SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT From the early nineties Bengal Foundation has been supporting artists, writers and researchers to pursue higher studies and receive better training, through scholarships and grants. Bengal Scholars, in most cases, are regular students at universities and colleges who utilise the grant to take additional lessons and fortify their training. It is believed that art is inherently learned from a teacher over the years, and that is why it is important to foster the guru-shiswa relationship. In the case of music and the visual arts, grants are given to students to enable them to take special lessons with a guru. The Foundation monitors scholars’ progress by assess-
