Calvin’s Wine Club Fifi’s Cafe makes fine wine accessible
Fifi’s Cafe has been an institution in Pacific Grove for over 30 years. During this time they have worked hard to give their customers everything they ask for in fine dining. Over the past few years, this has come to mean wine—fine wines— from around the world. Wine has become such a factor in providing the Fifi’s dining experience that owners, Michelle and Calvin have created Calvin’s Wine Club offering their customers their latest finds at incredible discounts. Fifi’s also hosts monthly wine tasting events and wine pairing diners. They even have a wine shop inside the cafe. For a schedule of Fifi’s wine events and Calvin’s Wine Club visit www.fifisbistrocafe.com Better yet, stop by Fifi’s, at 1188 Forest Avenue, and experience it for yourself. 36 Discover Pacific Grove
New Picture Book of Pacific Grove Architecture
The BookWorks Publishes “Pacific Grove Architecture & Anecdotes,” A Full-Color Picture Book Featuring Pacific Grove’s Historic Architecture The BookWorks Bookstore has published an 8-1/2” x11” picture book featuring 40 full-color photographs of Pacific Grove’s historic architecture and attractions, alongside anecdotes about the city’s unique beginnings. With the help of the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, publishers were able to add a short paragraph about the history of each property pictured. Pat Hathaway, of California Views provided the historic photographs. The contemporary photographs
and photo illustrations are the work of Craig Riddell. Only 1,000 copies have been printed, making this book a limited edition.
Books, $26.95, are available at The BookWorks, 667 Lighthouse Ave. PG. Call 831-372-2242 or visit www.bookworkspg to reserve your copy. Pictured: Elihu Beard House, Built in 1880 Cover Photo: Caroline Thornton House, Built in 1883—now available as a shortterm rental via MontereyRentals.com

Saving the Pacific Grove Art Center Goal: 700 New Memberships
Be A Part Of It! Pacific Grove Art Center Executive Directo, Teresa Brown
The Pacific Grove Art Center is struggling at a time when our community needs it the most.
With increased overhead and stagnant contributions the Art Center has found itself in a financial bind that could jeopardize its very existence. Now, with these new projections before them, it is time to take action to save the 50-year-old establishment for the benefit of our community. We all must take on some responsibility. The easiest way is to simply become a member.
What You Can Do To Help:
Please Become A Member of The Pacific Grove Art Center Today
A year-long, $50 membership equals less than $5.00 a month and provides unmeasurable service; to our youth, seniors, artists, and the community at large. Ask your friends too!
The Art Center has a number of giving categories to fit every budget. Please visit them on-line at www.pgartcenter.org, or in person to give to this most worthy cause. Can your business distribute membership forms and encourage more people to become members and/or donate? Let’s help them meet their goal of 700 new memberships this year!
Art Center Looking For Volunteers
Can you volunteer to help organize, set-up, and take-down the Center’s in-house events, such as the Summer Concert Series; opening receptions; and the Tiny Treasures Show? Visit the Art Center at 568 Lighthouse Ave., or call 831-375-2208 or email: pgaced@gmail.com Visit their website at: www.pgartcenter.org

Andrew Jackson Comes To PG to Paint
We are excited to announce that Monterey County’s Painter of The Night has opened a studio in the American Tin Cannery, where he will work steadily until the construction begins on the new hotel. This is an opportunity for locals to meet this talented artist in person and view his spectacular works up close and personal. Andrew has made quite a name for himself here on the Monterey Peninsula and we expect he will be known throughout the US and beyond in the coming years. Visit him in the ATC, 125 Oceanview Blvd., upstairs, 312-B, or on line at www.OuterEdgeStudio.com 58 Discover Pacific Grove

Hauk on Art & Steinbeck Observations and Speculations on the Work of Artist Burton Boundey Pacific Grove artist Burton Boundey’s ``landscapes and marines of the Monterey Peninsula have gained him national renown,’’ according to the book ``Artists in California.’’ This painting by Boundey – which exhibited at the National Steinbeck Center in 1998 – is perhaps a nod to author John Steinbeck. The two men likely encountered each other in the 1930s, the artist painting along the shoreline, the author exploring the Pacific Grove tide pools or walking to Cannery Row.
The scene’s probably Pacific Grove, and the woman and man could be the characters Suzy and Doc (marine biologist Ed Ricketts) from Steinbeck’s 1954 novel ``Sweet Thursday.’’
Ricketts’ has been described as a not large man who nonetheless evoked power, which fits the figure in the sleeveless T-shirt. Suzy was a ``pretty girl’’ with a ``good figure’’ who wore a dress of a color called ``Love Apples,’’ which could describe the pink dress. Or perhaps, , Boundey spotted Suzy and Ricketts together and, as Steinbeck was to write about them, he painted them.
Boundey died in his Pacific Grove home in 1962. Steinbeck outlasted him by six years while Suzy and Doc live on in John Steinbeck’s writing, and, perhaps, in this painting. Nancy and Steve Hauk own Hauk Fine Arts, specializing in early and contemporary California art. Nancy is an artist and Steve writes for the Steinbeck Review and SteinbeckNow. com and has finished a collection of stories based on Steinbeck’s life titled ``Almost True Stories from a Writer’s life.’’ Stop by Hauk Fine Arts and view this work among some of the finest examples of early and contemporary California art.
