Sanford Health to host annual Walk to Remember Oct. 5
BEMIDJI — Sanford Health will host its annual Walk to Remember at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, 1300 Anne St. NW.
The community is invited to join the Sanford Parents Embracing Time After Loss program to remember all babies lost in early pregnancy, stillbirth, newborn death and SIDS.
The event is a time to reflect, share and remember children taken from this world too soon, a release said.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow the walk, including the planting of a remembrance tree donated by Hills Country Greenhouse.
There is no cost to attend. Attendees will receive a free T-shirt and a silent auction will also be held during the event. Proceeds from the walk will benefit the PETAL program, which provides mementos and support information to every parent who experiences the loss of a baby or infant within the Sanford Health of Northern Minnesota Region.

Bemidji Area FGBF set to meet Oct. 5
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship will meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, in the community room at First Baptist Church, 1555 Paul Bunyan Drive NW.
A light breakfast will be served and all are welcome to attend.
The keynote speaker will be Jack Frost. Frost will share his testimony
of knowing Jesus Christ as his personal savior and the central part religion has played in his life for 40 years, a release said.
Frost grew up in south Minneapolis and attended Roosevelt High School and Hope Lutheran Church. He spent summers at his grandfather’s farm working and selling eggs and produce to neighbors.
He was also in Boy Scouts and served in the U.S. Army. Following his time in the Army, he worked at and around the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport before moving to Bemidji in 1998 to purchase Joe’s Lodge.
During his time in the Bemidji area, Frost has served two terms on the Ten Lake Town Board and 14 years on the Beltrami County Board, the release said.
Frost and his wife Sherry will celebrate
their 40th wedding anniversary in November. They have four grown children and are expecting their 13th grandchild in February.
Watermark to host artist talk, closing reception for ‘Smart Wars’ exhibit
BEMIDJI — Watermark
Art Center’s closing reception for Rory Wakemup’s “Smart Wars: Gaamiinigoowiziyang — What We Were Given” exhibit has been rescheduled for noon on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Watermark, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
The exhibit is currently on display in Watermark’s Miikanan Gallery.
“Originally a performance art piece based on Star Wars, Wakemup wants to (use this exhibit to) help fans of Native culture to understand the difference between dehumanizing racism and what truly honors Natives,” a release said.
Recognized in the art world as an innovative thinker, Wakemup is fearless in bringing Indigenous concerns to light through his artwork and community activism. One can see the results of his vision in this exhibit.
Wakemup and community members will install a metal tipi sculpture on Watermark’s South Lawn beginning at noon, with an artist talk to follow. There is no charge to attend these events. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5
BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times best-selling author, Emmy-winning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive
NE.
Berens was last in Bemidji at the Sanford Center in November 2022, where he performed to a sold-out crowd with his humor and uniquely hilarious Midwest comedy, a release said.
He began his career working for MTV News’ Choose or Lose. In 2012, Tribune Media tapped him to host the comedic news show Nightcap. In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water” while reporting for KDAF, a television station in Dallas, Texas.
Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than 16 million views. In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to view his content. He currently has over 2.6 million Facebook followers. After garnering millions of views, he’s toured the United States selling out venues within minutes.
Berens also hosts the Cripescast podcast where he interviews musicians, artists, comedians, creators and more to talk about their stories and connections to the Midwest. Guests have included Jeff Foxworthy, Nate Bargatze and Roy Wood, Jr.

Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for Oct. 5-6
BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year. The next clinics are scheduled for Oct. 5 and 6.
Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care
services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.
Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.
The last dates for this year’s clinics are Nov. 2 and 3. Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.

Trinity Lutheran Church to hold meatball dinner

Bagley Senior Center to hold meatball dinner fundraiser
BAGLEY — The Bagley Senior Center will have a meatball dinner fundraiser with all the trimmings from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Bagley American Legion, 112 Main Ave. N.
The cost of the meal will be a free-will donation to raise money for a new roof for the center before the winter season.

Sanford Health to host 3D mobile mammography events
BEMIDJI
— The Sanford Health Foundation invites the Bagley and Bemidji communities to learn about the benefits of 3D mobile mammography on Monday, Oct. 7, at two Sanford Health locations.
A 3D mobile mammography truck will travel from Fargo and visit the Sanford Bagley Clinic, 1656 Central St. West, from 10 to 11 a.m.
The truck will then be stationed at the Sanford Joe Lueken Cancer Center, 1233 34th St. NW, in Bemidji, from noon to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be offered at both locations.
This new 3D mobile mammography unit will be the first-ever mobile mammography service to be offered in the Bemidji region, a release said.
According to the release, mobile mammography services will add more than 1,100 screenings each year, with appointments typically taking less than 25 minutes, eliminating the need for patients to take a day off work.
With community support, Sanford Health is launching the first phase of bringing 3D mammography technology to more women in northern Minnesota, saving more lives by October 2025, added the release.
This first phase for mobile mammography in the Bemidji region will include Walker, Bagley, Blackduck, Cass Lake and Park Rapids, with additional locations to be added later.
“While mammograms are the first line of defense for detecting breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages, research shows that many women forgo these essential screenings due to barriers such as proximity to a local health care facility, lack of transportation, cost and other factors,” the release said.

October Family Enrichment classes set at Mt. Zion Church
BEMIDJI — Family Enrichment classes focusing on acrylic painting and birch bark carving are scheduled this October at Mt. Zion Church, 414 Lincoln Ave.
A “Fall Birch Trees in Acrylics” class is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 10 and 24.
Instructor Tammy Montgomery-Henrickson will offer step-by-step instructions for painting birch trees in the fall.
Participants should plan to attend both sessions, as the second class is a continuation of the first.
A “Bark House Carving” class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
on Thursdays, Oct. 10 and 24. Bark House carving uses cottonwood bark and is a favorite as each carving is so individual, a release said. Attendees should be interested in Celtic/Gaelic bagpipe music and learning this storied instrument, a release said. Participants must have a hand size sufficient to cover the holes on a practice instrument, called a practice chanter. Attendees must obtain a practice chanter and tutor book to begin learning.
