‘Smart Wars - Gaamiinigoowiziyang’ exhibit opens Sept. 3
BEMIDJI — Watermark Art Center is set to display Rory Wakemup’s exhibit, “Smart-WarsGaa-miinigoowiziyang (What We Were Given),” starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Watermark’s Miikanan Gallery.
The exhibit will feature costumes used for the production of Wakemup’s performance art piece, “Divest or Die: Smart Wars,” featured at the 2018 Twin Cities’ Northern Spark art festival.
The “Smart Wars” storyline is based on two warring families who must join together and defeat a common enemy in order to protect the resources humankind has been given and to create a harmonious existence on Earth for all species, a release
said.
Wakemup is a multimedia artist and member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. He holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison and was the recipient of the 2015 Chazen Museum Prize.
The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 30. A reception for Wakemup and associated activities will be announced later this fall.

open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, for the last Saturday of the summer season. The museum will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Tickets on sale for ‘Irresponsible Men Irresponsible Women’
The Bemidji Swashbuckler’s Club’s production of Jeremiah Liend’s play, “Irresponsible Men Irresponsible Women,” will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Headwaters Music and Arts, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.
“’Irresponsible Men Irresponsible Women’ examines social dynamics through a series of comedic vignettes,” a
release said. “It explores themes of personal freedom, societal pressure and complex human relationships.”
This is the premier production of Liend’s play, which was supported by a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council.
“The play, which marks Liend’s seventh submission for the Pulitzer Prize, is a comedic exploration of gender dynamics and societal expectations, featuring a fastpaced, irreverent narrative that promises to entertain and provoke thought,” explained the release.
In keeping with a commitment to accessibility, the play will feature integrated audio descriptions for blind audience members and open captioned dialogue projection for the deaf.
Due to the mature content of the play, admission is limited to ages 16 and up.

Friends of Lake Bemidji State Park to host pancake breakfast
BEMIDJI — Friends of Lake Bemidji State Park will host a Labor Day weekend pancake breakfast fundraiser from 8 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1,
at the dining hall in Lake Bemidji State Park, 3401 State Park Road NE. The breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, coffee, juice and milk. Participants are asked to bring their own utensils.

Headwaters Quilt Guild to host monthly meeting, paper piercing workshop
BEMIDJI — The Headwaters Quilt Guild of Bemidji will host its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at A Stitch in Time, 200 Paul Bunyan Drive S, Suite 2.
The guest for this month’s meeting will be Mike Ellingson, who is known for his series of quilt patterns.
Ellingson is the Minnesota Quilters 2017 Mystery Quilt creator and has had his quilts exhibited at the Iowa Quilt Museum and the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. He was honored as the Minnesota Quilter of the Year for 2020 and 2021. All are welcome to attend. There is a $10 fee for non-members.
The Guild will also host a paper piercing class
from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at A Stitch in Time.
Don will teach the class. With this technique, there is no paper to tear away, a release said.

Miss Northern Lakes scholarship pageant seeks contestants
BEMIDJI — The Miss Northern Lakes scholarship pageant is seeking female contestants ages 14-17 and 18-26, for the competition on Sunday, Sept. 15.
The deadline to register is Sept. 5. The venue will be determined after the registration deadline.
The competition will consist of a private interview, onstage question, talent, health and fitness, and evening gown portion, a release said. The winner of the Miss Northern Lakes title will receive a scholarship.
The winners of both the teen and miss categories will advance to the state competition to represent the community and have the chance to win more scholarships, become Miss Minnesota and advance to the Miss America pageant.

Held on the first Friday of most months, the Headwaters Open Mic offers a welcoming and supportive community for musicians and spoken-word performers. Businessmen’s Fellowship of America chapter is set to meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Beltrami Electric Conference Room, 4111 Technology Drive NW.

The keynote speaker will be Sen. Steve Green. Green’s testimony will describe the Lord’s presence in St. Paul, including the pastors and lay people regularly visiting Minnesota legislators.
Green was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012, where he served for 10 years. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2022 and is currently in his first four-year term.
He has been a Christian for 34 years and married to his wife Cindy for 45 years. They have six children and 15 grandchildren.
Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for Sept. 7-8
BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year. The next clinics are scheduled for Sept. 7 and 8. Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.
Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.
Remaining dates for this year’s clinics are:

Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.

National Grandparents Day open house set at Clearwater County History Center
SHEVLIN — The Clearwater County Historical Society will observe National Grandparents Day with an open house
from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the history center, 264 First St. National Grandparents Day started in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation making the Sunday after Labor Day “National Grandparents Day.”
According to a release, September was chosen for the holiday to signify the “autumn years.” Its purpose is to honor grandparents, give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
“The Clearwater County Historical Society encourages grandparents to bring their grandchildren to the museum and share their memories with them,” the release said. “Not a grandparent yet? Bring your grandparent or an older person to enjoy the museum.”
Admission is free. Root beer floats and other refreshments will be served.

Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5
BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times best-selling author, Emmy-winning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.
Berens was last in Bemidji at the Sanford Center in November 2022, where he performed to a soldout crowd with his humor and uniquely hilarious Midwest comedy, a release said. He began his career working for MTV News’ Choose or Lose. In 2012, Tribune Media tapped him to host the comedic news show Nightcap. In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water” while reporting for KDAF, a television station in Dallas, Texas.
Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than 16 million views.
In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to view
his content. He currently has over 2.6 million Facebook followers. After garnering millions of views, he’s toured the United States selling out venues within minutes.
In 2020, Berens paired up with Horseshoes and Hand Grenades alum Adam Greul to release the music/comedy album, “Unthawed.” The album, which is a mixture of bluegrass, country and Charlie’s comedy, hit number one on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and number six on the Bluegrass Comedy chart.
His first book, “The Midwest Survival Guide,” was released in November 2021 and immediately became a New York Times Best Seller, the release said.
Berens also hosts the Cripescast podcast where he interviews musicians, artists, comedians, creators and more to talk about their stories and
connections to the Midwest. Guests have included Jeff Foxworthy, Nate Bargatze and Roy Wood, Jr.

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami Area Service Collaborative will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 9. All meetings will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on select Wednesdays
throughout the year and are open to the public.
“For more than 20 years, the Beltrami Area Service Collaborative has successfully partnered with area stakeholders to plan, implement and sustain prevention and early intervention services for the children and families of Beltrami County,” The BASC website reads.
“BASC has been recognized as a leader in Minnesota’s Collaborative movement.”
