BCT to present ‘Out of the Hat, a night of theater’

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Community Theater will present “Out of the Hat, a night of theater” on at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, at the BCT Performing Arts Center, 316 Beltrami Ave. NW.

The theater is bringing back this wild, 24-hour event that was originated by Greg Gasman. On Friday, July 7, five local writers draw ideas from three hats and will have 12 hours to write a 10- to 15-minute play.

Saturday morning at 8 a.m., five directors will

draw a play from a hat and have until 6 p.m. that evening to rehearse, costume and get props and technicals set up. TAt 7

p.m., they’ll present the five plays to the public. Tickets are $10 and are on sale at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Watermark Art Festival returns for 55th year

BEMIDJI — The Watermark Art Festival returns for the 55th year

July 15-16 at Watermark and Library Park.

Running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, the two-day juried fine art and craft fair has been a summer highlight for thousands of northern Minnesota residents and tourists since 1967.

Vendors sell everything from hand-crafted wood items, ceramics, apparel, jewelry, photography, metalworking, greeting cards, homemade preserves, soaps, stained glass, original paintings, garden art and more.

The festival area has been expanded to include the Watermark Art Center grounds as well as the historic tree-lined Library Park across the street. Over 100 artists, many new to the festival, will be featured in addition to artist demonstrations, three stages, entertainment, music and food. Watermark Art Center will also be open for visitors to the galleries and gift shop.

New to the festival will be free outdoor family art activities in addition to the free kid art space inside Watermark.

QR codes will be posted around the festival grounds that are linked to the latest updates to vendor maps and music schedules. There is no fee to attend.

Great River Rescue announces Pet Fixers clinics

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year.

Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.

Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.

Dates for this year’s clinics are:

► July 8 and 9

► Aug. 5 and 6

► Sept. 9 and 10

► Oct. 7 and 8

► Nov. 4 and 5

Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.

Bemidji Senior Center to hold pancake breakfast

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center is set to host its monthly pancake breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

Gallery North offers abstract

BEMIDJI — Gallery North is set to hold a “Creating Fantasy Creatures from Abstract Paintings” class from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, at the

gallery, 310 Fourth St. NW.

Participants will learn to “pull out” forms and creatures from abstract paintings, a release said. Instructor Charles Alberti will illustrate ideas from some of his older paintings using acrylic paints and acrylic paint markers.

Alberti, professor emeritus from Bemidji State University, is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Each student will complete two paintings of their own creativity. Participants can also bring older abstract paintings to experiment with using the ideas from this class.

The cost to participate is $60 and all materials will be provided. The class is limited to eight students.

BEMIDJI — Bemidji Area Aglow is set to meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 8, at Beltrami Electric, 4111 Technology Drive NW.

The guest speaker will be Jeshua Bush, who will be leading in praise and worship, testimonies and the gospel. All are welcome, free will offerings will be received.

Four Pines Bookstore to host ‘Where’s Waldo?’ event July 8-22

BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore is set to host a “Where’s Waldo?” search from July 8-22 at participating businesses in downtown Bemidji.

“Four Pines Bookstore is one of 300 U.S.-wide bookstores to participate in the Find Waldo Local 2023 event,” a release said. “This campaign celebrates the ‘Shop Local’ message and invites us to host a family-friendly ‘Where’s Waldo’ scavenger hunt in our downtown community.”

From July 8-22, participants can find Waldo at a dozen small businesses throughout downtown Bemidji. Passport cards for the event can be picked up in-store at Four Pines Bookstore starting July 8.

To conclude the event, Four Pines Bookstore will host a “Where’s Waldo?” party at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, for all participants. The celebration includes an in-store scavenger hunt, coloring pages, treats and giveaways.

Clearwater County Historical Society to hold used book sale July 8-9

SHEVLIN — The Clear-

water County Historical Society will hold a used book sale on Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9, at the History Center in Shevlin. Hours of the sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The books will cost 25 cents each.

Watermark to host Thalea String

BEMIDJI — Watermark

Art Center is set to host the Lakes Area Music Festival’s 2023 resident ensemble, Thalea String Quartet, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, at Watermark.

The group will place music by Ludwig van Beethoven alongside eclectic works of Canadian Inuit, South Asia and Latin American influences.

The quartet is comprised of Alex Cox on the cello, Kumiko Sakamoto on the violin, Lauren Spaulding on the viola and Christopher Whitley on the violin.

“The Thalea String Quartet brings their signature vibrancy and emotional commitment to dynamic performances that reflect the past, present, and the future of the string quartet rep-

ertoire while celebrating diverse musical traditions from around the world,” a release said.

“Fueled by the belief that chamber music is a powerful force for building community and human connection, the Thalea String Quartet has performed across North America, Europe, and China, and has appeared at the Kennedy Center, Massey Hall, and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.”

The quartet won the 2021 Ann Divine Educator Award from the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and were top prize winners at the 2018 Fischoff Competition and 2018 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

Tickets are not required to attend the performance and donations will be accepted at the door.

Bemidji Senior Center to hold activities

July 11

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center is set to

hold several activities on Tuesday, July 11, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW. The July book club will meet at 10 a.m., followed by a Silver Stretchers exercise class at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m. the center will host its July bingo game and at 2 p.m. there will be line dancing classes. All of these activities are free and open to the public.

Highway 2 construction in Bena to begin July 10

BEMIDJI — Motorists traveling on Highway 2 in Bena will experience lane closures and delays beginning July 10 as road construction begins.

The project includes constructing sidewalks, pedestrian crossing culvert replacements, curb and gutter as well as storm sewer infrastructure. Construction on the project will be completed under traffic by incorporating a bypass lane or temporary traffic signals. Motorists will experience traffic delays.

Benefits of the project include improved safety for motorists and pedestrians, improved drainage and a smoother, longerlasting driving surface.

Casper Construction is the contractor for the $3.4 million project. Con-

Bemidji library to hold annual book sale July 10-13

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library will hold its annual book sale July 10-13 at the Evangelical Free Church, 115 Carr Lake Road SW.

Here’s a look at the schedule for the week:

► On Monday, July 10, the book sale will be open to Friends of the Bemidji Public Library members from 4 to 7 p.m. Sign-ups will be available at the door for those who want to become members.

► Tuesday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 12, the book sale will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Over 15,000 books

will be available, priced at $0.50-$1.

► Thursday, July 15, is Bag Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bags to fill with books will be provided at the sale and cost $2 each.

Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., which includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert, iced tea,

lemonade and coffee. A patriotic choral concert performed by the First City Singers will begin at 7 p.m.
