festival of business

Festival of Business The Festival of Business is the premier business event, showcasing and promoting the diverse business community in Hounslow and across west London, enabling our local companies to showcase their products and services, ensuring our pound is spent locally, keeping our economy strong. Our seventh Festival of Business is almost here! During the day we will showcase and champion business across the boroughs. The Chamber exists to support firms, assisting them to grow and create new jobs, while at the same time encouraging new start-ups that innovate and fill the demands of the marketplace. At our Festival of Business, we give local companies a platform to demonstrate their products and services to our local economy. Our job is to support and be the voice for business in our part of west London. We believe that when businesses are given the necessary space to grow, communities benefit from new jobs, property development and other economic activities that take shape. The London Borough of Hounslow has a vibrant and diverse population of some 280,000 people and a business community in excess of some 18,000 companies that reflect all aspects of that diversity. London is the biggest economy in the UK and after the City of London

Tech apprenticeship programme is inspiring next generation New Chamber Director Sam Liu talks to Sarah Dale about a tech apprenticeship programme he launched post-Covid to nurture and upskill young people in the borough to secure jobs in the tech industry.

Watching young people’s confidence grow as they gain valuable skills and knowledge in the technology sector as part of an apprenticeship programme he spearheads makes Sam Liu proud.

“I realised my team came from privileged backgrounds, they went to private schools and graduated from Russell Group Universities,” explained Sam, who joined the Chamber’s advisory board at the end of last year.

The Tech Start programme was launched to support young people, many from deprived backgrounds, in the borough.

“I felt there are opportunities here and we should make them available to other people too. A lot of the young people in the borough do not have access to these programmes or do not believe they would get accepted.

Sam approached Harrow Club to run a pilot training programme. Once a course structure was agreed in partnership with Google and accredited by the Open University, the team reached out to the Social Impact team at WeWork, who kindly agreed to part fund their office in Hammersmith. The six-month programme, which has 10 apprentices in each cohort, includes the relevant certification and work placements and all lead to secured employment in the industry and being paid the London Living Wage. Sam started his business when he left school in 2007 as he wanted the freedom to travel while building a successful company, which now has development teams in west London, Hong Kong and Melbourne. The business owner decided to launch the apprenticeship programme post-Covid to ensure young people, whatever their background, could access opportunities.

“The mantra is ‘It does not matter where you come from or what you have done in the past, the opportunity is there for you’. “The camaraderie of the groups means they support each other and work together. “Our recruit, train and deploy model works. It’s been really good to see our apprentices flourish and watch them grow in confidence. “I introduce them to clients and secure work placements for the young people. Business owners know that they will turn up on time smartly dressed and trained in the tech that they use. The young people want to do well because I have personally recommended them.” One of the stand-out projects from the programme, says Sam, is with QPR FC, leveraging the existing relationship between WebFX and the club to secure placements to build the club’s match day management

software and operate the system on match days. The programme, which has also supported Ukrainian refugees grow their skills to work in UK companies, is being extended to school leavers offering young people aged 16 an alternative route to employment through paid apprenticeships. Sam, who sits on the Enterprise Board at Hammersmith and Fulham Council, is looking for other businesses’ support for the apprenticeship programme, which is currently running its third cohort and recruiting its fourth. At present, the apprenticeship programmes are entirely funded by WebFX. Sam also runs Networking.London, which was originally started to help young people taking part in the programme access business owners to talk about their careers. “It’s become a really vibrant community which runs alongside west London Chambers of Commerce,” said Sam. “We share the same views of the Chamber and are big supporters of their events – we brought a quarter of the teams for their latest golf event. Being able to connect with larger businesses in the borough can support local training initiatives – and it will be good to have more access to businesses who want to support youth mobility.”

“I felt there are opportunities here and we should make them available to other people too. A lot of the young people in the borough do not have access to these programmes or do not believe they would get accepted.” let’s talkbusiness

They’re driven by a profound commitment to improve people’s health, fostering a community of well-being. Wild Chai is not just about tea; it’s a journey towards healthier lives, inspiring individuals to make positive choices for themselves and their communities. Winning the Advance for Growth award and working with West London Chambers of Commerce & JCDecaux was an absolute game-changer for our business. Putting the financial value of the media exposure aside, being a small self-funded startup, our internal team resource is limited. Being able to leverage the full JCDecaux OOH network alongside their fully integrated implementation team was an incredibly valuable opportunity.

patron focus

‘Make a new friend every day’ with the support of the Chamber Pernod Ricard Public Affairs Director, Jonathan Brenton, tells Sarah Dale why being a Chamber Patron embodies their founder’s motto. Pernod Ricard’s founder Paul Ricard’s motto was to “make a new friend every day”. This approach to business is the reason the premium spirits company joined West London Chambers of Commerce in 2014, when Pernod Ricard UK first moved to Chiswick Business Park. Since then, the Group’s presence in West London has expanded to more than 500 employees, with their Global Travel Retail business relocating here from Hong Kong in 2017, and Chivas Brothers, their business dedicated to Scotch whisky, opening an office in 2020. Public Affairs Director Jonathan Brenton said: “The Chamber does a great job raising the profile of businesses, particularly SMEs, and bringing different companies, industries and community organisations together with local MPs and local Government. “Those networking opportunities are always helpful, and our involvement in the Chamber is also to give back, and to support West London as a great place to do business with an excellent ecosystem. For this reason, we were delighted to sponsor the Chamber’s Awards this year. Hats off to Alan and Sally and their team for a first-class event!” As Patrons, they are great supporters of the Chamber and encourage new members to join. “As with any membership, you get out of it what you put in, so be vocal and put yourself out there,” said Jonathan. “That’s good for your business, but also good for the Chamber which is strong when its members’ commitments are strong. It can be fun as well. Our founder, Paul Ricard, had a motto to ‘make a new friend every day’; you never know where the next conversation may lead, or what opportunities may be around the corner.” The Group now has four businesses operating in West London. entity, Chivas Brothers, and The Absolut Group behind all their gins. Every year, they export more than £1 billion of UK-made goods to approximately 170 markets worldwide, and in some of these they continue to face very high barriers to entry – tariffs on Scotch whisky in India, for example, are 150 per cent. “We’ve been very supportive of the Government’s efforts to get a deal over the line,” he added. “Indeed, over 90 per cent of what we produce in the UK is exported, and we import brands from all over the world, so trade is critical to our success. “For our UK distribution business, the cost of living remains important. On average, taxation represents around 70 per cent of the price of a bottle of spirits, and around 50 per cent of a bottle of wine. In 2023, alcohol duty increased by +10.1 per cent, the highest increase in more than 40 years, bang in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. The increase has been bad for High Streets and it hasn’t helped Central Government revenues. “For our international Duty-Free business, as international travel has resumed post-Covid, there are a lot of opportunities within the UK. Post-Brexit, the Government re-introduced Duty-Free travel with Europe and increased

Duty-Free allowances. Consequently, around four million British people will purchase Duty Free goods in Europe this year. “We’d like to bring some of those purchases back home by changing the law to allow Duty Free Stores on Arrival, which are commonplace worldwide. That would give greater flexibility to UK consumers and it would be good for the UK’s economy.” Within London, investments by the Group have included the opening of a new 85,000 square foot office on Chiswick Park in 2020, which is now home to four companies, and the acquisition of The Whisky Exchange, which has award-winning shops in Covent Garden and London Bridge and a global online business including rare whiskies. They also have Beefeater distillery in Kennington, home to the world’s most awarded gin, which had a new still installed last year. Much of their focus now is on boosting the sustainability of their global business and meeting ambitious climate targets. Chivas Brothers announced £60 million in planned investment towards their goal to be carbon neutral in distillation by the end of 2026. This includes the installation of innovative technology called Mechanical Vapour Recompression.

Trade remains key to their Scotch whisky entity, Chivas Brothers, and The Absolut Group behind all their gins. Tennis champion Andy is backing Padel At first glance, it’s not surprising to see tennis star Andy Murray and his brother Jamie with rackets in hand, but look again, and you’ll see these are not tennis rackets. In fact, they aren’t really rackets at all, but bats. Padel bats, and that’s because Britain’s most successful tennis playing siblings have put money into the new sport sweeping the country, with courts recently opened in Chiswick, Hounslow and Wandsworth.

Jamie & Andy Murray

Padel is the world’s fastest growing sport and is best described as a cross between tennis and squash, played on court one third the size of a tennis court with enclosed walls. It’s fast paced, highly sociable (played in doubles pairs) and those that have adopted it, say it’s extremely addictive.

a Spanish squash player modified his squash court to incorporate elements of tennis. It took til 2011 for padel to come to the UK but since then it’s seen something of an explosion and is rapidly gaining pace as a sport for everyone, whether they’ve ever picked up a racket before or not.

Murray explained: “I decided to invest in padel because I think it’s a really easy entry point into racket sports. Many people are put off the idea of joining a tennis club because it’s not really somewhere they feel they’ll fit in or the expense of it stops them, but padel is much more accessible.

“Game4padel set up a padel court in Westfield shopping centre last year, and it was a huge hit”, said Murray. “People were really fascinated by what this new sport was, and they didn’t find it intimidating at all”.

“It’s a much easier sport to pick up and learn, and so people who would battle to have a decent game of tennis, can actually have pretty good rallies in padel after one or two sessions”. Game4Padel, the UK market leader, is the company they have backed. With 15 venues open around the country already they are planning on opening around another 20 venues in 2024 in destinations as varied as sports clubs, business parks, hotels, schools and universities and even shopping centres. Murray continued: “I first played padel in Spain when I was training there as a teenager. The sport is massive there – it’s the second biggest participation sport after football and there are over 20,000 courts. Part of the reason it’s grown so quickly is that it doesn’t require as much space as a tennis court, so padel does well in towns and cities where space is limited”. The sport originated in Mexico in the late 1960s when

Westfield are currently awaiting a planning application for three courts at their Shepherd’s Bush site, as they can see the potential to attract a new audience to the centre and build a community – a quality that padel also adds. The social side of the game is easy to see as people chat whilst playing because they are so close to each other at the net and have a drink or a coffee afterwards. Game4Padel have courts at Chiswick Riverside Virgin Active, Bloom Heathrow business park, Hounslow and The Padel Yard in Wandsworth who are already dong well, attracting a mix of fitness fanatics and trend setters, as well as families, older people, work colleagues and teenagers. Whether the sport will take over from tennis, Murray isn’t so sure: “I think there’s a place for both. There are still plenty of people that play tennis and love tennis. The tennis Tour and the Grand Slams are such huge events that attract massive audiences, that I can’t see that changing. But can padel sit alongside that? I think so. There’s definitely room for both”.

“Part of the reason it’s grown so quickly is that it doesn’t require as much space as a tennis court, so padel does well in towns and cities where space is limited”. 14

Bees United retain a ‘special share’ in the club, providing fans with the right to veto the sale of the stadium unless certain conditions are met. Bees United also retains a seat on the club’s main board of directors as the fans’ representative. Before the unveiling, club staff, legends, representatives from Bees United and fans came together for an event where attendees heard about Brentford FC’s past with historians Jonathan Burchill, Brendan Nevin and club ambassador Peter Gilham. Items from the club’s history including matchday programmes and merchandise were also on display as well as previous kits worn by Brentford players throughout the years.

Brentford chair Cliff Crown said: “Togetherness and community are key values to everyone at Brentford Football Club. It was those values that inspired those members of the Brentford Rowing Club to create a football team for the residents of Brentford. And now we have a special place that can bring fans and the local community together to take a moment to celebrate our club. “

It is an activity that connects people and helps build communities. ParkPlay is tackling some of the most pressing social issues of our time – lack of exercise, isolation, mental health and need for escape. As we recover from Covid and now face the cost-of-living crisis, it’s never been more important to give communities free ways to connect and boost their wellbeing.” Nearby Parkside Yards, a vibrant new destination at the Southall development, gives attendees and spectators the chance to fuel up beforehand and relax afterwards, offering a café, pizza van and outdoor piazza, as well as a nature trail, children’s play area and a giant jumping pillow. This is the third PlayPark to launch in Southall, giving locals and residents alike more opportunity to come together and enjoy the extensive green, open space that’s right on their doorstep. Rick Jenner, CEO of ParkPlay, comments: “After a stressful, busy week, lots of people enjoy playing and meeting up with their friends and neighbours at ParkPlay.

Jags Sanghera, head of community engagement at Berkeley’s The Green Quarter, comments: “We are honoured to host the 50th ParkPlay, offering an opportunity for our community to come together through games in the great outdoors. At The Green Quarter, we’re proud to have created a place filled with trees, plants, and green space for people to enjoy and are proud of how much we have achieved so far, with a tree nursery, playspace, canalside paths and Central Gardens already open. It was great welcoming locals and residents alike to our development for the launch and we look forward to offering them some respite from the hussle and bussle of everyday life in London each week.” 15 let’s talkbusiness

the big interview

Crafting sustainable luxury:

The BOGD journey There is a new luxury brand on the block: BOGD. Husband-and-wife owners Bat-Erdene Victor Nyamdavaa and Vicky Dzamsran talk to Sarah Dale about cashmere, Buddhism and, of course, goats.

In the heart of the luxury cashmere realm, BOGD, founded by Bat-Erdene Victor Nyamdavaa and Vicky Dzamsran, is redefining elegance with a commitment to sustainability. In February 2023, BOGD took a significant step towards reaching a global audience by launching their online shop at www.bogd. co.uk. Their online presence quickly garnered attention, leading to a feature in the May edition of our magazine. Building on this momentum, the founders, Bat-Erdene Victor Nyamdavaa and Vicky Dzamsran, materialised their vision of bringing sustainable luxury to a physical space. In November, they proudly opened the doors to their brick-and-mortar store on Walton Street, nestled conveniently next to the iconic Harrods. The grand opening was a star-studded affair, attended by esteemed guests such as HRH Duke of Kent, renowned portraitist Barbara Kaczmarowska Hamilton, accomplished entrepreneur, investor, and reality television personality Touker Suleyman, Sally Smith, Chief Operating Officer of West London Chambers of Commerce, Ali Reza Ravanshad, Founder & CEO of DANDI, and representatives from the Sustainable Fiber Alliance (SFA). The presence of such

notable figures underscored the significance of BOGD’s commitment to sustainable luxury, drawing attention from influential personalities across various industries. This strategic location serves as a testament to their commitment to providing an immersive and accessible luxury cashmere experience for all. Their aim was to create a traceable, ethically sourced and sustainable cashmere brand that encompasses luxury fashion and the Nomadic way of life and it is proving to be a rising star with famous faces such as actors Martin Compston and Richard Armitage and some of the cast of Made in Chelsea spotted as fans. Both from Mongolia, Bat-Erdene moved to the UK 11 years ago “for love, to be with Vicky”, who had moved to the UK the year before. Now the proud parents of a three-year-old daughter, they “love working together” and bringing their ideas to life. As Buddhists, they want to “give back as much as we can” and spent two years pre-launch on creating the sustainable and ethical brand.

It was perhaps inevitable that Bat-Erdene would launch his own business, having worked as a financial analyst for the past eight years for the BBC’s Dragon’s Den businessowner and “dragon” Touker Suleyman, who has been an invaluable mentor. The name BOGD, rooted in Buddhism and Mongolian heritage, pays homage to the last King of Mongolia and the third most significant figure in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy. Also Tavan Bogd is the highest mountain in Mongolia which reaches to 4374 metres above sea level. BOGD’s parent company, Khanbogd, has consistently held its position among the top 100 companies in Mongolia for the last 25 years, specialising in the production and supply of cashmere. With a global impact, Khanbogd plays a pivotal role, contributing more than 20% to the entire world cashmere supply. Esteemed for its unwavering commitment to quality, the company serves as a key supplier for numerous high-end brands. According to Bat-Erdene, boasting a decade of retail expertise, the distinction of Mongolian cashmere lies in the extraordinary conditions

Looking forward to 2030, BOGD envisions an array of growth initiatives, including expanding their clientele, enhancing the Mongolian factory, introducing a recycled cashmere collection, repurposing pre-loved jumpers into teddies for charitable causes, launching an in-store tailoring and dry cleaning service, and pioneering a unique goat adoption scheme. under which the goats thrive-residing at a soaring altitude of 2,000 metres above sea level in an extremely cold climate, reaching temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees. This unique environment contributes to the exceptional quality of Mongolian cashmere, setting it apart from other cashmereproducing regions globally, including Pakistan, China, India, Afghanistan, etc. In this challenging environment, the goats cultivate fine under-hair close to their bodies, serving as a natural insulation to endure harsh winters. This downy layer is naturally shed in the spring, preparing the goats for the warmer summer months. The fibre produced by Mongolian cashmere goats, camels, and yaks showcases a diverse array of natural colors, ranging from pure white to almost black. Notably, premium cashmere can reach as low as eight microns—10 times thinner than a human hair—contributing to the luxurious softness that characterises cashmere. Providing a luxurious customer experience is also paramount to the business with the offer of a glass of Champagne or a soft drink and the time to browse the store at one’s leisure. Private appointments are also available on request. “Anyone visiting the store is sure to enjoy a VIP experience,” said Vicky, who also runs Care Hub, which helps people from overseas into jobs in the care sector in the UK. They have mapped out big plans over the next seven years, which include the launch of their cashmere-silk mix range in the summer. Creating a sustainable business with a social responsibility is important to the couple and BOGD has its own Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy called

the N.O.W. Approach. ‘N’ stands for Nomadic people and the Nomadic way of life. The company has set a 3,000-vaccination goal for 2023 to support the goats’ health. They also provide support to dig wells, which can supply five to ten households with clean water. ‘O’ stands for operation and the company supports female-led households and provides free training. ‘W’ stands for world matters and includes their tree planting policy so for every transaction made a tree is planted. Bat-Erdene expressed, “Regardless of your company’s size, there’s always room to instigate changes for enhanced sustainability.” He highlighted their Mongolian factory’s dependence on solar power and the Sustainable Fiber Alliance (SFA) approval for all their cashmere. However, acknowledging the unavoidable carbon footprint in production, they actively counterbalance it by planting trees. Bat-Erdene emphasised the fashion industry’s role in waste generation, leading BOGD to adopt a strategic approach with limited collections. The objective is to prevent new garments from ending up in landfills, promoting exclusivity for clients while actively reducing waste. Their commitment extends to recycling cashmere,

Vicky Dzamsran and Victor Nyamdavaa

encouraging clients to bring in pre-loved cashmere items. In return, clients receive credit notes for in-store use, and the recycled cashmere contributes to BOGD’s innovative new collection. Additionally, other brands’ pre-loved cashmere is sent to Mongolia to be transformed into teddy bears for charitable endeavours. “Someone’s loved jumper could then become someone’s loved soft toy.” Joining the West London Chambers of Commerce a year ago proved instrumental for the couple, providing opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and foster collaborations. Notable contributions include providing logoed cashmere blankets to local businesses. “The Chamber gives you power,” said Vicky. “You can exchange ideas and the Chamber provides credibility; people respect it. We love the magazine and have seen it about and knew we wanted to be featured in it. We love Sally Smith, who is so enthusiastic in her support of our business, and we are looking forward to hosting events at our shop.” Sally commented, “I was pleased that my daughter and I were able to attend the opening of BOGD. We so enjoyed seeing the venue in the company of HRH the Duke of Kent and Touker Suleyman. One of the highlights, along with the luxurious cashmere, was hearing Bat-Erdene perform Mongolian throat music. It was such a special occasion, and we wish BOGD all the success they deserve.”

Making a positive impact on local community Business owner Dr Abhnash K Bains is “overjoyed” that three of her organisations, Ishkama Ltd, Ishkama Global Change (IGC) Magazine and Ishkama Global CIC made it to the final round of the Community Business Development Champion Awards 2023, hosted by West London Chambers of Commerce. “My heartfelt appreciation to a dedicated team, especially President Christopher, Sardarji, Sally Smith, Alan Rides and all the Directors and members of the Chambers who reflect a powerful sense of community and mutual support,” she said. “It is evident that their collaborative efforts are making a positive impact on the local community. “I have been a member of this organisation since its inception and have witnessed its remarkable growth and success. I am always willing to work with such organisations and like-minded people who work towards the betterment of the community.” It is more than 20 years since Abhnash started Ishkama Ltd with the hope that everyone would see the benefits of holistic therapies. “When I survived a car accident suffering physical and head injuries, I followed a holistic approach in life, which I continue to this day, and there are several who have benefitted through our methods,” she said. After a year of success with Ishkama, she decided to provide beauty treatments at affordable prices. This was because she has always believed that “when you look good you feel good”.

“For me, mental health is a priority and I give immense importance to women’s mental health as they carry the emotional burden in a family,” she added. “Thus, came KIA Beauty salon operating in ASDA Superstores, Hounslow. “The beauty of doing community services lies in the fact that we enjoy giving until it becomes a habit. I have served as the PDG in Lions International organisation, and I value humanitarian projects. I started Ishkama Global Change with a focus and determination to recognise individuals and organisations globally so that it would encourage others to follow and deliver services to benefit them and their local communities. “My international magazine publishes articles about ordinary people doing great services and making them known at the global platform. “Ishkama Global CIC is a community Interest company that has global and country Chairs who are leading service projects. IGC for Autism is one such project which has been operating for a year, led by our IGC Chairs and volunteers. However, I feel I still haven’t achieved enough to bring global change, so the work goes on.”

King Charles visits Ealing to meet award-winning community groups King Charles III visited Ealing to meet six local volunteer-run community groups who are recipients of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (formerly The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service). Hundreds of people gathered at Ealing Broadway shopping centre to catch a glimpse of the King on his visit in December. The King spoke to the founders and leaders of the community groups and had a tour of Ealing Broadway’s famous annual Christmas Market, meeting business owners and catching up with Santa and two of his elves. The local recipients of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) and The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) were: • Ealing Wildlife Group: A volunteer-run group focusing on protecting local wildlife (KAVS 2023). • LAGER Can: A litter action group for Ealing residents (QAVS 2021). • Descendants: A charity for children and young people focusing on African and Caribbean culture (QAVS 2019). • PACE: A voluntary organisation promoting the inclusion of young disabled people in sports and leisure activities (QAVS 2021). • Mael Gael: A Southall-based project for the elderly and for young people (QAVS 2021). • The William Hobbayne Charity: Supports residents of Hanwell who are in need, hardship, or distress (QAVS 2022).

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Dr Sean McCormack, vet and Chair of Ealing Wildlife Group, said: “It was a pleasure to chat with His Majesty The King about all our work in Ealing, including our Beaver project. He was charming, had a good sense of humour and was well clued up on nature conservation and rewilding. “He was surprised to hear of some species we’re lucky to have now thriving in our urban green spaces like harvest mice and barn owls and agreed on the need to protect those spaces from development or destruction. As he left, I said we’d be happy to help him with beaver reintroduction on the Royal Estates, so watch this space.” Also meeting King Charles was Cathy Swift, chair of LAGER Can. She said: “It was a real honour for members of LAGER Can to meet His Majesty King Charles, not least because we know he shares our environmental concerns – and even took his sons litter picking when they were younger.” Festive cheer was provided by 30 schoolchildren from Christ The Saviour COE Primary School and a local Polish choir.

The King also watched a special signed dance performance by Impact Theatre Group. The group, which supports adults with learning disabilities, previously won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2018. Andrew Rollings, Centre Director, said: “We’re incredibly proud to welcome His Majesty The King to the centre and to celebrate the brilliant local community and volunteers we have in Ealing. “It really is a town where people come together to support others, which we’ve experienced first-hand this year with the incredibly generous volume of uniform and winter coat donations we’ve received as part of our ongoing ambition to provide initiatives that give back to our community and beyond. We truly hope His Majesty enjoyed his visit to the centre and left feeling inspired by Ealing’s community spirit, with a touch of festive cheer.”

Hollywood actor drops in for Christmas Day lunch More than 300 elderly guests enjoyed the Big H&F Christmas Day Lunch in Hammersmith which saw a special drop in from Hollywood actor and H&F Giving patron Hugh Grant. H&F Giving worked with Hammersmith & Fulham Council to organise and raise funds to treat older, isolated residents of the borough to a special two-course lunch at the Novotel London West Hotel in Hammersmith. The 325 elderly guests also received a gift bag and free transport was provided for those who needed it. A resident from Sycamore House, an almshouse run by Hammersmith United Charities (HUC) for low-income elderly residents, said: “As always, a really amazing day and I especially loved seeing a Hollywood film star. Thank you hugely to everyone for organising such a memorable and very special day.” Louise Wilson, Executive Director at H&F

Giving, said: “I had the absolute pleasure of spending Christmas with hundreds of elderly residents of Hammersmith and Fulham who would have otherwise spent the day alone. “We are hugely thankful to all the local companies, trusts and residents who donated to make this day happen – days like these are only achievable because of your support. A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the day so special including H&F Giving’s patron Hugh Grant, who brought some extra special, surprise festive cheer to the day by joining us to help serve lunch to local residents – it really was a Christmas to remember.” In total, with a generous contribution from Hammersmith & Fulham Council, they raised more than £45,000 to ensure this event could take place. The crowdfunding campaign on H&F Giving’s website raised more than £16,000 from residents from the borough and local businesses contributed more than £16,000 too. This year, they also saw an

increase in local pensioners donating their unneeded Winter Fuel Allowance to ensure their elderly neighbours didn’t spend the day alone. Any excess funds raised will go towards engagement activities for older and vulnerable residents in the borough throughout 2024. Dr Edward & Bishop King’s Fulham Charity (DEBK) donated £6,000, The Earls Court Development Company donated £5,000 including the cost of the gift bags, Networking London donated £2,300, and Olympia London and Friends of Brook Green both sponsored a table of residents at £1,000 each. Hammersmith BID, a continued supporter of the event, donated £500. H&F Giving’s core funders include City Bridge Foundation, NEC Software Solutions and Raw Tipis, along with founding partners, DEBK and HUC. Dukes Meadows Footbridge takes the crown The new Dukes Meadows Footbridge in Chiswick, which was opened by the Council in February 2023, has won an award at the New London Architecture ‘New London Awards 2023’ in the Transport and Infrastructure category. The new walkway provides people with convenient and safer access to the scenic Thames Path, removing the previous obstacle of a long detour to rejoin the path after Barnes Bridge.

The successful project was made possible by local community support, the collaboration between the Council and its partners, and the dedication shown by former Hounslow Leader, Steve Curran, and current local ward member, Councillor John Todd. The project is part of the Mayor of London’s £53 million Liveable Neighbourhoods initiative and is a prominent example of Hounslow Council’s commitment to invest £5 million to ensure its parks and open spaces remain one of the best in London.

Why not get involved with Chiswick Cinema’s Film Club?

Time to explore art exhibition in Brentford

Andrea Carnevali was one of Chiswick Cinema’s first Founder Members and has become one of their most passionate advocates. He is an actively working filmmaker and editor and co-founded the Chiswick in Film Festival in collaboration with the Chiswick Calendar and the cinema. His Film Club series runs once a month and aims to introduce film technique and history to audiences of all ages. Cinema is founded on community and the shared enjoyment of a story, so the Film Club aims to foster a growing social club for Chiswick, with the chance to revisit old favourites or debate new releases. All are welcome. Andrea said: “What I am trying to do with this film club is to allow people to see films under a new light. Not just placing the film into the context of the time when it was made, but also trying to allow members to rediscover the film under the lens of the filmmakers. Invisible tricks of the trade, technical things which might not be completely apparent on a first watch, but which somehow enhance the viewing experience and subtly make the film work on so many different levels, beyond the

simple story and emotional drive of the film itself. “For example, did you notice the music or lack of music? Why was it filmed widescreen? Did you notice how the camera never cut away? What does the editing trying to do? How is that particular scene staged? What is the art direction doing to enhance the emotions? How does that enhance the feeling of fear, claustrophobia, realism? “I love pulling the rug out from under people’s feet and make them see something they had not noticed and make them realise how a simple cinematic trick can change the feeling of whole film. “My favourite is the one in ET: did you ever notice how Spielberg always keeps his camera at child’s level, cutting off all the grown-ups up until the very last act? Is that why we feel so close to the kids? Is this why we are so scared of those shadowy figures (adults)? Is that why no matter how many times we watch that film, it still makes us laugh and cry?”

Upcoming Film Clubs include ‘Fight Club,’ ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ and ‘Rear Window.’ Maximum ticket price £12, Member free tickets apply. www.chiswickcinema.co.uk/whats-on/film-club/

A free art exhibition exploring the concept of time is being held at Watermans. The West London arts centre on High Street, Brentford, is hosting ‘Tenderly Towards the Tipping Point’ until Thursday, 14th March. The five artists – Kaushal Sapre, Mohit Shelare, Sonam Chaturvedi, Aasma Tulika, Bazik Thlana – have brought together a multitude of artistic responses to time and the imposition of time. It explores how some of us welcome a structure as to how we spend our hours, days and weeks whereas others resist imposed order. The artists mimic the social organisation of spiders, where individuals spin webs taking each other’s constructions as scaffolding for improvising more and more architecture. It includes a brief moment of contact with a fingerprint sensor producing a landscape untouched by human time and a vending machine requiring payment in time. let’s talkbusiness

H&F is a ‘thriving business community’ with plans to grow

Image coutesy of lbhf.gov.uk

Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s ambition is to make the borough the best place to do business in Europe with its Economic Growth for Everyone industrial strategy.

Hammersmith & Fulham is already home to a thriving business community, including global companies such as GE, Disney, and L’Oreal. The borough also has one of the highest concentrations of start-up firms. As a result, the Council is focusing on accelerating growth in key sectors where there are already pockets of innovation. This includes in the creative, digital, film and screen sector (employing nearly 7,000 people) including in the television industry where H&F has the highest concentration of companies in the UK, and across nearly 200 businesses in green and climate tech.

The borough is also home to a significant and growing life sciences cluster with at least 170 businesses based in the borough. There are many benefits to living and working in the borough including its location halfway between Heathrow and the city and the West End, and its many transport links, which include 14 tube stations, two motorways, and current work to build Europe’s biggest train station at Old Oak Common which will provide an interchange between HS2 and Crossrail. There is a thriving media and arts scene with the BBC, Endemol and Disney, as well as the renowned Shepherds Bush and Lyric theatres, the Apollo and LAMDA. Local Government plays a crucial role in bringing partners together, regenerating town centres, helping with affordable workspaces, and teaching people the skills they need to succeed to ensure economic growth. With a view to this, their Economic Growth for Everyone industrial strategy sets out their plans, which include: • How they will make it easier for savvy entrepreneurs to start a business, creating more affordable workspaces, exploring business rates cuts for key sectors, and creating a new venture capital fund to support tech and creative businesses.

• Details of major regeneration and infrastructure schemes, including delivering 10,000 new homes, half of which will be affordable, as well as improvements to rail links and the station at Old Oak Common. • Investment in local skills, with extra support for science and maths teachers and apprenticeships.

“We want to create the right conditions for firms to flourish and to accelerate growth in sectors with high-growth potential, including our burgeoning biotech, digital and creative industries” Cllr Stephen Cowan, Leader of H&F Council. 24

The strategy builds on the H&F Business Commission’s Upstream report and is informed by feedback from local firms and entrepreneurs. It identifies four key areas where the Council can help foster business success and pledges to make it happen in H&F:

• Better spaces: Promoting co-working space and hubs. • Building a community: Fostering entrepreneurial networks. • After work options: A more vibrant nightlife in the borough. • Changing our ways: Supporting businesses better. The Council has in place a longstanding partnership with Imperial College London to boost local bio-tech, digital and creative businesses. The new partnership helps support the development of a world-class innovation ecosystem, fuelled by close collaboration

between academics, businesses, entrepreneurs and residents. Imperial’s evolving White City Campus includes a major new facility for innovation, the Translation and Innovation Hub (I-HUB) – a space for corporate partners, fast-growth and start-up companies to work side-by-side with Imperial academics in modern office and laboratory space. Princess Anne recently officially opened a new £12 million lab at the college’s Hammersmith campus in Shepherds Bush. Eight storeys high, the new Laboratory of Medical Science (LMS) is home to 400 scientists researching genes, the environment, and heart and metabolic diseases. It was unveiled on 23rd January by The Princess Royal, who also enjoyed a tour of the facilities. To make the borough an even better place to live and work, major improvements are planned to the town centre with new offices and leisure activities, as well as a new public square.

Palace Wharf was built in 1907, replacing a malt house. An extension facing Rainville Road was added in 1933. For many years the wharf was the “Rathbone Works” of fibrous plaster firm, George Jackson & Sons, founded in Rathbone Place off Oxford Street in the early 19th century. Jacksons’ made the new plasterwork for Hammersmith’s rebuilt Lyric Theatre. Prior to the Second World War, Jackson’s moved from their original home in the West End to Hammersmith, keeping the Rathbone name for their spacious new premises.

The building is perfectly located adjacent to the River Thames and is just a short walk to Putney and Hammersmith where there is access to overground and underground stations. Just around the corner lies Munster Village, a hidden gem, which hosts several boutique shops and delicious local restaurants.

How the team at Hammersmith BID is using events to drive footfall and spend in the town centre, benefitting Hammersmith businesses

Creating a vibrant Hammersmith

We hear from Hammersmith BID about how the annual Summer Festival event is a brilliant case study for how BIDs can drive footfall, dwell time and spend in our town centres.

The Hammersmith BID Summer Festival has been a fixture of West London for the past 16 years, and continues to go from strength to strength. Our varied programme of free events through June and July include entertainment on the Big Screen, live music, activities for London Climate Action Week and more, which attracted an audience of local residents and office workers to spend more time in Hammersmith. The festival has also proved a brilliant way to boost the visitor economy in Hammersmith, with all the benefits this brings to the local economy. In 2023, we attracted over 44,000 people to Lyric Square over a four-week period, with over half a million passing through the square over the duration of the festival.

let’s talkbusiness

Big Screen & Livat sponsorship Our Big Screen is a regular feature of the Summer Festival and audiences love watching all two weeks of Wimbledon action from the comfort of our deckchairs – and just a few miles down the river from SW19. We also host free film nights, which drew an audience of just under 1,000 people across three events, and in 2023 were able to screen the beginning of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Partnership working is central to the BID’s values and mission, so last year we were thrilled to have Livat Hammersmith (Ingka)

sponsor our Big Screen and as a partner for several of our events. Green initiatives and supporting a thriving local community are a key part of Hammersmith BID’s five-year business plan, and are just as important to Livat, making them the perfect event partner.

Taking climate action From Saturday 24 June to Sunday 2 July, we joined forces with Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Livat Hammersmith to celebrate London Climate Action Week (LCAW). Events included a Biodiversity Bee Workshop and Wildflower Planting (attended by 100+ people), Dr Bike & Bike Marking (21 bikes serviced and marked), IKEA’s Circular Hub and a Community Litter Pick. We also hosted our first Clothes Swap, which saw 420 items donated/swapped and 112.07kg of landfill saved.

Bringing office workers back to Hammersmith Our regular events Picnic in the Square and Wellness Wednesdays returned, with free classes from local businesses Lumi Power Yoga and Jetts Hammersmith. Our surveys showed that 56% of Picnic in the Square attendees and 53% of Wellness Wednesday attendees were local office workers. In addition to creating a community space with giant picnic tables and benches laid out, Picnic in the Square supports local businesses, encouraging people to pick up lunch at a local eatery. Overall, 93% of attendees agreed it changed their perception of Hammersmith to ‘much better than they thought’.

Creating a vibrant Hammersmith Our team of stewards surveyed attendees for feedback, and we were delighted that the majority of people agreed with the statement, ‘This event makes Hammersmith feel vibrant’ at each event. Through our event surveys, we discovered that most attendees reported having bought or intended to buy something, showing the wider benefits of the festival for the businesses in Hammersmith. This year we were able to track visitors to the square more thoroughly thanks to new equipment installed in our screen. The data showed that half a million people passed through Lyric Square while the screen was up, from Monday 26 June to Saturday 22 July.

Of this number: • 28.5% spent between 5 and 15 minutes there (almost 150,000 people) • 8.5% (44,000 people) spent more than 30 minutes in the space • Average dwell time for all 500,000 visitors was 13’20” Across the week, average visitors per hour peaked around the hours of 2pm to 7pm when the majority of our festival events were taking place - and Saturdays were the day with the most visitors. Predictably, visitors also peaked on days with sunshine!

What’s next for 2024? With a bumper summer of sport, we have big plans for the festival in 2024! Look out for further activations, fantastic film nights and more business collaborations later this year.

In 2023, we attracted over 44,000 people to Lyric Square over a four-week period, with over half a million passing through the square over the duration of the festival.

Businesses join forces to tackle crime in Hammersmith & Fulham A new Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) between Hammersmith BID and Discover Fulham BID has been launched to combat crime and improve safety in both areas. The new initiative will see the two BIDs pool resources to provide an Engagement Officer, share information and link up with a Londonwide network of town centres in a joint effort to make both areas a safer place to live and work. The BCRP will enable the BIDs to deliver joint initiatives that similarly affect businesses across both areas, such as Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) and Ask For Angela training as well as sharing a crime reporting network with our businesses that can provide intelligence on transient criminals. The Engagement Officer will operate in each town centre two days a week, visiting businesses, deterring criminals and sharing information with the BID’s security partners, including the Met Police. Information gathered by the Engagement Officer will be fed into Alert, a GDPR-compliant reporting platform that the Police, Council, businesses and other security partners can access. As part of the initiative, both BIDs have

Meet Hammersmith and Fulham BCRP’s new Engagement Officer,

Alessandra Galetti

Working with Safer Business Network, as part of their new Business Crime Reduction Partnership forum (BCRP), Alessandra Galetti is the BIDs’ new dedicated Engagement Officer who will visit Hammersmith and Fulham businesses, deterring criminals and sharing information with the BID and security partners, including the Met Police. Alessandra will be visiting the businesses of Hammersmith and Fulham regularly so say hello if you see her around! Hi Alessandra, tell us a little about yourself: I’m Alessandra, and originally from Italy. Following my undergraduate studies at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, I moved to London where I pursued a Master’s in Criminology with Forensic Psychology.

signed up to Safer Business Network, which brings together a large number of London’s BCRPs to share information, tools and resources. Businesses in Hammersmith and Fulham will benefit from direct access to state-of-the-art communication tools, a secure website and app which provides them with up-to-date images of offenders operating in the local area and crime trends, free training and regular information-sharing briefings including PubWatch and ShopWatch. The new partnership is in response to a nationwide increase in crime and anti-social behaviour which affects residents, workers and business owners, impacts business profitability and the look and feel of our town centres. Although there are plans being put in place by the Met Police, the Mayor’s Office and national stores, both BIDs wanted to take a proactive approach rather than waiting for the effects of national policy to filter down to our local areas. Livia Caruso, BID Director at Hammersmith BID said: “We know security is a top priority for Hammersmith’s businesses and we are proud to be working with our neighbours in Fulham to meet the current challenges head on. The new BCRP will help us improve the safety of all those who use the town centre and being part of Safer Business Network is an important step in sharing information and tools to tackle crime.”

Andy Bell, BID Manager at Discover Fulham BID said: “In our recent business survey, crime and safety was the number one priority for our businesses. As our BID areas are so close together, it makes sense to pool resources and make sure that we are doing all we can to tackle business crime together. Consistency in crime reporting will help the Met Police be more efficient in targeting those criminals who are affecting our businesses.”

What did your studies in Italy and London focus on? My studies during my bachelor’s degree in Italy primarily focused on social and psychological sciences. I also had the opportunity to engage with over 100 male inmates at the Maximum-Security Prison in Milan Bollate, which provided me with valuable hands-on experience and a deep understanding of antisocial behaviours. While studying in London, my research interests expanded to the intersection of crime, psychology and technology. For my master’s dissertation, I focused on the Italian Mafia’s exploitation of the internet for illicit activities, exploring the realm of cybersecurity. What will you job in Hammersmith and Fulham involve? I’m currently honoured to be part of the Safer Business Network. The work allows me to leverage my academic background, practical experience, and passion

for community safety to make a meaningful difference. My responsibilities here will encompass a wide range of activities aimed at enhancing safety and security within the area. I will be focused on creating a safer environment for businesses in Hammersmith, fostering a sense of community resilience and empowerment in the face of safety challenges. And finally, let us know your favourite spot in Hammersmith and Fulham for a coffee! My favourite spot in Hammersmith for a coffee is Store Street Espresso. It’s a cozy and welcoming café with a great atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a delicious cup of coffee and perhaps some quiet time or casual conversation. When in Fulham, I like to pick up lunch or a coffee at Gail’s.

Breakthrough moment for British exporters

Following meetings at Arab British Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) conference, attended by the largest private sector delegation from Libya to visit the UK, led by Tripoli Chamber, with whom we signed an MOU recently. BCC welcomes UK financial services deal with Switzerland The British Chambers of Commerce has welcomed the news that the UK has signed a first-of-its-kind financial services agreement with Switzerland. The Berne Financial Services Agreement has been formed to make it easier for UK businesses to provide financial services to the Swiss domestic market, and vice versa. Reacting to the agreement, William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Switzerland is one of the largest global markets for UK services – accounting for 3.8% of total UK services exports during 2023, with financial services worth £2.7 billion per annum alone. “This Agreement creates new opportunities based upon mutual recognition while preserving regulatory autonomy in those affected sectors of financial services. With 85% of UK services exports being delivered digitally, this deal offers strong market access to UK based financial services companies, and Swiss firms alike. “We hope 2024 will see the negotiation of a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with Switzerland building upon this announcement. Any FTA should preserve the right of in-person travel and access for service provision for those businesses who need that. We also hope a bespoke trade deal will also advance mutual recognition of professional qualifications between the UK and Switzerland. Any agreement should also have strong provisions to develop digital trade between the two countries.”

Uncertain times ahead for global trade

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics has revealed there was a pick-up in some export sectors in goods trade with the EU and services remained steady for a further month, but other indicators for November were weak. William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “The positives are there was a pick-up in some export sectors in goods trade with the EU, particularly in automotive sales. Services also remained steady for a further month, with only very small declines. But other indicators for November were weak, particularly on imports. “Looking ahead the picture is only likely to worsen as the effects of the disruption to shipping in the Red Sea, and through the Suez Canal, begin to be fully felt. The Kiel Institute this week estimated global trade fell by 1.3% in December due to the initial impact. “These are stark numbers – the fall in containers taking this route, from the East, amounts to 300,000 per day. This suggests only 40% of normal sea freight traffic is currently travelling via the Red Sea. This is a significant challenge, especially when combined with the other global headwinds which traders are facing in the early weeks of 2024.”

The UK trade picture in detail There has been a steady performance for UK services exports in 2023 but this latest data shows a further decline in UK trade in goods, for both imports and exports. This is mainly due to a decline in trade flows with the rest of the world. The trade surplus in services declined slightly in the three months to November, but the trade in goods deficit widened slightly.

Goods Imports Overall goods imports volumes fell by 3.8% (£1.5 billion) in November. The main falls in purchases from the EU were in machinery and transport equipment (including aircraft from Germany). Goods imports volumes from the rest of the world fell by 6.5% (£1.1 billion), driven largely

by lower sales of cars, electrical machinery and inorganic chemicals imports from China, and reduced imports of pharmaceutical and medicinal products from Switzerland. On the current prices measure goods import values from the EU fell by £0.5 billion (1.7%), while the rest of the world saw import values drop by £1.1 billion (5.4%) over the same period. Overall, goods imports fell by 3.3% (£1.6 billion) on that measure.

Goods Exports Overall goods exports volumes in November fell by 2.8% (£0.7 billion). The significant falls in goods export volumes to the EU over the previous two months of 3.4% and 7% respectively were reversed in November with a modest rise of 0.6% (£0.1 billion). This was connected to a rise in machinery and transport goods sales, including cars to Italy. Goods exports volumes to the rest of the world fell by 5.9% (£0.8 billion), with lower exports of fuels (particularly crude oil) and material manufactures being the key drivers.    On the current prices measure, without inflationary effects being removed, EU goods export values rose by £0.2 billion (1.2%) and nonEU goods fell by £0.8 billion (5.0%). The combined figure shows goods exports falling in value by £0.6 billion (2.0%).

Services On services, import and export volumes both fell slightly by £0.1 billion. On the current prices measure, there were also slight falls in both import and export values of £0.1 billion. Services exports in November were 12% higher, excluding inflation, than in February 2020. The state of data breaches

As we start the new year, understanding your business security and the possible gaps within your IT infrastructure is key in protecting your business from cyber-attacks and data breaches.

by Chamber Patron Timeless IMS

Almost every week, a large organisation is under fire in the news after their data has been leaked as a result of a data breach. The latest report from IBM sheds light on the current landscape of data breaches, highlighting trends, causes, and potential safeguards. The report underlines the alarming frequency of data breaches, revealing that millions of records are compromised each year. While the numbers may vary, the trend remains consistent: organisations across all sectors are under siege from cybercriminals. From healthcare to finance, no sector is immune, making it evident that a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy is critical for all. There is an underlining urgency throughout the report for organisations to invest in robust cybersecurity measures to protect their businesses from the financial and reputational toils that a lack of cyber security can bring.

The importance of safeguarding personal information is crucial, and individuals must stay vigilant against phishing attempts, they must use strong and unique passwords, and enable twofactor authentication whenever possible. As digital processes and products become more integrated into our lives, and cyber threats become more sophisticated and complex, it has become a necessity to implement a constant evolution of cyber security strategies that can protect your business data from falling into the wrong hands. Regular assessment of your network security through penetration testing and employee cybersecurity training can help to prevent and manage these issues, which is an integral part of being proactive in protecting your business.

The best daily routine to maintain a healthy mouth From when you wake up in the morning until you go off to sleep at night, what is the best way to look after your teeth and mouth to keep it in tip top condition? Chamber member Dr Chaw-Su Kyi at West London Orthodontist Cosmetic Dental Studios in Hammersmith Grove discusses the best ways to keep your mouth in a healthy state all day long. Should you brush your teeth before or after breakfast? Brushing Before Breakfast: • It removes the plaque that has built up overnight and freshens your breath. • The fluoride in the toothpaste strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to the acids that can be produced when you eat. • If your breakfast includes acidic foods or drinks (like orange juice or fruit), brushing beforehand can prevent brushing away the softened enamel that can occur after acid exposure.

• Consume Calcium-Rich Foods: Dairy products or leafy greens can help keep your enamel strong and less susceptible to stains. • Maintain a balanced diet and limit the frequency of sugary or acidic snacks and drinks. Foods high in sugar can contribute to tooth decay and high in acid can contribute to eroding or wearing away the enamel. • Stay hydrated throughout the day and drink water: Drinking water helps keep your mouth clean and can also help prevent tooth decay, especially if it’s fluoridated.

Brushing After Breakfast: • It allows you to remove food particles and plaque formed from your breakfast, which helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. • If you choose to brush after eating, it’s recommended to wait at least 30 minutes, especially after consuming acidic foods or drinks. This waiting period allows your saliva to neutralize the acids and your enamel to harden again.

• Chewing Gum: If you can’t brush after a meal, chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva flow, which naturally cleans teeth and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria.

Give up the bad habits Stopping smoking and avoiding tobacco! Avoid tobacco in any form, as it can increase risk of gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth loss. It also causes bad breath and stains teeth.

Dietary Choices Many of us enjoy our coffees and snacks during the day, but how can we keep the mouth as healthy as possible? • Try to limit Staining Foods and Beverages: Coffee, red wine, tumeric and dark berries can stain your teeth. Swishing your mouth with water after having foods or drinks that stain teeth can help reduce the build up of staining. • Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables as they can help clean your teeth naturally.

Establish a daily oral health routine • Brushing Teeth: Brush your teeth twice a day, using a fluoridated toothpaste for at least 2 minutes in the morning and before bed, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces, as well as along the gum line. • Change Your Toothbrush: Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Electric toothbrushes are shown to be more effective with removing plaque.

Try to limit Staining Foods and Beverages: Coffee, red wine, tumeric and dark berries can stain your teeth. Swishing your mouth with water after having foods or drinks that stain teeth can help reduce the build up of staining. • Flossing: Floss at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles that your toothbrush can’t reach. Water flossers are helpful for those who find traditional flossing difficult, or interdental brushes can be an alternative to floss for cleaning between teeth. • Remember, personal needs can vary, so it’s important to follow the advice of your dental professional tailored to your specific oral health. We believe having a healthy mouth is vital to our well being and are offering West London Chambers members a complimentary professional hygienist teeth cleaning when booking your oral health assessment with our award winning dentists, valid until 31st March 2024. It’s time for us all to champion green aviation By Parmjit Dhanda, Executive Director of Back Heathrow

Last year, our organisation (Back Heathrow) brought together a coalition of politicians, trade unions and industrialists in Westminster – to call for the government to seize the moment and enable the UK to become a global leader in the refining and export of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is an alternative to traditional fossil-fuel based kerosene, which can deliver up to 70% carbon savings in the lifecycle of the fuel, by using recycled waste materials like feedstocks, cooking oil, and other kinds of waste – instead of crude oil. Representatives of our two biggest trade unions, the GMB and Unite the Union, warned that if our politicians do not act quickly, the UK will be left importing SAF from the USA and Europe. A call that was backed up by the private sector and the dozens of cross-party peers and MPs that joined us. On November 27th, the day after our parliamentary event, the world’s first transatlantic passenger journey powered entirely by SAF took flight from Heathrow to JFK. A sign that these fuels are for today, not decades down the line.

let’s talkbusiness

As our political parties continue to lock horns in the run-up to the next election, a great opportunity has arisen to unite the country, drive growth and protect the planet. This is just one flight, but the government has mandated all civil aircraft must have at least 10% of the fuel in their tanks sourced from SAF by 2030. So, the UK has a choice; import millions of gallons of American fuel or produce our own - which would help create 60,000 jobs across the UK. Without urgent action to increase production of these greener aviation fuels here, the UK looks flat-footed. In the US, President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is pouring $4 billion into SAF production. The motivation is twofold - help save the planet, and boost the US economy by producing millions of green jobs. That, without a doubt,

needs to be the motivation of the UK’s government too. Whilst our next government can’t magic up new money, helping to grow this fledging industry into a much bigger one will deliver economic benefits for decades to come. Politicians, across the political divide, are starting to show their support for SAFs, but we need more. Whoever wins the election should be looking ahead to their first King’s Speech as a defining moment for the UK aviation industry and the million jobs that depend on it – including here in west London. A bill that paves the way for a global SAF industry and an additional £10 billion GVA of economic growth would be welcome - for the country and our planet. Heathrow’s emphatic backing of SAF and its provision of big incentives for airlines to use it, puts our local airport at the heart of what we hope will be a global change. Alan Rides and Sally Smith of West London Chambers were very pleased to be with Back Heathrow at the parliamentary event to mark the first flight powered entirely by SAF from Heathrow to JFK.

COP28:

The train has left the station

By Robert Godwin, CEO at Lamington Group

13th December was a historic day as negotiations conclude at COP28 UAE in Dubai. For the first time ever, 200 countries have agreed to ‘start the transition away from fossil fuels to achieve net zero by 2050’. This is a monumental achievement given our worldwide economic dependency on fossil fuels and the source of wealth it holds, a particular loss for developing nations with large untapped reserves. A compromise to reach an agreement for all countries was never going to yield a result that worked for everyone, and there is intentional ambiguity in the text that requires interpretation at a country and boardroom level. Still, importantly, the train has left the station. It was a remarkable privilege to be invited by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to speak and be part of the world’s most important sustainability conference. Though the part I played was of little significance, the impression that it has made on me, and all of its attendees, is undoubtedly significant. The breadth and depth of topics, debates, presentations and conversations, across social and environmental issues from all 4 corners of the world, were difficult to grasp or even fully comprehend. COP28 is way beyond talking about just carbon, seeking to deliver ‘just’ (fair) transitions, and social and environmental justice, for all. COP is a coming of minds with a common vision to build a better future. I’m not a historian but I cannot see many ideas or events in the past that have united humanity quite like this.

The severity of our situation and the many challenges ahead remain immense, and we need a 3-4x increase in investment to flow into the green space by 2030 to stay on track for net zero by 2050 (roughly 4$ trillion per year). I witnessed serious innovation from brilliant minds on show, particularly around the energy transition to low or no carbon energy. But I also found it hard not to notice the significant marketing expenditure (with HUGE LCD screens), promoting some states (mainly the rich oil ones) as going green, with big bold utopian visions of the future, which were impressive in scale and ambition, but seem detached on how nature works.

Lamington Group/room 2 are Chamber members. In 2023 room 2 won ‘Best New Business’ in our Business Awards and in 2022 Lamington Group won ‘Best Green Business’. Lamington Group is now a b corp certified company as of November 2023. The Chamber is holding a Chiswick Business Breakfast at room2 on 6th March we hope to see you there!

However, with 2/3rds of the event open to the public, one of the strongest legacies of COP28 is the immeasurable impact of inspiration in the minds of the next generations who visited in record numbers. Younger generations are rising into the workplace, with many holding disbelief of how we got ourselves into this situation, but are impassioned and increasingly educated on finding solutions to fix it. Unite. Act. & Deliver.

COP is a coming of minds with a common vision to build a better future. I’m not a historian but I cannot see many ideas or events in the past that have united humanity quite like this. let’s talkbusiness

Chris Parker Who are you? I am Chris Parker, and I am the Marketing and Programme Manager for Chiswick Cinema. I am a graduate of the Northern Film School, Leeds as well my background in filmmaking, I have over ten years of experience cinema and film festival operation.

What’s your business all about? I do not believe a cinema is a place just to show films and I do not think that is what west London wants from the Chiswick Cinema. I have been determined to open up the bar spaces in a creative, community orientated way whether that is through supporting local schools and groups; giving a platform to artists or other businesses; or by providing a space for debate. We do also show films extremely well however, and with sixty Q&As under our belt since opening, we are at the forefront of demonstrating how innovative and dynamic a cinema programme can be. We are a local, partnership driven community orientated cinema that has won a considerable reputation as a platform for British film and TVs both historical and contemporary. As good as they are, it is vital to be so much more than just Marvel.

Three words to describe yourself? Creative, committed, candid.

Ideal Customer? We screen content that covers all ages, but the unifying thing is the ability to invest in and the willingness to be immersed in a great story. Someone with an open mind is all we need.

Biggest achievements? I applied to volunteer for a major international film festival during the pandemic having been made redundant from a full-time job in the run up. Within a few weeks I was not doing the front of house role I expected but I was instead leading all the marketing, event management, partnership creation, customer service and operations for the festival as a senior manager. The festival was a huge success and was one of the only ones on the planet to take place in person (and safely, I might add) during the pandemic. I see it as a testament to my drive, capability, and ambition. Saying that, opening a cinema during a pandemic was a new struggle all of its own. The real achievements through both have been how open, honest, and committed I have remained throughout adversity and how well a team has bought into the goals set for both, how well they clicked around and invested in those mammoth projects alongside me.

Biggest gripe? Finding a balance between running a business and having time to do your own thing can be difficult. It is such a pleasure to present, and present so well, other people’s films, but I think all cinema operators must in some way harbour the feeling that the film on screen should be their own.

Your inspiration? Revelation through storytelling is the most unifying, everlasting thing we might have so contributing a meaningful, resonant experience – or providing a platform for one – is the spark that started my journey. We are all out to move other people, and whatever kind of business it is we do is just something of that to a different degree.

Philosophy in Business? Passion, patience, determination, and enthusiasm.

Sporting Hero? Lewis Hamilton – he worked relentlessly from a council estate upbringing to becoming the greatest driver of all time while using his reputation to push for positive social change. A legendary sporting figure.

Biggest tip for success? Consistency is key but so is maintaining self-belief and commitment in the face of adversity. A lot has happened to me, but through some brilliant, inspiring friends and colleagues, there has always been a way to keep going forward despite everything.

Revelation through storytelling is the most unifying, everlasting thing we might have so contributing a meaningful, resonant experience – or providing a platform for one – is the spark that started my journey. their own.
