BOB // OQUOSSOC, ME

ONCE SLOWED BY INJURY, WE HELPED BOB FLY AGAIN.

Bob never had much luck with injuries. Just a few years removed from a shattered left shoulder, he tore his right rotator cuff in the simple act of reaching up. Not wanting to go through surgery again, he pushed off treatment until the pain began to keep him from his greatest passion — fly fishing. After seeking treatment at Waldo County Medical Partners, he

was put on a plan that brought him back to full mobility. Great news for Bob, bad news for the fish of Kennaebago River. Compassionate care. Coordinated care. Through MaineHealth you are connected to better.

Imagine a network of hospitals, health care providers, and specialists, built with your needs at the very center. We did — that’s MaineHealth.

are we say “It takes a village?” The diverse economy and attractions of our region are sustained by the efforts of many. Local municipalities, often ruled by the timeless democracy of the town meeting, provide basic services and a sense of connectedness. An array support many community functions that are essential for our region, from food pantries to job training to transportation. And our local businesses give back to their community to an amazing scale — be it local builders, banks, restaurants, or yoga studios. Our Chamber of Commerce is privileged to be part of this economic ecosystem. More than a visitors bureau, we work hard to support our small, local businesses in meaningful ways. Long-standing traditions include our monthly Business After Hours networking and social events. We have also added a version of that, with monthly events run by and supportive of our community of younger businesspeople. We have two e-newsletters: one to help the community at-large stay informed, and also one to provide “news you can use,” just for businesses as they deal with planning, hiring, seasonality, and legislative changes. Training sessions, again supported and often provided by local businesses,

2

deliver important tips and tricks to our local managers so they don’t have to travel to stay up-to-date. The challenges of running a small business often limit owners and workers from getting out of the business to work on the business! Finally, promotion of our small businesses is a critically important Chamber role! Facebook, Instagram, brochures, rack cards, and email notices tell the stories of our local retail, food, services, and lodging members, to name just a few! Many do great on their own promotions as well, but many don’t gravitate to social media or broader promotions, so the Chamber’s efforts to extend their reach and deliver their message is additionally important in this busy world of ours! Our diverse business community, bolstered by a wide array of supportive agencies, organizations, and fellow businesses, is a beautiful thing to experience and be part of! We love Waldo County, as do so many of our visitors (and of course our locals)! Come experience the depth and breadth of this wonderful yearround region on Maine’s midcoast.

his year’s Annual Chamber Awards Night was more of a party than a formal ceremony, and there was a lot to party about and celebrate! The list of winners told a wonderful story about our community. The new Maine Ocean School won the New Business Award and is strengthening a legacy maritime industry by training our youth to be part Growth Award was won by an entrepreneurial young couple at Toddy Pond Farm, illustrating the diversity of our region’s economy. Pillars of our business community were honored: Mary Weaver of The Playhouse, Ryan Otis of Rollie’s Bar & Grill, and the Belfast Co-op. And we honored one of the most creative businesses in the region for the diversity of their contributions: Searsport Shores Ocean Campground. We had a grand time celebrating the amazing spirit we have across Waldo County!

ow does a largely rural corner of the country support a dining scene as vast, varied, and venerated as Waldo County’s? It’s all about heritage, about communities that have lived for generations close to the land and sea. Folks around Belfast have a penchant for savoring what each season has to offer — and for enjoying good times in good company, no matter the season. Locals and visitors might crack into lobsters on a dock in summer, huddle in fall over a farm-to-table brunch, and gather for burgers and pints in front of a cozy pub taste of the area’s culinary abundance. For an elegant date night, the white-tablecloth dining room at the Youngtown Inn (581 Youngtown Rd., Lincolnville; 207-763-4290; youngtowninn.com) offers a seasonal prepared by Parisian-born chef Manuel Mercier, who owns the inn with

aldo County has been at the center of Maine’s farmto-table movement since the get-go, when the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (mofga.org) formed in Unity in 1971. MOFGA — the country’s oldest and biggest state organic organization — still hosts the annual Common Ground Country Fair, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the county. And now, the area is home to legions of small family-run farms that offer guests numerous ways to experience a slice of rural life, whether through farm dinners or farm stays or onsite cafés. Plus, Belfast is home to two top-notch farmers’ markets, yet another opportunity for growers and consumers to get together.

They sell meat, milk, and farm-made yogurts, cheeses, and ice creams, plus raw honey from their beehives. They rent out a comfy cottage for agritourists. They run a summer camp. And throughout the summer, they host Friday-night farm

“We are thankful every day to be part of this community. We are delighted to have you visit us and we will take care of you in any way we can.” — ANTHONY & TINA

Some say that great ideas start on a napkin in a bar. In Delvino’s Grill & Pasta House’s case, it is true... The story begins in 2005 for the owners of Delvino’s, Anthony Jacovino & Tina DelSanto. Anthony went to The Lookout Pub (recently renamed The Front Street Pub) to visit his friend Katherine Loblein. The visit yielded an introduction to Katherine’s business partner, Tina DelSanto. As it turns out, Anthony and Tina were both looking for apartments… you guessed it, and Tina and Anthony became apartment mates and friends and fell in love! Then came the restaurant.

Fast forward a few years to The Lookout, again, where Tina meets Bruce Thomas,

Since Belfast was settled in 1770, it has served as the vibrant market center for rural Waldo County. Today, its retail scene is shaped by the region’s agrarian hippies and craftsmen over the past 50 years, its working waterfront, and a profound respect for independence and originality that endures. “A lot of people came here during the back-to-the-land movement in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and they became the community’s movers and shakers, so we place a lot of value on the homegrown,” says Barbara Klausmeyer, co-owner of Left Bank Books, a cozy, well-stocked shop that invites lingering and regularly draws Pulitzer-prizewinning authors for signings. “You see working boats tied up right “and that pretty much sums up the community as a whole: it has its elegant side, but it’s also unfussy, earthy, and a little funky around the edges.” If the character of the individual shops in Belfast feels decidedly old school in this era dominated by online and walkable downtown, you can buy everyday essentials like groceries, shoes, clothes, hardware, toys, and books from independent retailers. There are three bookstores, a specialty cheese shop, two farmers’ markets that run year-round, and a slew of gift shops. “That’s the unique thing about Belfast: It’s the central shopping destination,” says Dee Bielenberg, who owns Man on Main, a men’s clothing store, and City Drawers, a lingerie boutique.

Last summer, though, they moved back into the old church, now named the Basil Burwell Community

A relative newcomer to Maine’s theater scene, the Midcoast Actors Studio didn’t waste any time making a name for itself. In a review of a performance of Peter and the Starcatcher a couple of years ago, the Bangor Daily News pronounced the troupe on its way to being “Maine’s most professional community theater group.” Other past performances include Cabaret, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Crucible. The troupe also puts on an annual two-week youth summer camp that culminates in the performance of a musical. midcoastactors.org

BELMONT BOATWORKS There are a lot of great boat yards in midcoast Maine. It’s good company to be in, and when you talk to people involved with the various yards, the mutual respect is palpable. It takes a certain amount of nerve to plunk a new boatyard down in the middle of this community, but nerve is part of what Belmont Boatworks is all about. Belmont’s founder, Dan Miller, has been a long-term liveaboard, a professional wooden-boat builder, a licensed charter-boat captain, a heavy-equipment operator, and, more than once, an entrepreneur. Making a success of all these things requires a “can do” attitude, and as is often the case, the personality of the boss permeates the whole yard. “Can do” is the spirit of Belmont Boatworks. Beginning in 2012, the yard has made most of its living from doing boat work of all kinds, but if you need a church steeple removed, a city Christmas tree put up, a caboose renovated, a made for a Broadway play, or an airplane painted, what you get from Belmont is not hesitation, but delight. Belmont Boatworks is also unique in its encouragement of do-it-yourself customers,

Increasingly, Belmont’s customer base includes those boat owners whose priority is complete, personalized, mooring-to-mooring service. From the beginning, the yard has been in the boat-transport business, running two hydraulic trailers nationwide. They also run a crane truck for local jobs, and are dealers for the popular Beta brand of diesel engines. Belmont’s customers are not approach. The managers discuss each boat with its owners, provide free inspections of typical problem areas, assist the owners as needed to set their priorities, and then suggest an approach taking into account the customer’s budget

hen Lisa and Alex Pelling were looking for a place to put down roots, they had literally the entire globe to choose from. The natives of Yorkshire, England, spent three years traveling the world. They were considering Australia, but Belfast kept drawing them back.

ALEX PELLING; ALEXANDRA STEWART; BENJAMIN WILLIAMSON

“We simply couldn’t get it out of our minds that this was the place for us,” says Lisa, who is 38. “We loved the small, independent, quirky businesses, the unique restaurants, and the architecture. The positive, anything-is-possible vibe of the States really gripped our entrepreneurial side and the laid-back, local, independent vibe of Belfast gripped our homebody side. We knew we could be happy here and meet like-minded friends.” The Pellings, who bought a house in Belfast and launched the Back and Forth harbor cruises in 2018, are among a growing number of people of all ages who are putting down roots in Waldo County. Following waves of retirees and the here since the 1970s, Belfast and Waldo County have become a destination for those who are searching for a downtown that remains vibrant all year long, has plenty of work, school, and housing options, and offers easy access to the woods, water, and unspoiled countryside.

Vital Statistics

Some are drawn to the area by jobs, with organizations like Front Street Shipyard, athenahealth, Waldo County General Hospital, and Unity College, which have all expanded here. Others are attracted to the area’s agrarian DNA — where the Belfast Co-Op, Maine Farmland Trust, and Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) have all thrived. Alexandra and Francis Stewart were living in the Boston suburbs and vacationing in Maine when they fell in love with a 200-year-old farmhouse in Liberty, on 50 acres overlooking Lake St. George. The couple, who are 28, have revived the orchard, launched a farm stay, and opened Wild Grace Farm store and café last summer. “This area checked all the boxes,” says Alexandra, who grew up in California. “We wanted to be rural, but not too rural. We wanted to be near the ocean, but not right on it. We wanted to be in the woods, but not feel isolated. We really like being on Route 3 and feeling connected to both Belfast and Augusta. We have our privacy and the freedom to create more than we’d have in a bigger city. We get to know our neighbors.” Retired teacher Patsy Meisner, 69, and her husband moved to Belfast from Brunswick to be near their daughter, who settled in Stockton Springs. Meisner’s son has since moved here too. She treasures the galleries, open artists’ studios, multitude of downtown

festivals, the Harbor Walk, multiple farmers’ markets to get fresh, locally grown produce, and places like the Fiber College and Waterfall Arts, which offer classes and workshops. “It’s just a great jumping-off point for so many other wonderful parts of the area,” Meisner says. Susan Beemer, head of school for Cornerspring Montessori School in Belfast, moved to the region from Northampton, Massachusetts, four years ago. She and her husband — who works remotely for MIT in Boston — live in north Searsport. “We were looking for a great place to be outdoors, and the ability to be active in our communities,” says Beemer, 55.

families from as far as Idaho, searching for the same qualities of life that she’s found here — a rural setting, vibrant art and music scenes, as well as a strong sense of community, where people value volunteering. She likes having so many dinner choices in downtown Belfast, and the plethora of local shopping options. “We’re happy not to see big box stores, to have a local hardware store, and milk and bread,” Beemer says. “People are just so welcoming, and there isn’t a weekend that goes by when there isn’t lots of things to do.” •

YOU COULD CALL IT AN INSTITUTION. Rollie’s Bar and Grill, Belfast’s premier sports bar, has been serving up drinks, televised games and hearty comfort food since 1972. Regulars are greeted with a ceramic stein for their frosty beverages, and the waiting list to get one of these cherished mugs is years long. Another sign of how many people love Rollie’s? When the old fire bell over the bar rings, it means that another happy customer has tipped well—and the bell rings often. Ryan Otis, Rollie’s owner for the last decade, began working with the Rollie’s team back in 2004. Because he’s a dad to three young sons, Ryan has been working to evolve Rollie’s into a spot geared for the whole family. The place is now as known for its burgers, local seafood and friendly service as it is for the craft beers on tap and the non-stop sports broadcasts on state-of-the-art flat screens. And the restaurant’s commitment to its community reaches far beyond its doors. Rollie’s is a proud sponsor of many local events, groups and youth sports. Be sure to try their Rolliean’s Lager. One dollar of every draft sold is donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children-Boston. So belly up to the 19th-century sailing ship bar or find a seat in an old wooden booth with your kids. Buy a drink for your neighbor or talk to a stranger. Bring a book or stay glued to the game. Sip a scotch or dig into some chowder. No matter how you spend your time there, you are sure to love it at Rollie’s.
