A student’s guide to living in Bemidji Matthew Liedke mliedke@bemidjipioneer.com Moving to a new city is an exciting experience, but before one goes out on the town, it’s important to have the basics covered, both in and out of the house. For those whose top priority is getting the internet and cable hooked up, there are two main choices. One is Bemidji-based Paul Bunyan Communications. The cooperative offers Internet, TV and phone services and can be reached at (218) 444-1234. The other is Midco, a company headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D., which can be reached at (800) 888-1300. In order to power those devices, new residents of Bemidji also have a few providers to choose from. Local electric providers include Otter Tail Power, which can be reached at (218) 751-3120 and Beltrami
Electric Cooperative Inc, available at (218) 444-2540. For garbage services, Bemidji utilizes the company Waste Management and also has a solid waste transfer station located at 751 Industrial Drive SE. For details, call (218) 7511668. On the flip side of home services, some key places and resources outside a person’s residence include Bemidji City Hall, the Beltrami County Administration Building and the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce. Located at 317 Fourth St. NW, City Hall is the place where citizens can see the Bemidji City Council meet and is also the location to pay off parking tickets. Not too far away is the Beltrami County Administration Building at 701 Minnesota Ave. NW, which houses offices such as the Highway Department and Health and Human Services.

To contact City Hall, call (218) 759-3560 and to get in touch with county personnel, call (218) 333-8468. For nonemergency services from law enforcement such as the Bemidji Police Department and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office, call (218) 333-9111. For information on what the city has to offer in recreation and entertainment, stop by the Tourist Information Center at 300 Bemidji Ave., which houses an informational section and is in the shadow of the famous Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues. Further details from the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce are available by calling (218) 444-3541. To get around to these downtown locations, as well as places like the Paul Bunyan Mall, Bemidji residents have a few transport services to choose from. For example, there are two taxi companies, Bemidji

Cab, (218) 759-1368 and 1st City Taxi (218) 444-8294. The other main transport for residents is Paul Bunyan Transit, which offers dial-aride services at a cost of $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children. The company can be reached by calling (218) 7518765. The city of Bemidji also has resources if one is looking to travel across the state of Minnesota and beyond. One example is the Bemidji Bus Line, a motor coach company that transports people to locations in both the United States and Canada. Those interested can request a quote by calling (218) 751-5311. Another example is the Bemidji Regional Airport located at 3824 Moberg Drive NW, which offers round-trip flights to and from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport through Delta Airlines. Charter flights are also avail-
able at the airport thanks to Bemidji Aviation, which provides fuel, maintenance, hangar rental, plane rental and more. Also housed at the facility are a few rental car options such as Enterprise, Hertz, Alamo and National Car. For more airport information, call (218) 444-2438. One of the largest places Bemidji residents should know when they move opened its doors just a few years ago. That place is the Sanford Center, a 193,000 square-foot facility. Home of the Bemidji State University Beavers hockey team, the Sanford Center has an arena capacity of 4,373, 25 private suites and an attached convention center with three ballrooms. The facility originally broke ground in 2009 and opened in 2010. Besides hockey games, the building is also used for other types of events such as concerts.

SOME FACTS ABOUT BEMIDJI WHERE IS BEMIDJI LOCATED?
• 90 miles south of Rainy River, Ontario • 112 miles southwest of Fort Frances, Ontario on US Highway 71 • 113 miles east of Grand Forks on US Highway 2 • 143 miles west of Duluth on US Highway 2 • 211 miles northwest of Minneapolis
WHAT DOES “BEMIDJI” MEAN?
Bemidji is derived from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) phrase ‘Bay-me-ji-gamaug’ meaning “flowing through or across,” designating the course of the Mississippi River through Lake Bemidji.
HOW BIG IS LAKE BEMIDJI? Lake Bemidji has 14.8 miles of shoreline, covers 6,420 acres and is 76 feet at its deepest point.
HOW WAS LAKE BEMIDJI FORMED?
Local legend claims the lake is Paul Bunyan’s footprint; however geologists claim it was formed from glacial activity. The Mississippi River flows through the southern portion. The power dam downstream helps control the water level.
WHERE IS THE HEADWATERS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER?
31 miles southwest of Bemidji on US Highway 71. The headwaters is located in Itasca State Park.
HOW TALL IS PAUL BUNYAN AND HOW OLD IS HE?
Paul is 18 feet tall. The statue was constructed in 1937.
WHEN DOES LAKE BEMIDJI FREEZE OVER?
The average date is December 5. The average date of ice-out
is April 26.
WHEN DO THE LEAVES TURN COLOR? Average peak season for fall colors is the week of September 22.
WHAT IS THE POPULATION OF THE CITY?
15,366, according to the 2017 estimate. But that number can be deceiving, because so many people live in nearby townships and still consider Bemidji home. According to the 2010 census, the populations of the six adjacent townships (Eckles, Northern, Turtle River, Grant Valley, Bemidji and Frohn) and the city of Wilton totaled 14,058. Add that to the city of Bemidji and you get nearly 30,000. Bemidji is a regional hub. According to the most recent ESRI Community Profile, the population within a 15-mile radius of Bemidji was 39,396; within a 30-mile radius it was 62,885.

Singers span the years from young adults to retired persons. It is an auditioned choir, so knowledge of vocal health, languages and vocal literature is helpful. Note reading and a good ear are a requirement. The Chorale was started in 1979 by Lyle Jewell, who served as its first conductor. He and other area music educators felt it was important for the community and surrounding area to have an avenue in which to perform a variety of challenging literature, and to share with the community through public performances. The Bemidji Chorale is currently conducted by Patricia Mason and accompanied by Wayne Hoff. Rehearsals are every Monday night, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at BSU, from September to

Tips to build good credit during and after college StatePoint Media There’s a lot of learning that takes place during and after college, including many lessons outside of the classroom. When it comes to personal finance, however, young people don’t need to learn their lessons the hard way. Consider these tips to help you establish good credit that will lay the foundation for a healthy financial future —well beyond college:
DO YOUR RESEARCH
With so many reports of rampant consumer debt, you may be tempted to shy away from opening a credit card account, but opening a credit card is a crucial step in establishing a credit history. A healthy credit history is not just necessary for most home and car loans, in many cases, it’s also required for establishing accounts with utility services and signing apartment leases. What’s more, good credit can help you avoid security deposit fees, get better insurance rates, and even help you land that dream job, as many employers run credit checks on candidates. The good news is that 83 percent of college graduates and 57 percent of current college students have at least one credit card, according to “Majoring in Money,” a recent national study by Sallie Mae and Ipsos. Also, nearly all young adults — 97 percent — make at least the minimum
payment each month. Moral of the story? Get a credit card and use it responsibly.
BE SELECTIVE
There are many credit cards marketed specifically to young people. Make sure to select your credit accounts wisely and watch out for programs offering rewards and benefits that make maxing out, and then owing big, all too easy. Instead, look for credit cards designed to promote and reward long-term financial responsibility, offered by financial institutions committed to customer success. For example, Sallie Mae is introducing a new suite of credit cards with a range of benefits that do just that. The Sallie Mae Ignite card, for example, is designed to help college students responsibly establish and manage credit. For those looking to make progress towards important financial goals, the Sallie Mae Accelerate card offers a cash back bonus program designed to help pay down any student loan. Finally, the Sallie Mae Evolve card, automatically rewards a cash bonus on your top two purchase categories each month. All three cards feature universal benefits, including U.S.-based customer service, free monthly access to credit scores, immediate access to the card upon approval, a mobile app, and tools to deliver security and control.
