ACTIVITY GUIDE

A MESSAGE FROM MARGOT HARRINGTON, DIRECTOR OF AUXILIARY PROGRAMS margot.harrington@berwickacademy.org 207-384-6199

Spring is here, which means it’s time to think and dream about summer! Warm temperatures, playing outside, fresh air, and a wide variety of programs on the Hilltop! Join Berwick Academy for a summer to remember as we kick off our programming the week of June 7, and a full slate of programming for all ages runs through July. There is something for everyone from sports to cooking and STEAM to the arts; we will be busy moving and grooving at Bulldog central. Registration opens for Berwick Academy families on Monday, March 29 at 9 a.m. Registration for the general public will open on Wednesday, March 31 at 9 a.m. on the Berwick Academy website. Families are asked to create an online profile that will allow you to explore all of the fantastic programs we are offering this summer. Program spaces are first come first serve, so do not hesitate to sign up quickly. We will have waitlists in place as programs fill. Programs will close for online registration at 3 p.m. on the Monday prior to the beginning of the session.

We encourage families to look over the summer offerings together, as you never know what your child will want to try – you may be surprised! Weeklong summer programs are a wonderful opportunity for young people to try something different, make new friends, and build their skill sets. Berwick Academy is excited to bring you a full program calendar this summer while continuing our commitment to safety. We are following all COVID-19 guidelines and protocols that allow youth to have an enriching in-person experience. See you on the Hilltop,

KEEPING BERWICK SAFE

FACE COVERINGS All youth and instructors will maintain physical distancing when possible. Youth and instructors will be required to wear approved face coverings. There will be “mask breaks” at certain times, such as snack/lunch. Approved face coverings can be disposable or cloth masks. Disposable face masks should be 3-ply and cloth face coverings should be 2-ply. Gaiters, 1-ply masks, and face shields are not permitted. Cloth face coverings should be laundered nightly.

MOVEMENT AROUND CAMPUS/PHYSICAL DISTANCING Movement on campus will be controlled and directed to maintain physical distancing. While indoors and outdoors, youth will be seated with spacing to minimize transmission risk. Youth are expected to maintain a 6 foot distance when possible.

HAND HYGIENE Youth and instructors will be encouraged to wash their hands as often as possible throughout the day. Hand sanitizer dispensers will be available in every room and outdoor location to ensure regular access.

VISITORS/PARENTS ON CAMPUS POLICY Visitors and parents are asked to remain in their cars while on campus. Should the need arise for a campus visit, parents and any other visitors should contact Margot Harrington at margot.harrington@berwickacademy.org or 207-384-6199

ENHANCED CLEANING/DISINFECTION SCHEDULE Daily cleaning practices will be compliant with CDC recommendations, including the types of cleaning products used and the frequency of cleaning. Special attention will be paid to the cleaning of high touch surfaces throughout the day.

HEALTH SCREENING Families are asked to monitor their household members for symptoms, including fever, and avoid bringing children to the Hilltop who have experienced a fever within the past 48 hours or exhibited COVID-related symptoms. Daily self-health checks will be required for all prior to coming to campus. Youth who develop symptoms during the day will be separated from others, and parents/guardians will be contacted to arrange pick-up. A link to the self-health screening will be sent with a registration confirmation email one week prior to the start of the program.

AIR PURIFIERS Each indoor space has been outfitted with an air purification system designed to filter the air in each space 4x per hour. These units utilize exterior, carbon, and HEPA filters. Additionally, buildings with air handling systems have been upgraded to a more robust MERV-13 filter, far exceeding state guidelines.

EVENTS Our primary focus will be on safely delivering our summer programs to the youth. Given the complexity of keeping the community safe, we will not host in-person family events that correspond with your child’s program.

General Behavioral Policy All participants are expected to follow a set of general rules of behavior, including respecting themselves, others, the School property, equipment, or materials. Staff will review the rules and policies with each group at the beginning of each session. Berwick Academy does not tolerate behaviors that do not promote the best experience for all participants and staff. We expect that the following major rules will be consistently followed by all participants: • No fighting or physical violence • No bullying, teasing, or making fun of other participants • No inappropriate language • No endangering the health and safety of other participants or staff • No inflicting self-harm • No damaging or stealing property The School follows a “Three Strike” discipline policy with respect to violations of these major rules: • First offense: Following an incident in which a participant violates a major rule, staff will redirect the participant to more appropriate behavior and review the program rules and why they are necessary. The School will notify the guardian of the nature of the incident. • Second offense: If the participant engages in conduct that violates a major rule (whether the same rule that was violated in the first offense or a different rule), a staff member will again review the rules with the participant. The School will notify the guardian and require the participant to leave the program for the rest of the day. • Third offense: Following a third incident of a major rule violation (whether the same rule that was violated in the first or second offense or a different rule), the participant will go to the of-

fice for dismissal from the program. Following a meeting between the School and the guardian, the participant will be dismissed permanently from the program. Please Note: No refunds or proration of tuition will be issued for dismissals resulting from a behavioral issue or violation of auxiliary program rules. With respect to all other behavior issues by any participant, the School will take appropriate action to address such behavior and will engage the guardian as necessary to ensure that the participant addresses the issue. The School reserves the right to dismiss any participant who consistently fails to respect themselves, others, the School property, equipment, and materials. Inclement Weather Policy We do our best to remain open and follow an indoor schedule on rainy days. In the event of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or tornado, the campus will be closed. No refunds or tuition proration shall be issued in the event of such a closure. We will notify you if make-up days can be arranged. Nut “Aware” Campus We maintain a “nut aware” campus. We ask faculty, staff, and families to leave peanut and tree nut containing foods and products off campus to help ensure our nut allergic community’s safety

STEAM LITTLE ADVENTURERS NATURE PROGRAM

GUNDALOW: PISCATAQUA REGION

Little Adventurers is an outdoor education experience for our youngest adventurers. We will spend most of our day hiking Berwick Academy’s trail system, snacking in the outdoor classroom, nature journaling, mapping, creating art with nature’s natural materials, and playing in the woods! Our goal at Little Adventurers Nature Program is to foster a love of the outdoors!

The Gundalow Company brings you an exploration of the Piscataqua Region through games, STEM activities, and exploration. For thousands of years, humans have been living and impacting the region where we live. We will explore the history and environment of this region through outdoor experiences. We truly believe if you experience it you will care about it, and if you care about it we will protect it. To wrap up the program, participants will all get a free pass to come out for a sail with us this summer on the Gundalow, PISCATAQUA. This program will be run at Berwick.

LITTLE EARTH HUGGERS Come join Mrs. Duwel and Mrs. Camp for the first-ever Little Earth Huggers Summer School. We’ll be touching upon the tip of the sustainability iceberg and scratching the surface of how we can help repair (or at least not continue to cause more damage to) our precious planet. We’ll break down the meaning of sustainability, find out what some of today’s trendy terms mean, and learn about several small ways that we can all make big differences in helping Mother Earth spin more smoothly. This summer program will delve into lots of useful knowledge about trash on land and in waterways, composting, single-use (linear) vs circular societies, and other problems/solutions. We’ll also roll up our sleeves for several hands-on, planet-friendly DIY projects, such as: building campus bat houses, concocting “green” lotion, making all natural bug repellant, and more! It’s going to be a whole lot of earth-hugging FUN and we hope to see you there! Instructors: Cyndy Camp & Lauren Duwel K-Grade 4 • Tue-Fri, July 6-9 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. • $180
