The BRIDGE February 2012

Trashion ……
Thoughts ‘n’ Threads
How often have you looked at a dress, skirt, top, jeans and thought,“What can I do with this? Into the charity bag – gone!”
There are lots of stores where you can buy stuff that’s cheap, so why bother anyway? Well, you could have a go at ‘upcycling!’ The thing that has a little hole in it, or is too tight or loose, or has a mark on it - change it!
There could be a bag, a cushion, a pair of mittens, some wrist warmers, trousers, a dress for a little one, waiting to be created. Your old clothes can be recycled, used for extreme knitting, rag rug making, or peg loom weaving. If you are interested in peg loom weaving and want to find out more, we have a half day course on 5 February 2012. At the moment we meet once a month in the evening. If you would like to find out more, email – trashion@hotmail.co.uk

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
A bit of a nothing month, is February. Everyone’s back to work, school or routine; the weather’s usually coldish, wettish, and greyish. The big festivals have come and gone, the next bank holiday is a long way off, and anyway, there’s the post-sales austerity drive we’re all making. The Longest Night is ages ago but still the days seem pathetically short and dark. Is there any thing to be cheerful about?
Having done an in-depth survey among my friends I can report that the nearest anyone got to saying a good word for the month was that it is short. Hmm. So am I, and I expect a bit more effort when in need of encouragement than that. Meanwhile, don’t forget to check the magazine for things to do and places to go to help get through the month. Gary and Joe have come up with some cheery photos, and any minute now I’m going to find out what they’ve got for February’s cover. Maybe it’ll be a rainy puddle.
And now I must explain that the last two months have taken a bit more sorting than usual as David Glenn, one of our Bridge team, is off sick at the moment. We wish him a speedy recovery and we’re keeping his seat warm for him. In the meantime we need to enlist more help; in particular, someone who would like to be our editor while I sit at the feet of Martin and learn how to do David’s job. Being editor is a rewarding, frustrating, funny, slightly technical, sociable, unpaid job; if you’re interested, email me at editorial@bewdleybridge.com and I’ll explain more. And there will be no marks for spotting our mistakes during David’s absence! Margaret

THE GREEN CORNER - Energy Saving with New Appliances
Years ago I was horrified by images of working kitchen appliances, just a few years old, being bulldozed into landfill tips as fashion conscious consumers scrapped them to buy the latest models. Recently I decided to use a meter to check out the electricity consumption of our old, leaky, inefficient chest freezer and to compare it with a new “A” rated freezer. Wow! The old freezer was using nearly 8 times as much electricity per day as the new one and this would waste us about an extra £160 per year (not to mention the big impact on our carbon footprint). So the old freezer has now gone to a new home via Freegle. Ah, say the cynics, so someone else can waste electricity using it. Fair point to raise, but people often search there for a temporary or back up items and ours is now just a storage bin for animal feed (not switched on!) and it (and its CFCs inside?) will hopefully be disposed of properly when the time comes. If you are considering a change, do look carefully at both the energy ratings and the annual consumption or running cost figures for possible contenders. Many are very similar but there can be a few surprises. One starting point at the moment is the Which Energy Campaign. This link on their website has useful content available to non-members: http://www.which.co.uk/environment-and-saving-energy/energy Brian Smith

Tails of a Veterinary Practice
Community News
- life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat. It’s been a busy start to the year here. One of my four legged friends Carbonel has been in the wars again last month. It all started when he broke his pelvis after getting hit by a car in November. He had to have x-rays taken so the vets could assess the break in detail and then he was put onto rest and painkillers to allow things to heal. He has told me that he got very bored as he had to stay in a small cage for 6 weeks while he was healing. He finally was allowed to go outside again at the beginning of January. Having been going out for just a week he then caused great concern to his humans. He was not eating his food and was lying around the house and not doing very much. When the vets examined him they found that he had a high temperature and suspected that he had picked up an infection. He was given some injections (my humans tell me they were antibiotics and anti-inflammatory to help bring his temperature down) and within hours he seemed to be feeling much better. I popped down to see him and he was tucking in to a nice tasty lunch. I am glad he is feeling better and hope that he follows my example and stays out of trouble from now on! More from me again next month, Gavin Let’s Get Composting in 2012
This year why not make it a composting year? Consider a compost bin to handle your vegetable peelings, tea bags, banana skins, grass cuttings, woody plants, cardboard egg boxes and shredded paper. About 9-12 months after placing these items in your compost bin, they will have changed into an earthy smelling, dark brown compost. Don’t worry, if it doesn’t look like the fine compost you buy in the shops, just sift out any larger bits that haven’t broken down and place them back in your bin. The compost can then be dug into flowerbeds, used as mulch around shrubs and trees, replenish pots or just sprinkling on your lawn.
Composting is a great way of transforming much of your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for your garden, helping to condition your soil for growing healthy plants. By composting our biodegradable waste we save it from going to landfill, where it will create harmful green house gases like methane. Composting is very inexpensive: all you need is a compost bin and away you go! You could make a compost bin out of old pallets or buy one from Worcestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council. Compost bins are available from as little as £8 (+£5 delivery)* for residents of Herefordshire & Worcestershire; more details can be found at www.hw.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444. A wide variety of compost bins are also available, as are wormeries, bokashi and composting accessories.
For more waste prevention information including composting, local re-use organisations, the love food hate waste campaign and how to reduce unwanted mail visit www.letswasteless.com or call 01905 766883.

Love your fridge
17 billion ‘5 a day’ portions are thrown away each year. Correct food storage helps keep it fresh and tasty for longer and less of the food we buy gets wasted which is good for the environment and our pockets. The right temperature? - Keep fridge temperatures below 5oC. Research shows that up to 30% of our fridges are too warm. A good fridge thermometer costs around £5 and soon pays for itself with the waste avoided. The Right Food? -The fridge is the ideal place to store most fruit (not bananas and pineapples – keep these cool but don’t refrigerate) and veg (not potatoes and onions - keep them in a cool, dark place like a garage, potato/onion bag or pantry). Apples last up to two weeks longer in the fridge and peppers up to a week longer (for part used peppers leave intact and wrap the part pepper).Eggs need to be kept at a constant temperature below 0oC and they keep best in their box stored in the fridge. It’s best not to put bread in the fridge as it goes stale much quicker. Bread keeps better in a cool dark place such as the bread bin or a store cupboard. It also freezes well for use later. days or freeze for another time. Viktoria Salisbury Senior Waste Prevention Officer

How Time Flies!
So many of you have asked about Frazzle, who had such a difficult time on the health front whilst being walked by me. She made a very positive start to her formal training.
Unfortunately, she developed an issue with anything that ‘moved’ under her feet (paws). Withdrawn as a potential Guide Dog, she was earmarked as a potential ‘Buddy Dog’, a new Guide Dog initiative. Dogs were ‘tested’ with children and then, if appropriate, matched with a potential family with a visually impaired youngster. The idea is that the young person begins to take responsibility for the dog - feeding him/her, grooming and exercising the dog as a preparation for Guide Dog ownership, as there is no lower age limit. Frazzle passed the ‘tests’ with flying colours and was matched with a family in Yorkshire. Sadly, the little boy she was going to support is autistic and developed a hair pulling habit, so it was decided the match wasn’t appropriate. Happily, she is now a family pet in Yorkshire, with a family who describe her as ‘affectionate, obedient, loves her walks and is great with the grandchidren’ lucky girl, and lucky family. As I have said before, ‘walking’ puppies is addictive and so rewarding. I have a constant companion who I watch develop from a very dependent 7 week old pup to a dog who can be someone else’s companion and eyes. Thank you Bewdley, for your support over the past year.
If you are interested in ‘walking’ a puppy (full-time); ‘boarding’ a puppy (caring for a pup for a few hours, day, week); fundraising, making a donation please get in touch on 01299 405023). Gabi Wootton

On the 3rd December, Bewdley had an away game to Bustleholme. Bewdley started with Richard Costello scoring with a header from a free kick. The next goal followed shortly with Dan Gittens scoring for Bewdley. Later Simon Rudd sent a rocketing free kick into the top of the net. Bustleholme pulled one back with a penalty. Bewdley then scored a fourth by Ollie Smith. Just before the end, Bustleholme pulled one back to make the final score 4-2 to Bewdley FC.
On the 10th December, Bewdley had a home game against Bromyard Town. Dan Gittens scored a long range shot for Bewdley, then the second goal came from Chris Hough. Before half time, Bromyard pulled one back. In the second half, Dan Gittens scored twice for Bewdley to get a hat trick. The final result: Bewdley won 5-2.
The games against Darlaston and Wednesfield were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.

I went for a walk down past Blackstone in the snow and ice of last winter. I was taking a picture of the frozen river when this robin came and sat on a twig next to me. I happened to have some nuts in my rucksack (I have everything in my ruck sack!) so I put some in my hand and just held it out. He would not have taken them if he wasn’t so hungry.
February in the Forest
When I was a towny (or more of a towny than I am now) I used to think that February was the lowest point of the year. It was dark, cold and usually wet. Now that I am immersed in the forest and fields of Wyre, however, I can see that there is no month of the year that is without wildlife interest and February has its share of encouraging signs of life and growth. The treatment for my version of Seasonal Affective Disorder is to get out in the woods, farm and garden as much as possible. So, what do we find there? For me, the best of all are the snowdrops. Every year I resolve to move the clumps by the back door to a more visible position and generally act on the resolution, but every year some manage to pop up again in various unsuitable nooks and crannies where weed control or grass cutting is bound to damage them. I think they’re just incredibly resilient and I love their determination to bring their delightful little white bells to brighten our winter. Hazel catkins come a close second. The lovely little trees are hard to beat for usefulness to country folk and wildlife, and their male flowers open up on warmer days this month to release clouds of yellow pollen which can be carried by air currents to fertilise the female flowers. The latter are worth seeking out: borne on the same trees but looking like tiny, bright red sea anemones. This is where the hazel nuts will form. As I have to write this in early January I have no idea what the weather will be like when you read it. So far this winter there has been little icy weather and I hope that has continued. Some more rain, though it makes the forest paths unpleasant, would be very helpful to refill the ground water reserves, brooks and ponds which are so vital. Some of the “pools” I know have been empty since last summer. It is remarkable that wildlife such as freshwater invertebrates and their larvae, which rely on these habitats, can persist and re-colonise after such droughts. I hope that many of the toad tadpoles that I saw in huge numbers at the reservoir in Cold Harbour Coppice in May will have survived. On the other hand we may be facing floods in February, in which case you will be laughing ironically! If I was able I would certainly join the happy band of Health Walkers who, led by volunteers, march out every Tuesday and Sunday at 11am to get fit and enjoy both the woods and the company. These walks are free and are just the job to get more active and build fitness. If you are coming for the first time please arrive at 10.30am to complete some health details. During the half-term holiday there will be children’s activities on the Tuesday and Friday from 10.30am to 12noon. To receive details of these activities, which are aimed at 5 to 11 year olds, email wyre.forest.discovery.centre@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or alternatively you can ring 01299 266929.

Thank you!
A great big thank you to every one who supports the Traidcraft stall and other events in St Anne’s Church.
Sales in 2011 were up by nearly £1,000 on the previous year, to just over £28,000, which is excellent, especially in the current difficult economic climate.
Please continue your support in 2012 and if you’ve not ventured inside St Anne’s before do please go in. The church is currently open from 10am to 2pm every day except Monday and you’ll receive a warm welcome. Our Fairtrade purchases make a significant difference to the lives of our producer partners in some of the poorest countries of the world and buying some of our grocery items, or gifts or cards is a simple way to help those less fortunate than we are.

It sometimes happens that all of a sudden, there’s something that always crops up in those stray conversations with people you bump into in the street.
I think last month it was two connected things. I found myself turning down my collar and saying, “Isn’t it warm? Bit different from this time last year, isn’t it?” The other person would then answer, “The frozen river - it doesn’t seem a whole year ago, does It? “.
Then we would launch into trying to outdo each other with the strangeness of our gardens. “The snowdrops have been out for ages”; “My daffs are coming up already”. “I still have flowers on my roses”, “The quince bush has several pink flowers on it”. I half expected someone to tell me they’d picked the first of their victoria plums yesterday. As I’m writing this on my birthday (14th January, if you want to make a note for next year) it’s still quite mild.
I have a horrid suspicion that by the time this magazine comes out, you’ll be laughing like drains, and saying, “Spoke a bit too soon, didn’t she?”. Still, you never know. I’ll just go and check my plum tree.

Where have all the heroes gone….?
BEWDL EY LIBRARY
Who is your literary hero/heroine? Do you prefer the exciting yet dangerous energy of Heathcliff and Cathy, or are the restrained Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett more your cup of tea? Especially for Valentine’s Day, this month we are dedicating a display to the literary characters that set our pulses racing. We’ll set it off, then you can come in and put your own choices out for everyone to enjoy. It’ll be anonymous and you don’t have to justify your choice - if you put ‘Pride and Prejudice’ on there, everyone will assume you fancy Mr Darcy and not have a clue it’s Mr Collins who does it for you! It’s not restricted to the classics so you can indulge your more up-to-date preferences as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s choices! Kay Sanderson

True Romance!
Deciding at last to clear out our loft, I came across a cutting from the Kidderminster Shuttle dated around 1993 about my husband. He’s quoted in the paper: “Traffic warden John Chater has bought a Valentine’s Card for the first time in almost 25 years of married life. He said “I decided to buy one. I really don`t know why.” As an extra special present he is taking a week off work to decorate the lounge.” Now that he is retired he doesn’t need to take a week off work to decorate; but I hope that when he reads this article he’ll get the hint after all it is Valentine’s day again on 14th February. Noah’s Flood
On Friday 3 February, St Anne’s Church is the venue for two performances of Benjamin Britten’s musical play, Noah’s Flood. They will be performing with professional musicians and singers from the town, Alan Fairs and Claire Worboys. Geoffrey Weaver is the musical director. A opportunity to see a renowned artist present
Demonstration of landscapes in colour by Geoff Kersey
Geoff is a professional Landscape Artist who paints, presents a series on Sky Television, teaches painting and writes books and articles. If you have any interest in art, then this is an opportunity not to be missed.
Geoff lives and works in Darley Dale - between Matlock and Bakewell in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales – where he has a Studio/Gallery.
Living and working in the Peak District, it’s no surprise that many of Geoff’s atmospheric paintings feature the diverse and beautiful landscape of the region, with its meandering rivers, steep dales and valleys, farms and villages.
Geoff, who turned professional in 1998, has also been spending time in Suffolk and Norfolk collecting subject material at many of his favourite places along the Heritage Coast, where the vast skies, fens, marshes and coastal clutter, provide an ideal contrast to his home region.
Finding himself much in demand as an artist, teacher and demonstrator, Geoff runs watercolour painting breaks and one day workshops in Derbyshire. He has written articles for The Artist and Illustrator, and Paint Magazines. His first book was published in summer 2004 and details are available on this website (www.geoffkersey.co.uk).
As well as his website providing copies of his impressive range of books, DVD’s and materials, you can see his new limited edition prints you can buy online. All the prints are produced using Canon, lightfast, pigmented inks, on 330gsm, Somerset, digitally coated watercolour paper. They are individually signed, titled and numbered by Geoff, and delivered rolled into a cardboard tube, ready to be framed and mounted. There are also nearly 50 books and DVDs listed on the Amazon website.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD JANUARY 2012
Town Council Budget
The Town Council agreed its budget for the next financial year and in so doing set the level of Council Tax that will be levied upon householders for its services. At present the Town Council’s part of the charge for an average Band D household is £21.52 ie a small proportion of the overall Council Tax bill payable. The Council felt that given the difficult times economically for everyone it would not increase the charge for what will be the third year running but this could not be guaranteed for future years. Mercure Kidderminster Hotel
The ownership and branding of what was the Ramada Hotel in Habberley Road has recently changed so it is now known as the Mercure Kidderminster Hotel. Councillors felt that by making reference to its location as being Kidderminster was incorrect since geographically the hotel lies within the Bewdley boundary and is outside Kidderminster. It was agreed the Mayor and Town Clerk would make representations to the local and head office management to register the Council’s disapproval of the change. Bewdley Library
Some discussion took place upon a suggestion coming from the County Council that it would be consulting on the possible move of the Library from its existing premises to being part of the Guildhall/Museum complex. There was some concern as to how practically that arrangement might work and how that could be achieved without interfering with what was offered by the Museum whose visitor numbers continued on an upward trend. Councillors felt further details were required on which full consultation with the public was then needed. Polling Stations
The District Council were carrying out a further review of polling stations throughout the District including the three within Bewdley/Wribbenhall. The Elim Church in Dog Lane was proposed as being officially designated in place of the nearby St George’s Hall. Councillors approved in principle subject to a safety rail being put in place between the steps and ramp inside the building. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 6th February, 5th March, 2nd April and 8th May (Tuesday). The Annual Town Meeting (open to all residents on the electoral roll) will take place on Monday 23rd April at 7.00pm. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Litter Pick
Well, how about that?
A few of us at Bewdley Baptist Church had been thinking about doing another litter pick in the town, as it was good fun and very worthwhile and we last did it years ago. I was wondering which area was most in need. Then I read Nora Chatsworth’s letter in January’s Bridge and got an answer: the river path between the Bewdley School and Styles Mill. We’ll be getting in touch with the District Council to borrow high vis vests, gloves and letter pickers and to arrange collection of the bags. I haven’t got a date yet, but when you read this it’ll be sorted. If you want to join in ‘phone the Church office on 01299 403267.

A New Year for Bewdley
As we’re now one month into what is hoped to be a great year for Great Britain, I got thinking about what 2012 holds for Bewdley. Well, for a start, we have the pleasure of welcoming the 2012 Olympic flame into our town, something that not all of the Wyre Forest can say!
Other than the big events, we have of course got the little happenings that make Bewdley what it is! Festivals, Duck races and Regattas...
I think sometimes we forget just how unique and special our town really is. As I’ve been walking around the Georgian streets these past couple of weeks, everybody seems happy and positive. As an entire town’s new years’ resolution, how about “We’ll try to strive to keep Bewdley the happy, safe, quiet place we know it to be”. Let’s make this a Happy Bewdley New Year.

BEWDLEY ANNUAL DUCK RACE
Over one thousand race-goers thronged the bridge and lined the river banks to watch the town’s inaugural event of 2012. The Bewdley Annual Duck Race was held on New Year’s Day. The notional one furlong course was officially described by the Clerk of the Course as ‘very wet underfoot’. Once again, the advice of Severn Tipster to focus on ducks with lower numbers – as they had less paint to carry – proved sound. From a flotilla of more than one thousand bright yellow floaters, duck 110 won by a beak from 183 who finished two shakes of a duck’s tail ahead of 7, a number which was clearly the odds-on favourite. The race, from Bewdley Bridge to Lax Lane, began at the crack of noon, or in many cases ten seconds before. Donald Drake, the Clerk of the Course, said “The decisive factor of the race was the number of ducks who jumped the gun for a quacking good start.” The Duck Race was efficiently organised by Lions International for the benefit of local charities. Anthony Collis
The Queen’s Jubilee We know that our present queen is only the second monarch to have achieved a diamond Jubilee. Here, from the Bridge’s predecessor, is an account of some of the celebrations in Bewdley for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.
Tuesday June 21st was welcomed ..... by a joyful peal of bells from the tower of St Anne’s church..... The first feature of the morning was THE CHILDREN’S PROCESSION, which started from Lax Lane at 9.30........it needed heroic devotion to get 860 medals sewn onto 860 rosettes..................facing the Town Hall, the Friendly Societies, the Rifle Corps, the Children....the Band took up position........ and the whole assembled multitude of probably nearly 2,000 united in singing with heart and voice the special Jubilee version of GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
..................SPECIAL THANKSGIVING SERVICE for the 2 parishes at St Anne’s church............ The Seatholders and Ladies had been admitted previously by ticket......... altogether close upon 1200 persons present, amongst whom we were most heartily glad to see, representatives of nearly every religious body.....DINNER IN THE PARK WALK at 2 pm....over 600 tickets, every householder and his wife in the Borough of Bewdley and Lordship of Ribbesford......we were glad to hear a large number had availed themselves of......the various drinks supplied in place of beer.....thankfully place on record our belief that.......Jubilee was celebrated without any increase in drunkenness whatever
.......TEA IN THE VICARAGE GARDEN........ILLUMINATED PROCESSION OF BOATS........glowing fireball driven through the streets with cautious but reluctant ardour. Thanks to Robert Limbrick for providing the parish magazine from which this is taken.
