3rd annual Anishinaabe Art Festival set for July 26-27

BEMIDJI — To showcase spectacular Indigenous art and entertainment, the third annual Anishinaabe Art Festival is returning on Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, at Bemidji State’s Hobson Memorial Union, 1500 Birchmont Drive NE.

Held this year in the Beaux Arts Ballroom, the two-day event will host a wide variety of authentic creations such as Indigenous art, traditional food tastings, child-friendly activities and demonstrations along with an array of cultural entertainment.

With Friday’s events starting at 11 a.m. and going until 6 p.m. and Saturday’s events running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the weekend will host over 50 artists and exhibitions.

According to the festival website, the goal is to

celebrate the richness of Anishinaabe history, culture and people, and seek to build intercultural knowledge and respect for diversity in the region through craft, visual arts, dance, food, storytelling and fashion.

Featured artwork will include birchbark crafts, jewelry, oil and acrylic painting, beadwork, sculpting, pottery, literary art, basketry, buckskin leatherwork and wearable art.

With a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help fund the festival, the three tribes of Leech Lake, Red Lake and White Earth along with the city of Bemidji have joined together to pave pathways for Indigenous artists, provide access to high-value markets and create an exchange of art and cultural knowledge in the region.

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host a garage sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.

There will be lots of items available for both pets and people, a release said. Attendees can also visit with one of the shelter dogs.

July 27 is the last day of the shelter’s shoe drive. People can drop off their new or gently used shoes at the garage sale as part of a fundraiser.

All proceeds from the garage sale and shoe drive will go to Great

River Rescue.

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will host a Family Olympics event from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 27, at Cameron Park.

Compete to win gold during this friendly competition sponsored by Sanford Health, Delta Dental of Minnesota and Ottertail Power, a release said.

Great River Rescue seeks shoe donations

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue, in partnership with Funds2Orgs, is accepting donations of new, gently used or worn shoes for its shoe drive fundraiser.

Any type of shoe in good condition can be donated, except rollerblades and skates. The shoes must be a matching pair. Cleats and winter boots are acceptable, a release said.

Items can be dropped off until July 27, at Great River Rescue, 612 Carr Lake Road SE.

For every pound of shoes collected, Great River will receive $0.40.

The shoes will be picked up by Funds2Orgs and sent to developing countries to create job opportunities for over 4,000 micro-entrepreneurs, lifting them out of poverty. It is estimated that 300 million people do not own shoes, the release said.

BEMIDJI — Buena Vista Ski Area will hold a Yellow Brick Road concert and dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at 19600 Irvine Ave. NW.

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts is set to hold a youth choir camp from Aug. 12-16 at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

The program is geared toward youth ages 8-18 who love to sing. This summer day camp, led by vocal instructors Annalise Aakhus, NikkiLee Nolden and Megan Moen will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

“Participants will find camaraderie with other young singers while learning to sing in harmony with others and develop the confidence to sing in front of an audience,” a release said.

Campers will sing a variety of songs from modern pop to canons and partner songs.

Family, friends and community members are invited to attend two performances throughout the week.

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host a string ensemble retreat workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 12-16, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

The camp is for all string players ages 8 to

adult with at least one year of experience reading music and playing their instrument.

Headwaters Music and Arts instructors Kathy Douglas, Julia Anderson and Elyot Kivi will give participants the opportunity to hone their skills, explore ensemble playing and forge lasting connections with fellow string enthusiasts, a release said.

The week’s activities will include ensemble rehearsals and small group coaching and will wrap up with a final ensemble performance opportunity for friends, family and community at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.

Parks and Rec to offer youth climbing club

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will host a youth climbing club from 10:30 a.m. to noon July 29-31 at the Gillett Wellness Center, 1801 Birch Lane NE.

This introductory course is designed to empower youth to discover the sport of climbing with experienced climbing instructors and a state-of-the-art climbing wall, a release said.

During each session, participants ages 9-14 will explore basic climbing movement skills and master techniques like knot tying and belaying. Each session is for up to 10 participants with two instructors.

Bagley Public Library to host reading dog Freya

BAGLEY — The Bagley Public Library will host Merry Mason Whipple and her therapy dog, Freya, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at the Bagley Public Library, 79 Spencer Clearwater Ave. Freya is a 9-year-old golden retriever who loves to listen to all kind of books, a release said. Attendees will take turns painting rocks and reading to the dog. Freya will stick around after the rock painting so kids in attendance will have a chance to read or visit with her.

Freya and Mason Whipple are certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, an organization that evaluates and certifies dogs and their handlers, who then are able to volunteer in the United States and Canada, added the release. ATD certification means that Freya and her handler were observed at least twice working with children. Mason Whipple passed a background check through the organization and Freya must have an annual check-up by a veterinarian and be up-todate with her rabies vaccination. Headwaters to host Rock Band Boot Camp

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host a Rock Band Boot Camp for young musicians from 1 to 4 p.m. July 29 to Aug. 2, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

Youth grades 4-12 with at least one to two years of experience playing drums, guitar, piano, bass or voice will learn by playing along with teachers and fellow students with the goal of performing on a live stage, a release said.

Led by Headwaters Music Instructors Casey Grangruth and Vincent Noble, this camp will teach participants everything from covers, songwriting, chord progressions, scales, singing harmonies, soloing, band communication and just having fun making music together, the release added.

The camp will end with a live show for family and friends.

Drumkits and most instruments are provided. Participants are welcome to bring a secondary instrument as well if they would like to learn how to improvise with the band, the release said.

The cost to attend is $200 per participant.

Sanford Health, Lueken’s Village Foods’ 26th annual Taco Fest set for July 31

BEMIDJI — Sanford Health invites community members to its annual Taco Fest from 11 a.m. to

7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in the Dragon Boat Festival Tent at the Lake Bemidji waterfront, 300 Bemidji Ave. N. For $10, tacos are served on fry bread with all the trimmings, dessert and a beverage. Flour tortillas are available upon request. The event will also feature live music by Sonny Johnson from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Rhonda and Orlando from 4 to 7 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go to support the United Way of Bemidji Area. Last year, the event raised over $26,000 for the United Way and served more than 2,500 people.

Sanford Health to host sports physical events for students

BEMIDJI – Sanford Health will host a sports physical night on Thursday, Aug. 1, and Thursday, Aug. 8, for middle and high school students.

High school athletes are encouraged to attend the Aug. 1 event to ensure a sports physical is completed prior to participation in practice, a release said.

The event starts at 5 p.m. at Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center. Each session will last two hours.

Sports physicals ensure student-athletes are fit and ready to perform on the court, field or track. They can also help detect any potential injuries before they happen.

Student-athletes are required to get an annual sports physical when participating in school-sanctioned sports and must have their physicals completed before the first day of practice for their sport, the release said.

The cost of a sports

physical is $60 and payable at registration. Walkins are welcome. The appointment will not be billed to insurance.

He moved to Grand Forks, N.D., in 1968, where he graduated from Red River High School in 1977. Compton completed a one-year welding program and worked in the oil fields for two years

before going to the University of North Dakota and graduating with a degree in industrial technology.

Compton taught IT for 32 years and coached football for 15 years. During his coaching career, he was involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He and his wife have been married for 38 years. They have two children and three grandchildren.

After Compton and his wife retired in 2022, they moved north of Bemidji and began attending First

Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society to hold summer events

BEMIDJI — The Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society will host a Boreal Book Club, Plein Air Painting class and a Mindful Yoga series this summer, at the Neilson Spearhead Center nature preserve, 48851 County 29.

• Plein Air Painting: Capturing the Northwoods Landscape will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Aug. 10. Instructor Gillian Bedford will lead participants in techniques for painting outside, using acrylics to capture the landscape. Bedford’s approach as a teacher is to offer simple techniques as tools and to encourage her students to find their own artistic voice, the release said. Attendees should bring several sheets of watercolor paper, a water bottle

chair if needed. Paint and palette, brushes, paper towels, clipboards and tape will be available. The cost is $30 per class or $90 for the series.

Mindful Yoga:

Stretch and Flow led by instructor Ann Gorman will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month through September, invite participants to engage their senses and relax in their practice while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of nature, the release said.

Participants are asked to dress in comfortable layers suited to the outside temperature the day of class and bring a water bottle. Yoga mats will be available or you can bring your own.

Weather permitting, classes will be held outdoors. The cost is $15 per class or $75 for the series.

Boreal Book Club will be held on the second to last Sunday of each month through October and will begin with a short hike followed by a discussion of the book of the month.

Books are selected with the goal of including Minnesota-specific topics, Indigenous voices, memoirs, humor and

Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for Aug. 10-11

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year. The next clinics are scheduled for Aug. 10 and 11.

Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.

Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.

BEMIDJI — The North Country Arts and Crafts Board of Directors invite people of all abilities and ages to register now for the 48th year of the North Country Arts & Crafts Workshop.

BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck Senior Center will serve morning coffee and treats and offer card games this summer, at the senior center, 24 First St. SE.

Bagley Senior Center offers weekly programming

BEMIDJI — Mount Zion and United Methodist Churches of Bemidji offer sit-down Community Table meals on Mondays through Thursdays.

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will offer an outdoor preschool program from

10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays through Aug. 26, at North Country Park, 1001 30th St. NW. This nature-based playtime will be held at the new natural playground. Participants will enjoy a few fun stories and then have time to play, a release said.
