As we head into 2023, it’s remarkable to see how much we’ve accomplished together here at Berkeley Hall. You can feel the energy and it’s been truly wonderful to experience so many great events with Membership in our new spaces that allow us to enjoy our Lowcountry lifestyle as a community.

The beauty of our Lowcountry setting is one of the things we cherish most about our coastal home. Of course, no one captures this better than member/photographer Elizabeth Angelone, whose work graces this cover. She casts an intimate view of our “local life” and you can see more on pages 8-9.

At Berkeley Hall, our momentum keeps building. We’ve welcomed well over 60 new members to the Club and look forward to more new neighbors with 54 homes under construction and more under review.

New families and enhanced amenities to enjoy keep us vibrant and growing and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

On the greens, both courses welcome members to premier golf with exceptional playability. Our agronomy team completed successful agronomic and aesthetic enhancements that will take us forward past these winter months into beautiful Spring conditions. The expanded Fazio Green has been so popular, it’s just fun to see everyone out there enjoying it.

One of the things we like to talk about is continuous improvement, and as we strive to understand member expectations and overall satisfaction, we recently sent a member survey to garner your response.

As a Top 50 Platinum Club, we share our greatest appreciation for our dedicated and talented team, as well as our Membership and board, who understand the value of continued enhancement and reinvestment in our community.

Please join us in celebrating this prestigious Platinum Club status! I share this momentous achievement with great appreciation for our Membership, it’s all of you who help make us the best community in the Lowcountry.

Thank you for all your support as we endeavor to provide the best of the ‘Berkeley Experience!’ I hope you are as excited about 2023 as we are!

erenity and beauty surround us here at Berkeley Hall, and with each new year’s renewal we cherish our treasured surroundings anew.

Celebrating the splendor of our Lowcountry setting has become a Berkeley Experience tradition, as Elizabeth Angelone, member/ photographer captures these exquisite views of our wildlife and nature, as only she can.

With a dreamlike quality, among the lush leaves and embrace of branches, this Great Egret is right at home, gracing our special New Year cover. Elizabeth’s artistry brings us in, for a closer look. Her work casts an intimate view of our “local life” and we are forever grateful.

Grateful to be here, grateful to share our native marsh grasses, waters and foliage with our Lowcountry neighbors that glide in for early morning swims and afternoon wings that bring them to roost.

“Foggy mornings as the sun rises and late, golden afternoons are magical here. My views are forever changing and it’s such moments that transcend the light, that always pull me in,” shares Elizabeth. Each new day feels special and with the ever-changing hues of nature that form her palette, she brings this world into view for the rest of us.

Monique Grant is stunned when Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo grants an exclusive interview to her over more seasoned journalists, but when she’s also chosen to publish Evelyn’s final confessions after her death, she learns the 79-year-old actress has enough life experience for them both.

Growing up poor in Hell’s Kitchen, young Evelyn Herrera changes her name, and climbs the entertainment-industry ladder one husband at a time until she hits Oscar gold. Evelyn plays up her bombshell figure and hides her Cuban roots by dying her hair blonde – the first of many lies she’ll tell over the course of her life to prove she deserves her place in the spotlight.

Secret Life of Sunflowers” by Marta Molnar

When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sisterin-law.

Johanna inherited Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They were all she had, and they weren't worth anything. She was a 28-year-old widow with a baby in the 1800s, without any means of supporting herself, living in Paris where she barely spoke the language. Yet she managed to introduce Vincent's legacy to the world. The inspiration couldn't come at a better time for Emsley. With her business failing, an unexpected love, and family secrets unraveling, can she find answers in the past?

In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”

Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.

“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to.

DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.

DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.

“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

ON THE GREENS: LOOK AHEAD.

s I embark on my third season at Berkeley Hall Club, it’s been a true pleasure to see how far we’ve come on both the North and South Courses. They both present unique challenges and the Agronomy team has made significant strides in the past year to achieve a good number of our goals.

The new Fazio Green project was superbly executed as our team and the construction team worked seamlessly to improve this Berkeley Hall amenity. Each day, it’s now common to see members out there working on their putting and positive member feedback continues to grow as more members enjoy the new scope of the green’s design and increased size. Once Spring and Summer roll around, we’ll see the grass mature and will be able to maximize its full potential.

Agronomic practices implemented over the past two summers are now having an impact on the playability of both golf courses, as the drill-and-fill has created firmer, drier and healthier surfaces. In addition, the sand channel, topdressing, and deep aeration were instrumental in coming through an August which brought almost 25” of rainfall.

These processes are disruptive, yet pay off exceedingly well when we experience such stressful weather conditions and position us to provide the premier conditions required.

Great courses require an excellent team, and great consideration to

our culture and direction will continue to lead us forward. Utilizing contract labor, part time and seasonal employees, to round out the exceptional work of our Agronomy team has had an enormous impact on the quality and integrity of our course work.

As we enter 2023, we will continue to build on our successful agronomic practices as we look toward North Course Native area improvement, new irrigation pump stations, along with other future projects.

With a continued goal to improve Berkeley Hall courses and enhance the member experience, we thank membership for your support.

Great courses require an excellent team, and great consideration to our culture and direction will continue to lead us forward.

Meet Brent D'Amelio: BHC Director of Wellness SPA

Welcome Brent D'Amelio, Berkeley Hall's new Director of Wellness.

He brings over 10 years of experience directing fitness and wellness activities in the private golf club industry, along

with innovative programming for enhanced Member satisfaction.

Prior to joining us, Brent served as Director of Fitness and Wellness at Houston Country Club, in Texas. Among the Top 100 Platinum Clubs of America, the Club features a 30,000+ square foot, state-of-the-art wellness center where Brent oversaw fitness, wellness, spa services and racquets sports along

Please join us in welcoming Brent to the Lowcountry, and when you get a chance, stop by the Fitness Center and welcome him to our community!

Below, she shares her swimming philosophy, that has taken her, quite literally, around the world.

BHC: What do you love most about swimming?

ES: I love being in the water swimming laps, it puts you in a meditative state. It always amazes me what problems can be solved there. I’ll never skip my swim; it leaves me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

BHC: How many laps a day?

With the cooler days of winter, it’s certainly nice to jump in the perfectly warm waters of our indoor, heated pool. For some members, it was a main draw to joining the Club, as not all have indoor aquatic facilities. Here, we catch up with Ellen Schraeder, a lifelong swimmer and believer in the beauty of lap lanes! While she also

has a home pool, our Fitness Center indoor pool was a huge attraction when first considering the Club. (For a full look at her true swimmer’s dedication, view her video on the member website among “Our Stories” videos.) While we’ve featured Ellen in a previous issue, we wanted to recap here.

ES: I usually swim for a half hour to 40 minutes straight without stopping. A combination of freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. I don’t actually count but it’s close to 3/4 of a mile daily.

BHC: Best feature on Member App?

ES: Pool conditions, naturally!

BHC: Favorite swim?

ES: At Gene’s 50th college reunion at Notre Dame – Swimming in their aquatic center, I felt like a kid again!
