The BRIDGE January 2012

Community News

Introducing Chris

My name is Chris D Salter, and I am a 16 year old Singer Songwriter and an aspiring journalist. When I read about just how hard it is to get into university these days, I knew I had to up my game. I couldn't be happier the Bridge has offered to do just that, allowing me to gain valuable experience, which will be more than CV worthy in the future. I think journalism is very exciting, and the Bridge will allow me to push my self intellectually and will improve my skills as an aspiring journalist all the time, teaching me skills needed to survive in this competitive industry. In the future I hope one day to work for a top entertainment publication in a place like London or New York, but for the time being the Bewdley Bridge is my top priority. As a student of the highly regarded Bewdley School & Sixth Form Centre, I hope to add a young person’s view and approach to a wide range of subjects and topics. I'm honoured to be working with such experienced people on a magazine steeped in heritage and history.

Finally, the right stare?

Everybody gets stared at once in a while. Whether it’s when you’re walking off the bus or you’re just out with your friends, we all know a judgmental look when we see one. As a generation, I think the young people have it the worst at the moment, with a headline last week reading “Typical Yobs mug old lady”. This of course is an extreme, and I and my friends have noticed something recently, which is much more positive and closer to home. Last Friday night, (no, not the Katy Perry song) on a very cold evening, we overheard a conversation of a group of elderly women on Severnside South. As we walked past, we heard them say “I’m glad Bewdley kids are like they are, really grounded and bright’. As we walked past these politely chatting women, they smiled at us. Yes, in times where newspapers are reporting muggings and shootings, the two generations of the youth and elderly finally managed to gel together, something which we are proud to say is happening more and more in Bewdley. Chris Salter

Editorial News

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month

So here we are again; house back to normal, almost the last of the irritating glittery stuff removed from that bit behind the bookcase, the freezer replete with pots of turkey soup and chocolate log, and the toys all nicely broken and in the bin.

I know this sounds a bit Bah Humbug, but I actually quite like the way life returns to normal at the beginning of January. My face can remove its “Isn’t-this-all-tremendous-fun?” expression; the last of the visitors has gone and with a sigh, normal service is resumed. My responsibilities down at St Anne’s diminish sharply after the frantic round of special services and events over Christmas – have you any idea of what a church full of small children armed with candles does to my nerves? – and Best Clothes can be safely exchanged for my deplorable but ever-so-comfy fleece-andold trousers combo.

Right, now I’ve got that confession off my chest, I can encourage you all to enjoy what the magazine has to offer this January. Having said that, we do seem to be looking back to last month’s festivities;Ali’s snowy 2010 Christmas, Gavin the cat reflecting on his post-Christmas waistline, and a postlady saying goodbye to her round. Together with, of course, news from all our societies and organisations, and Gary’s seasonal photos.

So put all the decorations back in their box, recycle the cards and settle down by the fire and enjoy your January Bridge. Margaret

Our Christmas lunch was once again a great success. 28 of us sat down to a three-course meal, which was very much appreciated by everyone. The annual Covenant Service will be held on the 15th January at 10.30 a.m. and will be led by Rev. Mary Austin. As we leave another year behind, we think of the three well-loved members of our congregation, Phyllis, Betty and Denis who sadly passed away in 2011. They will be greatly missed, but we also remember the great achievement of Allan Birch, who, at the age of 91, again climbed Mt. Snowdon and raised thousands of pounds for the Help for Heroes charity. As we move into a new year, may we take this opportunity to wish everyone a healthy and blessed 2012.

Christmas 2010

To be honest unless it had been throwing it down with rain we were going to go for a walk on Christmas Day. It had been planned for months and I was determined. We would walk to the river, along the dismantled railway and into the forest. There we would be indulgent (well it was Christmas), cooking bacon sandwiches on a Trangia for lunch, with mulled wine. When I woke I was delighted with the snow; I know to some it was a total inconvenience but to us it made our day magical. Dressed in gear, which wouldn’t be out of place in the mountains, we started our walk, taking loads of photos along the way and surprisingly, only meeting a couple of people but we had a fantastic walk. The forest we know was transformed into a winter wonderland, spectacular views and breath taking scenery! By comparison, this year I am cooking for 11 and relishing the challenge and looking forward to having the family around all day. However, I sometimes think once in a while it is good to do something different, something peaceful, something energetic, something you’ve always wanted to do, something that makes Christmas special & memorable. Ali Leake

Use Soap Nuts!

Make this your New Year's resolution. I heard about soap nuts at Green Belt, a music festival held at Cheltenham Race Course two years ago and have been using them ever since. They are a great environmentally friendly, natural alternative to using washing powders and detergents.

I bought a kilo on the internet a few years ago and am still using them. You put about 6 soapnut shells in a cotton bag and add them to your wash. No softener is required. They are meant to be very good for people with sensitive skins or allergies. You can do 3 washes with the same nuts and then use them in your dishwasher! If you want some fragrance you can add some lavender or other essential oil. I got them from a firm called Salveo but I imagine there are other sources. Perhaps enough of us users can get together and get a local shop to stock them for us?

The website is www.salveo.co.uk (Tel: 0871 461 0113) or go through Amazon.

How many are involved in a funeral at Church?

Someone asked me this question recently. It’s such an important service, not least for the bereaved family, but for many others too. How many people do you need for a church to host such a service? I thought for a moment and then said, ‘You need… A minister – to visit the bereaved family, listen and learn about someone’s life story, help shape the service, frame prayers, say some words of hope and faith. A musician, an organist so that hymns can be sung and sung well. A verger – a welcoming presence - in the background, who opens the building and looks after any number of practical details. Then I thought a little longer and realised you need people who… • Clean the building – from brass candlesticks to the toilet to the carpet and much more besides. • Maintain and repair the fabric of the building itself; give their money to pay the bills, so that the building has heat and light as well as a minister. • Pray week by week and help create that special something; an atmosphere; which means that this is a safe, welcoming place to come and be sad, soulful and to pray. A funeral marks the close of a human life on earth. It’s an opportunity for friends and family to gather to express grief, give thanks and commend the person into God's keeping. How many people from church are involved? I realised it takes many, many people; in fact a whole church community. Keith James

BEWDLEY LIBRARY

In the library service we are always keen to liaise with outside agencies, so it gives me great pleasure to report that we have recently taken some marketing advice from the successful but curiously publicity-shy Mr Ray ‘Crusher’ Logan, entrepreneur and little known lover of all things literary. (His unusual nickname, he tells me, is the result of years of good natured teasing by his business associates regarding his enthusiasm for amateur wine-making, something he enjoys during his frequent visits to his secluded villa in Alicante.) Mr Logan was most distressed to discover that several of our books have not been issued for some time, and suggested that we offer the residents of Bewdley a ‘last chance to borrow’ opportunity to take advantage of our stock. “You have to grab their attention,” he said “Make them sit up and take notice.” And so we have, for a limited period only, our ’last chance’ display, entitled ‘Borrow – or the book gets it’ (kindly suggested by the man himself). We think it’s an offer you shouldn’t refuse...... Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

Rural Skills Training 2012

Community News

A programme of training courses designed to offer new skills and employment opportunities to those living in rural Worcestershire. A series of 6 courses will cover all aspects of running a smallholding and there are other days, which will offer training in countryside skills such as fencing, hedge laying, and charcoal burning. On the food production side, there will be bread making in a wood-fired oven and turning fruit into pickles and chutneys. Those with fruit trees can learn how to prune them and then turn the end product into juice or cider. Eligible applicants will pay only £25 per course (plus materials costs in some cases) as they have been selected under a programme co-financed by RDPE LEADER. All the courses will run from 9am to 5pm and will be held at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley DY12 2LR. The Ruskin Studio at the farm is an award-winning green oak framed building with easy access and a wood-fired range. For further information and bookings contact Bewdley Development Trust on 01299 405516 or info@bewdley.org.uk. Introduction to Countryside Management, Friday 20th January What difference will it make if meadows are grazed or mown? What makes a hedge good for wildlife? Can a small woodland give a financial return? This is a day which aims to answer these and many other questions. We will look at management principles, and real life examples to consider how people and ecological processes work to shape the landscape. Spinning and Wool Crafts, Saturday 21st January What can you do with a sack full of sheep’s fleece? This day course will introduce you to carding, spinning and plying the yarn. The unspun fleece will be sorted and used for projects such as weaving on a peg loom and needle felting. Fencing Masterclass, Friday 27th January It’s not just bashing in posts! Good fencing is a must for the smallholder. You will be learning about the materials, techniques and tools with time to try it all out. Planning and Planting an Orchard, Saturday 28th January There’s a lot to consider: from choosing your tree varieties and rootstocks to how far apart to plant them, and from tree guards to their first formative pruning. This course will give practical experience in planting and protecting young trees.

January in the Forest

Another new year beckons! The days are already lengthening even in the middle of winter and each green bud or bird’s song promises that spring will come. At the Wyre Forest Discovery Centre we have a new programme of events for 2012, which can be picked up from the foyer of the Forest Café or accessed online if you Google “Wyre Forest Visitor Discovery Centre, Forestry Commission”. When you take to the forest on foot or bike this month, you may wonder how our furry friends are getting on during the winter. The grey squirrels will keep you company in all but the nastiest weather, when they may sensibly stay snuggled up in their dreys. Their buried caches of beechnuts, hazelnuts and acorns should keep them alive, supplemented by freshly foraged plants, roots and fungi.

Badgers, foxes and rabbits are able to shelter from the weather underground. The former are able to stay “indoors” for long periods, using up the body fat built up by the bounty of autumn. However, tucked away in their setts, the females may well give birth to the first of the young in January, producing litters of up to five cubs. Foxes and rabbits are more likely to get desperate for food, taking risks such as being abroad in daylight, and turning to foods that are avoided in better times. At this time of the year I often see groups of fallow does moving through the forest at night or in the early morning. We have one white doe in the locality – very beautiful but not camouflaged at all! The rut is over and the

fawns will not be born until June.

We hope that the hedgehogs, whose sad decline has been noted by naturalists and in the media, will have found dry places to hibernate and will have enough reserves of body fat to get through the winter. Mice, voles and shrews have a tough time of it. With their tiny body mass they need to eat frequently, while evading the many predators which would like to add them to the menu. Perhaps the mole is in the best place, searching its tunnels for worms which are sometimes stored for future use by biting off the heads and twisting the bodies into knots! (See “Fauna Britannica” by Stefan Buczacki if you don’t believe me.) The picture is of a wonderful mole sculpture made of slate at the Forestry Commission’s Garwnant site near Merthyr Tydfil.

There are Health Walks every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 for an 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. Forest Friends meet outside the Forest Café at 10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. The charge is £3 per child. WONDERFUL NEWS FOR WRIBBENHALL

At a time when most of the news is bad, we are delighted to announce that Wribbenhall Parish Room committee has been successful in obtaining a grant of £22,500 from the LEADER fund. This will enable the first phase of the refurbishment to go ahead once negotiations on the long awaited lease are completed.

The first phase is to provide a new toilet block with a properly designed facility for use by the disabled, which will have independent external access. This frees up space for a small meeting room, a much needed facility in Wribbenhall, and will enable the hall to operate a dual function for the first time in its history. The LEADER fund has been bolstered by the following generous donations:

• • •

£1,000 from Councillor Gordon Yarranton County Councillor for Wribbenhall, who has promised continuing support. £1,000 from the Civic Society.

£1,700 from Councillor Liz Davies, money from her Mayor’s Charity, which has been released now the future of the Parish Room is secure. £825 (match funding) Barclays Bank PLC Stourport Branch.

Over £2,587 from local support at fund-raising events held during the year.

Over the last 12 months, our membership has more than doubled and there is clearly a growing groundswell of local community support for the up-grading works to the Parish Room. Many members of the community have offered their services for some elements of the work, such as painting and decorating, and this is most heartening to committee members. Further grant funding applications are in the pipeline to cover such works as replacement heating system, new windows, kitchen up-grade and redecoration both internally and externally. Subject to the availability of grants and a new lease from the church, it is planned to have the modernisation of the building completed by the end of 2012. We are so thrilled and really feel that we are now well on the way to restoring this excellent facility for everyone.

If you would like to know more or offer your support in any way we should be pleased to hear from you. Contact: Keith Young 01299 403357 Anne Mace 01299 402204

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat

Community News

Hi all, Hope you had a nice relaxing Christmas. I enjoyed myself immensely. I indulged in a few little treats instead of some of my biscuits. I always make sure my humans don’t give me both, as I’m quite concerned about my waistline and I don’t want to put on extra weight because of having a treat over the festive season. After all, it’s important for me to look my best in case anyone takes my photograph; I’m quite famous in my own way you know! I’m going to be relaxing more this month as November and December was a busy time for me. I had to learn how to use the new computer system at the practice to ensure that I could get this article to you on time. I don’t mind telling you my paws were a bit sore with all the practicing! I did however like the fact that these new computers have a mouse attached – great fun if you want a feline opinion. I also had to spend some time with my new friend Fred the rabbit. Fred came in to the practice as a stray in very poor condition; thankfully he is now well and has found a loving home. Must go now as I need to update my online page, I’m quite a modern cat you know. Wishing you all a very happy new year, Gavin

Up and Running at Eighty

I met a lady the other day with a zest for life that I could only marvel at. She is eighty two, looks a great deal younger and is as busy and occupied as I am. How does she do it?

“Although my health isn’t as good as it used to be I like to keep up my voluntary work. I do various things at St Anne’s church, like serving in the coffee bar, and I like to go on outings. This morning I’m off to the station in Kidderminster to collect some friends. And that’s another thing that keeps me going – lots of friends. It’s always worth making the effort to keep in touch.”

With a daily workout with the crossword from the newspaper and plenty of time with her family, this splendid octogenarian has it sorted. After talking to her I thought it might be interesting to hear from other Bewdley octogenarians. Write a note or an email and tell us who you know who can give younger generations a run for their money. Especially if you are one of them! Margaret Ashmore

I don’t think I’m alone that I feel sad when I see litter in Beau Lieu and beyond. One of the worst stretches for litter is on the Litter riverbank path between the High School and Styles Mill. I had what I thought was a great idea. Perhaps instead of detention or just as something fun to do, pupils might like to help me pick up the crisp packets and chocolate wrappers. It was with some trepidation I visited Bewdley High School today. The staff are just as fearsome to me today as they were over 40 years ago. Despite the smart reception the atmosphere was dire with long faced students sitting about. They did raise a smile when I told them that life got better for me the day I found myself expelled from school. The receptionist was cool and I was at a slight disadvantage explaining the litter problem, because she didn’t know where Styles Mill was; however she quickly disappeared to seek advice. On her return she informed me that the river path was a public thoroughfare and nothing to do with the school. I was told that litter collection by the students was out of the question, because parents would need to give their permission. Ergo: we don’t need permission to drop litter, but we do need it to pick it up. No appointment was in the offing for a chance to discuss any project for litter collection. I was told to take the matter to the County Council. Perhaps it’s the dreaded Health and Safety, but it seems a shame we can’t use some of that energy to encourage our future citizens to help improve their town. Nora Chatsworth All Saints’ Church

Community News

It’s a cold December night, and I really need to hibernate, but there’s a film at the Baptist Church called “The power of community”, and, as I care about community, I will defer hibernation and go....

Well, now I’ve seen it, and have been kicked up the backside by what I’ve seen – it has made me realise that most of us are not just hibernating – we’re either comatose or sleepwalking. The film is subtitled “How Cuba survived peak oil” – within 2 decades it’s likely that we will have to survive the consequences of our oil supply disappearing, and with it an entire way of life.

In the early 1990’s the breakup of the USSR meant that Cuba lost 50% of its oil imports, much of its food, and 85% of its trade economy. People went hungry (every Cuban lost substantial weight), and their oil–dependent transportation system collapsed. Cubans had to change, just as we will have to change. Literally, they got on their bikes! The change for them brought the community together, finding ways of solving the food crisis (co-operative farms, replenishing soil degraded by use of chemicals, using oxen instead of petrol fuelled farm vehicles).

Since the 2006 film, “Cuba has been heralded as an example of how to respond to a sudden and severe shortage of resources. Aficionados of permaculture and urban agriculture look at Cuba as a source of ideas when the oil runs out for good.” (Food Commission: Britain’s leading, independent watchdog on food issues).

The Cubans woke up, because they had to. Their crisis is going to be global, and sleepwalking will let it happen. The Transition movement raises awareness of these issues, and has spread all over the world. Transition Bewdley is part of this, “the most vital social experiment of our time”. Wake up – join this community.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5th DECEMBER 2011

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Working Group

Details of a provisional programme for Bewdley to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee over the four day period 2nd to 5th June next year were presented to the Council. They included the lighting of a beacon to form part of a chain across the country; an outdoor ecumenical church service in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens; a treasure hunt and fancy dress competition for children on a royal theme plus a firework display at the Rowing Club on the Monday night. Finally it was hoped to arrange for up to 60 trees to be planted within Bewdley/Wribenhall to act as a lasting reminder of the Queen’s great achievement. Neighbourhood Planning

The Planning Committee responded to a consultation paper from the government as to how neighbourhood planning may come be implemented now that the Localism Act has gone through Parliament and received the Royal Assent. There was some doubt as to how current procedures might change or how easy it would become to refuse what were otherwise unwelcome planning applications. Footpath: Dowles Road to Riverside via Greenacres Lane

Councillors received details of the County Council’s case in support of the creation of an official footpath along Greenacres Lane, which is to be the subject of a four day public inquiry next February. The application was made as long ago as 1996 and is supported by the Town Council and a large number of users but is opposed by an adjoining landowner. Agricultural Building at Grey Green Lane Wribbenhall

There was considerable public interest in an application upon which the Town Council was being consulted as to the conversion of a redundant agricultural building to form a five bedroom dwelling. Councillors recommended that it be refused on the grounds of intrusion into the Green Belt and the impact of extra traffic onto a narrow lane. The decision to be made by the District Council in the New Year is awaited with equal interest. Future Town Council meetings The next meeting of the Town Council at The Guildhall will be on Tuesday 3rd January at 7.30pm. Future meetings also at 7.30pm will then be held on the first Monday in each month, which are: 6th February, 5th March and 2nd April. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL
