LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Reinvention issue
“Your power to choose your direction of your life allows you to reinvent yourself, to change your future, and to powerfully influence the rest of creation.” —Stephen Covey Reinvention. Pivot. Transform. Whether we wanted to or not, 2020 has forced us to make changes in our lives. As I pointed out last year, there’s an untruth about reinvention: that it’s about tossing out the “old” and exchanging it for something completely new. The power of reinvention, as we’ve learned, is that it’s in leveraging everything we’ve ever done—the successes and failures, the good, the bad, and the ugly. For many of us, reinvention is not practical. On a very basic level, it’s daunting. Reinventing yourself however, actually thrives on the very real skills, insights, and expertise we have gained along the way. What is something new you’ve learned about yourself this past year? Our team shares their new skills on pages 46-47.
We’ve set out with a new goal in 2021: dual cover stories. Both Mary Mouser + Jaime Xie collectively represent this vision—fresh faces, resiliency + beauty. Read more about their amazing stories on pages 60-64 and 66-71. We also get to know Rebecca Crews, who shares with us her inspiring journey of resiliency on pages 72-75. Could you have ever imagined PPE as art? Our fashion spread on pages 18-25 will be sure to sway your perspective. I believe the pandemic has afforded us all at least that much—new ways to see literally everything we come in contact with. As always, my team and I have poured our hearts into these pages. The stories, the resources—they are all meant as motivation for you to live your most beautiful life. And although we are on uncharted waters still, here’s to creating the best possible outcomes for each of us in our personal + collective pursuit of joy. With much love as always,
Vanessa Coppes

the back cover QUEEN by Jessica Licciardello At the beginning of 2020, I received a DCA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, for an exhibition I proposed entitled “8 Minutes to Freedom.” This was conceived as a way for me to visually tell a story of my journey of healing after escaping domestic abuse through my artwork. The title comes from the moment I escaped, in which there were 8 minutes left on the clothes dryer cycle when I was doing laundry. I had to make that life-changing decision before the 8 minutes was up—I took my clothes and left. At that moment, the healing process was just beginning. The image, QUEEN, is one of the last pieces of the sequence. My vision was to create an image of a woman that embodies female energy and self-worth and serves an inspiration for all women to step into their true power. This image is something I wish to be a beacon of light for anyone who sees it, but also a testament to the healing process when we make decisions that are difficult but life-saving. My hope is that every woman can see a part of themselves in this painting, and that it acts as a mirror for her triumph.
You can learn more about the exhibit and purchase a print of QUEEN at 8MinutesToFreedom.com.

Make this year your time to shine! Celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta shares his seven steps to achieving a major glowy look. (And yes, you can dew it!) A light, medium coverage foundation is the secret to gettingBASE a glowy
1
SKIN PREP
Make sure you take time to really moisturize and hydrate your skin before applying makeup. This will guarantee a healthy and flawless finished look. I love using La Mer’s Renewal Oil and La Mer’s Moisturizing Soft Cream.
look. If you’re dry, choose a hydrating primer to give you that extra bit of nourishment for the skin. I love La Mer’s Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation. If you’re oily, you can still use a hydrating foundation, but to keep skin from looking too dewy, apply a setting powder in super oily areas like the center of the forehead, the chin and the cheeks.
PRO TIP: Use a fluffy powder brush so you don’t apply too much powder and make the skin too matte.
PRO TIP: Let the skin absorb your product for at least 10 minutes before applying any other products to create the perfect canvas for your glowy look.
3 5
EYES
I love a glossy, glowy eye look—it’s very editorial and easy to create. I love a bronzy, shimmery brown eye shadow—there are so many available for a variety of skin tones. A favorite of mine is Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Color in copper. It’s super easy to use and is buildable depending on your personal preference. For next-level glow, I love adding the smallest amount of Face Gloss by Patrick Ta Beauty. It’s a universal product that can be placed on the eyes, cheeks, and lips and will give a gorgeous, luminous glow that is wet looking, but not sticky or tacky.
6
4
BLUSH
For glowy skin that isn’t one-dimensional, I love using a cream blush to bring not only color to the skin, but another layer of glow. I created Patrick Ta Beauty DoubleTake Creme and Powder Blush for this very purpose. I like to apply the powder first and then the creme to enhance the color and give skin a luminous finish.
LIPS
HIGHLIGHT
My top tip for applying highlight correctly is to apply it along the top of the cheekbones, peak of your nose, peak of forehead, and cupid’s bow. Those are the best areas to place the product because that’s where sunlight would naturally hit the skin and make it shine naturally—and that’s the ideal glowing skin look we’re after. Never apply highlighter all over your face, because you will look like a disco ball—especially in photos.
If I’m focusing on glowing skin, I like to do more of a matte lip, using a suede or velvet-textured lipstick. I love to tie the look together with a similar lip shade, like the Patrick Ta Beauty Monochrome Silky Lip Créme. It’s matte but feels so creamy and moisturizing on the lips.
PRO TIP: I put products like highlighter on the back of my hand first,

so I can make sure it is nice and even. It also ensures you don’t overdo it, because you can tap out a little bit and always add more. Then, I take a clean, damp makeup sponge and go over where I just placed the highlight to really push the product into the skin and blend everything together. Also, if you’ve applied too much highlighter, you can use the clean side of the sponge and dab off the excess product. And remember, there’s a huge difference between looking oily and dewy—you only want to look dewy The areas that can make you look oily are your smile lines, chin, and the center of your forehead. Don’t use any highlighter on those areas, opt instead for a translucent powder.
7
If you’re going for a glowy look on the face, you can’t have a dull body. I love adding highlight and glossiness to the skin to really make it pop and exude healthy skin. You can use any kind of illuminating body product; my favorite is Patrick Ta Major Glow Body Oil. It’s full of vitamin C, olive oil, and squalane to give skin a youthful appearance and all-day hydration and moisture.
Makeup artist Patrick Ta has an uncompromising devotion to all things beauty. His list of clients includes Bella and Gigi Hadid, Ariana Grande, and Kim and Kourtney Kardashian. Patrick believes that every person deserves to feel beautiful every day. He created his eponymous line, Patrick Ta Beauty, to help others find their inner confidence and show it to the world.

TANISSA
Carmon
Houston, TX UNTOURAGE THE LABEL LLC OWNER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR UntourageTheLabel.com
MY BUSINESS: Untourage The Label is the
denim brand I recently launched to appeal to hip Generation X and millenial women looking for an edgier style of jeans. I not only own the brand, but also serve as its creative director as I design the line myself. In addition to operating my own businesses, I also serve as chief operating officer of my two sons’ (Branden & Bryce Thompson) multi-million dollar enterprise, Thompson & Thompson LLC. I oversee a team of professionals hired to manage the day-today operations of our offices in Houston and Los Angeles. IN THE BEGINNING: I began my career
as a hairstylist and opened my first business, “Untourage Salon Retreat,” 20 years ago. Many years later, after much thought and consideration, I decided to start “Untourage The Label” after experiencing frustration in not finding denim that suited my particular style. After spending nearly two decades making women feel beautiful through hairstyling, I slowly ventured into fashion and began experimenting with design—which I feel was always my calling! Now I’m creating on a different type of canvas with designs that not only embellishes a woman’s style but reflects her taste. Photography by Sean Coleman
MOST REWARDING:
I love witnessing a client’s reaction after receiving just a simple haircut and I understand the impact it has not only on a women’s self worth, but on the image she presents to the world. I’m very focused on details in everything I do and my reward comes when seeing the results of my labor bring pleasure to others. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I’ve always
believed that if I dream it, I can achieve it, and even though it may seem out of reach at times, I don’t stop and keep going no matter what! 39

Centerport, NY SUFFOLK COUNTY HOUSE BUYERS - CEO SuffolkCountyHouseBuyers.com MY BUSINESS: We buy, renovate, and resell homes all
around Long Island (mostly Suffolk County). We are extremely passionate about revitalizing neighborhoods one house at a time. We also provide cash offers to homeowners in need of a fast and convenient closing on their terms. IN THE BEGINNING: I was an attorney working for a labor
union when I realized I would never have the upward mobility I always desired. I grew up in construction and have always had an entrepreneurial spirit coupled with a desire to invest in real estate so I knew this was the right path for me. Above all, I wanted to show my children you can live life on your own terms and do the things you have always dreamed of versus being stuck in an environment that does nothing for your growth. MOST REWARDING: Creating opportunities for others
while also creating the life for myself that I always wanted. Also watching houses make these massive transformations in a matter of weeks never gets old. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I never get greedy. I look
to give to those who believe in me, whether it is my staff, my contractors, investors, or people I buy from or sell to. In the end I am focused more on building relationships than I am about the bottom dollar.

DOREEN
Laskiewicz Jackson, NJ DOREEN LASKIEWICZ PHOTOGRAPHY LLC OWNER DoreenPhotography.com
MY BUSINESS: My company focuses on
people. I also restore old photographs and help families retain memories for future generations. One of the things I use to set myself apart in an oversaturated market is the ability to combine my photography with graphic elements. This is especially popular with the young athletes and dancers who I photograph. I also enjoy nature photography, which I have loved seeing in the recent issues of BELLA Magazine. IN THE BEGINNING: As a life in
the arts (I’m a graduate of Westminster Choir College and a music teacher for three decades), this has been another way to express myself. It evolved naturally from wanting to take better pictures of my kids when they were little. I was hungry to learn how to produce the types of images I would see professionals create, so I took every opportunity to learn, practice, and be critiqued by professionals.
MOST REWARDING:
The most rewarding aspect of my business is knowing that what I create will be there for generations to come as a reminder of the people in their lives who love them. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: The secret
to my success is my continuous drive to learn the technical aspects of photography and graphic design. It’s the technical mastery of your craft that allows you to reach your artistic potential. 41

Leading makeup teams for some of the top Fashion Weeks in the world, including New York, Moscow, and Paris, I have also worked with leading celebrities, photographers, and fashion designers. IN THE BEGINNING: Born in El Salvador as a diplomat’s

Despite a privileged childhood, I arrived in the US with next to nothing and experienced many hardships. Soon, however, my passion for beauty and fashion lead me down a successful career path, becoming a self-made expert. Nacionales
Staten Island, NY NACIONALES NAILS - CEO NacionalesNails.com TheLatinaNailPolishLady.com
MY BUSINESS: Nacionales Nails is a private label nail polish company. I run
the day-to-day operations, including maintaining our website, fulfilling orders, meeting regularly with our manufacturer, photographing and editing, managing social media, and everything else that goes along with sustaining a new business. IN THE BEGINNING: Back in 1999, one of my sisters and I launched
the company after noticing there were none specifically targeting the Latina community. For many reasons, including working full-time jobs and raising children, we decided to close down our company after a few years. The timing was just not right. In September 2018, after retiring from my teaching position with the New York City Department of Education, my husband and I decided to give the idea another go. Fortunately, our manufacturer, who had always been super supportive, welcomed us back with open arms and with the same enthusiasm as years before. MOST REWARDING: The most rewarding aspect is the number of
connections made with customers and other business owners excited about our nail polish and our “Polish the World” focus. I have also met such an impressive number of female business owners out there hustling and doing amazing things. I am so proud to be part of a community that is excited for us and what we do and is willing to share and engage so that we all can do better and be better.
SECRET TO MY SUCCESS:
Celebrating the diversity of our country through something as simple as nail polish has really touched Latinas and our non-Latina sisters in ways I never imagined. Whether it’s the beautiful array of colors we offer or the Spanish names of the polishes themselves, it connects us as humans.

New York, NY GLOW GLOBAL EVENTS FOUNDER AND CEO GlowGlobalEvents.com
MY BUSINESS: I’m the founder and CEO of Glow Global Events, an
award-winning full-service event management agency based in New York. My team and I manage more than $20 million in event budgets each year, and we strive to not only help companies achieve their business goals but also ensure their events have true, long-lasting impact. We work with amazing non-profits, including United Way of New York City and the Africa-America Institute, as well as foundations investing in emerging markets like the Omidyar Foundation, innovative corporations like LabCorp, and entertainment powerhouse A+E Network, to name a few. We were thrilled to be ranked No. 145 on the Inc. 5000 2020 list of the nation’s fastestgrowing privately-held companies in America, with a three-year impressive revenue growth of 2585.56% percent. IN THE BEGINNING: At the beginning of my career, I worked for
Marriott Hotels Corporation, and a large part of my job included planning corporate events, parties, and seminars. I went on to work in the music business at Arista Records and the fashion industry for IC Isaacs, the licensee for labels like Hugo Boss and Girbaud. Both music and fashion are really event-driven. I gained even more exposure on what it took to produce great events, and I took note of how those events affected the attendees. I realized then that I was more passionate about event planning than any of my other duties, and I branched out on my own. I founded Glow Global Events in 1998, and fast-forward to present day...we’ve been in business for more than 20 years and we’re still growing. MOST REWARDING: I believe that there is
no better way to influence how people think, act, or feel than through an event. So, of course, I’m proud every time an event runs smoothly and a client is pleased, but what really excites me is impact. Did we do something more than just pull people together in a room or on a virtual platform? I get really excited about connecting people from different countries, raising money for underserved communities, and increasing awareness about important causes. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: More than
anything, I’d say my fearlessness has driven my success. Outside of work, I’ve skydived at 10,000 feet, summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, walked with lions, and gone gorilla trekking in Uganda. I’ve applied that same sense of adventure and risk-taking to my business. For example, though the pandemic presented a lot of unexpected challenges, Glow pivoted to virtual events and we’ve seen the business grow at a time when a lot of companies are struggling. We weren’t afraid to try something new, and it worked in our favor. That has always been my approach.

REINVENTION SKILLS What is something new you’ve developed or discovered recently?
VANESSA COPPES
CEO + EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
What a year of revelation 2020 was! As a business owner, this year has tested me beyond expectations; it even brought me to my knees on several occasions. The interesting part, however, has been that even in the darkest days, I have always saw the light. The most important lesson for me has been to fully let go + let God. I used to kinda live this way pre-pandemic. Living the way we have been living since March has cemented my belief in truly + fully living in a space of allowance. We may have believed we were, but we are not in control of anything. Life has served up so much uncertainty that learning to dance in this flow has been the gift—and I think I’m an OK dancer! Grateful for it all + looking to 2021 full of hope + resilience.
JANENE MASCARELLA BEAUTY DIRECTOR
We took this photo at Bagatelle NYC last year, just a few weeks before we heard the word coronavirus for the first time. I had no idea that in the following months, I would come to miss my beautiful friends so dearly. What I have learned during this pandemic is how much I cherish spending time with them. After we posed for this picture and ate a delicious and posh brunch, in true Bagatelle fashion, the lights went down, we kicked off our heels and danced on the tables, ordered bottles of Dom Perignon and partied like it was 1999 at 2 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. (We had no idea it kind of was!) Now, it’s more important than ever for me to always make time for my girlfriends, to show up, check in, and make a point to be present in their lives. What I have learned from this global pandemic is that my girlfriends truly mean the world to me! JESSICA LICCIARDELLO CREATIVE DIRECTOR
At the beginning of the quarantine, I started taking more walks in the local nature reserves and reconnected with my love of nature. I enjoyed taking things a bit slower. After a few weeks of walking I was noticing the wildlife more and more, especially the birds. I began taking my camera with me and photographing the wildlife I encountered.
46
This turned into a full-fledged hobby, in which I was able to connect with a local group of nature lovers and identify the birds I was photographing. It’s been a reminder that there is more to this world than what we have built, more than our everyday problems. There is an entire world of natural beauty, and life exists right in front of us. Now I have a lovely collection of photos that not only remind me of this time, but have also given me a new appreciation for where I live.
JENNIFER DECILLIS PUBLISHER
In true reinvention fashion, 2020 was a year of reviving our appreciation for the things we have, renovating our mindset, and redefining what is truly important to us. I personally began to recognize the overindulgences of my daily life and gained a newfound sense of gratitude for the basics—the things we sometimes lose touch with, like health and family. I think our time in quarantine forced us to scale back in so many ways—like splurging on spa days or lavish dinners—and ultimately, for me, sparked a desire to change. From making small modifications, like refining the at-home manicure instead of a biweekly trip to the nail salon, to my dedicated pandemic project of self-taught cooking sessions in lieu of delivery apps and expensive restaurants, I began to realize how many luxuries I wanted to live without. The occasional takeout order is inevitable, and dinner with the girls is sometimes a necessary form of self-care, but teaching myself how to cook truly became therapeutic, not to mention economical. (Plus, hello—it’s a skill I probably should have sharpened by now!) It may seem like a small adjustment, but cooking has become a craft I love experimenting with and one I will use long after the woes of lockdown life have subsided. GINA LAGUARDIA EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
Over the past few months, thanks in large part to the pandemic, I’ve learned the true meaning and power of adaptability. Truly, humans can essentially endure whatever comes our way — we pivot, adjust, accept, and adapt. I’ve always been an easygoing person; I avoid conflict and “go with the flow.” While I’ve tried to be more firm in my approach as I’ve gotten older, I think my spirit of compromise has been an asset to me during these difficult months. I’ve tried to show appreciation and love in greater quantity to my family and friends, since we weren’t able to get together in person for so long. It’s shown me that I can go long periods without the “luxuries” I’ve spoiled myself with like eyelash extensions, hair dye, and manicures. I’ve been able to adapt my exercise routine to the elements of nature, working out in both cold and hot weather. In my opinion, part of adapting is understanding the true value of every action, experience, and individual, and doing whatever it takes to hold tight to those things even if the experience itself looks and feels different than before.
MINDY GURA AND PAULA ORLAN FASHION STYLISTS
The year 2020 will certainly be remembered as a time of pausing, learning, reflecting, and discovering. While we have been able to keep ourselves busy with our styling business in a more remote way, we have also found some needed downtime to discover new hobbies that have brought us so much joy. We often forget to relish in the simple things like cooking, reading, or playing board games. Quarantine has encouraged us to start enjoying activities like these. One hobby, in particular, was Mahjong. Since we can play this fun and challenging game online, it is a safe way to stay socially connected to friends. We can play by ourselves, with each other, or with others. We grab a glass of our favorite wine and get caught up in Bam, Cracks, and Dots. If you haven’t tried it already, we urge you to take up this new hobby as well. You will become obsessed like we are! VIVIAN NACIONALES BELLA TV PRODUCER
Being at home with my husband (who is teaching from home) and for a good while, my two adult daughters as we waited for the city to reopen, I began to reflect on all of our years together as a family, and how important it is not to take each other for granted. I also decided this would be a good time to perfect some recipes (arroz con gandules, sofrito, adobo) and to try some new recipes from the “Wheat Belly Diet Cookbook,” specifically, the chocolate chip cookies. Also, my husband, Peter, and I recently purchased a new camera and updated other video equipment to move closer to a plan we had to produce our own shows. We are now up and running. I am the Latina half of “A Jewish Mother and a Latina,” Peter is our cameraman, and my friend, a newly retired teacher, Tracy, is the Jewish mother. Looking forward to some fun times! LYNETTE BARBIERI
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE
The COVID pandemic has undoubtedly impacted all of us in many ways, both negative and positive. Some of my more pleasant memories, for example, include cutting firewood with a chainsaw, refurbishing some old furniture, trying new recipes, and planting a vegetable garden. Spending six weeks with my granddaughters was—of course—the highlight.
JONATHAN CALIXTO
FASHION AND LIFESTYLE EDITOR
I love this question because since the start of the pandemic with “BELLA Make it Work,” a BELLA TV segment I host, I have been asking guests weekly, “What have you learned during this time that you will bring with you into this new normal?” Now, answering that for myself, I can see why they had to take a minute, or got emotional reflecting on the past few months. The biggest lesson I have learned during this time is the power of giving back. When I was watching how the rates of homelessness in the U.S. were rising due to the pandemic, I immediately turned to my family about an idea to assist our homeless elderly and LGBTQ+ youth community. Without hesitation they jumped to help, and with their support we got out close to 200 bags that provided food and hygienic essentials for homeless people. This picture is a representation of how inspired I am by them and their willingness to provide for others despite whatever obstacles they were facing because of the times we are living in. With this lesson, it reinforces the idea of leading with kindness and paying it forward. Every small act of kindness can mean a great deal for someone else.
I used the extra time to learn new things by researching, reading, and attending virtual workshops and conferences. I also learned how adaptable I am capable of being. I discovered that I can work pretty much anywhere under any circumstances and teach myself anything that I am interested in if I'm determined. But the number one thing I have taken from all this uncertainty is what it means to be grateful—grateful for my family, grateful for my health, and grateful for time. Before the pandemic, I spent so much energy running around in fear of missing out that I forgot to pause and enjoy it all. Being forced to slow down made me realize that it's OK to not be everywhere at once and not be everything for everybody. I understand now how important it is to prioritize self-care in order to properly care for the people I love. It's been a tough year for all of us, but the one quote that keeps popping into mind is this: “A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong it is until it's in hot water.” I'm grateful for realizing my strength, as well as the importance of rest. I'm proud of who I am and the relationships I’ve built. I know how lucky I am for the valuable time I’ve been able to spend with my family. Hard times push us to challenge ourselves, build resilience, and grow. These times pass, but the lessons we take from them define how we choose to live the rest of our lives. This may not have been the year we expected, but it might have been the year we needed to remember just how much we have to be thankful for. 47

The participants, all amassed into a community Facebook group, shared their progress and encouraged one another, alongside Holly, who checked in weekly with live updates and answers to pertinent questions. Aside from design expert advice and a feature in BELLA Magazine, the final winner(s) of the Laid Out In Luxury Challenge were also gifted luxury bedding from Eastern Accents. These lavish bedding sets are not only beautiful (beaucoup bucks worth of beautiful!), they are also highquality, customizable, and available in virtually any color or pattern to perfectly accent your aesthetic with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. In the spirit of giving, and as an added bonus in participating in our first ever interior design challenge, Holly even decided to gift two winners with their choice in Eastern Accents bedding sets. All of the participants worked diligently in designing their spaces, sharing ideas, and investing in this project—but two women were truly dedicated to mastering the art of interior design. One of the winners, Danielle Woolley, says of her experience, “our bedroom is our favorite room in the house and I always thought it was missing something but couldn’t quite figure out what. Through this challenge, I discovered we didn’t need to add much, and actually wound up removing some things and making some minor changes to make us love the room even more and feel more relaxed when it is time to go to bed. I loved the feedback, inspiration, and guidance of the group and the way everything was broken down into small weekly challenges. The weeks flew by! I am using what I learned and taking the inspiration into other rooms in my house, so thank you!” Fellow challenge winner, Nicole Abbott-Peretz, shared that the Laid Out in Luxury Challenge was incredibly motivating and fun. “It was great to have a timeline for the redesign process, and Holly provided many great design suggestions for the room. I especially enjoyed seeing what others were doing with their spaces!” The Eastern Accents bedding sets that Danielle and Nicole chose, along with many other Eastern Accents pieces and sets, can be found in Holly’s very own boutique, The Shop. The Shop by Holly is a destination boutique for home decor, accessories, gifts and more. The Shop features a vibrant hub of color, pattern, and texture, so you can explore the possibilities of interior design and bring your vision to life. Holly is diligent about keeping selections and products fresh, new, and well styled. hirty-six years ago one of the most beloved movies of all times made its mark on audiences everywhere. Now, years later, the magic of “The Karate Kid” films continues with the drama series, "Cobra Kai,” and a new era of fans are falling in love all over again. Actress Mary Mouser, known for her work on TV shows such as “Body of Proof,” “Scandal,” and “CSI,” portrays Samantha, the daughter of Daniel LaRusso (played by Ralph Macchio). In a twist of fate, Samantha is now reliving her dad’s rivalry with the Cobra Kai dojo. Despite the fact that Mary, an Arkansas native, is kicking ass on screen, once the cameras stop rolling, she and her fellow “Cobra Kai” actors truly enjoy spending time with one another. “Over the last couple of years, we really developed an intense friendship having all these fight scenes with each other,” Mary explains. “We are a very tight-knit group; for me, this has been the show of a lifetime.” Making the transition from child star to adult actress, Mary has built an impressive resume along the way. In addition to her career on-screen, she’s also pursuing a college degree in deaf culture and American Sign Language. She describes herself as someone who likes having things planned out, but admits once acting took center stage she had to readjust the expectations she placed on herself. “I’m on the slow track, which has been an adjustment, but I’m pursuing college because I enjoy it, and at this point I have something I really want to learn about,” says Mary. Dedicated to the things she’s passionate about, the talented actress gave us an exclusive look into the world of “Cobra Kai” (the third season was just released on January 1st on Netflix!), as well as revealed what life has been like living with Type 1 diabetes and how she’s using her platform to raise and spread awareness.
62
When you auditioned for “Cobra Kai,” you had never watched any of “The Karate Kid” films. What did you think once you did?
I think waiting was cool because when I did watch them, not only was I seeing this childhood and lifelong favorite of so many people—my boyfriend especially—I was seeing this film everyone loves and was also getting to see it through a different lens. The whole time my boyfriend was like, 'That’s your dad now, that’s your family,' and I was thinking to myself, ‘Yeah, this is the idea of watching family movies. These are like her family stories, and I became completely obsessed. I love when I come home from a day on set filming in, say, the replication of Miyagi’s house, and then sit down and watch the scene where Daniel’s blowing out his candles in Miyagi’s house. I totally get why the mania for it has lasted so long and now count myself as a fan girl. I joined the party late, but I’m a strong supporter.
What is it about “Cobra Kai” that has fans hooked?
Once I sat down and watched the movies, there was such magic and a very real but un-realness to it that made me feel anything was possible. I think the writers and creators have done such a great job bringing that to this show for the new audience era. My favorite aspect about the show is how there are so many different perspectives. There are different characters and stories, so you can be watching the same show and have a completely opposite opinion of who the ultimate villain is, who the real good guy is, and why you identify with Hawk, or Moon, or whoever it is. That’s something I look for in a show—caring about the characters like they’re real people. The creators and my co-workers/cast do a great job of creating individual people you want to root for even when you don’t know why you want to root for them.
What do you love about “Cobra Kai”?
I think it’s cool how the changing of times has allowed for female karate kids to step in. Getting to bring that to this generation has been fun and also a challenge because I was someone who had never worked out before. Now, taking on the role of being the Karate Kid’s daughter, expected to know what eight years of karate looks like, I take a lot of pride in that.
How would you describe Samantha?
For some people she is the villain and that’s kind of cool because I’ve never been the villain before, but I don’t see it that way. I see Samantha as somebody who, like the rest of us, doesn’t know what the end of the path looks like but she’s struggling to get to that thing, whether it's romantically, in her relationship with her dad, or her relationship with karate.
“Cobra Kai” differs from “The Karate Kid” films but stays true to confronting important issues. What are some of your favorite life lessons the show has tackled? [One is] the moment on the beach with Samantha and Miguel, where he sees her with Robby and gets really jealous. He’s drunk and tries to push Robby, but Samantha steps in the way and basically gets clotheslined. When I read that, I got nervous and thought this sounded a bit like an after-school [special], like are we going to talk about this for real—being hit by a guy? They made it very clear it was a completely wrong place-wrong time sort of situation, but it was still important to me to be honest on how that would make me feel.

Outside of my own character, I really love the arc of Hawk. It’s an important story that this show does such a great job of telling. It’s not just about bullying or what that looks like, but understanding how somebody becomes a bully. If we can understand the makings of one, we can hopefully un-make the bully and progress in the other direction.
involves both adrenaline, which makes my blood sugar go up, and exertion of my energy, which makes it go down, so there’s been a lot of juggling. The best thing I’ve learned is there is no such thing as a bad day. I take my health and my diabetes very serious; I want to have it work with me and for me. It’s my top priority because I can’t do my job if I’m not in a good physical state.
Season two ended with a dangerous brawl. What are the ramifications for these characters going into season three?
The funniest aspect of figuring out diabetes and acting is when I’m wearing my insulin pump and figuring out how to hide it—that’s always a fun game. Where are we going to creatively put this so I can still do whatever physical activity I need to do? I have such great relationships with our crew that if I feel myself going low or high, I can look across the way and find one of our amazing production assistants or assistant directors and ask someone to bring my backpack and they know what that means.
Every single person is hanging in their own balance—or lack of balance. There’s physical recovery for a lot of the characters, even Samantha didn’t come out of the fight unscathed. It was a big brawl, and in terms of Samantha—as a girl in a big fight—that has a different connotation to it than if she was a boy. There’s levels of confusion internally, pain, pride, and all of these different things that the characters are left trying to cope with and to find a new path forward. [There will be] a whole lot of recovery in all sorts of ways and so many cool aspects that everybody will get to tap in to. I think there is something for everybody, and through the healing process you’ll probably find who your person is.
What message do you want to share with other young people living with Type 1 diabetes?
The most up-in-the-air thing for me when I was diagnosed was, 'What now?' So I definitely want to say there are so many people who are successful in their fields and have wonderful, full, long, and happy lives and also have Type 1 diabetes; it’s just another aspect of their personality.
Many fans might not know that you’ve been living with Type 1 diabetes for almost 12 years. How do you stay on top of your health, especially working long hours on set?
There are days when I just don’t want to have diabetes. Obviously, it doesn’t work that way; I still have it, and I still have to do all the things I’m supposed to, but I give myself a little mental vacation. Diabetes is not easy, but it’s doable and has taught me a lot about myself.
It seems like I should have it all figured out but the body is constantly aging and changing, and diabetes is constantly changing. I was diagnosed at 13 years old, which is a very different body composition than age 23 and 24, so it’s been a lot of learning.
From a professional standpoint, what does your future look like?

ard work and a determination to chase a dream run in Jaime Xie’s blood. A first-generation Asian-American, Jaime is pursuing a career that was unfamiliar to her parents. Although they envisioned a somewhat different path for their daughter, Jaime says they just want her to be happy and follow a career path she’s passionate about.
While it took some convincing, her parents’ support makes it possible for the fashion influencer and digital content creator to continue her pursuit of making a mark in the world of luxury, high-end fashion. “It was extremely challenging in the beginning to get my parents on board when it came to my fashion career as neither of them used social media and had no idea how Instagram worked,” explains Jaime. “Being Chinese, my mother and father grew up with the notion that hard work equals success.” One glance at this young entrepreneur’s Instagram page will leave any fashionista obsessing over an impressive wardrobe that needs no captions. Add in a love of shoes and handbags, especially the minis, and you can understand why she fell in love with fashion in the first place. Surprisingly, though, it was not her first choice for a career. Jaime is an accomplished equestrian, and as a young girl had dreams of competing in the Olympics. Her commitment to riding meant trading in the experiences kids her age got to have in order to travel the world and compete against some of the best equestrians. It’s an experience Jaime says she doesn’t regret. “Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” she says. These days, the former champion has traded in her riding apparel for a completely different look. And although she’s shifted her career goals, Jaime’s determination and competitive nature remain strong. BELLA sat down to chat with Jaime about her love of luxury fashion, her days of competitive horseback riding, her new show coming out on Netflix, and what she’s looking forward to in 2021.
68
As a former competitive equestrian you spent many years dedicated to the sport. What did you love most about it? I loved everything about it! The connection you share with your horse is so special. I loved the exhilaration from jumping and navigating my horse through a course. I’m very competitive by nature; I loved being challenged by my peers and vying for that number one spot.
What led to your decision to retire from the sport? When I decide to pursue something I fully commit and will do whatever it takes by dedicating all of my time and energy. As I got older, other things became a priority, and in order for me to be the best I could, I had to shift my focus and energy.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the time for competitive riding anymore as I’ve decided to dedicate my attention to my career in fashion. I still try to make time whenever I have a break from traveling, but it’s a demanding sport that requires time and dedication.
Do you still ride for fun?
Yes, whenever time allows. Horses and riding will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a big part of my life and something I truly enjoyed and cherished.
When did you fall in love with fashion?
I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember. I would play dress-up in my mother’s closet ever since I was a little girl. She believed I got my fashion sense from my grandfather as he was a very successful men’s suit designer in Taiwan. He’s also the only person in my family who loved fashion as much as I do. It’s a shame I only got to meet him through my mom’s recollections and stories.
Your Instagram showcases a myriad of looks. Do you have a specific style, or are you more of a chameleon when it comes to fashion?
I am definitely more of a chameleon—I truly wear everything and anything that makes me feel good. I can be feminine and flirty one day and dark and edgy the next. It really depends on my mood that day.

I promote it to my audience? People can tell if someone is promoting a product just for money, or if it truly aligns with who they are as an individual. Authenticity is something consumers look for these days, and it is extremely important to me so I stand by that in all I do.
Being a part of the fashion world includes attending amazing shows, but in the beginning you had to get creative in order to secure invites. Do you think persistence, along with creativity, are what opened those doors for you?
Because of my father’s success [her father is cybersecurity expert Ken Xie, who has built three cybersecurity companies], people automatically assume that things come easy for me, but I still have to hustle and put in the time and effort like everybody else. While he may be well-known and successful in the tech world, the fashion industry has no idea who my father is. Thus, I have to work hard to prove myself without using my family name and start from square one like everybody else. Persistence is what opened the door, but what cemented my place in the fashion world is my creativity and authenticity.
Which brands have you worked with, and what part of the collaboration process do you most enjoy?
I’ve worked with Valentino, Tiffany & Co., Piaget, Net-a-Porter, Farfetch, Luisaviaroma, Sephora, and Jimmy Choo, to name a few. Brand trips and experiences are my favorite ways to collaborate because I get to experience new cultures and meet different people that I otherwise wouldn’t.
You have a new show coming out this month on Netflix. Can you tell us about it? “Bling Empire” is an unscripted show with an allAsian cast. Cameras follow the lives of myself and other cast members as we navigate life in Los Angeles.
Would you say competing at a young age contributed to your strong work ethic?
To date, what has been your biggest career highlight?
Growing up, I spent a lot of time surrounded by people who were older and wiser. Both of my parents are immigrants from Asia and they instilled in me the value of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. I think traveling and competing at a young age allowed me to mature faster than my peers, and it also helped me understand the amount of time and effort that goes into achieving my goals.
As an influencer, companies want you to promote their products. When it comes to promotions, what do you look for in a brand?
My biggest career highlight would probably be shooting Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam in Capri with Luisaviaroma.
In thinking career longterm, what are some of the entrepreneurial goals you’ve set for yourself ?
I think everyone is an influencer these days. Whether you are Bella Hadid, Jennifer Aniston, or Christian Rinaldo, anyone with the power to inspire and influence holds the responsibility to send a message. As a fashion entrepreneur, I am fortunate to have the audience and platform that I have, and I am grateful for everyone who supports me. Therefore, I only partner with brands I feel align with my own identity and story. If it’s not something I can see myself wearing or using, how can
Both of my parents are successful investors and business people, and I want to combine their strengths with my own. They have the ability to spot companies Top and shorts: Dennis Basso with potential from the get-go, such as what my father did in the early days of Zoom. I’m hoping to do the same thing with fashion companies. I also want to channel my creative energy into developing a sunglass line that will truly be mine.
As a new year begins, what are you most looking forward to?
I hope to continue working with my favorite brands, as well as continue developing my sunglass line. The one thing I miss the most is Europe and traveling in general. As soon as the global situation improves, you’ll be able to find me in Paris and the rest of my favorite cities.

REBECCA CREWS: Living her dream By Alexandra Anastasio 72
F
rom the time she was a little girl growing up in Gary, Indiana, singer-songwriter Rebecca Crews was destined to perform. Her late father was a musician, as is as her mother and stepfather, so it’s no wonder she wanted to follow in their footsteps.
“I was inundated with music in my home,” recalls Rebecca, “from Tom Jones and Steve Wonder, to Duke Ellington and all the jazz greats.” While studying musical theatre in college, Rebecca was on her way to fulfilling her dream, until some big life changes put that dream on pause. Toward the end of college, Rebecca gave birth to her daughter, and not long after met her husband, Terry. She admits, the day he walked into her church, life as she knew it changed forever. Fast-forward 31 years, and Rebecca, now a mom of four, is pursuing the dream that had always been calling her. Along the road there have been bumps—in early 2020 she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer—but thankfully, today, she is cancer-free. Rebecca sat down to talk to BELLA about her music, family, and how she got through one of the toughest experiences with the love and support of her husband and kids.
Music runs in your family, and early on you were exposed to some of the greats. Who are some of the musicians that inspired you? Some of my favorites were and still are Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Carly Simon, Carole King, Natalie Cole, Tina Marie, and Sade, who is my goddess.
Carole King was one of my early influences. Being a little bi-racial girl in Gary, Indiana, I had this big shock of curly, ash-brown hair, and I would play the piano and sing at the top of my lungs. My mother, who is African-American, would call me her ‘Little Carole.’ She has been a beacon for me since I was a little girl.
You put your dream on hold to help Terry chase his and to raise your children. When did you decide it was time to relaunch your own career?
I woke up the day before my 40th birthday, and it was as if there was an egg timer in my heart, and it went ding! I just had my fourth baby, bought equipment to build my studio, and I started writing and producing. I began auditioning, attending events with my husband, and going on the [red] carpet with him. I was putting my life together, and then the show, “Family Crews” came along, and it opened other doors for me. I was performing locally, but mostly I was pitching my songs as a writer. I became fed up with not getting placed and another artist, someone I respect and admire, encouraged me to sing my own songs. I didn’t regard myself as that much of a singer—I’d rather Mary J. Blige or Celine Dion sing the song—but they just said, ‘Rebecca, you need to go out there and do it,’ so I did.
With your music you go by the pseudonym, Regina Madre. What led to that decision? I found out that being the wife of an entertainer who was already established, there was a perception that, ‘Oh, she’s just trying something,’ so I thought. ‘What if they don’t know it’s me?’ I got the inspiration from the musical artist H.E.R. She was a child star who found it hard to transition, so I put out two songs under the name Regina Madre, which means “Queen Mother.” We approached a radio promoter, did a deal, and I got radio play. I thought, ‘What do you know, they don’t want to just talk about Terry and the family, they want to talk about the music.’ As more press came in it became harder to pretend I wasn’t Rebecca. While I’m not completely anonymous, I’m going to use the stage name because it’s a separate side of myself, apart from the other brands. My new album, which is my first, will be under the stage name. 73
getting to know
74
How would you describe your sound?
I call my music grown folks’ music, urban adult contemporary. I would compare it to artists like Alicia Keys—kind of R&B with a little singersongwriter vibe. There’s a soulful element to it.
Where do you derive inspiration when writing music?
I have a lot of inspiration because I’ve been through a lot of shit. I’ve had some rough times in life, and so a lot of what you’re hearing is the pain and brutality of life, whether it’s mine or others.
Two weeks later the country shut down, and that’s when I did my recovery. All I could think of was, ‘Thank God I harassed those doctors instead of waiting.’ That little knocking at my heart that kept telling me to go and check yourself…if I hadn’t done that then, I could have been waiting months. I got in right under the wire, and I am sensitive to the fact that many people had to postpone major surgeries because of this. I was happy to be home and have my husband take care of me.
What advice do you have for other women when it comes to early detection?
I’m definitely an advocate for early detection. I encourage women to both check themselves regularly and to avail themselves of support groups around them and obtain the knowledge they need. Really do your research. It is helpful to be forward thinking, knowledgeable, and be your own best advocate. The ultrasound saved my life.
My first song, “Destiny,” was about the summer I became pregnant with my daughter, and it completely changed my life. I felt like my past life was nothing compared to my present with my daughter. She awakened something in me I didn’t know was there, and I was phenomenally changed. My motherhood is the biggest thing I cherish, and I don’t know there is anything that can call me home and center me like one of my children calling me with a problem.
Are you involved with any particular organizations?
Stand Up to Cancer is a multi-faceted organization that funds research between groups that would normally compete against each other. They’re taking the competition out of the research so they can share information and find better treatments.
Early last year you were diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery before the country shut down. My timing couldn’t have been more perfect—it was the start of the new year, which is the time I always go and do my physical. I was having this inner urgency, waking up in the morning, thinking, ‘Go check your parts.’ When I went for my mammogram, I was also supposed to have an ultrasound because I have a history, but for some reason they didn’t have me scheduled for it. I insisted, and sure enough, the mammogram didn’t pick up the growth but the ultrasound did. The day after my son, Isaiah, found out he got the part on this Nickelodeon show, the doctor called with the diagnosis. I thought, ‘Thank God I have something positive to focus on.’ I harassed the doctors to schedule the surgery because my son was starting work the second week of March, and I had to be on set with him because he’s a minor. They booked me for March 3rd and after recuperating for six days, the following Monday I was taking my son to work.
While 2020 was a difficult year, what are you most grateful for? And, as we begin 2021, what are you most looking forward to?
I’m most grateful for being alive. I’m profoundly thankful for my husband’s love—he is my rock, he is my joy, and as much as he gets on my nerves, I would not do life without him or with anybody but him.
I’m most looking forward to my son’s new show, “Side Hustle.” That’s a new era for us—watching him do this thing. And I’m ecstatic about my new album, and seeing what happens with the singles we promote and other projects I’m working on in regard to e-commerce.

QUEER STORIES on the
SCREEN By Jonathan Calixto
In 2018, GLAAD, a gay and transgender media advocacy group, called for Hollywood to have 20% of annual film releases include an LGBT or genderfluid character by 2021. While the film industry had to navigate a pandemic through all of 2020, leading to shows and movie productions being canceled or premieres being postponed, one thing that has moved forward is the importance of diversity.
COMING UP IN 2021
Scene from "Love, Victor" courtesy of Hulu
Some of the upcoming titles to look out for are Marvel’s “The Eternals,” which will feature its first gay superhero, Phastos, a cosmic-powered inventor played by Brian Tyree Henry. Seeing how important superheroes have been to this generation, with movies like “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” proving that the notions Hollywood has had about women and people of color are not ideals held by global viewers, this is an exciting inclusion of queer culture into this space. “Benedetta,” based on the book, “Immodest Acts” by Judith Brown, tells the story of Benedetta
Carlini, a lesbian Catholic nun facing trouble because of her sexual orientation in the 17th century. This film has been long awaited since 2018 when the announcement of the film was first made by director and co-writer, Paul Verhoeven. While the film was originally set to premiere in 2020, it was rescheduled for release at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in May 2021. The film will feature French stars, such as Virginie Efira in the role of Benedetta, and is being considered for the highest awarded prize in the film festival, the Palme d’Or award. To our home screens, the second season of “Love, Victor,” a series spin-off from the movie, “Love, Simon,” depicts the life of a Latinx teenager navigating the dilemma of being at a new high school and exploring his sexual orientation. This series is set to come back this year to Hulu. While the future of film showings in theatres continue to be determined, we can rest assure that queer voices will be heard and seen in 2021.
NYC REVELS IN ITS HERALDED QUEER LEGACY NewFest is the largest presenter of LGBTQ+ film and media in New York. Founded in 1988, its mission is to give voice and visibility to the full scope of the LGBTQ+ experience, and even through the pandemic it has done just that.

The event featured ondemand movies that could be watched from anywhere in the country, and recorded introductions to films in front of historic LGBTQ+ sites. No matter where you were watching from, it still captured the energy of NYC and the queer legacy that exists there. “This year’s festival was really built for this unique moment and provided an opportunity for LGBTQ folks throughout the country to connect around queer stories and the issues that impact us,” says Executive Director David Hatkoff. “We also wanted to acknowledge and celebrate our community’s history, as well as shine a spotlight on queer gathering spaces, community organizations, and LGBTQ-owned business that have been impacted by the pandemic.” Despite other festivals having to cancel their events, NewFest doubled down and ended up attracting twice as many attendees as the previous year. As David adds, “Queer stories will not be silenced.” NewFest.org
MIAMI’S CELEBRATION OF FILM, FOOD, ARTS, AND MORE While major Hollywood box offices are getting with the times, local organizations have been embracing and celebrating queer films and filmmakers through their own festivals. Gay8 “Gay Ocho” Festival, now in its sixth year, is a
three-day weekend event hosted in Miami, Florida, by 4Ward Miami, a non-profit organization connecting many of South Florida’s diverse communities and providing inclusion for the LGBTQI community. The festival not only celebrates LGBTQ Hispanic/Latino/Latinx films but also music, art, food, and dance held in historic parts of town that are facing gentrification. Damian Pardo, the organization’s co-founder, explains: “We are creating an educational and inspirational avenue moving our South Florida community forward by accomplishing our goal to promote LGBTQI diversity and inclusivity, economic status and civil rights on a local, state-wide and international platform.” Gay8Festival.com

Future LIES AHEAD… By Meghan Rose
As we enter a new year filled with hope and wonder, the idea of a new “you” becomes glaringly present. Reinvention is something that takes courage, strength, and action—a true testament to the ever-evolving being that lives within all of us, waiting to be awakened. This year, 2021 starts off with a powerful shift in planetary alignments, welcoming us with Mars entering Taurus on January 6th, Venus entering Capricorn on January 8th, and a New Moon in Capricorn on January 13th. We are entering into a whole new world spiritually. Can you feel it coming?
ARIES
QUEEN OF WANDS: Expect the first two months of 2021 to be filled with opportunities to showcase your power and remind people what they’ve been missing out on while you were hibernating. There’s nothing but abundance waiting on the other side of you embracing your passion and purpose. Can you tap more deeply into your intuition as the new year begins? Spirit is requesting you to partake in money manifestation and intention-setting practices. Get really clear about what you want to use that fiery Aries energy on, and focus. This is the time to take action in the pursuit of bringing your dreams to life.
TAURUS
FOUR OF PENTACLES: Taurus, How have you been closing yourself off from the world lately? It seems like you’re in a bit of a slump, holding back from showing the world your full, vibrant self. Remember, when you avoid sharing your authentic self with others, it’s actually a form of greed. The world needs you to embrace growth and expansion–it feels like this is surrounding both your career and your love life. Whatever your career looks like now, expect it to change in the best ways once you start using your voice and sharing your opinions more freely. If you’re looking for work, try talking to more people about your search as you will find work through networking. In love, it’s time to embrace vulnerability. How are you holding yourself back from experiencing a real-life love story? Try letting go of the limiting belief that anything is “too good to be true” and watch how your life changes.
GEMINI
KNIGHT OF PENTACLES: Patience is a virtue, dear Gemini. Instead of constantly worrying yourself sick with the idea that you should be doing “more, bigger, better,” can you instead tap into what is presently here with love and gratitude? You are quick-witted, intelligent, and full of so much potential…but just like baking the perfect cake, it can’t be taken out early. Your guides are moving you as quickly as they can without causing a burnout (which is going to happen if you keep rushing the process). It’s time to take up a new hobby, or finish one of those half-read books on your nightstand to distract from the existential crisis you are creating for yourself. All in due timing, and what’s coming for you in January/February is better than you could have imagined. Trust the process.
CANCER
KNIGHT OF WANDS: A new adventure begins for you in 2021, Cancer! This year is starting off with the call of the wild. What (or who) have you had your eye on recently? January is when it all comes together and you begin to live more boldly. Been in a dating slump? Time to have a solo photoshoot and put yourself back out there on your favorite app. Tired of your current living situation? A new city may be the perfect remedy for you as the new year begins. Tap back into your inner child—what did he/ she want from life? No, this doesn’t mean you have to go back to school to become a vet or a lawyer. Instead, ask yourself: How can I make that “feeling” of success and happiness a reality in my life? Do that thing. 78
LEO
SAGITTARIUS
VIRGO
CAPRICORN
FOUR OF WANDS: Leo, it’s time for you to make (and sustain) divine connections in your life. You’re being called to live with more presentness and gratitude as 2021 begins. Is there anyone or anything that you’re currently taking for granted? Remember, connections to love, great friends, and idealistic working environments don’t come around very often. Is there anyone in your life that feels extra special lately? It might be time to roar from the mountaintops about this one, my Lion. This new year seems to be starting off with love coursing through your veins; romantic, platonic, familial or otherwise– be the example for how to show appreciation (even if it feels a little too vulnerable for your liking).
EIGHT OF SWORDS: Ah, my Mercury-ruled Virgos, are we surprised to see a card that represents overthinking and being trapped in the mind for you? You’re worrying yourself over the hypothetical, and just like all the “conversations you could have had,” let’s let go of the “conversations that may happen.” You’re being asked to get comfortable with discomfort; life is not meant to be easy, it’s meant to be enjoyed. I promise that the more you surrender to chaos and confusion, the easier this situation will be. Can you find happiness in the unknown?
LIBRA
SEVEN OF CUPS: There is a lot of opportunity cropping up in the early months of the new year, my lovely Libra. But for someone so indecisive, that may not feel like a good thing. Trust that when you tap into your inner voice, you can never make a “wrong” decision. For some of you, you’ve been entertaining multiple suitors, and it’s time to make a decision on who is healthy for you before they all decide to move forward. For those who are focusing on something other than love, this message could mean a big life-changing event is on the horizon. One that deals with aligning with your path, so if you’re unhappy with your job, living situation, or habits as of lately, jump on the ‘2021 New Year’s Resolution’ train. All aboard to happier horizons!
SCORPIO
SEVEN OF PENTACLES: Invest, invest, invest, Scorpio! You’ve been a little ungrounded in recent months, and Spirit is asking you to plant roots. Get comfortable with structure, stability, and longevity as you start off 2021. Are you moving into a new home? Committing to a love interest? Starting a family? Know that whatever decision you’re making is one from which you’ll reap the most rewards if you stick around and embrace dedication. For some of you this is a clear sign to get your finances in check; have you done research into the stock market, crypto currency, or any other avenues of passive income? Let your money start to work for you, rather than you working so hard for your money. You can expect the months ahead to be prosperous if you think smart and apply your research.
FIVE OF PENTACLES: I’m seeing a lot of my Sagittarius babes battling with feeling alone (even more so than the average social-distancer). There is a deep ache here that just can’t seem to go away, and that ache is due to you avoiding vulnerability in your close connections. Take some time to lighten the load of your past wounds; you’re not meant to be abandoned, and you can forgive those in your past who have left you high and dry. Now is the time to create a more connected future for yourself and those around you. Think about joining a club, a new community, or even an online platform focused on connecting you to like-minded people. Explore a new pastime (do I hear “Queen’s Gambit” chess vibes?), or reach out to an old friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while. You deserve to love and be loved in return, my Centaur.
PAGE OF CUPS: I see love, forgiveness, and sweet offers in the pipeline for you, my Caps. It’s time to soften that tough outer shell and let your guard down. With the energy of this card projecting onto your 2021 beginning, allow this past year to be awash as you redefine who you are at your core: a lover. Maybe consider writing to a loved one or expressing apologies for something that’s still plaguing you from your past. Think about those who you’ve hurt in the past with cold words, or simply out of pride. Is today the day you let the past go and move toward a more joyous beginning? Let forgiveness set you free, and allow yourself to be born anew this year.
AQUARIUS
NINE OF SWORDS: I’m seeing fretfulness, stress, and trouble sleeping as my Aquarians enter into 2021. There’s been a sense of jealousy or comparison arising for you, and it’s time to really sit with what the fear underneath it all is. Are you afraid of being rejected? Left out? Feeling replaceable? Let the emotions bubble up to the surface fully so you can finally feel them and heal them. A reminder, Aquarius babe: You are uniquely, brilliantly, vibrantly YOU—the world does not need more of the same. It’s time to pave your own path forward and make 2021 your most authentic year yet. Buckle up, this is a new route we’re taking!
PISCES
PAGE OF WANDS: I’m seeing a lot of shiny new ideas for you in 2021, Pisces. Whether you’ve been in a creative lull, or simply had more important things to take care of, know that the juices are about to start flowing… and not just coming in spurts, but really rewiring the way that you operate. Each person, place, and thing will start to bring you ideas on your new project. How are you representing yourself with your work? Online? To those around you? More importantly, are you feeling understood? If the answer is no, this year is going to give you the opportunity to bring your thoughts and ideas to life. Ask a friend to use their studio space, take an art class, start sharing your writing on social media. This is the year to live with “accurate self expression” as your motivation. The world is ready to watch you shine!

If you’re looking to continue building your reading habit this year, then we think you’ll enjoy diving into these selections. By Barbara Bellesi Zito 5 STEPS TO FABULOUS: CHOICES FOR LIVING BEAUTIFULLY, INSIDE AND OUT! VANESSA COPPES CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
You know her as BELLA’s fierce and fabulous editor-in-chief. (Those are our words. She’s much too modest!) But did you also know that Vanessa wrote a book?! Here’s why: “I wanted to encourage and support women in finding their own definition of what a fabulous life can look like for them. Because we are all fabulous. You’re a child of God and you do not need fixing. Maybe just some healing, like I did.”
1 2 3 4 5 80
To make the most of a fresh start in 2021, here are Vanessa’s tips: Transmit health from within. Practicing healthy habits is one of the building blocks to being beautiful inside and out. Spend some time on your appearance. Taking the time to choose clothes that complement your body type and shape, as well as accentuate your features with accessories, ensures that you portray a more beautiful you. Also, take time to exercise. Define your own personal belief and value system. As individuals, we know how we feel about a situation despite outside influences. Defining what our own personal beliefs are and living by those values align the body and mind. Respect the individuality and opinions of others. Even if you have learned to practice the values you believe, your attitude can prevent you from respecting other people’s choices to be themselves. Pompous arrogance or self-indulgence, leading to the disrespect of others, is a trend you should not fall victim of, as it doesn’t make you more beautiful or better than them. Volunteer. Grow your internal beauty by mentoring others, helping in your local community, or simply being a shoulder to lean on when someone comes to you for help. Volunteering will not only make you more beautiful inside, but it will also add beauty to the lives of others as well.
THE INFLUENCER CODE: HOW TO UNLOCK THE POWER OF INFLUENCER MARKETING AMANDA RUSSELL Hatherleigh Press
Social media is a powerful platform that can make small companies and ordinary people become veritable stars, seemingly overnight. If you’ve ever fancied yourself as an Instagram influencer, want to grow your business, or get more eyes on a cause you’re passionate about, those thumbs-up can add up to something big. Get the scoop on building your own brand of awesome from Amanda Russell, YouTube star, professor, and entrepreneur. She’ll peel back the curtain on how you can tap into influencer marketing with a three-step code that will get your unique message out the right way to more people than you ever imagined.
Unlock your inner influencer Amanda Russell likens social media to the printing press, which she calls “a revolution in communication history.” But unlike that centuries-old invention, social media is a platform that everyone has access to, whether you are posting your own content or just scrolling by that of others. “[Social media] has democratized the ability to have an audience so you don’t need the resources it takes to get a television show pitched and produced,” she says. “You can flip your phone around [and start recording].” Even if not all of us aspire to be the next TikTok star, Amanda says we can still use social media as a platform to communicate with others—many, many others. “[Social media is] a megaphone, basically,” she says. “If I told you a story via the telephone, the telephone doesn’t become the influencer. It’s the force behind it, the person telling the story.” Amanda’s book will help you become the force behind your story.

“The Flight Attendant ” has arrived
Loyal readers of this column might remember when we first talked about Kaley Cuoco’s new TV show, “The Flight Attendant” (based on the Chris Bohjalian novel of the same name). Well, after production delays due to the pandemic, the limited series show is finally available to stream on HBO Max. The gist: Hard-partying flight attendant Cassie (Kaley) is used to waking up with a raging hangover. But this time, she wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead guy. She can’t remember what happened—which means she could be a suspect. This darkly humorous thriller gave Kaley a chance to shed her girl-next-door image from “The Big Bang Theory”—and critics seem to agree that audiences will like seeing another side of this talented star. HOW TO BOUNCE BACK after a
BREAKUP By Carmelia Ray, celebrity matchmaker and online dating expert
82
F
or many, the new year represents a time to reset, reflect, set new goals, and for singles—find new love. Peak breakup season begins after Thanksgiving and typically runs through the winter and into spring. And, surprisingly, the week of Valentine’s Day is also a peak time for couples to split.
Perhaps the pressure and obligation of buying gifts or meeting family members forces people to reflect on their partnerships and end unfulfilling relationships. Singles who conveniently coupled up during “cuffing season” will unmatch when the weather warms up and the honeymoon phase is over. As a dating coach, I’ve been advising couples who rushed to pair up during quarantine, and now find themselves doubting their choice to cohabitate with someone they barely know. Many of my matchmaking clients were eager to find connection under lockdown to help pass the time with someone special, rather than having to isolate on their own. When breaking up is inevitable, you need the tools to bounce back as quickly and as pain-free as possible. Here are four steps for you to take to bounce back after a breakup.
1 2
DISCONNECT FROM ALL SOCIAL MEDIA
There’s no easy way to get over your relationship, especially if you choose to stay connected on social media. Once you’ve decided it’s over, it’s time to disengage and move on. I strongly advise my clients to block and disconnect from their ex on all social media platforms (especially if they lack scrolling self-control). And, a post-breakup digital detox is an ideal way for you to avoid having to answer people’s DMs or questions about your relationship status. The constant reminder of your past partnership will only have you thinking about the “what if ’s,” “could have been’s,” and “should have’s.” Seeing photos of happy times in the past, and noticing your ex seemingly happier without you could lead you down a relationship rabbit hole.
ALLOW A FIXED AMOUNT OF TIME TO GRIEVE
Acknowledging your pain and facing your fears of being alone is a normal part of healing. I have spent many hours coaching clients through unexpected and devastating breakups during the lockdown. Some were caught by complete surprise, while others had predicted the end was near.
Feeling sad, angry, and upset is allowed and expected, but you need to set a time limit on the amount of time you’re going to dwell in these negative emotions. Lying in bed all day under the covers, crying your eyes out, and eating your way out of sadness should be limited to no more than a couple of hours and calories. If you can set a physical timer, find the strength to do something productive and positive when it rings. Start by giving yourself 30 minutes to an hour, up to two hours—max. It will become easier over time. An accountability partner or support person can also help you through this initial difficult time.
3
EXERCISE AND KEEP MOVING
Daily exercise and active movement can help to reduce stress, increase mental alertness, and have an overall positive impact on your health. Set your intentions to crush a workout goal, or make it a point to change things up and try a kickboxing class, hot yoga, Orange Theory, F45, paddle-boarding, or hiking outdoors. There are countless benefits of incorporating exercise as a fun and healthy distraction instead of turning to substances that only cause more harm, lead to bad decisions, and have you spiraling out of control. Bouncing back from a breakup takes time, patience, and a proactive approach to healing. But with some time and effort, you’re sure to create and bring joy and optimism back into dating.
4
PRACTICE SELF-LOVE AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT
A failed relationship can leave you feeling less than, unworthy, and broken. Know and accept this relationship did not work out for a reason. Remember that true love happens when two people willingly choose each other, so in this case, he or she was not your forever person. You’ll never have to force or manipulate the right partner to be with you when they love you and want to work on the relationship. Now that you’re no longer preoccupied with your relationship, turn the focus and energy on your personal self-development. You don’t need someone to love you to be whole and complete; you only need to be comfortable in your own skin and find joy in your own company. Your breakup opens doors for new and more compatible romantic opportunities. Take the time to reflect, learn, grow, and evaluate what worked and what failed in your past relationship. You’ll come out of the breakup more informed, confident, and clear about the needs and values required in your next partnership.

THE RIGHT and
WRONG WAY
TO FIGHT By Jarrod Thalheimer
84
E
ven the greatest of love stories has to navigate the storms of life. No matter how touchy-feely, kissy-face-happy you and yours might be, there will come times when the sky turns dark and the relationship rains begin to absolutely pour. And yes, there will be fighting.
Obviously, these dust-ups can vary in both tenor and intensity, not to mention their overall impact on your particular union as a whole. That’s to be expected, of course. You can’t ever eliminate fighting. You’re both individuals who have unique issues, problems, and needs that are not always met, addressed, or even respected. But if you don’t stand up for yourself, things won’t change. That means a fight now and again is inevitable. But it doesn’t have to destroy your relationship. Believe it or not, there does exist a sort of “Queensbury Rules” for couple-fighting. It’s not official per se (as in, I’m only now just writing it down), but once followed, they should lead said couples to sunnier skies and legitimately brighter days together. At least that’s the idea. Am I crazy? Have a look and see what you think...
COUPLE-FIGHTING
DON’TS
DON’T GET PHYSICAL.
There is never, ever any excuse for raising a hand (or punching, throwing, grabbing, or similar) at any time. This is someone you love and care for. If you can’t get your point across without a shove or breaking something, then you’ve already lost the argument. Truly, if you allow any room in your relationship for violence, I would suggest it’s clearly doomed, and one or both of you should get to safety as soon as possible. No hitting or throwing things—period. You learned that lesson way back in kindergarten, and it should still hold true today.
DON’T BE PETTY.
When you feel hurt or wounded, the temptation to lash out and cut (metaphorically) the other person is irresistible. But you can’t give in to the urge. Thanks to the closeness you share, you both possess an absolute mountain of dirt on the other person, and if you decide to start flinging it just to win an argument, you are being petty and playing really, really dirty. Ultimately, that will damage whatever trust you have in each other, which is fatal for any relationship. Remember: Play fair, keep your complaints to the question at hand, and resist the urge to attack a weak spot just to score a point. If your argument isn’t going anywhere, maybe it’s because it wasn’t that good in the first place.
DON’T PIGGYBACK.
When the knives start flying (again, metaphorically speaking!), it can sometimes seem like a good idea to haul out all of your accumulated grievances and dump them on the table. Inevitably, what was a pointed discussion about who cleans the kitchen (or not) suddenly morphs into an all-out war about relatives, money, personal hygiene, bad habits, old indignities, missed birthdays, and more. Don’t do it. Resist the urge to pile it on. Focus on the issue at hand and try your best to keep it there. The bigger the mess you make, the harder it is to clean up. Keep it small and specific, and work on finding your way through that one first. There will always be time to address the other issues…later.
DON’T HOLD GRUDGES.
Part of fighting is that once the issue has been torn apart you both have to let it go and move on. Keeping the hard feelings alive for weeks or months (or years) on end will do nothing to strengthen your bond and will actually weaken it. Learn to let it go. Once you’ve said your piece and the other person acknowledges your issue, that should be enough. It’s time to move forward, which should always be the main goal of any couple seeking love from each other.
COUPLE-FIGHTING
DOS
DO STAND UP FOR YOURSELF. The point of
fighting in the first place is to get the things that are bothering you out into the open. If you start to give in before things even really get going, you’re not going to help your issues one bit. Speak your mind and make your point. Yes, the situation is heated and uncomfortable, but sometimes that’s what it takes to get what we bury deep up to the surface. If the person you love actually cares about you, he or she will be glad you did—eventually.
DO LISTEN TO WHAT THE OTHER PERSON SAYS . In the heat of battle it can be hard to focus on
anything other than the emotions flying around and the words streaming out of your mouth. The thing is, to be an actual fight, there has to be another person present, and if he is, you have to make an effort to listen to what he’s saying too. That doesn’t mean he’s right, or even that you’re wrong, but when both of you are speaking from the heart in a supercharged setting there is a chance that something worthwhile will be said. Listen for those nuggets, and pay attention to the points being made on both sides. You might find that you share more common ground than you realized.
DO KEEP A SENSE OF HUMOR (ABOUT YOURSELF). When emotions run hot, it’s
easy to lose your sense of humor—and even become extra hostile when someone tries to tweak it. Avoid going fully dark (if you can), and try to keep one eye on the silliness that often permeates the things that somehow trigger us the most. Yes, it drives you crazy when she says, “You’re just like your father…” but you have to admit, sometimes you really are like your father—and it’s kind of funny! If you allow that tiny smirk of humor to get through your outer shell of anger, you might just bring the whole fight to a close on a happy note vs. a bitter or sour one.
DO ADMIT YOUR FAULTS OR MISTAKES. When some people fight, they consider it a sign of
weakness to admit fault of any kind. Avoid this trap if you can. Being able to admit when you messed up can give the other person the freedom to admit such things too. Keeping an eye on our own screw-ups—and being willing to admit to them—can help us to understand where the other person is coming from. Do that, and you might just find yourself constructing the sort of adult relationship that can stand the test of time, which really should be the point of all this anyway, right? 85
the beauty of giving back
A
THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE GIVING
s we look to the year By Yolanda F. Johnson ahead and think of the hope we have for the future, it’s also important to look back on the Black Benefactors reactive nature of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice movements, Founded by Tracey Webb, Black Benefactors is a giving circle based in civil unrest, economic uncertainty—you name it, it seems to have occurred in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to enhance the well-being of Black children, 2020. And, whatever came our way, we had to remain resilient, flexible, and youth and families by encouraging philanthropy, community service and we had to pivot! In fact, I call 2020 “The Great Pivot,” where we needed to advocacy in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. continuously tap into our skill sets and talents in order to reinvent ourselves BlackBenefactors.org into whatever was needed to get the job done, survive and thrive. When it comes to the “good work” of giving back, it’s important to recognize how so many people, namely women, were able to reinvent their philanthropic endeavors through giving circles. Collective giving has seen a great resurgence over the past year. First, due to the congenial nature of it, and second, because it allows one person to stand together with many others in order to make an even greater impact. A giving circle is a group of people who pool their dollars together to ultimately give to designated organizations or causes. Often, members of a giving circle are all committed to the same cause or are often part of the same ethnic background. Because of this, the circle eventually also begins to offer professional and personal development programming, networking and more, as everyone comes together for a common good. Some giving circles require a minimum “buy-in” amount, and have periodic voting cycles when the group decides where the money will go. So, while your $200 would have certainly done some good for an organization, just imagine what 50 $200 gifts could accomplish via a giving circle? While you can usually find a giving circle anywhere you’re located across the United States, here are a few options of some of the most successful giving circles, should you be interested in joining one.
Impact 100
Impact100 is a collective force for good; uniting and empowering women to give together, creating transformational impact, locally and globally. Impact100 was founded by Wendy Steele in 2001 in response to feeling as though women’s roles in philanthropy needed a new way to be expanded and encouraged. Wendy launched the organization with the goal of empowering women to see themselves as activists through utilizing large grants to make an impact within their communities. Impact100council.org 86
Asian Women Giving Circle
Asian Women Giving Circle is an all-volunteer group of Asian American women in New York City who are passionate about amplifying the transformative power of arts and culture to advance an equitable and just society. They pool their resources to fund projects led by Asian American women artists and community groups. They take risks by investing in emerging and cutting-edge change makers. They stay rooted in the community, learning and innovating together. They believe funding can be a form of activism. AsianWomenGivingCircle.org
Philanos
Can’t find a giving circle but want to learn more about them or find resources for starting your own? Look no further than Philanos, the leading women’s giving circle network in the United States. Philanos supports the creation, development, and expansion of collective giving circles by giving a national voice to the high-impact collective giving movement. Philanos at a glance: • More than 17,500 women strong • More than 75 member organizations worldwide • Granted more than $140 million to nonprofit organizations Philanos.org
However you choose to reinvent your personal way of giving back this year, be inspired and hopeful that there are many ways to shine a light on the good work that is needed in the world today. We’ll explore a few of these in upcoming issues, but hopefully, if a giving circle looks like the right fit for you, you can find the resources you need to move forward.

88
Yield: 6 muffins Prep time: 10 minutes Bake time: 15 minutes
INGREDIENTS: Coffee-infused butter (optional): • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter or ghee • 2 tablespoons whole coffee or espresso beans (not ground) Whole wheat coffee muffins: • 1½ cups whole wheat flour • 2 teaspoons baking soda • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 tablespoons espresso powder • ¼ cup Greek yogurt • ⅓ cup honey • ¼ cup strongly brewed coffee • 6 ounces plain kombucha (or plain seltzer/sparkling water) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Optional: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter or ghee. Immediately add the coffee beans and cover. Set aside to steep while you prepare the muffin batter. 2. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°F). Grease a 6-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and espresso powder. Set aside. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, honey, and brewed coffee until well incorporated. Add mixture to the dry ingredients then pour in kombucha, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. 4. Scoop the muffin mixture into the prepared muffin tin. Bake at 425°F for 5 minutes then lower oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) for another 8-10 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of muffin. Toothpick should come out clean or with just a few crumbs stuck to it. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin. 5. Meanwhile, strain the coffee beans from the melted butter, pressing on the beans with a spoon or back of a spatula to extract all the butter that you can. Place butter in the fridge until solidified. Spread on muffins and enjoy! NOTES: • Wrap cooled muffins in plastic wrap and store at room temperature for two days or in the fridge for up to one week. Freeze individually wrapped muffins for up to three months. Thaw at room temperature or warm gently in the microwave or toaster. • Store butter in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one month.

ow more than ever, we crave the uncomplicated, unadorned, and untainted—especially when it comes to our well-being. The new year is typically a time for reinvention and promising resolutions, like getting our health and wellness in check. From binging on spin classes to stocking up on vitamins, our health becomes the focal point of our lives come January 1. But there is one thing we tend to overlook in our quest for mind and body domination, and that’s hydration. The amount and type of water we are consuming is the most important factor in creating a healthy lifestyle. One brand in particular takes the cake (or fruit platter, in the spirit of new year’s resolutions)—1907water, which is family-owned, high-quality, packed with health and beauty benefits, and guarantees a naturally sourced and unique taste.
Quality over quantity Water shouldn’t be complicated—I mean, it is just water! It’s a natural resource, yet it seems like there is a lot of processing, enhancing, and manipulation that goes into the final product we consume. Various other top-name water brands discuss the processes they exploit to strip the water bare, later adding the electrolytes back in, or the multiple sources their water is derived from—in other words, you don’t actually know what you’re drinking or where it’s from.
Cheers to a new year
filled with health, happiness—and
hydration! By Jennifer DeCillis
Unique taste guarantee
As 1907water’s production manager explains, “We are extremely fortunate to have discovered this deep protected aquifer—at 680 feet through solid rock, this spring rushes to the surface for the first time in 50,000 years. The flow is consistent and strong, bringing much-needed purity to an otherwise contaminated planet.
Family-owned
1907water is one of the last familyowned water companies on our supermarket shelves. They are 100% New Zealand-owned and operated— no major corporations or large private equity companies here. With a small staff of 16 employees at their bottling facility in Paeora, plus a staff of four at the head office and two more employees in the U.S., 1907 Water is truly a small business you can feel good about supporting.
1907water is purely, naturally occurring, and their bottles are made from 100% recycled materials. The water in each and every bottle of 1907 is sourced from 680 feet underground and arrives at the surface under its own natural pressure—no pumping or energy required. The 1907water plant is also run on hydro and thermal generated electricity, which means no fossil fuels are required for production. More importantly, the chlorine- and chemical -free water, with a naturally high sodium content, acts as a natural electrolyte, aiding in faster and more effective hydration.
In today’s modern polluted world, it is very rare to find an aquifer that has never before had any interaction with civilization. For over 50,000 years, this aquifer has fed from uninhabited snow-covered mountain peaks, also a national park, which gives it enduring protection and gives us the privilege of indulging in its unique and wonderful taste.”

Make it international
“For us Italians, morning coffee is a real ritual, right when you awake and before going to work—but also after lunch and dinner. Usually, you see it paired in the morning with a croissant and jam or biscuits (biscotti). The same goes for the end of lunch or dinner at a restaurant, where it is usually served with baked biscuits or a small chocolate praline. “The most popular coffee in Italy is espresso. Generally, when we talk about espresso, there are very few variations or ingredients added in very small quantities; these include milk foam, a drop of liquor (usually anise or grappa), and hazelnut cream. The secret to a good Italian espresso is high quality coffee, the grind of the coffee beans, the pressure that is applied during preparation, and the water, which is best if decalcified. “Personally, I recommend investing in a great coffee machine, there are so many on the market but the thing I would give more attention to is the type of coffee that you can brew with it—although it’s easier now that roasters produce pods of all kinds and that are suitable for any type of coffee machine.” -Executive Chef Silvia Grossi of Il Salviatino in Fiesole, Italy “The most popular coffee in Guatemala is that which is home grown. We are very proud to have great coffee here in Guatemala, and we like to drink local blends, not only to support our own growers, but because the quality is one of the best. In fact, Guatemalan coffee has won numerous awards. “People in Guatemala drink coffee throughout the day, traditionally black with a splash of milk and some sugar. If you’d like to put an international twist inspired by Guatemala, try drinking coffee with a nice piece of sweet bread—that’s a ritual here! “Black coffee is popular here because the flavor is so unique, but people definitely enjoy variations like cappuccinos, lattes and more. I think we are getting more and more creative with our coffee and culinary scene in general here in Guatemala.” - Chef Marcela Jongezoon of Casa Palopò in Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Trend-spot
your start to 2021 By Norah Lawlor
New Year’s has come and gone, and the chilly weather has rolled in. But that has never deterred New Yorkers from venturing outside. From finding safe, new office space for the “big return” and experiencing a taste of France, to having Italy delivered to your front door while keeping warm with a vodka cocktail, here is our must-have list of things to keep you busy during these cold months. THE FRENCH RESTAURANT: DEMARCHELIER BISTRO Family owned and operated bistro, Demarchelier Restaurant, has officially opened in Greenport, NY, bringing a taste of France to North Fork. Situated in the charming village, the new incarnation of the Upper East Side classic is located in the heart of Greenport on Main Street. Like the Upper East Side restaurant that closed its doors after 40 years of business, the Greenport location is casual and extremely cozy. From marbletop tables and the antique bar top (which was lovingly relocated from the former location), to the outdoor seating and colorful paintings on the wall by the owner’s father, famed artist Eric Demarchelier, the atmosphere makes Demarchelier the perfect sojourn in North Fork for a quick bite to eat, a romantic rendezvous, a nice meal with family and friends, or simply to dream about that next trip to Paris. DemarchelierRestaurant.com THE WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE: 632 BROADWAY As business owners begin to bring their workforces back into the office, landlords and tenant reps are reporting a surge of interest in pre-war office space. Citing concerns over open floor plans, ventilation, and lobby flow, office tenants are now hunting for locations designed to respond to the era of the last global pandemic of 1918. One tower that is benefiting from the renewed interest in historically designed commercial space is 632 Broadway in Noho. The landmarked Classical Revival loft building was recently renovated with large windows that create the all-important cross ventilation, plus a second lobby to prevent crowding. According to Kenneth Fishel, president of Renaissance Properties, a commercial landlord with buildings in Noho, Midtown and South Florida, multiple leases have been signed since COVID-19 struck. “It’s one the most beautiful spaces in our portfolio,” explains Kenneth, who also owns office buildings at 627 Broadway, 264 West 40th Street, and 62 West 45th Street. “The architecture and design of this era is, I think to everyone’s surprise, extremely relevant to the needs of the tenants of 2021.” RenaissancePropertiesNY.com

THE LUXURY VODKA: GOLDLOK VODKA American craft luxury vodka, Goldlok, offers the tantalizing, unfiltered expression of a smooth vodka. The company’s creative ingenuity has been welcomed by mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts alike. For example, to create Goldlok Vodka, the passionate taste of sugar cane is distilled five times from the natural essence of the Amazon in Brazil. Wellness tips you’ll want— — for
and need
2021
By Jennifer Walsh
Looking for ways to tap into your best version of you for the new year? We asked a few of the leading experts in their fields for tips on how to stay motivated and in line with our wellness goals.
Do what you love to reach your goals
It’s important to get really clear on your “why” as well as your goals. When you are clear about what you want to accomplish and why, you’re more likely to stick to your routine. Start now with something really manageable—maybe it’s three days a week. Take the next month and try different workouts to figure out what works for you. Choose something you love, and as time passes you can bump up your workouts to help meet your personal goals. - Allisa Tucker, master trainer, TheAKT.com 96
Get a better night’s sleep
When people go through prolonged periods of high stress, their sleep is compromised from issues regarding the onset of sleep to challenges falling back asleep when awakened in the middle of the night. NuCalm is patented neuroscience technology clinically proven to lower stress and improve sleep quality without drugs. This system combines three components that rapidly “switch off stress” and transition the user to deep relaxation and recovery within minutes, restoring the mind and body without drugs. Placing one’s biosignal processing disk onto the left wrist activates the brain’s natural relaxation system by interrupting the adrenaline response. Then it’s time to open the app, use the headset, put the included eye mask on, and sit back and listen to the sounds and frequencies to quiet and still the mind. - Jim Poole, CEO and President, NuCalm.com
Embrace food as medicine
As a medical doctor, I prescribe “food as medicine,” and my Rx, or recipe (Rx is Latin for recipe) is simple: Eat more plants, less meat, and cook more. We’ve always known that good nutrition is important, but it’s more important now than ever before. As we continue to hunker down into 2021, we will need to practice self-care. That starts with what we put into our mouths. - Dr. Robert Graham, chef, FRESHMedNYC.com
Tap more, stress less
Tapping, which is the practice of using your fingertips to tap specific meridian points on the body, is proven to reduce anxiety and stress, but only if you use it! Best practices include tapping often and trying a variety of meditations to find what works best for you. The Tapping Solution app includes dozens of meditations for all sorts of scenarios, from family stress and weight loss to sleep issues to problems at work. The most popular meditation, the free Release Anxiety Tapping series, has shown a 41% reduction of anxiety in less than 10 minutes. - Jessica Ortner, author and creator, TheTappingSolution.com
Keep moving throughout the day
Since we’re spending more time at home, make your home more dynamic and better on your body. Create space to sit and stretch out on the floor and take your entertainment or your 100th Zoom call on the move. Keep a mat rolled out and tidy to create your own home gym. Set up a dynamic workspace next to a window for natural light, eye breaks, and fresh air. Do what you can to optimize your environment. In “Move Your DNA,” my book, I focus on the teachings of simple gradual movement throughout the day, which can keep us healthy and nimble. - Katy Bowman, biomechanist and author, NutritiousMovement.com
Explore IV therapy for an at-home wellness boost
-
Not only is IV therapy an effective way to reboot nutrient levels in the body, it’s also an easy way to get hydrated. Seventy-five percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated and don’t even realize it or its impact on our daily lives. IV therapy delivers hydration plus vitamins and minerals directly to the blood stream. This means, nutrients bypass the digestive tract and are immediately absorbed by the body at a rate much higher than ingestion of oral supplements. People who experience IV therapy often feel immediately energized by treatment and can feel these benefits for up to 48 hours after their drip. Kyon Hood, MD, Chief Medical Officer, IveeApp.com 97

IS THIS STILL
YOU? By Dr. Julie Davelman
98
M
ost of us recognize—at least in theory—that we are everevolving as people. However, if asked to describe ourselves, we may describe not the person we are today, but the person we are used to thinking of ourselves as.
Let’s say that as a young adult you were laid back and spontaneous, and you view those traits very positively. When you enter the next stage of your life, it may be important for you to continue to think of yourself this way, your full-time job and three young children not-withstanding. The truth, however, may be that just getting the family to leave the house takes days of planning. Why continue to think of yourself in old terms that no longer apply? It is easy to see that “laid back and spontaneous” makes for a better-sounding self-identity than “uptight and over-scheduled.” This is why so people stick to an identity that no longer applies because it feels better to think of themselves that way. So why is that a problem? What’s wrong with thinking of yourself in the “best way possible” even if it is no longer true? The problem is that self-identity drives the expectations we set for ourselves. If you really are spontaneous, you would expect to say “yes” to a last-minute dinner with a friend on a Tuesday night. And when you inevitably have to say “no” to that dinner because you are working late and still have to pick up your son from practice, you are disappointed. Yet you are likely to beg off those dinner plans without giving yourself a path toward what you want. If, instead of continuing to think of yourself as spontaneous, you embrace your overscheduled identity, your reply to the friend could be, “I have a lot of things going on, and it is hard for me to do things last minute. How about we plan for next Wednesday?” Embracing an identity that really fits who you are now gives you a chance to see your friend a different night, while no longer pretending to be someone you are not anymore is liable to leave you with a constant sense of disappointment for having failed at being “you.”
Another big part of your life that may be affected by an outdated identity is the company you keep. Let’s say you view yourself as a “partier.” You are likely to find yourself surrounded by other people who enjoy going out and having an active social life. Now what happens when you regularly realize that you would rather to have a quiet conversation with a small group of friends over dinner than go to that new club? Chances are, your old crowd isn’t always a perfect match for the way you now prefer to spend your time. Updating your identity would be a good first step to allow you to start building a network of like-minded people that match the “you” of today. So, how does one do this? You are unlikely to wake up one day and say to yourself, “I used to be this person, and now I am this other kind of person.” The way you start to reconceptualize your identity is by reflecting on your reactions to common themes in your life. Are you regularly disappointed by the fact that you are no longer able to do something that you had previously done frequently? And, if so, do you actually want to do that thing now for any reason other than avoiding the feeling of disappointment in yourself? If your answer is “no,” then it’s time to realign your identity with your current interests. Similarly, if you are no longer looking forward to seeing some of your old friends, or if you cannot think of things to talk to them about, it may be time to look for friends who share your present interests and stage of life. Once you recognize that your identity needs an update, you can try new identities on for size. As in the case of the old identity, watch your reactions. When you see that something feels right, you will have found your new way of thinking of yourself. At every stage of life, embrace who you are now. Don’t be afraid of losing the “real you,” and don’t get caught up in trying to get back to being the person you had once been. You are always changing; your self-identity just needs a chance to catch up to the person you likely already are. 99

For many months, all of the things many found it difficult to focus on the things they normally would. people would do on a routine basis to feel good were put on pause. Whether it was because places were closed, or the desire to continue showing up for ourselves got lost, it was a year we all watched come to “I think that all got to people, and I believe they’re really looking to the a standstill. new year, wanting to hit it hard,” says Dr. Preminger. But as we dive head first into 2021, it’s important to remember that while we may not be able to change what’s happening outside our doors, we can change what happens inside, and that all starts with selfcare. Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, one of Manhattan’s top plastic surgeons, points out one common side effect of the pandemic: It prevented
As Clint Eastwood famously said, “Tomorrow is promised to no one,” which is why it’s so important to make sure we show up for ourselves each and every day. Because we are looking to this upcoming year as a time for reinvention, we sat down with Dr. Preminger to talk about some of the ways in which she is helping her patients look and feel their very best.
The start of a new year is not only a time to reflect but also to make promises to ourselves. As a doctor, you’re a part of the patient’s journey. What does that mean to you, knowing that ultimately you’re responsible for the change they’re seeking? This is particularly poignant now with everything going on in the world. I have been busier than I’ve ever been, operating multiple days a week, and I think it has to do with the fact that people want a change. Things in the world have changed, perspective has changed a little bit, and I think people want a bit of optimism. They want to take care of themselves.
Do you see many male patients? If so, what type of procedures do they look for?
I do treat a fair number of male patients although the overwhelming majority are females. I will say I think men appreciate a little bit of a softer side, and I have a different style as a woman. I’m less dogmatic about my approach, and I think men are sometimes embarrassed to go to another man. The things men come in for are less diverse than what women come in for. [They seek treatments] like liposuction or CoolSculpting, usually [targeting] fat, abdominal fat, or fat under the neck or muffin top area. They’re also great candidates for these because they’ve never been pregnant, they have good skin tone, and they don’t have muscle laxity. A fair number of men also complain about gynecomastia, which is excess breast tissue of the chest. I think in particular they’re embarrassed to go to another man for this; oddly enough, they feel less embarrassed going to see a woman. Photography by VITAL AGIBALOW for HENSEL
People have also saved money because there really hasn’t been anywhere to go, they couldn’t eat out, couldn’t travel, and this is one of the few luxuries we have left right now. I think people are happy to invest in themselves, and I feel good to be a part of that process.
What are some of the most sought after procedures patients have been asking for?
I’ve been doing a ton of breasts and Mommy Makeovers, as well as bigger procedures that involve a bit of downtime, such as face lifts, eyes, and a lot of liposuction.
Dr. B. Aviva Preminger
Why is this time of year always an ideal time for certain procedures?
Winter is always a great time to do things that involve downtime. In terms of scarring and healing, laser procedures are best done now because of the lack of sun exposure. I usually have to deal with patients’ vacation schedules, but right now people are traveling less and working from home, so there is no sun exposure, making it an ideal time to get these things done.
We hear the term “Mommy Makeover” often, but you don’t have to technically be a mom to have one done. What exactly does this popular procedure involve?
It’s a procedure that is pretty subjective; when people use the term they are using it loosely as a combination of procedures—most commonly breast, belly, and liposuction procedures. But then things get added on, and it ends up a little different in every situation. I think terminology is something patients struggle with— they don’t know what to call things. “Mommy Makeover” has a little less medical ring to it and is a bit more of a general term. When people come in and say what they want, I say to them, “Tell me what bothers you.” And so it really is a combination of things that make you feel good about the way you look. PremingerMD
Men also come in for injectables—Botox, fillers. The same way women want to stay young in the professional arena, men want to stay young as well.
What message do you want to share with patients when it comes to self-care?
As plastic surgeons, what we do has such a huge psychological component in a very positive way. It’s pretty amazing for me to get to do what I do. When you can turn it around for someone, that’s powerful.
I think there are two components to what plastic surgeons do. There is the actual physical component we can achieve, and then there is the tremendous psychological impact of what we do. I think that it’s particularly powerful, especially in times like these. One of the things plastic surgeons do is create hope.
How would you say you’re creating hope through the work that you do?
Plastic surgeons are innovators, we’re problem-solvers in general. I do a lot of complicated revision surgeries and those patients are tremendously grateful. They’ve been operated on before, they’re not satisfied, and they want to know that somebody can help them. So when I can turn that around and hit a home run on something that has been tried before and was unsuccessful, those patients are even more appreciative. For me, every case—every patient—no two are the same. It’s one of the reasons I love what I do. We are masters of reinvention and creativity, and I think COVID-19 has really made us have to think about that.
In what way would you say that’s true?
There are ways in which our practices reinvented themselves in terms of safety standards. I’m fortunate to have an operating room here in my office, and that affords certain safety precautions for patients. The whole focus has been on 2020 being a terrible year, but we’ve turned the corner to 2021. I think we need to actively make this year different. People are feeling a certain desperation to create hope and take care of themselves, and I think plastic surgery is part of that change.

“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

George Floyd memorialized by artists Shenna Vaughn and William Bentley Artists Shenna Vaughn and William Bentley collaborated to create this larger-than-life mural of George Floyd, which did more than challenge their technical abilities, it also pushed their creativity to amazing heights as they painted it in two separate locations. “We were inspired to be passionate with every brush stroke and intentional with every vibrant dressing of color,” explains Shenna. “With this we got to do our part in the form of art and hope to inspire. Our mural not only beautifies the Jamaica Queens community, it also inspires the productivity, resilience, and the enduring light needed in the circumstances of today and tomorrow's dark times.”
