ROGER TORREY // BROOKS, ME

RESTING IS FOR THE BIRDS. JUST ASK ROGER.

When Roger suffered a stroke, he was rushed to Waldo County General Hospital. Once there, local ER doctors consulted with neurology experts at Maine Medical Center to save him. And save him they did. Thanks to the MaineHealth Telestroke Network, Roger made a quick recovery, and his neighborhood birds couldn’t be happier to have him back in the workshop. Compassionate care. Coordinated care. Through MaineHealth, you are connected to better.

Imagine a network of hospitals, health care providers, and specialists, built with your needs at the very center. We did – that’s MaineHealth.

eautiful winding roadways through picture-perfect small towns and rolling fields. Historic buildings telling stories of past-meetingpresent. Bustling markets and art studios. Lovely parks for relaxing. Waldo County is really wonderful. One of the things I treasure most about this region is how we value healthy living. There are countless trails, coastal nooks, ponds and hills for kayaking, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, skating and sledding. We work hard to preserve and maintain our beautiful natural expanses, and it pays off. For example, Penobscot Bay is one of the finest areas for sailing in the entire world. We also have one of the best small rural hospitals in the nation, and dozens of experienced practitioners of complementary modalities such as yoga, reiki, meditation and nutrition. Plus, our rural area produces some of the finest, freshest local foods anywhere, whether from newer small farms operated by young families making their mark or from multi-

And let’s not forget our diverse array of cultural spaces, from the bounty of museums (even one for old wood stoves!) to the galleries, festivals and home studios. I hope you’ll get out and enjoy Waldo County: Brooks, Unity, Belfast, Liberty, Lincolnville, Searsmont, Searsport— all of it! We are fortunate to have this region full of treasures, and we’re so glad to share it with you.

or as long as anyone can remember, the ring of the old fire bell has been cutting through the chatter at Rollie’s Bar and Grill in Belfast, signifying that another satisfied customer has left a substantial tip. And since July 2018, thanks to Rollie’s owner Ryan Otis, the same sound has celebrated children finishing treatment at Shriners Hospital in Boston and returning home. The son of two Midcoast Maine natives, Ryan was born and raised in Pennsylvania but moved to Maine for college and to help his grandfather at Weaver’s Bakery. In 2004, Ryan joined the team at Rollie’s, gradually becoming more involved with running the business before taking ownership in 2010.

6

BELFAST & THE WONDERS OF WALDO COUNTY

For decades, Rollie’s was known as a spot to take in a game over a beer or two with friends. But Ryan is father to three young boys, so under his ownership, Rollie’s has been undergoing a steady transformation from sports bar into a full-fledged family restaurant. “We strive to make consistently good food, from some of the finest burgers and Reubens around to locally-sourced seafood dishes,” Ryan says. Over the past several years, the draft list has expanded to include everything from perennial favorites like Bud Light to regional craft brews. Rollie’s bar, salvaged from a 19th-century sailing ship, and well-loved benches have been there since the place first opened in 1972, and now share the

space with brand-new flat screens. It’s a cozy blend that feels a bit like showing up at your aunt’s house for Thanksgiving when she’s set up an extra table in the living room—if your aunt also had a thriving catering business and a deck overlooking the harbor. When he’s not at Rollie’s, or spending time with his family at Acadia National Park or Old Orchard Beach, Ryan is active with the Anah Shriners of Bangor. Being a Shriner runs in Ryan’s family. “My dad and grandfather were both members before me,” Ryan says, “but I joined mostly because I love football and wanted to be involved in the Kora Shriner’s annual Lobster Bowl Classic.” Held each July, the all-star high school football game benefits the Shriners

Hospitals, allowing them to provide care for children regardless of ability to pay. Since January 2018, Ryan has served on the board of directors for Shriners Hospital of Boston, home to the only pediatric burn unit in New England. “I hope to never need it, but I’m glad it exists,” Ryan says. Many of Rollie’s fundraising efforts, including its Run for Kids, also benefit the hospital. And Ryan’s investment in children’s charities doesn’t end there. Rollie’s regularly hosts pancake breakfasts for organizations including Girl Scout Troop 2089, Searsport Little League and the Belfast Area High School Lions Baseball team.

LET IT SNOW! BY SALLY JASKOLD

hen the weather outside is frightful, it’s no wonder Mainers might want to sit near the woodstove and nip some Allen’s or hot apple cider. Last winter the Belfast area saw nearly 85 inches of snow fall from November to April; the average temp hovered around 25ºF. But the Midcoast has plenty of venues where you can mukluk about. So after shoveling the dooryard, get your wool on and go have some fun. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking. Public trails abound throughout the Midcoast. Nearly two dozen of the 27 preserves of the Coastal Mountains Land Trust accommodate cross-country skiing and snowshoeing—including sections in Prospect, Stockton Springs, Swanville, Searsport, Belfast, Northport, and Lincolnville—and can be explored

8

using the CMLT Trail Guide (coastalmountains.org). Belfast sports four of these trails, including the 2.3-mile-long Rail Trail along the Passagassawakeag, from the Armistice footbridge to the City Point Railroad Museum. In Union, the Carroll Farm Trail at Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery is brilliant for winter hiking, skiing, and

snowshoeing. The lower portion of the trail is on the intervale, the flat bottom land around the Medomak River (medomakvalley.org). Other favorite local trails include those at Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville traversing within the Camden Hills State Park, and the Georges Highland Path (georgesriver.org), a 50-mile network of low-impact footpaths in three regions: Headwaters (Montville), Central (Camden, Rockport, Searsmont), and Saltwater (St. George and Thomaston).

The Legend of BROKE NECK SANTA

He’s just always been that way. —Belfast Fire Chief Jim Richards

Ice skating and curling. Practice your figure eights and puck shots at Belfast’s High Street Ice Rink at the Waterfall Arts side yard; weather permitting, the outdoor rink is open 7am–10pm daily. Another sweet skating venue is Kirby Lake (“The Muck”) at Miller and Lincolnville Avenues, where locals bring their own shovels to keep the ice clean (cityofbelfast.org). At the Belfast Curling Club, established in 1959, it’s expected that you’ll be cold but sweepingly courteous. This volunteer-based club houses three sheets of ice and is open November through April. View the club’s calendar for annual bonspiels and other events (belfastcurlingclub.org).

Downhill skiing. The Camden Snow Bowl invites you to “ski the sea,” with ocean views, nearly 1,000 feet of vertical elevation, 20 runs, and a 4,000-foot triple lift; ski instructors moonlight as schooner captains. Just 25 minutes from Belfast, the bowl is also home to the only remaining gravity-operated 400-foot toboggan chute in the country. Each February the U.S. Toboggan National Championships are held here—thrilling, madcap competitive racing in costume (chuters dress as Legos, panda bears, mermaids, you name it) during a weekend of zaniness that also hosts a Cardboard Box Derby offering prizes for Fastest Box, Best Crafted Box, Best Costume, and Most (People?) in a Box (camdensnowbowl.com).

Every year, a couple weeks before Thanksgiving, the Belfast Fire Department heads downtown to hang the city’s Christmas lights, along with several cherished vintage plastic Santa decorations, one of whom has become the stuff of local legend, earning the nickname Broke Neck Santa for his jaunty—or partially decapitated?— appearance. Santa and his mates have been watching over Belfast’s streets every Christmas since the 1950s, when they were purchased already gently used by the local firefighters association. Fire Chief Jim Richards affectionately recalls that every winter since at least 1968, when he joined the department, Broke Neck Santa has been hung on High Street for the holidays, but he just can’t be attached in a straightaway manner. Look for him if you’re in Belfast for the holidays. (Broke Neck Santa keeps up with the times: you can also Like him on Facebook.)

The Belfast area also hosts a variety of winter events, including the Belfast Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Whoopla!: featuring events such as an ice ball, chili cook-off, pancake breakfast, and many outdoor activities, including cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding on the Commons, and snowshoe hiking around town (belfastmaine.org).

10

BELFAST & THE WONDERS OF WALDO COUNTY

Belfast Curling Club belfastcurlingclub.org

When the Christmas holidays come around again you can look for Belfast Parks and Recreation’s Holiday on the Harbor (which hosts Santa’s arrival by boat and offers hot chocolate on tap); Boothbay Railway Village’s North Pole Express; and New Year’s by the Bay (nybb.org), a chemfree family-focused celebration featuring indoor music venues and a midnight bonfire on the beach. Other snowy possibilities include snowmobiling and ice fishing, winter fat biking (buy a bike at Side Country Sports!), winter birding (audubon.org) and glacier bars (samosetresort.com), so that when winter in Maine gets fierce, you can get fierce, too. Just think of Broke Neck Santa as your muse for winter survival.

YOUR PERFECT AUTUMN LONG WEEKEND IN THE MIDCOAST BY ARIELLE BYWATER SIMONE

It’s no secret: the Common Ground Country Fair, held every third weekend after Labor Day by the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association (MOFGA) on its gorgeous permanent fairgrounds in Unity, is a bucket list event. From its humble beginnings in 1977, this Unity festival has grown to welcome more than 60,000 tree-hugging attendants each year for three days of peace, love and manure-tossing. (Don’t ask; just look for “Harry S. Truman games” on the fair schedule.)

BELFASTMAINE.ORG

15

PHOTO: JOHN WILLIAMS

PHOTO: RACHEL EPPERLY

If you’ve never been to Common Ground, you have to go. And even if you have been, you’ve probably been so busy eating tofu fries, buying goat’s milk soap and cooing at the lambs to explore what lies just beyond the parking fields. It’s worth bookending your fairgoing experience with some extra time so that you can wander around Unity, a small town of 2000 and home to an environmental college, and other local spots. Don’t forget your camera—the leaves will be spectacular.

16

BELFAST & THE WONDERS OF WALDO COUNTY

1 2

Here’s our insider’s guide to spending the Common Ground weekend in the area: Day One (Thursday): As the saying goes, slow down-—you’re in Maine. Change into your Bean boots and go for a walk. Maybe take time to find some apples at the height of their season: the farmstand at Hillcrest Orchards over in Winterport will be in full swing. While in Winterport, check out the Old Winterport Commercial House antique shop and hunt for treasures. Grab lunch at the new Bantam Café on Main Street—and save room for fresh-baked pie! Once back in Unity, make sure to stop by the Unity Pond Pottery studio. Robert and Wendy Esposito are delightful characters, and would love to show you the amazing things they create on their wheels. If you’re still up for more, check the Unity College events schedule to see if there are any concerts or lectures open to the public that evening. Day Two (Friday): Spend the whole day at Common Ground. Late September in Maine can range from summery heat to raw chill to gusting rain storms,

sometimes all in one day, so get there early, bring a reusable water bottle, dress in layers, and pace yourself so you can take in as much as possible. Give yourself lots of breaks: duck into a musical performance for a spell, sit down for a meal of delicious food from the vendors, and attend a workshop. Don’t miss the Youth Enterprise Zone tent for high-quality gifts, cookies and more made by Maine’s entrepreneurial and talented kids. Day Three (Saturday): Start your morning at 93 Main, a homey cafe that serves locally-roasted coffee alongside real bagels smeared with cream cheese from the cud-chewing ladies at Springdale Farm in nearby Waldo. If you fall in love with the bacon on your breakfast sandwich, make sure you stop by the Charcuterie, an off-the-grid, Amish-run spot that provides the meats to the coffeehouse and which NPR called a “gourmet haven in the woods.” It’s only open a few days a week, and of course has no web presence or phone, so do your research ahead of time to make sure you don’t miss it—and its locally famous donuts.

4 18

Day Four (Sunday): Hungry for more organic fairground goodness? Go back for a second loop at the fair. If you missed seeing the cute farm animals on display or the sheepdog demonstration, go see those. If you didn’t get to try contradancing, try it. If the Indian Pudding stand ran out on the first day, get there early this time. If your kids didn’t get to march in the extravagant vegetable parade, make sure to line up for costumes. If you didn’t buy all your holiday gifts, do some shopping at the excellent artisan vendor booths. Just don’t forget to fuel up on delicious herbal chai to keep your energy going throughout the day.

BELFAST & THE WONDERS OF WALDO COUNTY

5

Day Five (Monday): Wake up with a homestyle breakfast at Mammie’s Country Kitchen. If you’ve lucked out with the weather, grab some picnic

provisions at the well-stocked Market of Unity. Pack it up and take a hike on the CommUnity trails system to find a quiet spot with a gorgeous view: the college, a local land trust and other locations offer well-maintained public trails, which you can research via the Unity Barn Raisers’ website. Or book a custom guided expedition ahead of time--a hike, kayak or climb--with North Star Adventures. Those who enjoy slightly more raucous outings may want to stop by Chase Toys to check out their selection of snowmobiles and ATVs. All that fresh air will guarantee a good night’s sleep.

Our region has long been known for its wealth of small farms, and that picture is only getting brighter. A 2012 agriculture census showed Waldo County’s number of farms up by nearly 50% from 2007 to 2012: there are over 600 farms on record here! And with over 130,000 acres of our rich soil currently owned by farmers, that means that almost a third of the land you walk on here is farmland. BELFAST HARBOR FEST AUGUST 16 -18, 2019

The National Boatbuilding Challenge is the centerpiece of the Belfast Harbor Fest. This 12th Annual Harbor Fest will be the second year that the World Championship will be contested in Belfast as part of the competition. Local builders Cody Keith and Bruno Borzino, of K Construction won the Championship in Georgetown, SC in October 2017, bringing the Championship contest home to Belfast, where they repeated as World Champions again last August.

5K “Bug” Run at 8:30, & Exhibits and Vendors at 9. The National Boatbuilding Challenge begins at 11am with builders (two-person teams) having four hours to build a 12 foot Passy Skiff, which is then judged for quality. At 4pm, a relay race completes the contest. Prizes are awarded at Saturday’s BBQ Awards Banquet which follows the boat races.

Harbor Fest starts on Friday evening with An Evening by The Bay; a Rotary sponsored event to benefit Waldo CAP’s program to provide transportation for local Kidney Dialysis patients. This event features both Live and Silent Auctions of Artworks, Crafts and other valuable items donated by Belfast’s best artists, artisans and generous citizens. Food tastings are featured from local restaurants and our bar is catered by Front Street Pub. Of special note, this year’s auction will be highlighted by the original painting featured in our 2019 Harbor Fest poster, painted by this year’s featured artist, Susan Tobey White.

Family Fun includes a bounce house, marine touch tank, knot tying, face painting, a rain gutter regatta and of special note, a Touch-a-Truck event featuring all types of fun vehicles to explore. Enjoy music from 10 to 4. Also featured is our Classic Boat Show, both on land and on the water. Some boats will even be offering free sails on the Bay. Throughout the weekend local craftsmen and other vendors display their wares and several food merchants help keep our visitors well fed. At 3pm Saturday, Belfast Parks and Rec is sponsoring a Puppet Show featuring the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. This is fun for the whole family and has been a standing room only show for years.

At Noon Saturday, Belfast’s Come Boating! will stage their 19th Annual

Regatta, a four-mile rowing race into the Bay and back along the Coastline to the finish at Steamboat Landing. There will be a preliminary youth race at 10:45 am. The club also offers free community rows Sunday afternoon in their Cornish Gigs. Sunday starts with the famous Cardboard Boat Races. Come early to choose your favorite entry. Prizes are awarded in multiple classes. At noon, Waldo County’s Habitat for Humanity holds its fundraising Lobster Gala featuring your choice of lobster, steak, hamburgers or hot dogs. Music is provided by the award-winning Juke Rockets. Belfast Rotary, now in its 93rd year is presenting the Belfast Harbor Fest for the 10th time, thanks to our great sponsors and the thousands of visitors who attend each year. All proceeds from our Rotary events are used to benefit local charities, families and student scholarships, contributing nearly $100,000 annually. Belfast Harbor Fest is Rotary’s commitment to celebrate and honor Belfast’s Maritime tradition and at the same time raise money to assist our charitable giving. aldo County—with its small farms and busy harbor— evokes a raw natural beauty that’s matched by the rugged individualism of the people who live and work here. Sure, we appreciate the finer things in life, but not necessarily in ways that follow current trends in conspicuous consumption. Around these parts, a sturdy canvas tote carries as much status—if not more—than a Gucci bag, and in our shops and homes, well-priced luxury items sit on shelves next to everyday essentials. Given the Belfast area’s current hip caché, it may or may not be surprising how many premium goods and services are packed into this region. For this

round-up, we looked for exceptional service, exclusive wares—and a differentiating “cool factor.” It’s so nice when you don’t have to trek to a big city for bohemian glam, artist-made treasures or a dose of spa pampering.

Dress Yourself Worried your old-faithful wardrobe isn’t cutting it? Make Belfast your port of call for a rejuvenating update, and start with the fundamentals. At City Drawers, undergarments play the star role, and they’re available in an accommodating range of sizes, styles and prices. This pretty boutique on Main Street in Belfast gets raves for its bra fittings, no appointment necessary. The fittings are free, fun and oh so uplifting.

Man On Main

Sonya's Skin Care & Nails

For a walk on the dapper side, City Drawers’ companion store, Man on Main, is right next door. You can choose from the shop’s selection of casual menswear or design your own shirt or tux from the collar down to the cuffs. Made-to-measure orders are guaranteed to fit, at the same prices you’d find for off-the-rack fashion from the mall. Just across Main Street is Katwalk, an au courant boutique that caters to hip, young (and not-so-young) fashionistas. Style tip: Check out Judy P’s made-inthe-USA designer dresses and tops. They layer well, never need ironing and flatter the figure. If you can’t find what you want on a hanger, Katwalk’s stylish staff will guide you in choosing from the 18 styles, 30+ colors and extended sizes available from Judy P by special order.

BELFAST & THE WONDERS OF WALDO COUNTY

If you love scoring a one-of-a-kind statement, check out Justine Consignment Boutique, also on Main Street. The shop’s owner, Haley Merchant, took over the store last year, and stocks an ever-changing selection of carefully selected shoes and boots, gently-used garb, scarves, jewelry and special-occasion wear. Says Haley, a metalsmith and jewelry designer, “I’m drawn to natural fibers—silk, wool, linen, leather, cashmere—and ethically-made clothing that tells a personal story.” Her coterie of consignors range in age from 15 to 80 years old, and the racks often contain stunning vintage pieces and designer labels one rarely finds in Maine. Just steps away, Sonya’s Skin Care & Nails blends an uptown ambiance with a welcoming vibe that starts with

Sonya herself. The spa’s owner loves roughing it outdoors with her family, but her abiding passion is “making people feel special and pampered.” She says, “there’s no reason a facial treatment can’t be affordable.” Check out Sonya’s full menu of spa services (waxing is a specialty) and her top-notch brands of skincare and makeup. The spa carries natural cosmetics from Jane Iredale and OSEA, a seaweed-infused line of natural skincare that’s organic, non-toxic and never tested on animals. Hint: The spa is generous with samples. New glasses can transform your “look”—for better or for worse depending on the frames you select. “Fitting eyewear is an art,” says Dr. Amy Marnecheck, optometrist-owner of Seebreeze Family Eyewear, Belfast’s

only full-time optical shop. “Your personal style, vision and comfort all come into play.” Her experienced staff can help you fine-tune your choices for a perfect fit. Seebreeze offers a nice selection of frames, from value lines to designer brands with a conscience. If you buy an Eco frame, for example, the California-based parent company will plant a tree. (So far, that’s 1.5 million trees and counting.)

Dress Your Home In defiance of the trend toward mass-produced lookalikes, our region offers a bounty of artisan-crafted decor and rare goods for the home. At Belfast Bay Shade Co., on the top floor of the Belfast post office, Dina Petrillo is attracting international attention for her hand-printed kobo and linen

lampshades. A printmaker and sculptor, Dina celebrates the area’s beauty by incorporating natural motifs—growth rings of a tree, tiny ridges on a leaf, coastal and autumnal hues—into the block prints that enliven her lampshades, linens, pillows and floor cloths. Belfast Bay Shade welcomes at-home consults and custom projects of all types. In his wooded Montville workshop, Stuart Loten of Loten Art Lighting uses an intricate silk-painting technique to create his free-flowing, botanically inspired silk shades; the lamp bases he welds from steel. To keep up with demand, Stuart recently expanded his signature collection of multi-tiered chandeliers and introduced a new line of hand-painted silk scarves. Visit his new on-site retail gallery space for an illuminating (!) tour of his latest creations.

Located south of Belfast on Route 1, the traditional American furniture maker Windsor Chairmakers draws visitors from around the world to its historic five-acre homestead. The original old barn now serves as a workshop where you can watch the crew handcraft custom chairs, dining tables, beds, buffets, desks and benches. Explore—or buy—furnishings based on authentic Shaker styles in the circa 1800 farmhouse, now a showcase. Tip: The ever-accommodating staff will loan you sample boards so that you can try out different woods and finishes in your own home before purchase. Perry’s Home Furnishings & Design, on Belmont Avenue/Route 3 just outside downtown Belfast, is another mecca for furniture seekers. Inside the Perry family’s handsomely converted

This personalized service is free—and a first in the state of Maine. I’m only recently a citizen of Belfast, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned since arriving, it is that although it might take some effort to get to know the place, or to find the elements that fit your needs, there is unmistakable goodness here. You just have to know where to look.

5A

3A These public pieces of visual art are charming because they make you work for your reward—as does this spirited little city. Belfast is best appreciated on foot. If you walk around, friends and strangers will greet you, and you’ll also have the opportunity to notice the cat near a purveyor of spoons, or the tromp l’oeil window painted into the bricks. And the mural covering a hard-to-find wall near the harbor suggests scientific DNA, an apt metaphor for the deep connections in this community.

T

he energy of creative minds and spirits is palpable in Belfast, from the ornamental architectural elements of the 1900s adorning buildings and storefronts to the reflective blue waters of Belfast Bay where working fishing boats, “fitted-out” yachts and masted schooners tug impatiently at their moorings, awaiting their next venture out to sea.

ART FOR ALL BY ELISABETH INGOLDSBY

Perhaps this is why Belfast has become a magnet for imaginative and inventive souls, and why so many artists, studios, and fine art galleries now call this place home. While some downtown galleries have been fixtures here for decades, new artists and galleries are popping up all the time—a sure sign of the health and vitality of Belfast’s creative community. The perfect city for walking, a self-guided gallery tour is a great way to spend the day and get to know this place better. Begin at the very end of Main Street near the harbor, and taking a right, find Gail Savitz’ Front Street Pottery. If you are looking for a special wedding gift, check out Gail’s decorative porcelain eggs and whimsical anthropomorphic garden sculptures. Need something more functional? Gail’s work also includes teapots, vases and other ready-touse pieces. Back on Main Street, stop by the Chamber of Commerce Office located at 14 Main Street (the Consumers Fuel Co. building) for a warm welcome and a handy street map. Then head down a pathway adjacent to their office to the charming, rustic Finch Gallery. Owner Jerri Finch, Belfast resident and artist for 35 years, opened her cheery gallery in 2015. Her oil paintings are beautifully bold in subject, brush strokes and color. Continuing up Main Street to High Street, turn left and look for Local Color. The cooperative gallery, which just opened in May 2018, promotes 15 Midcoast artists working in a variety of styles and mediums, with exhibits rotating monthly. Back at the corner of High and Main Streets is the Parent Gallery. In its 17th year, the space features Neal Parent’s striking black and white photographs, capturing the essence

Opened in 2017, the Belfast Clay Studio’s workshops, kids’ classes and independent studio hours allow you to experiment in ceramics and pottery. Just up the road on High Street at Waterfall Arts, a full schedule of instruction and events give everyone the chance at hands-on art practice in a re-purposed 1935 elementary school.

of the Maine coast and its people. The gallery also features pastels and oil paintings by Joanne Parent, stainless steel sculptures by Keith Maynard, hand blown glass by David Jacobson and finely crafted jewelry by Dan Bennett. It’s a great place to do some early holiday shopping for a loved one.

A few steps up Main Street keep your eye peeled for a metal tent sign on the sidewalk, the indicator that Susan Cooney’s Fine Art Studio is open. Go up the stairs to the second floor and you’ll likely find Susan at work creating her detailed graphite drawings of the Maine coast. Using photos as reference, she meticulously recreates intricate imagery with each careful stroke of the pencil: some of her larger pieces take 300 hours or more to complete. At the top of Main Street, take a right on Church Street to find Susan Tobey White’s studio. A relatively new addition to the scene, the working studio is the focal point of this space, with easels, paints and work in progress everywhere you turn. The walls of Susan’s studio and gallery are brimming with lively acrylics, many of which feature colorful figures enjoying music, dance and conversation.

PHOTO: CHRIS BATTAGLIA

Just a few doors up is The Belfast Framer, another longstanding business and home to the Betts Gallery. A small gem of a space, it focuses on innovative local artists, rotating shows every five to six weeks. From there, follow the aroma of fresh bread baking to Chase’s Daily and the Perimeter Gallery where, for 18 years, the Chase family’s farmto-table restaurant has been delighting customers with vegetarian food and an indoor market. The rustic brick walls of this soaring two-story space serve as the aptly named Perimeter Gallery, with edgy contemporary work by both Maine artists and those “from away” adorning the walls. Once you’ve grabbed a fresh pastry and coffee, head across Main Street to the Maine Farmland Trust Gallery, which celebrates the “culture” in agriculture, with excellent, world-class works of ecologically-minded art.

Finally, don’t miss Belfast’s Fourth Friday Art Walks, May through September plus a special holiday edition in December. They’re an excellent way to get to know the city’s cultural essence, with doors open late, live music, street performances, refreshments and the chance to chat with the artists. There is no better way to immerse yourself in Belfast’s art scene.

THE CROSBY CENTER

Belfast has long been one of Maine’s cultural gems, and with the newly reopened Crosby Center, the town now has a much-needed larger downtown venue for concerts, theater and more.

Built in 1923 as a school, the historic brick building later saw use as the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped. Most recently, in 2016, the site was reborn as a thriving event center with multi-use spaces. With a year-round schedule, the stage now hosts everyone from community theater, local dance performances, beloved Maine musicians to nationally renowned acts. In addition to the 450-seat main theater space, there is also a smaller, 100seat theater; conference rooms; and a commercial kitchen. All are available to rent to the public for meetings, weddings, festivals and more. Space permitting, overnight guests can be accommodated in the residential spaces upstairs, which offer a mix of privacy

and community, just a block from all that Belfast has to offer. All the Crosby Center spaces are ADA-compliant. A

picnic is, by definition, a carpe diem kind of affair: it works best with a certain amount of spontaneity. And when you live in a place where the weather is cold, rainy or buggy much of the year, you learn to carpe the heck out of the rare sunny diems you get. Herewith, a guide to making the most of precious picnic-perfect days in the Midcoast. First, you’ll need a basket: a nice, sturdy basket made of natural materials and big enough to hold a family-sized feast. Fortunately for you, Maine is the perfect place to find one. The People of the First Light—the Wabanaki tribes—have long held basketmaking as one of their premier arts, and thanks to the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance, this traditional craft is enjoying a resurgence, taught by traditional apprenticeship to the younger people of the tribes. Their artistry can be found at the website of the Wabanaki Marketplace, among other places. At the Belfast Farmers Market, look for the Hubbard Brook Farm & Baskets booth for more handwoven options—plus some yummy local breads, jams, chicken salad and other goodies to fill it with. Find hand-crafted cutlery and napkins at Conklin’s Maine Mercantile, so that your picnic basket goods can also become heirlooms.

alongside fine wines, luxury chocolate bars and imported olives. Or stop by Eat More Cheese for sumptuous gourmet dairy, a bit of pate and a jar of wholegrain mustard; then drop in at Chase’s Daily next door for a fresh-baked crown loaf on which to spread your soft brie. If, however, you are hoping to feed a horde of hungry teens, you may want to order a bunch of hearty take-out wraps at Bay Wrap. With exotic and delicious combinations such as the spicy pulled-pork Carnitas Way, the curry peanut and chicken To Thai For or the veggie chili Texans Nightmare, you can be sure no one will go hungry, and all are securely tucked into foil blankets for safe transport. But if you are planning a big family reunion kind of picnic, maybe you’ll do best to place a to-go order from Bell the Cat. The recently relocated locals’ favorite has something for everyone, and specializes in perfect sandwiches on locally baked Borealis bread. Their menu includes everything from the most scrumptious turkey-bacon melt you’ll ever eat to a classic Reuben to PB&J for the kiddos, plus tempting jars full of classic cookies and lots of icy drinks in the cooler.

Next, you’ll need provisions. Assuming you haven’t stocked up completely at the Friday Belfast Farmers Market or the Saturday United Farmers Market in town—both of which offer a gorgeous array of seasonal produce, cured meats, cookies and other picnic-ready items— you’ll want to venture elsewhere. Below are some ideas to get you started.

If by chance, after all these stops, you are still missing that one specific treat for your basket—be it guacamole or smoked salmon, a pint of berries or a bottle of Chardonnay—they will have it at the Belfast Co-op. Be sure to check out the deli case, which often carries ready-to-eat salads, chicken and other delicacies that can be easily packed up and handed over.

Is your picnic going to be of the high-end, grown-up, maybe-I’ll-pop-the-question variety? If so, Dot’s near Lincolnville Beach may be the place for you, where mouth-watering sandwiches, quiches and grain salads are artfully displayed

Now all you need is a place to picnic. And it couldn’t be easier to find one: Waldo County is loaded with beautiful al fresco options. From town parks to secluded backwoods spots, this area is rich in pastoral splendor.

Some of our favorites? If you're looking for lovely and well-maintained parks, spread your blanket out on the little beach at Swan Lake State Park in Frankfort—or at peaceful Mosman Park in Searsport, complete with playground and water views. Historic Fort Knox in Prospect allows you to pair your slice of pie with a tour of the fascinating grounds and the nearby Penobscot Narrows Observatory. You’ll likely have the place to yourself at the picnic tables tucked away by the Fort Point Light in Stockton Springs. For those who feel they have to earn the rewards in their baskets, walk the serene trails of Sears Island to find your own little cove or bit of grass where you can settle in and watch for birds. Or spend an hour on the water with

Come Boating, Belfast’s all-volunteer and free-to-the-public community rowing organization, and take it easy after you’re back on land at Belfast Commons, more often known as “Chicken Hill.” If you plan to organize a whole day around your picnic, make it a great one at Lake St. George in Liberty, where you can grill, swim and paddleboat to your heart’s content.

Whether the picnic of your dreams is a relaxing, low-key affair or an allday, action-packed excursion, there’s no better way to capitalize on the combination of first-rate nature and nourishment available in Waldo County. So put your basket by the door and be ready to head out as soon as Mother Nature cooperates!

Cheers!

STOCKTON SPRINGS MARGARITA, THE HICHBORN Start with a tequila beloved by Latino kitchen staff. Add top-shelf triple sec, kick things up a notch with locally grown chiles and drop in wild blueberries pickled on site in rice vinegar. It’s a sweet-salty-sour mix that also describes the vibe at this accessibly glamorous farm-totable restaurant: smooth, but with an elegant edge. As co-owner and chef Charlie Zorich says, “Our goal is to keep one foot in the past, acknowledging the rich history of this place, and one foot in the future, with modern takes on design, food and drink.”

MEANWHILE IN BELFAST AUTHENTIC NEAPOLITAN PIZZA

Meanwhile in Belfast serves authentic Neapolitan pizza, certified by the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana. Meanwhile strives to offer a farm-totable experience, with fresh salads, house-made pasta, wood-fired burgers, oysters and crudo, as well as daily specials. The menu changes according to season. Aside from what is imported from Italy, most ingredients are local and MOFGA-certified or organic, including fish and meat. Certified Master Neapolitan Pizza Chef Alessandro Scelsi was born and raised in Italy and has 15+ years experience as a pizza chef, garnered all over the world. He moved to Belfast in November 2014 to open Meanwhile, using his wood fire cooking knowledge and expertise to create a genuine food and culture experience.

Alessandro loves to bring history to the table: Meanwhile’s food is inspired by the micro-regional Italian and Mediterranean cuisine he grew up eating. He is proud to share these delights with his new neighbors. Meanwhile’s mission is always to serve fresh, simple and healthy food.

House at 2 Cross Street (entrance is from the back of the building), adjacent to downtown shops and the Harbor Walk. Meanwhile is a cozy restaurant with an open kitchen and outdoor patio seating facing the bay. The patio is pet-friendly, too!

Meanwhile also has an innovative and extensive signature cocktail program, a carefully curated Italian wine list representing most of the major regions, and a selection of champagne and highly rated European and local beers.
