2016 BELFAST THE BAY & BEYOND VISITOR’S GUIDE It is hard for me to believe a year has passed already. Beginning my second year as Executive Director for the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce, I have so many good things to report, the first of which is that Belfast continues to be a growing summer travel destination. Last summer, we welcomed more than 10,000 visitors to our newly remodeled Visitor Center located on lower Main Street. Visitors came from Canada, Europe, and all over the U.S. with lots of questions and much excitement about being in Midcoast Maine. Waldo County continues to grow in popularity as a place to explore and adore. Chamber membership is growing too. As always, I thank our members, our volunteers, and our Board of Directors for making the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce such a vibrant and healthy community-based organization

In addition to a fresh new look, the 2016 magazine features stories that highlight the diversity of people, places and things going on all over Waldo County. Our region is rich in color, creativity and culture. We welcome visitors and county residents alike to enjoy the expanded Belfast The Bay & Beyond magazine 2016. We look forward to seeing or hearing from you soon. Please stop by to say hello!

You will see the magazine has grown as well. This year we are launching a new design with more pages, plus a new mini guide-within-the guide section— Belfast 360°. Belfast 360° explores all directions of Waldo Country, emanating out from Belfast city center as far south as Lincolnville and as far north as the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, a 2,120foot cable-stayed bridge that spans the Penobscot River along Route 1 from Prospect to the tiny Verona Island leading to neighboring Bucksport (see page 36).

CAR LOVERS UNITE!

Who knows how it started or who started it, but we’re glad they did. Friday nights in summer, classic car lovers rally in the parking lot of Reny’s Plaza to

show off their wheels. Music. Wasse’s hot dogs. And probably a sexy chassis or two. Show up around 5 PM and join the party!

THE BELFAST AREA HAS SO MANY DELIGHTS YOU MIGHT FIND IT HARD TO CHOOSE: A harbor sunrise over the sailboats, lobsters served straight from the sea, rolling country hills dotted with roadside farm stands. But there are hidden gems, too. Don’t miss the out-of-the-way spots loved by locals. We are happy to share where to find the best swimming holes, the most affordable antiques and the yummiest ice cream stands.

DOWNTOWN BELFAST

CENTER In season, there can be a wait at favorite eateries like Chase’s Daily, Darby’s, and Young’s Lobster Pound over the bridge. For a quieter meal, down the hill, behind Brambles garden shop, to the new Meanwhile in Belfast, where the authentic Neapolitan cuisine includes wood-fired specialties like mussels in white wine and pizzas with figs, prosciutto and goat cheese. Or grab a pork enchilada and a seasonal margarita at La Vida, a cheery little spot just off the major intersection in town. On the last bit of slope just above the town landing is Rollies, a fixture for beer, burgers, and sports on multiple screens. Main Street is chock-full of wonderful shopping—including excellent recent additions like the beautifully curated women’s consignment shop Justine and men’s boutique Man on Main. Fun stops on Main Street include the purveyor of specialty olive oils (extra virgin, fused, infused, gourmet and organic) Vinolio, and, because this is Maine—where fix-it-yourself is often required—peek in

10

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

the Home Supply Center for a classic small-town hardware store experience. I often browse the small kitchen utensil pegboard for kicks. But there’s retail you may have missed if you don’t venture off the beaten path. For example, don’t pass by the side door of Aina Moja on Main St., where your purchase of fair trade jewelry and baskets from Africa support a non-profit. Go up the stairs above Alexia’s Pizza to view Susan A. Cooney Fine Art Studio’s exquisite miniature graphite landscape drawings. Drop by Belfast Bay Shade Company’s open studio above the post office, where Dina Petrillo fashions handcrafted lampshades and fabrics. Follow the bright windows into Fiddlehead Artisan Supply to find inspiration for a rainy day craft project. Speaking of rainy days, nothing’s better than a first-run feature at the historic Colonial Theater. The deco movie palace and its roof-top elephant are landmarks. Take in a show from the

balcony—complete with popcorn, candy and beer, of course! Or you could relax in a sauna at the Belfast Dance Studio. For the days when the weather is more amenable, join the crew of Maine Daysail on the vintage Schooner Timberwind for cruises, sails and charters out of Belfast’s harbor. Starting at the Belfast Boathouse on Steamboat Landing and crossing the town landing, is the Belfast Harbor Walk, 9/10 of a mile stretch that winds along the downtown coast and crosses Penobscot Bay via Armistice footbridge (The Footbridge). With so much going on, guests will need to stay awhile. There’s the Belfast Bay Inn boutique hotel, the impeccably renovated Yankee Clipper Motel, and a fun B&B program through Belfast’s Unitarian Universalist church. After you’ve covered town, plan to strike out for a few hours in another direction, and enjoy these recommendations gleaned from Mainers’ as perennial go-tos.

NORTHPORT &

SOUTH LINCOLNVILLE BEACH

The roads leading south from Belfast are spectacular: Route 52 winds its way past farms and lakes, and I never fail to gasp at the view of Ducktrap Harbor opposite Point Lookout resort as I drive down the Atlantic Highway. (By the way, Duck Trap River all-natural smoked salmon and fish products are named for this area. Make sure you sample some while you are here.) For wool lovers there’s Swan’s Island Blankets showroom; closer to the beach is wonderful Windsor Chairmakers. Over the past several years, these routes have expanded their offerings— but just slightly! Northport and Lincolnville are still delightfully low-key. In the summer, Mainers know to skip the popular stretch of Lincolnville Beach, and instead pick up an egg salad and locally smoked salmon sandwich and some whoopie pies at Dot’s and a fresh-roasted iced coffee from Green Tree Coffee & Tea and head over to the “locals’ side” on the south end, down by the ferry landing, for a relaxing picnic.

12

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

After a hard day of lying around in the sun, check out the new pub menu at the Lobster Pound, with beer from Andy’s Brew Pub. If grapes are more your speed than hops, stop by Cellardoor Winery’s barn for a tour and tasting. If you like the water a bit less frigid, take the back roads in to Pitcher Pond, an idyllic spot with a shady beach and clear, calm waters deep in the woods. Bring your kayak and provisions: my treat of the summer is the intense, not-too-sweet chocolate ginger cookies from the new Red Barn Baking Company, open on weekends. There’s also a bunch of good shopping haunts to hit. Make an appointment to visit Simon van der Ven’s rural studio to see his distinctive illuminated clay vessels and usable ceramics. Like most folks around here, van der Ven’s work is informed by community: he and other area artisans fire their pottery once a year in friend and fellow artist Jody Johnstone’s wood kiln in Swanville. Similarly world-class functional crafts

can be found at Sleepy Hollow Rag Rugs, where the studio shares barn space with the family pony in the winter. The O’Brien’s weave their rugs the way Mainers have always done it, from worn-out clothes from family and neighbors, on a cotton rug warp. Carol, the lovely owner of Kendrick’s Antiques, once lent me her own van to bring home the perfect oak dresser I’d just bought because it didn’t fit into my car. Nice. Lincolnville and Northport are full of lodging options for out-of-towners: historic Bayside Cottage Rentals, a colony of quaint 19th century homes clustered around Kelly’s Cove; charming suites and sumptuous breakfasts at the Victorian by the Sea; a stylishly refurbished room at the Mount Battie Motel; eco-friendly, immaculate and affordable; bay-front cottages or suites at Glenmoor by the Sea; swanky pool-side suites—with fireplaces and hot tub access—at the lux Inn at Ocean’s Edge. All of these are located right on or off Route 1, making travel up and down the coast easy as blueberry pie.

FINCH GALLERY Oils by local artist Jerri Finch

Tucked behind the iconic Consumers Fuel Company at the bottom of Main Street sits an unassuming wooden building. Were it not for the fresh barn red façade, pots of flowers and welcoming banners flowing in the breeze, it’s humble beginnings as a mechanic’s garage are plainly visible. However, last summer, long-time resident and painter Jerri Finch transformed the garage into the Finch Gallery, a small gem embedded in the working waterfront. Filled with the oils and prints of Finch’s intensely saturated and graphic imagery, the Gallery celebrates both the natural and inner world. Oceanscapes, gardens, 14

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

woods and intimate domestic interiors are imbued with Finch’s trademark connection to place: one that has evolved over the 34 years of making Belfast her home. Featured in DownEast Magazine, Fiber Arts, and American Craft Magazine, Finch’s work is held in private collections across the country and public buildings including the Maine PUC, the University of Maine, MBNA, the State of Vermont, and AIG in Hamilton, Bermuda. Like Finch’s work, the Gallery is seasonal. As the frosts begin in autumn, Finch retreats into her studio and by early winter is in full creative stride. When the ground thaws, and the plants begin to grow, she

finishes up her painting and moves into the woodshop, where she makes frames to complete her paintings. And once the warm wind plays on Penobscot Bay, the Finch Gallery, filled with paintings subtle and surprising, soothing or sensual, opens. Come explore the showcase of Finch’s original oils as well as her greeting cards, posters and archival prints on canvas. You’ll find the Finch Gallery a wonderful discovery. FINCH GALLERY Open June 24 - mid-September Thursday and Sunday, 1-5pm Friday and Saturday, 1-7pm Also open by appointment 207-322-7228, jerrifinch.com

Every year, thousands drive from the Belfast area up to the Blue Hill peninsula, Acadia National Park and points beyond. But go slowly—the antiquing is excellent. You can’t beat the Victorian and country furniture at Gaul’s Antiques, or the museum-quality kitchenware and quilts at the Pumpkin Patch. If you find a beautiful old bookcase at the supereclectic outdoor Hobby Horse Flea Market, stop by Penobscot Books to fill it. Their collection of out-of-print art books is second to none. Why not pick up some vintage teacups as well, and fill them with a blooming jasmine or white mango blend from the new Treasured Leaf Tea Company just over the "Passy" bridge? Tourists have been making summertime pilgrimages to Perry’s Nut House next door for homemade fudge and wacky souvenirs for generations, but my family loves to go before Christmas, for stockingstuffers. Then check off those you want to impress on your list at Bennett’s Gems

and Jewelry, packed with one-of-a-kind precious gemstones and fossils that can be transformed into custom-made jewelry. Three more shopping opportunities near Searsport: first is the nursery at the well-named Hidden Gardens, where a fawn once pranced alongside my car as I drove in. If you buy some basil, you can browse the incredible array of works by local artists at Mainely Pottery down the road to find just the right decorative pot in which they might grow. Nearby on the same side is Robin’s Nest Consignment, with great finds and prices. I was thrilled to learn that Melissa Terry and her black lab Hawser are back at sea with Stockton Harbor Cruises. She’s great at her job, and sails right into fall with foliage tours and a haunted cruise of Bucksport. Penobscot Marine Museum also has ways to get you into the water: a lobster boat tour on the traditional Clara K or a sail with Guildive

Cruises can be combined with your entry ticket. Back at the museum, kids have been known to make believe for hours in the Peapod living history space. Or take the family to the ALLPLaY recreation center, where candlepin bowling, pool tables and a small arcade can easily soak up an afternoon. If all this adventure is getting you hungry, folks swear by the classics—baskets of fried clams, chowders, broiled fish dinners—at Anglers in Searsport just before Stockton Springs. Or pick up an elegant boxed lunch and local wine at the Good Kettle in Stockton Springs. One meal I’ve been wanting to try is the Beach Lobster Bake at Searsport Shores Ocean Campground: pitch a tent in a wooded site and then join the crowd for mussels, corn on the cob, lobsters steamed in seawater and home-baked cobbler, served al fresco on the beach. Reserve in advance, because tickets for these magical meals sell out early.

“Like visiting Grandma’s house” is how many guests describe their stay at the Mount Battie Motel. The crisp, clean white bedspreads, white foot blankets, matching handmade and starched window curtains, dust ruffles, decorative pillow cases, and shower curtains take you back to youthful carefree days when the family drove to the country to visit Grandma. Her house was always clean and welcoming with pretty flowers, relaxing porch chairs, and home-baked aromas drifting from her kitchen. Although you may no longer be chasing butterflies, your hosts, Christine and Ed, will embrace you with the same warmth and hospitality. So take the scenic route along the coastline. Just three miles north of Camden, on coastal Route 1, stands the Mount Battie Motel overlooking Penobscot Bay. The Mount Battie Motel is AAA rated, WINNER—Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, Maine Innkeepers Association Member, BBB Accredited, and a Google Favorite. Take notice of the wraparound porch with its signature sunshades. Yes, that’s the porch you read about on Trip Advisor, where guest after guest describes eating the most incredible home-baked breakfast. Enter the front lobby and immediately you are engulfed in the home-baked aromas flowing from the kitchen. The entire lobby is a gallery of aviation art from the cathedral ceiling to the floor. Before Ed can say “Welcome to the Mount Battie Motel,” you ask, “Were you a pilot?” Veterans, history enthusiasts, and the curious share countless stories with Ed upon check-in. Christine helps you unwind from your long trip by offering a cup of specialty tea or gourmet coffee. After the unexpected B&B hospitality, you realize you’re tired and getting hungry, but you still want to do it all. You can, because the Mount Battie Motel is centrally located, just a short drive to Bar Harbor, minutes away from wine tasting, hiking, sightseeing, lobster boating, swimming, sailing, museums, shopping, and the best restaurants on the coast. Don’t miss the large firepit deck with rocking chairs, benches, and table games. Cuddle up with a book in a lounge chair on the breezy hilltop or next to the flowering gardens. Of course you can always relax on your private porch right outside your front door. So hop in the open-air “Battie Cart” and let Christine escort you to your room, which has been

meticulously cleaned with fresh-smelling, organic, tea tree oil and appointed with special amenities. Settle in, then return to the main house and Christine will personally help you plan your vacation. Review local menus and Ed will make your reservations. Show your room key to select local merchants and enjoy discounts and extra values offered only to Mount Battie Motel guests. Most of all, allow yourself to go back in time to memories of Grandma’s house and relax while being pampered at this clean, cozy, and comfortable vacation destination where B&B hospitality is combined with motel privacy. You can have it all at the Mount Battie Motel. For more information, see the ad on pg. 6 and 7 of this magazine, call 800-224-3870, or click www.mountbattie.com. FREEDOM & LIBERTY The roads fanning out west of Belfast are perhaps those least traveled by tourists, but heavily utilized—and beloved—by Waldo County residents. Come the autumn equinox, you’d be wise to pick up a healthy snack at Unity’s CrossTrax Deli to munch on while you join the amiable crowd waiting for entry to the Common Ground Fair: over sixty thousand people make the pilgrimage each year to this one-of-a-kind celebration of all things organic and local, and many Mainers plan their falls around it.

If, by chance, you neglected to pick up an axe, seed packets, birdhouses or an eco-minded t-shirt at the fair, you can always find these and other farm-life necessities at local businesses nearby. World-renowned Liberty Tool is home to a dizzying selection of antique hardware, tools and ephemera. The level of organization in this place of 1,001 nuts and bolts is astounding! Across the street is Liberty Graphics’ company store, selling Maine-printed, natural dye apparel (great t’s and totes!) and 50-cent cups of coffee. Searsmont’s Patchwork Plus offers a rustic array of quilts, wood furniture and other country treasures. Recent addition Garden Variety in Thorndike

provides a hip mix of baked goods, gifts, antiques and housewares. For good eating out this way, there’s down-home country cooking at Lori’s Café (fresh donuts!) or the Ridge Top Diner. The new Liberty Craft Brewing pub has bratwurst to go with your pilsner. But make reservations weeks—or sometimes months—ahead for the Lost Kitchen in Freedom, whose farm-to-table cuisine has garnered raves from national food critics. No matter what you do, though, save room for ice cream from John’s roadside stand: it’s not summer in the Midcoast without it. Truly.

Last but not least, waders and paddlers of all kinds need to know about Lake St. George in Liberty. Head 16 miles west of Belfast straight out Route 3 to Lake St. George State Park with its 1,017-acre gem of a lake at the center. Loons are frequent visitors to the lake, and their signature call can often be heard at night. Landlocked salmon and brook trout are there for the fishing. Canoes, kayaks and paddle boat rentals are available, as is the best lake swimming for those of you who like your water crystal clear.

" As a part of the largest

philanthropy in the world, Waldo

County Shriners work toward one single goal, contributing to the

nationwide network of Shriners Children’s Hospitals.” — CHARLIE PR AY, President, WaldoCounty Shrine Club

Anah and Kora Shriner's Visit Waldo County for a joint ceremonial Parade date June 18th

6/17/16 - 6/19/16

The Shrine Organization is best known for its colorful parades, the distinctive red hat (fez) and its national philanthropy designed to help children in need. The fraternity was the brainchild of Dr. Walter Fleming, who was from Portland ME, and actor Billy Florence from New York City, who wanted to set up a new fraternal order in which Masons could join together in fellowship and fun. The heart and soul of the Shrine is the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Our first Shriners Hospital in New England was opened in 1922 in Springfield MA. Then 46 years later in 1968 we opened a hospital for severe burns in Boston. Today there are 22 Shrine Hospitals in North America that provide treatment for pediatric orthopaedics, burn care, spinal cord injuries, Clift lip and palate and plastic and laser surgery. Since 1922 the Shriners have treated over 1,000,000 children at our 22 Shriners Hospitals. Anah Shriners of Bangor held its first meeting on July 1, 1921. Prior to the creation of Anah Shriners, Kora Shriners of Lewiston was the only Shriners temple in Maine. Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth with nearly 200 temples (chapters) in several countries and thousands of clubs around the world. It is the mission of Shriners International to: Be the premier fraternal organization for men of good character; Provide attractive, quality programs and services for its members, their families and their friends in a spirit of fun, fellowship and social camaraderie; Foster self-improvement through leadership, education, the perpetuation of moral values and community involvement; Serve mankind through the resources of its philanthropy.

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

There’s a sort of romanticism that can creep in when talking about things made by hand—particularly, as it turns out, when talking about things made by hand here in M A I N E.

HAND MADE

CLAY A RIELA K U H & MEG HA N F LY N N Lincolnville

The notion of the solitary craftsman, meditatively practicing his trade, maybe somewhere deep in the woods, is not wholly different from the romanticized ideal of Maine itself: a place where you can get away from it all, get back to the essentials, live a simpler life. The truth is, life as a maker—like life as a Mainer—is much more complicated than that. Today's craftspeople are onewoman businesses, teachers, and alpaca

GLASS DAV I D JACO B SO N Montville

goat farmers on the side. Working in all sorts of mediums, they're making pieces with a hyper-focus on DETAIL in places all over the state, from the cloistered to the communal. Maine has fostered HANDCRAFTED items since before the state was actually a state. And artisans and makers have flocked here, and flourished here, since before their work was considered a craft, since the time when handmade

WOOD RO N CO WAN Belfast

items were merely, well, things that one needed. Today, with good reason, Maine is synonymous with craftsmanship. The value that a "Made in Maine" stamp adds is real. Things that are made here, especially by hand, are presumed to be better, longer-lasting, made of stronger stuff. More useful? Maybe. More BEAUTIFUL, almost always.

MAKERS HAND-CRAFTED HERE

C L AY

ARIELA KUH & MEGHAN FLYNN Lincolnville, Maine At the space they share in Lincolnville— named the Lincolnville Boat Club Studios after the organization they rent from—Ariela Kuh and Meghan Flynn (who both, as of this writing, are under thirty) are two young new ceramicists joining the long tradition of potters in Maine. Their forms—hand built or thrown on the wheel—are simple and modern, and increasingly sought after by restaurants as renowned as Momofuko in New York City.

Flynn, a Midcoast native, studied at Haystack and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Kuh, a more recent transplant to the area, has a background in fine arts and a degree from Hampshire College, where she studied painting. But both say they are as influenced by food as they are by art—drawing inspiration and ideas for their functional wares from the bounty all around them.

“When I first began making things out of clay, IT FELT MAGICAL that they could slip into the fold of everyday life.” — ARIELA KUH

ART & CRAFT

“There’s this spirit of independence—of getting away so that you have time to create. But at the same time, you have this REALLY SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY, And the light…it’s amazing.” — DAVID JACOBSON

GLASS DAVID JACOBSON Montville

At David Jacobson’s studio in Montville, at least two massive glowing kilns run around the clock. Here, in the 200-yearold barn that now serves as his glassblowing studio, Jacobson creates his one of a kind pieces—including delicate blown vases with sheer washes of color, slumped plates, and multicolored cups that are somehow both vibrant and understated—and also gives one-off lessons to visitors or groups who want to try their hand at the craft.

WOOD: “Man Who Weeps” by Cowan, installed in Brooklyn, NY

WOOD

PHOTO: RON COWAN

RON COWAN Belfast, Maine

On Ron Cowan’s property—thirteen acres of rolling hills and farmland—the faces are everywhere. They’re carved into living trees by the driveway, grouped together in silent formation in what he calls “gatherings,” propped up, half-finished, against an old fence. They’re magical looking, and the place, with its alpaca goats and even twinklingeyed Ron himself, feels magical too. Cowan, a native of Newport, Maine, gets particularly twinkly when he remembers when he came back to

Maine after a long stint away. Looking for a place to settle with his young family, he drove into Belfast, over the hill, and down all the way to the shore. “That was it. I was home. And when I got to the quiet, I got to the art.” That was 1980. Today, Cowan’s faces are fixtures in that same harbor: his site-specific installation “Long Breath” has them carved into posts that sit in the water, so the faces are revealed, and then hidden, again and again, in the cycles of the tides.

“Maine allows you THE SPACE, and THE QUIETUDE. The lights aren’t flashing so bright here. The distractions are curtailed a bit more. And I can’t think of another place where I could look around and see these kinds of colors.” — RON COWAN

CULTURE

FANATICS WE LOVE BY SARAH COTTRELL

The character of a small community is determined by the kinds of people who inhabit it. Luckily for us, Belfast has some of the most delightfully charming and endlessly fascinating characters around. We want to introduce you to three groups of passionate folks who have some rather intriguing hobbies. These fanatics that we love have created a buzz about town that is so palpable that their mysterious identities, verve for their work, and ability to maintain their home-grown appeal is turning into local lore. COME BOATING!

Belfast would be nothing if not for the magnificent Atlantic lapping up against the beautiful rocky shoreline. And that is where you will find a remarkable group called, Come Boating! What started as an inclusive group of Belfast rowing enthusiasts who welcome all ages—as long as folks can hold an oar upright!—Come Boating! has turned into a “quintessential community-building group,” says long-time member, Amy Grant. Heavily dependent on membership and donations, Come Boating! offers an impressive array of community-oriented sailing and rowing opportunities fueled by volunteers who themselves train to coxswains, skipper community sailings and maintain the organization’s boats. Want to know what a Pilot Gig is? Come Boating! To learn more about Come Boating! check out their website at www.comeboating.com

AS LONG AS YOU CAN HOLD AN OAR UPRIGHT!

CLOAKED IN MYSTERY FIDDLEHEAD HUNTERS

What if I told you that there is a mysterious group of unnamed foragers who, cloaked in solitude and early morning hours, deliver the gorgeous and ephemeral fiddlehead—a Maine delicacy—to the carefully arranged produce section at The Co-Op in Belfast? Not even the staff knows who these elusive gastronomical fanatics are. Every year in early spring, different anonymous individuals arrive with fresh bundles of the soft green fern still tightly wound in its iconic form. The Belfast Co-Op, Assistant Produce Manager, Sophia Album wondered if perhaps the reason for the anonymity has to do with the unregulated nature of fiddle-head hunting. Whatever the case, we love the annual delicacy! And thank you to the dedicated fern fanatics who fresh-pick them for us. To get your hands on some delicious Maine fiddleheads, be ready to start eyeing up the produce section at The Belfast Co-Op, local farm stands, and farmers markets in early spring.

RENY’S CRUISE-IN

What says Americana more than the classic Hot Rod? Nothing, that’s what! During the warm months in Belfast, locals can spot a group of antique and vintage car fanatics meeting in the Reny’s Plaza parking lot where kids can eat Wasses hot dogs and watch their reflections dance off the mesmerizing shine of chrome fenders, candy-colored paint, and crystal-clear windows.

BELFAST CLASSIC CAR CRUISE-IN, Friday nights: Reny’s Plaza Weekly Cruise-In @ Routes 1 and 3, 4:30PM–dusk. (May–Oct).

Started in 2006, by friends Mark and Paul (their last names I could not pin down) as a way to show off their passion for collecting and restoring vintage and antique cars, the Reny’s Cruise-In has become a local favorite weekly event. Swing by on a Friday night to appreciate automobiles as rare as a 1923 Ford Bucket T or as jaw dropping and cool as a 1965 Ford Mustang. To catch up with the Reny’s Cruise-In stop by the Reny’s Plaza parking lot any warm and dry Friday after 4:00 pm. The group takes a break for winter but resumes in April or May depending on the weather. Limited information can be found at www.facebook.com/Renys-Cruise-In

From fragrant herbs to home-raised meat, people in Maine know how to make the best use of the foods that thrive in our northern, not-so-easy to predict, climate. A few local food experts tell us what they love to put in their pots and pans. Get inspired for cooking at home, or try to one of these fantastic places!

CITY CENTER

GARLIC LAAN XANG CAFÉ Belfast Dan and Salika Jones Owners and Chefs

We do use lemongrass, a foundation of Laotian and Thai cuisine, but we have to go with garlic as our favorite. We love the fresh taste, the flavor, the smell—and it’s good for you, too! It’s used in cuisines from around the world, but in Asian food, garlic is infused with other herbs, and often paired with fish sauce, which complements it. We grow enough of our own garlic on our 43-acre organic farm in Brooks to last us for about half the year, though our eventual goal is to supply ourselves year-round. We use it almost all of our dishes, including one of the most popular, Drunken Noodles. Our customers don’t shy away from garlic: they know what they’re getting into when they come into Laan Xang. Mostly they ask for more spice, not less!

WEST

SAUSAGE RALPH’S CAFÉ Brooks Frank Champa Owner and Chef

As a Southerner, I consider myself an expert on sausage gravy. When I decided to add it to the breakfast menu at Ralph’s some ten years ago, I searched for the perfect sausage, one with the right amount of fat and flavor. I found a farm in Jackson called Aqua Terra that made a delicious sausage without any fillers or additives. Unfortunately, they stopped producing pork products recently, so I went on a new search and found Rose and Wes of Farmetta Farm in Morrill. Farmetta makes sausage from happy, pasture-raised, grass-fed Hereford Durroc crosses, and it’s incredible. Part of our identity at Ralph’s is that we’re a local café that uses nearby farmers whenever we can to supply our greens, meats and potatoes. Maine is a fantastic place to run a restaurant, because you can resource high-quality ingredients from your neighbors.

NORTH

CRAB THE GOOD KETTLE Stockton Springs Gay Dion, Owner Robin Soper, Head Cook

We use only fresh crab in our signature crab pie, which is like a quiche but not as eggy. Each pie has a homemade crust and holds a pound of crabmeat, some swiss cheese, and secret ingredients we can’t disclose! It’s awesome cold or hot, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We make a gazillion pies, and sell them as lunch specials and whole; people come from miles around to get them. You can freeze them at home, but we never have to, because demand is so high. The Good Kettle is a specialty food shop that prides ourselves on comfort food the way it used to be made, and we support as many local businesses as possible. We use Maine Sea Salt, Swan’s Honey, Lucy’s Granola, Stone Fox ice cream. Crab is indigenous to the area, too, of course: ours comes from Woods Seafood in Bucksport, a reliable and fantastic vendor, and is picked locally and delivered daily.

SOUTH Working with the warm, spicy scent of fresh rosemary is a delight to the senses. The Maine climate allows us to grow it in our herb garden in the summer and bring it inside the inn for the winter, so we’re able to use homegrown rosemary year-round.

ROSEMARY YOUNGTOWN INN Lincolnville Manuel Mercier Co-owner and Chef

Rosemary is a Mediterranean herb that has been used for cooking and medicinal purposes for thousands of years and can be put in everything from appetizers and entrees to desserts and drinks. It has an assertive flavor that blends well with garlic to season lamb roasts, meat stews, and marinades, but it can also enliven lighter fish dishes, tomato sauces, and vegetables. This past year I’ve been making rack of lamb with rosemary for dinner and smoked salmon scrambled eggs on a fresh rosemary-garnished potato pancake for breakfast, and a crab apple Bellini with a sprig of rosemary has been a featured cocktail in our bar. FRONT STREET PUB

As you’re strolling Belfast’s Beautiful Harbor walk you’ll head right by The Front Street Pub

Going into its 11th year, the pub has become a Belfast staple. When they added outside dining in 2010 it became an even better place to enjoy the sun and sights of Belfast.

Throughout the years many changes have been made, time has flown by and from the pub many other businesses have started including Katwalk, La Vida, and Delvinos. If you happen to stop into the Front Street Pub, make sure to sample some of the local treats they have. FOOD: The Front Street Pub makes 99% of the items on their menu in house. Often times using locally sourced and staff grown foods. Maine items such as oysters and mussels right from our waters. Maine raised ground beef burgers. Maine made cheddar for the house “Mozzarella” sticks. Local eggs and even picking and stocking up on their own fiddleheads, which just so

happen to be delicious fried up with some ranch dipping sauce! When in Maine…EAT LOBSTER! The pub always has lobster rolls on the menu in the summer months. Enjoy one for lunch or dinner! BEER: The Front Street Pub has 17 drafts, most of which are local brews. LIQUOR: Maine made 22 vodka, Cold River Vodka and Backriver Cranberry Gin are among a few of their local choices. Katherine Loblein and Tina DelSanto owners and operators of The Front Street Pub grew from girls to women and realized not only what it meant to own their own businesses, but also what it

meant to be part of a community they love. Along with their partners Anthony Jacovino and John Gibbs they are actively involved in their local Chamber of Commerce, were able to organize the Celtic Festival Beer tent, donate to hospice, and the game loft, along with many other non-profit organizations. The Front Street Pub has seen Belfast transform over the past ten years. They look forward to the exciting changes that will undoubtedly happen in the next ten years. Front Street Pub will be there with the Belfast community as they continue to grow and evolve. THE FRONT STREET PUB 37 Front Street, Belfast, Maine 207-338-8900

LA VIDA

MEXICAN & CARIBBEAN

R E STA U R A N T

“We are thankful every day to be part of this community. We are delighted to have you visit us and we will take care of you in any way we can” — ANTHONY & TINA

Some say that great ideas start on a napkin in a bar. In Delvino’s Grill & Pasta Houses case, it is true...

Over many months of working with Bruce, Tina and Anthony opened Delvino’s Grill & Pasta House in June of 2010.

THE STORY: The story begins in 2005 for the owners of Delvino’s, Anthony Jacovino & Tina DelSanto. Anthony went to The Lookout Pub (recently renamed The Front Street Pub) to visit his friend Katherine Loblein. The visit yielded an introduction to Katherine’s business partner, Tina DelSanto. As it turns out, Anthony and Tina were both looking for apartments… you guessed it! Tina and Anthony became apartment mates and friends and fell in love. Then comes the restaurant.

In October 2011, Anthony & Tina opened their second restaurant, La Vida Mexican & Caribbean Restaurant. La Vida means “The Life” in Spanish, and that’s what they are aiming to live, The Life!

Fast-forward a few years to The Lookout, again, where Tina meets Bruce Thomas, another bona fide Belfast Lover. It’s 2010, and Belfast is once again going through a transformation. Bruce had recently bought a building that he knew the couple was dying to put a restaurant in.

THE FOOD: Delvino’s: Stepping through the doors you might think you are in New York or Boston but you’re actually in Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House in beautiful downtown Belfast. Delvino’s is the perfect date night, family gathering, relaxing, upscale location with creative food, located in the historical downtown within walking distance from the harbor. The restaurant is in a circa 1865 brick building. Delvino’s takes advantage of everything the community has to offer: lobster and mussels harvested from our harbor, as well as produce, meats and

cheeses sourced locally which add flare to an eclectic Italian menu. LA VIDA: Has local and imported foods with Mexican & Caribbean flare. The dining room, lounge and bar with real fruit cocktails and homemade foods provide an exceptionally nice and laid back atmosphere. Anthony and Tina transformed the space into a brightly colored spot with an enthusiastic and creative staff providing outstanding service. THE STORY OF

NAUTILUS GRILL

The Nautilus story began, as so many do, over a few beers after work. Ron, Roz and Jenifer all worked together for many years at another local restaurant where Ron ran the kitchen for 20 years and Jen and Roz had been waiting tables for a long time. Like a lot of people in this business, we dreamt of one day having a place of our own.

Our conversations quickly progressed from “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” to “How are we going to make this happen?” In Feb. 2012, we got our answer. Ron was driving up Route 1 one evening and saw a for lease sign on the building that would become Nautilus. Two days later, the three of us were planning our restaurant. A week after that, we quit our jobs and started working on Nautilus full time. Our goal was to create a comfortable, casual environment where people can relax and unwind and enjoy a great meal at the same time. Ron wrote a menu that features his signature style of cooking which is innovative while remaining accessible. We cook most everything from scratch, from our pasta sauces to our pie crusts, and you can tell. If you were to look around in our pantry, you 48

would find ingredients, not “product”. We use local produce wherever we can and much of our seafood, including lobster and mussels, come right out of the bay outside our windows. We also carry a wide selection of local beers, wines and liquors at the bar. It’s very important to all of us to serve the best food and drinks, made with the freshest ingredients, that we know how. We don’t think food has to be fancy to be great. In the dining room, outside on the patio and at the bar, we wanted to create an atmosphere that was inviting and comfortable, special but not stuffy.

in this location, we were also very excited to start the next chapter of our story. In December 2015, Nautilus moved to the Belfast waterfront. Literally on top of the water and at the beginning of Main St, we have the best location and view for miles around. This location, combined with our ongoing commitment to excellent food and service, means a very special dining experience for our guests all year long. We want you, our guest, to feel welcome and taken care of whether you pop over after work or are out for a special evening. Join us, there’s room for everyone at our table.

In the three years since, we have built a thriving business on Belfast’s East Side with the help of an amazing staff and the support of our loyal customers. While we feel extremely fortunate to have been able to create our restaurant

INN

“This is a very special spot. Just minutes away from the best of Maine and Camden but quiet and serene…” — TRIP ADVISOR REVIEW

Home to fantastic French chef Manuel Mercier and natural-born innkeeper and business-partner wife MaryAnn Mercier, Youngtown Inn in Lincolnville combines cozy and comfortable with gracious and gastronomically exquisite. Maybe that’s why 93% of TripAdvisor.com respondents rate the Inn as “Excellent.” Come stay or dine, and see for yourself. Q: 24 years later, what are the highs about being innkeepers and restauranteurs? A: It delights us to own the Youngtown Inn. Located well off the main road, the inn continually surprise and surpasses our guest’s expectations. We are happy to drive up to it every day as well! This unassuming 1810 clapboard inn has provided a home and a lifestyle for our family that has been enriched by the flow of guests from afar, and sustained by a loyal base of customers who return again and again to savor Manuel’s culinary creations. We are honored to share our home with the many families who have created the tradition of gathering here for their get-aways and special occasions. Q: How would your children describe growing up in an inn? A: It depends on which of our three sons you ask. The older two now thank us for the opportunity to have grown up in the inn.

50

They value that we instilled in them a good work ethic and loved that they got to hike or sail on the weekends and not have to hang out at a mall like many urban/suburban kids do. Our 16-year-old, however, is not so happy because it is now his turn to work! Q: What changes have you seen in travelers over the last two decades? A: Travelers are being more adventuresome and are willing to turn inland from the water in search of a unique and exceptional experience. They are looking for the hidden gems and are looking for good food and a warm welcome, which we are happy to provide. Q: What’s your favorite part of the house? A: The kitchen, where we spend the majority of our day. It’s where it all begins to provide our guests with a great dining experience. Q: What piece of equipment in the kitchen would you be at a loss without? A: Knives. From slicing and dicing to butchering, without this humbled favorite it is hard to create a meal. Q: How often do diners tell you that your food is one of the best meals they’ve ever had?

A: Honestly. Every night! We never get tired of hearing it, and it keeps going year after year. Q: What’s your family’s “secret” favorite meal? A: Chicken parmesan is a family and staff favorite. My mother’s secret tip from Brooklyn: dip the chicken twice in the breadcrumbs. Q: Why has owning a historic old home in a rural setting worked so well for you and the inn business? A: We wanted to raise our family out of the city. We both gave up lucrative and demanding jobs to live a simpler life (from Wall Street to Main Street). We were determined to work hard and make it work. It takes a lot of give and take to work side by side with your partner (especially a Frenchman and an Irish/ Italian New Yorker!). We understand each other well, and despite a certain amount of yelling in the kitchen, all is forgotten at the end of our 18-hour days.

GREEN HOME SOLUTIONS OF MIDCOAST MAINE

Local resident Peter Daley has started a new environmentally-friendly home service business based in Belfast. We spent a few minutes with him to learn about what makes this business so special.

“…70% of US homes have some kind of mold issue.” — PETER DALEY

BBAB: Peter, please tell us about what you do. PD: Well, as the name implies, we offer environmentally friendly indoor and outdoor services to homeowners. BBAB: You mean helping them ensure theirs are healthy homes? We hear that phrase a lot lately. PD: Exactly. Green Home Solutions is a business that is committed to helping improve life for families, pets and the planet. We provide safe and non-toxic protection from unwanted pests, mold, inanimate airborne impurities and odors around the home and the workplace, naturally! BBAB: You said a mouthful there. Can you break it down for us? PD: Well, let’s take mold, for example. Say your home has a musty odor that won’t go away. Or maybe you’ve been looking at that water stain on the ceiling and wondering what it means. It’s estimated that as much as 70% of US homes have some type of mold issue. Any moisture intrusion can accelerate growth, and cause big problems with mold. And most times, you don’t even see it. BBAB: How would I know if I had mold? I’m not even sure what mold is.

PD: Mold is a fungi. Fungi are a very large group of organisms that range from single-celled to larger things like mushrooms. They live by invading organic matter and absorbing nutrients. Their feeding causes rot and decay. BBAB: Sounds nasty. PD: It can be. As I said, mold, which is a fungi, requires moisture and oxygen to live. You’ve probably seen mold on old bread, or maybe your shower curtain has some black spots on it. These are molds. There are hundreds of different kinds. They reproduce and disperse by way of spores which can become airborne. Some people are very sensitive to mold spores and can become ill. It really isn’t something to ignore. BBAB: Until they get sick. PD: Unfortunately, sometimes yes. BBAB: Okay, so I’m a homeowner who thinks she has a mold problem. What can you do for me? PD: We would come over and do a free visual inspection. Importantly, we also can help you arrange for an independent air quality test. This test will go to a lab and confirm whether there is excessive mold present.

BBAB: Then what? PD: You’ve probably heard horror stories about the expense of treating mold and the disruptive and time-consuming processes it involves such as ripping out sheetrock and the use of harsh chemicals? BBAB: I’m afraid so. PD: Well, that’s not the case with Green Home Solutions.. We use a non-intrusive process to kill mold that is proven effective. We spray an EPA-registered ultra-fine mist that gets into all of the hidden areas of your home. We can even go behind walls if needed. Our product is proven to kill mold using natural enzymes that attack it. Because of that, Green Home Solutions typically works at a fraction of the cost of traditional demolition and reconstruction mold remediators. And we typically complete treatment in only one day. GREEN HOME SOLUTIONS OF MID-COAST MAINE Peter Daley, Belfast, ME greenhomesolutions.com/mid-coast-maine 207-613-7411 Servicing Central and Coastal Maine.
