Christmas shopping Bonanza Please come along and support us on Saturday 3rd December 2011 at Bewdley, Parish Rooms, Wribbenhall. 10am-3pm Admission £1.00
Come and support Neil from Bewdley
On Thursday 21st July 2011, Neil Ree, who lives in Wribbenhall, very sadly lost a leg in a motorbike accident. Married with two young children, Neil is a window fitter and a group of his friends are raising money, so that he can be fitted with a good false leg. That is where you can help one of our residents.
Neil’s friends are fund raising and are holding a Christmas Shopping Bonaza in the Parish Rooms on the 3rd of December. Can you spare a short time to come along, chat to them and see how we can help Neil to get back to a full active life?
"Neil is an old friend of mine", said Gary Mayner. "The NHS can only fit a basic leg for Neil; that is why his friends want to raise money for something much more suitable that will help him get about much better and give him and his family a better quality of life. Any other money that is raised over the cost of the leg will be given to the Air Ambulance." This fantastic service saved Neil’s life and he plans to spend much time in the future raising money for the Air Ambulance.
Gary added, "I know how people from Bewdley and Wribbenhall can come to support our local friends and if you want to know more details, then please email postman@bewdleybridge.org.uk. Thank you for supporting this deserving cause."
The Lions Duck Race
The Lions Annual Duck Race takes place on New Year’s Day in Bewdley. The ‘throw in’ from Bewdley Bridge is at midday, but the hiring of ducks starts at 10 a.m. to enable the Lions to register the hundreds of participants. Hiring and registering a duck costs £3 and all money raised goes to support good causes. Do join the Lions on New Year’s Day at this extremely popular event
Editorial News
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
As yet another Christmas comes around, it set me thinking about why Christmasses come around so much faster than they used to. I find myself wondering where a whole year went when I wasn’t looking. I turn the pages of next year’s Bridge calendar (incidentally, it has been a great success and we had to reprint it to meet the demand, but there’s still some left if you’re quick) and see that frozen river. Really twelve months ago? Look at that summer riverside! Can it be six months ago?
There are various theories about why time flies ever faster as we age. One theory says that twelve months is a fifth of your lifetime when you’re five, but a fiftieth of a – ahem – more mature person’s. A fifth is perceptually much, much longer than a fiftieth, of course. Another theory points out that most of what happened last year when you are five happened for the first time, which made it both more important and more memorable. Most of what happened to me last year was the same old same old. Which leads me to think that focusing on what I do, moment by moment, while almost impossible, is probably a goal worth trying for. Living in the moment, the self-help books call it. Not so easy when you’re in yet another boring meeting at work hearing some Bright Young Thing telling you, with great excitement and enthusiasm, about that idea we all tried out that failed five years ago. Possibly well worth doing when we walk round our lovely town admiring weak wintry sun on the ancient brickwork. So a message to all of us, whether we’re five or fifty. Let’s treat this December with fresh eyes and delight in all the exciting events you’ll find in this month’s Bridge!

A Christmas Warning
Please don’t buy me a Poinsettia – Buy me anything, a Primrose or a Violettia, But – please – don’t buy me a Poinsettia. I really don’t mean to upsettia – Yes, I know it’s seen as a proper jetsettia – But there are dozens of plants I like so much bettier Than a Poinsettia. The thought of it makes my palms grow sweatier, And my fretting becomes even frettier; My temperature rises like a mini-Mount Etnia, So you must understand I’m not going to lettia Buy me a Poinsettia. If you buy me one I’ll have to forgettia, I’ll deny that I ever even mettia, My gang will be ordered to go out and gettia, And all manner of nasties will start to besettia, Then the outcome will be a frightful vendettia – Please don’t buy me a Poinsettia. Bewdley Library Well, it's that time of year again! Don't forget that the lovely Cards for Good Causes volunteers are with us until Saturday 17th December for your card and small gift needs.
Some years ago a film called 'The Day After Tomorrow' came out, about a sudden ice age gripping the northern hemisphere. New York was rapidly flooded, followed by a terrifying freeze, which wiped out anyone unfortunate enough to be outside at the time. A handful of people managed to survive. How? They went to the Library!
It was up several steps and therefore stood above the flood waters. Food and drinks in the dispensing machines held off starvation/dehydration. A selection of books (mainly tax and law ones) was used to make a fire to keep warm. One of the librarians even managed to look up the heroine's injury and identify the lifesaving medicine she needed, so that the hero could risk life and limb going outside to get some. Now that's what I call a public service.
I wouldn't recommend trying to sit out the next ice age here, (nor floods for that matter), although perhaps this highlights what useful places libraries can be. What will you use yours for next year? Merry Christmas!
Marie Curie Cancer Care has a brand new fundraising group in Kidderminster and we’re looking for new members to join us! Fundraising Groups make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds we need so that Marie Curie Nurses can continue to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes. By being part of Marie Curie’s new fundraising group, you will join our current members by organising fundraising activities and collections in the local community, encouraging new volunteers to help the charity, as well as supporting Marie Curie’s major fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party. Being a member of a Marie Curie fundraising group allows you to meet new people and have fun whilst in the knowledge that you are supporting local Marie Curie Nurses. If you are interested in hearing more about us please contact Catherine Butt on 0117 942 7132 or email catherine.butt@mariecurie.org.uk

Community Transport Helpline
Here’s some jargon, “we aim to provide a transport system that is tailored to the needs of the individual” and what on earth does that mean in reality? Well, we do our very best to make an arrangement between somebody that needs a lift with a volunteer driver to get them somewhere and then back at the times required. So, if you don’t have access to a family or a friend’s car, or there isn’t a bus or train going your way, then we’ll do our best to help. Sounds pretty easy, well it is if there were just one or two trips to manage and lots of drivers to call on. In reality it is not quite that easy as we operate from Monday to Friday over pretty well the whole of Wyre Forest District and out as far as Tenbury Wells. In this area we provide trips for hospital, doctors and dental appointments, visits to shops, hairdressers, opticians, banks and post offices and to support organisations and groups. Our volunteers, who are paid a small sum to cover their running costs, make themselves available when they can, are allocated to clients to provide the most efficient and cost effective service and so keep running costs as low as possible. Our service is not strictly limited to local trips; there are drivers who will travel to more remote destinations, so a trip to the seaside is not out of the question if we can do it. A great bonus for us is having two wheelchair cars; this means we can manage trips for passengers in wheelchairs or with a mobility scooter and as a further plus point their escorts can also be carried. All this sounds pretty good and it certainly is, but in keeping with all organisations working like this, we are dependent on the goodwill of drivers and volunteers to keep the service going. It is a privilege to work for such an organisation knowing that what you do contributes greatly to individuals and to our community and in turn is much appreciated. If you feel that you want to help either as a volunteer in the office or as a driver of either your own or a wheelchair car, then please contact us on 01299 405832.

Halloween Spooks with 2nd Bewdley Brownies
For the last Brownie meeting before half-term, we all came dressed in our finest Halloween outfits. We had fun eating doughnuts from string, with hands not allowed, apple bobbing and mummy wrapping. We ended the evening with a game where, if you were lucky enough to roll the dice and get a 6, you could have a go at picking up sweets‌easy you think‌but have you tried with chopsticks??? Now we are in the weeks leading up to Christmas and still have lots of fun things planned. Look out for us just before Christmas delivering your Christmas cards. Wishing you all a Happy Christmas Gill Robinson & 2nd Bewdley Brownies

True taste of Wyre Forest beef, lamb and pork
People in and around Bewdley now can have the opportunity to buy beef, pork and lamb herds that graze naturally on pasture land in the National Nature Reserve. If you want to taste the magnificent meat from all of these animals raised naturally in the Wyre Forest, then make sure that you contact Uncllys Farm. The lamb and pork were made available in late November with the Beef on the 16th December. For full details, email your address to info@wyreclt.org.uk. Uncllys Farm is also now providing a new monthly subscription scheme where you receive four boxes a year of their produce. Again for more details email your address to info@wyreclt.org.uk. The boxes are supplied in April/May (BBQ box with burgers, sausages, steak and a bag of local charcoal), early Autumn (two mixed cases of new season apple juice), November (half a lamb, supplied fresh, cut ready to use) and December (box of beef from the grass reared Dexter cattle). Wyre Community Land Trust raises fine traditional British animals such as Dexter cattle, Tamworth pigs and Jacob lambs. The animals graze and forage naturally in stress free conditions in the woods, orchards and meadows of the Wyre Forest. “These animals graze naturally with excellent husbandry and stress free conditions, all of which makes a major contribution to the quality of the beef” said Farm Manager Mark Cleaver. “We use a local abattoir where the beef is hung for 21 days to give its rich taste and texture. All our beef comes from Dexter Cattle, which originated from south west Ireland and are descended from the predominantly black cattle of the early Celts. Dexter cattle are renowned for their good texture and excellent quality brought upon by marbling of the beef. The pigs that we raise include Berkshire/ Large Black/ Gloucester Old Spot as well as Jacob sheep.” For further information please contact Mark Cleaver: 01299 488083 email : mark@wlt.org.uk

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Traidcraft Christmas Fair in St Anne’s Church. We had an excellent day with sales of nearly £3,900, which is 10% up on last year – a wonderful result in these difficult economic times.
There is an enlarged stall in St Anne’s up until Christmas with a good selection of cards and festive goodies, as well as gifts and the usual food items. So do come and browse. I can take orders from the catalogue, but do hurry as some lines are selling out fast.
The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, reminds us that “millions still live in absolute poverty and urgently need the sort of practical help that Traidcraft can offer.” As we prepare for Christmas with its traditions of giving, it’s good to know that each purchase we make with Traidcraft not only provides fair work and wages, but gives us the opportunity to make a difference – to change the world. Thank you again for your support this year and Happy Christmas! Elaine Barbour 01299 400617 barboursbewdley@btopenworld.com
Rural Skills Training Programme 2012
Community News
A programme of training courses designed to offer new skills and employment opportunities to those living in rural Worcestershire is being set up by Bewdley Development Trust in partnership with the Wyre Community Land Trust. The courses will cover all aspects of running a smallholding and other countryside skills such as fencing, hedgelaying and charcoal burning. On the food production side, there will be bread making in a wood-fired oven and turning fruit into pickles and chutneys. Those with fruit trees can learn how to prune them and then turn the end product into juice or cider. All the courses will be held at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. Eligible applicants from Rural Worcestershire will pay only £25 per course (plus materials costs in some cases) due to funding from the LEADER programme. Call Ellie or Peter at Bewdley Development Trust on 01299 405516 or email info@bewdley.org.uk for full information and bookings. I always try and take notice of the danger warnings about internet social networking sites such as Facebook. However, in my neck of the woods there are far more interesting networks than FaceBook and you don’t have to go near a computer to use them. The most efficient of all local networks is what’s known as the Severn Valley Doggie Network or the (SVDN). It’s possibly faster than FB because no one has to wait for anyone else to log on. It’s also less restrictive because there are no privacy options and no moderators. Information posted at 9am will have reached most corners of the town by 10am. How this works is a mystery, like the internet. It is certainly a very entertaining network, because, thanks to the beauty of Chinese whispers, an original piece of information can arrive at any destination in any form. I like the SVDN network because it makes so many people smile. Membership is completely free and I’m sure you don’t even need to actually own a dog. You can borrow any mutt, get networking and have fun. I am not actually a member because I prefer Facebook. Nora Chatsworth

Community News During October and November a strange sort of littering was going on in the town. Books tucked inside polythene bags were to be seen sitting on benches, hanging off railings, even perched on doorsteps round the middle of town. At first they were treated with considerable suspicion. A few brave souls picked them up, saw what was written on the note inside the bag and happily strode off with the package tucked under their arm. Here are notes from a couple of these St people: Anne’s “Whilst walking through Bewdley with my family on the Book morning of Sunday 16th October, we noticed the odd sight of books left in various places around the town. We picked up Swap one of these books from the bench outside the bank and were approached by a lovely lady who explained about ‘The St. Anne’s Book Swap’. We helped her ‘deposit’ the rest of her books on our walk back home ‘over the bridge’ and although my book (Men from the Boys by Tony Parsons) has yet to be opened, as I am in the middle of another, it will be left in Bewdley for someone else to enjoy when I have finished. What an unusual and lovely idea! Sandra Corner” “I live in Tipton but have a caravan here. In October I found a Bill Bryson book outside Bewdley Library. Have read it and replaced it attached to the railings by the library. Many thanks! Mrs K Follos” Look out for more returnees over the winter!

The Great St Anne’s Bake Off
Community News
On Saturday 10th December, St Anne’s CE Primary School will be hosting The Great St Anne’s Bake Off at the PTA annual Christmas Fayre from 11.30 – 2.30pm. Following the huge surge of interest in home baking caused by BBC2’s The Great British Bake Off, the PTA is hosting two competitions to satisfy Bewdley’s competitive bakers. The children’s competition, open only to children at the school, is to follow a very basic shortbread recipe. The entries have to be undecorated on a plain plate with the child’s name on the underside to allow them to be judged “blind”. However, the adult competition is open to anyone for an entry price of £3. The technical challenge is to make a Chocolate Log, using a Mary Berry recipe of course, with some of the detail removed. Anyone wishing to enter should bring their masterpiece to the school between 11.30 am and 12 noon. You should be aware that the judges will taste the logs, so please don’t expect them back in perfect condition. Please bring plenty of cash with you. Father Christmas will be in his grotto and there will be Christmas crafts to enjoy, refreshments, cakes, bottle and chocolate tombola, games and a few surprise attractions for children. Here’s the recipe. Happy rolling! Mary Berry’s Yule Log (simplified for the St Anne’s Bake off Technical Challenge) Ingredients 4 large eggs 100g caster sugar 65g self-raising flour 40g cocoa powder For the chocolate icing and topping 275g dark chocolate 450 ml double cream 4tbsp apricot jam Icing sugar for dusting Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6. Grease and line a Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. 2 For the sponge, beat together the eggs and sugar. 3 Fold in the flour and cocoa powder. 4 Pour into the lined tin and bake for 8-10 minutes. 5 Remove Swiss roll from the tin, trim the edges and roll up. Allow to cool. 6 To make the icing, melt the chocolate and 300 ml of the cream in a bowl over simmering water. Refrigerate. Whip remaining cream. 7 Unroll. Spread a third of the icing over the surface of the Swiss roll and then spread the whipping cream on top and re-roll tightly. 8 Cover the surface of the cake with the melted apricot jam. 9 Cover with the remaining chocolate icing, dust with icing sugar and garnish. To prepare and cook ahead: Make completely, filled and iced, up to two days ahead. It is best made on the day of serving. To freeze: Freezes well filled, iced or un-iced for up to 1 month. For best results, freeze filled but un-iced.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7TH NOVEMBER 2011
Site Allocation for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople
The Council’s Planning Committee considered carefully their response to the District Council’s consultation on the site at Blackstone off Stourport Road being potentially designated for this purpose. Councillors reviewed the outcome of the two public meetings at Bewdley School (one organised by the District Council and one by the Town Council) that had been held to gauge public opinion. Whilst there was some limited support for the allocation, the vast majority of residents attending had been against for a large number of reasons including: land in Green Belt; risk of flooding; risk of pollution to underground water supply; safety in accessing site off A456; plus others relating to general environmental amenity. Councillors agreed their response would reflect those concerns. Wribbenhall Parish Rooms
Councillors heard how the Parish Rooms Committee is making applications for funding to charitable and other grant giving bodies to cover the cost of refurbishment of this facility. Few improvement works have been carried out in recent times and consequently there is now quite a backlog. Public support as expressed through the Town Council can often increase the chances of grants being given and the Town Council agreed they would give that endorsement. Westbourne Street Car Park
The status of Westbourne Street car park was changed by the District Council last year so that it was no longer an open public car park with 15 spaces but instead reserved for key holders who paid a fee. The question of whether it was better to have a first-come firstserved pay and display arrangement was discussed as there is otherwise very limited parking available in Wribbenhall. It was agreed to make enquiries. Northwood Lane/Riverside North Park Works
Councillors expressed their concern as to what they saw as the lack of formal consultation by the District Council with the Town Council prior to the extensive removal of trees and natural habitat in this area close to the river. The matter had not been considered as an agenda item and hence no prior agreement or consent had been given by the Town Council. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays at 7.30pm are: 5th December, 3rd January (Tuesday), 6th February, 5th March and 2nd April. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Volunteering in Novinki Orphanage Belarus: Part One.
In a fundraiser I held in June, members of the St Anne’s congregation very generously helped me raise money to support my trip to Novinki Orphanage, Belarus with SKIP (“Students for Kids in International Projects”) Cardiff. This report explains about how I got involved with SKIP and what it was like spending time in Belarus. As a fourth year medical student (at Cardiff University) and despite having three very boisterous nephews and a particularly adorable niece nothing prepared me for my time in Belarus! I had volunteered for SKIP Cardiff. SKIP is a nationwide organisation, which has individual “branches” that conduct projects promoting the health and wellbeing of children in different countries. SKIP Cardiff chooses to support the children of Novinki Orphanage in Minsk, Belarus. I was one of nine volunteers to visit Novinki Orphanage as part of “Group 1”. A second group visited Novinki after us to continue our good work. All nine of us stayed together in a small make shift bedroom in the Minsk dental hospital. This did create a fun “sleep-over” atmosphere but could be quite claustrophobic at times! We had heard many negative things about the living conditions for the children at Novinki, about how they were tied up when the misbehaved or made to fight over scraps of food from dog bowls. However our first day experience of the orphanage was surprisingly pleasant. There are over 200 children at Novinki with special needs ranging from mild neurological deficits to developmental delay and physical deformity. They are divided into 5 “Units”, but it was “Unit 4” or “the infirmary” for the high dependency children which was where I was to spend most of my time. Lucy Robinson

December in the Forest
Brrrr! Cold weather is here again. The
berry crop on most trees has been excellent during the autumn but I noticed that the birds were stripping the trees fairly early in the season. I hope they will be able to find enough food for the winter – we’d better keep topping up the bird feeders! Hollies seem to be doing very well in the part of the forest where I live. I thought it would be fun to find out more about this most seasonal symbol and turned to the Flora Brittannica by Richard Mabey. Among all the facts, folklore and anecdotes I found the following: • Holly was cut as winter feed for sheep and cattle. Apparently it is a good source of energy and nutrients, so the deer know what they are doing! A group of hollies cut regularly for feed was called a “hollin” – a word that appears in place (and family) names in the north of England. • There was a widespread belief that cutting down a holly tree brought bad luck. • Perhaps not unconnected to the above, holly is one of the hardest woods and was used to make walking sticks. • Holly is very tolerant of shade and seedlings often sprout from among the bird droppings under trees used as roosts. • The leaves stimulate sweating so were used to treat fevers in colds, flu, bronchitis and rheumatism. There’s plenty more where that came from! Christmas is coming! We will be hosting large numbers of schoolchildren visiting the
forest to enjoy the season and make a natural Christmas decoration to take home. (We hope they’ll also find out a little about the animals that live in the forest and what happens to them in the winter!) Whether you want to gather evergreens and cones for festive decorations or get away from it all, the forest could be the place for you. There are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. Forest Friends meet outside the Forest Café at 10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. The charge is £3 per child. And it’s good to share good news. Since I sent that “Endangered Species in the Wyre Forest” article off last month there has been a stay of execution from the Forestry Commission. The team at the Discovery Centre can now deliver educational programmes to schools and others until 2014/15 while still looking at alternative models of doing things (“facilitating learning”) and doing our best to match income with expenditure. However, we do value everyone's support and would be delighted to receive your messages, which we will keep on file and use when necessary! Linda Iles Forestry Commission
The Air ’s Poetr y
I heard a saying on the radio the other day…“Music is the air’s poetry”.
Yet again this got me thinking. As I was walking over the Bridge last week in the pouring rain, plagued with bags and heavy clothing, I looked around me and one significant thing stood out: the amount of people also listening to music. Whether it’s the chart topping tunes or classical FM that you adore, everybody finds comfort in music. Even if it’s just trying to speed up a journey home in the rain, or relaxing on a cold autumn night, music is able to capture every single emotion we can feel. Bewdley is a place bursting with different sorts of music. Whatever your taste in music, it’s always there when you need it; partying with your friends, crying hysterically on your bed, getting motivated to go for a run or preparing for hours of dull revision! Music is often the words we can’t bring ourselves to speak. I’m happy to say that I live in a town where music is enjoyed, giving all Bewdley residents a place to turn to. From the riverside pubs to farm festivals, music is all around us. What would we do without it? Chris Salter
