Youth propels Beavers into new year
With Bitzer, the Fitzgeralds and others gone, new leaders emerge for BSU for 2018-19 BEMIDJI — There’s always turnover in college hockey. Players graduate, of course. But the 2018-19 season will see more turnover than usual for the Bemidji State men’s hockey team. Nine newcomers — six forwards, two defensemen and a goaltender — will don Beaver green and white for the first time. That’s just the nature of the game, said head coach Tom Serratore. “It happens every four years when you have a new cycle of players,” said Serratore, who enters his 18th season behind the bench. This year’s roster contains 17 underclassmen and 10 upperclassmen. “Last year we were 14 and 14,” Serratore said. “Definitely different. It’s like anything, we just have to adjust to basically having a new team.” Gone are mainstays such as Michael Bitzer, the Fitzgerald triplets of Gerry, Leo and Myles, leading scorer Kyle Bauman, NHL signee Zach Whitecloud and others. “It seemed like the
Fitzgeralds and Bitzer have been around for like 12 years,” Serratore said. “They’ve had neverending eligibility. We realize it’s only been four years, but they played a lot of key minutes, as did Kyle Bauman and Jordan Heller.” Bitzer, an All-American goalie and Hobey Baker finalist, will be hard to replace in net after playing 138 games for the Beavers. Three netminders will contend to succeed him — junior Jack Burgart, sophomore Henry Johnson and Zach Driscoll, a sophomore transfer from St. Cloud State. “It’s up to these guys to battle through it and we want somebody to obviously emerge,” Serratore said. “If we have a couple guys emerge, that’s fine as well. We just want to make sure we can continue having good goaltending because that’s the backbone of anybody’s team.” As for the offense, the Beavers may have lost key guys up top, but the team returns 66 of its 103 goals from last season, including three of its four leading goalscorers: senior

to be strong up the middle, and when you have strong centermen, it obviously helps your team in a number of ways.” The team’s youthful makeup resulted in five players being named captain. Senior defensemen Baudry and Dillon Eichstadt will serve as cocaptains, while Dickman, junior forward Adam Brady and junior defenseman Tommy Muck will be alternate captains. With all but two defensemen returning, the blue line looks to be the area with the fewest question marks. “Our strength on paper is no question our defensive corps,” Serratore said. “We’ve got a veteran corps back, and I think if you’re going to be experienced in one particular position, it’s probably a good area to be experienced in.” The young class will be tested right off the bat this weekend in a homeand-home with No. 11 North Dakota to open the
regular season. From all indications so far, the Beavers have gelled in training camp. “Our older guys have mixed well with the younger guys,” said Eichstadt, a Bemidji native. “Honestly, I’m excited for the opportunity that we have this year because, like I said, the camaraderie has been really good.” “You see that many freshmen coming in, and I think what it presents is opportunity,” said Baudry. “Whenever there’s a challenge, we see it as opportunity and we’re looking forward to that.” The newcomers are bound to see plenty of playing time in this upcoming campaign. But the team’s veterans will also get their time to shine. “It’s an exciting challenge, not only for the incoming freshmen, because there’s obviously some minutes to be played by them,” Serratore said, “but it’s also I think encouraging for a lot of the upperclassmen because they know it’s their time.”

Beavers catch their breath after opening two weeks By Austin Monteith amonteith @bemidjipioneer.com BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State women’s hockey team isn’t going to let a slow start derail its hopes of returning to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Faceoff. The Beavers may have started the season 0-4-0, but the team remembers its recovery from a 1-7-1 start last year, advancing all the way to their first Final Faceoff appearance since 2014-15. A challenging schedule has not done BSU any favors, facing defending champion and top-ranked Clarkson to open the season before journeying east to meet a strong Providence team. “(I’m) disappointed to be sitting here 0-4 today,” head coach Jim Scanlan said this week, “but in evaluating the performance and not the scoreboard, there’s certainly been a lot of posi-
tives.” Players are adjusting to new roles and need time to get used to that, Scanlan said while noting the freshmen have come along well. Goalscoring has not been an issue, but the Beavers have already allowed 18 goals through four games. “The attitude, of course, in the group has been outstanding,” Scanlan said. “We’re just giving up too many goals. That’s a combination of a lot of factors. It’s not just goaltending. It’s a team thing where we can just tighten up.” “You have a couple breakdowns in a game like these past couple weekends here and it’s cost us,” said sophomore defenseman Tina Kampa. “No matter what kind of team we’re playing, there’s a lot of great teams out there and they’re going to make us pay for it.” The Beavers have the

benefit of a weekend off before beginning WCHA play Oct. 19-20 at No. 4 Minnesota Duluth, though they’re still raring to get back on the ice. “Bye weeks are obviously nice to give your body a break,” said senior forward Emily Bergland, “but right now I think after getting swept twice we definitely want to play and win a couple games here. But we obviously have some things to work on, so I think this will be a good time to do that.”
Beavers return strong class
The Beavers did not lose many pieces from their squad of a year ago. Junior forward Haley Mack was the Beavers’ leading scorer last season as a sophomore, finishPioneer file photo ing with 25 points (11g14a) on a balanced attack. two of their three leading goalscorers — Mack and Bergland. Redshirt sophomore Lauren Bench and sophomore Kerigan Dowhy will lead the way in goal after starting a combined 25 games last year. “We’ve got a real good group coming back,” Scanlan said. “I think the core of our team is made up predominantly of juniors and sophomores, and all of those players certainly played big roles in our team last year. You have the leadership and the experience of our three seniors, and then the enthusiasm that the freshmen always bring in.” Five freshmen will join the team — forwards Claudia Verkerke, Ellie Moser and Graysen Myers; defenseman Lexi Cheveldayoff; and goalie Lexi Baker. Redshirt freshman defenseman Abby Ecker will also suit up after sitting out last season.

“They’re working hard to be great teammates,” Scanlan said of the freshmen. “It’s always going to be an adjustment to come into this level. I’ve been impressed. First of all, their work ethic has been outstanding. It’s just finding their niche in how things work.” Senior defenseman Melissa Hunt will captain the Beavers, along with assistant captains Bergland and junior forward Kiki Radke. Forward Sylvia Marolt is the only other senior on the young squad. “There’s a lot of honor in that role, and I’m just really thankful for my team,” Hunt said of wearing the “C” on her sweater. “They were definitely helping me be a leader by them all being leaders.” Last season’s sizable freshmen class of nine has matured an extra year and is looking to making an even larger impact. “Certainly they came in pretty heralded and I thought they lived up to it,” Scanlan said. “They’ve definitely stepped up their game,”
Hunt said. “Every single one of them has. They’ve all been working hard over the summer and it definitely shows. I think they’ll make a pretty big difference this year for us.” Now-sophomores forward Clair DeGeorge and defenseman Mak Langei have come a long way in the last 12 months. The two each made the WCHA All-Rookie Team, and DeGeorge was also an AllWCHA Third Team selection. After going 16-19-3 last season and helping the Beavers advance to the Final Faceoff, DeGeorge and her class may have what it takes to push BSU even farther in 2018-19. “You have to think a lot faster, which makes the game faster,” DeGeorge said on jumping to the collegiate level. “So it’s nice being able to play into that for a year, and it should obviously be a lot easier for myself and the rest of the sophomores this year to get into the game.”
