Pacific Grove —An Artists’ Dreamscape

While Carmel is often referred to as an Early-California artist colony, Pacific Grove has long been an artists’ haven in its own right. Some of the world’s most accomplished painters have featured Pacific Grove in their works, while others, such as William Adams and Sam Colburn chose to make it their home. Our little town is lucky to boast not one, but two art galleries with spectacular Early-California (Pacific Grove) collections on display. Hauk Fine Arts and Trotter Galleries both offer a unique perspective of the Monterey Peninsula, with expert and elaborate details of the artists and their works. While Carmel offers street after street of somewhat stuffy art galleries, Pacific Grove offers a first hand look behind the art scene, allowing you to explore the artists’ working studios and meet the artists themselves. 12 Discover Pacific Grove

Pictured: Plein Air painter, Barry Marshall and work by multimedia artist, & Pacific Grove native, Bryan Gage

Many of these studios are hidden away in unlikely spaces yet, it’s worth your time to search them out. Check this guide for direction. You’ll find painters, sculptors, assemblage and multimedia artists, traditional and contemporary, all within blocks of each other. You’ll also find places where you can express yourself through art in a number of different ways.

Research has shown that the arts are a critical part of our well-being making Pacific Grove a healthy place to be.

Create art, buy art, live well.

FACTS & FIGURES

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-

ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 properties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining overwintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Past Queen Topaz, Becky DeSmet

Feast of Lanterns SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

While the Feast of Lanterns has been a Pacific Grove tradition for 113 years, our beloved Royal Court first appeared in 1958, under the direction of local community leader, Elmarie Hurlbert Hyler Dyke. The event continues to grow and change with the times yet, our Royal Court remains an important part of the annual event.

Pacific Grove students apply for a Royal Court or Guard position, and are selected based on their educational goals, their commitment to our community and ability to public speak. Once accepted, they are put to work with a year-round schedule of events and activities earning scholarships for their efforts. The Royal Court is made up of princesses;Ruby, Emerald, Jade, Amethyst, and such, with Queen Topaz at the helm.

The scholarship program has been so successful a Royal Guard offering boys an opportunity to hold these leadership positions in our community.

Mountain Mike’s — Where The Teams Meet

Every community has one—a gathering place where everyone is welcome and camaraderie runs deep. Pacific Grove has Mountain Mike’s Pizza, the place we can count on to make room for the family or the entire baseball team. It’s the place where our local sports teams go to eat pizza, play games, and host their awards ceremonies. It’s the place our local non-profit and social groups choose to host their monthly meetings. It’s a place that helps hold our community together. In addition, Mountain Mike’s contributes to many local causes with donations of their mouth-watering pizza.

While Mountain Mike’s is part of a national chain, our local store is family owned and operated. You’ll find the owners cooking and serving the pizza themselves. Stop in for pizza, a salad bar, chicken wings, a cold beer, and some good, old-fashioned hometown service. 36 Discover Pacific Grove

Dine Around Town

Pacific Grove boasts the very best selection of restaurants in Monterey County. Try a different one at least once a month for a culinary adventure that will surely enrich your life. It’s clear why Passionfish holds the County record for local reader poll wins in seafood and overall dining yet, there are plenty of others that are worth a visit. Pepper’s Mexicali, a long time local favorite, will be honored as PG Restaurant of the Year and Vivolo’s Chowder House also holds a Best Restaurant ‘18 title, while Fandango has earned such titles many times over. Petra’s has given us 33 years of excellent Mediterranean fare, and now Jeninni Restaurant & Wine Bar brings us their contemporary Mediterranean menu. Other award winning establishments include The Beach House which offers delicious, inexpensive dining with incomparable views. The Red House Cafe’s charming atmosphere comes with tasty soups, sandwiches and local dinner specials. Toasties Cafe is a hot spot for breakfast and lunch. Max’s Grill offers elegant continental meals at affordable prices and Pacific Thai has been a local favorite for over a decade. Lately everyone is talking about the Monarch Pub, the first and only pub in PG. Or walk across the street for International Cuisine’s huge menu and ‘semi-secret full bar.’ For delicious, certified organic meals there’s always Happy Girl Kitchen. Choices for Italian cuisine are many. Try family owned and operated La Piccola Casa, La Mia Cucina, Cafe Ariana and Victorian Corner for starters. Look for new restaurants coming soon and get out and enjoy! 40 Discover Pacific Grove

Remembering Steinbeck 50 Years After His Death by Steve Hauk

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of one of Pacific Grove’s most distinguished citizens – Pulitzer and Nobel prize winner John Steinbeck. He died 12/20/1968 in New York City.

While Steinbeck is often associated with Monterey and his home town of Salinas, it was in Pacific Grove that he worked on, among many works, Tortilla Flat and Of Mice and Men, and probably did some planning of The Grapes Of Wrath, which he would actually pen in the Los Gatos area. This writing and planning took place in a little red cottage on 11th Street which his family used as a second residence, coming over from Salinas in the summer time. As a young adult it became Steinbeck and his first wife Carol’s home.

Steinbeck settled in New York in 1941, but returned to Pacific Grove off and on over the years, sometimes arriving under the darkness of night, spending the first day or two weeding and

working on the fenced yard. Soon people would realize he had returned and he would depart again for the East Coast.

At one point, being interviewed in the cottage by a young reporter from Monterey Peninsula College, he said he was going to stay and work on his next novel, probably what would become East of Eden. But that intention faded and he was soon gone again.

He liked Pacific Grove and once said the sometimes foggy weather was good because it kept him indoors writing. He enjoyed walking by the tide pools which created in him, he said, a sense of proportion. Hopefully he found that again, in 1960 when he was researching Travels with Charley and visited Pacific Grove again with his wife Elaine and Charley, eight years before his death a half century ago.

Steve Hauk is author of “Steinbeck: The Untold Stories” published in 2017 by Steinbecknow.com and available om Amazon and at select book stores. He wrote award–winning documentaries on art and photography that have been telecast on PBS, and a half dozen plays, two scheduled for imminent production. Steve and Nancy Hauk founded Hauk Fine Arts, which specializes in early and contemporary art.

Our Library Needs Your Help....

It was 110 years ago that Andrew Carnegie provided a grant to build the Pacific Grove Public Library. More than a century later, some 500 residents and visitors utilize the Library each day. Yet, our public library is showing its age and is in need of renewal to meet the needs of future generations. Thankfully the Friends of the Library have joined with the Library Foundation, City Council, the Library Board, and community volunteers to raise needed funds to thoughtfully restore and renew our historic library. However, they will need our help.

With a total cost of 2.5 million dollars,$500,000 remains to be raised by September 2018 100% of your tax-deductible contribution will go to the Renewal Project. You can donate Online: www.pglibraryfriends.org, or simply drop your donation off at the Library’s front desk, at 550 Central Avenue.

Renewal Project Outline: Preserving Our Community’s Past • Reveal and refinish 1908 Rotunda • Restore and connect the historic “heart” of the Library • Create a central history space to protect and display local history Enhancing Use for the Present • Provide comfortable and accessible community spaces. • Update restrooms, carpeting, shelving, and fixtures •New central service desk and upgraded lighting and signage Renewing for the Future • Improve technology infrastructure to meet 21st century needs • Provide adaptable spaces to support group study programs, and meetings “Now is your chance to leave a lasting legacy for the community. Won’t you join us?”

Artisana Gallery Celebrates 10th Year Anniversary When Adrianne Jonson and Sandy Hamm came to Pacific Grove a decade ago they brought with them a unique idea and an enormous amount of enthusiasm. These two artists knew they had found the perfect place for artists to show and sell their work. Today, Artisana Gallery, at 612 Lighthouse Avenue, collectively showcases some 45 unique artists and artisans, including their own works in photography and jewelry design. In addition, these women have reached out to their adopted community offering bold and refreshing concepts for invigorating our business districts. 1st Friday Pacific Grove, 62 Discover Pacific Grove

celebrated each month for the past 8 years, was created by this dynamic duo as was Pacific Grove Fine Arts & Crafts Festival in Jewell Park. The pair have also been instrumental in keeping Artists in Chautauqua alive as an annual event, and Adrianne has joined the board of the Pacific Grove Art Center, working hard to keep this important organization afloat durx times. We have ing difficult financial much to be grateful for their efforts. Do stop in and let them know their efforts are appreciated.
