Bookstore will host Minnesota author William Kent Krueger at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.
Krueger is a NYT Bestselling author of the Cork O’Connor series. His most recent works include “The River We Remember” and “Fox Creek.” His newest mystery is “Spirit Crossing: Cork O’Connor Mystery #20.”
In “Spirit Crossing,”
Cork’s grandson discovers the shallow grave of an Ojibwe woman in the hunt for a local politician’s missing daughter.
As a connection between the missing teenager and the Ojibwe woman is found, a realization is formed that Cork’s grandson may be the next victim, a release said.
“Krueger is one of those rare authors who combines intricately plotted, issue-oriented stories with mysticism and action,” the Library Journal of New York said in a release. “A must for fans of beautifully written crime fiction.”
He has been married to his wife for 50 years and currently lives in St. Paul.

Blackduck Senior Center to host lunch social during Backwoods Bash
BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck Senior Center will host a lunch social during the Backwoods Bash, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the center, 24 First St. SE.
Attendees can enjoy homemade food and visit with area friends in the air-conditioned center, a release said.
The cost is $10 for sloppy Joes, homemade pies with ice cream and a beverage.
This is a fundraiser to help maintain operating expenses for the center, the release said.

Backwoods Bash parade, which starts at noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Blackduck High School, 156 First St. NE.

Defensive Driving Course scheduled for Aug. 19
BEMIDJI — A Defensive Driving Course/ Refresher Course will be offered from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, through Zoom. The four-hour course is for drivers age 55 and older who want to receive a discount on their
insurance. The instructor for the classes will be retired Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Mike Flatley.
A recent change in the law regarding the Senior Driving Program says participants can now take the four-hour course for their initial course. The eight-hour beginner’s course is no longer a requirement, a release said.
Those who have already completed the beginner’s course can also take this course to continue receiving a discount on their insurance.

BEMIDJI — The 37th season of the Bemidji Area Church Musicians Summer Recital Series continues at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 21, at First Presbyterian Church, 501 Minnesota Ave NW.

Forest History Center to host ‘Real Horsepower Days’ Aug. 23-24
GRAND RAPIDS — The ForestHistory Center is set to host “Real Horsepower Days” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Aug. 24, at the History Center, 2609 County Road 76, in Grand Rapids. During the two-day
event, teams of draft horses and teamsters will hold demonstrations. Participants will be able to take short trolley rides, get an up-close look at these powerful and beautiful animals and learn about how teamsters work with them on a daily basis, a release said.
“Draft horses played a crucial role in Northern Minnesota’s logging camps of the 19th century, hauling logs through the woods and to river banks, where they were shipped around the world,” added the release. “Renowned for their beauty and strength, draft horses continue to work in a variety of ways throughout Minnesota, including at the Forest History Center.”
There is no additional cost to participate in Horsepower Days outside of regular site admission. Admission costs $12 for adults; $10 for seniors,
veterans, active military and college students; and $8 for children ages 5-17. Minnesota Historical Society members, children ages 4 and under, Blue Star families and Museums for All participants receive free admission.
For those who want more interactions with draft horses, the Center offers 90-minute, horsedrawn trolley tours every Wednesday through Saturday through Aug. 31, and on Fridays and Saturdays from Sept. 6 through Oct. 19.

the 48th year of the North Country Arts & Crafts Workshop. The three-day workshop consists of 30 high quality art and craft classes taught by local and regional artists. Participants can register for one, two or three days of classes and gourmet food.
The North Country Arts and Crafts Workshop will take place from Sept. 10-12 at the scenic Lesnoe Ozero Russian Village, northeast of Bemidji. Lodging is also available. Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5
BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times best-selling author, Emmy-winning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.
Berens was last in Bemidji at the Sanford Center in November 2022, where he performed to a soldout crowd with his humor and uniquely hilarious Midwest comedy, a release said.
He began his career working for MTV News’ Choose or Lose. In 2012, Tribune Media tapped him to host the comedic news show Nightcap. In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water” while reporting for KDAF, a television station in Dallas, Texas.
Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than
16 million views.
In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to view his content. He currently has over 2.6 million Facebook followers. After garnering millions of views, he’s toured the United States selling out venues within minutes.
In 2020, Berens paired up with Horseshoes and Hand Grenades alum Adam Greul to release the music/comedy album, “Unthawed.” The album, which is a mixture of bluegrass, country and Charlie’s comedy, hit number one on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and number six on the Bluegrass Comedy chart.
His first book, “The Midwest Survival Guide,” was released in November 2021 and immediately became a New York Times Best Seller, the release said.
