Local Man Helps Build A Neighborhood

Owner: 925-200-6988

What do you do with your free time? Pacific Grove resident Don Livermore spends it working to make others smile. A retired teacher, Don enjoys volunteering for local non-profit organizations and decorating his home to bring smiles to his community. What he started on Halloween in 1972 has grown to become a year round attraction with the help of Don’s friends and neighbors. Just about everyone visits Don’s home during the holidays, to experience his Halloween and Christmas extravaganzas. Nearly one hundred participated in this year’s pumpkin carving contest and even more come to view over a dozen Christmas trees on display in December. Don also hosts Feast of Lanterns celebrations, Super Bowl parties, and random neighborhood gatherings throughout the year.

Over the past few years, Don has created an entire Little Free Library Village around the perimeter of his home, incorporating a series of model trains for the neighborhood to enjoy. In addition to the half-dozen libraries, He has created a Snoopy Display case for a neighbor, labeled “Dog Gone Good Free Stuff” and a lovely Plant Exchange display case which is currently filled with succulents and a few cut flowers. There’s even a play station stocked with dinosaurs. Everyone should be so lucky to have a neighbor like Don.

Bob Pacelli PG’s Butterfly Man

It just so happened, a Pacific Grove resident, who worked as a camera man for local TV stations, took up the pastime of filming Pacific Grove’s Monarch Butterflies. Over a period of 20-plus years Bob Pacelli has acquired a treasure trove of footage and an abundance of institutional knowledge about our butterflies’ over-wintering habits. He has shared this footage and knowledge with national and international television stations as well as scientists from across the country. He was there, in the middle of the citizen’s initiative to create the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and, when the Sanctuary was approved, he began keeping a close eye on it while getting to know the Sanctuary volunteers and speaking on behalf of the butterflies at City Council meetings, reminding folks, “it’s not a public park, it’s a sanctuary.” 12 Discover Pacific Grove

In 2009, there was what the City of Pacific Grove admits was an over-zealous trimming of the sanctuary trees. Pacelli was concerned the missing foliage would have a negative impact on the butterflies and set out to fix it. He found a source for a dozen potted trees and put out a call to the community to buy them, which they did. He had them placed to create an essential windbreak, which proved to be highly successful. He adds additional trees to the sanctuary as he deems necessary to keep the habitat thriving. Although he has sometimes been a thorn in the City of Pacific Grove’s side, due to his close eye on the habitat and his tendency to get things done, with or without due process, Pacelli has proven to be a true advocate for our butterflies and has earned the moniker, PG’s Butterfly Man.

Sunday Breakfast On The Beach

Discover The Best Dining

Al knows what it’s like to be hungry. He also knows what its like to be rich. He’s decided he prefers to be rich...in friends and experiences he’s created through his Community Sunday Breakfast program. A few years ago, Pacific Grove resident, Al Siekert saw that the homeless population on the Peninsula was growing at an astonishing rate and felt inclined to take action. He decided the best thing he could do for these folks was to provide them with some company and a healthy meal once a week. “These folks are just like you and me. Some have lost their homes, others have lost their minds, yet, they’re just like you and me and deserve some companionship, conversation, and a nice hot meal.” He staked out a location—Monterey’s window on the bay—due to its proximity to the Peninsula’s largest homeless population. He then began reaching out into his community. Al found there were plenty of folks willing to give his idea their time and donations. Today, Al’s Sunday Breakfast on 44 Discover Pacific Grove

the Beach project is feeding some 75-95 homeless residents, as well as dozens of community volunteers, each week.

You never know who you may meet at one of Al’s community events. Even the former Mayor of Pacific Grove helps prep Sunday’s nutritious meal. The program has been so successful Al made it official with an Al & Friends non-profit status and facebook page with a donation button. Won’t you be a part of it? Contact Al at 831-831-402-0820 or send your donation to Al & Friends, P.O. Box 1022, Pacific Grove, CA 93950.

Pacific Grove Art Center Celebrates 50 Years One of Pacific Grove’s most beloved institutions commemorates an important 50th anniversary in 2019. The Golden Years are now upon them, and it is the contributions from the community that makes them golden. Board President, Adrianne Jonson, confirms, “The Art Center has made a lot of strides recently and its future is looking brighter and brighter.” The Center is an arts and arts education non-profit whose mission is to educate, appreciate, exhibit, encourage, and inspire. Look to 2019 for an exciting line up of events and activities that meet the goals of their mission while highlighting community collaboration. The Art Center’s volunteers will be participating in dozens of community events and inviting you to participate in theirs.

Starting with the Gala Opening in the new year, the directors have an exciting line up of exhibitions and events in store. There’s never been a better time to become a member of the Pacific Grove Art Center. In fact, get a membership for the entire family. Your donation helps them connect with the community through free art shows, a variety of musical performances, and after school art classes for kids. You will be supporting the inspiration of 18 accomplished artists who create in the PG Art Center studios, touching the lives of at least 10,000 people annually. Doc Rickett’s Lab by Steve Hauk

Illustration by C. Kline from the book, Steinbeck: The Untold Stories by Steve Hauk Famously known as the character Doc in John Steinbeck’s novella “Cannery Row,” legendary marine biologist Ed Ricketts established his California roots in Pacific Grove. Coming from Chicago, he lived in four different Pacific Grove houses from 1923 through 1936. His first marine biology laboratory, too, was established in Pacific Grove, in 1923, on the corner of Fountain Avenue and an alley now called Ricketts’ Row. In 1927 he purchased the property where his historic laboratory stands on Monterey’s Cannery Row when Pacific Grove was getting ready to demolish the lab building on Fountain. I live in the house in which he made his home with his family in the late 1920s.

Some years ago, Ricketts’ son Ed and daughter Nancy visited our house to rekindle memories of their youth. Some of the stories Nancy Ricketts told us ended up in my book “Steinbeck: The Untold Stories,” published last year by Steinbecknow.com.

Nancy Ricketts told us her father would collect ocean specimans in a bucket and bring them home, pouring the hermit crabs and other small creatures into the stoppered kitchen sink. He’d pull up chairs for the kids to stand on and look as he talked to them about the sea and the interdependence of its creatures. Nancy Ricketts said these were among the favorite times in her life.

So I suppose my home was, in a way, a marine biology laboratory – in Pacific Grove. Steve Hauk is author of “Steinbeck: The Untold Stories” published in 2017 by Steinbecknow.com and available om Amazon and at select book stores. He wrote award–winning documentaries on art and photography that have been telecast on PBS, and a half dozen plays. Steve and Nancy Hauk founded Hauk Fine Arts, which specializes in early and contemporary art.

Local Benefit Shops Give Back To Our Community

Stop by and meet Jane at Neverland Benefit Shop

Pacific Grove is a caring community and we have some incredible nonprofits who are a part of it. These organizations contribute to the wellbeing of our town folk while they are look for funding to continue their work. The concept of a benefit retail store, selling donated goods, is one way these services are able to continue. Pacific Grove is home to more than a half dozen of these fund raising establishments. In addition to the church benefit shops you’ll find an assortment of worthy causes to support.

At Animal Friends Rescue Project Benefit Shop (AFRP) you may pick up a handmade quilt or gently worn jacket in exchange for funds that provide medical treatment and foster homes for our local homeless animals. AFRP’s adoption center is next door with the hope you might also find a place in your heart and your home for a pet.

Spirals 570 Lighthouse Ave

Spirals, for the Alliance on Aging, has a dynamic team of volunteers who curate their inventory to reflect their motto of being an “uncommon consignment and benefit shop.” The funds raised go to countless local services for our seniors.

The new Neverland Benefit Shop now open at the top of Forest Hill, is raising funds for PACREP theater arts. While new to Pacific Grove, you we see familiar faces and lots of treasures to take home in exchange for a bargain price on everything from furnishings to jewelry and the knowledge you are supporting local Arts. Shop local and benefit.
