FACTS & FIGURES
Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-
ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 properties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining overwintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Family Traditions
Victorian Corner
In Pacific Grove, as it should be everywhere, life is all about family and friends. The Aliotti Family’s Victorian Corner Restaurant has been a gathering place for family and friends for nearly 40 years. In fact, it’s Pacific Grove’s longest established restaurant, housed in an authentic 1893 Victorian, with two generations to greet you at the door. Many thanks to Paul Aliotti and his beautiful wife, Sandy, recently deceased, for creating this community gathering place and, now, to Domenic and Mary for keeping this Pacific Grove tradition alive!

You Are Smart & You Are Strong
by Laura & Corinne Harris On a much more serious note, Laura Harris and her 16 year old daughter, Corinne Harris, have published a book with the intention of preventing child sexual abuse.
Their book, You Are Smart & You Are Strong educates and encourages children to use their voice to stop sexual abuse. A most vital tool in today’s world written by a woman who cares deeply about those who were hurt as children. Harris has long been a foster caregiver for children and youth with severe trauma from abuse. Her daughter, who has autism, is smart and strong and talented. Corinne found time to illustrate the book between practice and competitions for the Synchronized Swimming California State Games, where she took home a Silver Medal, then went on to compete in Taiwan at the 1st Open Athletes With Disabilities Exhibition this past June.

Hauk on Art & Steinbeck
One of my favorite paintings in our gallery is the cover art for a Bantam Books edition of ``East of Eden’’ by Roger Kastle. Though Steinbeck wrote the book in New York, I imagine it must have been germinating in him while he was living and writing in the family’s Pacific Grove cottage in the 1930s.
This work is intriguing because it is one of the few paperback images for the novel that does not show James Dean – either in a photograph from the movie, or as depicted by an illustrator – as Cal Trask, although the young woman in the scene holding a flower looks somewhat like Julie Harris, who played Abra in the famous 1955 Elia Kazan film. It is a moving, artistically rendered scene, no doubt the one in which Cal pours out his soul to
Publishers asked Steve Hauk to tell about a work of art in his gallery:
Abra that no matter what he says or does, he will never please his father.
Kastle is still illustrating book covers, the most famous being his iconic image for ``Jaws’’ of the great shark rising up toward a hapless swimmer. It is so powerful it was used it for the movie poster. I like it, but I like his Cal and Abra better. Nancy and Steve Hauk own Hauk Fine Arts, specializing in early and contemporary California art. Nancy is an artist and Steve writes for the Steinbeck Review and SteinbeckNow.com and has finished a collection of stories based on Steinbeck’s life titled ``Almost True Stories from a Writer’s life.’’ Stop by Hauk Fine Arts and view this work among some of the finest examples of early and contemporary California art. Cover Story:
“A Man’s Best Friend” Artist’s Dog is loved in both Pacific Grove and Paso Robles Christopher Bell’s landmark “Butterfly Kids” sculpture in front of the PG post office includes a likeness of his son, Jordan, and his beloved pet AJ. We’ve heard the tales of this rescue dog and the love he brought to the Bell Family. What we didn’t know is that Chris couldn’t break the mold!
AJ also resides near a drinking fountain in the Paso Robles City Park, near the Twelfth Street park entrance, bringing smiles to all who pass by. The piece is titled, “A Man’s Best Friend.”
Christopher Bell, who died in 1998 at the age of 49, also created the beautiful sea otter sculpture, titled “Life at the Top” on view in Berwick Park near Lovers Point Beach. Pacific Grove is fortunate to have a number of public art displays. We couldn’t find reference to the female model for the Butterfly Kids sculpture. Does anyone know her name? 62
