GREETINGS FROM BELFAST & WALDO COUNTY! Born and raised in New York City, I subsequently lived in Boston, Honolulu, Cheyenne, southern New Hampshire and Southern Maine. Twelve years ago, my family and I arrived in Belfast, the latest stop in a lifelong journey—and I have no intention of ever leaving. Belfast reached out and connected with me. Our small city is deceptively simple, but reveals its wonder, charm and depth as you take the time to explore it and savor what it offers: diverse arts and culture, great food, year-round entertainment and activities and business, and lots of history. Likewise, the people here are classic Mainers: initially somewhat quiet, but warm and engaging when approached. But most of all, this place has authenticity. It is what it is—not a version of somewhere else, or an attempt to achieve a certain

effect. As the slogan emblazoned on a coffee mug at the Colonial Theater says, Maine: the way life should be; Belfast: the way it is. I’m here to stay. And I’m here to help Belfast remain what it is: a somewhat quirky, all-around fabulous place to visit, run a business, raise kids, have fun, enjoy nature and feel like you belong. Lots of people around Belfast are committed to that goal; we hope you’ll join with us to continue to make this area even stronger.

BELFAST W I N T E R W H O O P LA !

THE MONTHS THAT FOLLOW

the holiday season in Maine can seem like an endless frozen blur, but Mainers know the best ways to combat the winter blues: a blazing fire in the woodstove, good slippers and boots from a certain store down in Freeport, and as many outdoor adventures as possible that embrace—rather than avoid—the fluffy white stuff that blankets our landscape. All over the state, towns and parks organize celebrations of winter’s pleasures, and for the first time this year, Belfast joins in the snowy fun. From February 23 to 25th, 2018, the Belfast Chamber of Commerce and partner organizations will be hosting the first annual “Belfast Winter Whoopla!,” modeled in part after the beloved Winter Carnival put on by our neighbors to the north in Quebec City for over fifty years.

Plans include fat tire bike demos, ice-carving, bonfires, hot cocoa stations, and an Ice Ball dinner dance on Friday night. Don’t worry—the dance will take place indoors, at the nearby Wentworth Event Center, so there’s no risk of frostbite! Other activities will also happen inside where it’s cozy and warm, including fun for kids at the Belfast Free Library and Kids Unplugged, a “snow bash” with games and music aimed at teens at Waterfall Arts, a pancake breakfast at the YMCA, and special screenings at the Colonial Theater. It should be a great time for everyone, and a way to make the area even more of a yearround destination and hub for locals and tourists alike. Hope to see you there! ANNUAL AWARDS OUR REGION HAS MANY PLUSES: gorgeous forests and coastline, great shops and restaurants, world-class cultural offerings both sophisticated and homespun. And every single one of those delights is made possible by everyday citizens—volunteers, business owners, non-profit staffs and others—who work hard to preserve and expand all that makes our area so special. The Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated some of our many incredible contributors at the 2017 Annual Awards dinner at Point Lookout in November. The awards themselves are sponsored by local businesses—yet another way our community continues to pay it forward.

IF YOU WERE TO WANDER up Buttermilk Hill in Monroe on certain evenings, you might think you’d stumbled upon a rural idyll: kids running free, heaping bowls of potluck, and old fiddle tunes wafting from the farmhouse. Launching these Kitchen Junkets—roving weekly jam sessions that unite young families with local elders to keep the region’s music traditions alive—is one of Molly Gawler’s proudest achievements. But certainly not her only. Molly is at least a double threat: music and dance have played equally important roles in her life. She grew up in Belgrade in a household of musicians that eventually formed not just one but two bands—the Gawler Family Band with her parents and siblings and the Gawler Sisters with Edith and Elsie. While music is clearly in her blood, she studied modern

dance and circus arts professionally, and was with the highly-regarded Pilobolus Dance Theater for seven years, touring all over the world. Eventually, though, she wanted to start a family, and chose to move back to Maine and settle in Waldo County near her sisters in 2014. “I love the Belfast area’s commitment to the arts, its great vibe and familyfriendly sensibility, and the proximity to the ocean,” she says. “Plus, there’s no substitute for having my baby’s grandparents nearby to sing him lullabies.” Molly uses her expertise to teach parkour and ballet to youth at a variety of area schools, and has formed the Droplet dance company with a mission to perform work for local venues that celebrates the lifegiving force of water through story, mime, comedy, music and movement.

MOLLY GAWLER’S GUIDE TO THE AREA’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS:

• Any time I can walk on the beach in Maine is magical, but Sears Island is one of the most beautiful spots I know. • I love the innovative, thoughtful shows put on by the Women’s Works dance company. I’m very proud to be part of that collective of artists. • Don’t miss the Laotian dumplings with ginger sauce at Laan Xang Cafe in Belfast! • The All-Comers Band, which performs at the Belfast Flying Shoes Community Dance, showcases some of the abundant musical talent this area has to offer—and I’m not just saying that because my family helps lead it!

“Anyone who does business with Belmont will be pleased and impressed with the care and professionalism of Dan Miller and the entire staff. We could not be happier and would highly recommend Belmont Boatworks to anyone needing solutions to tough boating problems.” —Peter F. Reilly, Customer (May 2017) Just outside of Belfast on a straight stretch of Route 3 passing through Belmont sits a building, and if you can catch a glimpse of the shop through all the boats, your eyes will find the likeness of an inverted hull serving as the roof for Belmont Boatworks. Founded in 2012 by Dan Miller with the simple goals of providing affordable transportation, storage, maintenance and repair for all types of boats and all types of boat people. Whether you are looking for boat transport in/out of state, full waterfront services, a topquality mechanical shop or expert paint and varnish work including Awl-Grip, Belmont Boatworks is the shop for you. They also offer shrink wrapping services, fiberglass repairs, moorings and storage space for everything from boats to motorhomes.

Belmont Boatworks latest expansion is in the area of wooden boat construction, repair and maintenance. To ensure success in this endeavor, John O’Donovan, a fifth generation master carpenter and boat builder, has been brought aboard in the carpentry shop. John has an extensive education and background in traditional wooden boat building and restoration, most recently as co-owner of the highly regarded O’Donovan & Dole. After eight years of interesting opportunities, which include a once in a lifetime chance to work on the Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 30 project, John now continues his lifelong love and passion here at Belmont Boatworks. Among all the good things John brings with him, the design and tooling for an exceptional 14’ traditional plank Peapod can be counted as one of the best. The

O’Donovan Peapod is available in a variety of finishes per the owner’s requests. Belmont Boatworks has a dedicated and skilled team of 15; all can-do types and craftsmen who thoroughly enjoy working with customers. Each and every department is staffed with veterans of the boating world. “All of us are kind of finicky artists,” is the way Dan describes his crew of men and women. This kind of dedication to their craft is what brings Belmont’s customers back year after year. There are more ways than ever for Midcoast Mainers and visitors to benefit from this kind of woodsy medicine. With the recent completion of two new projects—the Belfast Rail Trail and the Hills to Sea Trail—the options for walkers, hikers, and bikers in the Belfast area to explore our forests have expanded exponentially in the last year alone. The Rail Trail—officially called the Belfast Rail Trail Along the Passagassawakeag, but more often referred to as the “Passy Rail Trail”—was an effort some fifteen years in the making. The flat, wide, gravel-covered path replaces part of what was the old Belfast & Moosehead Lake railroad line, a standard-gauge railroad that operated from 1871 to 2007. 10

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

Establishing the trail was no easy feat: the city had to raise $400,000 for its construction; pulling up the tracks meant getting approval from the federal government; and accessing the trail’s entrance from downtown Belfast required crossing over a 700-foot strip of land owned by the Penobscot McCrum potato processing plant, which was initially reluctant to allow public access. But in 2016, after negotiating with the city council, the property’s owners agreed to a deal, clearing the way for the trail to link up with the half-mile long Harbor Walk, which winds from the Belfast Boat House up to the footbridge.

The trail officially opened in June 2017 with a 5k fun run. Today, the path stretches from the entrance to the Belfast footbridge 2.3 miles up the river to City Point. Managed by the Coastal Mountain Land Trust, the trail is bucolic—equal parts shady and sun-dappled; dotted with stone benches, hemlocks, and a trestle bridge—and is already hugely popular with locals and visitors alike. Bikers can make a loop by taking a right at the end of the trail and crossing over the footbridge to get back to town. From the City Point end of the Rail Trail, you need only cross the street to find yourself on the even more ambitious new 47-mile Hills to Sea Trail, which goes all the way from Belfast’s harbor

12

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

to Unity Village, deep in Waldo County, crossing over Frye Mountain and through the rural towns of Knox, Freedom, Montville, and Waldo on the way. Like the rail trail, the Hills to Sea Trail’s very existence is a remarkable achievement, particularly given that work on the project only started in 2012 and required the participation and generosity of some 60 private landholders. The beautiful trail zigzags through nearly 7,000 acres of conserved lands, with some 30 miles on land that is privately owned. Rather than easements, the Waldo County Trail Coalition (itself made up of nine Waldo County organizations) secured access to the land through handshake agreements,

meaning that sections of it might be subject to change in the future. Nevertheless, last year the trail opened with seven trailheads, each with helpful kiosks and parking, and as many other access points. Open year round to hikers, runners, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers, the trail doesn’t allow bikes, and in certain places dogs are restricted as well. In the fall months, some sections are closed for hunting, so check with the Coalition’s website before packing your granola bars and heading out. Is there anywhere better for a forest bath than a 47-mile trail through the woods that ends on the ocean? We can’t think of one. You’ll be more relaxed in no time.

You’ll stop in your tracks as you stroll along Belfast’s harbor walk past the Front Street Shipyard—there is always some magnificent vessel undergoing work. A relatively recent addition to the local business landscape, but one which draws upon centuries of boatbuilding heritage, Front Street has already made a huge name for itself crafting and restoring the highest quality boats imaginable.

As anyone who loves architectural beauty knows, this region offers much in the way of visual delight. The streets of downtown Belfast, for example, are a veritable living museum of 19th century architecture, due the city’s industrial history. Belfast was founded in 1770, but business began in earnest only after 1800, first in lumber, then in shipbuilding, later in shoemaking. Waterfront factories sprang up and sailing ships headed south. Outbound loaded with manufactured goods, hay, or ice, they returned with coal to run the mills and heat the many fine houses built with the proceeds of all that commerce. By the dawn of the 20th century, Belfast’s central street grid was essentially filled in. The houses that still grace those treelined streets mark successive chapters in the waterfront trade, built as they were in whatever style was currently in vogue: Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Victorian, Colonial Revival. (The red brick and granite commercial district reflects a more sober imperative: avoiding a repeat of fires that devastated the downtown in 1865 and 1873.) The Age of Sail not only made building Belfast’s grand homes possible, it also produced the skill still evident in architectural details crafted by

shipwrights who doubled as house carpenters. The elaborately framed windows, rounded trim profiles, and hardwood-paneled interiors you see around town often show a distinctly nautical touch.

historic preservation movement had emerged, along with a generation of modern architects attuned to regional building traditions, local materials, environmentally sustainable practices, and historical context.

Belfast’s visual treasures are not exclusive to the mansions of Congress and Church Streets, or to its stately commercial and municipal buildings. Modest, vernacular gable-front dwellings here embody their own austere beauty and idiosyncratic charm, as do the seemingly endless local permutations of the connected carriage barn.

In a reprise of the old 19th century formula, a revived shipbuilding industry is again generating activity along the waterfront, boosting the local economy and filling the harbor with floating works of the boatwright’s art. Missing out on the 1980s waterfront condo boom now looks like a spectacular stroke of luck for lovers of beautiful buildings.

And while boom times built Belfast, hard times helped preserve its architectural character. A sharp decline in local industry in the 1960s and 1970s largely spared the old in-town buildings the formulaic aesthetic “upgrades” popular at the time, and kept the surrounding woods and farmland nearly free of suburban sprawl.

The following photo essay highlights that good luck by featuring some of the Belfast area’s splendid architectural details, old and new. For those who come to Belfast seeking design inspiration, whether on shore or afloat, our suggestion is simple: Get out and look around. There’s a lot to see.

By the time the regional economy began to rebound, spurred by an influx of back-to-the-landers in the 1970s, the

MIDCOAST MAINE — with its quiet hills, rocky coastline, and vast swaths of woodlands—is naturally home to an abundance of wild animals. Visitors can expect to see all sorts: soaring eagles, playful porpoises, doe-eyed deer, and so on. But the Belfast area is also home to a host of other less-expected animals, and ripe with opportunities to visit them. Alpacas, for one, are definitely having a moment in Waldo County. It’s easy to see why people fall in love with them. They’re ridiculous looking. When they stare at you straight on it’s like coming face-to-face with some kind of cuddly alien. Many of them appear to be wearing toupees. But all teasing aside, people really love

their fleece—it’s both warmer than wool and not as prickly. And it doesn’t contain lanolin, so it’s hypoallergenic. If you’ve never met an alpaca, or felt their soft-as-silk fleece, you’re in luck, because in greater Belfast alone, there are no fewer than three separate alpaca farms welcoming visitors to meet their herds. Northern Solstice Farm was first, opening in Unity in 2004. Robin and Corry Pratt have been hosting visitors to their farm and retail shop—and spreading the gospel of alpaca—ever since. Today, their farm has 33 alpacas, and they sell socks, scarves, vests, and toys, all made from alpaca wool, at three retail locations—the one on the farm as well as two stand-alone Maine Alpaca

Experience shops in Ellsworth and Northport. They even teach a five-hour class in Northport for those looking to start their own herds called “Alpaca 101.” Northern Solstice’s enthusiasm for the beasts is clearly contagious: Ben Cowan fell in love with them after a visit to the Pratt’s farm. In 2014, with alpacas purchased from Robin and Corry, he and his partner Michele Hutchins opened their own small alpaca farm—Blue Alpaca Ranch and Store, on Poors Mill Road, right outside downtown Belfast. Customers are welcome to visit and meet Solstice Murphy, Space Cowboy’s Maize, and the rest of their herd.

Another popular offering is their Sox School, where lessons are given on how to use Circular Sock Machines, developed during the civil war, which “cranks” out socks. Every June, the farm hosts a four-day “Crankin” that draws sock-cranking enthusiasts from all over North America. For four-legged beasts of a different variety, Sea Horse Stables is a recently opened equestrian facility with indoor

and outdoor rings set on 30 acres of land just minutes from downtown Belfast and with a view of Penobscot Bay. The enormous, beautiful facility gives lessons, hosts 3 and 5 day camps for kids, and offers boarding and therapeutic riding all year round. Waldo County is also home to one of the largest animal sanctuaries on the East Coast. Peace Ridge Sanctuary was founded in 2001 on a 15-acre piece of land in Penobscot, but in 2016, with the help of some deep-pocketed supporters, moved to a sprawling, wooded 800 acre property in Brooks dotted with pastures and ponds. Around 240 neglected, exploited, and abused animals live there at any one time, and since 2001 the organization has rescued some 1100 creatures. About half of them are dogs,

but Peace Ridge also provides a home for chickens, cows, goats, pigs, sheep, bunnies and horses, among others. The sanctuary has monthly open houses for visitors, and also offers private tours (for donors) by appointment. Supporters are also encouraged to sponsor animals— prices range from $10/month for a chicken to $50 for a horse or cow. Dogs and bunnies are available for adoption, too. PAWS, another animal adoption center, is headquartered in Camden and serves the whole Midcoast. In addition to finding homes for pets in need, the shelter offers a summer camp at its new facility, bringing children in to learn about caring for animals responsibly. Too old for summer camp? They also offer yoga with cats. Really, they do.

ALPACAS & HORSES & BIRDIES, OH MY!

PHOTO: CARLY ROBERTS

BIRDS ( AN D BIRDI E S ) For those who prefer to see animals from behind a pair of binoculars, the Belfast region is home to some prime spots for birdwatching. Moose Point and Knight Pond are two off-the-beaten-path locations that are popular among those in the know. Truly dedicated birders can sign up for one of the tours offered by the Schoodic Institute further north. But prime sightings can be had even right in downtown Belfast. The footbridge across the Passagassawakeag allows birders to look both upriver and out towards Belfast Harbor, offering birders the chance to see bald eagles and osprey cruising over the river, and loons and other species can be spied from City Park. For birdies of an altogether different sort, there are at least three golf courses in the area—all classic 9 hole, par 36. The Country View Golf Club, in Brooks, calls itself “Maine’s Most Scenic,” and indeed, the views are stunning. Northport Golf Club was established more than a century ago and is particularly friendly for walkers. And at the Searsport Pines Golf Course, a public course two miles off of Route 1, everyone—golfers and non-golfers alike—can grab a drink or a bite to eat at the on-site Grille, which looks out over the water fountain by the course’s 9th hole.

If you leave one of these organizations with a new furry friend, there’s no shortage of resources to help you keep them healthy. Little River Veterinary Hospital in Northport has been serving Waldo County’s beloved animal companions for more than thirty-five years, and the majority of its staff are either from the area or have lived here for decades. Need someone to watch over Fido or Princess? In addition to the Canine Country Club in Northport—a 10,000 square foot facility that’s particularly convenient for visitors to Maine—there’s also Puddleduck Boarding Kennel, a “luxury boarding facility” on 40 acres outside of Belfast. It boasts flat-screen televisions and tons of room for playing, but its biggest draw is probably the fact that its proprietor, Frances Plessner, is a highly sought-after dog trainer who, in 2013, was asked to train then Secretary of State John Kerry’s puppy. You can go for years in Maine without seeing the moose that decorate our t-shirts, mugs and bumper stickers. Fortunately, the Midcoast area offers a veritable menagerie of other fine beasts—including the ones curled up by your own woodstove—and the means to keep them happy and well.

B E L FA ST H A R B O R F E ST The Belfast Rotary Club Invites You to Celebrate the Boating Traditions of Belfast, Maine

August 17-19, 2018 Steamboat Landing and Heritage Park

The National Boatbuilding Challenge is the centerpiece of the Belfast Harbor Fest. This year, the 11th, has a special added feature—the World Championship will be contested in Belfast as part of the overall competition. Builders Cody Keithan and Bruno Borzino won the 2017 Championship in Georgetown, SC last October, bringing this year’s Championship contest home to Belfast. Harbor Fest starts on Friday evening with a Rotary Charity Gala to benefit the Waldo County YMCA’s summer camp program. This event features both Live and Silent Auctions of Artworks and crafts from Belfast’s best artists and artisans. Food tastings are featured from favorite local restaurants and our bar is catered by Rollie’s. Of special note in this year’s auction will be the original art for this year’s Harbor Fest Poster from local artist Dianne Horton, our Belfast Harbor Fest featured artist for 2018.

Saturday opens with a Blueberry Pancake Breakfast at 7:30, followed by a 5K “Bug” Run at 8:30, Exhibits and Vendors at 9 and the Boatbuilding Challenge at 11. Builders (two-person teams), have four hours to build a 12 foot Passy Skiff, which is then judged for quality, and at 4 pm, a relay race completes the contest. Prizes are awarded at Saturday’s BBQ Awards Banquet which follows the boat races. For kids, there is a bounce house, marine touch tank, knot tying, face painting, a rain gutter regatta and, of special note, a Touch-a-Truck event featuring all types of fun vehicles to explore. Enjoy music from 10 to 4. Also featured is our Classic Boat Show, both on land and on the water. Some boats will even be offering free sails on the Bay. Throughout the weekend local craftsmen and other vendors display their wares and several food merchants help keep our visitors well fed. At noon Saturday, Belfast’s Come Boating! will stage their 18th Annual Regatta, a four-mile rowing race into the Bay and back along the Coastline to the finish at Steamboat Landing. The club also offers free community rows Saturday and Sunday afternoons in their Cornish Gigs.

At 4pm Saturday, Belfast Parks and Rec is sponsoring a puppet show featuring the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers. This is fun for the whole family and has been a standing-roomonly show for the last two years. Sunday starts with the famous Cardboard Boat Races. Come early to choose your favorite entry. Prizes are awarded in multiple classes and spectators enjoy guessing which boats will float and which will sink. At noon, Sunday Waldo County’s Habitat for Humanity holds its fundraising Lobster Gala featuring your choice of lobster, steak, hamburgers or hot dogs. Music is provided by the award-winning Juke Rockets. Belfast Rotary, now in its 92nd year, is presenting the Belfast Harbor Fest for the 9th time, thanks to our great sponsors and the thousands of visitors who attend each year. All proceeds from our Rotary events are used to benefit local charities, families and student scholarships, contributing nearly $100,000 annually. Belfast Harbor Fest is Rotary’s commitment to celebrate and honor Belfast’s Maritime tradition and at the same time raise money to assist our charitable giving.

BELFAST THE BAY AND BEYOND

THE BELFAST AREA has a well-deserved reputation as a hotbed of creativity, eccentricity, and flair, thanks to the high number of artists and craftspeople, homesteaders and farmers, hippies and healers who live and work here. Our lovable weirdness has earned us the nickname “Moonbat Kingdom,” after the 2012 Wes Anderson film (and that nickname in turn gave its moniker to the popular Moonbat Bakery). Small wonder, then, that our citizens dress to impress…but not necessarily in ways that follow current trends. Herewith, a sampling of some of the fashionable local iconoclasts you may see strutting their stuff around town.

LIIS

The entire region benefits from Liis’ impeccable sartorial eye: first through Justine, the brilliantly-curated consignment shop she started in downtown Belfast, and now at Indigo in Thomaston. When it comes to dressing herself, Liis combines European polish, folk art warmth and chic minimalism.

SARA

Gender neutral parent. Biracial community organizer. Witch. Sara constructs outfits through these identities, by mindfully combining opposites—feminine and masculine, grunge and sophisticated—and accenting with over-thetop color and pattern.

ANDO

Ando plays, teaches, writes and promotes music in the Belfast area. He says that his exquisite fashion sense is “baste in a Mississippi upbringing and brined for forty years in Maine.” His go-to houses of couture include Reny’s and Goodwill.

NO GLUTEN? NO PROBLEM! BY ARIELLE GREENBERG BYWATER

Gone are the days when everyone dove for the bread basket without a second thought. More and more Americans are realizing that, for a host of reasons, consuming wheat and other forms of gluten are not conducive to them being well. As a result, many restaurants have begun offering alternatives to our grainheavy diet. Whether you suffer from celiac or Lyme disease, are trying to eat fewer carbohydrates, or simply have found that eating less gluten seems best for your body, it’s so nice when you don’t have to sacrifice the pleasure of going out to eat in order to feel good.

The Belfast region is becoming known as “the next ‘it spot’ for food” in New England, according to chef Evan Mallett, who recently opened the Ondine Oyster + Wine Bar in the building known as the Gothic in downtown Belfast. And among the many well-reviewed eateries, there are a host of places that offer delicious gluten-free choices. Ondine itself has several gluten-free items on its seafood-rich menu of “American modern heritage” cooking, including the Hardshell Clams dinner entree, which is served with polenta, greens and smoked bacon in a spicy pork broth. Folks seeking a quick, homemade lunch can stop by the Daily Soup’s cozy little spot across from the Belfast Co-op (which has a whole section of gluten-free groceries) to try one of the ever-changing and ever-comforting gluten-free specials, such as the Yellow Pea and Coconut Milk soup served with wilted spinach and spiced yogurt. Up in Searsport, Me Lon Togo, a new spot featuring West African-inflected fourcourse prix fixe dinner menus, often provides a gluten-free option such as the Cognac Chicken, served with housemade sweet potato gnocchi. And on Route One in Northport, Pizza Permare can make any of its locavore wood-fired pizzas on gluten-free dough. If these haven’t already started you salivating, check out the following pages for more enticing gluten-free delights, including exotic appetizers, satisfying dinner salads and sandwiches, desserts and even gourmet hot dogs.

A cooking prodigy, Raymelle Moody-Guthrie opened the Moody Dog food truck as a way to achieve her dream of owning a small business with a local, natural focus. The truffles made by nutritionist Linda Prichard and sold exclusively at her Fancy Plants booth at United Farmers Market aren’t just gluten-free: they’re also raw, dairy-free and made from plants. Don’t believe something so wholesome can be decadent and delish? Try her take on the famous Ferrero Rocher chocolates, which Linda assembles by hand using cacao powder, agave, hazelnuts and coconut nectar. Even the vanilla she uses is gluten-free!

Just outside of town and recently under new local ownership, Bell the Cat is a favorite place to have a coffee or sandwich, and their Midcoast take on the New York City classic of lox-on-a-bagel, the Ducktrap Smoked Salmon, marries Maine-cured salmon with caper-red onion cream cheese on a glutenfree bagel. (All of their completely yummy sandwiches can be ordered on GF wraps or breads, too.)

“We are thankful every day to be part of this community. We are delighted to have you visit us and we will take care of you in any way we can.” — ANTHONY & TINA

Some say that great ideas start on a napkin in a bar. In Delvino’s Grill & Pasta House’s case, it is true... The story begins in 2005 for the owners of Delvino’s, Anthony Jacovino & Tina DelSanto. Anthony went to The Lookout Pub (recently renamed The Front Street Pub) to visit his friend Katherine Loblein. The visit yielded an introduction to Katherine’s business partner, Tina DelSanto. As it turns out, Anthony and Tina were both looking for apartments… you guessed it, and Tina and Anthony became apartment mates and friends and fell in love! Then came the restaurant.

Fast forward a few years to The Lookout, again, where Tina meets Bruce Thomas, another bona fide Belfast lover. It’s 2010, and Belfast is once again going through a transformation. Delvino’s takes advantage of everything the community has to offer: lobster and mussels harvested from our harbor, as well as produce, meats and cheeses sourced locally which add flare to an eclectic Italian menu.

THE FOOD: Stepping through the doors you might think you are in New York or Boston but you’re actually in Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House in beautiful downtown Belfast. Delvino’s is the perfect date night, family gathering, relaxing, upscale location with creative

N ex t H o m e E xp e r i e n ce “Let our experience better yours.”

Today real estate buyers and sellers have high expectations for agent knowledge, transaction skills, business processes and communication style. Seasoned brokers Pamela Stanford and Lisa Caron believe NextHome Experience is a real estate company that through this client vision, best meets their philosophies, allowing them to best serve their clients. Pamela and Lisa focus on client needs and concerns, then share their insights into today’s market to help navigate clients through the selling or home buying process. They are accessible, responsive, tech-savvy, and focused on providing up-to-date information for today’s changing market. From the first showing all the way to the closing, they will be there for you, making sure each step goes smoothly, while helping with solutions as needed. As NextHome Experience brokers, they will take your real estate experience to the “Next Level”, bringing a creative and 50

solution-oriented approach, diverse business backgrounds and professional commitment to detail and follow up. As over 90% of homes are viewed online, they believe in the importance of home staging, professional photography, and offer these services as part of the whole package. Pamela, a Maine native, lives and works in the MidCoast area, specializing in waterfront and waterview properties. She also has strong ties to Waterville and the Greater Portland area, loves Maine and enjoys showing Maine real estate! Giving back to the community is important to Pamela. She volunteers at several non profits, is a member of the Belfast Garden Club, and currently holds the position of Vice President of the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce. Lisa, also a Maine native, thoroughly enjoys helping a young couple find their first home or helping an older couple downsize after raising a family.

Her path to real estate came after a long and successful career as a small business owner with her husband. With a construction background she helps clients understand the quality and condition of the properties they are viewing. She believes that looking for a home is not a 9-5 process, and works around her client’s schedules, focusing on the people, not the commission. It is extremely important to both Pamela & Lisa that sellers receive the best price possible, and buyers get the best value for the home they are purchasing.
