About this publication The Bemidji Pioneer is proud to feature the creative work of Bemidji area students in our “Future Designers of Bemidji” publication. We want to thank the classes that took part in this project, and we hope they enjoyed learning about marketing while helping many local businesses connect with potential customers. Congratulations to the students whose work was chosen for publication, and thank you to all of the others who took part in the project. Marketing consultants from the Pioneer helped teach students about effective artwork and messages. Thanks also to the businesses that saw the value of spreading those
messages with the help of artistic young people in the community. We hope readers will take time to read the advertisements and patronize the businesses that made “Future Designers” possible. It’s all part of the Pioneer’s Newspaper in Education program, which helps teachers bring real-world applications to their classroom instruction, using the daily newspaper as an ever-changing textbook. NIE is a cooperative effort of newspapers working with local schools to encourage the use of the newspaper as an educational tool to promote literacy and civic responsibility. Through this program, the Pioneer provides newspapers to educators and students. Dennis Doeden, Publisher

Strategies to motivate students to be more physically active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts
to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. · Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be
more likely to get off the couch. · Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen. · Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even
exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. · Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Ways to use newspapers in the classroom Metro Creative Services Today’s students have numerous devices at their disposal that can make learning more fun. Teachers may rely on such devices to engage students, but one more traditional teaching tool can still be an asset in the classroom. The following are a handful of ways for teachers to incorporate newspapers into their lesson plans besides the lesson of graphic design as showcased in this publication. USE NEWSPAPERS TO TEACH ENGINEERING. Create a tower building contest using only newspapers. The highest tower wins. USE NEWSPAPERS TO TEACH VOCABULARY. Perhaps no resource is more valuable than newspapers
when teaching vocabulary. Assign each student a story or stories from the newspaper, instructing them to underline or jot down between five and 10 words they are unfamiliar with as they read. Once they have finished reading their assigned articles, students can then look up and write down the meaning of each word, ultimately handing in their list of words and/ or sharing those words and their meanings with their classmates. USE NEWSPAPERS TO TEACH PERSONAL BUDGETING. Newspapers offer many forms of advertising along with specials, deals, and promotions. Teach students the importance of spending their earned money wisely and how to look for ways to save on monthly purchases.

USE NEWSPAPERS TO TEACH MATHEMATICS. While newspapers are often touted as great tools to teach reading comprehension and vocabulary, they also can be used to teach math lessons. For example, newspaper classified sections typically list dozens, if not hundreds, of items for sale. Assign each student 10 vehicles listed in the classified section and ask them to calculate the average asking prices of these vehicles. Another potential lesson is to ask kids to determine advertising costs by multiplying the columns times length of ad and assign a rate “per column inch”. USE NEWSPAPERS TO TEACH CURRENT EVENTS. The world is an interesting place, and
newspapers are great resources for people looking to keep up with all that is going on in the world. While current events can sometimes be confusing for young students, newspaper reporters aim to convey complicated topics in ways that readers of all ages and backgrounds can understand. By assigning newspaper articles as part of their students’ current events assignments, teachers can help students gain a better understanding of what’s going on in their community. While newspapers may have changed considerably over the last several years, they still make great teaching tools that can benefit instructors and students alike.
