Greetings from the CE DIRECTOR
It’s that time again Bemidji! Time for back to school and new learning opportunities. We have an entire brochure filled with offerings I think you are really going to enjoy. Some that have been around for awhile and plenty of new ones to choose from.
I always feel like fall is a fresh start to begin anew. So, if you have been thinking of trying a new fitness class, an online learning opportunity or even getting some extra training in a professional development area…now is your chance! Go for it!
A few of the classes I would like to put in the spotlight are our fitness classes. We offer such a wide variety of classes and some very unique ones such as our Yamuna classes. If you have never tried them I encourage you to do so. I personally have taken the ball rolling class and I loved it! Your body will thank you for it later!
Another set of classes that we have a wide variety of is our online offerings which are great for folks that have to squeeze in their learning opportunities when it fits into their schedule. People are busy and we often want to take a class but it is on the wrong day or time. With online learning options you can do the class when it fits into your schedule which is nice. I think you will find something you like!
Thank you for checking out Bemidji Community Education’s fall and winter offerings! In the following pages and on our website you will find programs and services for all ages. We offer a wide variety of programs for everyone! Be sure to check out our aquatics, youth, early learning and school age child care offerings online at www. bemidjicommunityed.com. We deliver quality programs at affordable prices. Please browse our various offerings. If you don’t see what you are looking for, let us know. We strive to meet all the needs of our community. So, we welcome all programming suggestions and feedback. We look forward to seeing you in our programs!
BE SURE TO SUPPLY ACTIVE EMAIL. Friendly reminder! Check your email and voicemail inbox for messages from Community Ed regarding program updates.

What is ECFE?
Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten enrollment. ECFE is based on the idea that the family provides a child’s first and most important learning environment, and parents are a child’s first and most significant teachers. ECFE works to strengthen families and enhance the ability of all parents to provide the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their children.
WHAT HAPPENS IN ECFE?
ECFE programs are tailored locally to meet the needs of families in each specific community. Most programs contain the following components:
• parent discussion groups,
• play and learning activities for children,
• parent-child activities,
• special events for the entire family,
• home visits,
• early screening for potential children’s health and developmental concerns,
• community resource information for families and young children, and
• libraries of parenting books for adults, and children’s books.
WHO PARTICIPATES IN ECFE?
Parents and children participate together. Participation is voluntary. ECFE is committed to accessibility for everyone, so fees are based on a sliding fee scale or are waived for families unable to pay. It is the goal of ECFE to serve a representative cross-section of families with young children in each community. All families have different needs. Programs offer sessions with specific topics to meet these individual needs.
WHY START AT BIRTH?
Brain research confirms the first three years are an extremely critical period in a child’s development. This is especially true in the areas of language, social skills and the foundation of intelligence. An infant’s daily interactions with caregivers actually determine the structure of some areas of the brain itself. Getting involved in ECFE can help parents be better equipped to deal with the challenges of caring for these rapidly developing infants and toddlers.
WHY INVOLVE PARENTS?
Research shows that early childhood programs involving parents and children are more effective than programs focusing exclusively on children. Educators and psychologists agree that it is vital for early childhood programs to assist parents in their role as primary educators of their children. Involvement prior to kindergarten encourages parents to play an active role in their children’s learning throughout their entire education. Children whose parents are involved in their education have been shown to be more successful in school.
