Welcome

Hello From Main Street It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2012 Magazine, Belfast The Bay and Beyond. Packed full of news, information, events and photography, this magazine chronicles the ways we work and play in Waldo County and beyond. This year is the start of a three-year evolution for the Magazine. Our goals are to enhance the depth and breadth of our editorial coverage, with companion content on our website; to improve accessibility to the Magazine for mobile devices; and, to provide an “insider’s” view of our area that sparks interest for both seasonal visitors and local residents. We welcome your comments and suggestions as we move toward this vision. Please stop by our office on Main Street and share your ideas with us! Exploring the farms, foods and flavors right here in our backyards is the focus of our story on page 20. Our growing season may be short, but we are fortunate to live in a region where farms are at the center of our communities and our eateries bring us together and sustain us. We hope you will try a local cafe or restaurant that you’ve never visited before! Sustaining our social lives and love of culture is also on the menu. Our region is exceptionally rich with cultural organizations that host festivities yearround featuring music, books, poetry and pie (not to mention dogs, scarecrows and skiffs!). Festive Gatherings

for One and All (page 8), covers many of the events that bring people together year after year. For an abbreviated calendar of events, browse pages 14-19. Explore the great outdoors year-round, taking in our beautiful forest trails, rivers, mountains, lakes, harbors, and beaches in all weather. A Breath of Fresh Air (page 34) offers a look at the many ways to enjoy the countryside and coast that are so accessible from here. For planning a stay of any length in the area, we have charted attractions within an easy drive from Belfast (see page 32) and we include a few ideas for spontaneous family adventures in Family Fun from A-Z on page 6. For your next trip down Route #3, check out Local Routes (page 64) to see what you can find and do along the Road to Liberty. And, last but not least, our members are here for you! Local service providers, educational organizations, shops and suppliers are listed at the back of this Magazine. Please use the directory to find whatever you need; from flowers to furniture, haircuts to hardware. We wish you a fabulous experience here in our corner of Maine. Stop by and tell us all about it!

Windsor Chairmakers

L

ocated just six miles north of Camden on U.S. Route 1, Windsor Chairmakers has been a must-see destination for a quarter of a century. The owners, Jim and Nance Brown, have created the quintessential Yankee workshop on a historic 5-acre farmstead. The old barn now serves as the workshop, where you are invited to wander through and see one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture being made. While Windsor Chairmakers is famous for the craftsmanship and comfort of their Windsor chairs, you will also see the crew at work hand-crafting dining tables, beds, buffets, stools, benches, and custom pieces. The circa 1800 farmhouse welcomes guests to explore over 14 rooms, all decorated to showcase the furniture made on site. As you walk from room to room, you’ll enjoy the traditional furniture designs and the beauty of the time-honored finishes, an experience designed to inspire you when choosing your own custom furniture. The Shaker Gallery, an addition to the farmhouse in 2002, displays the Shaker-inspired furniture also made here. The beauty of this museum-like space and the simple and elegant lines of Shaker chairs, tables, and benches take you back to a less complicated time. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Windsor Chairmakers invites you to come explore this special place. You can choose to purchase the perfect piece from the showroom, arrange to have a custom piece built for you, or come by just to visit. You’ll find that this business reflects Jim Brown’s philosophy about making furniture here in Maine: “Things are best kept simple.” U.S. Route 1, 2596 Atlantic Highway Lincolnville, Maine 04849 800-789-5188 www.windsorchair.com

IN THE BELFAST AREA, WEEKNIGHT SUMMER DANCE PARTIES GIVE WAY TO FALL HARVEST GATHERINGS AND THEN WINTER HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS. THE STREETS AND PARKS OF THE REGION BECOME PACKED WITH PEOPLE CELEBRATING THE ARTS, THE SEASON, OR THE PURSUIT OF VERY LARGE CHEESE LOGS. Yes, you read that correctly: cheese logs. Surely there is someone in your life who enjoys chasing after humongous dairy cylinders? No? Then read on to explore the many fairs, gallery walks, and other offerings that happen here around the year; there is sure to be a festival to please everyone you know.

For a complete list of fairs and festivals go to: www.belfastmaine.org/calendar

10 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2012

Belfast Art Walks are the place to be on Friday evenings. Performances by professional poets, musicians, jugglers, and dancers entertain people strolling between exhibits. Inside participating galleries, the walls are hung with a startling breadth and depth of fine art. Work might include whimsical paintings at High Street Gallery and Studio; scenic photography at Parent Gallery; metal and stone jewelry at Lauren Veale Jewelry Studio; paintings and mixed media at 75 Main Street Studio; small works at Betts Gallery; encaustics and prints at Post Office Studio; nude photography in natural settings at Galerie Dufour; multimedia and abstract work at Aarhus Gallery; or intricate graphite landscapes at Susan A. Cooney’s studio. Art Walks take place on the first Friday of the month from June to December and every Friday in July and August. On July 7 and 8, the 7th annual Arts in the Park, a juried fair featuring over eighty artists and artisans, fills Heritage

Park on the bay with high quality arts and crafts, continuous live music, and food vendors. The location, at the water’s edge with boats sailing past, can’t be beat. From July 27-29, the Belfast Bound Books Festival celebrates the book-lovers’ paradise found downtown. Co-sponsored by booksellers including Beyond the Sea, Old Professor’s Bookshop, Artisan Books & Bindery, The Good Table, BellaBooks, and The Green Store, and supported by Our Town Belfast, bookworms can go from shop to shop for readings, signings, storytelling, and talks. There’s more literary pleasure to be had at the Belfast Poetry Festival in October, the only literary event where poets are paired with artists and all sorts of amazing one-of-a-kind collaborations and friendships ensue. Poetry and art lovers from around the state and country witness the results at the two-day gathering, with readings, workshops, and participatory events.

Everyone’s welcome at Belfast’s 4th annual summer Street Party. The boisterous event features old favorites like dunk tanks, rides, children’s crafts, music, and street food. But you’ve probably never seen anything quite like the Maine Wienerfest in September, where dachshunds get their day in sun with a parade, costume contest, doxie derby, competitions and wackiness. Another standout is the Waldo County Pie & Story Festival, October 7, now in its 10th year, which brings together some of the best parts of rural living: pie (celebrated through a contest, fast-paced benefit auction, and $1 slices), fiddling and storytelling.

Deeper into fall, let the area’s magical Halloween traditions cast a spell over you. Searsport’s Fling Into Fall gets you in the mood with hayrides, jack-o’lanterns and scarecrow competitions. On Halloween, take in the gentle-spirited Ashwood Waldorf School’s All Hallows’ Eve Walk at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden, where fairies, princesses, knights and other creatures are on view as you wind your way through candlelit woods at dusk. Then move on to historic

Cedar Street in Belfast: thousands of families from the region converge in costume for old-fashioned trick-or-treating. Ring in 2013 with New Year’s By the Bay, a chem-free celebration that starts with family-friendly fare in the afternoon—balloon and magic shows, music, carriage rides—and then segues into jazz, bluegrass, Celtic, rock and other grownup fare. The festivities go on until the year is over: restaurants stay open late, churches serve cocoa and snacks, and it all ends with a community Drum and Rabble Corps procession to a midnight bonfire at the harbor at the bottom of Main Street.

“Kind of like a tiny, rural South by Southwest” is how Bangor Daily News reporter Emily Burnham describes the Free Range Music Festival, slated for April 28. In its first two years, the hip festival has hosted over fifty local, regional, and touring acts—everything from a capella to Americana, rock to rap—in multiple venues around downtown Belfast. At the height of summer, the Maine Celtic Celebration brings out the bagpipes and tartans for its annual homage to the rich Celtic heritage found along the coast. Traditional Highland Heavy Games and fiddle and fife music delight one and all, and there are also nontraditional pleasures, like a 5K road race, a shamrock-laden parade, just-for-fun Celtic dog breeds show... and that aforementioned New World Cheese Rolling Championship. More summer fun on the waterfront comes a few weeks later with the Belfast Harbor Fest, August 17-19. Raise a glass at the Three Tides launch party, then run off any guilt at the road race the next morning. The rest of the

day is spent watching or participating in the Boatbuilding Challenge, in which two-person teams build a 12-foot wooden skiff in under four hours and then test their creation with a rowing race.

A boat show, Come Boating!’s annual regatta, and children’s activities round out the nautical entertainment. Extreme sports enthusiasts will also love the New England Runner Sled

Championships, held in late February on Hogback Mountain in Montville. Anyone can enter the timed trials, competing for the title of “Fastest Runner Sledder in all the Land.”

At Maine Fiddle Camp, held several times over the summer months, the whole family can spend a rustic weekend or week learning tunes by ear from traditional musicians. It’s known as a place to make new friends through jam sessions, evening coffeehouse performances, dances, swimming, and communal meals with delicious wholesome food. From September 6-10, knitters, weavers, quilters, spinners and more meet at Searsport Shores on the ocean, where, in addition to the more typical campground fare, you’ll find evidence that a fiber artist is in residence: goats roam near an organic wool-dyeing garden. Fiber College holds classes with renowned artist-teachers for all levels of crafters; it’s also a friendly retreat, with potlucks, a fashion show, demonstrations, vendors, and plenty of time for relaxed chat and crafting in the fresh sea air.

CULTURE DOESN’T ONLY HAPPEN AT FESTIVALS: Many Venues In The Belfast Area Host Ongoing Series. Here Are Just A Few Highlights: Belfast Flying Shoes’ nationally-known contradances, first Fridays of the month Excellent year-round matinee and evening theater with the Belfast Maskers

Many people in the Belfast area organize their whole year around the Common Ground Country Fair, a one-of-a-kind three-day festival celebrating sustainable rural living, put on by the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association. All the delicious food for sale—everything from wood-fired pizza to pad thai to ice cream—is made right in Maine. Plenty of country fair favorites (vegetable contests, livestock, great music) are on hand, but there are also events you won’t find at any other country fair in the world: vendors selling high-end handmade goods from gold jewelry to tricked-out chicken coops; daily parades with children dressed up in gorgeous handmade vegetable costumes; lectures and workshops on everything from composting toilets to herbal wildcrafting; and the Wednesday Spinners, a group of women from Down East Maine who have been spinning wool together at the Fair for 35 consecutive years.

Make 2012 the year you reconnect with a long-lost passion or pick up a new hobby or interest at any of the area’s many unusual fairs.

FLAVORS BY ARIELLE GREENBERG BYWATER No doubt about it: the locavore movement is all the rage. But, you don’t have to make reservations at a chic “farm-to-table” restaurant to experience the pleasures of locally grown foods. When the weather cooperates, why not skip the table completely and eat right where the food is grown or made? Our region has a plethora of farmer’s markets and farm stands, vineyards, walk-up ice cream shops, cheese makers and other places where you can partake in delicious bounty right where it’s produced. Lo.ca.vore (n): a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market.

MOFGA One important name to know in Waldo County food production is MOFGA, the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association, the oldest such organization in America. MOFGA offers programs including farm apprenticeships, workshops on topics like kitchen licensing and pork processing, certification for organic food that meets its high standards, and the world-renowned Common Ground Fair, the exquisite celebration of rural living held annually on the third weekend of September. MOFGA has more information about these programs online; its website also offers great resources for folks in search of food, including a searchable list of certified organic farms and farmer’s markets, plus links to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms, through which you can get fresh seasonal produce delivered weekly. MOFGA also maintains links to state organizations like Get Real Get Maine, making it easy to find out exactly where to go for everything from crabmeat to buffalo sausage to kale to raspberries. For a complete list of farms and food resources go to: www.mofga.org

In the Belfast area, you could grab your basket and hit a market almost every day of the week. Photo (above): North Branch Farm (below): Cassidy Parmley

22 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2012

FARMERS MARKETS Many of these can also be found at the area’s numerous farmer’s markets. In the Belfast area, you could grab your basket and hit a market almost every day of the week: on Saturdays, meet your farmer at the community center in Unity; on Tuesdays, there’s a market on Main Street across from the post office in Searsmont; on Wednesdays, at Hamilton Town Wharf in Searsport; on Thursdays, there’s the Davistown market at the corner of Route 3 and Marshall Shores Road in Liberty; and on Fridays, the Belfast market is now

behind Waterfall Arts on High Street. Don’t have a market basket? Pick up one of Diane’s gorgeous hand-woven ones from Hubbard Brook Farm. Where? At a farmer’s market, of course! Once at market, you can stock up on potatoes, spinach, garlic and squash from a variety of farmers, but you’ll also find eggs, herbs, honey, syrup and bread, and less obvious fare, including prepared foods like bacon, chicken salad, cider, blue cheese, jam, scones, cheesecake, and more. And the markets aren’t held only during Maine’s

(relatively short) growing season. There are winter markets, too, featuring produce plucked from hoop houses and root cellars, plus turkey, granola, cookies, soap, yarn, and wooden spoons. You may get so hungry filling your basket that you can’t wait to get home to eat, which is also fine, because many vendors sell foods you can munch on while shopping. (At the Belfast market, we especially recommend Fire Fly Farm’s savory hand pies, available with both meat and vegetarian ingredients, or any indulgent treat from Sweet Henry’s.)

Did you know that in addition to getting produce through farm CSAs, you can now get fish and seafood through Community Supported Fisheries?

CSAs Some area market farmers, like Freedom Farm and New Beat Farm, also offer CSA programs in which you purchase an annual share in the farm’s harvest and are rewarded throughout the season with a variety of goods you can pick up at market. Other farms have CSAs available for pickup at the farm or through local delivery, each with their own unique mix of products. All will fill your fridge with healthy greens and other veggies. Village Farm in Freedom also provides eggs, yogurt and flowers; North Branch Farm in Monroe offers beef, pork, lamb and fruit tree saplings; Singing Nettle Farm in Brooks prepares herbal teas, salves and honey; and After the Fall Farm in Montville focuses on winter and spring shares, with a seasonally-appropriate emphasis on hearty root vegetables. CSAs are popular right now, but you can also go the old-fashioned route by pulling your car over to the side of the road to check out the area’s many delightful, informal farm stands. A Maine tradition, farm stands—often just a rickety folding table and a cooler, both unmanned, and a box in which you drop your money on the honor system—display lettuce, melons, carrots, blueberries, eggs, and more.

Online, Eat Maine Foods offers an interactive map showing you where farm stands can be found along your next country drive. Or, in downtown Belfast, try the indoor farmstand at deluxe vegetarian restaurant Chase’s Daily, with produce brought from the farm to the eatery each morning. Fruits and vegetables aren’t the only things you can buy fresh: in the Belfast region, you can also purchase sweets, dairy products, grains, wines and other prepared foods right where they’re made. Both Stone Fox Creamery in Monroe and John’s Ice Cream in Liberty serve outrageously delicious, fresh ice cream in flavors like Espresso Bean and Apple Vanilla Swirl. Just as decadent are the handmade donuts from Whistling Kettle Farm Bakery: pick up the molasses, chocolate glazed and other delectable flavors at the Belfast Co-op. Organic maple syrup, sugar and candy is in supply at Kinney’s Sugarhouse in Knox, which you can eat with pancakes made from Captain Dave’s Mix from Fiddler’s Green Farm in Belfast, which also sells a wide variety of hot cereals, granolas, flours, beans and other pantry items through their virtual farmstand online.

CSFs We’re right on the coast, and we haven’t yet talked about food from the sea! Did you know that in addition to getting produce through farm CSAs, you can now get fish and seafood through CSFs (Community Supported Fisheries)? Port Clyde Fresh Catch sells seasonal shares of wild-caught fish, shrimp, crab and lobster fished with ecologically sustainable methods, available for pickup at locations in the Belfast region. Another way to get your fill of crustaceans is at our local pound, Young’s. At its waterside location, pick up clams, mussels, haddock,

Insider’s Take— Village Farm’s Favorite You-Pick Farms and Orchards and of course, lobsters, right off the boats, or dine at a picnic table with a view. Young’s is BYOB, so you may want to plan ahead and make a trip to Winterport Winery, which recommends their dry, chardonnay-like pear wine paired with seafood; Cellardoor Winery (Lincolnville), which offers Queen Anne’s Lace, a tropical white blend with a lemon finish that would go well with spicy shrimp; or Marshall Wharf Brewing Co. (Belfast), where you can grab a growler to go full of Tug Pale Ale. All offer tastings and a shop on site.

Polly Shyka, matriarch of the Village Farm in Freedom, offers these tips for harvesting your own produce: Our area has some great pick-your-own farms. Berries and apples spring to mind first. You can choose from organic and conventional operations: the region has both. But since berries and tree fruits are among the most chemically managed crops and we are feeding three young and hungry children, our family tries to support farms that do not use fungicides, pesticides and herbicides to control disease, pests and weeds. Strawberries usually come around in late June, and Sand Hill Organic Farm in Somerville, fifteen miles east of Augusta, grows two acres of the most luscious berries imaginable. The experience of picking and loading up the car with flats of strawberries each summer has become a family tradition. For Maine’s official berry, the wild low-bush blueberry, my friends swear by Staples Homestead in Stockton Springs. It’s been in the Staples family for nearly a century; they offer old-fashioned metal rakes for picking; it’s certified organic; and the views from the quiet hills are gorgeous. For apples, we have picked at Sewall’s in Lincolnville and Hope Orchard in Hope: both are great. Sewall’s is the oldest organically certified orchard in the state, and in addition to heirloom apples, they offer vinegar and cider. Hope is an Eco Apple orchard with popular varieties of apples, and they also offer pears and pumpkins and host school groups. But I really want to get to Treworgy Orchard, further out in Levant, a bit northwest of Bangor. Besides picking apples and pumpkins, families can take hayrides or horse-drawn wagon tours, get lost in a corn maze, pet baby goats, or buy locally made treats like candy and salsa. And each fall, Treworgy hosts free weekend folk music concerts in the orchard!

Drinks What’s a delicious meal without an equally enjoyable beverage to partner with it? Three tasty ways to whet your whistle: Rosemary Cider Whisky Fizz: Cocktail from The Lost Kitchen It’s bartender Michael Casby’s job to come up with innovative, seasonal cocktails to pair with the farm-to-table food at The Lost Kitchen. For fall, he came up with the Rosemary Cider Whisky Fizz, made with local organic apple cider, Makers Mark whisky, rosemary syrup and frothy egg white and lemon, garnished with a sprig of rosemary. Toughcats IPA: Beer from Marshall Wharf (and served at Three Tides) D Sai Ghock (Laotian sausage), Laan Xang Cafe: 19 Main St., Belfast Grilled homemade sausages stuffed with pork, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves, served with steamed vegetables and Lao chili sauce.

The seasonal Toughcats India Pale Ale was first brewed for the 2011 Belfast Harborfest, in tribute and in collaboration with North Haven trio The Toughcats. A single hop Palisade IPA, Toughcats goes down smooth and light, with apricot and peach notes shining through. Caramel Mocha Latte: Coffee special from Bell the Cat At Bell the Cat, you can customize your drink—including smoothie, shake, freeze, cappuccino, chai and other options—to your heart’s content. The Caramel Mocha Latte, made with Ghirardelli chocolate, caramel Torani syrup, a shot of LaVazza espresso and steamed milk, could also be made iced, or with soymilk.

D Baked Stuffed Haddock, Ocean’s Edge Restaurant, 159 Searsport Ave, Belfast Haddock fillet filled with house-made crab meat stuffing, topped with white wine cream sauce & baked to perfection.

Retrospective

Follow in the Footsteps of the Rusticators By Arielle Greenberg Bywater

E

co-tourism is not new: people have been heading to Maine’s coastline “from away”—and from around the corner—for more than a century. The Summer 2012 exhibition at Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Summer Folk: The Tourists of Penobscot Bay, puts the high season in historical perspective, telling the stories of cottage mansions, middle class vacation homes, church group communities, motels...and the cars, boats and trains that carried people to them. As you walk through historic houses decorated to evoke period hotels and summer houses, you’ll find authentic costumes, photographs, advertisements, boats, even 100 year old vacation movies that have you wondering how Grandma managed to look so good in a black wool bathing costume. But it’s not all history lesson, nor is it happening only at the museum: the whole town is getting into the fun, with walking tours of historic Searsport properties and rowboats for rent at the town dock. Other hands-on and interactive events will include a costumed, old time baseball game; a pond where children can sail the model boats of bygone times; historic menus on offer at area restaurants (including high tea); and Victorian croquet matches on the museum’s back lawn. A BREATH of FRESH AIR By Arielle Greenberg Bywater Do you live for hilltop views or prefer riding the open sea? Feel most alive with dirt under your fingernails? Like to stop and smell the roses? The Belfast area offers every possible way to enjoy nature all year round, whether your particular passion involves boats or bikes, hiking boots or helicopters, snowballs or s’mores.

By the Beautiful Sea It’s impossible to talk about Midcoast Maine without talking about the water. From sailing to swimming to collecting sea glass, the Atlantic shore is one of the region’s most beloved— and accessible—gems. Keeping the shore accessible is part of the purpose of the new Belfast Rangeways project, in which renowned local stonecutter Douglas Coffin selects, splits and positions Maine boulders into evocative natural passageways to mark public access points to the ocean. Two have been placed so far, with more to come, in a collaborative effort funded by multiple area arts, government and conservation organizations. One of the simplest ways to enjoy the ocean might be beachcombing, and, for those who dare, frolicking in the chilly waves. Moose Point State Park in Searsport, Lincolnville Beach, Belfast Harbor, and Sandy Point Beach

in Stockton Springs are all cherished places to look out to sea. If you want to get further out, the Belfast Bay Boating Co., the steam ferry of Belfast Bay Cruises and the wooden pilothouse ketch Miss Nina, among other pleasure boats, will glide you out of the bay. Or you can learn to helm, row, sail or paddle yourself, with your own vessel or a rented one, through Thorfinn Expeditions (paddleboarding), Water Walker Kayaks (lessons and tours with a registered Maine Guide) or the kids’ programs at the Stockton Harbor Sailing Center. One of the area’s true boating miracles is Come Boating!, a volunteer, community-based program offering sails and rows with a trained coxswain free of charge all summer long—just sign up in the black notebook at the Come Boating! waterfront boatshed. If you like water that’s a little calmer and warmer, popular local places to swim, sun and boat include Swan

Lake State Park in Swanville, Lake Megunticook in Camden, and Lake St. George in Liberty. Don’t miss a stop at delicious John’s Ice Cream right next to Lake St. George after your swim (see page 64 for location). And for a different kind of dip, Belfast City Park maintains an outdoor pool with a view down to the bay.

Rider in the Sky Local fun flights offer once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to take in the scenery from above. Try Coastal Helicopters or a chartered Cessna flight with Maine Scenic Airways, both out of the Belfast airport, for sightseeing or island-hopping in style. About an hour away, Acadia Air Tours offers glider, scenic and biplane rides over gorgeous Downeast and Mount Desert Island. Central Maine Skydiving in Pittsfield and the Great Falls Balloon Festival in Lewiston every August are day trips from the Belfast area. A Breath of Fresh Air

The Ground Beneath Your Feet Of course, there are also more leisurely ways to take in the outdoors: tee up at the Searsport Pines Golf Course or Northport Golf Club, stroll around town on a self-guided architectural walking tour through the Belfast Historical Society, or join the intimate, delightful Belfast Garden Club tours offered at area homes throughout the summer. If you want to get a little more rustic, and burn some calories, the Belfast area is chockfull of hiking trails that are literally off the beaten path. Even at the height of the tourist season there are no crowds on the

36 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2012

acres of pristine forest trails maintained by the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition, the Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the Sheepscot Wellspring Alliance and others. All provide trail maps online and in brochures. A few trails to try in the region are the Homestead Trail on Sears Island in Searsport, the Little River Community Trail in Belfast, Mount Waldo in Frankfort, the Newman Preserve in Northport, and the Bog Brook Trail in Montville, which is known as an excellent birding excursion.

Cycling Through the Seasons Some of us prefer to view nature as we ride past on two wheels, and for bikers, too, this region makes a great headquarters. The American Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine finishes its 180 mile annual ride in downtown Belfast, and the town is also home to the Belfast Bicycle Club. The Club takes weekly group rides, and the Belfast Bicycles shop offers repairs, gear, advice and the locally-made “Belfast Naturally” map, full of “Closeto-Town Routes” plus ones that take you fifty miles inland, to the edge of Waldo

County and back. The mix of pavement and dirt on quiet country roads makes for great road rides. Bike Club member Eric Olds’ favorite long-lunch ride is the “131 Loop” following Back Belmont Road clockwise out of town and joining up with the “River Loop” over the footbridge back home, about 20 miles total. Eric says, “Getting the view of Belfast out at the mouth of the river is always a great way to finish a ride.” For more outdoor activity ideas and resources, visit: belfastmaine.org

Going on a Treasure Hunt: Geocaching in the Belfast Bay Region Feel a little out of touch because you haven’t tried geocaching? Don’t worry, you’re not alone: geocaching has been around for only a decade. It’s a truly 21st century outdoor game, developed when digital Global Positioning Systems (GPS) first became widely available to the public. To try caching, as it’s called, first consult geocaching.com, an international directory of coordinates for real-life treasure hunters (you have to join, but it’s free). The site is searchable by zip code, and caches are named and briefly described, with information about parking, terrain and other useful tips. Once you’ve chosen a cache to track, enter its coordinates into your GPS and set off to search for concealed family-friendly surprises— baseball cards, pens, tiny toys—carefully hidden in public places by other enthusiasts. Exchange some trinkets for others, or leave the booty in place. Once back home, log your discoveries online for others to read. Geocaching is catching on fast in the Belfast area; a search within the 04915 zip code in late 2011 brought up over 6,000 caches in the region. Maine maintains its own organization for the sport, geocachingmaine.org, for those who want to try “the way caching should be!”

Let It Snow

Photo: James Mehorter The Muck, Belfast

38 Belfast The Bay and Beyond 2012

Midcoast Mainers make peace with the long visit from Jack Frost by piling the skates, skis, snowboards, snowshoes and sleds into the pick-up or car and heading out of the house for some fun. You can sled down “Chicken Hill,” overlooking Belfast Harbor, or at the Northport Golf Course; make circle eights on the new outdoor skating rink at Waterfall Arts in town or at “The Muck” pond by Hannaford Supermarket; and cross-country ski and snowshoe at Moose Point in Searsport or the Tanglewood Learning Center in Lincolnville. If soaring downhill is your passion, ski or snowboard on one of twenty trails

at Hermon Mountain near Bangor; or try any number of activities—including skiing, tubing, and tobogganing—at the Camden Snow Bowl. In Maine, we pride ourselves on finding ways to connect with the natural world no matter what the thermometer reads. So whatever the season, grab your canteen or Thermos and your trail mix and get outdoors. Remember to do your own part to conserve our natural beauty by heeding the adage, “Take only memories, leave only footprints.” Let’s keep our great outdoors in Belfast looking this gorgeous for generations to come.

athenahealth is proud to be a member of the Belfast business community. Low investment, web-based software. Our software is web-based, so there is no expensive hardware or software to install or maintain. Real-time database of payer rules, government incentives, and clinical protocols. Practices are always up to date with the latest clinical and billing requirements, and government regulations with our proprietary rules database, so they get paid for every dollar they are owed. Proven, intelligent back-office services. We take on a medical practice’s most time-consuming work. Faxes, billing and clinical paperwork get sent to us, and we scan, prioritize and post it. We track and manage claims and denials. Lab orders are managed electronically and yes, patient encounters can be documented the way a physician wants by pen, PC, or dictation. Find out more about our integrated physician billing, practice management and EHR service — and how it’s helping practices earn more revenue, work more efficiently and deliver better care.
