The Coleman Family’s 32 Years of Service to The Feast of Lanterns Pacific Grove is a town filled with tradition. However, it is not many who will dedicate more than thirty years to help keep our traditions alive. Pacific Grove’s Coleman Family first volunteered for the Feast in 1985, when Joni Coleman Birch served as Princess Emerald. The entire family fell in love with the Feast. Gordon and Virginia (mom & dad) began serving on the Board of Directors, as their daughters, Joni and Kaye, went on to serve as princesses and, eventually, both earned the title of Queen Topaz. Both dad and their brother Andrew Coleman, have served as Pier entertainers and Joni’s son, Thor, has served as a Crown Bearer. Even Joni’s husband has served the Feast. At this 32 year mark, Kaye is current President, Joni is a Board Member and Pageant Director, and Thor is serving on the new Royal Guard as Master Rooster. While the daughters initially fell in love with the Feast because they wanted to be Royalty, it was the fact the Feast of Lanterns celebrated young women and 12 Discover Pacific Grove

refined them as leaders that motivated them to continue volunteering. Meanwhile, the sisters have brought a fresh vision to the event with a commitment to inclusion that must be commended. “Joni and I continue to volunteer and help run the Feast out of a deep love for PG, because it shaped us into the leaders we are today, and finally because we honor our parents. We knew they would not retire from the Feast until we returned home and joined the Board of Directors. The Feast of Lanterns is a unique celebration steeped in history, diversity and celebrates our youth as the leaders of tomorrow. We are all lighted lanterns, meaning that we all have the potential to be enlightened and to become our authentic self. This festival celebrates the light within and the potential of the human spirit.” – Kaye Coleman The 112th Feast of Lanterns takes place July 26-30. FACTS & FIGURES

Pacific Grove was founded in 1875 as a Methodist church camp-

ground. It was incorporated as a city on July 16, 1889 and became a Charter city on April 22,1927. Pacific Grove boasts over 1200 properties in its Historic Inventory, more than any other city of its size in America. Sitting at the tip of the Peninsula, it is the only city to offer five miles of public shoreline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Monterey Bay. Pacific Grove is also one of the last remaining overwintering locations for the Monarch Butterfly.

Found west of downtown on Sunset Boulevard in the Russell Service Center, Peninsula Potters is home to clay artists ranging from ages 21 to 85. Each with distinctive talents, they form this creative co-op that has truly stood the test of time.

We can all agree, turning 50 deserves a party. The festivities will begin at noon on July 1 this summer at the Peninsula Potters Studio Gallery, at 2078 Sunset Dr. in the Russell Service Center, in Pacific Grove.

When San Francisco was giving birth to the flower power movement of peace and love, a small group of women and men opened Peninsula Potters in 1967. Their passion and focus was clay, creating functional and decorative art; designing, glazing and firing in the same studio. These artists held fast to the belief that hand-thrown ceramics reflected an intimacy and individual beauty not found in mass produced wares. Each hand-made piece tells a story and reflects the life and character of the artist. To this day, nine inspired women have continued the traditions of this creative co-op.

The celebration will continue throughout the month of July with a gallery-wide sale. They have much to celebrate. For more information contact peninsulapots@gmail.com or 831.372.8867

Museum Inspires Discovery, Wonder, and Stewardship

One of the first things Pacific Grove’s founding Methodists did to form their new community was make plans for a museum. The original Museum was initiated at the second meeting of the Pacific Grove Retreat Association’s Chautauqua Assembly in 1881, and, in 1883, it opened in a small, octagonal building in what is now Jewell Park. The Association maintained the Museum until 1916 when it was transferred to the City of Pacific Grove, moved across the street, and renamed The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. It’s current rendition was built in 1932. The Museum’s mission, which has not changed in 134 years, is to inspire discovery, wonder, and stewardship of our natural world. Over the years, it has acquired an extensive collection of over 30,000 records and more artifacts than it can publicly display. A number of the collections are especially noteworthy. The Museum showcases one of the most extensive bird collections on the

West Coast—over 290 bird species and 409 life mounted birds —all from within Monterey County. They also house an impressive collections of Native American baskets, pottery, and textiles. Thousands of historical photos of Pacific Grove are archived at the Museum, many available on-line. The Museum’s Native Plant Garden reflects the area’s important local ecosystems – coastal scrub, chaparral and oak woodland – as well as a butterfly garden and an ethno-botanical area featuring plants that local California Indians used for food and utility. Kids enjoy digging in the garden fossil pit and playing in the giant Spirit Nest made of woven tree branches. Visit The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, on the corner of Forest & Central Avenues. Admission is free for Monterey County Residents; Visiting Adults $8.95, and visiting youth, students and military $5.95. Call 648-5716 for info.

Thousands of local residents have taken Thousands of local residents to the internet as a way to stay informed, share neighborhood news, and meet new people, with mediums like Facebook and Nextdoor.com providing dedicated platforms for this local exchange. There are facebook sites such as You Know You’re From Pacific Grove, California when...; You Might Be from Pacific Grove if... Pagrovia; Free Pacific Grove; and more. Some have been around long enough to become controversial, due to a some members using it as a platform to express more than many may want to know. Yet, it is a sure way to get a feel for the issues that are important to our community. It’s likely to hit Facebook before it hits the local news and, as with the local news, you shouldn’t assume all the facts are there for judgement. NextDoor Pacific Grove is quite neighborly with posts restricted to those of a polite nature. As of this writing, top post headlines included:

Looking for a painter to refinish my front door; Missing Cat; New AirBNB Study; Lost Dog; Save Our Shores-Earth Day; Huge Upscale Moving Sale; In search of Rhubarb; Thanks for kind words after the car accident; Dine Out With Friends at Petra Restaurant; Joining Hands Benefit Shop Spring Garden Sale; Paint Nite & Online Silent Auction. One man was kind enough to share...”Grove Market has canned peeled cherry tomatoes—unbelievably cute and extremely tasty. I’m using a can tonight as I cook shrimp. They are excellent, but I bought the last 3 cans this morning. Still, if you ask, they might be able to tell you when they will be restocked. “ Another resident who recently moved to PG from Napa shares an idea she brought with her, calling it, Pacific Grove Rocks. Her daughter has painted rocks (see photo above) and plans to hide them throughout town for locals to find and share on-line. She encourages others to join them.! Discover Pacific Grove 55

Art Classes

The Pacific Grove Art Center is a community gathering place where locals of all ages can come to express themselves through art. Check out their art classes for youth and adults. We especially love Julie Heilman’s after school art programs for elementary school aged children. Local Academician, Gregory Kondos by Steve Hauk

Winslow Homer was one, so was John Singer Sargent. Famous artists, yes, but also members of the National Academy of Design, otherwise known as National Academicians. The much sought after honor is bestowed by fellow American artists. Not many cities have one, but Pacific Grove does in Gregory Kondos.

Gregory and Moni Kondos purchased a home in Pacific Grove 27 years ago. Kondos was elected to the Academy in 1995, joining other past Monterey Pennisula National Academicians such as Monterey’s Armin Hansen and Carmel’s Donald Teague. The couple’s first home is in Sacramento, where Gregory, the son of Greek immigrants, grew up. But as he once told a writer about Pacific Grove, ``I can’t claim I’m just from Sacramento anymore. I have to be from here, too.’’ To cement that relationship, Gregory recently presented the Pacific Grove Library with an oil painting of author

John Steinbeck’s Pacific Grove cottage (above). Known for his bold landscapes, Kondos has exhibited across the country and his work is held by museums from Shanghai to Washington, D.C. Sacramento’s Crocker Art Museum did a major retrospective of his work, publishing a book on his life and work.

Kondos’s work is much sought after and, at age 95, he continues to paint. That’s what National Academicians do. Steve Hauk writes for the Steinbeck Review and Steinbecknow.com. He is the author of ``Steinbeck . . the Untold Stories,’’ to be published later this year by Steinbeck Now, two PBS documentaries, and the play ``A Mild Concussion,’’ tentatively scheduled for production in the San Francisco Bay Area. Steve and Nancy Hauk founded Hauk Fine arts, which specializes in early and contemporary California art, some 25 years ago.
