B E L FA ST H A R B O R F E ST The Belfast Rotary Club Invites You to Celebrate the Boating Traditions of Belfast, Maine

August 18-20, 2017 Steamboat Landing and Heritage Park

The 10th National Boatbuilding Challenge, an event that has become a staple of August in Belfast, is a tradition you don’t want to miss! The Boatbuilding Challenge is the centerpiece of Belfast Rotary’s Annual Belfast Harbor Fest, a three-day celebration of all that is good about the Maine Coast and Belfast’s Maritime Tradition. The weekend starts with a launch party on Friday evening featuring the best of local bands and brews, presented by Three Tides and Marshall Wharf Brewing. During the Boatbuilding Challenge, a full day competition on Saturday, two person teams are allowed four hours to build a 12 foot Skiff. It is then judged for quality and finally the teams run a rowing relay race to prove its seaworthiness. Saturday’s events include a traditional Blueberry Pancake Breakfast, a 5K “bug

run”, kids’ activities including a bounce house, Live Marine Touch Tank, Touch a Truck Event, Knot Tying, Face Painting, Rain Gutter Regatta and more. There is music to enjoy from 10 to 4. Also featured is our Classic Boat show both on the water and on land. Over 25 boats are expected – some of which will be offering free sails in Belfast Bay. The Harbor Fest includes local craftsmen and other vendors displaying their wares and several food merchants help keep our visitors well fed throughout Saturday and Sunday. Belfast Come Boating!’s 17th Annual Rowing Regatta launches at noon with a 5-mile rowing race into the Bay and back along our coastline to the finish at Steamboat landing. Free community rows are offered throughout both Saturday and Sunday afternoons in their club owned Cornish Gigs. The Harbor Fest continues Sunday morning with the Annual Cardboard Boat Challenge featuring races in several categories with prizes for each winner. This has become a most popular highlight of our Harbor Fest – perhaps because some of these boats sink – and the designs show that creativity has

no limits. Waldo County’s Habitat for Humanity tops off the weekend hosting their annual fundraising Lobster Gala on Sunday at noon, featuring your choice of lobster, steak, burgers and hot dogs plus music provided by Maine’s award winning Blues Band, The Juke Rockets. Belfast Rotary, now in its 91st year, presents the Belfast Harbor Fest. The club of approximately seventy members, provides $70,000 in scholarships annually for Belfast, Searsport, Mt. View and Waldo County Tech, graduates. The club also helps support Belfast’s Soup Kitchen and local Food Pantries. Each year at Christmas, Rotary’s 100 Fund (now up to 130 children), distributes clothing, and gifts to over forty of our less fortunate Waldo County families. The Belfast Harbor Fest, now in its 8th year, is the club’s commitment to celebrate Belfast’s Maritime tradition and at the same time raise money to assist in our charitable giving. Come spend three days on the Belfast Waterfront and celebrate the best of Coastal Maine Summer.

THE PASSY RAIL TRAIL, JUST OPENED IN 2016, Starting at the end of Front street near the footbridge in Belfast, the city has converted a rail line to a nice walking and biking path that borders the Passagassawakeag river. It is 2.3 miles one way, with a very slight grade upward, and ends at City Point near the Belfast and Moosehead Lake railroad station. The path is mostly shaded, going through hemlock groves, over a trestle bridge, and ending near the railroad station parking lot. Hikers can continue across Oakhill road, where the Sea Trail continues on for another 4+ miles.—from TripAdvisor

Off the path

Too often when we explore a place, our attention veers toward main street, to the hub of activity. But around Belfast there are many rewards in going off the beaten path. Quiet and gorgeous destinations await. From north to south, from the west back to city center, we've uncovered some nifty spots that have something to offer everyone: boat- and-farm-to-table food, little-known cultural hotspots, and some truly magnificent outdoor scenery.

DOWNTOWN BELFAST

CENTER What you’ll certainly notice about downtown Belfast is the lack of the ubiquitous t-shirt shop vibe. Here, in the center of town, you’ll find a boutique atmosphere with creative and friendly shops that compliment each other, plus a great selection of eateries for fresh meals and treats. For an on-the-go lunch, try Bay Wrap for their flavorful wraps like the A’yuh… it’s bah BQ, or the Oh My COD! They have a seating area too. For table service, there's Dockside Family Restaurant, not flashy, but a true Maine experience with fresh-caught seafood, outdoor seating and affordable prices. For a brew or burger, there’s Rollie's Bar & Grill across the street, a bustling vintage bar and local watering hole which was selected as a location for Stephen King’s movie “Thinner.” More great seafood can be found at Harborwalk Restaurant located one block from the waterfront. They serve lunch and dinner all week and breakfast on the weekend. Local haunt Darby’s is a classic pub, with real linen napkins and a surprisingly 10

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

diverse menu. Try their Pad Thai, fresh crab melt and Big Buddha Bowl. Nautilus Seafood & Grill probably has the best waterside views, and their steaks, seafood and kicked-up comfort food pair nicely with a local brew. And if you catch it at the right time, Belfast Co-op, the go-to for farm-raised organic food in the area, has monthly wine tastings usually coupled with a mini artist reception. For the reader, Belfast has four independent bookshops known for their quality and charm. Left Bank Books, which has been called "an amazing quiet oasis and a feast for the eyes," sits comfortably on the street level of the old opera house. They offer the classics, best-sellers, and awardwining titles. Well-mannered dogs are welcomed too. (Look for the water bowl out front!) Right next door, you'll find a fully stocked, throw-back of a video store, Opera House Video, a rarity in the digital streaming age. The owners can find anything you’re looking for. Old Professors Bookshop and Bellabooks are two more stops, featuring, the new, used, unusual, and even rare books.

Nautical Scribe Books features used, new, and discount maritime themed books. A few doors up from the post office is Moonbat City Baking Company, a bright gem. Some say their ham and cheese croissants rival those found in Paris. While you’re on that block, dive into the past at Ambiance, where you can browse for highly decorative (and unique) antique items and found art, plus a cool selection of lampshades. If it's culture you're seeking, Waterfall Arts, an eclectic community arts center, always has something going on, from thought-provoking installations and traditional art classes to funky dance parties. Need to wire up? The Hutchinson Center, an outreach center of the University of Maine just slightly west on the outskirts of Belfast, has a Mac and PC computer lab visitors can use. Or sign up for a computer at the terrific Belfast Free Library right in town. Both places have a constantly revolving array of cool local art in their lobbies. Here’s a final tip not everyone knows: the Belfast Dance Studio has a sauna, open to the public. For extremely reasonable rates, you can get warm to the core.

NORTHPORT &

SOUTH LINCOLNVILLE BEACH

Just 12 miles south of Belfast, in the Northport/Lincolnville area, you will find plenty of things to see, do and eat. Rent a bike before you leave town at Sidecountry Sports on High Street and bring one, or a few along. There are sweet roads to ride on out of town. Okay, who wants a lobster roll? Let's start with the under-the-radar Margaret’s, a lobster shack located right next to the community convenience store Wentworth Family Grocery on Route 1 in Northport. Consistently touted as an excellent source for a piled-high lobster roll (which costs well below what other places charge), the shack’s friendly owners will often come right out to the picnic tables to shoot the breeze with their customers. If traveling with a dog, a nice place to take a breather or pick up a pet treat is the meadowy grounds of Little River Veterinary Hospital off Route 1. A small oasis for stretching four legs. All summer long and into the fall, the views and food at Point Lookout are pretty much unbeatable. This Midcoast mountain retreat turned an under-used

baseball field nestled in the wooded acres of Ducktrap Mountain into a four-season, MOFGA-certified (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) organic farm for the public to enjoy, complete with friendly farm animals! Stop at one of their Open House Days to buy just-picked produce or make a reservation for their popular mountain-side Farm-to-Table dinners. If it’s fuzzy you like, stop at the Maine Alpaca Experience for luxury alpaca yarn, apparel and more, sourced from the alpacas at Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm in Unity. Feeling adventurous? Take the ferry at Lincolnville Beach to the island of Islesboro (a 30-minute trip) for a day of cycling. You can bring the car, bikes, or just hoof it over there. Or stick around the beach and wade in the shallows—Lincolnville has sand! If you've had enough sun, two places on the beach will show you why Maine provides endless material for artists and writers. Beyond The Sea Books and Gifts boasts an amazing collection of Maine authors and local artists that make up the thriving creative economy. Next

door, the Maine Artisans Co-operative Art Gallery offers the high-quality juried work from local artisans. Just west of Lincolnville Beach are the vast rolling fields of Cellardoor Winery. Enjoy a complimentary wine tasting and if you want to really be wowed, don't miss their annual culinary Smackdown, an over-the-top afternoon of food and wine pairings. On the same road as the winery sits the classic Youngtown Inn, where you can enjoy a crabapple Bellini in their cozy bar made from the crabapple trees lining the inn's property. Bay Leaf Cottage and Bistro, back on Route 1 in Lincolnville, offers group lobster dinners (not having to clean up is a bonus!) as well as seafood cooking classes using locally caught fish and shellfish. Stop at Dot's Market, for their slowmade gourmet take out dinners when you just don't feel like cooking. When the day is done, Merrybell Motel, reviewed as “a sweet little roadside motel located in a quiet, wooded country stretch” on TripAdvisor, will welcome you for a comfy overnight.

FINCH GALLERY Oils by local artist Jerri Finch

Tucked behind the iconic Consumers Fuel Company at the foot of Main Street and close to the bustling harbor and Penobscot Bay sits the Finch Gallery—a small gem embedded in the working waterfront. For decades painter Jerri Finch earned her stripes creating large, airbrushed acrylics for corporations, institutions and private collections across the country. But step inside the Gallery and it is quickly apparent Finch’s incarnation into the world of oils is centered on a sense of place. In this case Finch’s take on Belfast: the place she has called home for 35 years. And while Finch explores the delicate intricacies of summer gardens, the eeriness of a fog-drenched waterfront 14

or the solitude of an empty room: she is not interested in sentimentality. Her work is bold, graphic and arresting. Images leap from the canvas drenched in color and assertive brushstrokes. Finch delights equally in capturing the subtle moment before dusk blankets a thicket of trees or the blast of brightness coating a dinghy’s hull as the sun breaks through a cloud cover. Though Finch’s work is held in private collections and public buildings across the country including the Maine PUC, the State of Vermont, AIG in Hamilton Bermuda and the University of Maine, it is the personal connection made when meeting her collectors in the Gallery that she deeply enjoys. Last summer she shipped work north, south, east and west as well as witnessing her paintings find homes within minutes of the Gallery.

The Gallery, like Finch’s work, is seasonal. Once autumn frosts arrive, Finch retreats to her studio. By winter’s stride, she is in full creative force. When the ground thaws, Finch moves into her woodshop to construct frames for her paintings. By the time warm winds play on the Bay, The Finch Gallery—banners flying —opens it’s doors to summer and another season of welcoming new and old friends to a dynamic selection of signature oils, original greeting card posters and archival prints.

FINCH GALLERY Open 7 days a week 11am -5pm Thursday and Friday until 7pm June 23—mid-September Also open by appointment jerri@jerrifinch.com 207-338-1060

EAST SIDE, STOCKTON SPRINGS & SEARSPORT

NORTH

Historic site buffs will want to point their compass north to Prospect and the mysterious Fort Knox, 17 miles north of Belfast. Built out of granite as a military fortress in the mid-19th century, it's now known for its dark, spooky passageways, making it the site of "one of the best Halloween experiences in Maine." Connected to the Fort is the Penobscot Narrows Observatory—the highest bridge observatory in the U.S. Take the one-minute ride in the elevator to the top of the tower and you'll be rewarded with an unbelievable view of the Penobscot River Valley. South down Route 1 in Searsport is a blink-and-you'll miss-it sign to Sears Island, the largest undeveloped, uninhabited, causeway-accessible island on the east coast. Hike through the nature preserve's trails passed stone house ruins, wetlands, rugged cliffs and rocky beaches where rum-runners once used to drop off and hide smuggled liquor during Prohibition times.

16

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

Nearby, check out the Searsport Pines Golf Club, a public club where you can play nine holes in stunning scenery or sign up for their Sunday morning two-person scramble for a friendly competition. Winner buys brunch! A great indoor spot to visit on a rainy day in Searsport Village is the Penobscot Marine Museum, Maine's oldest maritime museum. Learn what sea captains in the mid-1800s brought back as gifts from the Orient and study other collections of maritime artifacts. The Village also has some neat curiosity shops, so take a stroll. You can take a heritage walking tour with The Museum in the Streets trail— follow signs along the streets to visit 17 historic places right in town! Heading back to Belfast, just slightly inland, is The Marsh River Co-op in Brooks, the best place to find fresh vegetables and local meats, along with original jewelry, wood crafts, fiber and fabric arts handcrafted items by

local artisans. "Maine's most scenic" Country View Golf Club is also in Brooks. It's worth a stop for its stunning views with 3,000 yards of forested course and reasonable green fees. Work up an appetite and hit the coast just north of Belfast before heading back over the bridge for a stop at treasured Young’s Lobster Pound on the harbor. A classic Maine shore dinner experience, it’s perfect for families and it’s BYOB! Picnic style with everything locally caught and prepared right there. Want to take home a little bit of Maine? The Lupine Cottage, a cool artists Coop features more than 65 artisans. Handmade high-quality gifts, galore! (Located just up the road, north of Young’s.) Or pick up some summer bounty each Friday at the Belfast Farmer's Market. UNITY, THORNDIKE,

WE S T FREEDOM & LIBERTY

Taking the unhurried back roads in fall/summer is one of the best ways to travel in Maine. Heading west on Route 3 out of Belfast—with turns on rural routes both north and south—you’ll find farmland expanses, livestock, rolling ridges and lots of roadside stands with home-grown or homemade treats and crafts. You can get your fix of unique quilts, unfinished furniture, baskets, doll clothes and jewelry, plus jams, jellies and maple syrup at Patchwork Plus in Searsmont, about 15 minutes due west of Belfast on Route 3. About 15 more minutes down the road is a pride of Waldo County, pristine Lake St. George in Liberty. About a mile past its State Park entrance you’ll hit Lori's Cafe on your left, located in a gas station plaza, a family-owned country restaurant known for their all-day breakfast. Locals say the dump truck breakfast is a musttry, especially with homemade bread. Head up Marshall Shore Road just before the cafe (turns into Stickney Hill Road), and go left at the top onto 220

North for a brew with a view at the tiny tasting room of Liberty Craft Brewing. Their Chupacabra Pale Ale goes down well as you admire the mountain ridges in front of you. And while you're doing a mini version of the Maine Beer Trail, make sure you check out the brand new family-friendly Thresher Brewing Co. in Searsmont as well. On the way, take a quick detour through Liberty Village, Route 173 where it hits Route 220. A hillside main street with just the basics—library and post office—the village of Liberty is known worldwide for a quirky old tool shop and a natural dye t-shirt design and printing company and outlet shop, Liberty Graphics, which offers a welcoming front porch and 50-cent cups of coffee. North of Liberty is Raven's Berry Farm in Freedom, a great place for some late summer picking of fresh wholesome locally grown raspberries and strawberries (but be aware their policy only allows families with small children to pick after 11 a.m.). The town

of Unity is home to Unity College, a small environmental school as well as a thriving Amish community. There’s the Amish Bakery and Community Market on Thorndike Road which sells the best breads, pies and treats you may ever eat. All natural. All by hand. Take in classic views of timeless rural living out this way. As you wind back toward Belfast, perhaps through Waldo, slow down for Weaver's Roadside Variety on Route 137, a classic Maine general store which Yelp reviewers call "the best kept secret in Belfast" for their donuts made fromscratch and gluten-free baked goods. For the kids, on the way back to Belfast via Route 3, stop at Seahorse Stables, a new, state-of-the-art, kid-friendly equestrian facility that offers horse shows open to the public as well as week-long camp for tweens. Before the stables in Belmont is family-owned Bahner Farm organic vegetable stand. Simply beautiful produce!

WINDSOR

CHAIRMAKERS American furniture. Handmade in Maine.

Located just six miles north of Camden on U.S. Route 1, Windsor Chairmakers has been a must-see destination for more than a quarter of a century. They have created the quintessential Yankee workshop on a historic 5 acre homestead.

The original old barn now serves as the workshop where you are invited to wander through and see one-of-akind pieces of furniture being made. While Windsor Chairmakers is famous for the craftsmanship and comfort of their Windsor chairs, you will also see the crew at work hand-crafting custom dining tables, beds, buffets, desks, chests, stools and other custom pieces. This gives you an opportunity to experience, first hand, the quality of construction and finishes found in all Windsor Chairmakers furniture.

The circa 1800 farmhouses welcomes visitors to explore over 15 rooms, all designed to showcase the traditional American furniture designed by founder, Jim Brown, and made on site. Each room displays furniture made in Tiger Maple, Cherry, Curly Birch and Walnut, an experience designed to inspire you when you choose your own custom furniture. The Shaker Gallery displays the furniture designed by Brown and based on authentic Shaker styles. The friendly and knowledgeable crew at Windsor Chairmakers invite you to

come and explore this special place. You can choose to purchase the perfect piece from the showroom, have a custom piece designed for you or just come by for a visit. You’ll find this business reflects the Brown’s philosophy about making furniture here in Maine: “Things are best kept simple.”

MEET THE

MUSICIANS THE MUSICAL SIDE OF BELFAST

MIDCOAST MAINE is a musical crossroads: we borrow Acadian traditions from Canada and Down East, combine them with American country, blues and folk heritages native to rural communities, and even blend them with the latest urban sounds. The result is a diverse music scene sure to please, and even surprise, any listener.

LEAKY BOOT JUG BAND AMERICANA The Leaky Boot Jug Band grew out of an open jam at Neal Parent’s Belfast photography gallery and makes rollicking, rootsy, heartfelt Americana in the vein of the Grateful Dead and Gillian Welch. Performing with a host of instruments including cowbell, washboard and harmonica, the band prefers local, outdoor venues, under the moon and by the sea, where both band and audience can go where the musical spirit moves them. The main goal of the group has always been enjoying good company. As vocalist Annadeene Fowler says, “there’s an amazing connection that happens with my band-mates when we get into a particularly driving groove.” “We like to howl,” says guitarist Russ Lloyd with a smile.

ADONIS RISING ROCK Adonis Rising is a five-piece group from Lincolnville that turns it up to volume eleven. They cite 90s alternative as their key influence: lead singer Paul Anthony Yeaton’s vocals bring to mind the psychedelic sound of the Stone Temple Pilots. But their appeal is wide.

“My girlfriend’s kindergartners got one of the first CDs we made. They listened to it every day in the car on the way to school,” says Yeaton. “We also have fans in Sweden and Denmark, and have sold more copies of our albums there than anywhere. One of our biggest fans is in the military, stationed in Stockholm, has bought every single thing of ours he could get his hands on.” Their devoted fans clearly love Adonis Rising’s commitment to their genre. “We just want to be good at playing rock,” say Yeaton. “Groups like the Foo Fighters don’t claim to be anything more than they are: just a straight down the middle rock n’ roll band.”

C O N C E P TA INSPIRATIONAL Born and raised in South Africa, entrepreneur and vocalist Concepta’s music is rooted in her Christian faith. While she has performed at church events and coffee houses in the region and recorded many beloved Christmas songs, her primary goal is to reach others through the uplifting messages in her lyrics. “I’m a singer, but my other work—as a life coach, speaker and manager of an online clothing boutique—all connect to a bigger picture, which is empowering and inspiring young women to love and respect themselves,” she says. She plans to keep recording and releasing more original material, always with the goal of offering better options for girls.

Whether you’re visiting town for a summer festival or seeking out a cabin fever reliever in the middle of a snowy winter, get out and see and support our local bands. WE HAVE HEART, WE HAVE SOUL, we have character, volume and vibe.

Even this far north, you can get down to Delta and Chicago blues with the Juke Rockets, a “high octane” band with a decade-long history and a dedication to giving back to the community via benefit shows. “There are so many people in our area who don’t have their own homes, enough to eat, health care—things that we in the band enjoy. If we can use our talents to help raise money to make a difference for someone in need, it’s our responsibility to do so,” says Steve Mellor, a founder of the group and its bassist. Founded as a garage blues band in Morrill, the group plays parties all over the state. “We love when our audiences dance with reckless abandon,” says Mellor. “It means that we’ve helped them forget their jobs and their weekly routine. For this song, they are just enjoying the moment.”

Artisan Lighting & Objects for Dwelling

Belfast Bay Shade Co. is a true Belfast original. Started in 2013 by husband and wife team of artist and electrician, Dina Petrillo and Ryan Herz, the company has roots in a long dynamic dance of creative impulse and practicality. Perched at the top of city center is Belfast’s historic post office and the home of Belfast Bay Shade Co. More than a decade ago the building’s second floor was transformed into a mixed-media teaching studio for work in silver, plaster, clay, metals, glass and encaustic… and the Post Office Studio Workshop was conceived. Envisioned as a space that would nourish collaborations among thinkers and makers, it yielded novel and enduring partnerships. As a materials laboratory, experimentation with a wild array of materials—ranging from the organic and home grown to the mechanical and industrial—collided with traditional printmaking techniques on 34

etching presses...this produced some surprising results…and so BBSC was born. Ascending the post office stairs, you will find yourself in a magical world of glowing color, pattern and shape – fine art prints and brilliant fabrics infuse everything from light sculptures to table linens, shoji room screens to floor clothes and pillows—portable lamps and built-in fixtures—lighting design for ceiling, window, wall and floor and a multitude of lampshades!!! “Dina’s aesthetic seems emancipated from stylistic norms”, says Larraine Brown. “Her curious fusion of human, plant and machine traverses cultures and timebound traditions with ease. Belfast Bay has produced an eclectic pastiche of design, object and application that is singular.” Petrillo says, “The journey will always be about collaboration and making new ideas, and I do mean ‘ideas’, objects are

just the vehicle...an essential vehicle albeit...I am thoroughly committed to ‘things’ being useful, ‘illuminating’—metaphorically and physically. What we interact with on a daily basis should have as much life in it as we can muster.” With beauty and utility at a premium, Belfast Bay started offering on-site design consults and electrical installations in 2015. Customers are at the heart of Belfast Bay, “The folks who are going to bring these objects into their homes and workplaces give us invaluable feedback, everyday we are compelled to make new designs... and this is wondrous!” BELFAST BAY SHADE CO. Gallery Director, VoxPhotographs Art gallery owner Heather Frederick and her husband Linden moved to the Belfast area in 1989 from Connecticut in search of a place that had the makings for a high quality of life. "Once we saw the midcoast of Maine, the choice was easy," Heather said. With minds made up, the couple, purchased 10 acres of land in Northport and built a carefully planned house and studio before relocating to Belfast in 2004. When asked how she would sum up Belfast in a single word, Heather offered several: "Peaceful, safe,” and continued on to say, “The quiet, gracious residential streets are what I think of coming home to. That said, that gorgeous harbor is where they all lead!"

DA N MILLER

Founder, Belmont Boatworks “Living and working on boats, we had been up and down the east coast several times. We landed in Liberty first. When we started shopping for a house, we were burning grooves in Route 3 getting home four or fives times a day. We were attracted to Belfast because of its working waterfront, sense of community, and the kid's school. We stay here because the community is great, our kids have strong roots here, and it's our home in every romantic sense of the word. The creative community in the Belfast area is a huge part of the equation too. I love how it is everywhere. Music and art are on the surface and at the core of almost everything here.”

S U ZE TTE M CAVOY

Executive Director, Chief Curator Center for Maine Contemporary Art No stranger to the Maine arts scene, Suzette McAvoy is what you might call a pivotal force in advancing contemporary art in Maine. Suzette and her husband settled in Belfast as a matter of convenience as their jobs are in opposite directions. “We needed a place that could meet all of our needs and cut down on our commute time.” The choice turned out well. It was not long before the couple fell under the charm of Belfast and, as Suzette explained, "Belfast became our home. When we travel we miss it." What is the first thing she does when she returns from a trip? "I like to sit in my garden where I can relax," she said, adding that she also loves and appreciates "how much this community embraces and encourages the arts; that is a wonderful thing!"

L I ND E N F RE DERI CK Realist painter

Well known for his masterful paintings of scenes of small-town America and everyday places, artist Linden Frederick said Belfast inspired his creativity. "I like Belfast for the mix of people who were either born here or moved here. They have influenced each other in the right ways. I also like the concentration of the Arts and creative people." Frederick's paintings often depict quiet scenes that would be familiar to anyone in Belfast, such as a local eatery at night or a farm house with a long dirt road. So it was fitting when asked what he thought was Belfast's best-kept secret Linden responded, "The walk from the boathouse to the end of the foot bridge." TOP LEFT PHOTO: FULL MOON, BARBARA WEST

From a thick doughy meat lover's "loaded" to a minimalist gluten-free vegetarian thin crust, Waldo county has a distinct and delicious pizza for you! BY KAY STEPHENS

MEAT meat and more meat When looking for a “loaded meatza,” here’s one everyone can pig out on. Topped with mild pepperoni, spicy pepperoni, applewood smoked bacon, andouille smoked sausage, and canadian bacon, the everything but the oink pizza at Pizza Permare satisfies any carnivore. The applewood bacon, sausage and canadian bacon are all from local butchers and the dough is homemade. The red sauce, a family recipe, is slowly simmered with san marzano tomatoes, grown in Italy, which augments a highly intense tomato flavor, slightly sweet to counterbalance the salt. Topped with a mozzarella blend of hand-shredded cow’s and buffalo’s milk, the pie gets popped in the wood-fired brick oven while you wait in the rustic, uncontrived seating nook or enjoy a beverage on the deck. Pizza Permare, Northport 681 Atlantic highway 207-338-2600

BACON, scallion, pesto sauce As Waldo county’s premier source for green, eco-friendly food and provisions, you’d expect nothing less than the entire organic experience with Belfast Co-op’s bacon scallion pizza. Baked with house-made organic dough of white, wheat and a cornmeal mix, the co-op uses all-natural pork bacon cured simply with sugar and salt from part ‘n parcel farm in Dixmont, a Maine family farm. The sauce is pesto not red. The cheese is a mozzarella and provolone blend. This pie has a tiny bit of a bite, balanced with a savory, salted richness. And unlike everywhere else, you can get it by the slice! Sit outside or enjoy it in the humming little cafe surrounded by local art. Belfast Co-op 123 High street 207-338-2532

You’re not going to have to forage far and wide to find this chef’s favorite, which also happens to be vegetarian. Unlike most pizzas, the wilderness at Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House is chargrilled with a Boston-sourced dough, topped with house-made marinara that simmers for at least eight hours, portabella and white button mushrooms and irish—not italian—parmesan for a delicious twist. Full earthy flavors emerge when the pizza is grilled to order. Consistently warm and friendly servers, exposed brick walls and cozy booths add to this chill, classy interior in the heart of downtown Belfast. hold the cheese

A cheese-less pizza? In Italy, it’s called a frutti di mare and true to form, this seafood pizza is brimming with mussels, scallops, and lobster all caught by area fishermen and lobstermen. At meanwhile in Belfast it’s called the harbormaster. As one of 500 neopolitan certified pizza makers in the world, Meanwhile’s italian-born and raised owners offer the most authentic neapolitan pizza in Waldo County. The harbormaster’s delicate flavors are enhanced with arugula and cherry tomatoes from mofga-certified farms. The extra virgin olive oil and lemon complement the long-rise dough made with italian flour, water, sea salt and house-made sourdough starter. Visually, this one’s a stunner and one of their most popular pies. Meanwhile in Belfast 2 Cross street 207-218-1288

POTATO

rosemary + garlic confit

Potato and rosemary might not make sense on a pizza to an American, but in Tuscany, it’s very typical and very delicious. Dolce Vita Farm’s recipe calls for garlic confit, which is slowly warmed up olive oil and loads of garlic spread onto fermented dough, then shaped into a thin crust. Layered with thin slices of organic yellow potato, topped with mozzarella and sprinkled with rosemary, this savory pizza comes right out of Dolce Vita Farm’s wood-fired oven, affectionately known as “arabella.” Sit outside this tiny, tucked away spot in rural Lincolnville and enjoy the pizza right next to the garden where most of the ingredients come from in the summer months. “We are thankful every day to be part of this community. We are delighted to have you visit us and we will take care of you in any way we can” — ANTHONY & TINA

Some say that great ideas start on a napkin in a bar. In Delvino’s Grill & Pasta Houses case, it is true... THE STORY: The story begins in 2005 for the owners of Delvino’s, Anthony Jacovino & Tina DelSanto. Anthony went to The Lookout Pub (recently renamed The Front Street Pub) to visit his friend Katherine Loblein. The visit yielded an introduction to Katherine’s business partner, Tina DelSanto. As it turns out, Anthony and Tina were both looking for apartments… you guessed it! Tina and Anthony became apartment mates and friends and fell in love. Then comes the restaurant.

Fast-forward a few years to The Lookout, again, where Tina meets Bruce Thomas, another bona fide Belfast Lover. It’s 2010, and Belfast is once again going through a transformation. Bruce had recently bought a building that he knew the couple was dying to put a restaurant in. Over many months of working with Bruce, Tina and Anthony opened Delvino’s Grill & Pasta House in June of 2010.

relaxing, upscale location with creative food, located in the historical downtown within walking distance from the harbor. The restaurant is in a circa 1865 brick building. Delvino’s takes advantage of everything the community has to offer: lobster and mussels harvested from our harbor, as well as produce, meats and cheeses sourced locally which add flare to an eclectic Italian menu.

THE FOOD: Delvino’s: Stepping through the doors you might think you are in New York or Boston but you’re actually in Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House in beautiful downtown Belfast. Delvino’s is the perfect date night, family gathering,
