FACTS & FIGURES

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-

ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 properties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining overwintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Walk with Steinbeck

in Steve Hauk’s new book, “Steinbeck, The Untold Stories” Ever wonder who John Steinbeck really was and where the inspiration for his stories came? Author Steve Hauk, with his recently published book, “Steinbeck, The Untold Stories,” gives us a close and personal look at Steinbeck and the people and places that shaped him and inspired much of his writings as seen through Hauk’s fictional eyes. Hauk, a specialist in early and contemporary California art and himself a man of literary talent, became interested in Steinbeck some years ago when he received one of Steinbeck’s hand written letters, delivered to his art gallery anonymously. In his research, he quickly learned that a number of the artists, writers and others Steinbeck had personal relationships with also came to his support when the author received threats for what he was writing. The book looks at known truths about the legendary writer and the real-life fate of many of those from which he derived his fictional characters. It is a delightful read filled with thoughtful and often humorous anecdotes. Pick up a keepsake copy of “Steinbeck, ‘ The Untold Stories” at The BookWorks or Hauk Fine Arts in Pacific Grove or, if you must, at Amazon.com. Steve Hauk writes for the Steinbeck Review and for SteinbeckNow.com, publisher of “Steinbeck: The Untold Stories.” He wrote award-winning documentaries that have been telecast on PBS, and a half dozen plays, including two scheduled for Northern California productions early next year. Steve and Nancy Hauk founded Hauk Fine Arts, which specializes in early and contemporary California art.

A New Way To Experience

Trotter Galleries is filled with an amazing cache of California art collected over more than 30 years. Yet, it’s how the unique collection is displayed that makes all the difference. Instead of an isolated work of art tagged with a title and the name of the artist, Trotter Galleries present the history of the artist, their work, and how it relates to the Monterey Peninsula. The gallery is arranged into sections for each artist, with personal letters, sketches, studies, and even the tools they created with. There are art books and antique furnishings arranged for quiet browsing. Yet, you need only ask and Terry Trotter will give you a personal introduction. His encyclopedic knowledge of these artists is most intriguing. The Trotter’s welcome classrooms and other groups to experience their unique setting for education. Give them a call to make arrangements.

Art

Trotter Galleries is located at 301-303 Forest Avenue in Pacific Grove. Call 649-3246 for information.

Biba celebrates 16 years in Pacific Grove

Hannah Krapikas was just a child when her mother, Elise Paton, opened Biba women’s boutique. Over the past 16 years, Biba has earned a reputation as a haven for sophisticated women with an eye for quality. Meanwhile, Hannah grew up, went off to college, married, and then, with her mother’s unexpected passing, made the decision to return to Pacific Grove to keep her mother’s vision alive. “These past few years have been a whirlwind yet, this is where I’m meant to be.” confirms Hannah. “My mother taught me to shop for clothing that offers a classic look that will wear well through the fashion tends—Never boring. I call it ‘Classic with a Twist.’” Since Hannah’s return, she has formed solid relationships with the

women her mother took such good care of due to her masterful personal shopping expertise (we think its in the blood). Hannah remembers your favorite color, dress size, even your wedding anniversary, and may call to tell you she found the perfect outfit for that anniversary dinner. Hannah has also formed relationships with local artists and jewelers and features their work in her boutique. Like her mother, Hannah has a sophisticated eye for fashion and a warm spirit she shares with all who walk through the door. This coming May, Biba will mark it’s 16th anniversary. The boutique is as fresh today as it was the day it opened it’s doors. Stop by and meet Hannah Krapikas at Biba, 211 Forest Avenue, Pacific Grove.
