Dear Friends & Neighbors, While the Summer of 2020 is now past, it will not be forgotten. The summer of social distancing, no fans in stands and maskwearing will long be remembered. And now we get to celebrate Halloween all month by continuing to wear our masks, knowing that doing so is certainly no treat, but is for sure the trick to health safety.

Thank you, Porsche of The Main Line, for choosing to invest in growing your business in our hometown while now also investing in the growth of our hometown’s magazine, sent for free each month to Newtown Square residents. As we welcome our new Back Cover Sponsor, we also say goodbye to our Inside Back Cover Sponsor: Mid-Atlantic Mechanical. Now comes the fun part. I’m asking Readers to help us determine which local business should take over the Inside Back Cover Sponsorship of Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors magazine. (See my Bringing People Together feature on page 14 to learn how you can help us make that decision.) Lastly, my sincere thanks! Comments keep coming back from our Sponsors whose ads are seen on these pages. Thank you for voting with your wallet. Thank you for choosing to do your business with your hometown Sponsors who make your hometown magazine possible. The Vossschulte Family: Life’s Journey Led Them to Newtown Square by Christina Manning Photos by Sierra Clark Photography www.SierraClarkPhoto.com
We would like to thank
for sponsoring this month’s Resident Feature.
Norman and Jeni Vossschulte
This month, we are pleased to introduce you to the Vossschulte Family, a family of six, that is, if you count their two Siberian Huskies! Norman Vossschulte was born in Germany, but had an unusual childhood. His step-father was a doctor and was hired by a German construction company to travel with them as they built airports, highways, or other large projects in other countries. He lived for five years in Nigeria, three years in Iraq and one year in Spain. Due to all the traveling, Norman had a very different experience with school, mostly taking place with one teacher and a small group of students of various ages. While living in Spain, he was sent to a school that only spoke in Spanish, but he was a hard worker and a quick learner! By the time he was 12, they were back in Germany where he embraced traditional schooling. He graduated with a degree in Biology and Physical Science from the Elly Heuss School. He continued his education in New York City where he attended acting school at Herbert Berghof Institute and received his International Graduation Certificate in 1998. Jeni is from Kenosha, Wisconsin, and attended Tremper High School, where she was heavily involved in choir, and all things musical. Coming from a sports family, her father was a teacher and track coach, she also played basketball and ran track. During high school, she began working as a model for the David and Lee Agency in Chicago. A month after Jeni graduated from high school, she left for Osaka, Japan for a two-month modeling contract. She then studied at Columbia College in Chicago for six months, after which, she landed a recurring modeling contract in Tokyo. When she returned, she used the money she made to move to New York City to enroll in a full-time musical theater 6

program. After performing in several shows, it became clear that she wanted to create her own music. A mutual friend introduced her to a guitarist with whom she began collaborating, and that was the beginning of a winding journey on the singer/ songwriter circuit. Norman and Jeni met in New York City in 1995. Jeni was part of the performing arts ministry of her church, and a friend of hers invited Norman and his fiancée to visit a service. “We were all introduced, but I was also interested in someone else at the time, so there wasn’t anything romantic about our meeting,” said Jeni. “We were simply friends.” As time went on, Norman’s engagement ended and Jeni’s relationship had also ended, so they would commiserate over long walks in Central Park. “Eventually, I noticed my heart changing towards him,” said Jeni, “honestly it surprised me!” “We went on a few dates and I think we both just knew that we were meant to end up together,“ added Norman. The couple dated for about 10 months, then had a quick three-month engagement and got married in March 1998 in New York City. Since Norman is from Germany, there were quite a few family members and friends who couldn’t make the trip for their wedding, so for their honeymoon, they headed to Europe. The newlywed couple spent the first two weeks in Roses, Spain where Norman’s family owned a house. They then continued to Germany, to visit his family and friends. Norman and Jeni have two sons, Neo and Anik. Neo is an athletic and kind-hearted 17-year-old. He just started his first year at Episcopal Academy after previously attending Marple Newtown High School. Neo loves football, basketball, track
and even strumming a bit on the guitar. He builds camaraderie among his teammates and hopes to play football in college. Anik, 14, is starting his freshman year at Marple Newtown High School. He’s kind and creative, and is very into playing basketball and biking around with his friends. He specializes in airbrushing and customizing shoes: He even has his own Instagram to showcase his artwork. He also enjoys training their two Siberian Huskies, Nanuk and Jedi. Norman is currently the Director of Fan Experience for the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Norman oversees Eagles gameday staff, hiring, training, Season Ticket Member Services and Norman and Jeni holding the 2018 Superbowl LII trophy

Guest Services, it takes a great team to pull off creating one of the best fan experiences in the world. “Brian, Catherine, Jon, Nicki and Megan are the ones that make the magic happen,” said Norman, “I couldn’t do it without them. Teamwork makes the dream work!” During this time, he’s also working as the Zoom Master, hosting training camp calls with the players, alumni and the fans. “I get to interact and make fans happy,” said Norman. “It’s those magical moments, when a fan gets to walk through our Eagles tunnel onto the field or high-5 a player on game day!” Norman acts as the official spokesperson for the GO GREEN initiative. “We are one of the most sustainable stadiums and teams in the world,” he explained. “We have the largest solar power plant in the NFL and have eliminated hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles by installing water

filtration systems.” The Eagles have also planted thousands of trees to offset carbon emissions from player travel. Thanks to the Eagles Super Bowl win in 2018, he is also a very proud owner of a Super Bowl ring! Jeni wears many hats, one of which is as a teaching artist for the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center based in Pittsburgh. They have a program called Artreach, which provides a wide variety of arts classes for PA cyber-students. She’s also launching a vocal instruction site called Kitemaster Studios, where she’ll be teaching vocal technique and beginning piano to private students or small groups virtually or in person. “I want to build a site where people can get coaching based on their specific musical genre.” In New York, Jeni had the privilege of studying with some highly regarded vocal coaches, some for musical theater, others for pop and rock. “There is basic technique that everyone can benefit from, as well as stylistic coaching that goes beyond the basics,” explained Jeni, “I love teaching all of it!” If that isn’t enough, she also teaches in-studio lessons at Silver Studios in Havertown, and she performs solo singer/songwriter gigs. “My

Norman regularly attends the Philadelphia Church of Christ and is part of a Bible discussion group. He’s also a member of a men’s spiritual hiking group where they all go out and pray on Saturday mornings. “I love hiking and nature, being in it helps put things into perspective,” said Norman, “I also do projects to help me stay grounded. I recently built an electric fat tire bicycle with my son.” Norman is an avid Star Wars and Batman fan, and he used to be a Jedi Master at Disney! Norman and Jeni have both coached with the Marple Newtown Basketball Association and have volunteered at the high school for the football program. Jeni is also very involved in the church, and they both spent four years in the full-time ministry when they lived in New York City. When not working on music, she also loves to take long walks and paint. “I also do a lot of vacuuming,” said Jeni, “I mean, we have two huskies!” In 2012, the Vossschulte family moved to PA from Florida, where they were living for Norman’s previous job at Disney World. They rented a place near St. Alban’s, then had to move when the owner decided to sell. “At first we thought our new place seemed small and we only would stay a year,” said Norman, “but we have been here almost seven years. “Our neighborhood is very relaxed and quiet,” said Jeni, “and we love hearing our neighbors’ stories about when they grew up here.” As often as possible, the family takes an adventurous vacation with Jeni’s brother, sister-in-law and two nephews. “We have spent a week in an RV out west, hiking in some of the beautiful national parks!” The Vossschulte family would like to share this special message to the community: We have met many incredible families deeply rooted and involved in the Marple Newtown area. Your loyalty is admirable, and your ability to pull together to support one another is very impressive. It has been eight years since we moved here; yet, we still feel like we are learning about the values and traditions that you so proudly carry. Thank you for your deep devotion to making this a true example of community. NS

When we move, we feel good; that is no secret. So, what happens when our world comes to a standstill and we find ourselves staring at screens all day? Fatigue, strain, stress and anxiety start creeping in, with the potential to wreak havoc on our physical and mental health. And it is not just happening to teens and adults. Many parents are finding their younger children are struggling with anxiety, sadness and behavior challenges. The importance of both physical and mental well-being is at the forefront these days, and there are ways we can help each other stay healthy. Dance not only improves your heart health, muscle strength, balance, and coordination, it also reduces depression and anxiety. And you know what? You don’t even

have to be good at it to reap the rewards! Just get up and move to start releasing those mood-enhancing chemicals in your brain and body! That’s right: There are ways we all can benefit from stepping away from our screens. Here are 3 simple steps (pun intended), to get the family up and moving.
Turn up the Volume! Ages: Junior High & High School Dance Style: Urban, Commercial, Street Audition is required.
Start your day with upbeat music. Involve the family by taking turns picking the playlist. No need to stress over putting one together. Apps like Spotify and Pandora have tons of mood-boosting ready-to-go selections.
Interested dancers email: dance@fromthetoponline.com with the Subject Line: “Dance Crew”
Pop-Up Dance Parties! Need a break from that meeting? Kids getting restless on a rainy day? There is no better way to beat the boredom than an impromptu dance party! Clear a spot in the living room and get down. Let the kids teach you a new dance move, then teach them one of yours. Guaranteed laughter right there!

A quick online search for dance games will give you plenty of ideas for fun activities. A few examples are to use props around the house like ribbons and hula hoops. Flashlights can be fun when you turn off the lights, turn up the music and have a “spotlight” dance party. Or make a chart with each letter of the alphabet representing a different dance move. Have the kids dance their name or their favorite food. By encouraging our kids to take time for fun, switch things up, and get moving, we are showing them that their physical and mental health is important. And guess what? Yours matters, too. NS

Don’t Fall Back on Your Maintenance With everything going on, it might seem that a furnace tune-up is the last thing you need to worry about. But ignoring the important task of maintaining your heating equipment will cause more headaches (not to mention money) in the long run as well as the short term. Here are seven reasons to keep your tune-up date for your furnace.
1. Energy Efficiency A poorly tuned furnace will cost you more in energy consumption as its efficiency falls. You might think you’re saving money by postponing this year’s maintenance but it’ll only cost you in utility bills.
Maintain Your HVAC System During Every Season
2. Furnaces Fail Under Pressure At some point, the temperature will drop - drastically. If your furnace is ill-equipped to handle the drop in temperature, it will fail when you need it the most. Don’t let this nightmare happen to you and your family. Stay warm all winter long, not just on the mild days.
3. Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning If your furnace doesn’t burn gas properly, you run the risk of carbon monoxide being produced. This puts you and your family at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. This risk is definitely not worth the money you save from skipping your fall tune-up.
4. Breathe Easy A clean fan and filter will ensure that the air you breathe is free from dust and other allergens. This is critical for the cold days ahead when you’ll be spending more time indoors.
5. Quiet Run Fully licensed and insured to provide dependable and quality services that our customers have come to expect and count on.

A finely tuned furnace, like a finely tuned car, will run rather than rattle. Keep the noise level at a minimum with a clean, balanced fan.
6. Avoid a Major Repair Regular furnace maintenance takes care of any small issues that come up so they don’t develop into major problems. You’ll also get a handle of your heater’s operation so you can plan for any anticipated replacements in advance.
7. Prolong Your Equipment’s Life Tune-ups don’t just postpone expensive issues with your furnace; they also buy you some time before the inevitable replacement. Keep your heating equipment running at peak efficiency and with minimal issues to ensure that you get the most out of it in the short term and for years to come. It’s time to book your furnace fall maintenance. Don’t fall back. Call a professional today so they can help you stay warm and safe this coming winter. NS

Reader Leaders Bringing People Together: Time to Nominate Our New Inside Back Cover Sponsor This month we welcome another Lead Sponsor to our magazine: Porsche of The Main Line. How wonderful that we see Rafferty Subaru’s cars on the Inside Front Cover and now those beautiful new Porsche automobiles on the Back Cover of our hometown magazine every month.
After a year of service helping many Newtown Square homeowners navigate last year’s requirement to connect to township sewer service, we say “goodbye” Mid-Atlantic Mechanical and “thank you” to owner Rich DiMarco for his service to residents also as our magazine’s Inside Back Cover Lead Sponsor.
Even more wonderful is how our Sponsors are as loyal to their customers as their customers are loyal to them as Sponsors through our hometown magazine: Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors in print and online at www.NewtownSquareMag.com. As Porsche of The Main Line is building a new state-of-the art facility on their dealership campus in Newtown Square, they are also becoming a new lead Sponsor for us through our hometown magazine, we now all have a friend with a Porsche!
Now comes the fun part! Fun because our magazine has Reader Leaders who love helping our magazine grow in page count. They help us gain new Sponsors whose advertising helps to be Bringing People Together through more monthly features about Newtown Square residents, organizations, and businesses.
As we welcome Porsche of The Main Line as our new Back Cover Sponsor, we also say goodbye to our lead Sponsor, MidAtlantic Mechanical.
What’s a Reader Leader? It’s anyone who reads Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors like you, who knows our advertising Sponsors need to hear their sponsorship is valued by Newtown Square residents. And many of you Readers are Leaders! I’m often told how you are voting with your wallets by showing your favoritism for our advertising Sponsors who make our magazine possible. Thank you. But now I have a special request of Reader Leaders: Let’s now serve up our Inside Back Cover to a local business we’re proud to show off to Newtown Square residents as a Sponsor we’ll favor with our business. Who Should Be Our New Inside Back Cover Sponsor of Newtown Square Residents? Might a Lawyer become known by Newtown Square residents as a lead Sponsor? Will a Newtown Square Bank, with so many in Newtown Square, want a competitive edge to gain new business through our Inside Back Cover? Is there a high-performing Financial Advisor who wants us to know them by being seen on our Inside Back Cover? Should a Private School or Day Care Center, already serving Newtown Square families, be seen in a big way on our Inside Back Cover? Is there a leading Major Health Provider we all know who should guide our health through our hometown magazine? Will one of Newtown Square’s Jewelry stores be seen showing off their classy Jewelry on the Inside Back Cover every month? Or should the Pizza Shop serving the best pizza in Newtown Square be delivered into Newtown Township homes every month as the Inside Back Cover Sponsor of our hometown magazine? With our magazine arriving in your home every month, this is important. Reader Leaders: Who do you prefer to be our new Inside Back Cover Sponsor of Newtown Square residents? If you have an idea or a “friend in the business,” please let me know because after all, this is your hometown magazine. NS

Your Expert Guide to Senior Living Options by Christina Manning Photos courtesy of Lindsey Poeth, CSA®
Lindsey Poeth, CSA® worked in pharmaceutical market research for 15 years before starting her own company, Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline, a free senior housing placement service for individuals and families. During her years in the pharmaceutical industry, she gathered a lot of feedback from patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals, to ensure their voices were heard. “This opportunity to start my own company fell into my lap,” said Lindsey, “and I jumped at the chance –
The Oasis team offers a compassionate and personalized approach as they help navigate the challenging process of selecting the perfect home for yourself or your family member. A few of their senior housing options include assisted living, skilled nursing homes, retirement communities and respite services. “We often work with seniors or their adult children if the seniors are unable to coordinate their care,” she said. Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline urges families to plan for the future, but many times they are called in to help after a traumatic event such as hospitalization after a fall. “We assist in each step of the way, from the initial conversation, discussing potential communities that fit their needs, organizing tours and ultimately helping to coordinate the move,” said Lindsey.

Oasis works with hospitals and rehab facilities, but also directly with families. “Each family is unique in their needs, so each requires a specialized plan of action,” explained Lindsey.

Oasis Senior Advisors Mainline was started in 2018 and plans on continuing to grow, helping as many families as possible. “I love listening to the stories my clients have – and hearing about their experiences that made them who they are today,” said Lindsey, “I’ve been lucky enough to find out first-hand what it was like to be one of the first women to work as an Engineer in the NASA program, what is was like during the Korean War, and what it’s like to shoot a hole in one – all things that are a bonus for me on top of doing my job!”
These unprecedented times are having a negative impact on our seniors in ways beyond the virus itself. “We are very lucky in our area that many of the Assisted Living communities are COVID-free,” said Lindsey, “in part due to the steps they took to close the doors to outside visitors.” In support of the community during these times, the Oasis team is at the ready, donating PPE to the facilities in greatest needs: nursing homes and hospitals. Oasis Mainline coordinated the delivery of over 500 handwritten cards. “Many of the cards were from local girl scouts and school children, bringing a touch of warmth and love to those residents who were unable to see their families,” said Lindsey. Lindsey, a native of upstate New York, moved to the Philadelphia area in 2005, and currently resides in Chester County. In her spare time, she enjoys running, golfing, gardening, skiing out west and spending time with her two children, both of whom are in high school. “Today, I am able to utilize my experience when listening to seniors and their families, offering assistance, and providing guidance to match them with their ideal assisted living community – a much-needed service that had been lacking in our area.” Lindsey welcomes your senior living options inquiries by phone at 484-453-5544 or by email to LPoeth@YourOasisAdvisor.com. Virtual Arts, Culture, Fun and Games by Liz Burnett While size restrictions continue for indoor and outdoor gatherings, here’s some fresh ideas for bringing the arts to you and for virtually gathering for fun with socially distanced family and friends. VIRTUAL GAME NIGHTS

ARTS TO GO Museums whose collections bring us joy and wonder at the world’s gifted artists are cautiously reopening with many restrictions due to social distancing safety protocols. Until they’re again allowed unlimited visitors, they’ve generously arranged to bring the arts to us. Annenberg Center’s Fall 2020 Digital Season www.AnnenbergCenter.org 215-898-3900
This series of exclusive performances brings some of the best dance and music artists into your home. These one-night-only live performances will include live-chat to connect you with fellow patrons and Q&A with the artists, offering an intimate opportunity to interact with the creators and performers. This series also includes a wide range of intriguing and unique films, many produced by filmmakers on the University of Pennsylvania campus and in the Philadelphia area.
The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology offers many collections and courses to help us appreciate humans past and present, especially by learning about objects made by humans and their many diverse customs and traditions. The EVENTS section of this museum’s website offers descriptions of and registration forms for virtual family-friendly events and also virtual events designed for adults. Some events let you travel the globe without leaving your home! For example, from 4–5pm on Weds Oct 21, you can get to know Mexico’s fascinating culture from its ancient civilizations to its vibrant and complex contemporary society. To preview upcoming events, click on the EVENTS Calendar and scroll down and over to following pages. A 4-part “Southwest Textiles in Motion” class starts Thursday evening October 8. The museum’s Culture Films Series (monthly 2nd Sunday 2pm October–March) showcases films that combine cultural elements and bring to light the concept of active selection, adaptation, or rejection of beliefs. Each film’s showing is a one-time event followed by a Q&A discussion with the director, producer, or cultural expert. Visit the website frequently to discover new interesting offerings.
This year, we’ve all learned to think outside the box for ways to create and maintain feeling connected with one another. Using video conferencing technologies such as Zoom, teams of 2-6 players (depending on the game) can join from multiple locations and enter a virtual room where they can communicate with each other and collaborate on the challenges. If you don’t have a team pre-assembled, you’ll be teamed up with soonto-be friends when the game starts. For the general public, weekend scavenger hunts are available in six cities including the Philadelphia area, and weekend virtual games are available anywhere with internet access. Public scavenger hunts are scheduled every Saturday evening in October. First-come first-served registration in advance is required, and cost is $19 per person, with 25 people max per game. How Boxing Fights Against Parkison’s Disease by Christina Manning Photos from the collection of Dr. Jennifer Brown, PT, DPT
L-R: Tracy Finney, PT, and Dr. Jennifer Brown, PT, DPT
You don’t have to have experience as a fighter or boxer to join Rock Steady Boxing. You just have to show up and have fun! That’s the motto of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to “fight back” against Parkinson’s disease (PD). “For Parkinson’s patients who have been suffering for years or even those newly diagnosed, this program can change the course of the disease and improve patients’ quality of life,” said RSB Broomall Founder/Director Dr. Jennifer Brown, PT, DPT. “Our classes are led by physical therapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists who specialize in PD and PD Plus diagnoses such as Lewy body dementia.” It’s estimated that more than 1 million people in the United States are diagnosed with PD, a degenerative movement disorder that can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function. Founded in 2006, RSB was the first program in the country dedicated to the fight against A pre-COVID live RSB class Parkinson’s. They now in Broomall, doing planks have 700+ affiliates worldwide. The boxing routines focus on posture, balance, walking, voice and socialization, and are tailored to meet an individual’s needs. Dr. Jennifer (“Jen”) Brown, PT, DPT is the Founder/ Director of the Broomall and the Main Line RSB affiliates. She earned her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Springfield College in 1996, and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Temple University in 2008. After working for Main Line Health for 15 years, Jen founded Dynamic Home Therapy & Neurofit (DHT; www.LiveDynamicNow.com) in 2011. DHT provides neuro-based treatments to patients in their own homes as well as to folks in assisted living facilities. DHT’s staff of OTs, PTs and SLPs work with patients with PD as well as Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury and other movement disorders. 20

Jen’s area of expertise is in adolescent and geriatric physical therapy with the neurologically impaired population. In 2009, she received her Geriatric Clinical Specialist certification, and in 2011, she was certified in LSVT BIG for PD, a treatment approach that addresses the movement aspects of the disease and leads to significant improvements in function, balance, and gait. Her inspiration to go into this field came from personal experience. “I helped care for my grandfather when he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease in his 80s,” said Jen. “I wanted to help people be able to do more than just sit in a chair.” For years, Jen was interested in starting her own RSB affiliate, knowing the impact it could have on her patients as well as other people with PD or other neurological conditions. “I wanted a program for my DHT patients, to keep them motivated after they were discharged from their therapy,” Jen said. “It also can be a built-in support group for everyone, to help with depression and anxiety, which are very common symptoms for those with Parkinson’s disease.” After becoming certified in RSB in 2017, Jen, along with her Assistant Manager Tracy Finney, PT MSPT, opened an RSB affiliate in Wayne, which since moved to Devon. In 2018, she opened the Broomall affiliate (Broomall.RSBAffiliate.com) in Young Forever Fitness. In-person RSB classes typically had about 10 members plus a coach and volunteers. In addition to Jen’s team that teaches classes on a rotating basis, she also has a Wellness Leader, Barrie Greenberg, DPT, who performs the intakes for new members. Caregivers or other care partners can attend and are referred to as their “corner person.” “We’ve had members as young as 40 years old up to some in their 90s,” said Jen. “We can tailor the workout to all different abilities and different stages of the disease.”
Each week, a different “theme” was offered, but every theme focused on optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, voice, cognition, balance, posture and overall strength. Since COVID-19 has forced all gyms to stay closed, RSB Broomall has used Zoom to offer virtual classes for its members. Although they can’t do the same workouts at home on the bags, they’ve been able to offer shadow boxing, yoga, voice A virtual RSB class and tai chi, and they’ve even offered cognition classes as well as guest speakers. Because they’ve allowed members from different RBS affiliates to join the virtual classes, they have close to 70 members who hop on 3–5 days a week. “There is such a camaraderie with the group that we’ve also added virtual coffee and happy hours as well as trivia nights. The group loves catching up with each other before we start our classes so I always give them a few extra minutes to chat!” said Jen. Newtown Square resident Ted has been a member of RSB for the past 2 years. “I joined Rock Steady the day after I retired and it’s been a lifesaver,” said Ted. “It has improved some of
my symptoms, and the friends I’ve met there have become like family!” Betinna, another Rock Steady boxer from Newtown Square, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 14 years ago when she was only 34 years old. “Rock Steady Boxing has been a saving grace for me,” she said. “Parkinson’s takes a little away from you every day, but the Rock Steady regimen helps me fight back, quite literally. It’s about maintaining physical strength and dexterity. But it’s also the emotional support and genuine friendships. Jen and her team keep me coming back every day.”
Betinna, a Rock Steady boxer from Newtown Square
Whether it’s in person or virtual, RSB is a fun way to stay fit, protect the brain, and meet new people! Although a cure for Parkinson’s disease may be many years away, there’s evidence that by participating in the RSB program, progress can be made in all stages of the disease. “I always tell people who may be nervous about trying RSB, just jump in. It can change the course of your life,” said Jen. “Hope really does live here!” NS

Is Your Gas Fireplace Winter-Ready? This year has been one of the most unique/different years any of us have been through. 2020 has been full of business and school shutdowns, extended quarantines, followed with gradual business and school reopenings (some in person and others virtually). All the while, masks have become the new norm. For most of us, summer flew by because, come to think of it, there was not much of a summer to be had. We have been stuck at home, trying to get home projects done and parents trying their best not to let their children drive them up a wall. This is a great time for homeowners to get a jump start on maintaining their gas fireplaces. Gas fireplaces add wonderful ambiance to any room and can be great heat supplements (especially if an unfortunate power outage occurs), but they have a nasty habit of not working when homeowners need them most. When you call the establishment where the gas fireplace came from and request a service appointment, you'll likely learn there is already an extreme backlog for service. This is because many homeowners do not think about service or maintenance until their gas fireplace is not functioning properly. This always seems to happen in the middle of winter if a gas fireplace is not properly maintained. Preventative maintenance is the best type of maintenance, and homeowners with gas fireplaces can avoid waiting several weeks for service during the cold winter months by being
proactive and having their fireplace cleaned and serviced in the early fall. How often a gas fireplace should be serviced depends on the manufacturer and model. Also, knowing whether the fireplace damper is opened (vented) or closed (vent-free) or if the unit is behind a solid single-glass window (direct vent) will aid in expediting service calls. Gas fireplaces do require a level of maintenance similar to house furnaces and air conditioning systems, and as long as they are maintained properly, they can provide heat and ambiance without interruption during the frigid days of winter. So, enjoy the fall transition from summer to winter but do not forget about the gas fireplace. Getting it serviced prior to the cold winter months helps homeowners avoid a potential operation lapse or a frustrating long wait for service. NS
Value, at the end of the day, is what bridges the gap between low price desires and the premium products we offer at Scott’s Fireplace Products. 484- 422- 8334

If You’re Thinking of Purchasing New Carpet, Consider This There’s a LOT to think about when purchasing carpet! These days, the material the carpet is made of can vary widely: You can choose from carpet made of nylon, polyester, Triexta or wool. All higher-end carpets will wear well. Keep in mind that the more you vacuum any carpet, the better it will wear. All carpets have some type of stain resistance, but the recommended level of stain resistance is based on where in your home or office the carpet will be installed. For example, for bedrooms, where you don’t usually eat food or drink beverages, minimum stain resistance carpet would be fine. And in bedrooms, you also don’t need to install top-of-the-line carpet or an upgraded pad. You can use almost any type of carpet with a regular pad. So, for a bedroom, your selection can be based on your personal preference, desired comfort and budget.
the liquid stains out of the pad. Again, the function that the room or area serves in your lifestyle can and should help you determine what type of carpet pad is best. As far as cleaning goes, all carpets need to be cleaned by a certified carpet cleaner every 12 to 18 months, to keep the carpet warranties in effect. If you need to file a claim, the mill will require proof (such as a receipt) of each time the carpet was cleaned. To understand all the different carpet styles and grades and to be sure you purchase what best suits your particular needs, it’s always wise to talk with your carpet professional. NS
Marple Newtown’s Carpeting & Floor Covering Expert
For stairs, living room, dining room and other high-traffic and/or food-consumption areas, you should definitely consider a higherquality carpet so it will wear and clean better. For a basement, where you may occasionally get a little water or moisture, you should consider purchasing an indoor/outdoor carpet. And what type of carpet pad is best, standard or moisture barrier? Have you ever cleaned your carpet and it looks great and then, after a few days, the stain comes back? That’s due to the stain getting into the pad. Moisture barrier pads help keep

Charlie Kennedy:
The SSC Team, 2019 Middle Atlantic Senior Swimming Champions
Two Paths, One Journey by Christina Manning Photos from the collection of Charlie Kennedy We’re delighted to share this “Senior Profile,” about Charlie Kennedy, a Newtown Square resident who felt a calling towards two different careers: music and swimming. “My parents met through music, and they always had classical or Broadway music playing throughout the house. My first love was music,” said Charlie. He was classically trained on the piano and also played the pipe organ. Aware of his deep love for music, his father took him to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra for his birthday. “It was a profound experience,” recalled Charlie. When Charlie was 9 years old, he shifted his focus to swimming and what ensued was a “50+ years love affair with the sport,” said Charlie. He first started at St. Albans Swim Club, then at 10, he made the Suburban Swim Club team, as the Suburban Seahawks Club (SSC) team was known back then. He graduated from Marple Newtown High School, and then attended the University of Iowa on an athletic scholarship awarded to

I found that playing music took me to another place and helped me relax from the pressures of Division One Athletics,” said Charlie. The love Charlie and his parents, Pat and Lee Kennedy, had for music turned into a professional career for all of them: They became a musical trio called “The Kennedys.” “We performed everywhere we could,” said Charlie, “from weddings and funerals to anniversaries. We were there for people in the good times and bad times.” All three of them sang, with his mother covering many of the lead vocals. His father played the clarinet and Charlie composed the vocal and musical arrangements. “The Kennedys” performed together until 2014. “It was a privilege,” said Charlie, “and I will forever cherish those memories I made with my parents.” During college summers, Charlie came back to St. Albans, to help coach their team. In the summer of 1982, some swimmers’ parents approached him about interviewing for the position of Head Coach at SSC. “The club’s membership had greatly decreased and they weren’t even sure if they could keep the lights on,” explained Charlie. He was, however, intrigued by the idea of being the Head Coach at the club he grew up swimming at. “I wanted to help rebuild and establish this club as an elite program,” said Charlie, “so I took the job.” Still SSC Head Coach 38 years later, Charlie’s main role is choosing the swim meets, planning out the season and basically overseeing anything that has to do with the swim team. “I’m very fortunate to have amazing Assistant Coaches. I could not run this program by myself,” said Charlie. “Their level of expertise is a big reason why this program has been so successful!” In 2016 and 2017, Charlie’s swim team came in 1st Place for the Middle Atlantic Junior Championships. The following two years, they came in 1st Place for the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships - four gold trophies in four years! Charlie’s expertise and dedication earned him the honor of being named 2019 National Club Swimming Association (NCSA) Coach of the Year.
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Charlie and SSC. In 1996, Newtown Square got 30” of snow and the weight caused the club’s roof to buckle. “We wondered how we would survive!” recalled Charlie. For the next six years, SSC’s swim team used Swarthmore College’s pool. In February 2002, SSC coaches and swimmers were thrilled and delighted to start using their brand-new facility. Charlie said the most enjoyable part of his job is working with the kids. “As a single guy, my path was different than many people’s,“ said Charlie, “but I’ve had the opportunity to work with kids all these years.” Looking back at his own swimming career, Charlie understands how challenges he faced in athletics have helped him face life’s challenges. “The lessons and skills you learn are invaluable. Athletics teaches you how to work together as a team, push through setbacks and challenge yourself. Being able to work with these kids, mentor them and help them navigate their path is really rewarding.” “The Kennedys” performing in the July 2000 Rose Tree Summer Festival

Andrew Austria has worked with and been mentored by Charlie Kennedy since joining SSC's coaching staff in 2015. Andrew is so impressed with Charlie’s knowledge, dedication and achievements that he recently nominated Charlie to the International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA) Hall of Fame and also to the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Hall of Fame.
Charlie Kennedy and Danielle Mackey, MNHS grads and MNHS Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees
“Charlie uses first-hand experiences to help his swimmers meet the challenges in their demanding sport,” said Andrew. “Charlie’s list of accomplishments speaks volumes about his compassion and dedication to the sport,” continued Andrew, “but what’s most impressive is how Charlie is so involved and invested in what he does and how he customizes each swimmer's goals and then works so hard to help each one succeed.” Danielle Mackey has known Charlie since she was 10 when he coached her on the St. Albans Swim Club team. She continued being coached by Charlie when he became SSC’s Head Coach, and with his mentoring and her skill and determination, Danielle became Charlie’s first Olympic Trials Qualifier swimmer. Her love of the sport motivated her to work with Charlie as a Coach at SSC for the past 17 years. “I’m fortunate to have known Charlie,” said Danielle. “He’s a dear friend whom I’ve watched wear many hats to help thousands of swimmers from Newtown Square and the surrounding areas to reach their greatest potential, not just in swimming but in life. Charlie treated the best swimmers the same as novice swimmers.” Charlie Kennedy hopes to continue coaching as long as he can and possibly also continuing with his music career. “I’ve had two careers, but they’ve rarely intersected,” reflected Charlie, “almost like two different hemispheres of my brain, but both have been very good to me.” Do you know a Senior Newtown Square resident in service to our community? Who is the most significant person in the history of Marple and Newtown? My vote goes to Dr. John G. Thomas.

Born near Paoli in 1844, he enlisted at age 18 with the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served as 2nd Lt. on the staff of General O. O. Howard. Wounded in the thigh in 1864 while delivering a dispatch near enemy lines, he carried that bullet in his leg for the next 75 years.
the world and served heroically through smallpox epidemics and the 1918 flu epidemic.
After the war, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1869, began practice as a family physician, settling at a house on West Chester Pike near today’s Gauntlett Center. An ex-cavalry officer, he rode to his patients first on horseback, and later by horse and buggy, in all kinds of weather. When automobiles appeared, Dr. Thomas was one of the first doctors to travel to his patients by car. A practicing physician for 70 years, he brought more than 2,000 babies into
The young doctor joined Marple Presbyterian Church in 1871, and served as clerk of sessions for 60 years; treasurer for 51 years; and Sunday school superintendent for 50 years. He was one of the promoters of the idea of a joint Marple-Newtown high school, and in 1914, he gave 4 acres of his land on which was built the first Marple Newtown High School. He served for 40 years on the Newtown school board, and 12 years as President of the Marple Newtown school board.

Dr. Thomas died in 1939 at age 95, and was honored as “adhering to the highest ideals of his profession, living in the service of all, and loved by all whom he served.” His secret to such a long and productive life: “I have worked hard and never been afraid. And maybe I should add that I’ve always eaten plain food. With all the advances in medical science, people were healthier in those long-ago days.” Dr, Thomas rests in the Marple Presbyterian Cemetery, alongside Sproul Road. I pass him every day on my commute, and salute him – honored veteran, community volunteer, beloved physician. Preparing Your Vehicle for Our “Salt Belt” Roads Fall’s cooler temperatures are surely a welcome relief after summer’s scorching heat. While it’s so pleasant to get outdoors again, you’ll no doubt be enjoying outdoor activities and preparing your house for winter’s freezing temperatures and harsh weather ahead. It’s just as important to prepare your vehicles for such extreme weather conditions. Today, the way to prepare vehicles for winter is much easier than it was years ago. With today’s advanced fluids, changing your antifreeze is no longer needed before the first cold snap. The key is to make sure all of your vehicle’s maintenance checkpoints are caught up. If the fluids have been changed or checked at the scheduled mileage, then just be certain that they are full. It’s a good

idea to always have a little extra windshield washer fluid on hand because salted roads can make a mess of your windshield. Fall or early winter is a perfect time to change wiper blades. Have your battery and charging system checked. Batteries hate extreme temperature changes. Always perform a visual inspection as well as a load test before winter and again before summer. Wet vent caps and corroded terminals are signs of acid leakage and potential problems. For even a quality battery, you should expect only about five years of reliable service. Have your tires checked! Tire pressure is a great start, of course, but overall tire condition is critical. To pass safety inspection, a minimum of 2/32 of an inch of tread is required, but in winter weather, that is not enough space to clear slush from under the tire and enable it to make contact with the road, as it’s designed to do. For winter months, 3/32 – 4/32 of an inch is the ideal tread. Also examine the sidewalls: If you see cracks, let a professional check the tires. Sidewall damage can be a safety issue.

There Was a French Drain:
A Case Study
There once was a Marple Newtown homeowner who had a meticulously cared-for home. Every shrub was pruned and fertilized to perfection. Trees were planted selectively through the yard, to create shade. Over 30 years, the property had been upgraded with functioning gutters and exterior grading, and every fall, the house perimeter was raked out. But this homeowner believed he did not want or need to install a french drain. His floor drain and sump pit did a good job for the back door. And like many of his neighbors, he ran several dehumidifiers, which created a very hot basement. One day in August 2020, 8" of rain fell, and the total rain that month was over 14", causing moisture problems for his

basement’s cedar paneling and custom carpet with built-in bookshelves. Instead of cutting the walls 2½ feet off the floor to do mold treatment and install a french drain, the baseboard trim was removed, and a jackhammer and pick were used to tunnel under the wall studs. A french drain was installed without damaging the walls and at no additional cost. (This is one of many cost-saving waterproofing solutions that typically take decades to learn and perfect.) The cedar wall panels still looked great after they were wiped clean of the mold. The property was listed and sold with a fully warranted french drain system transferred to the new owner. Another similar case occurred for a couple who traveled extensively for business for weeks at a time. Their basement had a few leaks, but they were more concerned that stagnant water on the basement floor would create mold and bad smells. An emergency sump pump that would discharge outside was installed. During their first trip away, the hot water heater ruptured and continuously spilled steaming hot water on the floor. Though the basement didn’t flood due to rain water, without this emergency provision there would have been no stopping the basement filling up like a bathtub. Though the basement was like a sauna, the emergency sump pump worked as designed, and it prevented total destruction. Another homeowner had three dehumidifiers. After a crossvented windows solution was offered that would do a far better job and would use no electricity, the dehumidifiers were eliminated. The basement is now much drier, less noisy, has no mildew and no electric bill. Sometimes an ounce of prevention is the cure when the big rain comes! The new normal in weather is to have extremes in dryness, rain, wind and even hurricanes and spot tornadoes. What used to be a “once every 50 years” storm is now just a normal weather event. Keep venting the basement for humidity, mold control, Radon removal and breathable clean dry air. NS

Treat Your Body Right
and Get Rid of Inflammation Do you have pain in your joints all the time? Are you having issues with weight gain or low metabolism? Do you experience constipation, indigestion or irritable bowel syndrome? Are you always tired, fatigued or lethargic? If so, you could have an inflammatory disease. Inflammation in itself is not harmful. Your body is very smart, and sometimes it will create a layer of inflammation to protect you from further damage. It will also remove harmful debris like irritants and pathogens so the healing process can begin. For example, when you roll your ankle, your body goes into protection mode and will create a layer of inflammation to protect it from further damage, namely a fracture. So, in this case, an inflamed ankle is a good thing. Inflammation only becomes a problem when it stays in there and becomes chronic enough to be diagnosed as an inflammatory disease. The type of inflammatory disease depends on where its symptoms occur in the body. Inflammatory diseases include allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases, coeliac (or celiac) disease, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s
Disease and even fibromyalgia. Most people do not find out that they have chronic inflammation until they’re diagnosed with an inflammatory disease. However, you don’t have to wait until you’ve been diagnosed to treat the condition. You can fight off such debilitating disease by treating your body right through some lifestyle changes, one of which is regular chiropractic care. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments help reduce the production of two inflammatory cytokines, which can reduce inflammation throughout your body. Chiropractors focus on your body’s overall health and well-being, and chiropractic treatments reduce stress and inflammation in the body. A misalignment of the spine, whether it was caused by toxins, trauma or stress, can hinder the optimal function of the nervous system. When the nervous system cannot fully function as it is designed to, health issues can arise. As gentle chiropractic adjustments to the spine remove those misalignments, symptoms of fibromyalgia, pain and fatigue improve, as does your quality of sleep.

In addition to chiropractic care, a balanced diet and regular exercise are very important because they’re a natural way to treat inflammation. Remove from your diet the foods that are known to cause inflammation such as sugar, dairy and simple carbohydrates. Eat more naturally anti-inflammatory foods such as colorful veggies, nuts, ginger, rosemary and seeds. Supplements such as probiotics, turmeric, and fish oil are also known to help fight inflammation. With some simple lifestyle changes and routine chiropractic care, you might just be on your way to feeling better soon! NS

The Importance of Exercise During the COVID-19 Pandemic Exercising regularly is important for everyone during “normal” circumstances. In these unsettled times, exercise is essential in more ways than one. Exercise boosts the immune system, reduces stress, prevents weight gain and improves sleep. Getting and staying as healthy as possible is always important and worth the time and the effort — and even more important this year than ever — so that your body is better prepared to fight off infections. As we cope with the new coronavirus pandemic, social distancing and changes in everyone’s everyday schedules, every aspect of our lives has been turned upside down, and this

We may even have gained a few extra “quarantine pounds.” Regardless, you can still safely participate in physical activity by exercising with your family, getting outdoors, using online fitness resources, taking a virtual class and setting exercise goals. Our body was designed to move, and when movement is reduced slightly or greatly for short or long periods of time, health issues and symptoms can start to occur. So let’s get up and move!
