FINDING DESIGN IDEAS FOR YOUR REMODELING PROJECT Headwaters Builders Association You want to change the look and feel of your house, but you also want your remodeling job to look fresh for a number of years and complement the existing features of your home. How do you choose the right project and design for you and your family? First, take your family’s lifestyle into account when selecting an area of your home to remodel. For example, if you get a lot of traffic through the house, consider hardwood floors. Families who frequently entertain in the kitchen may want to expand the room and add an island or some comfortable chairs. If your bathroom is the place where you escape the world, add a whirlpool tub or a deluxe shower. After you’ve chosen an area of your home to remodel, the wide array of project options can be both dazzling and intimidating. To get started, consult the resources below, which can give you specific ideas on how to turn your house into

the dream home you’ve always wanted. TV Shows: There are an increasing number of shows and channels focused on decorating and simple home improvement projects to more complex remodels or home makeovers. For example, HGTV features projects that evolve from start to finish on shows like “Buying and Selling” and “Curb Appeal”; check your local television guide for listings. Magazines: Magazines that cater to home improvement, lifestyle and remodeling can be an excellent source of ideas. Page through publications such as Dwell, Home, House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, Coastal Living, Food and Wine, Country Living, Ladies’ Home Journal and Good Housekeeping to identify projects and materials that might work in your home. Additionally, you can request a wide range of free or inexpensive literature by completing the mail-in coupons inserted in such publications.

Sketches and Floor Plans: No two remodeling projects are the same, but you can gain some insight into how another homeowner solved a space problem by carefully studying sketches and floor plans. If, like most people, you are easily confused by plans and drawings, imagine yourself in the middle of the room or space on the plan. Books: Browse a bookstore with a well-stocked home improvement section, but beware of books telling you to be your own remodeling contractor. Most remodeling projects call for a level of skill and work hours beyond those stated in these books. The job of a professional remodeler requires experience and competence in a wide range of disciplines, and unless you are highly skilled and licensed in all the trades, you can quickly get in over your head. Newspapers: Most newspapers publish regular sections devoted to real estate, home design and

INSIDER HINTS FOR DESIGN ON A BUDGET Headwaters Builders Association Don’t have a big budget but want to make some big design changes to your home? Well-designed rooms don’t always have to come with a huge price tag; in fact, designing on a budget may be easier than you think. Many times, by changing small elements, you can give a room an entirely new personality. Sometimes adding a few colorful pillows or picking up a paintbrush is all you need to do to make your room look like something out of the pages of a magazine. The Power of Paint One of the most common fixes for a boring room is color. “Color is easy to do and inexpensive,” says Kathy Browning, owner of Design Consultants, a design firm in Virginia Beach, Va. Updating the color of just one wall in any room will give it an entirely new feel. Painting, when

own advice when it comes to color, particularly if you are looking at the kitchen. “You can never go wrong with neutrals, but color is hot now,” Edwards says. “Not necessarily vibrant colors — although for the right space, they can be fabulous — but think along the lines of buttery yellows, soft sage greens and nearly neutral blues.” Accessories Pack a Punch Adding accents to pieces you already own can also make a large difference. For instance, if your couch is not as exciting as it once was, try throwing a few fun accent pillows on it. Remember, throws and cushions, when selected as accents, can really bring new life to a tired piece of approached correctly, can make a room feel cozier colors open up a space, furniture. be an enjoyable experi- and more inviting. while deep, darker colors “The use of pillows, ence with instant rewards. Using the same frames but changing the images can easily create a new theme or mood, and combining several different frames in different finishes and sizes can achieve different looks. Love Your Lighting Often overlooked but strikingly effective, updated lighting can work wonders. “Lighting will dramatically change the mood of a room,” Warnock says. Try installing a new fixture or simply swapping out the shades on current fixtures. Installing dimmer switches is another simple change that can transform any room. What to do when a project stalls Metro Creative Services Upon embarking on a home improvement project, homeowners who have never before lived through such undertakings are often told to expect their projects to take more time than initial estimates suggested. Unforeseen complications can compromise project timelines, and some homeowners may find their projects stuck in neutral. Stalled projects can make life at home difficult, and homeowners may feel helpless with regard to getting a project back on course. But there are ways for homeowners to get stalled projects back on course. · Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such

unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road. · Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck

in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you. · Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors

for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire con-

tractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own. · Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when

projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time. Stalled home improvement projects can be a nightmare. But homeowners can address such delays in various ways to get projects back on track.

Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

PROTECT OUTSIDE

Drain birdbaths, clean out downspouts and remove water from other items where water can freeze and cause damage. Inspect roofing prior to the snowy season, but stay off roofs during freezing weather. Remove snow shovels and other winter gear from storage and make sure the items are easily accessible during snowstorms. Winter’s bite can be severe. Homeowners can protect themselves and their properties when the freeze sets in.

When it comes to kitchen design, the Bemidji area is very fortunate to have a true expert. Cabinet Corner’s George Kamrowski is an award winning cabinet and furniture designer that has designed hundreds of kitchens for clients across the region. He started by helping his father with remodels and has since built and designed furniture pieces such as dining room sets and drawing tables made completely out of wood. He has more than 40 years experience in the cabinet and furniture industry and has spent the last 28 years at Cabinet Corner. In that time, George has developed a niche of designing premium kitchens for upscale homes. In 2013 George was awarded a “Top Ten Kitchen Display” award from Marquis Fine Cabinetry for his design of Cabinet Corner’s Cuisine Center display. In 2008 he won a Log Home Design Award for “Most Creative Kitchen.” This design was described by Log Home Design Magazine as, “as close to perfect as we’ve seen.” It featured an L-shaped perimeter, handy prep island, a separate dining island, and a gourmet-sized pantry. George believes that relationships are extremely important in the cabinet business. He credits great contractors for executing his designs in the client’s home. He has developed a network of contractors, interior designers, and clients that know they can count on him and Cabinet Corner to deliver beautiful, functional, and fabulous kitchen designs. The Foundation of Design

F

looring is essential to the overall aesthetic appeal of your home. When walking into a home, one of the first things that sets the tone is the flooring. With so many options to choose from it can be an intimidating start, but once you have determined the foundation of your design it’s amazing how the rest seems to fall into place. The amount of flooring options available grows every year along with the quality and durability. No longer are the days of only sheet vinyl and laminate. We know that it is difficult to make flooring decisions as well as tie everything together with swatches and samples. That’s why I always suggest that you start with a consultation. Here at Cabinet Corner, we offer free consultations because it’s important to us to spend the time to learn about your personal style and the budget for your project. Whether you already have a complete design idea or simply a Pinterest board, we can bring your ideas together to create your ultimate vision. In addition to flooring for any room, my background includes designing custom ALISA VANDYKE KITCHEN & FLOORING DESIGN SPECIALIST tile showers. hen many people think of cabinet design, their mind is immediately engulfed with visions of kitchen cabinets. Pantry cabinets, lazy susans, and waste pull outs are what the common homeowner think about when at the mention of cabinet design. However, Cabinet Corner’s award winning designer, Taryn Klovstad, likes to remind people that there are so many more things to consider. While building a new home can be an overwhelming task for any person, it certainly doesn’t have to be. Trying to visualize what the new home’s interior could look like may seem like a staggering task. That is where working with an expert designer from Cabinet Corner, like Taryn, can help. “My job is to help the homeowner feel at ease and smooth the process,” Taryn explains. She goes on to say “I specialize in whole house projects.” This includes cabinets, countertops, backsplashes, hardware, floor coverings, and tile showers. “I strive to make the homeowner at ease from the very initial meeting, knowing that I will guide him or her throughout the entire process.” The design process TARYN KLOVSTAD KITCHEN & FLOORING DESIGN SPECIALIST includes many important steps and details. That is CABINET CORNER OF BEMIDJI why Taryn says that it is crucial to be attentive to the homeowner’s needs and desires. The process usually starts at Cabinet Corner’s inviting showroom, where the first of many design meetings takes place. Taryn will then travel to job sites armed with an extensive set of samples to help coordinate colors. She continues with multiple job site visits until the project is complete to ensure everything goes as smooth as possible. “Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction,” Taryn proudly asserts. A recent successful example of this was a home built by Bemidji’s Frenzel Construction Inc. for Ryan and Maria Sweeney. This home also shows how Cabinet Corner can create designs, not just for kitchens and bathrooms, but also laundry built-ins. Taryn also designed an entryway boot bench, which is ideal for families and their busy lifestyles. The kitchen design features a white perimeter and an antiqued island with a farmhouse sink, providing a charming and rustic feel to the kitchen. The flooring throughout the home is a luxury vinyl planking which provide a durable, water resistant natural wood look. If you are looking to build a new home or remodel your current one, come and see Taryn or any of the other designers at Cabinet Corner. Cabinet Corner is a full service design center which prides itself on taking your home’s interior from paper to your dream home. Family owned Cabinet Corner is dedicated to delivering the highest quality designs and kitchens to clients throughout northern Minnesota.

remodeling. Also, twice a year — usually in the spring and fall — many papers print special home improvement supplements. Each of these sections contains timely articles and useful advertisements on remodeling, home improvement, repair and maintenance. Friends, Family and Neighbors: Do you know someone who has recently remodeled their home in a style you admire? He or she may still have product manuals, magazines and other helpful information you can borrow, as well as practical advice drawn from his or her own experience. Remodeling Professionals: One of the advantages of choosing a remodeler

early is gaining access to an extensive library of resources prior to starting a project. Once you’ve chosen a contractor, he or she usually can offer you a wide variety of materials, including product manuals, magazines, brochures and blueprints. Manufacturers and Suppliers: The most

obvious place to find information about new products and how to use them is on manufacturers’ Web sites and in magazine ads. Lumberyards, hardware stores and other suppliers also can be valuable sources of information. Do you know what your water heater does while you sleep? If the answer is “no,” you may be losing out on a valuable opportunity to improve your home’s energy efficiency. A new electric thermal storage water heater on Beltrami Electric Cooperative’s off-peak program takes advantage of lower energy costs during overnight hours, while still providing the reliable hot water you need at all times. Here’s how it works: The water heater draws electricity during low energy demand times when prices are less expensive. It stores the hot water in a specially-insulated tank, which allows it to be temporarily turned off during high energy demand times – both saving energy and money.

Great rebates are available for installation of an electric thermal storage water heater. Contact Beltrami Electric Cooperative today to learn more! Better efficiency. Better value. Relaxing at a spa each week may be a luxury reserved for celebrities and socialites. For many people, a day spa is a treat enjoyed on special occasions or while on vacation. However, home bathrooms can be designed to provide the same types of amenities offered at day spas right in the comfort of one’s home. The American Psychological Association says that money, work and the future of the country are particularly strong stressors today. Eighty percent of workers feel stress on the job and learning how to manage stress is a top concern, according to the American Institute of Stress. Creating a Zenlike retreat at home can help alleviate stress and improve health. Homeowners whose renovation plans include turning a bathroom into a spa oasis will need to choose which features they desire most. These suggestions can spur on more ideas to create the ideal retreat. · Soaker bathtub: There’s something to

be said about a luxurious soak in a tub. Tubs come in different sizes and shapes, like the highly recognizable clawfoot tub and other freestanding units. These types of tubs, as well as corner tubs, can offer deep-seated luxury by way of a relaxing and restorative soak. Pair with scented bath bombs or salts for a true spa experience. · Steam shower: Steam showers are self-enclosed units that feature generators that deliver steam through steam heads. The steam fills the space and can help a person unwind before a refreshing shower or bath. According to the retailer Modern Bathroom®, modern steam showers come with digital controls, which makes it easy for users to activate the shower, adjust the length of time that the shower will operate and adjust temperature controls. Extra features like music, mood lighting and aromatherapy can be included as well. · Heated floors: Heated floors provide the utmost in comfort when stepping

out of the bath or shower. They can warm the room and make using the space more comfortable in cold weather. · Vessel sinks: A vessel sink typically features a bowl or basin that looks like it was placed on top of the vanity. Vessel sinks can elevate the ambiance in spa bathrooms. · Plush towels and robes: In addition to fixtures and other functional components of the bath, linens are key. Soft-spun Egyptian or Turkish cotton towels and robes are a must-have luxury for the full spa experience. · Comfortable seat: A bench or chair nestled by a bathroom window is the perfect spot for pedicures or catching up on some light reading. · Natural light: Skylights or privacy-ensuring windows are a must to create a relaxing space close to nature. A spa bathroom at home is within reach. With a few touches, any bathroom can be transformed into a luxurious oasis.

Design a more functional pantry Metro Creative Services Many homeowners wish they had more storage space, and kitchens are one area where people seemingly can always use more storage. Despite a desire for more kitchen space, until recently, kitchen pantries fell out of favor. Builders and architects may have thought that close proximity to supermarkets as well as multi-use cabinets in kitchens would offset the need for pantries. But according to a recent survey from the National Association of Home Builders, a kitchen pantry is the most desirable kitchen feature for buyers in the market for a new home. According to a 2016 survey from ReportLinker, 98 percent of Americans say cooking at home is their preferred way to prepare a meal. And despite the wide array of restaurants, prepared meals and fast food options nearby, more than one-third of people cook at home daily, with nearly 50 percent cooking between three and six days a week. In order to accommodate for spending more time in the kitchen, homeowners are directing additional attention to kitchen preparation and storage fea-

tures. In fact, one recent trend in kitchen renovations is creating customdesigned pantries.

LOCATE THE APPROPRIATE SPACE

Ideally, pantries should be in or adjacent to the kitchen. But not every home layout allows for this setup. Some homeowners need to move storage pantries into the garage, the basement or a mud/laundry room. Various factors should be considered before placing a pantry outside a kitchen. What is the climate? Will food spoil? Is there a possibility that vermin or insects can infiltrate the room and access food? These factors will dictate whether to have closed cabinets, airtight bins or open shelves or if other modifications must be made to the room prior to building.

CHOOSE THE TYPE OF PANTRY

Accessibility is essential in a pantry. Everything should be easily reached and grabbed as needed without having to move too many things. Ideally, foods should be arranged in a single layer so that all items can be viewed at a glance. Shelves of various depths and heights can accommodate items of different sizes. Adjust-

able shelves are ideal because they can be modified as foods change. Sliding drawers can improve reach in cabinets. In smaller spaces, French door-style reachin cabinets are convenient and flexible. In complete kitchen remodels or new constructions, walk-in pantries offer the most space and flexibility. Must-have features Pantries serve different functions in different homes. For the bulk shopper, a pantry with plenty of room for large items will be needed. Lighting can be beneficial in all pantries. Lights can improve visibility when trying to locate items. Others prefer an outlet for charging handheld vacuums or other small appliances. Counter space in the pantry enables homeowners to unload groceries directly onto pantry shelves. For pantries located outside of the kitchen, built-in freezers can maximize storage possibilities, especially for those who freeze-and-eat after bulk shopping ventures. Pantries are popular features that homeowners can customize depending on their storage needs and the amount of time they spend in their kitchens. 001714192r1

Signs it is time for new windows Metro Creative Services Windows help regulate the temperature in a home, let in natural light and keep insects, weather and outdoor elements outside where they belong. The right windows also can add value to a property by providing aesthetic appeal and increasing curb appeal. Although homeowners can typically get many years out of their homes’ windows, ultimately windows will need to be replaced. Homes that are more than 20 years old and still have their original windows could be due for an upgrade. Aluminum- or wood-framed windows also may be ripe for changing. Here are some signs that it’s time to replace windows, cour-

tesy of Good Housekeeping, Centra® and the real estate website Redfin. · Drafty feel in the home: Window frames can begin to shrink as they age, allowing air to flow from the outdoors in and vice versa. Homeowners may notice drafts when standing near windows or hear whistling on notably windy days. · Rising energy bills: If energy bills are inexplicably on the rise, then old windows could be to blame. Aging, drafty windows can make it necessary to run HVAC systems more often and at higher or lower temperatures in order to keep homes comfortable. · Windows are difficult to open or close: Homeowners may get used to

the quirks of their windows, but those that are difficult to open or close may require replacement. In addition, if windows need to be propped open, it’s time to replace them. · Water infiltration: Warping or decaying window frames can make it easy for rain or snow to get into the home. Wood frames are particularly prone to moisture decay. If frames are warping or allowing water into the home, it’s time for an upgrade. · Condensation on windows: Fog or condensation buildup on windows can occur if the seal between panes is broken. In this instance, replacement windows are necessary.
