President’s Report
Twelve months ago, I ended my 2020 21 report by anticipating that this year would be disrupted by Covid restrictions at the beginning of the summer and by building works at the end of the summer, and I urged everyone to “make the most of those golden few months of summer in between ”
Well, the past year was indeed impacted by Covid restrictions. As the season began, we had indoor capacity limits and we required our junior members to pre register their attendance at nipper training, which ran a modified program Our lifesaving operations ran at minimum service levels. The requirements on our volunteers to be vaccinated slowly increased over the summer to the point where currently, anyone who volunteers for the Club (in any capacity) is considered an emergency service worker and is required to have received three Covid vaccinations/boosters
We certainly made the most of “those golden few months of summer ”, with our lifesavers experiencing one of their busiest Januarys ever. Starting with an extra patrol on a hot Friday New Year’s Eve, over the following month our volunteer surf lifesavers performed nine rescues, 225 preventative actions, 58 minor and one major first aid cases and kept an eye on over 60,000 beachgoers. Between our lifesavers and LSV lifeguards operating the Kingston rescue watercraft service from our clubhouse, sixteen people were rescued from the mouth of Patterson River in one weekend, prompting fresh calls for people to never swim near the river mouth resulting in extensive coverage across media such as 3AW, all the major television news services, Herald Sun and Surf Life Saving Foundation. We met with Kingston Council and Parks Victoria to develop initiatives to deter people from swimming near the mouth of Patterson River and received great assistance from Council with temporary signage and social media messages Later, towards the end of the month, we saw swarms of jellyfish on our beaches which resulted in large numbers of minor first aid cases and had Channel Seven and The Age reaching out to us for comment
Proposed building extension works
Unfortunately, the building works which I had hoped would be nearly finished by now are still yet to begin Significant delays have occurred, caused by various reasons, including Covid, but most significantly by the fact that over the year Kingston Council have turned over four different project managers, with the entire build essentially grinding to a holt during this time. Due partly to these delays and the current escalating construction costs, the project is now estimated to be somewhere between $1.1m and $1.7m over budget. We’re working closely with Life Saving Victoria, the state government and Council to ensure this funding gap can be filled. As I write this, we ’ re still being assured by Council that works will begin in the next couple of months. Only time will tell. Thank you to the outgoing Building Extension Sub Committee who have done a sensational job ensuring the Club’s interests are fulfilled during the planning of this project; David Hasell, Rik Price, Stephen Griffiths, Jon Treloar, Shane Rowley and Scott Rosicka. Thanks in advance to the new building construction sub committee.
While I’m thanking people, special thanks to Jemma Harrison who was essentially our acting Junior Coordinator for most of this (and past) years. As well as coordinating the Club’s school programs and patrolling the beach as a lifesaver, Jemma also had a sense of obligation to step forward to ensure our junior activities programs continued in the absence of a Junior Coordinator and to be a member of the Club Executive to ensure nipper activities had a voice and remained front of mind. Sadly for the Club, Jemma and her family have moved interstate and their absence is already being greatly felt.
Unfortunately, the difficulties in finding volunteers to help with the junior activities program is reflected across all Club activities (and, I understand, across society more generally). Just four lifesavers account for half of all patrol hours volunteered this summer. There are several vacancies on the Club Board and, for the first time in my memory, multiple committee meetings were postponed or cancelled because we didn’t have enough people in (virtual) attendance to form a quorum (five members). As I write this, we have received just four nominations to be on the committee for the coming year I urge every single member to consider how you actively contribute to the Club and how you do, or could, make a volunteer contribution there is a job to suit everyone, from actively patrolling the beach as a lifesaver through to helping with a fundraiser, from getting wet helping at nippers to doing some admin at home.
With all of that in mind, I cannot thank enough those who do volunteer their time to ensure the Club can continue to provide our invaluable surf rescue and junior activity programs. I know your time is precious and we’ re privileged that you choose the Club as the cause you donate your time to. None of the things we read about in this report would be possible without you thank you, thank you, thank you
See you all on the beach soon.
Ben Rooks PresidentSecretary’s Report
On behalf of Carrum Surf Life Saving Committee, it gives me great pleasure to present the Annual reports for the 2021/22 Season together with financial statements.
It has been a great pleasure to be the Secretary and work alongside dedicated people that work tirelessly to continuously improve our club for the future.
The Carrum SLSC committee meet every month and come together for an annual planning meeting to review the year and plan for the next season.
I would like to especially thankyou Jemma Harrison for taking on the role of junior coordinator and all her hard work with Nippers and running the school programs.
I would also like to thank the building committee chairman Ben Rooks and the members of the committee Stephen Griffiths (club Captain), Justin O’Halloran (treasurer), Shane Rowley (Vice President, Jon Treloar, Cath Paulsen, Scott Rosicka, Rik Price, and David Hasell for all their hard work in the planning of building extension.
I would also like to acknowledge Shane Rowley for his tireless work in organising our two major fundraising events for the year, the Comedy night, and the Trivia night thanks Shane.
Our Hall hires have been down this season which has been due to covid and the upcoming building renovations this has been a loss of revenue for the club, though the future looks bright for hall hires judging by the increase in requests for hall hiring.
Membership is also down due to Covid, the club hopes that with the new building extension that membership will increase.
There are also a significant number of unnamed people who do their “extra” for the club, many thanks to you all.
You never know when and where you can help? Volunteering is always rewarding, and you will always feel better for giving up a little bit of your time, not to mention meeting new people in the meantime.
Thank you to all our club members and volunteers that make this Club a better place. I am looking forward to exciting times ahead

Once again, this season was challenging with the changes still happening due to covid and other changes that happened within lifesaving. I would like to say thank you to every single person that contributed this season patrolling, water safety for nippers, the parents/guardians, and the nippers for making the club what it is.
A big thank you to Charlie Barton for persevering with the rosters again this year as I know they changed things yet again and made extra work for you. Also, Ben Rooks for helping get things done when I couldn’t be there and helping with everything in the background. To Cath Paulsen for answering all my questions and helping train our members.
With all that said I realised there is a lot more to do in this role than I realised and glad I had the people behind me that I did helping me learn and move into the role somewhat smoothly. I have some ideas that I want to work on over the off season and over the next few seasons to help the club grow. I look forward to helping the club grow and watching the young ones come through the club and join the patrol team on the beach.
I want to say a big thank you to all patrolling members that were involved in any of the rescues throughout this season especially those that put in a massive effort early January alongside the RWC service where they rescued what seemed like a never ending number of people. If it weren’t for all the training and requals we do, all these rescues could have ended a lot worse.
If there is any course you are interested in doing or have any ideas for the club, please don’t hesitate to contact me as I would love to hear people’s suggestions on how we can grow this already great club to become bigger and better.
I hope to see everyone back on the beach next season.
You
