AWARDS Bengal Foundation Award Introduced in 1998, the Bengal Foundation Art Award is given to an artist for outstanding work in the National Art Exhibition organised every two years by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka. Upgraded to Tk. 75,000 in 2011, the award carries with it a citation and a cheque. Awardees : Rokeya Sultana (b. 1958) 1998 . HSBC-Kali OKalam Young Poets and Writers Award
The literary monthly Kali O Kalam and the world’s local bank HSBC have jointly launched Tarun Kabi O Lekhak Puraskar to encourage and inspire literary practice among young poets and writers of Bangladesh. The competition for the award was first held in 2008. Works published between July of one year and June of the next, by poets and writers between the ages of 18 to 40 years ,are eligible for the competition. In 2009 prizes were given in two categories - Poetry and Creative Writing. A third category was included the next year. The third cycle declared in October 2010 had 2 additional awards raising the total number of categories to 5; these are - Poetry, Creative Writing, Research and Drama, Writings on the War of Liberation and Juvenile Literature. The Board of Jurors comprises of eminent writers and literary critics. The award ceremony held in April each year is widely attended. Each winner receives a cheque for Tk. 100,000, a crest, a trophy and a citation. The function is brought to a close with a musical soiree. The Young Poet Award for 2008 went to Obayed Akash for his book of poems titled Shiter Prakar. The Young Writer Award was given to Saymon Zakaria for his research document titled Bangladesher Loko Natya: Angik-Boichitra. In April 2010, three young writers- novelist Ahmed Mustafa Kamal for his book Andha Jadukar, essayist Azizul Parvez for his book Ekaturer Gonohotya and poet Ahmed Munir for his book Ami O Bagharu - received the awards. In the third cycle held in 2011, awards could only be given in 4 categories because no befitting work was submitted in the category of Juvenile Literature. The four awardees were : Kazi Rafi for his fictional novel Dhusar Swapner Sasandra, Prasanta Mridha for his book Galper Khoje, Apurba Sharma for his research-based novel Sylhete Juddhaparadh O Prasangik Dalilpatra and Tokon Thakur for his book of poems Bhashay Prakash Kora Jay Na. Kali O Kalam, now in its 8th year, has won wide acclaim for its important role in showcasing the best of contemporary Bengali writing. HSBC’s interest in furthering the cause of young writers is resonant with Kali O Kalam’s broader objective.The HSBC-Kali O Kalam Award has greatly encouraged young writers and energized the literary scene in Bangladesh. Karika-Bengal Foundation Sonar Harin Puraskar The award was initiated in 2004 in collaboration with leading crafts cooperative Karika, to honour master craftspersons. Hamidur Rahman Smrity Puraskar A graduate of the art college in Dhaka, Hamidur Rahman (1928-1988) received extensive training in Europe and in the US. He executed many public commissions but is most remembered for his great contribution in the design of the Central Shaheed Minar--the memorial for the martyrs of the 1952 Launguage Movement. He received the Ekushey Padak in 1980. A painter, writer and teacher, Hamidur Rahman spent the last days of his life in Canada. The Hamidur Rahman Smrity Puraskar is offered by painter Hamidur Rahman’s family every two years to an outstanding Bangladeshi artist. The award is nominated by a special committee of artists and members of Hamidur Rahman’s family. The award is managed by Bengal Foundation. Internationally acclaimed painter Monirul Islam received the first award in 2007. The second award was given to eminent painter Syed Jahangir in 2011. 260

The award of merit was organised in 2000 in collaboration with the national daily Bhorer Kagoj to honour female students who secured top scores in SSC that year.

The Mastercraftspersons Award was initiated in 1989 by the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh with the objective of reviving traditional crafts, recognizing the value of the artisan and encouraging others to follow tradition. In 2010 National Crafts Council of Bangladesh and Bengal Foundation joined hands to organize the Mastercraftspersons Award and a Crafts Fair. The award includes a Tk. 50,000 cheque in four categories of crafts. The awardees for 2010 were : Kamal Chandra Sarkar in the category of Musical Instrument (Banshi), Rani Biswas in the category of Embroidery (Chikankari), Ratan Chandra Das in the category of Leather Crafts, Kartik Basak in the category of Weaving. The Crafts Fair showcasing a range of rural crafts, ran from 18 to 22 September 2010 at the Nalinikanta Bhattashali Hall, Bangladesh National Museum, Dhaka.
