SUMMER ISSUE

4TH OF JULY GRAND CELEBRATION SUMMER ROSÉ TASTING Q&A WITH ADAM MILLER APPY HOUR

S

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE to get construction underway. While overcoming supply shortages across the country has been a challenge, early indicators show improvement. The good news is, we’ve closed on over 20 clubowned lots in 2021. We anticipate at least five more this summer. Our goal is to have 17 spec homes underway by third quarter 2021. ARB continues to be very busy with additional builds outside of our building partners, with nearly 40 homes in progress. Our drive to 500 homes by 2025 has never looked better!

A lot has happened during the first six months of 2021. Phase 1 is well underway, our dog park is now open, the River Park has been approved by the county, and real estate continues to be hot throughout the Lowcountry. Our partners Peacock & Lewis and Choate continue to make great progress on the 4-Seasons Veranda, and we’re on track to open in Spring 2022. Throughout the summer, we’ll take a look at additional Clubhouse work that may make sense while our partners remain onsite. The Master Plan in its entirety encompasses both new amenities as well as updates to current amenities and infrastructure. Jeff Dekruif, Assistant GM/CFO, and our management team have been taking a close look at how these projects can be accomplished within our Capital Reserve Fund, from golf course renovation to future road and drainage needs. Real estate is in high demand at Berkeley Hall and we’re moving right along to meet that need. The Club has agreements with multiple builders, all working diligently 2

We’re exceptionally excited to have the USGA return to Berkeley Hall for the 2021 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, September 23-30. Read more about it in our golf section and share the excitement! Thank you to everyone for their support in helping us keep our community safe and adhering to the adjusted speed limits of 25mph. It’s a busy time, with construction, young families, and over 100 new members, and very important to use caution when driving around the community. Stop signs are strategically placed to keep us safe, and it’s up to all of us to proceed carefully within the gates. Our community is truly special and for that I say "Thank You" to our entire BHC team. The labor shortage has created many challenges, yet I am so proud of their response. I believe our dedication and commitment to deliver the highest level of Member Experience is unmatched within gated communities across the country and especially here in our corner of the Lowcountry!

community news

hase I of our $5.1M Master Plan has gained momentum as we head into the summer months. It was early April when we broke ground on our 4-Seasons Veranda at the official April 9th groundbreaking. Many of you were there and shared in the true excitement of that day. Now, interior work has begun in preparation of our renovated Mixed Grille dining venue and kitchen upgrade. The Clubhouse and dining in the Berkeley and Tap Rooms, as well as private Tuscan Wine Room, will remain open for the majority of the construction period, allowing members to enjoy dining and Club amenities. Refinements in the Grand Hall entry and additional 6

TUESDAY, JULY 20 | 5-7PM luffton’s Burnt Church Distillery is steeped in local history, and has a great story to share, along with hand-crafted spirits. Join us for a Tasting Tour on Tuesday, July 20 from 5-7pm and immerse yourself in their craft process of authentic Lowcountry spirits. “Thoughtfully crafted for the discernible palate and inquisitive mind. From the bottle you’ll reach for each day to create a spin on your favorite cocktail to ones that are pulled out for special occasions only.” As they say, they’ve got something for everyone. Here’s just a few: You’ll enjoy tasting these and more on the tasting tour!

Anita’s Choice Six Grain Bourbon Whiskey: Named for Lowcountry native Anita Pollitzer. Johnny Fever Bourbon Whiskey: Created in homage to a man who had a special impact on distillery co-founder, Billy Watterson. Bluffton Whiskey: Hand-crafted with Carolina Gold Rice and aged gently in charred white oak barrels. Burnt Church Vodka: Inspiration for the distillery is as deeply-rooted in our community as the storied tales of the past; from the notes and flavors of each hand-crafted spirit to the historic streets that bear their names. Devil’s Elbow Gin: In 1718, the Lowcountry was carved into several land

grants – one of them was named Devil’s Elbow Barony, where present day Bluffton, SC resides. The perfect name for our premium and flavored gins. Good stories and great spirits make for an incredible tasting flight, served up with a craft cocktail and light bites provided by Berkeley Hall Club. If you’re more in the mood for fresh-made brick oven pizza, Pizza Co is located just next door. Conveniently located in Bluffton, you'll find it’s an easy drive of 10 minutes or so. “Hamnet” by Maggie O’Farrell July 5 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm One of our greatest living novelists resurrects the short life of Hamnet Shakespeare, in a lyrically written and emotionally devastating account of the Bard’s only son. A stunning new departure for Maggie O'Farrell's fiction, Hamnet is the heart-stopping story behind Shakespeare's most famous play. On a summer's day in 1596, a young girl in Stratford-upon-Avon takes to her bed with a fever. Her twin brother, Hamnet, searches everywhere for help. Their mother, Agnes, is over a mile away, in the garden where she grows medicinal herbs. Their father is working in London. Hamnet is a novel inspired by the son of a famous playwright. Above all, it is a tender and unforgettable reimagining of a boy whose life has been all but forgotten, but whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays ever written. Review: Waterstones

“Same Kind of Different As Me” by Ron Hall and Denver Moore August 2 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm In 1988, Ron Hall, an international art dealer based in Dallas, did a bad thing. He cheated on his wife. His extramarital dalliance changed his life, though not in the way one might expect. Almost 30 years later, Hall, 72, has become a tireless advocate for the homeless. He's also a best-selling author, whose moving book, Same Kind of Different As Me, chronicles what happened in the aftermath and how it changed him - forever. The full title of The New York Times best-seller says it all. Same Kind of Different As Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together. Hall's co-author, Denver Moore, was the "modern-day slave," a homeless ex-con introduced to Hall and his wife through a series of events that Hall considers divinely guided. Review: Dallas News

Bette with husband Dr. Ray Caffrey. Our beloved BHC artist Bette F. Caffrey has generously donated her artistic talents to many Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation Charity Cup auctions over the years. This past May, she was honored with a small reception in the Grand Hall and her lovely painting “The Flag” is now in place, gracing our Clubhouse. The painting was personally purchased by the 2020 BHCF board trustees and donated in Bette's honor to Berkeley Hall. JULY/AUGUST 2021

BERKELEY HALL GOLF

WITH KIERAN

Speed is king on the greens. It takes time to master speed, but it is worth it.

KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF fter a fabulous spring season, we have hit the ground running for the summer. With the hot and steamy summer weather comes the occasional thunderstorm, so please be careful if you are out on the courses when the siren sounds. The courses are continuing to be busy, and we are excited to have many new members enjoying the facilities at Berkeley Hall. After a tough year, we are seeing some more travel again amongst the members, and I hope that some of you have been able to enjoy some vacation time once again! For those of you that are in the Lowcountry during the

summer we hope to see you around the Club, and perhaps you will be able to take advantage of the Summer Reciprocal Program and play some of the local courses – contact the Golf Staff for more details. We are looking forward to our July 4th celebrations at the Club and we have a Nine & Wine event lined up on July 3rd, as well as our traditional Flag Day event on July 4th. As July rolls around we are usually gearing up to host the Players Amateur, but instead we are looking forward to hosting the US Women’s Mid Am in September this year. No doubt the golf that is played will be

equally stellar and we eagerly await the crowning of this year’s Champion. Also, ahead for Berkeley Hall members, are our Fall events. Many are already filling up fast, so if you are keen to play, advance registration is suggested.

SIGN UP FOR OP 36! Join us for the fun game changing 8-week Operation 36 golf academy led by Berkeley Hall’s Krista Dunton. See your scores drop, as we focus on scoring and an on-course learning experience. The concept behind Berkeley Hall's Operation 36 program is to give a beginner golfer, intermediate golfer, or players returning to golf, an opportunity to jump start their golf journey. Our curriculum is challenging and social, and allows you to track your progress, log your practice time, and watch supportive golf instructional videos via our Operation 36 app.

The best part is that everyone will get out during the program to play and enjoy the BHC courses. Much of the instruction is game-based, so it's both fun and educational. Level One starts at 25 yards off the green. From there, once you’ve mastered the skills necessary to shoot 36, you move back to 50 yards, then 100, then 150 yards. Each level peels the onion back a little more as it relates to the fundamentals of golf. The hour-long academy classes focus on one or two key objectives to develop your skills. Supervised practice guide you through games and specific guidelines of how and what to practice. On-course matches will test your skills! To sign-up for Operation 36,

email Krista at kdunton@me.com or contact the Golf Shop at 843.815.8444. For more information visit www.operation36golf.com. Cost: $590

BERKELEY HALL HOSTS 2021 U.S. WOMEN'S MID-AMATEUR Anticipation is building as Berkeley Hall prepares to welcome the 2021 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship to our North Course on September 23-30. “The opportunity to host some of the most talented amateur players in the world is something that we have been preparing for, and we are exceptionally honored to host the 34th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Berkeley Hall,” said Adam Kushner, GM/COO. The USGA Women’s Mid-Am will be Berkeley Hall Club’s third USGA championship, as the club hosted both the Men’s and Women’s USGA State Team Championships in 2005. The championship field consists of 132 players, who earned entry into the championship via sectional qualifying at sites nationwide or through an exemption category. Players will compete in two rounds of stroke play, 18

after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers for match play. “It’s important to have an avenue for golfers to enjoy the game at a competitive level and the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is one of those elite tournaments that provides just that,” said Stephanie George, Berkeley Hall Head Golf Professional. “We’re excited to watch this tournament unfold at Berkeley Hall Club and see which player

gets their bid into the U.S. Women’s Open Championship.” “To bring this level of friendly competition to Berkeley Hall is a great opportunity for our Club, and underscores our commitment to support women’s golf,” said Kieran Staunton, Director of Golf. WITH KRISTA DUNTON Aug 30-Sept 1 | Sept 16-18 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

BERKELEY HALL

GOLF ACADEMY

DAY 1

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

WHEN IT COMES TO SOIL, ADAM MILLER IS A VISIONARY.

20

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

How he came to gain that vision is another story. Adam grew up in the coal region of Pennsylvania, an area known more for its coal mines than golf courses. With an interest in engineering, he headed off to Virginia Tech and it was there he turned to the business of Agronomy. Here, he tells us more about what, and who led him to his success in the field and how that ties into achieving excellence at Berkeley Hall. BHC: Your path began and continues to grow with the strength of an important influence. Can you share some details? ADAM: It’s important in the turf business to find someone who cares about your training and your future. I found that in my mentor Pete Wendt, at both Kinloch Golf Club and Woodmont Golf Club. Pete challenged me every day of the week, but at the same time cared about me and my family. Currently, he is Director of Golf Courses and Grounds at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, where he just completed a major renovation of the historic Blue Golf Course. Over the years, Pete’s brought over 40 superintendents to where they are today, going back to his days at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club and Kinloch. I’d say he's developed one of the best superintendent networks in the country, and through Pete, I’ve established connections with most of them, talking to at least one of them each day, along with Pete two to three times a week.

Your surface is only as good as the soil underneath the turf. – Adam Miller Director of Agronomy

BHC: Your mantra when it comes to sustainable soil: ADAM: I believe creating a true sustainable soil is the key to providing the playing conditions expected at Berkeley Hall. Your surface is only as good as the soil underneath the turf. Creating a sustainable soil allows us to use less nutrients, pesticides, and water. It also allows for more consistency during drought and wet periods. BHC: On the North and the South Courses?

ADAM: My vision for Berkeley Hall is to balance the soil chemistry and soil porosity on both golf courses regardless if the soil is sand or clay. BHC: Share a bit about you personally: ADAM: I met my wife, Heather, on a blind date set up by co-workers in Richmond. She unfortunately went to UVA, (still a point, of goodnatured sports rivalry!) Heather and I enjoy traveling, the outdoors, and a nice bottle of red wine. Here in the Lowcountry, we like to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets and appreciate the beauty of the area. BHC: Forward Vision ADAM: My background in capital improvement projects and renovation will help strategically plan future projects at Berkeley Hall. I look forward to providing value to our membership while also being a steward of the budget. It always goes back to the soil, and from there, we will build our courses for the future, in the true manner of Berkeley Hall’s impeccable course design.
