outside. Midcoast Theater Company developed a series of audio dramas, which its actors recorded and the theater posted online, then did two performances in its 2021 season. The Everyman Repertory Theatre, an 11-year-old professional troupe, had to cancel its live performances, but partnered with the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland to produce short audio stories that animate paintings in the museum’s collection. Belfast Flying Shoes hit pause on community contra dances and jamborees, but

expanded its outreach programs to local schools, virtual music lessons to the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center, and outdoor concerts at local retirement communities. It also held Sunday-afternoon concerts in Steamboat Landing Park, laying out purple mats where people could dance to the music on their own from a safe distance. With the help of grant funding, the Belfast Flying Shoes also recorded their performances for broadcast on the local public-access channel. While much is in flux for the 2022 season, leaders of the local performingarts community say that the pandemic sparked creative ways to deliver on their mission. Even if they aren’t doing the exact type of performance they imagined, the kind of creativity and flexibility is in keeping with the same spirit in which the groups were founded. “It wasn’t contra dancing but it was this other thing that brought people together,” says board secretary Chrissy Fowler. “Participatory communitybuilding activities are the foundation on which the group was founded back in 2005. There’s no one way to do that. And it’s stretched us to find new ways to do it more effectively and better.” •

Belfast Harbor Fest offers the community a multi-day event honoring the maritime heritage of Maine’s midcoast and promotes the City of Belfast as an adventure destination for people of all ages and abilities. The National Boatbuilding Challenge is the centerpiece of the Belfast Harbor Fest, continuing with the competition that started here in 2007. Home builders Cody Keithan and Bruno Borzino of K Construction in Belfast won the World Championship in Georgetown, South Carolina in 2017. They repeated as World Champions in 2018 and 2019 and expect to be back this year as friendly competitors. Harbor Fest will begin Friday, August 19, with Evening by The Bay; a Rotary-sponsored auction that benefits a local charity. Join us for an evening of fun at the United Farmers Market and a chance to bid on valuable items. Saturday starts with Harbor Fest’s traditional Blueberry Pancake Breakfast at 7:30am and a 5K “Bug” Run at 8:30am. All weekend long local craftsmen and other vendors – including the popular Belfast Harbor Fest souvenir shop – will display, demonstrate and inform while food merchants help keep visitors well fed. The National Boatbuilding Challenge begins Saturday at 11am with two-person teams having four hours to build a 12-foot Passy Skiff, which is judged for construction time and quality. This year each building pair will be under its own tent. At 4pm, completed skiffs go into Belfast Harbor for a relay race that rounds out the contest, with prizes awarded right after the rowing. Other Saturday events include the popular Boat Gear Swap, and Belfast’s award-winning Come Boating! will stage its 20th Annual Regatta, a four-mile rowing race into the Bay and back along the coastline to the finish at Steamboat Landing. Harbor Fest includes fun events for the whole family. Games, booths, and tours of local businesses provide entertainment for all. Saturday morning, kids of all ages can get up close and personal with industrial machines at our Touch-A-Truck event. Saturday afternoon, Belfast Parks and Rec will sponsor a puppet show featuring the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. During the day you can listen and dance to live music by local entertainers at the Gazebo. Peruse our Adventure Boating Exhibition – a collection of kayaks, canoes, small sailboats, rowing sculls, paddleboards and outdoor boating equipment – that will spark your imagination with ways to access Penobscot Bay. Sunday starts mid-morning with Harbor Fest’s famous and entertaining Cardboard Boat Races. Prizes are awarded in multiple classes and spectators enjoy guessing which boats will float or sink. At noon, Waldo County’s Habitat for Humanity holds its Lobster Gala fundraiser featuring your choice of lobster, steak, hamburgers or hot dogs. Music provided by local blues favorites, The Juke Rockets. For more information on all Belfast Harbor Fest activities: belfastharborfest.com or Belfast Harborfest on Facebook Belfast Rotary Club, now in its 97th year serving the people and communities of Belfast and Waldo County, has presented Harbor Fest for 12 of its 15 years with the support of dozens of sponsors and the thousands of visitors who attend each year. All proceeds from Rotary events, totaling more than $100,000 each year, benefit local charities, families and student scholarships.

Launched in 1995 and run by the Belfast Parks and Recreation Department and the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce, Arts in the Park has grown into a marquee event for the city, and a kickoff to its busy summer arts season, as well as a beloved annual gathering for the region’s artists. More than 100 artists typically participate in the two-day juried show, which is held on Steamboat Landing downtown. Waterfall Arts, which is based at the Governor Hugh Anderson School near downtown, reaches nearly 8,000 people each year, offers more than 50 classes and workshops, and holds dozens of events and exhibits. Members of the public can rent time in its wet darkroom or its clay and printmaking studios. Last year, it opened a state-of-the-art glassblowing studio — the only such public studio in the state. On Fridays from June to September, Waterfall Arts hosts the Belfast Farmers’ Market and brings in a rotating cast of local artists to show their work.

n the early weeks of summer in downtown Belfast, locals can always count on a few sure signs that peak season is about to get underway. Daylight starts stretching until 9 p.m., the Passagassawakeag River starts to bustle with sailboats, kayaks, and the six-person pilot gigs from Come Boating, and Steamboat Landing, the grassy park that sprawls to the water’s edge, starts filling up with painters potters sculptors, goldsmiths, and other artists for Arts in the Park, a local tradition for 25 years. “It’s the kick-off event for the season,” says Belfast goldsmith Pamela Hitchcock. “The region has such an

incredible community of artists, and this is a great opportunity to connect.” Arts in the Park, started in 1995 as a fundraising project by Friends of Belfast Parks, has grown over the years and raised monies that have helped fund a variety of park amenities for the community to enjoy. Now, the event is co-hosted by the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the City of Belfast’s Parks and Recreation Department. This partnership works to connect and promote a wide array of Maine artists to strengthen the local creative economy. The event is just one of a myriad of

TIMBERSTONE RUSTIC ARTS regular happenings around Belfast that galvanize the region’s considerable creative community and provide a wide array of makers a chance to connect with clientele and one another. At Fourth Friday Art Walks during the summer, locals and visitors can peruse the galleries and studios of local artists. Shores Ocean Campground for Fiber Arts College workshops, classes, and demonstrations. The Common Ground Country Fair, the annual celebration of rural living held since 1977, draws hundreds of artisans to nearby Unity. Artists have gravitated to the region for decades, attracted by its stunning landscape and the warm, welcoming group of other creative types who put down roots here. In the 1980s and 1990s, many were drawn to the area by Artfellows, a cooperative gallery launched as a hub for contemporary art in the Odd Fellows Hall on Main Street. More than 50 artists showed their work there, including some of Maine’s bestknown artists, like Neil Welliver and Alex Katz. “So many artists found that Belfast and the surrounding towns had this element of beauty, a sense of community, and other artists to collaborate with and support, and it was incredibly inexpensive to live,” says Kim Fleming, executive director of Waterfall Arts. “There’s this critical mass of people who understand how important art and creativity is, and how it brings this energy to the entire area.” Potters Cory and Adam Bogosian visited Waldo County from Massachusetts in 2015 to check out the studios of local potters. While they were here, they had lunch at Chase’s Daily, a beer at Three Tides Bar & Restaurant, and immediately started looking for an apartment. Two years later, they opened Belfast Clay Studio, which offers classes, private lessons, open studios, and workshops, just across the street from the Belfast Co-op. “I’ve met more working artists per capita than anywhere else I’ve lived,” Cory says. “Young and old, the arts scene here is unbeatable. We’re supported year-round by the community’s healthy desire to learn a new craft, or to hone skills in the studio. The tourist season is always a great influx but honestly we love the long, cold winter when we can enjoy the studio with the locals.” •

ike a lot of folks, Zach Schmesser fell in love with aine the first time he visited. After growing up in New Jersey, he was taken by Waldo County’s rural character, its rocky beaches, and the hive of activity in downtown Belfast. After graduating from Unity College, he lived in Bangor, Biddeford, then Portland. But when Schmesser and his wife — a Montville native — were ready to have kids, Belfast beckoned. “It’s small enough that people know their neighbors, but big enough to have amenities all year,” says Schmesser, 35, executive director of Our Town elfast the nonprofit downtown development group. Schmesser and his family, which now includes his threeyear-old daughter and one-year-old son, love living close enough to shops, restaurants, festivals, the parks, and the rail trail and Harbor Walk, while

still being close enough to the rural landscape they treasure. He’s heartened to see so many other young families, as well as young professionals, empty nesters, and retirees, putting down roots here too. “We have this great cross-generational community that includes young people who grew up here and stayed, young people who grew up here and have returned, as well as those folks who are discovering this area for the first time,” he says. “The area isn’t all just one thing, and that makes for this really rich experience of living here.” Schmesser is one of an increasing number of people who are discovering that in addition to being a fun place to visit in the summer, Belfast and the surrounding towns offer a quality of life that is hard to come by. There just aren’t that many places in aine or

anywhere where there’s so much year-round activity and unspoiled natural beauty within such easy reach. “There are so many fun places to explore without having to deal with the congestion,” says Dan Despain, who moved from San Francisco to Belfast in 2017. “The trees, ocean, and lakes are so beautiful, and the fact that you can take a ferry out to these islands is amazing.” Despain, like Schmesser, immediately felt at home in Waldo County. Despain’s husband, Jonathan Perkins, grew up in Belfast. When Despain’s high-tech company announced it was relocating from San Francisco to Dallas, shortly after the couple had come to own Perkins’ childhood home, Despain, 62, got a job as a senior associate for athenahealth’s population health data delivery team. “The pace of life in the Bay area, the churn, and the B E L FAS T M A I N E . They love tidepooling at Moose Point State Park, exploring Sears Island, and being close enough to Acadia to adventure there in the off-season. She loves stocking up for craft projects at Fiddlehead Artisan Supply and Heavenly Yarns, and shopping at the Belfast Co-op and the Green Store. “To know that I don’t have to shop at a big-box store is kind of amazing,” she says. “I feel great knowing that I’m buying local. I feel like I know these people, I see them every week, and they recognize my face when I come in.” Native Erin Herbig, 40, moved back to Belfast about 12 years ago, after attending Boston College and living in Nantucket, Los Angeles, Portland, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. “Until you spend time traveling and living in other places, you don’t realize that Belfast is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” she says. She also craved the warmth of the closeknit community and the opportunity to make a difference. “I realized I could make such a larger impact here at home than I could anywhere else,” she says. Erin Herbig, former Maine State Senator and current Belfast city manager.

competitiveness of the work environment were really taking a toll,” he says. He also enjoys this chapter of his career at Boston-based athenahealth, which employs a staff of 800 in Belfast. “We’re doing really exciting technical work, and people are always willing to take on a new challenge.” espain especially appreciates the warmth of being on a firstname basis with the owners of the local businesses. “Here, you get to know people as well as you want to, and have an impact,” says Despain, who grew up in Utah. “There’s a sense of history and continuity here that you don’t find in big western cities where there’s constant change. find that refreshing. Beth Lykling and her family were living near Waterville and driving to Belfast weekly so that their young daughter could attend a primitive-skills class here. They loved exploring the town, grabbing ice cream at Wild Cow Creamery on the Harbor Walk, and walking along the waterfront whenever they visited. They loved that there were so many community cultural events, like yoga in the park and contra dancing, as well as strong farming, permaculture, and home-schooling communities in the area. This area ust seemed to be filled with people to learn from and share knowledge with,” says Lykling, 44, a family physician. She now works at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, and the family moved to Searsport last summer.

By the time she returned, Belfast had changed dramatically from what it was in the 1980s and 1990s, when Herbig was growing up here. Galleries, shops, artist studios, and performing-arts groups were thriving in the city. The Belfast Co-op had expanded, Waterfall Arts had moved to Belfast, and companies like MBNA had brought hundreds of wellpaying jobs to the area. Maine Farmland Trust and the Belfast Farmers’ Market had moved downtown, and along with Unity’s Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and Common Ground Country Fair, created a center of gravity for the region’s farmers and food makers. Events like Belfast Summer Nights, Arts in the Park, All Roads Music Festival, Maine Celtic Celebration, and Belfast Harbor Fest were drawing scores of people downtown. “So many people in our community have put their expertise to work to put economic growth at the forefront and create this enchanting downtown that people want to visit,” she says. “But we also preserved this sense of grit and authenticity that makes Belfast so unique, and a place that people want to live and work.” Herbig has dedicated her life since then to serving the community. She was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2010, and spent a decade serving in the state government as a four-term state representative, including one term as House Majority Leader, and one term as a state senator representing Waldo County. In March 2020, Herbig became Belfast’s city manager. “I am so proud of how far we’ve come and where we’re headed,” she says. “It is an honor to serve as the city manager in Belfast and be part of the team that provides services to our citizens and visitors every day. We are stewards of Belfast and we will be for generations to come.”

“This was just obviously the place to come.” 48

Captain Nickels Inn Bed & Breakfast - Where Haute Meets Historic A Year-Round Seaside Escape in Searsport, ME Maine’s MidCoast evokes an explorer spirit with dramatic coastlines soothed by the Atlantic Ocean. Majestic schooners and lighthouses beckon adventure while Victorian villages draw you back to a time when life moved at the pace of a horse-drawn carriage. Tucked into a nook of Penobscot Bay away from the hustle and bustle, Captain Nickels Inn welcomes guests in seaside elegance, just as Captain Albert Vinal Nickels did in the late 1800’s. As a National Register of Historic Places home, the inn reignites a classic style while featuring renovated rooms and suites with touches that not only bring comfort and luxury, but a sense of stepping back in time. What will you love most? Italianate Style A winding brick path guides guests to towering wooden front doors where stained glass panels and brass lion-head knockers invite you to another era. Vintage chandeliers and marble fireplaces decorate wallpapered parlors. 10,000 square feet, 3 floors, and yet with only 9 guest rooms the inn feels like a luxury getaway just for you. Shimmering under the Maine sun, the newly restored cupola, lovingly referred to as the copper-topper by locals, is the crowning jewel of Captain Nickels Inn. For many years, the inn rested on a three-acre lawn that adjoined the bay. In 2021, an additional three-acres were added to the property. Guests may now enjoy a sprawling six-acres of private waterfront on the rocky coast of the Penobscot Bay. Enjoy a sunny summer day wandering through manicured gardens taking advantage of the many sitting areas. Intimate Stays Dawn and Cassidy had a lifelong ‘what if’ dream of owning a bed and breakfast. In 2019 ‘what ifs’ became ‘why nots’. Three years later, Captain Nickels Inn is a flourishing beacon of hospitality on New England’s coast. Each morning, a chef’s choice breakfast is presented by Cassidy with local touches and a splash of Southern inspiration. Dawn is always available to share details about the area with suggestions for must-do day trips, or to offer just one more cup of coffee. The newest accommodation exudes classic luxury. Stay in Captain Nickels’ office, now renamed as The Albert Nickels, where he once met with merchants and other captains. Lovingly restored with vintage authenticity and modern amenities - a walk-in jetted shower, intricate tiling, antique poster bed, and Persian carpet. As pretty as an oil painting, this Italianate Victorian embraces romanticism while welcoming you home, even if only for just a night. Beyond The Bay Perfectly located between Camden and Bar Harbor, Captain Nickels Inn provides a truly New England getaway. Beyond this seaside sanctuary is an area ripe for exploration. Call the inn home during your trip to Maine and use it as a hub to explore the rest of the coast!

YOU COULD CALL IT AN INSTITUTION. Rollie’s Bar and Grill, Belfast’s premier sports bar, has been serving up drinks, televised games, and hearty comfort food since 1972. Regulars are greeted with a ceramic stein for their frosty beverages, and the waiting list to get one of these cherished mugs is years long. Another sign of how many people love Rollie’s? When the old fire bell over the bar rings, it means another happy customer has tipped well - and the bell rings often. Ryan Otis, Rollie’s owner for the last decade, began working with the Rollie’s team back in 2004. Because he’s a dad to three young sons, Ryan has been working to evolve Rollie’s into a spot geared for the whole family. The place is now known for its burgers, local seafood, and friendly service as it is for the craft beers on tap and the non-stop sports broadcasts on state-ofthe-art flat screens. And the restaurant’s commitment to its community reaches far beyond its doors. Rollie’s is a proud sponsor of many local events, groups, and youth sports. Be sure to try the Rolliean’s Lager. One dollar of every draft sold supports programs and initiatives in the community, like the Waldo County YMCA and Our Town Belfast, that make Belfast a great place to live and visit. While some things at Rollie’s have changed in the last fifty-plus years, most things haven’t. You can still find a seat in an old wooden booth with your kids, and the back bar and coolers are still from a 19th-century sailing ship. You’ll still find people buying drinks for their neighbor or being able to strike up a conversation with a total stranger. You choose at Rollie’s how to spend your time. Bring a book, stay glued to the game, sip scotch or dig into come clam chowder. But, no matter how you spend your time there, you are sure to love it at Rollie’s.
